No one in India is going to miss a few thousand crabby and dis-satisfied expats. To be sure, some of it is disgusting and drives me nuts, but there are other things that more than compensate, and that's what I tend to focus on, and enjoy. India, believe it or not, has changed for the better over the last 35 years since I left it. It is we expats who have changed far more. It is we expats who have become accustomed to less chaotic, more sterile and more secure environments. By the way, the notion that India is a budding super-power does not come just from my biased and fertile imagination. My REAL superpower country is betting on it. Bill Gates is betting on it. -- Domnic Fernandes continues (Part II) his reminiscence of Mapusa of the 1950s http://www.goanet.org/index.php?name=Newsamp;file=articleamp;sid=426 -- I am not one of the writers who complains that too many posts detracts others from posting. The individuals who claim so, as have been shown, do not want to think anything original and are happy to just complain what others do. Beyond this, Pandu in his thoughtful post does make several valid points. The first moderator for a post are the writers themselves. When writers proudly proclaim their rejected-post as a badge of honor, it shows that some have lost their self-respect and their judgement. I have found the Goannet moderators very reasonable and doing a very fine job. They deserve our gratitude, not our scorn. We the posters need to help them. IMHO, often the post makes a good point. Yet in making that point, they allude to totally unnecessary adjectives or perspectives. From then on, the quality and language of the posts on that thread takes a dive into the gutter. Because as Mario puts it, every one has a right to respond and self-defense with even more abusive language. Using a separate committee (call it what you want) is similar to what it done in hospitals, business or politics. That separate committee can sort through the evolution of the miss-steps and come up with a solution to fit the abuse - anywhere from a slap on the wrist to disbarment for a short period of time or permanently. When it comes to allegations or libelous posts, (often on an unrelated subject) the damage is already done by the perpetrator (and the unsuspecting moderator). The victim then has to pick up the pieces and restore his / her credibility and reputation. Goans have the habit of standing tall by crawling and clawing (beating-up) on somebody else instead of standing on their own two feet. [Goanet] POEM: Palm Sunday (Tony Fernandes)
-- Domnic Fernandes continues (Part II) his reminiscence of Mapusa of the 1950s http://www.goanet.org/index.php?name=Newsamp;file=articleamp;sid=426 -- PALM SUNDAY At the triple chimes Of village church bell, We rose up early and saw In the serene stillness before the dawn The bright morning star in the East Right above the sky's edge; And as we turned our gaze Southwards above the horizon Saw the constellation Called the Southern Cross. Twinkling just above the backyard hedge. Too dark and early we thought To pluck the new shoot Of the coconut palm leaf; So while some of us lay in wait My siblings went back to sleep; As the sky lightened a little bit We saw the palm And cut it in right earnest With the last shooting star of the night Hastily streaking towards the west. Somewhere nearby The cock crew Heralding the early morn With its wakeup call; And a sudden rustle As the first bird of the day took flight From the mango tree Up my spine sent a slight chill. Careful were we Not to rip the young palm open; We decorated it the best we could In the light of the early morning dawn; Then donning our Sunday best Onwards we walked To the Church to have it blessed; Returned home With the sun up and bright and proudly we handed over the holy strands of the palm To the old folks In the village Still busy by the fireside They thanked, blessed and offered as a reward a cup of tea in return Intoning the timeless saying: God bless you my son. [Goanet] 7th April 1506 to 2006 - SFX - 500 years celebration
-- Domnic Fernandes continues (Part II) his reminiscence of Mapusa of the 1950s http://www.goanet.org/index.php?name=Newsamp;file=articleamp;sid=426 -- In the backdrop of the Archaelogical Society of India (ASI) maintained Basilica de Bom Jesus , where the sacred relics of St Francis Xavier are held in a silver casket, at Old Goa (Ilhas) Tiswadi taluka Goa the western State of India, over four thousand people assembled this evening at 1734 hrs IST at a specially erected shamiana to partake in the Eucharist Mass to celebrate 500th Birth anniversary of St Francis Xavier (07.04.1506) a native of Navarre in Spain. It was perhaps destined that a native of Spain should commence his missionary endeavours and also find his sacred relics held in one of Asia's most beautiful tiny State of Goa in India which gifted by nature could easily earn the sobriquet of the Spain of the East. Many faithfiul were taken by surprise of this celebration today, which otherwise received vide publicity in the local print media and on the internet in the past few days. This is because it is not the birth day but the death anniversary of the Saint on 3rd December, (and that of another i.e his most trusted friend St Ignatius de Loyola who died on 31st July 1556 ) that is being celebrated, as feast days. This year incidentally is also the 450th death anniversary of Saint Ignatius de Loyola and 5th centenary celebrations of the birth of Blessed Peter Faber of Villaret in Savoy on 13th April, 1506. The indomitable trio were indeed the co-founders alongwith some others of the Society of Jesus, which has today over 20,000 priests of this order world wide and the Goa Province which constitutes Belgaum Pune and Ajra Sidhudurga. In Goa there are 143 Jesuits. St Francis Xavier set foot on this soil at Old Goa just 100 metres away from the Basilica (where a monument stands testimony to his visit) in then Goa which constituted only Salcete Mormugao and Ilhas (now Tiswadi) the Velhas Conquistas (Old Conquests (1510-1961) nearly 464 years ago. It is here at Old Goa that he arrived from Torre de Belem in Lisbon (where a monument is erected as well (Fr Vasco Rego sj who visited the spot in Lisboa Portugal ) after he set sail and reached Goa via the river Mandovi after 6 months of voyage according to Fr Vasco De Rego ex Rector of the Basilica, and began his works in Asia to reap a good crop of faithful for Christianity. Following his death the Saint is revered not only in Goa and India as Goemcho Saib but by people world over. The decadal Expositions where the mortal remains are brought down from the specially erected altar for veneration by the faithful is a testimony to the Saint's following even several hundred years of his death enroute to China. Many a times when tragic incidents or a natural catastrophe e.g. tsunami affect other parts of the world or India, the it is not uncommon to see Goans always heave a sigh of relief and note with pride that nothing will happen so long as amcho Goemcho Saib is there. Even the Japanese who had established the first tradelinks for mining of ore from Goa to Japan pay homage to the Saint by describing Goa in the land of Saint Francis Xavier . The mass which witnessed the Main celebrant His Grace the Archdiocese of Goa and Daman, besides the Bishop Emeritus Most Rev. Dr Raul Niclau Gonsalves, Bishop of Belgaum Most Rev. Peter Machado and the Provincial of Society of Jesus (a society founded on 27.9.1540 ) was a solemn sung Mass as a glowing tribute to the Saint. It may be recalled that the members of the Society of Jesus were responsible for safeguarding the Konkani in the Roman script and setting up the first printing press in Asia to further its written communications to network with the large indigenous natives. They set up many educational institutions in Goa viz St brittos High School and Loyola High School Margao, the Baga Retreat Centre Fr Arrupe Home in Raia the Thomas Stephen Konknni Kendra the Xavier Historical and Research Centre at Porvorim are testimony of the service to the community. The newly appointed Bishop of Belgaum who partook in the celebrations was on his maiden visit to Goa and received a thunderous applause when he was introduced to the gathering by His Grace the Archbishop of Goa and Daman Filipe Neri Ferrao. A special Portuguese delegation was also present on the ocassion besides the Deputy Chief Minister of Goa Dr Wilfred A De Souza. A book on the life and times of St Francis Xavier by Minguel Correia Monteiro from Portugal was released by the Archbishop of Goa Daman Rev Filipe Neri Ferrao. [Goanet] Fact-finding committee report on Sanvordem violence
-- Domnic Fernandes continues (Part II) his reminiscence of Mapusa of the 1950s http://www.goanet.org/index.php?name=Newsamp;file=articleamp;sid=426 -- A mix of reports from today's press about the Milli Council fact-finding committee reports on Sanvordem violence. newkerala.com has some interesting takes on the BJP reaction, Navhind Times (this item not included) gives Parrikar's views that the members of the committee are psychologically disturbed! Herald, 7/4/06 Riots were politically planned: report BY HERALD REPORTER PANJIM, APRIL 6 — The All India Milli Council (AIMC) today released a “fact finding report” on the violence at Curchorem-Savordem which mentions that “the attack on the Guddemol mosque on the night of March 2-3 and the violence against the Muslim community living in Curchorem, Savordem and Guddemol, was part of a well planned strategy by political forces to communalise Goan society.” The AIMC appointed a 4 member team headed by SC human rights lawyer, Nandita Haksar to investigate into the violence. Addressing a press conference in the city Haksar said that the report “was to try to probe the root causes of communal violence.” The report covers the rise of communal politics in Goa, human rights violations of Muslims in Goa, the mosques at Socorro and Ekta Nagar, Mapusa. With reference to the speeches made by the BJP party members, the report mentions “that the BJP members including the ex-CM Manohar Parrikar and the local MLA Ramrao Desai continue to spread the disinformation not only about the actual incident but about Muslims in general. They are fuelling hatred and anger against the Muslims by telling blatant lies, spreading false rumours and making defamatory statements.” Referring to Parrikar’s speech on March 4, 2006, it mentions that “the former CM did not attempt to console the Muslims and his speech sent out the message that people responsible for the violence are the victims themselves.” On the role of the administration during the violence, Haksar and her team mentioned that “the civil administration has not acted with the responsibility that is expected of them. It is true that the police did offer protection to Muslims gathered inside the Curchorem mosque when the violence started. However they failed to protect the property of the Muslims.” Further, the report mentions that “the Congress party has no programme for countering the communalism and many of its MLAs and members are former members of the BJP. ” Haksar and her team have recommended that “the government must bring out a white paper telling the people the truth about the communal violence in Savordem-Curchorem.” Further “the government must have a programme against communalism and initiate a public debate on the issue of outsiders.” The other recommendations are that “the Muslims of Guddemol must be allowed to offer namaz which has been stopped by the local police and must be provided with land (which they will purchase) to build a mosque so that they can exercise their right to freedom of religion.” The recommendations have been submitted to the AIMC which will submit it to the government, Haksar said. The team appointed include editor of Lankesh Times Kannada weekly Bangalore, Gauri Lankesh, radio journalist, New Delhi, Vinod K Jose, and editor of Guide magazine, Bangalore, Bilidale Eesha. Also present was Iqbal Mohidin, member of the AIMC, Goa State. Navhind Times, 7/4/06 Bring white paper on Sanvordem riots, says Milli Council NT Staff Reporter Panaji, April 6: The All India Milli Council has demanded that the government of Goa must bring out a white paper telling the people the truth about the communal violence in the twin towns of Sanvordem and Curchorem. Attributing the violence to the rise of the “communal politics”, the report titled “Broken Peace” prepared by the fact finding team set up the council underlined that “the attack on Guddemol mosque” on the night of March 2/3 and the violence against the Muslim community living in Curchorem, Sanvordem and the hamlet of Guddemol was a part of well-planned strategy by political forces to communalise Goan society. The report which was released today by a member of the fact-finding team, Ms Nandita Haksar urged the state government to create the atmosphere for the Muslims in Goa to feel secure and name the real culprits, allow the Muslims of Guddemol to offer ‘namaz’ which has been stopped by the local police and provide land to the Muslims in Guddemol, which they would have to purchase, for building a mosque so that they can exercise their right to freedom of religion. I was told by Brig. D'Costa that there are some associations but he mentioned Jerome's association. Floriano has added to the information that Rene wants or has started one and that Vivian may be thinking of starting another one. In an earlier post, Vivian said he is no longer and NRI, having settled in Goa. I believe Vivian has tried to find out about these associations but without success. I suggest he contact Brig. D'Costa or Dourado. Someone on this forum requested for the emails of the three NRI FC members, and I too would like to have them. Perhaps, Wilson Coelho could provide Dourado's email. Another point, I saw just a couple of netters replying to my post on the NRI Dubai meet. So far, there's no one who has either supported the idea of a petition to the government to disband the NRI FC. It's such apathy on the part of NRGs that the NRI FC members take the NRGs for granted. NRGs should not be differential to those in authority. When the central government has bent over backwards to meet most of the demands of the NRIs/PIOs, the attitude of the Goa government needs to change. The Kerala government often sends delegation to the Gulf headed by a minister. Having attended a couple of their meetings, the debate among the officials and NRKs is tense and heated. No doubt the NRKs have a large number in the Middle East and a big economic force, the Kerala government has little choice but to listen to them. The NRK remittances to Kerala is much, much more than the NRG remittances to Goa. I don't know if there is need for an NRI association based in Goa. Once the the NRI FC website is updated and functioning, as Dourado promised he would do in a short time, NRGs could send their complaints, problems to the centre. Dourado, however, said that for any news item or for any NRG issue the website may receive thousands of posts. He said there is no staff to handle it. About NRI associations in Goa, there must be further thinking. I hope others contribute to the debate. Eugene Correia __ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo! I have high respect for priests and nuns for the love they shower on people specially the poor. I was born to a drunkard father who never gave us a decent living and as a result my mother, who was suffering from tuberculosis, had to work to bring us up. When the parish priest of the place where we were living came to know about our broken house, TB mother and a drunkard father he felt deeply touched and gave us both moral and financial support. He would personally ride a cycle with a small bag of rice, coconut and money and give it to us. He would tell our Catholic neigbhours to help us. He had a nice smile on his face and would hold us on his lap when he visited us. We were quite small at that time but the love he has given us will be remembered. Even though this priest went to another place the people continued to help us. It wrong to murder somebody and more so a priest who is a person of God. I was interested in highlighting inconsistencies in positions related to belief systems and ideologies, in general. -- Domnic Fernandes continues (Part II) his reminiscence of Mapusa of the 1950s http://www.goanet.org/index.php?name=Newsamp;file=articleamp;sid=426 -- Dear Josebab, Let me begin by stating that I agree 90% with what you say about the dismal state of affairs in many areas in present-day Goa. My only point is that we are only ourselves to blame for it. Decades after we have become a full-fledged self-governing State with our own elected Government, we can ill afford to indulge in our favourite Goan past-time of blaming others for our ills! As for your statement that Goans keep electing the same Alibabas because they are not adequately informed, I can tell you from personal experience that this is a lot of baloney. When I went campaigning as a candidate in the 1989 Assembly Elections, I was told by many voters that You are a good man. In fact you are too good a man to represent us, because you will not do our work (amchem kam korche nam) - which translates as you will not indulge in illegal and even criminal acts on our behalf. This, unfortunately being the case, I was trounced by the Alibaba! It is the unfortunate but bitter truth that the people keep electing the same Alibabas as a fully conscious choice and not because they lack adequate information about the candidate. The only hope is to sensitise them about the folly of their decision and the consequences thereof. Regards, ---Tony Correia-Afonso. -- Domnic Fernandes continues (Part II) his reminiscence of Mapusa of the 1950s http://www.goanet.org/index.php?name=Newsamp;file=articleamp;sid=426 -- Dear Bonefacio Lopes, You ask me what I have done to set matters right in Goa. It is not in my nature to boast about my modest achievements in the field of public service in Goa - I leave such activity to our professional politicians who take up full-page advertisements in the papers to do so on their respective birthdays! However, your challenge leaves me no option but to respond. 1) I was the first unopposed elected Member of our Village Panchayat way back in 1977 and served for the full term of five years without missing a single meeting. 2) I stood for election to the Goa Legislative Assembly from Benaulim Constituency as a candidate of the Gomant Lok Pokxx in 1989 and lost to Churchill Alemao. 3) I have been President of the Cana-Benaulim Sporting Association and Prime Sports Club for several years and, apart from promoting sports, these organisations have been actively involved in social service work in the village. 4) I am a co-founder and current Chairman of the Benaulim Environment Trust, engaged in protecting the environment, preserving the natural resources and improving the quality of life of the people of our village. 5) I am an active member of the Benaulim Citizens' Consumer Forum and have personally fought two successful cases before the District Consumers' Redressal Forum in Panjim. 6) I have been Past President and a Member of the Rotary Club for the the past 32 years, involved in community service and social welfare. 7) I have actively participated in all the campaigns involving the pulic interest, beginning with the Opinion Poll in 1967, the Konkani and Statehood agitations and the Konkan Railway re-alignment. 8) In 2001 I was President of World Wide Goans, founded to promote the getting together of Goans of the diaspora in their interest and that of Goa. Since I am not used to blowing my own trumpet, the above listing has caused me considerable embarassment, but I was provoked by your rather insensitive remark.I apologise to my fellow-netters for boring them with my post-retirement C.V.! I wish I could do more, but I have crossed 75 years in age with the consequent limitations. [Goanet] Africander hockey in Goa !
-- Domnic Fernandes continues (Part II) his reminiscence of Mapusa of the 1950s http://www.goanet.org/index.php?name=Newsamp;file=articleamp;sid=426 -- Hahahaha BC ! The guy's real name was Redento, a real genius taskmaster. ('Was'? I heard tell vaguely he's passed on ?). As you said, twas mainly the Africanders 6-a-side. I wasn't long in Goa, but played forward in some fun teams in the exciting Elitel tourneys mentioned above. Some great talent alongside, crazies like foot-smasher back Elias (Xavier's), weird hippy Loji D'Silva (Vasco), awesome wing Frisco (now in TO Canada), and the huge bumptious goalie Peter 'Fozno' Araujo (Vasco)! No dearth of Africander talent in both N S Goa, sadly mostly dispersed in the diaspora now. Guess all became Red Ants (umle) ! haha. Just kidding. On a more serious note, politics destroyed it all, Redento taking the brunt. Can't anybody do something ? Anything ?? I once played alongside a really talented, ebullient centre-forward called Jose 'Joey' Rodrigues (another Africander like us all). Today he's a prominent S. Goa lawyer and husband of the influential Nelly Rodrigues, of Zilla Parishad fame. Surely they can take on the current deadwood - C'mon guys ? We're thousands of km away now, but any help you need for Goan hockey, the ol' Africanders are there for you, you name it, you got it. It's not just the likes of Viren and Mervyn now, even from the old St. Stanislaus crowd etc., there have been quite a few Goan Olympians from E. Africa - maybe Gabriel can even tell us what happened to the fab Kenyan Olympiad duo of Edgar and Egbert Fernandes, who eventually migrated to Australia ?
