Hi Herman:

Hope you are well. I am trying to find out if there is a Goan association in
Queens, NY through your Goanet organization.

I am involved in helping to organize the Potta Retreat in Boston and
have been getting calls from New York. A young Goan lady called today
to register for the retreat and asked if there are any Goan groups she
can connect with in NY. Could you let me know what resources are
available to find this out?

Thanks so much for your help,

Fiona

I understand and agree that we can all get along.
But can we get along with people who come in with
devilish intentions?

in the 70s or 80s i remember in Goa, we could go out
with our doors open, just a dog to guard the house.
Try doing it now.

I was very happy and proud that the Goan Police was
quick to nab the culprits, but if proven guilty, they
should be brought to extreme justice, not holding them
in prison at the cost of the state, for another 10-25
years before they get released again. A
strong law and rule is required to ward off such
dubious characters, otherwise Goans peaceloving life
will be engulfed with problems

I SUPPORT THAT.

I THINK PEOPLE COME TO GOA AND ARE TAKING ADVANTAGE OF
THE OPENDOOR, GOOD HEARTED AND PEACELOVING GOANS.

THE GOVERNMENT OF GOA TOGETHER WITH THE RESIDENTS OF

FIRM IRON HAND IN DEALING WITH SUCH PROBLEMS

I REGRET THE DEATH OF FR. EUSEBIO, ALTHOUGH HE MAY
HAVE FORGIVEN THE KILLERS. MAY HIS SOUL REST IN PEACE.

BUT MY OPINION IS A MURDERER SHOULD BE HANGED

IN SOME OF THE GULF STATES THEY TEAR THE BIBLE AND

Secondly why are the Christians quite about the book

this book not going against Christianity?

2006-03-01 Thread Herman D'Souza
Hello Helen

Reference to your email can you tell me what are the
chances of a person being hit by a car while walking
on a pavement?

There are chances but that may be either one in a
hundred or million.

so same goes with snakes in Goa. I have lived in Goa
in the village and in a apartment in the city, before
coming to UK. I did see snakes, mongoose, monkeys, ant
eater, foxes, reptiles and various other animals, and
I enjoyed their sights.

But in the city you will not come across any such
animals cause they love to stay in their habitat only.

Hope this answers your query. I am sure you and your
husband will love Goa and its beautiful natural
surroundings.

Dear Goanetters,

On behalf of the Goanet admin and volunteers, I like to wish you and yours a
joyous and happy Christmas and a prosperous new year!

We'd like to thank you for your continued support. And, we hope that you will
continue to support us well into the future.

This year we'd like you to think of Goanet at Christmas. Here are a few ideas
of ways you can give to Goanet:

1. Make a donation by using the PayPal link at http://www.goanet.org/. Goanet
is a volunteer-driven non-profit organization. All the money donated goes
towards maintaining the network and running community building projects.

2. Send us 10 email addresses of friends and family. We'll make contact and
send an introductory message to these people asking permission to subscribe
them to Goanet. We won't subscribe anyone with first getting their permission.

3. Link to us from your website. It's simple, just add a link to
http://www.goanet.org

4. Play a part in running Goanet and volunteer with the Goanet volunteers.

If you have any questions or comments, please feel free to email at
[EMAIL PROTECTED]

Thank you, once again, for your support. And, we wish you and yours families
the very best for 2006.

Dear Goanetters,

It gives me great pleasure to announce that Goanet is starting a women's
support group. As you can imagine it's going to be hard to establish a network
to support women from scratch. But, we're dedicated to trying our best to
succeed.

We have a new volunteer who will oversee these projects. Please join me in
welcoming Meera Noronha to the fold. Meera lives in Kanpur, Uttarpradesh. She
works with special children in the Spastics Centre. She is also involved in
different local social organizations. You can reach Meera at [EMAIL PROTECTED]

To start, we thought that we'd build up a database of organizations which help
abused women. The database will include organizations worldwide so that abused
women anywhere can find resources for help closeby.

We'd like to request that all those already involved in women's groups to
please respond with details of your organisation. Please let us know where you
are located and what you do to empower women. We'd also like to invite others
to volunteer on this project, especially counsellors. In time, perhaps we
could
provide some counselling services, anonymous or otherwise, or merely be a
point
of contact to point women in right direction to get help.

Furthermore, if the women on this forum are interested, we'll provide
you with a women's only mailing list. This forum would encourage women to
discuss issues and help support the women empowerment projects that we
undertake.

If you have any ideas on how we can go about setting up projects to help women
and empower them, please send us your suggestions. Better still, we'd like to
encourage you to volunteer to help us establish some worthwhile services. For
those involved in any women's groups locally, please respond giving reference
to your organization and work place.

Please join us in supporting our women and our community.

Best wishes,

Herman

George Pinto (GP) asked: 1. Were nuns consulted in the
process? Or was
it a male only decision
process?

Herman D'Souza (HP) 1:. Do nuns take all the decisions
of the church
and the parish or only the
priests?

GP II: I take it that nuns were not consulted.
Assuming that is true,
the paternalistic
male-centered approach would benefit by consulting
nuns. Nuns after
all run schools, orphanages,
hospitals, and could offer input.

Ans III) so also there are lay catholic men and women
running big companys who can offer inputs. but the
fact is the priests run the church headed by the
Bishop / Cardinal in Bombay. most of the religions
have always been a male centered.

***
GP 2. Were lay Catholics consulted? Or was it a
religious directive
from people who have not spent
time in the challenges of marriage?

HD 2 Ans: Maybe they have contacted the lay catholics.
but lay people
too have different opinions
just like you and me.

GP II: On such a significant issue concerning lay
Catholics, I am
surprized that consulting them
is considered an option, and not a necessity.

Ans III) Maybe they have contacted lay people. but
everyone has a different opinion just like you and me.

***
GP 3. Does the policy reflect an underlying
intolerance of and
superiority over other religions?
Btw, other religions are restrictive too when it comes
to marriage.

HD 3. Ans. Its not an underlying intolerance of
superiority
but on the contrary it is the diminishing number of
catholic girls who
marry in the church with
other faiths as a fashion and land up following the
other religion.
(although some girls stick to
catholism).

GP II: This works both ways as you point out. In a
multi-religious &
secular society, respect for
each religion or lack of religion is important. I am
not sure the
directive promotes that. Why not
merely suggest people marry within their religion if
that is the goal,
why the need for a
directive?

Ans III) cause this is not written in the bible to
marry within the religion so the priest cannot impose
it on people. however they can restrict the catholic
marriages within the church

***
GP 4. Are more Catholics going to marry Catholics
under the policy or
move away from the church -
and marriage?

HD 4: only time will tell. but the point is with this
policy the
priests are trying to do what is
in their capacity to avoid the
catholic girls specially marrying into other
religions.

GP II: Religion is one aspect of a marriage, there
are other
significant issues. Would a Hindu
boy and Catholic girl both from North Goa have a
better chance at a
successful marriage than a
Catholic girl from North Goa and a Chinese Catholic
boy?

Ans III) you are going away from the subject. any
marriage can be successful or not depends upon how
they live their life and interact with each other. we
are talking about performing catholic marriages in the
church and not about a boy from india marrying a girl
from timbaktu.

To summarize, catholics instead of supporting the
priest always try to bring hurdles and thats how
catholicism is being slowly branching into different
forms of christianity

1. Were nuns consulted in the process? Or was it a
male only decision process?

Ans. Do nuns take all the decisions of the church and
the parish or only the priests? or are they consulted
about the running of the parish ? think about this
answer first and then you will get your answer to your
quetion.

2. Were lay Catholics consulted? Or was it a religious
directive from people who have not spent
time in the challenges of marriage?

Ans: Maybe they have contacted the lay catholics. but
lay people too have different opinions just like you
and me. even they keep on contacting lay people they
will never be able to make a decision cause there are
millions of lay people who some may agree and some
dont.

3. Does the policy reflect an underlying intolerance
of and superiority over other religions?
Btw, other religions are restrictive too when it comes
to marriage.

Ans. Its not an underlying intolerance of superiority
but on the contrary it is the diminishing number of
catholic girls who marry in the church with other
faiths as a fashion and land up following the other
religion. (although some girls stick to catholism) To
make the catholic faith stronger there should be some
rules set up by the church which we should abide by
it.

4. Are more Catholics going to marry Catholics under
the policy or move away from the church - and
marriage?

only time will tell.

but the point is with this policy the priests are
trying to do what is in their capacity to avoid the
catholic girls specially marrying into other
religions.

I will tell you an incident where a catholic girl got
married into the other religion thru the church and
although she was a catholic she stopped going to the
church due to her husbands family policy. at the end
when she died her own family wanted to bury her by
catholic rites. but her husbands family did not allow
saying that she is in his religion and the final rites
had to be done in his religion.

this is one of the many cases which happens

I hope this satisfies your questions.

first of all you should respect the priests as they are sacrificing their full
lives for God.

if you have seen other religions you will understand why they have come to
such decisions.

do you know in islam a muslim lady is not allowed to marry into any other
religion. if she gets married the man also has to be a muslim.

however a muslim man is allowed to get married to a non muslim lady, and the
children have to be muslims

in doing this they increase the population of muslims.

everyone has a different opinion as all are different, and I think the priests
have taken this stance based on the overall feedback they must have got from
their experiences of performing marriages

Its not about intolerance against any other religion By doing this they will
not stop mixed marriages as people who are determined will get married to whom
they like, but atleast they are trying to protect and increase the diminishing
catholic population

we are laymen and sitting in our comfortable homes we can comment anything.
but before we comment please try to do the sacrifices and work what the
priests and nuns are doing.

In response to your query it cannot be considered to
be a mixed marriage.

when a person converts before marriage be it a hindu
muslim jew or christian, to the faith of his or her
spouse and both are of the same religion it cannot be
termed as mixed marriage.

they can then get married into either a temple,
mosque, synogogue or church as both will then belong
to same faith.

only during marriage when both are of different
religions they are termed as mixed marriage

[Goanet] GOANET ADMIN: Launching Goanet-careers

Dear Goanetters,

We are proud to introduce a new mailing list as part of the Goanet family -
Goanet-careers!

Goanet-careers intends to be a platform where Goans can reach out to assist
other Goans by way of career guidance, counselling, job searches, posting
jobs, job placement assistance, immigration, accommodation, settling anew...
and more.

As we all know, many Goans have left India and have become entrenched
successfully in the new countries they embraced. Other Goans have emigrated
out of Goa to other parts of India and have excelled. And, many Goans have
excelled in Goa itself. As such, many of us are in a position to offer someone
a job, to advertise openings in our companies/institutions, or to provide some
sort of career guidance in a field that is familiar to us. Our Goan community
needs a network to link those "in the know" with fellow Goans in need of such
information. Goanet-careers aims to be such a network.

Though this seems to be a challenging venture, it is an attainable one. As in
other community projects, the success of "Goanet-careers" will be achieved
only by active participation of the Diasporic Goan community and Goans in Goa.
We, therefore, encourage you to assist Goans worldwide by playing an active
role in the Goanet-careers network.

Please send a message to [EMAIL PROTECTED] to subscribe to this mailing
list or subscribe at:

[Goanet] Goanet Wiki - Online encyclopedia on Goa

2005-09-28 Thread Herman Carneiro
Dear Goanetters,

I'd like to invite you to contribute to our recently launched wiki -- the
Goanet Wiki. Please see http://www.goanet.org/wiki

A wiki (pronounced: weekee) is a web application that allows users to add
content, as on an Internet forum, but also allows anyone to edit the content.
The term Wiki also refers to the collaborative software used to create such a
website.

Like many simple concepts, "open editing" has some profound and subtle effects
on Wiki usage. Allowing everyday users to create and edit any page in a Web
site is exciting in that it encourages democratic use of the Web and promotes
content composition by nontechnical users.

The aim of the Goanet Wiki is to build an online encyclopedia on Goa. We'd like
to request that you create a user account before editting information in the
Wiki. We'd also like to request that you follow the basic rules that we use on
the Goanet mailing lists. We'd like to encourage diplomatic exchange of
information from anyone who wishes to participate.

I'd like to stress that the Wiki is very easy to use. You don't have to be an
advanced user to contribute. All you have to do is to use the content that is
already as an example.

I hope you will join in contributing to the Wiki. And, if you know of people
who might be able to contribute, please tell them about the wiki.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Best wishes,

--

- Forwarded message from Sybil & Novarro de Quadros <> -

Dear Fred & Herman:

I returned from Goa on Sept. 11th, after celebrating Dad's 100th birthday, on
Sept. 9th.

We attended a Thanksgiving Mass at 9 a.m. After which Dad thanked his friends
who were not able to join us at the reception later that evening.

The reception was held at Emerald Lawns. Dad typed his speech & my son, Conrad
had it re-typed in big block letters to make it easier for him to read. Dad
did very well in delivering it.

I thank you on behalf on my sisters, brothers & all our children.

God Bless!

Sybil

- Subject: Gorgonio Lobo - 100th Birthday September 9, 2005 -

My parents, Angelo & Libania worked in Entebbe, Uganda, where I was born in
1905. I was the eldest of their 4 sons.

Although my parents & 3 brothers have gone to their eternal reward they have
left me with many happy memories and blessings.

In 1915 my parents returned to Goa. I joined St Joseph's High School Arpora in
1915 & achieved my Matriculation in 1923.

My first job in 1929 was as Clerk, with the Ministry of Health. I was
appointed to Hospitals in Jinja, Soroti, Masindi, Entebbe, Masaka & Kampala,
rising to the rank of Medical Superintendent.

In 1963, I retired after 34 years service with the Govt. After which I joined
the Kampala City Council as a Graduated Tax Officer, until 1971.

In 1936 I married Priscilla De Souza from Calangute. Together we had 5
children. As parents we fostered in our children a love for our Faith, the
importance of education, enjoyment of music & a sense of community

The upheaval following the seizure of power by Idi Amin caused the dispersal
of my family - Arthur & Judy to Perth Australia, Sybil & Alfred to Canada.
Bertha had married and joined her husband in Switzerland.

The opportunity to go to England or Australia were forgone as the pull of my
ancestrial home "water from my own well" was strongest. My wife & I returned
to Goa. Later we spent 2-1/2 in Perth with our family & many ex-Ugandan
friends.

After my return to Goa, I was able to contribute to the community teaching
violin & the organ & supporting the Parish of St Anne.

My contributions in Uganda: President & Founding Member of the Parent Teacher
Association in Entebbe & Kampala. Member of the Advisory Board of Asian
Education, Kampala; Member of the Central Goan Council & President of the Goan
Institute, Entebbe. Member of the Asian Widows & Orphans Pension Fund,
Kampala. Member of the Uganda Defence Force (2 yrs.) in 1941.

Many have asked the secret of my longevity. It is ultimately the Blessing of
God. However the constant use of mind & body kept me going, i.e. teaching
music, keeping up to date with current affairs, managing my own finances.
Maintaining a large home demanded a daily routine of activity.

Until 2003 I rode my scooter & drove my car to Mapusa & the church & in doing
so, maintained an independent lifestyle.

The regular visits from friends & their children has renewed the bonds of
great friendship we created & fostered in Uganda.

Sadly my wife of 67 years passed away on November 22, 2003.

I look forward to be a Centenarian as I target my 100th Birthday & would like
to request all my dear friends to participate spiritually in my Thanks-
giving Prayers to Almighty God for granting me a long lease of life.

I am happy to be celebrating my Birthday on September 9, 2005 in the company
of my children and grandchildren from Geneva, Switzerland, Perth, Western
Australia & Montreal/Toronto, Canada & friends.

May God Bless you all.

[Goanet] Goanet's 11th Anniversary - August 25, 2005

2005-08-25 Thread Herman Carneiro
Dear Goanetters,

Goanet celebrates its 11th anniversary today -- August 25, 2005. On behalf of
the Goanet Admin team, I'd like to thank all our members for making this
possible.

Goanet had a humble beginning in 1994 with only 20 members. Today, Goanet is
*the* public forum of choice for Goans worldwide for addressing important
issues. I'd like to thank you, our members, for your role in making this
possible. You've posted interesting articles and shared your opinions making
Goanet an interesting and vibrant forum. Indeed, Goanet has a great wealth of
information in its archives. We hope that you will continue to do the same in
the future.

Special thanks go to all our volunteers for their role in Goanet's success:

Frederick Noronha (Goa, India)
Viviana Coelho (San Francisco, CA, USA)
Bosco D'Mello (Toronto, Canada)
Daisy Rodrigues (CA, USA)
Michelle D'Souza (Boston, MA, USA)
Christina Pinto (Australia)
Vincente Fernandes (Goa, India)

We are very lucky to have such a dedicated group of people volunteering with
us. Having worked personally with each of these volunteers I can tell you that
they spend countless hours of working on Goanet. They do not look for
recognition or thanks of any sort. They just continue to work diligently day
in and day out. In my eyes, they are nothing short of heroes in our community.

What does the future hold for Goanet?

As you know, the Goanet mailing lists have been the mainstay of Goanet. We
will continue to expand this network to reach Goans wherever they may be. We
will also continue to work towards improving the quality of the forum.

Last year saw the Goanet take a huge step forward with the launch of
http://www.goanet.org/. This year, we plan to develop the website further. We
plan to improve our news service, introduce innovative ways to share
information and to launch community building projects in Goa.

I hope to see more of you volunteer with Goanet. You don't have to be computer
savvy. You just have to be willing to devote a little time to your community.
Together we can provide a valuable public service to our community.

Congratulations to Goanet on its 11th anniversary!

Best wishes,

Goanet offers a unique venue for communication on varied issues. In a
continuing effort to ensure that this forum remains respectful, we have
established the following Rules and Guidelines.

Please note that membership to this discussion group is provided FREE of
charge. In the event any person soliciting a financial contribution for
membership to the List approaches you, please report the incident to the
List's administration at: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

RULES

* Do not use foul or abusive language.

* Do not engage in personal attacks. In other words, no name-calling.

* Spam is not tolerated on this list. Goanet treats repeated postings,
commercial posts, lengthy reposts of an earlier posting, among others, as
spam. If you're quoting an earlier post, quote the minimum.

* Do not send attachments or images with your message; text files should not
be sent as an attachment, rather, copy the text into your message.

* Use your real name as the Sender, not an alias.

* Use a meaningful Subject Line.

* Do not post messages in HTML or MIME formats, i.e. no bold, italics, colored
text, etc. Rather, format your emails in plain text only.

* If you are copying a post from a website, post a brief description of what
you would like to communicate and include the URL address.

* Do not post advertisements. Commercial postings have to be paid for if
circulated via Goanet. The Goanet Admin’s decisions on all matters are final.

* Once a particular discussion is declared "closed" by the Goanet Admin Team,
anyone continuing that discussion is likely to face action. Every effort will
be made to keep discussions democratic, free and open, but when a topic goes
on endlessly in circles or threatens to transgress decent debate, or for any
similar reasons, the Admin Team will be empowered to declare that
discussion "closed."

A violation of any of the rules will result in a reprimand. Subsequent
violations could result in suspended or terminated membership. The decision to
suspend or terminate membership will be a function of the severity and
frequency of the breaches.

GUIDELINES

* Post material which is relevant to Goan communities worldwide.

* Keep your message brief.

* Do not forward private email to the list without permission from the author.

* If you face a problem with another member, bring the complaint to Goanet
Administration at [EMAIL PROTECTED] rather than to the list.

* Use civil language and a polite tone in all your discussions.

TIPS

* Use a "smiley" to indicate a light-hearted comment, e.g. =) :-) B^)

* New members might want to observe how the list works before posting, or can
check out the archives. Click here to visit the Goanet archives.

* Pay attention to where your reply is going - do you really want the entire
list to receive your message, or would you rather limit the audience?

* Post a brief profile of yourself to the list as soon as possible after
joining.

* If you have problems with the volume of mail, shift to the Goanet-Digest.
You will receive one to three e-mails a day depending on the list’s activity.
To join Goanet-Digest contact Goanet Administration at: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

WE NEED YOUR HELP!

* Publicize the existence of Goanet's mailing lists and website.

* Volunteer your time. Goanet is a volunteer-driven organization.

these Lists - we will not include them unless they agree to be part of Goanet
or Goanet-Digest.

Re: [Goanet]Goan dances around the world

2005-06-04 Thread Herman D'Souza
Sure

I would be willing to go for this dance.

I will not dance with the most desirable woman,
however I am ready to dance with the rest of the most
desirable women at the dance.

And by the way, how do one judge a most desirable
woman???
Different men have different tastes? am I right?
Ones persons food may also be another persons poison.

[Goanet]Goanet launches new website

2005-05-01 Thread Herman Carneiro
Dear Friends of Goanet,

With the Goan community's active participation on Goanet driving the dialogue
amongst Goans in Goa and the Diaspora, it gives me great pleasure to announce
that Goanet has a new and improved website at www.goanet.org.

At the outset, our main objective was to provide our members with a user
friendly interface to access the mailing list archives. As the project
developed it took on a life of its own. The website now provides some novel
features.

WEBSITE FEATURES

1. News

You can now access the latest news from Goanet on our website.

2. Goanet Reader

This features interesting essays submitted by a variety of authors.

3. Mailing lists

This section features a user friendly way to subscribe to the Goanet mailing
lists. You can also change your membership preferences here. Also included in
this section is access to the popular Goanet archives dating back to 1999.

4. Tutorials

For those of us who have trouble posting to Goanet in plain text, we have a
simple tutorial to walk you through the process.

5. Contact Us

This section provides all our contact information.

6. Announcements

This feature provides a simple method for us to communicate information to our
website visitors.

7. Support Goanet

Goanet is a non-profit volunteer-driven organization that provides a valuable
public service. We rely on your support to provide these services. This
section provides a number of ways in which you can support Goanet.

8. Polls

We hope to ask your opinion on some sizzling topics.

9. Events Calendar

Goanet is a unique platform for communication worldwide. We hope to provide
Goans around the world with a list of events both in their countries and
abroad. Please feel free to submit events in your corner of the world.

10. Aichea Dissak Chintop (Thought for the Day)

Dominic Fernandes' thoughtful one-liners are featured in this section.

As you can see, our website is filled with interesting and useful
information. And, this is just the start. We plan to develop our website
further to provide some innovative tools. Having said this, we will not
neglect our mailing lists. We will develop our website and mailing lists to
compliment each other. We hope that our members will provide direction to us
through their continued feedback.

We'd like to thank the Goanet community for its support over the last 10
years. Goanet owes its success to you. Special thanks go to our volunteers for
their outstanding public service: Fred Noronha, Viviana Coelho, Bosco D'Mello,
and new volunteers Michelle D'Souza and Christina Pinto.

Enjoy the website!

Best wishes,

[Goanet]GOANET ADMIN: ANNOUCEMENT of INITIATIVES

2005-01-28 Thread Herman Carneiro
Dear Goanet members,

In connection with Goanet's 10th anniversary, and plans to become even more
meaningful to our readers in cyberspace, we have been working on a number of
ideas over the past few months.

Over the past few years, we have launched the Cybermatrimonials network. It
puts interested people in touch with each other, and builds links leveraging
cyberspace. This, together with the 'birthdays/anniversaries initiative', has
been well appreciated by our readership.

In the coming weeks, we will be announcing some new initiatives. But the
immediate one is the launch of Goanet News Service and a network called Goanet-
Careers. We are currently finalising the launch of the Goanet News Service,
which will bring in some special and exclusive coverage from, on and about Goa.

We are specially looking at how we can go beyond the mainstream, newspaper-
based news circuit in Goa. We see Goanet as contributing to play a positive
role in creating more space for the average Goan (and friend of Goa) to
express themselves.

We also look forward to bringing out more content that would be relevant to
Goanetters of diverse age groups, interests and nationalities.

News has long been a vital input for Goanet. We recognise its importance in
keeping the Goan diaspora connected with Goa, in helping them understand their
roots, and in playing a more critical role in making a difference to Goa and
the lives of the people of the region, wherever they may be currently living.
We are in the process of revamping our news setup, and should have better
options shortly in place. You can expect to see the impact of the changes
within the next fortnight.

In the meantime, we would like to thank Joel D'Souza (GoaCom) and wish him
well, for the news-summaries he has been offering our readers. Joel has
followed the footsteps of Vishwas Chavan and Frederick Noronha, and has been
one who has sent out daily news to the members of Goanet. Joel moves on to
pursue other endeavours. His last news clippings will be posted at the end of
January. We appreciate his contribution!

Goanet-Careers is oriented towards career-related issues for our readers. More
information will follow.

How you can help Goanet:

 * Be a volunteer to report news happenings in your Goan community.
 * Be a volunteer to draw Goanet's attention to breaking news in cyberspace.
 * Opt to volunteer as a 'Goanet Overseas Ambassador', a 'GOA' island wherever
you're located, building links between Goanet and the wider community of Goans
and people interested in Goa.
 * Give feedback and suggestions regarding Goanet and its content.
 * Forward copies of news and postings to non-Goanetters (family and friends),
and suggest that they sign-up if they'd benefit from this service.

It is important to us that you give us feedback during this process so that we
can tailor our services to provide you with the information you want and to do
it efficiently and effectively. Your feedback matters!

Thank you Goanetters for your support in the past decade as we continue to
undertake our innovative journey in unchartered cyberwaters.

Yours sincerely,

Herman Carneiro

[Goanet]RIBANDAR thread

2005-01-15 Thread Herman Carneiro
Dear Aires and members,

I think it's clear that most of our members are tired of hearing about the
Ribandar case over and over, especially when there have not been any
significant developments. With that in mind, we're going to partially
close the discussion. If a post is made about a significant development in
the case we'll approve it. But, we'll only do it if there is a SIGNIFICANT
development.

Those of you who are interested in the case and would like updates, I
suggest that you contact Aires directly.

If you have any questions, comments or concerns, please feel free to
contact the Goanet Admin (copied above).

Sincerely yours,

*** It's not fair to say that your posts "mysteriously disappear" as if we
discard them underhandedly. We have nothing to gain by doing that. If an email
is rejected from the forum an email automatically sent to you automatically by
the mailing list program. We add comments informing you why it was rejected.

If this is indeed happening, please send us an email and we'll look into it.

*** We, too, thought that the debate was being carried out in a civilized
manner, which is why we let it go on as long as it did. However, we demand a
certain etiquette in participating in debates because we need to be
considerate to all our members. Sending 10 posts in an hour arguing every
minute point is unacceptable. You and I might find the email load acceptable,
but many of our members who do not have good internet connections do not. They
simply unsubscribe depriving themselves of this and other discussions. I don't
think that is fair.

We repeatedly asked the participant involved to argue in a more concise
manner, which he did not do.

Furthermore, not all the members on the list were welcomed the debate. One
well-regarded member asked "Is this Goanet or Iraq-Net?"

We, therefore, decided to put and end to the debate.

Quoting Tim de Mello <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>:

*** We have a difficult task of moderating posts. The decisions we make will
never please everyone. But, all of you know full well that we do have debates
that are of general interest but not related to Goa. One has only to browse
the archives to be convinced.

I think it's important for members to send us some feedback so that we can
accommodate suggestions to improve the forum. Perhaps it's better to send us a
discrete email rather than to single out people publicly.

Thank you for your appreciation Mr. Fausto, I am
basically not in india, but presently in the Gulf.

I think one of the easiest and best ways to spread
konkani is linking it to all the goan websites.

however i would luv to assist in anyway I can.

instead of criticizing them we should encourage them

As i had said in my previous mail that there are three
type of goans living in bombay

one who loves to proudly speak write and read konkani
one who are ashamed to talk konkani in public
and one who has never come in contact with konkani

we should be proud of our language and no doubt we
have to speak english at business but whenever
opportunity permits we should openly speak konkani.

Hi

reference to this mail I can comment that there are
three types of Goan people who are residing in bombay

The first type are the ones who love to speak, read
and write konkani and they are very proud doing this

The second type are the ones who know konkani and as
eddie said shy to talk it openly in public, as they
prefer talking in english (as sometimes i have a
feeling they think that their value goes down when
they speak konkani openly)

and the third type of goans are the ones although they
have been born to goan parent(s), but for some reason
they have never been taught this beautiful language or
they may not be living in a environment where konkani
is being spoken.

I too am born and bred in bombay but i do love to
speak konkani openly and also all the other languages
with different type of friends and acquantances who
find it comfortable talking their language(s). but
when it comes to business terms, english of course is
the business language which has to be spoken.

my suggestion is if there are any goans interested to
learn konkani in bombay there should be konkani
courses conducted in bombay. But the question is who
will come forward to conduct these konkani language
course? and will it be fruitful?

I hope you will like and accept my view points

Dear Sir,

I will be grateful if you publish the enclosed in your issue and oblige.
With many thanks and kind regards,

Yours sincerely,

ST. XAVIER'S TOPS GOA UNIVERSITY RESULTS

Students of St. Xavier's College have done extremely well in the
University Exams and secured First Rank for TYBA, TYBCom and
TYBSc, 2004 exams. Indeed, it is for the first time that
students of these 3 streams have bagged first position in Goa
University results, in this College or any other college in Goa.

Ms. Yolanda Lobo and Ms. Ramona Soares obtained the first
position in TYBCom with 538 marks each out of 700. Ms. Trupti
Chodankar secured the Third rank for the same exam with 533 marks
out of 700. Last year also, two students from our College had
shared the First rank and secured Third rank too.

Ms. Yolanda Lobo is the daughter of Mr. Francisco Lobo and Ms.
Patty Lobo from Calangute. She is a distinction student
throughout her academic career. She has participated in several
contests and her performance has been always extremely good. She
is going to pursue a career in Management at Goa Institute of
Management Studies for which she has already been selected. She
wants to specialise in Finance.

Ms. Ramona Soares is a very popular sportswoman and has
represented the College in many sports disciplines. She is the
daughter of Mr. Roque Soares and Ms. Elsa Soares from Caranzalem.
She takes active part in cricket, table tennis, basketball and
handball. She intends to become a Company Secretary.

Yolanda and Ramona represented the College at the South Indian
Level Business Contest ACME 2003 held in Mangalore and were
exposed to what is happening elsewhere in India.

Ms. Trupti Chodankar is very hard working student and hails from
Colvale and is the daughter of Mr. Dinanath Chodankar and Ms.
Pushpavati Chodankar. Her hobbies include reading, gardening and
tailoring and she aspires to be Company Secretary.

Ms. Natasha Braganca secured First Rank for TYBA obtaining 557
marks out of 700. Her specialisation papers were Economics and
Psychology. She is the grand daughter of the famous poet
Nascimento Mendonca. She is the daughter of Mr. Roy Braganza and
Ms. Halina Braganca and hails from Mapusa. She was born in
Berlin and has just proceeded to Dubai where she received the
news of her excellent performance with great joy. She plays the
keyboards with a rare perfection and is the member of the family
singing group.

Ms. Faminda D'Souza had the privilege of securing First Rank with
618 marks out of 700 at the TYBSc examination with specialisation
in Computer Science. Her performance has been constant at
Distinction level throughout her academic career just like
Natasha. She is the daughter of Mr. Francisco D'Souza and Ms.
Eudes D'Souza from Calangute. She is proactive and was crowned
as MISS XAVIER for the year 2003-2004.

This is an extraordinary event where there has been a
convergence of ranks at St. Xavier's. All these 5 students
attribute their success to hard work, God's grace, parents'
guidance and teachers' support. They vouch for the role the
College has played in terms of creating a conducive environment
for their all round development.

Book Release in Delhi

Goa: A Daughter’s Story by Maria Couto

‘We have our language, our State. We have to recover our soul.’ – Maria
Couto

It seemed like the Kala Academy, Miramar, for the sprinkling of Goans gathered
at the India International Centre, New Delhi on 22 April 2004, for a discussion
to mark the publication of Maria Couto’s book Goa: A Daughter’s Story.  At the
end of 2 hours of forays into aspects of Goanness by the panelists, it was more
easily possible to see the Goan as a product of ones unique historical
circumstances, quite apart from the Indian mainland. After all, wasn’t it
Panditji who said ‘Goa ke log ajeeb heh.’ ?

Taking off from stereotypes of Goa – rave parties, skirts at the Republic Day
parades, and beaches -- the speakers meandered from the genesis and inspiration
for the book (Couto), why the BJP is in power in Goa (Rajdeep Sardessai), the
popular notion of what Goan Christians are like (Shobhana Bhattacharjee) and
the Common law code vs the civil law code in Goa (Fali Nariman).  Dilip
Padgaonkar who chaired, provided nuggets like what Bakibab Borkar said should
be done after he died -‘Throw my body into the sea. For all my life I have
eaten fish. Now let them eat me.’

Couto’s canvas is large i.e. from 1510, when Afonso de Albuquerque conquered
Goa to the present. She dwelt on the shaping influences on her by Bakibab
Borkar and Pissurelekar in the 60’s and the latter’s haunting words ‘Amchem
kanni boroi.’ (Write our story).  Goa: A Daughter’s Story is about the author
finding her own voice apart from, as she puts it ‘my husband’s wife and my
father’s daughter.’ Knitting her memoirs across Bihar, Delhi and Dharwar, Couto
understandably finds her peace in Aldona, where she finds the quintessence of
the Goan personality i.e. where Goans live in harmony, united by shared
traditions and a common language. She has also dealt sensitively with the issue
of conversions. ‘It is only when we comprehend our past, can we go beyond it.’
As Rajdeep eloquently observed, written at a time when secularists feel there
is no hope the book tells us that in its microcosm ‘Goa provides the perfect
example why the idea of India will endure.’ And it is not for this reason alone
that Nehru’s Discovery of India needs to be read, remarked Fali.

Rajdeepalso mentioned other stereotypes associated with Goa like ‘fish, feni
and football,’ what Goan catholics used to be called in Bombay, i.e. ‘maka
paus’ and ‘put through’ after what they used to say while asking their mates to
pass the ball to them while playing football. The BJP is in Goa more because of
the moral bankruptcy of the Congress and the erosion of MGP’s ideology than
anything else, he said. Shobhana said we need to move away from the stereotype
of the (Bombay) Goan-Catholic girl who says – ‘Hum God se ek wish maangta
heh.’  A scratch poll which Rajdeep conducted revealed that 8 out of 10 thought
Christianity was the dominant religion in Goa. (Christians only comprise 23-
30%). This too is a stereotype because of the myth-making and promotion Goa is
subject too. Rajdeep was even asked how he could be a Goan since his name was
neither Gonsalves nor D’Souza!  Fali praised Couto for her lucid style and for
retaining the ‘dignity of history’ a phrase by Thucydides. He quoted
Rajgopalachari censure of the ‘liberation’ action in 1962 and Will Durant’s
rhetorical questioning of the decline of Portugal after Magellan.  Discover the
river, Couto advises, in Goa. It is in its eddies we discover our true selves.

                                        -Dr Brian Mendonca

My dear Friend,

At the risk of boring our readers, I feel compelled to return to this forum on
the above subject. The only reason, again, is to safeguard the truth.
Incidentally, safeguarding the truth was the only motive of my initial response
to your Report on the Installation of the new Archbishop of Goa. I had no
reasons to antagonize you, although I admit that the only COMMENT I made
(about your use of the non-existing word "penital") might have been uncalled

factually wrong reporting, with some extra pieces of information thrown in . as
a bonus.

For brevity sake, I will tackle only three points dealt with by you in
your "Clarification by Gonsalves," dated 3rd instant. And, this time, please
forgive my language!

1. Godfrey: "Much of what has been clarified in this report by Fr Pereira
ought to have come out by way of proper arrangements viz; a running commentary
or a detailed programme circulated before hand to all not as a post mortem
report." . "There was no commentator ---to narrate either in Konkani or
English ---the sequence of events .. Many did not know what was happening The
brief itenary (sic) was in short supply"

REPLY: First part: A Commentator (Fr. Simon Fernandes) was permanently posted
at a mike stand and he gave an excellent commentary of the whole Liturgy,
specifying WHO was doing WHAT at different points of time. I see now that Fr.
Simon's only fault was that he spoke in Konkani, a language that perhaps Mr.
Gonsalves does not understand. In any case, no reporter would have stated
that "there was no commentator ---to narrate either in Konkani or English ---
the sequence of events" - unless he/she was stone deaf! Second part: A
detailed programme was handed over to all the journalists/media persons who
took care in contacting our Diocesan Communications Centre (Fr. Olavo) well in
advance, and not just before the ceremony, as Gonsalves seems to have done. In
fact, the Centre held a press conference three days before the event. That is
how all the local newspapers that morning (even before the celebration had
begun) specified that the Nuncio (and not Abp. Raul Gonsalves) would lead the
new Archbishop to his chair and that Fr. Jose Remedios Fernandes (and not Fr.
Rodrigues) would read the Papal Bull. If Godfrey had only read the papers that
morning!

2. Godfrey: "One could not decipher whether "presence" near the only celebrant
is different from being main celebrants."

REPLY: The "concelebrated sung High Mass" took place at an altar placed a few
feet away from the vantage point where Mr. Gonsalves says he was posted, behind
the Chief Minister. (By the way, that was not the place allotted to the media
persons!). And the Nuncio was at his seat far behind, near the old altar table.
The Nuncio, therefore, was nowhere "near the only celebrant." Besides, since
the Mass was in Konkani, rendered in the clear and unmistakable voice of the
new Archbishop, even a blind man would not have thought, much less reported,
that the Nuncio - a Spaniard -- was the main celebrant!

3. Godfrey: "Tabernacles as a rule are always at the centre == correct me if I
am wrong -- that this one was on the left is news to me - I have never been on
a guided tour of the Se Cathedral."

REPLY: In a confusing third paragraph of his report, Godfrey states that the
dignitaries were led "to the Blessed Sacrament Chapel." The statement is true.
But, if this was a real eyewitness report, Gonsalves must have seen that the
Tabernacle in the Cathedral is not 'at the centre,' but on the left side of the
nave. (More than once, the thought crossed my mind that Godfrey could have
prepared his Report from the comfort of an easy chair in his living room, while
following a live telecast of the ceremony or with the help of a
brief "itenary," whatever he means by that!)

COMMENTS:

1. It is interesting to note that, in his initial report, dated March 23,
Gonsalves lavishes kudos on Fr. Olavo Velho Pereira when he writes: "Fr. Olav
Velho Pereira (and others) deserve full praise for their flawless organisation
of the three hour function." The same "Fr. Olav" becomes now an easy
scapegoat for Godfrey's sins of omission! Incidentally, I have mailed to Fr.
Olavo a copy of Gonsalves' last posting on the Installation. And I have
arranged that my present posting goes just ahead of the reply Fr. Olavo intends
to send to Goanet, for our readers' easy cross-reference.

2. The seven points I chose to correct in my earlier posting of March 26 are
only 50% of the f

It is nice to see that the little boy who died beneat the Margao garbage truck
has not yet been forgotten in the din of IFFI. It is gratifying to see at least
one newspaper front page the images of the poignant 'Memorial' march through
Panaji . On 30 April it will be a month since he needlessly lost his life. In
the meanwhile, to the street children, 'Apna Ghar' continue to be two four-
letter words. Can we change life for them?

[Goanet]SPORT: India claim historic win (Cricket)

2004-04-16 Thread Herman Carneiro
Third Test, Rawalpindi, day four:
Pakistan 224 & 245 lost to India 600 by an innings and 131 runs

India secured a historic first series win in Pakistan after strolling to
victory by an innings and 131 runs in the third Test in Rawalpindi.

Anil Kumble cleaned up the tail to return 4-47 as the hosts were
dismissed for 245 soon after lunch.

Asim Kamal struck a brave 60 not out despite batting with an injured
elbow.

The verdict sees Sourav Ganguly move ahead of Mohammad Azharuddin as
India's most successful Test captain with 15 victories.

It also capped India's first series win away from home since they
defeated Sri Lanka 1-0 in a three-Test series in 1993.

The hosts, 49-2 overnight, put on 148 for the loss of five wickets in an
eventful first session, with Lakshmipathy Balaji striking twice to
return 3-108.

They slumped to 95-4 before Kamal, who took a pain-killing injection at
the crease to treat an injured elbow, put on 81 for the sixth wicket
with Yousuf Youhana, who made 48.

Enough action was crammed into the first hour of play to befit a full
day's play, with three wickets, six dropped catches and an array of
curious strokeplay all potential highlights material.

The fireworks started in the first over, with nightwatchman Kamran Akmal
hitting Balaji for three boundaries and still finding time to be given a
life by a snoozing first and second slip.

The normally ultra-reliable Yuvraj Singh then dropped the easiest chance
he will ever get at forward short-leg, but Kamal ran out of lives in the
third over when Balaji uprooted his off-stump.

Pakistan's predicament required some prudence, but Yasir Hameed was
having none of it, offering two chances - to Sachin Tendulkar and Anil
Kumble - which India politely spilled.

Ironically, it required a catch of true quality to remove him, keeper
Parthiv Patel taking a one-handed gem down the leg-side in Ashish
Nehra's one-over first spell.

Skipper Inzamam-ul-Haq, who pledged to lead Pakistan out of the mire
after play on the third day, was given an early life by Rahul Dravid in
first slip off the luckless Balaji.

But he soon went - reducing the hosts to a parlous 94-5 - faintly edging
Balaji to Patel and walking, despite umpire Rudi Koertzen looking
motionless before offering a raised finger.

Pakistan looked set for a quick death with two new batsmen at the
crease, but Youhana and Kamal showed some welcome fight.

The sixth-wicket pair traded largely in boundaries, taking the score
along to 175 and offering the home crowd some hope.

That hope disappeared with the dismissal of Youhana, caught and bowled
by Kumble.

The leg-spinner found himself on a hat-trick in his next over after
having Mohammad Sami caught by Dravid for a first-ball duck.

Shoaib Akhtar swung hard at the ball for a streaky boundary down to
third-man, and kept swinging to take 18 runs off the over before
Pakistan lunched on 197-7.

The end soon came after the break, with Shoaib and Fazl-e-Akbar falling
to Kumble to take the leg-spinner's career haul to 397 wickets.

Indian players were sent into rapturous celebrations when Tendulkar's
removal of Danish Kaneria, caught by Ganguly, ended the match.

Pakistan: Inzamam-ul-Haq (captain), Imran Farhat, Taufeeq Umar, Yasir
Hameed, Yousuf Youhana, Asim Kamal, Kamran Akmal, Mohammad Sami, Shoaib
Akhtar, Danish Kaneria, Fazl-e-Akbar.

India: Sourav Ganguly (captain), Virender Sehwag, Rahul Dravid, Sachin
Tendulkar, VVS Laxman, Yuvraj Singh, Parthiv Patel, Irfan Pathan,
Lakshmipathy Balaji, Anil Kumble, Ashish Nehra.

Umpires: David Shepherd (ENG), Rudi Koertzen (RSA)

[Goanet]Fwd: Caju Feni by Salus Correia

2004-04-14 Thread Herman

From: Salus Correia <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
 Subject: Caju Feni
  To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Hello Joseph,

I have read your article about caju feni with interest! Well I do feel sorry
for you and your precious liver which bore the brunt of your search for good
caju feni!

I left Goa in 1999, and for some years before that was professionally in the
purchasing line. While working for a company that manufactured after shave
lotions and colognes in Goa, it was my job to procure large amounts of
rectified spirit for our products. At that time, the sale of rectified spirit
was controlled by the government, and we were issued permits which were dished
out as favours, at the discretion of the concerned minister for industries, who
used to convene meetings of all bulk alcohol consumers to discuss forecasts
etc.

The first time I attended one such meeting, I was shocked to find that I was
surrounded by the liquor barons! And I managed to have a chat with Mr
Shirodkar, from Agencia Real that day. I enquired as to why he and the other
barons wanted so much of rectified spirit. His reply to me still rings in my
ears: Baba re, feniac re. Portuguese tempar dongrar cazu asleat ani te
zaddamchem cuidad ghetale dongorkar. Atamchem tempar, mele te dongorkarachem
ani tanche bhurge. Dongor padd assa, punn feni piupe dha vantenim chodlea!

And he went on to tell me how they manage to procure small quantities of
genuine caju feni from their sources, and how they used that small quantity as
the essence with rectified spirit. And he also told me how some unscrupulous
manufacturers made caju feni which was 100 per cent rectified spirit, with caju
essence manufactured by some Bombay chemical essence companies! Apparently
that is the cheap feni that seems to flow in the bars in Goa today. So it
should not be a surprise if you find feni substandard etc. Good feni is good,
and does not give you the side effects that you mentioned.

Fortunately, there are still some good sources of caju feni in Goa. I like the
feni distilled by the priests at the SVD monastery at Raia, and also from the
Salesian farm at Sulcurna. Maybe you could try this stuff, and see the
difference for yourself. These priests use some modern techniques for crushing
the fruit and also for distillation. And that does make a lot of a difference,
considering hygienic conditions etc...

Enjoy your feni!!!
Regards,
Salus Correia

Re: [Goanet]Christianity's Similarities with Islam

2003-11-06 Thread Herman D'Souza
Hello Tariq

I am a bit surprised how do you believe in Jesus
Christ being yourself a muslim.. or am i wrong??? as i
understand islam honours mohammed as the last prophet
and jesus as one of the prophets. am i correct.
please shed some light on this. reason is i myself
being a roman catholic, i know many similiarities
between islam, christianity and judaism, which are all
connected religions. I respect all religions as they
all believe in God, including hinduism, sikhism, etc.
and they all teach good values of humanity. please
clarify

[Goanet]Goanet's 9th Birthday

2003-08-26 Thread Herman Carneiro
Today marks the Goanet’s nineth birthday. Launched on August 25th, 1994,
Goanet was the first mailing list for Goans worldwide. I’d like to take
this opportunity to thank all of you who have helped make Goanet a success.

I cannot possibly name everyone who has been instrumental in its success.
We've had various organizations host us and given us a platform to grow
such as Northeastern University and GOACOM. We have various people
contribute to discussions at various times. They’ve made the list
interesting and lively. We also have silent members who show their support
by just being subscribed to the list and help us when called upon. They
play an important role too for we cannot have everyone posting to the
list. Many thanks for all of you for your role in Goanet's success.

There is a group, however, which I would like to send special thanks to –
the Goanet admin team. Here’s to our present volunteers Vivian Coelho,
Fred Noronha, Bosco D'Mello abd Vincente Fernandes, who work hard behind
the scenes to ensure our lists run smoothly. Thank you for all your hard
work! And, thank you too to all the volunteers who have previously helped
us.

In the future I’d like to see the Goanet community become more involved
with Goan communities worldwide. Goanet is a unique tool through which we
can work together to help each other. I’d also like to see more people to
participate in discussions and become more active in our community.
Together we can make this list vibrant and more attractive.

Goanet’s birthday is something for us all to celebrate. I’d like to invite
you to share your Goanet experience with us, whether you are an old-timer
or a new comer.

Viva Goanet!!!

Best wishes,

- Herman

[Goanet] [Fwd: The Americans are our best friends]

2003-03-30 Thread Herman Carneiro

 Original Message
Subject: The Americans are our best friends
From: Mervyn Lobo <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Date: Fri, March 28, 2003 6:38 pm
To: Tanzanet org <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

Mar. 28, 2003.
The Toronto Star
Coming to aid of 'family' a myth
The idea that the U.S. would rush to save us is
touching. The reality is less comforting, says
historian James Laxer
-

When U.S. ambassador Paul Cellucci said that his
country was disappointed because Canada was not at
America's side in the Iraq war, he claimed that if
Canada faced a security threat "there would be no
debate. There would be no hesitation. We would be
there for Canada."

That's the way things ought to be when you're dealing
with "family," the ambassador told a Toronto business
audience.

The idea that the United States would rush to our side
is touching.

The only problem is that there has not been a single
case to which anyone can point when the U.S. has come
to our side to meet a security threat to Canada since
the Thirteen Colonies declared their independence in
1776.

The two countries have been allies in previous
conflicts when Washington and Ottawa decided that
their interests were parallel. In the two world wars,
the Americans sat out the first couple of years of the
conflicts while Canada was at war.

Indeed, during World War I while it was still neutral,
the United States continued to export Canadian nickel
to Germany.

As an Ontario Royal Commission later reported, some of
that nickel went into the production of munitions that
were used against Canadian soldiers in the trenches.

Early in World War II, when Canada dispatched an RCMP
vessel to Greenland to ensure that the island not be
taken over by the Nazis, the Americans, perhaps
fearing the rise of a Canadian empire, issued a stiff
official complaint to Ottawa.

Later, in the war, the U.S. occupied Greenland.

By no stretch of the imagination could anyone claim
that the United States entered any of its many foreign
conflicts over the past two centuries out of concern
for the security interests of Canada.

The truth is the U.S. has relentlessly stood up for
its own interests in a long list of security conflicts
with Canada.

Several acute boundary disputes between the two
countries — on the East Coast, the West Coast, and
over the Alaska boundary — came close to generating
military conflict between Canada and the U.S.

At the end of the American Civil War, the U.S.
secretary of state suggested that Americans would get
over their hard feelings toward the British for
selling naval vessels to the Confederacy if Britain
would hand over Canada to the United States.

Indeed, there remains a very potent territorial
dispute between the United States and Canada over the
question of Arctic waters.

While Canada claims the waters of the High Arctic as
Canadian territory, the U.S. rejects that claim,
insisting the Northwest Passage is an international
waterway. Twice the U.S. has sent warships through
that passage, without seeking the permission of
Ottawa, to keep its claim alive.

In his speech to the Economic Club of Toronto,
Cellucci said "we'll have to wait and see if there are
any ramifications" as a result of the current
squabble. Analysts and right-wing Canadian politicians
who have warned darkly of the economic consequences
that could flow from offending our largest trading
partner, apparently have not given much thought to the
nature of Canadian exports to the U.S.

The overwhelming bulk of our exports to the U.S. are
autos and auto parts, pulp and paper, nickel, oil and
natural gas, and other primary products — most of this
shipped south by U.S.-owned corporations.

To punish Canada, Washington would have to shoot
itself, or more exactly, General Motors, in the foot.

In the few acute trade disputes Canada has with the
U.S., it seems not to make much difference how Canada
behaves.

Sending Canadian troops to serve under a U.S.
commander in Afghanistan did nothing to win Washington
over to Canada's position on softwood lumber.

The Chrétien government decided that it was not in the
interest of Canada to participate in an arguably
illegal assault on a small country that poses no
direct threat to the United States.

For a middle size country like ours, multilateralism
and respect for international law are essential to our
survival as a sovereign country. The government of
Canada was acting in our national interest.

Cellucci was not wrong when he suggested that the U.S.
and Canada are like members of a family, although a
rather dysfunctional one. The older sibling left home
early, while the younger sibling stayed home hoping
that mom would help fend off assaults from big
brother.

In practice, living next door to a superpower means
that the superpower can be counted on to defend you
against everyone except itself.

Over the last 100 days (from December 9 2002 till March 19, 2003), I
have been taking note of suicides in Goa, as reported in the daily news
extracts we get from Joel D'Souza.

The following figures appear:

In these 100 days, there have been 27 suicides (just over one every 4
days) -- 17 were males and 10 females.
The average age of male suicides is 33.64 and of female suicides 28.8.
The overall average age is 31.85.
The youngest make suicide was 18 and the oldest 56, while the youngest
female suicide was 16 and the oldest 53.

I am not a sociologist, neither a psychologist. But I find these figures
disturbing.

Can goanet-admin consider unsetting the reply-to field in messages posted to
goanet? This is a tricky field, which can catch someone by surprise. The
user thinks s/he's replying only to sender, but the reply is sent to the
whole group because of the presence of this field in the message header. I
have seen people post embarassing stuff, including personal details, because
they thought they were replying only to sender, who they perhaps knew
personally, but the message went to a whole group. Consider for example
(which does not contain embarassing personal details, but I think was
perhaps meant as a reply only to sender):

e. Use civil language and a polite tone in all your discussions.

TIPS

i. Use a "smiley" to indicate a lighthearted comment, e.g. =) :-) B^)

ii. New members might want to observe how the list works before posting,
or can check out the archives at:

http://www.goanet.org/pipermail/goanet/
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Goanet2003/
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Goa-net/

iii. Pay attention to where your reply is going - do you really want the
entire list to receive your message, or would you rather limit the
audience?

iv. Post a brief profile of yourself to the list as soon as possible after
joining.

v. If you have problems with the volume of mail, shift to the
Goanet-Digest. You will receive one to three e-mails a day depending on
the list’s activity. To join Goanet-Digest contact Goanet Administration
at: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

WE NEED YOUR HELP!

1. Publicize the existence of the Lists.

2. Volunteer your time. Goanet is a volunteer-driven organization.

3. Encourage the newer and silent members to post to these Lists.

4. Send us the email addresses of people who might be interested in
joining these Lists - we will not include them unless they agree to be
part of Goanet or Goanet-Digest.

5. GIVE US YOUR FEEDBACK - we appreciate all comments, complaints and
bouquets. You can reach us at: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Many thanks to our volunteers for all their hard work:

To,
Goanet Administration.
I sincerely apologize for my CROSS-POSTING to 'Goanet' from 'GoanCauses'
(Unsubscribe from GoanCauses List) which has created a misunderstanding and
an unnecessary reaction from the members of the
GOANET. I regret the inconvenience caused.

This Goanet sucks. Don't worry Floriano, I too was unsubscribed, but the
jackasses still send me their drivel.

I was stunned to see that Mr. Floriano Lobo has been unsubscribed by
your coordinator for being, of all things, "Anti-Goan and Pro-Indian" !!
Anyone who has read any of Floriano's articles in Newspapers and Goanet,
would know that he is one of the great Champions of the Goan cause, showing
up the Government in a number of their betrayals and failed promises to the
Goan people. Also I see nothing wrong in being "Pro-Indian" just as long
as they are not Anti-Goan. India after all is our own, our native land.
Surely there's a misunderstanding somewhere that needs to be cleared?

Hello,

I would like to migrate but am not able to obtain the required
points. I have two brothers abroad, one in the States and one in
Australia. My mother was born in Panjim. I would be making a trip to Goa
this week.Could you let me know how I should go about getting the spade
work done for obtaining my mother's birth certificate and routing my
immigration through a portuguese passport so that it would be easier for
me to migrate.

I would be grateful for a response from you.
Regards
Maria

Dear Sir,

Greetings from Moira ! Please put this on to your
mailing list of " Goa Net" if you find it useful.

Thank you in anticipation.

Kind regards,
Fr.Prakash OP

***
BASIC COURSE IN NATUROPATHY
Conducted by
Fr. M. Britto Joseph S.J.

This is a two-day workshop focussing on the philosophy
and principles of Nature Cure. Nature can heal us and
enable us to maximise our health, if we allow her to do
so. To do this, we need to understand the principles of
Nature, for it is in these principles that the keys to
our cures are found.

The workshop brings a practical awareness of Man's
relationship with all the other elements in the living
environment, and the interplay between these elements.
What happens when there is an imbalance among the
elements, and how balance can be regained, which brings
health.

Simple natural remedies that can cure or alleviate
physical suffering are surprisingly to be found in the
home itself, in humble herbs and spices usually not
thought of. When incorporated into the everyday diet,
these articles of food can go a long way in supporting
other nature-consonant treatments to cure a variety of
ailments.

How to handle small everyday health problems that crop
up, without having to rush to doctors or pop chemical
pills with harmful side-effects? This is a question
which young parents are often faced with, as well as
people who have a high susceptibility to ailments, and
seem to pass from one ailment to another.

How can major ailments be avoided, and so unnecessary
hospital and medical bills be reduced in the long run?
You will be surprised to learn how many simple natural
alternatives there are, which when incorporated in your
lifestyle, will maintain your state of health, improve
it and bring you hope.

By following natural principles as a way of life, all
these things are possible, as well as that most
precious result of health continuing joy!

"The Glory of God is Man Fully Alive"

For the first time in MOIRA, FR. BRITTO'S BASIC COURSE
ON NATUROPATHY will be held at the
Dominican Training Center, (DTC);
Near St. Xavier's High School,
