[Goanet] KGB alleged to have given money to Congress party
With reference to the article posted from BBC posted by Bernardo Colaco. In addition to the Congress party and some of its leaders, the book also alleges that money was paid to the Communist Party of India and some ten journalists. While the allegation against the political parties has received good coverage, no follow-up has been done about the journalists. In fact, after the first reports, commentators have not mentioned about the role of the media. Sachin Phadte
Re: [Goanet] Route of 'Monorail' Goa
Lawrence, here is my answer; I too was enamoured with this KRC's Sky Bus project, when it was first announced. But I did not know then, that the Goa Govt. actually subsidised the KRC with Goa's meagre resources. Then again the Sky Bus has been a shambles thanks to the poor designing, planning, manufacturing and safety incalculation into such a prestigious project! There was no need for the KRC to go international and talk so big about this project, that even today is incomplete and has failed even at the trial stage, with a Bang! This amounts to Cheating on a grand scale! The KRC has only proved that their technological knowledge and expertise is not as good as they profess it to be! The Goan engineer Remedious had, I believe strongly objected to the alignment of the KRC tracks too close to the hills along the route, and was one of the reasons why he resigned from KRC. Is this not true, Now why did not Mr Rajaram and his other buddies resign when the Track failed twice in two monsoons killing so many people, and bringing shame to the KRC and Indian standards??? Tell me why huge compensation should not be paid to the victims and families of the twin tragedies, from the pockets of Mr Rajaram and his buddies. And why did they not resign! more so after bluffing all of India that it was a 'Technological Marvel. Marvel, without basic safety in design? What bloody crap is all this! Same thing has been repeated with the Sky Bus trial project. The KRC should return all the monies goven to them, and with high interest back to the GOG. The monstrosity that the trial Sky Bus that has been built at the Margao RLY Staion, should be pulled down immediately, part by part by Mr Rajaram and his buddies, starting today! Do you know how much interference this amount of steel in the air is causing to Radio and TV transmission waves? The Monorail has been proven in theory and in practice for many years and in several countries; and has a strong safety record and is the most aesthetical of all elevated rail projects! The Proof is in the Pudding! The Sky Bus has failed in Design and safety; a very big failure. The world must be laughing! Lawrence, the 21st century technology that you are talking of is steeped into ancient culture, not really modern; and has therefore failed; for not looking forward but backwards! Amen! [Goanet] Reliving the Portuguese terror
The Rediff Special/Richard Zimler Reliving the Portuguese terror in Goa September 19, 2005 http://us.rediff.com/news/2005/sep/19spec2.htm?q=tpfile=.htm In an interview with rediff India Abroad novelist Richard Zimler pointed out that the 'Goa Inquisition was merciless, cruel' Published in Britain by Constable Robinson and in America and Canada by Dell in July 2005, this is an excerpt from Zimler's novel, Guardian of the Dawn, set during the Inquisition in Goa. At this point in the novel, the narrator -- a young boy named Tiago -- is living with his Portuguese-Jewish father and younger sister, Sofia, just outside Goan territory. Tiago's Indian mother has recently died and it is the beloved family cook, Nupi, who helps him overcome his grief. After the wet nurse left, our house suddenly became too large and cold for me. All its comforting corners seemed to harden, and its doors seemed to be forever waiting for a visitor who would never come. For weeks at a time I trudged around from room to room thinking I was now an intruder. I even hated my bed, and the down pillows that had made a rocky coastline when I played at naval battles on my sheets, and the shady alcove on the north side of Papa's library where I read my books when everywhere else was too hot. I got it into my head that I wanted a staircase and a second floor added to the house. I no longer remember why. Maybe I needed a new place to start over. One afternoon, after Papa refused to build a staircase for me once again, Nupi led me crying into her kitchen. When I explained what was wrong, she ordered me to sit. What for? I asked. Will you ever just do what I say without making a fuss? She'd made a batch of steaming dal for herself and spooned some with her old iron ladle onto a banana leaf for me, then gave herself a smaller portion. She moved her ancient wooden stool up to the table we'd recently given a new coat of bright yellow paint and instructed me to do the same with the cane chair behind her broom. You want me to eat with you? I asked. She looked around, then peered over my shoulder. She even upturned her large cauldron, which had a wedge of black soap hiding underneath. I don't see anyone else here, she said, so you're my only choice. For the first time in our lives we ate together. A white hibiscus flower from our garden peeked over the rim of the cracked earthenware jar between us. Flowers are good, she announced to me when I touched it. I came to learn that this was an essential postulate in her guidebook to life. And your mother would want to know you're eating well, she added. As we ate our dal, Nupi kicked my bare foot now and again to make me look up, since I tended to get lost in thought of late. She told me I mustn't leave over a single lentil or she'd report me to my father, which was an attempt at humour, since she was always saying Papa was too easy on me. When I didn't smile, she gave me a serious look and said I was to eat with her in the kitchen whenever I was feeling bad. You mean it? I asked. I never joke about food, she replied, which was true enough. I sometimes think that Nupi's simple offer that day saved my life, because I did eat with her -- and often -- over the coming years. And I have always associated the taste of her dal on that first occasion with the kind of love that never fails to act in time of need. Sofia told me much later that she did, too, and I would guess that Nupi invited my sister to eat with her on occasions I don't even know about. I wish I had done something in return for our old cook that day -- had collected a basket of the violet-coloured orchids we called cat's whiskers for her shrine to Ganesha or simply hugged her. I didn't yet realize that all she really prayed for -- and what she most wanted in life -- was that my sister and I would not die young. But that, of course, was a guarantee -- and gift -- that no one could give her. Published with the author's kind permission. -- Using Opera's revolutionary e-mail client: http://www.opera.com/mail/

[Goanet] Mono Rail
Mono Rail also known as narrow gauge is a train that normally passes through the city area. It has 5 to 6 wagons and is noise and pollution free. Its services are as good as the buses but the travelling time much shorter. To shorten distances you normally build a viaduct and the travelling public has much to gain. There will be stations for commutors to enter and leave the train at convinient locations. I hope the Government has a positive response from International and experienced companies and goes ahead with the project fast and efficiently. Tom de Sousa in Hong Kong
[Goanet] Salgaocar Sports Club: Squad for the season
Salgaocar Sports Club: Squad for the season -by ARMSTRONG VAZ Youth are the hope of tomorrow...a more brighter and eventful tomorrow, a tomorrow through which the youth will bail us through. A sixth place in the national football league was certainly not what Salgaocar Sports Club had aimed for last season. Their stocks had soared after winning the Goa Professional League, but later the pendulum in the National Football League swung from ecstasy to despair. Former India striker Shabbir Ali is back at the helm of affairs at Salgaocar. The coach who was able to get the NFL league title for Salgoacar in 1999 season and also the Federation Cup. Shabbir was called in to guide the Salgoacar boat during the last three matches of the National Football League. He got the SOS after coach Savio Madeira had to attend one of his four modules of coaching course conducted by Asian Football Confederation (AFC). Currently, Savio is attending his second module in Germany along with Mahindra coach Derrick Pereira. The third module will be conducted by both coaches with their respective teams while the last module will be held in Malaysia, informed chief coach Shabbir Ali. Salgoacar have managed to retain players from last years' squad while adding nine new players to the squad .The new players for the season are midfielder Menino Fernandes, defender Agnelo Colaco, striker Aseem K, defender Kamal Thapa (all from Vasco), midfielder S. Rony (SBT), defenders Sachin Gawas, Biju Kumar (both Sporting), goalkeeper Arjit Sengupta (Peerless), goalkeeper Sangram Mukherjee, defender Selwyn Fernandes (both East Bengal). Salgoacar, as usual, started practice in the second week of July and have trained at Utorda beach in Salcete. The players were also put through gym training. Salgaocar have strengthened the goalkeeping department by recruiting international Sangram Mukherjee from East Bengal and Arjit Sengupta from Peerles Kolkotta. In the defense are Vasco Club's duo of Agnelo Colaco and Kamal Thapa. Shabbirs new options in the defense are Sporting recruits Biju Kumar and Sachin Gawas. Old war horse, former international Roberto Fernandes is still around to give his tons of experience for the defense. Roberto is in his sixteenth season of his football career with Professional League Clubs, eleven years of which have been spent in the Salgoacar camp. Menino Fernandes from Vasco and S Rony (SBT) will try to make the Salgoacar waistline stronger in the mid field . The new man in the strike force is diminutive striker Aseem K from Vasco SC. On the foreign recruits chief coach Shabbir informed that Brazilian Fabio dos Passos was the only foreigner who had confirmed his return for the season. It was not known whether the Brazilian will be in time for the Goa league. The fate of the other foreigners is not known informed manager Leopold Fernandes. Another Brazilian, Marcus Pereira who left Salgaocar in controversial circumstances and was then released on loan to Churchill Bros mid-way into the NFL has a two year contract with Salgaocar. The fate of Nigerian Bello Razaq was not available. The striking was a cause of concern and the numerous chances missed in the NFL has made the Salgoacar management to rethink on the strike force. On the immediate plans for the NFL and Federation cup, Leopold informed that the club plans to recruit two foreign strikers. Salgaocar Sports Club will be hoping luck and goal scoring machines get fine tuned for the season, fine tuned to bag them honors and bagful of trophies. Goalkeepers - Juje Siddi, Sangram Mukerjee, Abjit Sengupta. Defenders - Roberto Fernandes, Selwyn Fernandes, Prashant Jaggi, Bento Vaz, Agnelo Colaco, Kamal Thapa, Remus Gomes, Biju Kumar, Sachin Gawas, Micky Fernandes Mid fielders - Menino Fernandes, Bhuvan Joshi, Rocus Lamare, William Colaco, Jerose Oliveira, Zico Costa, Francis Andrade, S. [Goanet] ONLY DEVANAGIRI SCRIPT VOTARIES - EXPOSED
Priest's expose on hollowness of Devanagari script upsets casteists. Roman- Kannada script Konkanis' unity sends Devanagari advocates scarring By Bosco e Sousa Eremita PANAJI: The potential unification of Konkani lovers in Roman and Kannada scripts has triggered a wave of panic amongst the Devanagari lobby in Goa, fearing erosion of the latter's clout should Roman script be granted equal status on par with Devanagari. According to reports reaching here, Karnataka has refused to accept Devanagari script in Konkani and have demanded that Kannada script be utilized to teach Konkani at the school level. At a recent meeting held at Mangalore, a section of Kannada writers have decided to write to the Sahitya Akademi, New Delhi seeking a clarification whether it recognized Devanagari script as the official script of Konkani. If the answer is yes, we will approach the apex court challenging the Sahitya Academy's decision. If not, it would also mean that Roman script would have equal status, explained a Konkani activist who preferred anonymity. Ever since Konkani was granted official recognition by the Sahity a Academy, books written in Roman script were not considered by the Academy for awards, as a result most of the works by Goan writers were ignored, many passing away without recognition. The development in Karnataka, buttressed by persistent research by Father Pratap Naik of the Thomas Stephens Konknni Kendr at Porvorim, has exposed not only the hollowness of Devanagari but in the process has exposed the machination of the Saraswat role in continuing the cultural hegemony in Konkani. The most significant manner the nervousness is palpable is evident in the writings published in a local Konkani daily, which has been used in recent times to pillor the Catholic community by offering space to rank RSS supporters like Subash Velingkar, even Nagesh Karmali of Fontinhas vandalism fame.In one of the article penned by Karmali entitled Father Pratap's mental balance is going dated on 18 July, Karmali describes the Jesuit researcher as proud, arrogant and outsider N. Shivdas in an article on 22 July once again pillors the priest thus: Father Pratap Naik creates hatred. What sort of religious trend is this? Evidently, Father Pratap's role in negating the false propaganda orchestrated by the Devanagari lobby, followed by proving that Devanagari orthography (writing system) used in Goa is unscientific and hardly holds any future, has unsettled his detractors. With computers and internet, Roman script is more acceptable globally unlike Devanagari. Even Kannada script is localized to Karnataka, but Roman has international acceptance, he said. Currently, the government due to the Official Language Act has been supporting institutions of Konkani in Devanagari script, but has cold-shouldered those in Roman script. Most of these institutions are controlled by the high caste Hindu Brahmins, who have over the years imposed their say in how Konkani ought to be promoted. Consequently, though the Catholic community had relented to Devanagari, by way of accepting it in the Language Act in the hope that Konkani would be made the state language and unite the peoples of the state, Roman script writers have now come to realize that the divide between the various scripts has continued, with Devanagari script benefiting predominantly Hindu Brahmins, who being familiar with the script have usurped most government jobs. Even their women who would have otherwise remained dutiful house-wives have gained employment in Government services and also as Konkani language tutors, while the Cristaos have suffered with the unfamiliar non standardized language., says a young supporter of Roman script . At the peak of the Konkani agitation in Goa in the mid eighties -- the Hindu Brahmins in Goa who rallied behind the Konkani Porjecho Avaz manipulated the Cristaos of Goan origin to accept Devanagari as the script in lieu of Roman script (which they as well as the Church authorities were acquainted with) on the assumption that --- if the Devanagari script was accepted the Hindu Bahujans (non Brahmins) would easily accept Konkani instead of Marathi as they were familiar with the Devanagari script. Demolishing the claim of present orthography (writing system) in Devanagari script, Fr Pratap explained that it cannot show a number of sounds proper to Konkani, and its use is not as scientific as in Sanskrit orthography because of inconsistent spelling. Devanagari cannot be the natural script for Konkani because it was not evolved for Konkani., he added. Last month, the TSKK introduced changes in the orthography of writing Konkani in Roman script to suit modern technology and adapt to sounds near to spoken Konkani, in the process eliminating defects involved in writing in Devanagari script. Though Devanagari script is phonetic, the Devanagari orthography

Besides what recreational facilities are there for family vacations except having a dip in the oily water? Is he living in the 21st century or busy in utilising anybodies cast/cread. It is ones own right to keep any name to himself. I know many christians who still have retained their ancestor hindu sirnames. Instead of participating in such vulgur discussions how nice it would have been if Mr. Borges had given some points on how to promote Konkani for the future generations irrespective of the script or if he had given his shoulder to the people who work day and night for such cause. Can he let us know his contribution in this regard. Dev Borem Korum, Ancy S. [Goanet] Ecoterrorism on Goan Beaches
Headline: Ecoterrorism on Goan Beaches By Nandkumar Kamat Source: Navhind Times 21 September 2005 at http://www.navhindtimes.com/stories.php?part=newsStory_ID=092118 Summary: I have collected some sample tarballs from the Goa beaches for studies ... my conclusion is that this was not an usual oil spill or an accident. It is carefully planned ecoterrorist attack on Goan beaches to break the backbone of tourism industry this year ... This is an unprecedented attack to give a bad publicity to the famous beaches in Goa ... Only Goa's competitors stand to gain from tourist booking cancellations ... A few more ecoterrorist attacks, and then it is the end of Goan beach tourism. FULL TEXT: I have been back after visiting the beaches of Salcete between Utorda to Benaulim. My aim was to get a first-hand knowledge of the tarballs deposition on these beaches and collect some samples for studies. I have written earlier about marine pollution and its management (Glimpses, March 28, 2005). I had also pointed out in that article that - Oil pollution in the Arabian sea (called north Indian ocean) is well-documented by the oceanographers. Dr Sengupta and the former director of National Institute of Oceanography, Dr S Z Quasim have catalogued the health of the Indian Ocean (Chapter 8, The Indian Ocean, volume 1, Oxford and IBH, 2001). I had also warned that - The probability of a major oil spill near the coast of Goa is very high because of the heavy supertanker traffic close to the coast. So far, no major tanker disaster has been reported. About 35 per cent of global marine transport of oil from the Middle East takes place along the Arabian Sea tanker routes. It is wishful thinking to believe that there will not be any accident and any marine or coastal pollution when annually, oil cargo of one billion metric tonne is transported within just a few kilometres from the coastline of Goa. The entry of oil in the Arabian Sea from operational discharges has been about a million tonne annually. This results in an estimated formation of 3,700 tonne of tar balls, annually. Due to currents, these are deposited on the beaches during the monsoon. How frequently have oil slicks been sighted close to Goa? The Japan Oceanographic Centre has reported that during 1975-80, on 495 out of 611 occasions, oil slicks were sighted in a sample quadrat close to Goa. This is highest frequency of oil slicks in the Indian Ocean. It is higher than even the transects surrounding Sri Lanka which is close to the supertanker lanes. In the said article, I had also advised the government - To consult senior (now retired) chemical oceanographers like Dr Rabin Sengupta to prepare a 'Marine environmental threat perception and mitigation' report which could lead to the state's effective and rapid response to any future threat from the sea. The ink on that article has not yet dried, but now we have almost all the beaches in Goa covered with toxic and carcinogenic tarballs. After visiting south Goa beaches, my conclusion is that this was not an usual oil spill or an accident. It is carefully planned ecoterrorist attack on Goan beaches to break the backbone of tourism industry this year. I found a few foreign tourists turning away from Utorda and Sernabhatim beaches. I warned a couple not to touch a tarball out of curiosity. In chemical language tarballs are lightweight condensed 'napthenes'. Beside tarballs I could collect tarcakes and tarsheets which proved that there could have been a massive oil slick in the Arabian Sea few weeks ago. Tarballs do not come from instantaneously. The government should order an inquiry to verify whether these tarballs have originated from the oil spill reported in March 2005 from Merchant vessel, Maritime Wisdom. Spectroscopic analysis of oil samples from that vessel and the tar balls would show any positive relationship between the oil cargo of that vessel and the deposited tarballs. If the tarballs have not originated from that oil spill then the finger of suspicion should point to a calculated ecoterrorist attack against the economic targets in Goa and possibly the Konkan coast by an unknown vessel. The vessel could be of Indian or foreign origin. It could be a warship or a petroleum supertanker. The government of India has not been taking the issue of keeping a round-the-clock watch on the supertanker traffic seriously. The Indian coast guard has failed to detect the massive pollution front before it was deposited in Goa. This is an unprecedented attack to give a bad publicity to the famous beaches in Goa. Only Goa's competitors stand to gain from tourist booking cancellations. It is not difficult to engage forensic experts to identify the vessel. But the central government does not seem to care about this calamity despite the tourism industry from Goa contributing Rs 2,000 crore annually to its foreign exchange kitty. A few more ecoterrorist

[Goanet] PLANS FOR GOA'S AIRPORT
*** Your mail has been scanned by InterScan. ***-*** Hello Barry and Goanetters I have no idea if the new airport at Mopa will help Goa or Goans the way the plans are going but I am sure of one thing, the rate of accidents will certainly increase. Especially for the buses and cars traveling from Mopa to south Goa as the traffic flow will certainly increase and our roads are not capable of handling that flow. Cheers Jerry Fernandes PLANS FOR GOA'S AIRPORT: One of Goanet's readers Barry K Smith [EMAIL PROTECTED] comments on news report that Goa's planned Mopa airport will have a facility for simultaneous landing of nine flights proposed at the (planned) Mopa airport, saying: Nine flights landing simultaneously! Nowhere else but in Goa would you get such fanciful ideas. It's all airy fairy.
[Goanet] Who is communal?
hello Goanetters, I believe M. Parrikar has said that retaining dabolim and not going ahead with Mopa, is communal. How is this possible Mr Parrikar? Was the Communal VCD hatched and made in Mopa! Or what is it then. Please explain how you can term a healthy debate on airport location as communal. That probably is all that you are thinking of in your communal mind. No wonder, You seem to be so rattled! This is a classic case of the Kettle calling the Pot Black! Disgustingly, Nascy Caldeira Melbourne

[Goanet] Premier of documentary film on Abbe Faria
Excerpt from Documentary: On 20th September 1945, by public contribution, the statue of Jose Custodio Faria was formally installed in the City Square. Abbe Faria hypnotizing a lady at his feet, now almost a signature of Panjim City. It was the work of the famous Goan sculptor, Ramchandra Pandurang Kamat. Translated excerpt from contemporary newspaper of the time: At precisely 6 p.m. the public square was seen bubbling with people. So many people that some hung from the windows of surrounding houses.like so many human bunches. The Governor arrived with his military entourage. The band of the well known Mestre Caiado broke into celebratory music. On this Tuesday, 20th September of 2005, sixty years later, there will also be a celebration of sorts to honour this great man at the same venue. To commemorate his day of death and to commence the celebration of his 250th Birthday in 2006. In Search of Abbe Faria: The hypnotic vision of a Goan pioneer, a documentary by Isabel Santa Rita Vas and Cecil Pinto will be screened publicly for the very first time at the Prace Abade Faria, near the Old Secretariat, at 6 p.m. The movie launch and screening is made possible through a collaboration between the Corporation of the City of Panjim and Dhempe College of Arts Sciences. We don't initially intend selling copies of the movie nor allowing copies to be made. We will only accept requests for public screenings for which we will provide a copy of the DVD. Our intent is not to make this movie a dead 'document' that will be watched, archived and forgotten. We hope that public screenings will provide an atmosphere of discussion that will bring others too to appreciate the greatness of this truly inspiring Goan. Please do come. And forward this invitation to anyone you think might be interested in attending. Cheers! Cecil P.S. The movie is about 45 minutes long. Although the function is planned for 6.00 p.m. they will probably schedule the Chief Guest's speech first and then have the screening around 6.30 p.m. so the light will be right. Don't be late. The next public screening might not be so soon.

[Goanet] TIME HUNGRY TRAINING SHOULD RELOCATE
With reference to the apparent advertorial (sponsored article) in HERALD on Sept 17 by Neena Dayal titled Navy House -- The grit behind the glory, it is abundantly clear that the prime military mission of Dabolim is one of maritime reconnaisance ( though this may have to be shared with the Coast Guard). The secondary mission may be logistical having to do with keeping the naval base at Vasco well supplied. While training may be an important mission, it simply does not match the demands on Dabolim for civilian air traffic. Effectively chewing up seven hours a day it creates unaffordable bottlenecks at the airport which spills over into road traffic and network requirements and so on down the line. Unlike training, reccy and transport can perhaps be readily integrated into normal scheduling patterns. If necessary, night flying is also a feasible proposition at Dabolim for these purposes. Hence the urgent need is to get the Navy to expedite airport construction at Seabird in order to transfer training flghts to it at the earliest. The Navy is getting thousands of crores for an aircraft carrier, carrier based planes, submarines etc. Hence it should be able to wangle a few measly crores for a runway at Yenkebe.

Re: [Goanet] Route of 'Monorail' Goa
The Goa Govt. has decided to go in for the 'Monorail Project' between Mapusa, Panjim and Madgao, leaving out Vasco-Mormugao! Every day, thousands of people travel to and back from Vasco-Dabolim-Mormugao area, for work in the harbour and or Dabolim airport and other visits, as also to catch air flights and or meet friends and relatives arriving and departing by air. In fact there is as much traffic to and from this area to Madgao and to Panjim, as the Madgao-Panjim route. : : I hope the SGPIAG, the Goa Desc, other organisations, the politicians and other leaders will talk to the Govt. and enable this amended route. The Govt. of Goa will be the wiser, in listening to this idea and executing the same. [Goanet] Goanet Reader: Reclaiming Faria
Reclaiming Faria by V. M. de Malar [EMAIL PROTECTED] Today is a big day for Goa, it heralds the public return of a great son of the soil back into our collective consciousness. It's his death anniversary, and exactly 60 years since an enthusiastic crowd inaugurated his statue, and now Abbe Faria is back in the limelight with an evening's celebration planned at the foot of his iconic monument in Panjim. It's the mysterious pioneer's moment; we should all show up at 6 PM to demonstrate appreciation and learn more about his amazing life. Faria's achievements defy belief, considering he was an Indian born in the middle of an oppressive colonial period, in an era where skin colour defined rights and standing. It was frustration over this apartheid that compelled his father, Caetano Vitorino, to take his precociously bright son to Europe, where higher education was occasionally available without malicious interference of colonial racists. The future Abbe was thus forerunner for entire generations of ambitious Goans, who were similarly stifled at home and forced to troop out of the slumbering Estado da India to seek education and opportunity. Jose Custodio Faria was exceptional, however, and his father particularly ambitious. As a young priest at the elite Propaganda Fide college in Rome, he dedicated his doctorate thesis to the Queen of Portugal, and gained further notoriety by writing a study in honour of the Pope, who invited him to deliver a Pentecost sermon under the magnificent ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. At just 24, this charismatic young Indian was already being referred to with the honorific Abbe, and drawing interest in the corridors of great power that stretched between the Vatican and the Catholic powers that dominated Europe. He was invited to the Queluz Palace, with the Queen and her court in attendance. Young Faria climbed up to the pulpit, and froze; his poise lost at the sight of the dazzling luminaries. Abbe Faria's father whispered to the panicked priest in our robust mother tongue, hi sogli bhaji, kathor re bhaji. And get on with it our Abbe did; the relieved young man never forgot how powerful a few words of suggestion can be in impacting human behaviour. Don't get the wrong idea based on encounters with European aristocracy. Abbe Faria and his father were true Indian patriots before such concepts were coherently articulated. The older man bore lasting anger about corrosive Portuguese racism and was key plotter in the Pinto Rebellion of 1787, the second anti-colonial resistance movement in history. The main conspirators were priests, disaffected, like their leader, by crushing colour prejudice in the church hierarchy. The son was also a stalwart in the anti-colonial cause, and fled to Paris when his father's subversive role was discovered. There, he reportedly approached the visiting Tiger of Mysore, Tipu Sultan, to make common cause with the Goan resistance, to expel the Portuguese. Abbe Faria threw himself passionately into the tumult in France, led a battalion against the national Convention, languished in the Bastille (from where he is credited with inventing the modern version of a popular board game), and emerged to wage an acrimonious public battle with Anton Mesmer, about the nature of hypnosis. History has comprehensively proved Abbe Faria the victor, his was the first genuinely scientific approach to the question; his research and findings provide many crucial underpinnings for modern psychotherapy, for essential analysts like Freud and Jung. All this, plus immortalization by Alexandre Dumas in 'The Count of Monte Cristo' and yet we Goans have lost contact with Abbe Faria's important story, forgotten to keep his legacy alive, neglected to appreciate his significance. We Goans were fully globalized, seamlessly both Eastern and Western, centuries before the rest of India and the world and Abbe Faria must be acknowledged as the first exemplar in a distinguished line of what we now call NRI's. His story is very typically Goan in context, quite emblematic of the best elements of our character. There is fierce independence and uncompromising quest for opportunity wherever it may lie, there is spectacular cultural and linguistic fluidity. There is remarkable adaptability to circumstance, and the authentic Goan soul that thrills to the sound of our precious mother tongue. It's such a wonderful tale, it is a great Goan narrative, and today we will honour the life and legacy of Abbe Faria on the Panjim waterfront, and welcome him back into our prideful pantheon of true Konkani heroes. -- VM has been on Goanet for ages, since its early days, and has been inspired enough to return to Goa early and begin writing on local issues. He is working on plans to contribute his bit back to the state he spent his childhood days in. September 20 marks the day of the death and commencement of the celebration of Abbe Faria's 250th Birthday in 2006. In Search of Abbe Faria: The hypnotic vision
[Goanet] Garbage problems in Goa
I am glad to see Wendell and Margaret get on the bandwagon to fight the menace of garbage proliferation in Goa. The two issues that vex me the most in Goa are the lacadaisical hidebound bureaucracy and the lack of basic hygiene. I have spoken up at our Panchayat Gram Sabha meetings, and also raised the issue of garbage and roadside litter, with the then Chief Minister Parrikar at the annual NRI meeting. At the Panchayat meeting in typical bureaucratic fashion, they promised to form a Garbage committee. That was 3 years ago. Have not heard anything since. Mr, Parrikar promised to have the litter that lies along both sides of Highway 17 between Panjim and Mapuca, removed within 7 days. Perhaps something was done, but I did not see much of a change. Everyone passes the buck on to someone else and nothing gets done. Pretty soon, our once pristine Goa will be knee deep in garbage all over. There is such apathy and such a lethargic attitude among Goans. Most people dont even think it is a problem. I guess they are so used to seeing garbage that it has become a normal part of the scenery. The Government officials talk about tourism ? Would you want to invite a guest to your filthy home ? AFter giving up on the politicians, I try to keep my own neighborhood clean, by personally picking up litter, which mostly comes from the buses that ply our roads, once a week, and disposing of it in my private landfill, burning what can be burnt. We need more celebrities to get on the bandwagon to get the message out that we need to clear our Goa of garbage, so that we can return to the cleaner pre-Liberation days. If Liberation means we are now free to desecrate our beautiful state, then, I would rather live in shackles but in a clean and healthy environment.
