[Goanet] RE: Cornel's contention with .... WE ARE ALL GOANS
Dear Cornel, I did not say ³all Goans would have been of Turkish/Muslim provenance², if we all know the meaning of provenance. I did say that if it were not for the Portuguese, India would now be a Muslim nation, the biggest Muslim nation on earth, inhabited by people of Indian provenance and Islamic religion, there would be no India, just Pakistan all over the entire subcontinent (no Hindutva pride to celebrate). I am sure you understood my point but it serves your racial hatred purpose to mislead your fellow readers. Best regards Arjun _ Do not post admin requests to the list. Re: [Goanet] I'm back!!!
Dear Gilbert, My daughter knocked my laptop off the table and I am now given restricted access to my husband's computer. As such my responses are going to be very brief out of compulsions beyond my control :) I honestly don't have the answers to your several questions but far from "giving advice to God", being an agnostic, I think my stance is one of humility. Being agnostic simply means absence of knowledge. The problem I have with organised religion and latter day theists is the unwillingness to move from one position. Their stance is always that they are in possession of total knowledge and anything new is not to be entertained or tolerated. Religion like all organisms needs to be in a constant state of evolution. It always has been, perhaps at times so glacial that it misses the human eye. But we cannot stop evolving. Why do we now embrace this idea that all that there is know has been made known to us? My stance is simply "I know nothing" and if I discover something from this position than that will be something I truly believe in. Not something that has been handed down to me and forced upon me. As for me cracking codes or deciphering cryptic paintings, well I have no credentials to do either. I am a femme de menage of the "I once won a letter to the editor contest" variety and I have no pretensions beyond that. What I do have are theories. Lots of them. One of them being PDD. :) Elisabeth __ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo! Mail has the best spam protection around http://mail.yahoo.com _ Do not post admin requests to the list. Dear Mario, I think it's futile at this point to debate the whole Monica Lewinsky affair but this much is for sure; Clinton was probably one of the greatest Presidents, America ever had. His understanding of geopolitical issues alone puts him in a league of his own. His legacy will be a man of sheer brilliance and charisma, despite Republican efforts to constantly tar his reputation. So like I said, at this point debate is redundant, he's already earned his place in history. The same cannot be said of Bush whose second term approval rating is lower than the temperature in my freezer. [Goanet] The Indian stock market crash - an analysis
WHY SHOULD WE WELCOME THE STOCK MARKET CRASH? Swaminathan S. Anklesaria Aiyar Times News Network [Wednesday, May 24, 2006] Economics assumes that human beings are rational. But human reactions to stock market movements are utterly irrational. When markets rise, everybody cheers. When markets crash as has been the case for two weeks everybody moans. A hunt for culprits often ensues. No such hunt is ever announced when the markets are rising. In past scams, when manipulators like Harshad Mehta and Ketan Parekh sent share prices through the roof, they were hailed as geniuses and became celebrities. Some market experts cautioned that the markets had shot up to insane levels. But this plea for sanity was widely dismissed as stupid, and ordinary housewives and college kids bought frenziedly in the belief that share prices could only go up. However, when the markets inevitably fell, the hero-manipulators were suddenly denounced as villains. They were accused of the dreadful sin of rigging markets, and thus misleading small investors. Ironically, no investor complained as long as the manipulators rigged prices upward. The complaints began only when the manipulators were unable to rig markets any more, and prices crashed. Truth be told, the real public complaint against Harshad Mehta and Ketan Parekh was not that they manipulated prices upward, but that they failed to manipulate it upward forever. For that, this could not be forgiven. The underlying assumption of small investors is that share prices should rise forever. Now, if the price of rice, sugar or petrol rose forever, the small investor would complain bitterly. Yet he seems to think it perfectly fair that share prices should go up forever, and very unfair if share prices crash. How greedy and hypocritical humans are! Consider the current moaning over the stock market crash. The fall of the sensex from 12,624 to 10,400 represents a sharp 20% decline within two weeks. But few people seem to remember that sensex was at just 9,390 at the start of 2006. So, even after the crash last Monday, the sensex was still up 10.5% since the start of the year. No bonds or fixed deposits could give such a high return within five months. This point escapes the CPI(M), which sees the market crash as reason enough to stop pension funds from investing in equities. Remember that the sensex was around 5,000 during the last general election in 2004. It then slumped to 4,282 on panic selling. From that low point, the sensex tripled in two years to 12,624 on May 10, 2006. That has been a bonanza, fuelling speculative frenzy. So, the 20% correction is to be welcomed. Stock market valuations remained stretched by historical standards, though not by developed market standards. If the sensex falls all the way to the 9.390 level at the start of the year, the market would still have yielded enormous gains to investors since 2004. The long run prospects of the economy are excellent. So, some investor exuberance is understandable. Yet such exuberance needs to be tempered by sharp corrections from time to time. This sends the valuable message that exuberance is no substitute for judgement. Human beings quote many aphorisms that they seem to forget when they enter the stock market. All that glitters is not gold. Dont be penny-wise and pound-foolish. Look before you leap. There is no such thing as a free lunch. Better safe than sorry. A fool and his money are soon parted. All who invest in markets must remember these aphorisms. Risk and reward go together. If there were no risk, there would be no market reward. Share prices represent subjective judgements of the day, so bouts of euphoria and depression will necessarily drive share prices up and down. Marxists find this terrible. They deplore casino capitalism, and lambaste foreign institutional investors (FIIs). Marxists cannot bear to acknowledge that FII pressure has sparked capital market reforms that have made Indian markets among the best in the developing world, far ahead of China or South Korea. FIIs were earlier reluctant to invest in a market where one-tenth of all paper share certificates were forged, settlements were delayed for months on end, and thin turnover facilitated rigging by big brokers (and by companies before every public issue). But after capital market reforms, FIIs have flooded in. They have invested in all emerging markets, but disproportionately more in India. They have favoured companies with good governance and transparent accounting, rewarding these traits for the first time (earlier, the ability to rig markets was rewarded most). Stock market reforms and FII inflows have hugely improved the ability of Indian companies to raise equity finance for expansion. This has reduced their dependence on debt, thus reducing interest rates as well as over-leveraged balance sheets. The CPI(M) can see none of this. It believes only that foreign devils are making millions and paying no tax. So it d

[Goanet] RE: Cornel's contention with .... WE ARE ALL GOANS
From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Mario I have very mildly clashed with Ricardo previously on Goanet. If my memory serves me well, it was over his contention that, but for the Portuguese, all Goans would have been of Turkisk/Muslim provenance. Historically, this could well have been an alternative reality of course, but it was his implication that, the Goans ought to be grateful for Portuguese colonisation, because it was a better alternative, that I had found contentious. As for his next contention below, that, "all Portuguese came from Goa" (with or without a smiley), I prefer not to waste my time on obvious drivel. === Dear Cornel, I am in the process of reviewing your Vortex article wrt the Portuguese in Goa, as also the critique which it attracted. We intend to have it on the website as soon as we have cleared up up a few 'grey' areas ...but for now this is is response to the above from you. You are a well read man. Pray tell us what you believe would have been the more likely scenario IF not for the Portuguese arrival in Calicut, and more specifically the Battle of Diu. Did Pakistan and (now) Bangladesh become Islamic States by choice? What about Indonesia ? Now... please do take the time and explain the contention you have with Ricardo. Are you saying that the Portuguese arrival and eventual colonization was NOT a better alternative than the Turkish/Moghal control of Goa? >From your reading of History, would you NOT say that the Hindu Kings went >along with the program ..whoever the Real Masters were - as long as their own interests were OK? IF you agree with that - do you believe that the poor, oppressed and 'untouchables' would have reached this far (Shankaracharya having been noted), IF not for the Colonial Powers? This is a very important historical background to be taken into consideration while critically assessing the so-called contribution of the Ranes to Goa's freedom struggle. Hi Elisabeth, It looks like your thinking cap was in the microwave getting super-charged.:=)) I have to state at the outset that I am not as smart in connecting the dots (real and imaginary) as you. Perhaps you are a member of Mensa. I could not find the decode words as Dan Brown found in his research when he read all those documents from Jerusalem to Southern France. I could not find those (real and imaginary) connections even after it was pointed out. But I felt vindicated when another authority on the TV program said, "There was never any link between a V being a feminine symbol or a woman's womb in any artistic language" that he knew off etc etc. I do not know if you saw the History Channel on the "Beyond the Da Vinci Code" program. My responses to you specific points follow your statements. Kind Regards, GL Elisabeth Carvalho: How are you? GL: Thanks for asking. I am on top of the world. Work is busy and very gratifying. Next week our second 3-million-dollar Linear Accelerator (for the production of X-rays) will be coming on line in our department. With it, among other things we will be able to do radio-surgery which is (bloodless) surgery using an X-ray knife. This has been done routinely for deep seated brain tumors. And now it is being applied for lung cancer among other sites. EC: How is the grandchild? GL: The grandchildren are doing great. Grandma is busy (actually having fun) with them in California rather than in New York. EC: The only thing I would like to add is that Dan Brown is neither a historian nor a theologian. He's a novelist. GL: Fictional novel are nice stories. It's like a fresh wind. For most of us that air is a passing moment in our life. For a few that air stays in their make-belief environment. EC: Far more damning books have been written about Christ by the likes of Freke or Gandy. The reason the Church routinely dismisses them without so much as a second thought is because they never make it to the mainstream. They are the companions of lonely agnostics such as myself on a journey of self-discovery. GL: I wish you (and other agnostics on Goanet) could respond to my post (a few days ago) which was in reply to Santosh Helelkar. And feel free to be more generous with your thoughts and response in giving your perspectives about absence of God. The agnostics are usually articulate about criticisms of other peoples' beliefs. Just a thought for you and other agnostics - During the solitary journey of discovery, Sorrow looks back, Worry looks around, and Faith looks up! EC: To me, the personal life of Jesus is as divorced from his message as Clinton's should have been from his politics. GL: I cannot make head or tail of this statement as it related to Jesus Christ or to Bill (I assume) Clinton. I should not assume you are referring to Bill, as Hillary is our fine New York senator and the likely next President of the USA. I need to let you on my bias - Even as a Republican, I love all three of them AND this includes their messages and their politics. For any true believer, the message should be in their personal life especially regarding what they believe. Or else they would be the biggest hypocrites to exists. EC: If the historical Jesus was crucified, in all likelihood given the severity of Roman crucifixions, he died. If he died, his Resurrection is irrelevant. Being God, he wouldn't need to make petty points to human beings by chauvinistically resurrecting himself in any form. It is only the human mind unable to come to terms with its own mortality that yearns for postmortem assurances. GL: Can you put this into plain English? Is your point that Jesus is not God like the Gnostics belief? Just asking to make sure what you are trying to mean. I have a problem with someone who does not believe in God, jumping three leaps in analyzing the nuances of a particular religion; or a belief in one or the other faith. Another pointer: Unless you can create the WHOLE universe, then perhaps giving "advice" to God, isn't such a good idea. In summary, as a friend, I applaud you for your thought process. It reminds me of the saying, "a turtle only makes progress when it sticks out its neck". And yet, standing in the middle of the road can be dangerous. One can get knocked down by the traffic from both ways. I look forward to your thoughts on the questions posed to Santosh. [Goanet] Meet to protest alcohol
15th May, 2006. Various organisations and individuals demanded the withdrawal of the Government’s proposal to sell beer and wine outside bars and liquor outlets. Bailancho Saad called the meeting at T. B. Cunha Hall to protest the promotion of alcohol by the Government. The meeting decided to make a representation to the Government demanding 1.Withdrawal of the proposal by the Government to sell beer and wine outside bars and liquor outlets 2.Withdrawal of the proposal to reduce taxes on alcohol. 3.Stop Government promotion of alcohol like Wine Escapade 4.Increase budgetary allocation to start facilities for detoxification centres, help centres for women and children of alcoholics 5.Strict implementation of excise laws. It was decided to meet after fifteen days to take stock of the situation and decide the future course of action. Ms Sabina Martins gave the background of women’s struggle against alcohol in Goa.In Tivrenm,Marcel thare was a long drawn struggle by women to stop the opening of bar In Bicholim the women got together to get the bar timings implemented as per the excise act. In Ponda similarly women took up the issue of illegal sale of alcohol in houses. Women have impressed on the Panchayat members not to isssue NOC to more bars so much so that it was agreed that if the majority of the women did not want liquor outlets no permission would be given. Many schools have also objected to bars in its vicinity Ms Martins stated all these struggles will go in vain if the Government goes ahead and promotes alcohol. Ms Lalan Kerkar of Peaceful society stated that addiction in children and youth will increase and the future of young girls and brides are at stake. Mr Govekar stated that when he lived in Siolim there were 126 barsand 3 teashops. The morning walkers could get hold of a pint at five in the morning. Ms Savitri Chari from Shri Lailari Self Help Group stated that in their village of Shirgao there are no bars. However the men go to Assnoda to drink and by the time they reach the village they become sober. Adv Annusiya Naik of Kripa foundation stated that there should be mass awareness and women should come out in large numbers to oppose the policy. Mr Ashpak Shaikh from Life line stated that there is a disparity in the empowerment of women in the towns and villages and hence they are not in a position to tell the males not to drink.Hence it is the responsibility of the government to enact policies that will reduce drinking. Mr Deepak Bhandargee who works among the migrants in Chimbel stated that in that area there are many aloholics who do not work. The wives who go out to work are expected to bring a quarter of alcohol everyday while returning otherwise they are beaten and sometimes not allowed in the house. Ms Afrose Shaikh of Bailancho Saad stated that in her village in Bicholim , there are 18 bars and several young men have died due to alcohol related sickness. As a result there is a large number of widows who live in destitution. Of late they got employment in a cashew-peeling factory hence they are surviving. Mr Sunil R Sonsurkar of Sai Life care stated that in rural areas like Usgao women are very vulnerable .No man will listen tthem he stated hence it is important that the men are made aware . Ms Bharati Bandodkar of Peaceful Society stated that the number of accidents due to drunken driving has increased and now with easy availability of alcohol to young children the situation will worsen. Mr Victor Mendes of Saad Alashiro stated that there is a direct link between alcohol and AIDS as an alccoholic gets into irresponsible sexual behaviour and all the awareness of precautions goes to the wind. Mr Sorter Almeida stated that extra tax should be levied to reduce accessibility. There should be a ban on sale of alcohol in school fetes. He stated one should not depend on panchayats as it depends on the person in the chair who keeps changing. Ms Harsha Raiker of Temps Hamlet Self-Help Group stated that they were opposed to the policy and requested all the self-help groups to take a stand. Several other issues were raised by participants such as livelihood, import of alcohol, drowning of drunk tourists, liquor served in swimming pools, increased violence against women and children and lack of support systems for them. Re: [Goanet] Re: War and women
It's true that women can fight as dirty as men but I think the motivations are different. Men are ferociously competitive. As Genghis Khan said, "It is not sufficient that I succeed. Everyone else must fail". Women on the other hand stop at "I must succeed". Perhaps I'm looking at it with rose-tinted glasses and a slighly biased point of view. [Goanet] India protests over Pope comments
India protests over Pope comments Benedict's XVI's envoy received a dressing downIndia has summoned the Vatican envoy in Delhi in protest over comments by the Pope in which he condemned attempts to ban religious conversions. India's junior Foreign Minister, Anand Sharma, told parliament on Tuesday that the envoy was told in "no uncertain terms" of India's disapproval. The Pope criticised India last week for what he called "disturbing signs of religious intolerance". India's main opposition party, the BJP, has already protested to the Vatican. 'Religious intolerance' Pope Benedict XVI made the comments last week while talking to India's new Ambassador to the Vatican, Amitava Tripathi.Religious conversions are a controversial issue The pontiff criticised India for "disturbing signs of religious intolerance which have troubled some regions of India". He specifically cited attempts by some Indian states to introduce legislation to ban what right-wing Hindus call "forced conversions". India's foreign ministry has now reacted strongly to Monday's papal comments. "India is a secular and democratic country, in which adherents of all religious faiths enjoy equal rights," said Junior Foreign Minister Anand Sharma. Interference Correspondents say that Mr Sharma made the comments in response to opposition criticism that India had not protested against the "grossly unwarranted" statement from Rome. Rajnath Singh, the President of India's main opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) wrote to the Pope on 20 May. "My interference in your religious domain within the Vatican will be unwelcome, uncalled for and will be treated as interference in your religious management and administration," the letter said. Earlier this month, the state governor of India's western state of Rajasthan refused to sign a contentious religious freedom bill, which would have banned people from being converted to religions "against their will". Human rights agencies and minority groups also opposed the bill, saying it was introduced to appease radical Hindu groups. But the BJP-led Rajasthan government, led by the BJP, said that the bill had been introduced to stop religious conversion by means of allurement, greed or pressure. The BJP says that it supports legislation to ban "forced religious conversions", because many Christian missionaries recruit converts among the majority Hindu population using financial and educational enticements. Christians make up just over two percent of India's 1.1 billion mainly Hindu population. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/south_asia/5009238.stmABOUT GULF-GOANS e-NEWSLETTER This first of its kind Gulf-Goans e-newsletter archived at www.yahoogroups.com/group/gulf-goans is dedicated to Goans around the Globe and is moderated/edited by Gaspar Almeida (since 1994) and presented by Ulysses Menezes, owner of http://www.goa-world.com website. [Goanet] Indian artist Souza hits $1.17 mn in Sotheby's May auction
Indian artist Souza hits $1.17 mn in Sotheby's May auction Indo-Asian News Service London, May 24 (IANS) Francis Newton Souza ruled the roost at Sotheby's May auction of The Indian Sale here with his "Amsterdam Landscape" going for $1.175 million to a private collector. Sotheby's raked in a total of $7.96 million for artefacts as well as Indian contemporary art at its auction Tuesday. "Today's sale shows the market entering a new phase with evidence of a mounting appreciation and demand for important works by the top artists from an increasingly informed, discerning and expanding group of collectors," said Sotheby's head of sales Edward Gibbs. The sale also demonstrated the growing strength of the Indian miniature painting market. "A packed saleroom witnessed buoyant bidding with telephone bidders and clients from all over the world reflecting a truly international market," he added. "We are particularly pleased with the result for `Amsterdam Landscape' by Francis Newton Souza, published by Edwin Mullins in 1962, which brought 624,000 pounds - the second highest price achieved at auction for a work by the artist." The large number of Souzas in the auction also spoke about the demand for the artist. Souza's untitled Nude went for $584,980, almost double of what it was estimated at, while his chromatic rendition of "The Chance" went for $500,550. Tyeb Mehta's "Trussed Bull" created in 1967 had a somewhat disappointing finality at $437,227. A few Razas in the auction, too, had a lot of promise but it was his "Earth" that went for $331,690. However, the beauty, Raza's "Tejas", a work from his Shantibindu series that is soft ethereal and dulcet in its tone, went unsold. Ram Kumar's landscape, a sombre hued stroked entity went down for $236,706. J. Swaminathan's brilliant evocation of "Udghosh" from the Bird, Mountain And Tree Series 1974, which was the crowning glory of the auction, went for an appreciable $395,012. A host of Akbar Padamsees were also included in this auction, but his best was the untitled Metascape that went down for $521,657. All Husain lovers know that it is works from the 1950s and 1960s that have been his hallmark best. Among a large number of Husains in the auction, a few were sterling works -- his "Blue Girl", a work of 1963 done in the old veiled mystic style, estimated at $112,00-150,000 went for a very disappointing $226,152. His other works, too, did not fetch earlier rewards reflected at other auctions. "Strangely there was no excitement at Husain's works, and the bids were too few and far from feverish. I think that the Bharat Mata incident has put off a number of NRIs," said a collector, who wished to remain anonymous. However, Sotheby's officials were happy. Head of sales Edward Gibbs and international head of modern and contemporary Indian paintings Zara Porter Hill said: "We are delighted with the results of today's sale which confirmed the underlying strength of the market for modern and contemporary Indian paintings, a collecting category that has experienced remarkable growth in recent years. "The overall driver for this trend has been the growth of the Indian economy and a raised awareness of the important contribution of Indian artists in the 20th century." _ Do not post admin requests to the list. But there is hardly anybody around to watch him in action. For when the Governor turbs up at Campal to enjoy the racquet and shuttle game, it means most others have to be kept out. After he leaves the royal precincts of Raj Bhavan and arrives at Campal, accompanied by an entrourage of cars, police and security, the ordinary citizens and sportsmen availing the infrastructure at Indoor Stadium have to wait. We are not allowed to play when the Governor is playing. This is just not fair, a regular visitor bemoaned. Francis Almeida, a retired banker who plays badminton says, Twice, whilst I was playing badminton with friend in the evening, I was asked to wrap up my game to make way for the Governor due to security reason. Another lady says We are not even allowed to enter the Indoor Stadium, when the Governor playing inside.. Re: [Goanet] WE ARE ALL GOANS
Mario I have very mildly clashed with Ricardo previously on Goanet. Nevertheless, I sincerely wish him well with all my heart. What would Goanet be if it did not receive contentious material? [Goanet] IS OBFUSCATION THE NAME OF THE GAME AT DABOLIM?
http://pib.nic.in/release/release.asp?relid=17975 NEW INTERNATIONAL TERMINAL BUILDING FOR GOA AIRPORT -- 15:41 IST Rajya Sabha There is plan for a new international terminal building and additional parking stands at the Dabolim Airport in Goa. This information was given by Shri Pratel Patel, Minister for Civil Aviation in the Rajya Sabha today. This, he said, would improve the facilities and augment the additional spaces for international operations from Goa. As of now various facilities have been provided in the Goa Airport for international operations within the existing terminal building. The Airports Authority of India has already initiated action for acquiring additional land from the Indian Navy and the State Government for the expansion of the apron and the expansion of the international terminal building complex. **The Minister also informed the House that a total of 15655 international and domestic flights have operated at the Dabolim Airport in 2005-06. The passengers handled per day during peak season (November to February) in the Dabolim sector varies from 1153 to 1241 in the international sector and 978 to 2428 in the domestic sector. During lean season(May to September) passengers handled per day is as low as 41 for international and 1141 for domestic sector .** MC/GK -- Note the way data about Dabolim as been reportedly presented by the Civil Aviation Minister. He starts off well by giving current figures about "flights". This can now be compared to the "aircraft movements" for 1995-96 and 2013-14 given earlier. The updated totals are 8824, 15655 and 21708 respectively in serial order. Very roughly, this implies a near doubling in 10 years and projected growth of only 50% in the next 8 years. That is a CAGR of about 7% earlier vs only about 5% in future. The latter may be too low when the aviation scene (in terms of new airlines and new aircraft) has been growing phenomenally at present. A figure of at least higher than 7% should have been used. Hence, 8% would make it 80% higher than current levels. Then the hon minister switches to passengers handled per day. During the peak season, international passengers average about 1200 per day (plus or minus 50). The swing in domestic passengers is higher -- from about 1000 to 2500 although the latter may reflect the Dec/Jan spike. However, for the off peak period, the information is switched to minima! Why not give ranges to be consistent? International drops off dramatically as a result but it is not clear if this refers only to charter flights or includes international passengers on scheduled domestic flights also. Perhaps the latter maybe even just NRGs! The domestic passengers average holds up reasonably well if you allow for the sharp spike in Dec/Jan. I dont know if the unhomogenised data are due to the civil aviation ministry's lack of statistical sophistication in reporting or military control over Dabolim where this is probably given least importance. _ Do not post admin requests to the list. [Goanet] HERE WE GO AGAIN! [2nd try]
http://www.navhindtimes.com/stories.php?part=news&Story_ID=052314 BJP launches Mopa awareness drive NT News Service 1. What exactly are the "limitations"? The runway is big enough to accommodate 747s. The terminal is expected to be expanded by the 7-9 acres of land to be released by the Navy. It is the landing and take-off slots which are at a premium in a low cost aviation regime. And this constraint is solely because of the Navy's guile. It may require a political battering ram -- not a feather duster --to achieve a breakthrough on this particular front. 2. Why is the work on re-designing Mopa to function in tandem with Dabolim for the long haul not being undertaken? Why is no one saying anything about traffic sharing in a period of much higher growth than was factored into the original Mopa report? How do the pro-Mopa elements answer the pro-Dabolim faction's fears that Dabolim wll die a natural death once Mopa goes onstream. It's no use Navy people saying that "Dabolim will remain a civilian airport till kingdom come". We dont want it to become a VVIP/private jet enclave with ordinary folks shunted to a distant new airport which results in higher air fares. Traffic growth projections and traffic sharing must be discussed upfront and continuously monitored and adjusted for joint viability by an agency sitting in Panjim, not Delhi. The problems of night flights at Dabolim must be meaningfully addressed and not allowed to be an excuse for dilly dallying by the Navy over slots. We need to see some "learning" in Goa about the aviation scene, for Goa's sake. Over a year has gone since the issue broke and we are still spinning wheels with the same tired arguments. [Goanet] CIVIL AVIATION MINISTER"S LOGIC CUTS SORRY FIGURE
http://www.zeenews.com/znnew/articles.asp?aid=297334&ssid=50&sid=BUS In yesterday's TOI there is a story titled "Free landing, cheaper ATF at smaller cities". It begins by itemising five year 'holiday' from parking and navigation charges for operating 'feeder services' (presumably from small towns to metros); and a mere 4% levy of duties on ATF (vs 24-38% charged at most airports). But what takes the cake is the following: "The airlines that choose to operate flights between small towns spread across India and connect them to major metros will also be offered concessions for overnight parking of planes AT SOME OF THE METROS LIKE MUMBAI AND DELHI, civil aviation minister Praful Patel said." Now the hon Minister never fails to give lip sevice in TV appearances to the need for reducing the concentration of Mumbai and Delhi in the country's air traffic scenario. This is generally placed at a minimum of 50% and could be as high as 70% for the two. All along the talk was about encouraging new airlines to use smaller arports as bases. Now we have a switch which involves incentives to feeder airlines to not only fly to congested metros but park their planes there! What's the big idea? In his heart of hearts the minister seems to subscribe to the old fashioned hub and spoke system of airline route planning. What is needed in India is the point-to-point system of direct low cost flights. Feeder airlines should be prepared to fly to smaller airports near the metros. Thus part of the journey on such airlnes could be by surface transport (car, bus, taxi, train etc). In this way, the metros like Mumbai and Delhi can be bypassed if needed and congestion would be alleviated. _ Do not post admin requests to the list. Goanet mailing list (Goanet@goanet.org)
