Sania marches into Forest Hills finals
August 27, 2005 10:40 IST

India's Sania Mirza crushed the challenge of Alexa Glatch of the United
States in the semi-final of the Forest Hills Women's Tennis Classic in New
York to advance into her second WTA final on Friday.

The 18-year-old, seeded third, beat Glatch 6-4, 6-4 to enter the final of
Tier IV event without dropping a set.

Sania, the highest remaining seed, will meet Lucie Safarova of theCzech
Republic in the final on Saturday.

Safarova beat compatriot Iveta Benesova 2-6, 6-1, 6-4.

Sania won her first title at the Hyderabad Open earlier this year, when
she beat Ukraine's Alyona Bondarenko.

Jorge: Is it Prof. Lourdino Rodrigues or Prof. Lucio
Rodrigues?

Eugene: Prof Lourdino Rodrigues from Santa Cruz. To
the best of my knowledge Prof. Lucio didn't write in
Konkani.

The Dalgado Konkani Academy had published a small
booklet on Roman orthography many years ago. It's
obvious now that this one is no longer relevant.

I don't know how many netters have seen or have a copy
of Konkani Ord Xastra (maybe my spelling is incorrect)
written by Prof. Antonio Fernandes (not sure if I got
the name correctly). He was called "professor"
because, I believe, he taught at the Rachol Seminary.

I had mentioned this to Tomazinho Cardozo during one
few meetings at the NRI Meet at the Kala Academy. He
wanted a copy of it. Unfortunately, the copy is at a
different location than I am currently at.

I think I also talked about the professore's small
booklet with Fr. Mathew Almeida, when he came to
Toronto, more in passing than its merits and demerits
in the context of present-day Konkani.

Since the structure of Roman script Konkani has
undergone changes over the last decade or so, Konkani
Ord Xastra would not meet the present qualifications.
It could be dismissed as "old Konkani".

The late Prof. George Mark Moraes paid a glowing
tribute to Prof. Fernandes in an article in The
Examiner under the heading, Konkani Man of Letters.

I think I mentioned about Prof. Fernandes before on
this forum. I had requested his daughter to get his
works published, but she said that her brother was in
possession of his papers.

It's hard sometimes to convince people that publishing
a learned man's material for the common good of the
community is better than hanging on to such works for
whatever personal reasons.

In the context of the new form of Roman script
Konkani, I would have loved to hear the views of Prof.
Olivinho Gomes. Has any journalist approached him for
his views? If not, could some of the journos on this
forum get Prof. Gomes to talk. It would be nice to
have an all-round debate on the subject that's hot
issue now.

[Goanet] RE: NIIT not to be confused with the elite IIT

2005-08-27 Thread Umesh Kamath
Dear Carmo,

You can help me by signing my below petition & passing on this to more konkani people you know & people who love konkani, As we do not have any strong political leader from our Konkani community who will help konkani people i am finding it difficult to fight against NIIT

http://www.PetitionOnline.com/ukamath1/petition.html

FYI my complaint was first published in goasu-raj.org a political party from goa which i presume is for konkani people.

In order to develop Goa we have to first seperate it from India . There are lots of talented people in our konkani community (hindu, christian, Muslim) but we don't have a strong religious political leader who will work for development of Konkani & konkani people.

As such konkani people are slowly adopting other language as their mother tongue.

You want to encourage goans (konkani speaking people) but if konkani language is not there how konkani people will develop.

My dream is to become bal thackray (hitler) of Goa & to close NIIT like Wintech.

Or were you just suckered looking for a path of least resistance, by an institute whose name rhymed with IIT ?I am a graduate of IIT Kharagpur and I would like to encourage Goans and Konkani-speaking people (whether they use the Devnagiri, Roman, or Kannada script) to get into IIT (Indian Institute of Technology , that is) for undergraduate, graduate or postgraduate education. Please note that NIIT is not an elite institution such as the world-famous IITs (Indian
Institute of Technology). There is considerable preparation required for the highly competitive IIT-JEE (Joint Entrance Exam) - so it is not a path of least resistance such as that offered by other institutes, some of which you may be familiar with. Admission for the graduate and postgraduate programs is also a rigorous process.Perhaps in Goa we need an Institution like the Bansal Classes of Kota Rajasthan - I believe this year, nearly 33% of the students who were selected for IIT through the JEE were from Bansal's classes !We need more Goans to graduate from IITs for the greater good of our beloved Goa !!While I applaud your struggle against illicit trade practices in India, on a personal note, you may be "peeing in the wind" ..and you know what that can do to you (its very messy)!! Narratives of sickness

Sarai- CSDS students stipendship research on city 2004-2005

“Nahi hume malaria ke bare me kuch nahi pata” (No. we don’t know anything
about Malaria) this was the response from the group of labourers whom I
interviewed . Basically they were not interested to share any information
as they had impression that I am a health official and come to check the
site and their health card . Well this was the common reaction of the
labourers. They wanted to hide the truth even in their conversation. After
knowing the fact that it was for my study purpose they were relaxed in their
sharing. But I could still notice in some of the cases there were tense
moments of decision as to whether to reveal or conceal the truth.

I had selected 5 different construction sites in Panaji namely Taligao,
St.Inez, Patto (Bus stand), Bambolim and Porvorim – the periphery of
Panaji. Subsequently Different wards of Panaji were selected which often
has high Malaria cases like Taligao, St.Inez, Dona Paula and Caranzalem.

It was evening time ( 28 may 2005) when I visited this construction site
near Panaji bus stand, hoping the absence of contractor/ supervisor, so that
migrant labourers would speak freely about their suffering and problem. My
perception was wrong as I arrived the construction site one of the workers
informed the supervisor and all the narratives were manipulated. Well, it
was good example to understand how higher authority interferes in the common
man’s opinion.

They did not reveal most of the information, which I wanted to know about
facilities provided by the contractor, Health official their role to control
malaria etc , but unfortunately they replied very casually “ Sab Acha hai”,
well I could observe the situation how they were forced to say this words “
every thing is fine” . Although there were no proper place for them to
stay. No sanitation facility, no water facility etc , but then also “every
thing is fine!”

I was not satisfied with their narratives as I found it incomplete and
manipulated so I made another visit intending to speak to more workers.
Luckily I spoke to one labour who was sensible in narratives. Like others
who denied to reveal the information but after knowing the fact he started
sharing interesting thoughts.

Saidh chillur 38 years’ old men from the village Sondur ,Karnataka is
working in Goa for last 4 Years . “ Many time people who came for survey or
other visit related to malaria says that we get germs from our village but,
we very often heard this term ‘Malaria’ in Goa and in our village”. He
further mentions that the whole group who have come from same village had
taken same malaria preventive medicine in “sarkari davakhana”. Generally
who suffers from any illness prefers to go back to the village. “ Bimari me
Mestri hame goan bejta hai” (The supervisor sends them back to their village
during the sickness time). “ Who will take the responsibility of these
workers, so best way to get rid of this problem is to pay them and send back
to their village” this was the statement made by the contractor Mr. Naik.

“The village people then blame us for getting malaria germs from Goa and
same is the situation in ‘Sarkari davakhana’ when we take the treatment.
Our situation is like “ “Dhobi ka kuta no ghar ka na ghat ka”, Here also we
blamed to spread malaria and in village also they blame us for getting
Malaria”
He rightly observed that In Goa they are easily available scapegoats for the
higher authorities when it comes for spreading malaria only single reason
is they migrate from malaria endemic area.

Another site that I visited in Porvorim consisted labourers form Nanded from
Maharastra Well they had feeling that their Maharastra is great, so at the
first instinct they said“ Amcha kade Malaria prakar Govya itka
nahi” ( In Maharastra malaria is not that common as in Goa.) He further
agreed that people suffer from other diseases but not malaria. They were all
aware of all symptoms, causes and precautions. Even they were aware of
facility provided by Health authorities and the importance of Health cards.

They were praising efforts taken by the health authorities to visit the site
and take the blood sample for malaria testing and also on the health cards.
In this group there “Mestri”( labour

Hello Goanetters

I do second Mr Gadgil’s opinion. So is it back to school for all those who
will have to pick up on this new script? Do we need to learn new script for
learning our Konkani? What is wrong with the present roman script? Countless
writers wrote books and many Konkani lovers read them, namely, Late
Reginaldo Fernandes, Jose Inacio, and our very own James Hadley Boniventure
D’Pietro and many others.

Subject: [Goanet] Re: Roman script Konkani... in new form
To: Goanet mails

This new Roman script Konkani is bizarre. It really appears like
shooting oneself in the foot. Mere phonetics should not drive one to
such absurdities; after all, we read and write English accurately enough
in Roman script, even though it is far from phonetic. (George Bernard
Shaw once suggested that 'fish' be spelt as 'ghoti', with the 'gh'
pronounced as in 'rough', the 'o' pronounced as in 'women' and the 'ti'
pronounced as in motion!)

If one is serious about popularising Roman script Konkani, such stuff
should be avoided. Experience with diacritics and unconventional marks
is that these things only cause confusion in the minds of the average
reader; as such, they are best reserved for academic journals, etc. Look
at the way Hindi is written in Roman script (in newspapers, magazines,
etc. there are always a few Hindi words nowadays). Nobody who knows
Hindi (and can read Roman script) has the slightest difficulty in
understanding them.

What is wrong with Roman Konkani as it is currently written? I am not a
native Konkani speaker, but with some practice have never had any
particular difficulty in reading Roman Konkani (though understanding it
is more difficult, but then I have that problem with Devanagari Konkani
as well).

When getting Roman Konkani accepted is such a big struggle in itself,
this really seems to be creating an additional unnecessary handicap,
like tying heavy weights round one's legs before starting to scale a
mountain.

[Goanet] Roman script for whom?

2005-08-27 Thread Teotonio R. de Souza
The RSM debate raises some doubts in my mind:

(1) Roman script is meant for oldies who cannot read devanagari? For Goans
in diaspora? For foreign tourists? Every young Goan in Goa learns
devanagari script in school nowadays. Others outside Goa can learn it with
some effort.

(2) I would agree and disagree with Vidyadhar Gadgil. Diacritical marks will
not make any sense to common people. With or without such marks, Konkani in
Roman script can be read correctly only by those who already know the
Konkani sounds. English in roman script is read correctly only by those who
have already learnt the language sufficiently well.

(3) I have not seen any of the new diacritical marks appearing correctly in
the plain-text required by the Goanet. It may have to change its rules to
support the new way of writing Konkani in roman script.

(4) For decades now the Portuguese and the Brazilians are struggling to come
to an ortographic accord! The non-Portuguese lusophones feel that such an
accord pressed by the Portuguese is a new form of cultural imperialism! The
Brazilians also consider their language as much more alive and in constant
change. For those who can read Portuguese the following link could help
understanding this problem better.

Subject: [Goanet] Re: Roman script Konkani... in new form

To: Goanet mails

Message-ID: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

Content-Type: text/plain

[Goanet] Re: kingfisher airlines ad

2005-08-27 Thread Eugene Correia
I could not find the ad for the kingfisher airlines on
the company website, and would be happy if someone
sends me a link or posts it on the forum.

Scantily-clad girls promoting tourist destinations is
not new. It seems the old controversy of the billboard
that was outside the Dabolim airport has been
reignited. I think it was the billboar welcoming
visitors to Goa to a place where "anything goes",
maybe I am not using the exact words.

In the current controversy, the NGOs and individuals
may be fighting the "sublimal" message in the
Kingfisher Airlines ad.
Whether we like it or not, Goa has attained fame (or
to those who look at the other side, infamy) as a fun
place. Maybe this is the hangover from the hippie
days.
I doubt, however, Goa is looked at as a "sin city" in
the manner such as Bangkok. The paedophile image
created with the arrest of Freddy Peats and the
reopening of the issue with Peats's associate in the
child-sex ring now brought to Goa will put the
spotlight back on Goa.
Kerala offers almost equivalent or better scenic
delights as Goa, but its tourist image is much
"cleaner" than Goa's. Once an image is created, it
persists.
As far as I can see, Goa's image isn't soiled. Such
ads only create some frills, but visitors would be
losers if they come for "sex tourism." In this
not-so-subtle ads, Goa can come to be projected as a
better nightspot than the rest of India, though
frankly the nightlife in some metropolitcan cities,
particularly Mumbai, is much more tempting to those
who seek such pleasures.
In new tourist places such as Dubai, which is promoted
as very liberal compared to other cities in the Middle
East, there is what one would call "underground
tourism." The word "sex" is taboo.
I can believe that call-girl rackets are existing in
Goa but open soliciting as done on Dubai streets may
not be taking place. That Goa had or still has a "red
light" district is enough to convince the global
traveller that the state is "hot".
I read an article on Goa's tourism in the current
issue of Goa Today, but I don't remember reading
anything on sex being one of the magnets, rest being
sun, sea and feni, attracting tourists, foreign and
domestic, to Goa.
I would hold rest of my comments till I see the
Kingfisher Airlines ad. If someone could post me
privately the ad, I would be thankful.

[Goanet] RE: NIIT not to be confused with the elite IIT

2005-08-27 Thread CARMO DCRUZ

Umesh,

We dont need Bal Thackerays in Goa. If you are such a fan of Bal Thackeray,
may be you should stay in Bambay and succeed him in Maharashtra. Maybe you
should lead a movement to promote Marathi in the Roman script - This
movement could be a economic and social boon to Maharashtra - it will
facilitate ease of acceptance and adoption of the Marathi language by
foreign businessmen, investors, tourists and also the worldwide future
generations of the Marathi diaspora. The Roman script is universal - and esp
significant in these days of proliferation of communication via the
internet.
There are a number of Goans in Mumbai and Pune who are already proficient in
the use of the Roman script in Konkani, you could employ all of them as
translators - along with other proficient Marathi-English speakers. The
Bishop of Pune recently endorsed the use of the Roman script fo Konkani -
Now you have to convince the Hindu priests, the Imams and the parish priest
that adopting Marathi in the Roman script along with the Devnagiri script
will greatly increase their following and enhance the weekly collections.

I don't think you should try to solicit Konkani-speaking sympathizers in
your squabble with NIIT - you have to reach out to speakers of all languages
in the Mumbai area.

Once the well-being of the average Maharashtrian is greatly enhanced by such
a movement to promote and popularize Marathi in the Konkani script, then who
knows you may become the Chief Minister of Maharashtra - which Bal Thackeray
never was .!

If we do not have a strong leader - then why dont you step up, show your
testicular virility and take over such a movement ? As I told you earlier,
you may be peeng in the wind in the fight against NIIT - which is Not IIT !!

Best Regards,

Carmo

Dear Carmo,

You can help me by signing my below petition & passing on this to more
konkani people you know & people who love konkani, As we do not have any
strong political leader from our Konkani community who will help konkani
people i am finding it difficult to fight against NIIT

http://www.PetitionOnline.com/ukamath1/petition.html

FYI my complaint was first published in goasu-raj.org a political party
from goa which i presume is for konkani people.

In order to develop Goa we have to first seperate it from India . There are
lots of talented people in our konkani community (hindu, christian, Muslim)
but we don't have a strong religious political leader who will work for
development of Konkani & konkani people.

As such konkani people are slowly adopting other language as their mother
tongue.

You want to encourage goans (konkani speaking people) but if konkani
language is not there how konkani people will develop.

My dream is to become bal thackray (hitler) of Goa & to close NIIT like
Wintech.

Goenkar" was not good enough to mean any Goans?

And will Fr. Pratap Naik please let us know how such "Gu" derivations are

IFFI BLUES . . . AND REDS

Pratap Singh Rane does not get tired of squeaking that very
soon a major police probe will be launched against Manohar Parrikar and
other BJP bigwigs, in respect of alleged financial bungling during the
International Film Festival of India organized in Goa in November, 2004.
Manohar Parrikar, despite the unprecedented problems in Panjim this
monsoon, still does not get tired of boasting that he had all the good
intentions in the world when he went forward with his grandiose plans to
host the IFFI.

Rane seems to be spending all his time as Goa's Chief Minister
in plotting how to get the maximum funds for the IFFI which he intends to
organize in November, 2005. His whole posturing seems to be to subtly tick
off Parrikar about the shoddy job he did in the name of Panjim's
development, even while discarding all the charge-sheets submitted to him
against the Parrikar regime by various citizens' groups.

The real trouble with both these worthies is in their line of
thinking. Reams have been spent by various commentators in splitting hairs
about the faulty implementation and wasteful expenditures on various plans
of the BJP Govt. and now of the Cong. Govt. But it is their mindsets which
need probing. Both of them share a definite philosophy that the government
must only induce the market forces to do good, and tons of 'good' will crash
through the leaky roofs of the poor people. No need to do anything specific
about the leaky roofs themselves!

If anything was really wrong with Parrikar's IFFI plans, it
was the fact that he envisaged the expenditure on IFFI as the engine of
Goa's overall economic growth. Frankly speaking, in economics, corruption
has no place as a category of analysis, for the simple reason that even if
money meant for a particular purpose is entirely looted, the money would
still be in the hands of the corrupt person and can justifiably be expected
to be spent by him for his needs, thereby, in turn, turning the wheels of
the economy and leading to growth. But this is precisely where the rub lies.

Ever since 1991, when the Govt. of India started implementing
"reforms", the money garnered by a few rich people (whether by toiling or by
looting) is allowed to be freely spent on imported luxury goods or goods
produced in India by foreign companies. The net result, in either case, is
that the money ends up turning the wheels of the American or Japanese or
some other foreign economy.

A close look at the patterns of Parrikar's IFFI expenditures
reveals that a major part of the money ended up in Canada or, at any rate,
outside Goa. Even assuming that there was no corruption (as Parrikar is fond
of challenging all and sundry), the fact of the matter is that there can be
no net gain for the Goan economy or the Goan population, if the money lands
up outside the state. The myth propagated by Parrikar about
"infrastructure-creation" easily stands exposed by the concepts of
"wear-and-tear" and "depreciation".

On the other hand, even if there was massive corruption, but
all the money was intact within Goa, then obviously it would be spent within
Goa and, in turn, one could conceivably argue that the local economy has
benefited. This would, of course, require that all the goods, on which the
looted money is spent, are produced in Goa by local capitalists by using
local materials. The more the digression from the norm, the more will be the
leakage from Goa and correspondingly the less will be the benefit to the
local economy.

Rane's proposed IFFI-2005 may well boast of a Rs. 100-crore
budget. The moot point is: how much of that money will be retained within
Goa for ultimate expenditures on goods produced locally? It is this question
that Rane must be made to answer, before being allowed to even open his
mouth about Goa becoming the permanent venue of IFFI. It is the injection of
money into the local economy and its retention within the same, which is the
true measure of the worth of IFFI for Goans. Otherwise, IFFI will simply
become the Permanent Weapon of the Drain of Indian Wealth through Goa.

Till the next Monday, then, Happy Thinking!

[Goanet] RE: Konkani Roman script - Mogal Godfrey ani Muzo Mogal Mashbhau Prof Carmo

2005-08-27 Thread jose colaco
From: Umesh Kamath <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

Dear Carmo,

You can help me... i am finding it difficult to fight against NIIT

FYI my complaint was first published in goasu-raj.org a political party from
goa which i presume is for konkani people.

In order to develop Goa we have to first seperate it from India.

As such konkani people are slowly adopting other language as their mother
tongue.

You want to encourage goans (konkani speaking people)

My dream is to become bal thackray (hitler) of Goa & to close NIIT like
Wintech.

==

>From my good mashbhau Prof Carmo D'Cruz in Florida:

Umesh,

We dont need Bal Thackerays in Goa. If you are such a fan of Bal Thackeray,
may be you should stay in Bambay and succeed him in Maharashtra.

There are a number of Goans in Mumbai and Pune who are already proficient in
the use of the Roman script in Konkani

I don't think you should try to solicit Konkani-speaking sympathizers in
your squabble with NIIT

We have an enlightened Archbishop in Felipe Neri Ferrao - he will do the
right thing for Goa and Goans.

=

Mogal Godfrey ani Muzo Mogal Mashbhau Prof Carmo,

1. First of all, my para bens to Carmo for dealing swiftly with whoever this
Umesh Bal Thackarey is. I fully agree - Bal Thackareys and their clones
should STAY in Maharashtra. Goans would like to remain peaceful. Those
inclined to violence please stay right where you are ...Thank You.

2. The term "Konkani Speaking people i.e. Goans" is misleading. I know
Maharashtrians, Mangaloreans & other Kannadigas who speak Konkani. Not all
of them are Goans. They may or may not NOT have the same interests in
Konkani or Romi script Konkani that Goans have.

3. Similarly, those who make MONEY out of teaching Devanagri Konkani and
anti-Konkani forces may be tempted to call "Romi Konkani is for Oldies".
Ignore them. Our mothers and hence our mother tongues should NOT be placed
in the hands of Mercenaries and Hypocrites.

4. I agree with Vidyaghar Gadgil. Please do not invent GRECO-ROMAN scripted
konkani. Romi Konkani is fine. As Carmo has correctly said "There are a
number of Goans in Mumbai and Pune who are already proficient in the use of
the Roman script in Konkani" - in Goa and elsewhere too!

5. If we want to fine tune the sounds and intonations, please contact Jorge
de Abreu Noronha. He has written about this matter - years ago!

6. As far as the New Archbishop and his support for Romi Konkani is
concerned, I prefer to be a "Thomas". I will believe it when I see it. Now
that Poona has taken the lead maybe !

7. It is important that even in these communications: WE try to avoid NUEVO
and IMPOSED words. If Konkani is to succeed as a Mother Tongue, please
reatain the words our mothers used! i.e. School = iskoll not shalla, Exam =
ezam not pariksha, part 1 = poilli parte not bhag 1!

If we do not agree .let's continue with Marathi and this horrible
sounding nasal dialect that is being paraded as Konkani !

8. Finally there is NO need to be HYPER or REACTIVE about this matter.
Goans will have to agree on WHAT is in their best ECONOMIC interests - a
devanagri konkani, romi konkani + devanagri konkani or what. After that
.Goans must Lobby one step at a time - never mind the detractors.

Godfreybab Thank You very much and Well done. Fr. pratap, Thank you too.
ArchBishop Neri Please allow me to say Thank You to you sometime soon!

sincerely

jc

[Goanet] Re: Goanet's 11th Anniversary

2005-08-27 Thread George Pinto
Congrats to everyone who makes the Goan cybervillage happen. Herman lit a
small switch in a
cyber-room in 1994, perhaps not realizing then what he tripped on. Since then
many, MANY, have
decorated the room with other (bigger?) switches and lights and kept the energy
and electricity
flowing (and ebbing). Credit to everyone and the volunteers who keep it going.
Others have left to
start other important Goan cyber-rooms. Good wishes to them too. One day we
will have a nice Goan
home and then ... a nice village.

May Goa and Goans prosper.

Regards,
George
