Kind Regards, GL Alfred de Tavares Novena to St. Francis Xavier - The Novena of Grace This novena prayer, although short is sufficient. It would be better of course to add, if time permits, three Hail Marys or say five times the Our Father, Haily Mary and Glory be to the Father, or to use some of the many well-loved novena prayers from other sources. Remember that prayers must be said with the lips in order to gain the indulgences. This novena begins on November 24 and ends on December 3.

## # If Goanet stops reaching you, contact [EMAIL PROTECTED] # # Want to check the archives? http://www.goanet.org/pipermail/goanet/# # Please keep your discussion/tone polite, to reflect respect to others # ## I think those who have started this chain letter on the Exposition of the Body of St. Francis Xavier didn't give themselves a second thought on attaching the photos. With all reverence to the saint, I think the Goa church is making a big mistake in holding this Exposition. On my last visit to Goa in March, I discussed this issue with two priests who seemed not very happy at this event. In fact, they indirectly suggested that the media should launch a campaign to halt it. I think they are right. More than anything else, the Exposition has been turned into a commercial venture the past few times. I remember many, many years ago discussing this issue with the late Fr. Antonio Pereira and even before that Fr. George who is in charge of the Bom Jesus Basilica. I had gone to the church to pray and I saw the saint's body from a distance. That was enough for me. Now the photos have sort of disturbed me. I was thinking of going to Goa for the Exposition but now I think I would be happy praying from where I am. I have attened the Exposition when I was very young. Maybe that is enough. I am told that the hotel lobby in collusion with the government want to make a quick buck on the pilgrims, or some who combine piligrimage with tourism. This defeats the purpose of the Exposition. It's more than a decade ago that I heard that the last Exposition would be the final. I don't saying it was final was a marketing ploy. If it was, St. Francis should forgive those who joined hands to have the Exposition. I may sound ridiculous, but the saint must forgive the Goa Church and, by extension, the Pope. I pray please do NOT further circulate this photos, especially because young children may see them and may not like what they see. I don't know best to express myself, more so as I am written immediately after seeing the photos. Forgive me Saint Xavier for I have spoken from my heart. Eugene Correia __ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! But it's also true that he asked Rome to implement it here. (This is history. How we interprete it today also has a lot to do with our own assumptions.) Yes, religious intolerance flowed from the guns of the Portuguese rulers. But it's also true that they did it using religion as a justification, with the tacit or implied support of the religious authorities of that time. Being defensive about the embarassing aspects of the past isn't going to help us come to grips with our history. Neither is a policy of suggesting that your-religion-is-more-flawed-than-mine. Let's call a spade a spade, accept that even great names have a positive and negative side to themselves, and ... move on. [Goanet]RE: St. Francis Xavier
St. Francis Xavier (SFX) The discussion on SFX on GoaNet is a good topic for our knowledge of history. And for Goans to know their past and culture. Hence I thank Dr. Jose Colaco for posting his response on Goan cyberspace because this is a great education tool for all (3000) Goans to learn and for some to dialogue in greater detail. Unfortunately any discussion on important historical facts to those with a close mind or those that choose not to advance their knowledge, will be throwing pearls to the swine and that should not deter the intelligent conversation. Hence JC's presentation of comparative religious historical practices is a good point for us to keep things in perspective for that period of time. Fortunately the Catholic Church has moved beyond the inquisition (about 300 years ago) and has learnt form that episode. I hope other religions can learn from the experience of the Catholic Church and apply some of those approaches to end their own poor performances rather than continuing some of them to the present day. I agree with Filomena about the need to be sure of the true historical facts rather than repeating the same old stereotypical stories. Not many Goans / Indians know that the inquisition was brought from Europe to Goa nine years after SFX died. And about seven years before SFX died, he left Goa for the far east- Spice Islands, Japan and then making plans to go to China. So SFX was only actively involved in India for the (first) three short years. This time was spent along the whole coast from Bassein (north of Mumbai / Bombay) to the southern tip of Kerala and then going to Madras/ Chennai. SFX's extra-special link to Goa was only because the Portuguese hierarchy brought his body after his death to the capital of the Portuguese empire and the seat of their religious activity - Archbishop for the whole of Asia and Africa - the Rome of the east. In Europe, the Inquisition was introduced by the political / religious hierarchy to control the religious waywardness of the Catholic population. SFX was very disturbed / angry about the un-Christian behavior of the Portuguese towards the natives in Goa. This is obvious from the several letters he wrote the then Portuguese King Joan. I have not seen any evidence of him wanting to bring the inquisition into Goa. But I have seen evidence of him wanting to bring into Goa stricter discipline for the Portuguese Catholics and perhaps the native Catholics to assure they practice 'the pure/conservative Catholic faith' as was traditionally done in Europe. As far as destruction of the Hindu temples and Moslem mosques! Was this done by the Catholic Church or was that done by conquering/colonizing authority (any colonizing authority be it Hindu, Muslim, Portuguese etc. etc.) to advance their own military-political-religious hold on the land and the conquered people? In this respects, Goan web sites that present the author's views or bias as historical facts and confuse and mix the Catholic Church with the Portuguese government actions do a disservice to Goa and Goans. In fact due to the Padrado (legal) arrangements of 1493 between the Pope and the Portuguese king, the Pope had little control even on the Catholic Church in the Portuguese colonies.
