[Goanet] Re: ABBE FARIA
A very good article, Marcos. Permit me, however, to point out the following: 1. Blessed Joseph Vaz was not born in Sancoale (his father's place) but at the ancestral house of his mother in Benaulim. Eight days later he was baptized in the St. John the Baptist Church of the latter village. Only after that he was taken to Sancoale, where he spent most of his life before joining priesthood. 2. As regards postage stamps issued in the erstwhile Estado da India: Besides those mentioned by you, there were also the following ones: In 1956, as part of a six-stamp issue, the stamps depicting (besides Padre Jose Vaz) Manuel Antonio de Sousa, Filipe Nery Xavier and Agostinho Vicente Lourenco. 3. As a matter of interest, I will also mention that in 1952 a stamp with the frontispiece of the Escola Medica de Goa signalled the organization of the 1st National Congress of Tropical Medicine and that in 1955 there was a stamp depicting the facade of the Liceu Nacional Afonso de Albuquerque (the Panjim Lyceum) to commemorate the centenary of the foundation of this institution. This is the best news on this forum in quite awhile. Action, not words. Congratulations to Dom and those who assisted him. Disappointing only 283 have signed the petition. In addition to Goan apathy, it may be the online petition process is something new to Goans? George --- [EMAIL PROTECTED] [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: A maquette of the Abbe Faria stamp/postcard has been prepared by one of the three countries petitioned to, and while official confirmation is awaited, there is encouraging reason to be optimistic that an Abbe Faria stamp will be issued on the occasion of his 250th birth anniversary (May 31, 2006). To date, 283 have signed the petition. However, the opportunity still awaits for everyone else who may wish to be on the record in this effort to get what could well be the first Goan name and face in the Philatelic galaxy. http://www.abbefaria.com/Petition.htm
[Goanet] Re: Abbe Faria Stamp
Dear George, I am in Goa at present for a wedding and very busy. I am open to judgjing the competition along with Dom. A honor. If you find someone else, that is fine too. But I will have to do it online. I will be in India till Oct 3. Then from Oct 6 - Jan 4, I will be in Japan doing a Japanese Woodblock Residency at Awajishima in Hyogo Prefecture, and later visiting museums. After that I will be back in NY for a few days before returning back to India till the end of Feb. So will write back in a few days. Let me think about designing a stamp. Its too hectice. One needs time for these things. But will certainly think about it. Someone should look at commemorative stamps and pay attention to sizes, etc. so artists understand process. Venanatius Dear Dom and Venantius: Goa Sudharop would like to help move the Abbe Faria stamp movement forward in two ways: 1. We will forward the petition to increase the number of signatures. 2. We would like to donate a first prize of $150 to the best stamp submission made through the Abbe Faria website by a child under 18 years old. We would propose the two of you be the judges, say ending the competition on Dec 31, 2005? It would help Goan children learn about Abbe Faria. This is our 'Year of the Child' and such a competition is in keeping with that theme. I know Dom has his stamp design on the website and perhaps Venantius can come up with one too? The best submission from the competition for those under 18 years, including one from each of you (three in total) can be submitted to the respective authorities in France, India, Portugal? I am sure the three countries have their own stamp designers but would surely receive stamp submissions. Perhaps other submissions on the website by those over 18 can be submitted to the authorities but would be excluded from the $150 prize. What do you think? Regards, George

For Sandeep's information, 99% of Goanet subscribers are very knowledgeable, humorous and witty. The only difference is that they all do not live in Panjim. But that qualification does not make them an authority on any subject. Hypnotism is a subject that is too vast to learn about in a 'little talk' so lets just not get into that now. And just for the record, I am sure many Goanetters will agree with my view that 'magic' IS NOTHING BUT BUNKUM!!!) D Satish is a trained and a qualified magician who has studied the subject of hypnotism vastly. He is therefore more qualified and knowledgeable to comment on this subject than many of us in this forum. During the talk I had with him, D Satish also told me how one of his students(D Satish conducts regular magic classes), in order to be convinced that hypnotism was bunkum, studied the entire course on hypnotism in the US, shelling out a few thousand dollars in the process. After completing that course, that student of his too came out convinced that there was no truth whatsoever in hypnotism. The suggestion put forth by Salus that magic is bunkum so as to strike an analogy vis-a-vis the issue at hand is nothing but ridiculous. Magic is not a science that can be tested in a laboratory. It cannot be proved or disproved by carrying out experiments. It is not a pseudo-science either. It is simply an art! Cheers Sandeep __ Yahoo! Mail for Mobile Take Yahoo! Mail with you! The very fact that he said that it is by suggestion means that not all people can be hypnotised. Using this viewpoint, I suppose good salesmen are hynotists indirectly, as they can suggest a potential client to buy a certain product even if they came to the shop with no intention of buying. May 31, 2006 will mark the 250th birth anniversary of Abbe Faria. Perhaps, incorporated in this Years World Goa Day should be the initiative to urge the Indian Postal authorities into issuing a stamp to mark the historical event and the singular significance of this illustrious Goan. Dom Martin Could it also be possible to ask the Postal Authorities to improve the quality of Indian Postal stamps? Stamps are like ambassadors of our country, and the extremely poor quality of most of our stamps (excluding special ones available only at the Panjim Head PO) are a poor reflection on our country. sonia

One of the aspects about Abbe Faria, told to me as a student of Don Bosco, Panaji by my teachers was that Abbe Faria disputed the theory put forward by Mesmer. Mesmer claimed that during hypnotism, it was the power from the hypnotist which flowed onto the person, leading the person into a hypnotic trance. Abbe Faria however said that the person was hypnotised through his own power. I am not sure whether Fr. J. [Goanet]Re: Abbe Faria articles
Hi Dom: Thanks so much. In Goa, we use good, old fashioned technology. I just happened to be referencing at the Central Library, just a couple of days Fr Loiola's query came -- and quite by coincidence on the very same subject. Hence putting out the information wasn't anything so amazing! Permit me to share your note with Goanetters, who would also be interested in accessing the dommartin.cc site. Just a few minutes after I had dashed off my 4 am as-usually-nocturnal query about Abbe Faria's home, this is what I read in Mario Cabral e Sa and Lourdes Bravo da Costa Rodrigues' *Great Goans* Volume I: How Candolim might have been then (in Abbe Faria's time) is discernible even today. Sheltered from public gaze by high compound walls with dense coconut groves surrounding the palatial houses, the landed gentry of the village lived in an unreallistic world. The house where Abbe Faria was born still exists. It is a public orphanage now -- an unintended tribute to Catarina. The room where he was born is now the Superintendent's bedroom. Close by, another palatial home with a marvellous private chapel, has long since been converted into a home for the aged. Further down the road, the house where the Pinto's revolt was hatched has been converted into a hospital (A part of the house is today occupied by nuns of the order of Maria Bambina, who have set up a hospital - BOSIO. The other half belongs to the heirs of the Pintos -- the family of the late Dr Charley Pinto, an eminent surgeon of Bombay, and Capt Edwin Pinto... Of course the discernible even today comment was made in 1985, much before the full force of the tourism boom in the area changed the face of Candolim majorly. FN PS: I do have a small library of Goa related books, collecting which was a hobby during my college days and in my early stint in Herald in the 'eighties. It had 600 books, almost all on Goa, in a range of languages (including German and Marathi) when I stopped counting. Anyone wanting to have a look is more than welcome... wish more Goa-related records could be digitised and thus made available to all.
