Re: [Goanet] World Goa Day in Melbourne ignites Cultural Heritage ofYore
As regards the following passage in the Bharat Times report «to celebrate Goan identity, gained with the recognition of Konkani on August 20, some 18 years ago», kindly note that what happened (more than) 18 years ago, not on August 20 but on February 4, was the passing of the Official Language Act by the Legislative Assembly of the then Union Territory of Goa, Daman and Diu according to Konkani the status of the sole official language of Goa. The memorable event of August 20, 1992 (therefore, 13 years ago) was the recognition of Konkani - by unanimous vote of the two chambers of the Parliament of New Delhi - as a national language of India and its inclusion in the eighth schedule of the Constitution. I have seen a report on the Goan Festival held in the London and there is no mention of 'World Goa Day' for the benefit of all here it is:- http://www.goanvoice.org.uk/newsletter/2005/Aug/issue2/ Report: UK Goan Festival of 31 July 2005. UK Goan Festival 2005 >From Diego Pinto, Chairman of the Festival Organising Committee: The rain shied away to make way for the Goans to celebrate and thousands came to the most popular event in the Goan calendar - The Goan Festival which was yet another resounding success. Commencing with Holy Mass, the Chief celebrant Rt. Rev. Alex Dias, Bishop of Port Blair (Andaman & Nicobar Islands) along with six concelebrants, made it as solemn as the old Pontifical Mass. The Chief Guest, Antonette Mendes - Melody Queen and film star of Amchem Noxib looked stunning in red. She was presented with a bouquet of flowers by Bernie Gracias, wife of the President of the Goan Association UK. The Goan Association (UK) is delighted to work with the Village/Club Organisations and has enjoyed an excellent relationship over the years. This partnership has made it possible to successfully organise the festival and sponsor Ven. Fr. Agnelo's Commemoration Mass. There were 40 stalls in all, 19 of them selling food with each one endeavouring to excel in Goan culinary art as this day always offers a wide variety of the Goan cuisine. Appreciation should be attributed to the backroom staff and various volunteers - the manning of the gate, the traffic controllers, medics & performers, who all offer their assistance/services absolutely gratis. Comment: There is no mention at all of 'World Goa Day' cheers, Gabe Menezes London England.

[Goanet]Re: (Goanet] World Goa Day!
To: Goanet Management. I have read with dismay a post is short of praises for our own Goan - Mr. Rene Barretto, author of 'World Goa day movement'. It takes a lot of time, money and energy to organise a movement such as 'World Goa Day'. Rene has put in long hours to search and research ways and means to get Goans together and helped to uphold our Goan identity through our culture, Konkani language food, heritage, music, literate etc. He has been very instrumental and pro-active in endeavouring to get Goans together albeit our inherent weakness i.e. the crab mentality running in our veins. Goa is now known more widely than before through the WGD movement. The non- Goans, particularly the Europeans who were not aware of the existence of Goa have come to know of it and its people through World Goa Day. Non Goans are intrigued and want to know more about us and have even visited Goa after witnessing WGD events. Good on you Rene. Hope the Minister of Tourism in Goa will analyse the invisible benefits Goa gets through this free of charge advertisement for Goa and Goans in Goa. Rene, I echo the support given to you so far by Mr. Sanjay Colaco's and Mr. Alfred de Tavares. You are doing a great job. Please continue to push us 'susegad' Goans as you have done for the last 5 years. I realise the time and effort that goes in organising such event. It does not only involve in out of pocket money, it drains you emotionally with brick bats, people's suspicion and moreover it takes away lot of family ltime. I suppose someone has to do it!! My close study of World Goa Day celebration has brought many Goans together at least for the day and particularly all those Goans who for some reasons do not want to be associated with a structured organisation that has hierarchy and have seen members sitting on ice... An organisation or a community for that matter is made up of FIVE BONES: a.. The WISHBONE - who wish everyone else would do the work b.. The JAWBONES - who talk and do little else c.. The KNUCKLEBONES - who knock everything d.. The BACKBONES- who get on with the job and carry responsibility e.. The TAILBONES - albeit few, who think and do evil things with their 'deosarachi shapdee' Rene, you have done a great job and you are among those Goans who fall in the Backbones category. My hats off to you, mate!!! Kudos to you Rene, and best wishes for the New Year 2005 and to all our Goans who forgive and forget those who think others may have trespassed against them. OSCAR C. LOBO WORLD GOA DAY CO-ORDINATOR Melbourne Australia.

Dear Constantino Xavier, That is a great job by a young person. No problem in shifting the Goa Day a month behind the rest of the world celebrations. In fact 20 Sept would have been better in Goa, too.August is very rainy here.We keep the date because Konkani was recognized officially as a 'language' for inclusion in the Constitution of India[ 8th schedule] Ligorio Soares at Houston[USA] at 80 and counting must be the oldest co-ordinator of WGD while you are the youngest. Age,no bar. Lucky folks to be viewing "Amchem Noxib" in an auditorium. Even in Goa,one has to see it on a TV.Perhaps we can use the LCD-aided 'big screen',now. 'Casa de Goa' and 'Ekvat' have some Goans I know can dance the 'mando' and 'dekni'. Have a nice time...and let us know more about it after it happens. All the best. Viva Goa. Dear Mr.Botelho, There are three English dailies in Goa; the third one is 'Gomantak Times',which has more Goa-centric news than any other English newpaper available in Goa. All Goans are not readers of English newspapers. They do not become less Goan than those that are net savvy or English reading type. We have to think of them ,too,if we want to unite. Personally, I would rather try and get a news item on world Goa Day into all the newspapers and free-sheeters like Vasco Watch and Mapusa/Panaji/Margao Plus(with a supporting advertisement ,if needed,to motivate publication of the news item) than to publish a supplement which is rather expensive and not cost effective at all. Nonetheless, your suggestion to spread the message beyond the net is very good indeed. We had exhibitions of plants during the last three years to coincide with the WGD.We did not formally link it,but brought Goans together and made them proud of being Goan. While the NRIs had cultural programmes, picnics and parties on 23 August, we focussed on the wealth of coconut, the goodness of cocnut oil and the Mexican pest that is playing hell with coconuts during the last three years. We even published a book to inform the goans who have coconut trees how to rid themselves of this problem. We also showed them how to enjoy tender coconut water intead of getting kidney stones by not consuming enough water because of the jaundice scare and the detection of pesticide residues in almost all brands of bottled Mineral Water and soft drinks in Delhi and Maharashtra,Pepsi and Coke inclusive.Tender coconut water is packed by Nature in a cent percent biodegradable container. The world is growing tender, are we? Finally, would you contribute in part for the issue of supplement/advertising support? We also showed them how to enjoy tender coconut water intead of getting kidney stones by not consuming enough water because of the jaundice scare and the detection of pesticide residues in almost all brands of bottled Mineral Water and soft drinks in Delhi and Maharashtra,Pepsi and Coke inclusive.Tender coconut water is packed by Nature in a cent percent biodegradable container. The world is growing tender, are we? Finally, would you contribute in part for the issue of supplement/advertising support? Re: [Goanet]WORLD GOA DAY 20th Aug 2003 -Where is the Goan flag George?
A few years ago George let go the Goan flag. There was a massive hue and cry especially from two individuals N. Kamat and F. Noronha who were bouncing up and down and accusing George of being a Salazarist. George was petrified and started Goa Sudharop. Today is Goa Day, Basilio has provided with an anthem, come on George let go the flag again. Viva Goa! __ Yahoo! Re: [Goanet]WORLD GOA DAY, 2003 CELEBRATIONS AT ASSOCIACAO ACADEMICA DEMOIRA ( A report)
Gabe:> Cheap skates, I would have donated a bottle of Whisky.! Flo : Sure Gabe, you are welcome. Only, we do not skate that much here in Goa, for our roads are in bad shape. And if you mean ice skates, then sorry we in Goa cannot afford more than a block of ice at a time. Gabe:> We throw away whisky bottles here, in the West. Flo : We are better off here in Goa then you are in your West. We throw away not only whisky bottles but all sorts of other liquor bottles too. And the scrap collectors take them away free of cost. ## # Send submissions for Goanet to [EMAIL PROTECTED] # # PLEASE remember to stay on-topic (related to Goa), and avoid top-posts # # More details on Goanet at http://joingoanet.shorturl.com/ # # Please keep your discussion/tone polite, to reflect respect to others # ##
RE: [Goanet] WORLD GOA DAY 2003
Hello all, Well Canadian Goan Clubs will be on track soon. I am still in touch with G.O.A. Toronto but since they have their big event ViVa Goa very close, I say give them some more time to come out with results. I am still trying to establish link with Vancouver Goans though some friends of mine. Will keep you posted. >From Rene Barreto: The Goans Association Calgary, under the leadership of their President Wilson Soares and in association with Goans of Edmonton have drawn up this years WGD celebrations. They hope that Goans from Vancouver will join them too. Your SUPPORT will be OUR SUCCESS Gilbert Lawrence writes: Great job President Wilson Soares and the G.O.A. of Calgary and Vancouver. Great programs. Do you know when your and our compadres in Greater Toronto Area are hosting their World Goa Day celebration? We can then put the dates on our calendar and collaborate with our neighbors to the north making it an international event. ## # Send submissions for Goanet to [EMAIL PROTECTED] # # PLEASE remember to stay on-topic (related to Goa), and avoid top-posts # # More details on Goanet at http://joingoanet.shorturl.com/ # # Please keep your discussion/tone polite, to reflect respect to others # ## ___ Goanet mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.goanet.org/mailman/listinfo/goanet
