On World Goa Day last year , I stressed the impact that overseas Goans can have on Goa today. With Indian laws changing and persons of Indian origin being given more rights, it is important that all people of Goan origin and residence realise that events in Goa are a part of their history, culture and human rights. Towards this end, and considering the million Goans in the diaspora, I completely support the interests of Goans worldwide. We can attain much from this forum and we need to meet to initiate a plan of action. ( loss leader) Gabe, The GOA usually makes $40,000+ from the Viva Goa every year. Entry is $8.00 or $10 with 6,000 people attending. Beers were $4.50 for a 300ml bottle. Parking is free. The current President, Oscar Furtado, has done a real good job turning around the finances of the association. He gets corporate sponsors for most events and if I am not mistaken, has almost paid off all the mortgage on the clubs property. The property was bought at a time when real estate was at its peaks. Real estate is at high points again and that property has appreciated. Hope this helps. Mervyn3.0 __ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo! Four years after joining a venture capital firm, Marks Fernandes is promoted from Partner to Managing Director of Sierra Ventures, a Northern California based investment banking corporation. Mark Fernandes born and brought up in Bombay, has a BE from India; a Masters from Berkeley, CA; and an MBA from Harvard, MA. Mark, at 35 years old, is a great role model for young Goans who can look forward to successful career with hard work and dedication. He is a great husband and a father of two delightful girls, a good Catholic man who has little choice with two uncles as Jesuit priests. Sierra Ventures is an investment for endowment funds and generally not for individual investors. Among its investments is funding of several start-ups and IPOs in Bangalore, India. Regards, GL Subject: In today's venture wire: Sierra Ventures Nears Finish Line In Raising 9th Fund Sierra Ventures Nears Finish Line In Raising 9th Fund: By Tennille Tracy. 7/31/2006 Sierra Ventures has collected the lion's share of the $400 million it set out to raise for its ninth venture capital fund, people close to the firm said. The Menlo Park, Calif.-based firm held a first close on roughly $380 million on July 6, representing the full contribution of its institutional investors. The firm's general partners, friends, family and other individuals will supply the remaining $20 million. The firm is expected to hold a final closing later this year, one person said. Like many venture capital firms, Sierra Ventures is raising a fund that's smaller than the vehicle it raised during the go-go days of the Internet bubble. Sierra Ventures IX LP weighs in at $100 million shy of the $500 million the firm raised for its eighth fund in 2000. Most VC firms are raising more modest amounts of capital after a glut of venture capital dollars raised in the late 1990s helped fuel the dotcom-era investment frenzy, which ended with severe losses among many VC funds. Among the investors in Sierra's Fund VIII were University of Chicago, Duke Management Co., Los Angeles County Employees' Retirement, Montana Board of Investments, Stanford Management Co. and Yale University. The investment team overseeing Sierra's ninth fund will look somewhat different from the one that managed the prior fund. Managing director Jeffrey Drazan announced his intention last year to resign from Sierra once the eighth fund was fully deployed. Drazan is forming a growth-capital firm, Bertram Capital, with his brother. Meanwhile, Sierra promoted Mark Fernandes and Ben Yu to managing directors, from venture partners. Dear all An update on the World Cup Goan soccer pool - In June 2006, Gabe Menezes (London) kindly initiated a pool, proceeds to benefit Senior Citizens in Goa through Goa Sudharop. Thanks to all who contributed and to the winner, www.goa-world.com, who generously donated their winnings for a total amount of approximately Rs. 29,000/-. After Goa Sudharop did their due diligence, the Senior Citizens Forum, Margao, was selected to be the recipient. Rs. 20,000/- will be disbursed to approximately 30 seniors for medical needs. The vetting process has been done to determine need and each individual selected will receive reimbursement for their medicines or spectacles or related medical need. This process has taken time to insure 100% of the money is spent with complete accountability so donors can feel satisfied their hard-earned money benefited those in need. The balance of Rs. 9,000/- will be disbursed to seniors in due course. Again, this effort is the result of a number of people, all done on a volunteer basis. Although time consuming, this shows what the World G.O.A.N. network can and has done in the past. For those of you who do not know, the World G.O.A.N. network stands for Goan Organizations, Associations, and NGOs/non-profits with supporters and volunteers on every continent (except Antartica). Sometimes, Goans actions speak louder than words and empty messages splashed over cyberspace. It a time for Goans to be proud of collectively having accomplished something. Dear Vivek, Let me reiterate for the benefit of whoever maybe following this discussion, my original premise. That the non-polluting retail sector can pump much needed money and infrastructural development into the Goan economy, and that it aligns perfectly with our tourism industry. Now, let me respond to the issues you have raised. I shall try to keep my counterpoints brief. Firstly, I'm glad we agree on the fact that nothing can be asserted with complete certainty, because your earlier statement was that one of my contentions is "completely false". But let's not belabour old points. Let's move on to the more substantive issues of the debate. 1. Walmart & other big corporations. This seems to be your major bone of contention. To keeps things in perspective, India is far from welcoming this kind of retail. It has only recently opened its doors to single-brand retail, which means while a Marks & Spencers could make an entry, the Walmarts of the world will have to wait. 2. Your premise that Walmart and other such organisations force people into bare minimum wage jobs without access to health-care. Well, that maybe true. You are confining retail sector experience entirely to the American context. There are the IKEAs and Marks and Spencers of this world as well, which uphold the highest standard in human resource management and have become beacons in this respect. Infact, landing a job at Marks & Sparks (as it is affectionately called) is a source of pride in the UK and elsewhere in the world, where M&S sets up shop. 3. Your contention: mega corporations have indeed developed acres of asphalt coated shopping malls by destroying prairies, open wilderness and wetlands. Unfortunately today, progress is synonymous with urbanisation especially in the metro areas. Is it just the retail sector that is responsible for the concretisation of America? And the rest of America is operating out of mud-huts? Will the IT park in Goa, not cut down acres of prime land to set up shop? Will it respect the environment by building eco-friendly mudhuts as their offices? It is only with government restraint, proper town planning and lack of corruption at all levels of government, that we can halt the total destruction of the environment. Otherwise, any big business will take advantage of that vital resource, land. 4. That big box retailers shut down the local "mom & pop" stores. Yes ofcourse they do. But that's the dynamic of free market economies. One can argue that foreign imports are detrimental to home industry but we know from experience that opening up the economy made the Mahindras and Tatas of India, even more fierce and competitive. They thrived in this atmosphere rather than succumbed and where need be, entered into partnership with foreign investment rather than competition. Mom & pop stores will succumb to competition in whichever form it comes, unless mom & pop stores themselves are highly competitive. Lastly, I've resurrected the exact quote from you, that I took utmost umbrage at: VIVEK: cecils post is a excellent and well writen rebuttal to some of the outrageous and absurd advice dished out from all over the world to goans in goa! My advice is neither outrageous nor absurd and while I may not be a Goan in Goa, I am still a Goan.Other than that insult though I think you've raised some excellent points of debate. [Goanet] ROSEFERNS' KONKANI TIATR FOR WORLD GOA DAY IN GERMANY

Confirm your bookings early or miss-out Visit http://www.garcabranca.com for details/booking/confirmation. ROSEFERNS' KONKANI TIATR FOR WORLD GOA DAY IN GERMANY The Goan Association Germany celebrated the World Goa Day 2006 on 22 July 06 in the most traditional way, with a cultural offering of a Konkani tiatr "Tumchea Moga Passot", written and directed by Roseferns -billed as the King of Centuries - and enacted by his troupe of eight, who had come from Goa. This is the second year the GAG is celebrating the WGD. Following the speech by Mariano Pereira -the general secretary, and a welcome speech by Matano Gracias -the President, the programe got off with WGD's theme song "Proud to be a Goan" penned by Spain-based Basilio Magno at the request of WGD founder Rene Barreto. The hilarious comedy, interposed with melodious songs, was a special treat for Goans in Germany, who never had the chance of seeing a Konkani tiatr on stage; this is the first time a full Konkani tiatr has been shown there. Roseferns, who is celebrating his 25th year of his brilliant tiatrical career and his 60th dramatic production, had come with his famous troupe, comprising: LAWRY -melody king; ANTONETTE - melody queen, SALLY -ace comedian, SEBY -new comdey prince, TARI - the latest Goan craze, KEZIAH -the favourite of young and old, JAMES VAZ -topmost organist. James was joined by two London based musicians: drummer Pauly, and guitarist Philip. Lending their presence in Germany were also the chairman of Konkani Dramatic Association London Mr. Damciano, and the general secretary Francis D'Silva. It is the KDA that brings the tiatrs from Goa to London, and thanks to their courtesy the GAG brought them to Germany, paying for theier Germany visas and fares from London, and modest professional fees. The Managing Comittee of GAG took care of their board and lodge. Artistically, the Tiatr was a great success and everyone enjoyed it thoroughly, even some of those who were not familiar with Konkani. Some Goans, like in any part of the world, shy of Konkani and do not wish to appear to know the language. But thos who loved Konkani and its mainstay -tiatrs, travelled hundreds of kilometers, coming from far off places like Sturttgart, Kaiserslautern, Bad Willdungen, Bad Kreuznach, Paderborn and Freiburg. Conspicious by their absence were many Goans from Ruesselsheim -a town only 30 kms from Frankfurt-Preun-gesheim, where the tiatr was staged Germany has a small Goan comunity, and to bring a big show like this one goes beyond their financial capabilities. But they had hoped for larger audience. The presence of just 100 or so spectators, and consequent loss to the Goa Association Germany, prompted Francis D'Silva - the general secretary of the Konkani Dramatic Association to offer the GAG a free tiatr of their own in autumn, paying themselves for their travel from London, etc., to help to make up for the loss. Great gesture indeeed, on the part of KDA uk, whose passion it appears to be the promotion of Konkani language through Konkani tiatrs and songs. Regarding the list you provided, it appears you have not looked at any of the actual numbers, because they do not support your case regarding deterioration of morality at all. Plus, some of the items in your list are absurd e.g. medical problems in adults, psychological problems, stress, depression, single-family homes, children brought up in single-family homes, and ADS in children. Most common medical problems have causes that have nothing to do with morality e.g. heart disease, hypertension, diabetes, cancer and stroke. What is the relationship between morality and psychological problems, stress and depression? People living in multi-family housing such as apartment buildings are no more moral than those living in single-family homes. Don't you live in a single-family home? Now if you are referring to single-parent homes then the one of the most common reasons for single parenthood is death of one parent, especially in India, which nobody would consider immoral. Another non-immoral reason is adoption of a postnatal child or a frozen human embryo that would otherwise have been discarded. A third non-immoral reason from the standpoint of the parent would be a child born as a consequence of rape, the single parent being the victim in this case. The three reasons that might be regarded as immoral but only by a puritanical mind focussed on certain notions of sexual morality, are single unwed heterosexual parents, divorced or separated parents, and single homosexual parents. Do you regard these latter reasons as immoral? Also, do you regard divorce because of a failed marriage as immoral? Why is ADS in children immoral? Is it their fault or their parents fault? The inclusion of teenage motherhood actually backfires from your standpoint because before the 1950s, especially in India, every mother was a teenage mother. My great grandmother had 4 kids before the age of 20. Regarding statistical data on the other items you listed, I could not find continuous 100-year data on any of them, except homicide rates. Here are the available statistics on the items you listed for the U.S. I dont have access to Indian data as yet. We can certainly compare the present generation with the prior one, viz. 2000 2004 with 1970 1980. I also have values for the 1930s, 40s or 50s for some of them. I am curious as to why you did not include homicides, rapes and the number of executed prisoners. But here are the actual numbers for your list and more: 1. Divorce rates: 1945 18 per 1000 married women; 1973 23 per 1000 married women; 2001 18 per 1000 married women. 2. Single family homes: Please see above for why this is silly and/or confusing. But regarding single-parent homes: 1970 15% of children live in such homes; 1996 28% of children live in such homes; 3. Unwed and teenage mothers: Unwed mothers: 1957 15.8 live births per 1000 women; 1977 25.1 live births per 1000 women; 2004 23.7 live births per 1000 women. Teenage mothers: 1957 - 97.3 live births per 1000 women; 1970 69.5 live births per 1000 women; 2004 41.9 live births per 1000 women. 4. Children brought up in single family homes: Please see above for why this is silly and/or confusing. 5. Teenage sex: My grandmothers, and all my ancestors, especially the females, had teenage sex. But here are the numbers that I could find: 1982 46.9% females ever had sex, 55.2% (1988) males ever had sex; 2002 45.5 % ever had sex, 45.7 % males ever had sex. Teenage pregnancies: 1976 101.4 per 1000 women; 2000 84.5 per 1000 women. STDs: Syphilis/gonorrhea/chancroid 1950 342 per 100,000; 1970 343 per 100,000; 2003 128 per 100,000. 6. Drug abuse in adults and children: Drug abuse in high school seniors Cigarettes: 1980 - 30.5%; 2004 25% Marijuana: 1980 33.7%; 2004 19.9% Cocaine: 1980 5.2%; 2004 2.3% Inhalants: 1980 1.4%; 2004 1.5% Alcohol: 1980 72%; 2004 48% 7. Abortions on demand: 1976 - 24.2 per 1000 women; 2002 20.8 per 1000 women. 8. Psychologic problems in children incl

Dear Elisabeth: I will try to respond to your post as systematically and to the point as I can. I return may I expect that you do the same? EC: Can you verify with utmost certainty that no infrastructural development has taken place in the US, on account of retailers? Me: No, in my opinion in such issues nothing can be ever said with "utmost uncertainity" Walmart and other mega corporations have indeed developed acres of asphlat coated shopping malls by destroying prairies, open wilderness and wetlands. In fact the assertions you make about harlem being "completely" re-energised , "most working class americans welcoming walmart" , "mandos being third rate" are these made with utmost certainity? As i pointed out allmost 275 communities across US have successfuly stopped walmart from "renergising" and "putting life" into their neighborhoods. Not exactly a sign of welcoming isn't it?? Zogby conducted a poll for a union-led group called WakeUpWalMart, asked 1,012 people across the US about their attitudes to Wal-Mart. Of the respondents, 59% said they agreed with the statement that "Wal-Mart is bad for America". Your following statement is a good example : "Two years ago there was nothing but prairie. Today, it is a labyrinth of carefully laid out roads and shops, all undertaken by the retail sector." ME: Please visit the downtown of your area and see if there are any empty malls or empty reail stores. If walmarts and other mega corporations history is any indication probably Walmart will leave that area and destroy another prarie somewhere else, and maybe bring "life" into a community. The impact of a walmart or any other mega corporation on local businesses is devastating. Probably you have not given thought to that side of the story that for every school drop out making a barely minimum wage in any of the big retailer shops there are families who have been ruined economically. EC : "Do you know that partnership loans and subsidies are routinely doled out to retailers actively engaged in developing the community?" ME: Who gives out these subsidies? In fact by colluding with the government and making the tas payer pay for a large part of their own obligations to their employees large retailers have developed their own bank balance. Do you believe that forcing people into near minimum wage jobs without access to good quality health care, destroying natural environment to develop huge retail malls, driving out local Mom and Pop enterprises out of business and contributing to a host of other problems due to what is called "urban sprawl" is "developing the comunity"? You said : "Afterall, it was you who told us that Goans in Goa know what's best for them." Dont put words into other peoples mouth. I am begining to believe that you have a habit of doing so. You called me arrogant insular and myopic for merely seconding cecils viewpont, a viewpoint shared by Sunith and at least one other poster. Your post seems to suggest that I am opposed to NRIs or NRGs giving advice. I never said anything to that effect, I merely expressed my disagreement with some of your views, a position I still hold. I never called walmart and other retailers evil, i merely pointed out that their business practices are detrimental to local businesses, local ecology as well as local culture. Be it immigration law, labor rights, equal oportunity to minorities as well as women walmart has been frequently on the wrong side of law as well as public opinion. Please let me clearly state that I am merely pointing out the "idealism" in your statements regarding the conduct of behemoth retailers like walmart and others and their impact o the small towns in US. To be more blunt, the 'outsider business', as Gadgil calls it, is a calculated attempt by shrewdies like Manohar Parrikar to win over an influential and eloquent section of Catholic Goan public opinion to his side, while he tries his communal/caste games with the Hindu side of the electorate. And it's not without takers. Just like he did manage to sell his "good governance" mantra to affluent (read, upper claste) Goan Catholics just before the 2002 elections. Many are willing to buy this logic. Chauvinism runs deep (not just in Goa, but across India, in Europe, the US, and many other places where divide-and-rule politics replace all need for ideology or a decent program). On one point though, I think some clarifications are in order. > I however support Vivek's view that the initiatives should be lead by > Goans. This point has much validity. But 'Goans' is a very loaded concept. How does one define the term? If one means 'ethnic' Goans, then about 60-70% of the people involved with organising the workshop are Goans. If one means people who live round the year in Goa and have been doing so for years and are actively involved with social issues in Goa, then 100% of the organisers are Goans. And the panel on Goa comprises 'Goans', whichever way you define it. Many of the resource persons for the workshop are from outside Goa, and a respected and noted national-level anti-communal organisation was brought in, because we felt the need for a national perspective -- Goa is not an island, isolated from the rest of India. And Goa is now confronting the kind of organised political communalism which has been rampant in the rest of India for some time. There is much to learn from experience elsewhere if we are to successfully combat this monster. This 'outsider' business is a red herring, frequently used strategically by the Sangh Parivar to try and keep people in Goa from uniting against communal forces. We saw it employed with some success in the case of Sanvordem-Curchorem; the argument was that 'outsiders' had come into Goa and disturbed things here, and thus deserved what they got (though this was not actually said in so many words, it was clearly implied). People here have been falling for this red herring with depressing regularity. Let us be very clear about one thing: communalism is a beast with an insatiable appetite. Today it is targeting those who are weakest in Goa -- 'outsiders', Muslims; tomorrow, strengthened, it will start consuming its next victims. And unless checked it will not stop till it has consumed us all. Let us all come together to tackle this menace. [Goanet] Goa: English Medium Primary Education for Better Future

Confirm your bookings early or miss-out Visit http://www.garcabranca.com for details/booking/confirmation. English Medium Primary Education for Better Future By Cypriano Lopes, Santa Cruz, Goa Goans were well known for their English language skills, and were most sought after in India and abroad. They have excelled in jobs and services. That is how in the good old days Goans could earn their living in Bombay, East Africa, U.K. and Gulf countries. Job opportunities were hard to come by for them in their native land. The only option left was migration to avoid starvation at home. That is why you find Goans scattered all over the world. These were ordinary Goans, who by their sheer hard work, devotion to duty and honesty, coupled with their mastery over the English language were able to carve a niche for themselves in diverse fields. The end result was, the economic uplift of their brethren at home. With one earning member abroad, entire Goan families could eke out a decent living, and at times, even live in style. The missionaries played a vital role in English education in India. Jesuit run schools and colleges were the most sought after. Admission to these institutions meant a sure ticket to success. India's most successful politicians and bureaucrats owe their upward mobility in society to the Jesuit run institutions. In Goa the Diocesan and Archdiocesan schools contributed immensely to the emancipation of the masses. The less privileged common people were able to educate their children, as these schools were established in every village and town. The children of the socio-economically backward classes were thus able to brush shoulders with their peers, who were well off economically and educated in the best of schools in India and abroad. Alas, the dreams of the economically weaker sections of society were shattered in 1990. The High Court order forced the private primary schools to pay the same pay scales as the government schools. When the private primary schools approached the government for grants, the government was willing to give grants only to vernacular medium primary schools, and the same were denied to English medium primary schools. The Diocesan and Archdiocesan schools who were pioneers of English medium education, without giving a second thought overnight switched over to Konknni medium to avail grants. The catastrophic effects, of the switch over to Konknni medium, are for every one to see. The entire education system has turned topsy-turvy. The haves prefer to send their wards to the mushrooming English medium primary schools. Whereas the have-nots, have no other option, than to educate their children in the vernacular medium schools run by the Church. In Goa the Church runs schools that have their pre-primary nurseries in English. Then the child is made to switch over to Konknni at the primary level and then again it is English medium at the secondary level, higher secondary and college level. Why are the children made to pay for the follies of someone else? Why is Konknni medium sandwiched between pre-primary and secondary level? What is the logic behind this irrational and illogical education system? In the bargain the child is burdened with shifting of medium. What for? Is it to satisfy the false egos of a few language protagonists? Why are the poor parents not given a choice to choose what is best for their children? What sort of future generations are we trying to produce with more and more emphasis on vernacular medium of instruction instead of science and maths? In this age of globalization, where comparative costs determine the economic health of a nation, the need of the hour is to build human resource base of technically sound, efficient and result oriented individuals. We have to invest in education that lays more stress on research and development. Because it is from here that cutting edge technologies evolve and economies grow by leaps and bounds. Why are we wasting the child's time and skills in changing medium of instruction and hamper their intellectual growth? Years after the vernacular medium policy was introduced in Goa, wards of economically backward communities continue to suffer. The English advantage they enjoyed, has vanished and students who otherwise scored well in English fail miserably in SSC & HSSC exams. The economic health of these marginalized sections of society is pathetic. They are left with no choice but to seek low paid jobs in Goa and elsewhere. They are exploited to the hilt wherever

My mother, in a stinging refutation of Samuel Huntington's theory, named me Ashwin. ''Ashwin Ahmad,'' she said. ''Rolls off the tongue, doesn't it.'' And so it was. Without having done anything I had been born special. As my father said, ''There may be many Ashwins and many Ahmads, but hardly anyone will have the two together.'' As far as I knew, my father was right. Puffed up like a peacock, I straddled my dual 'religiosity' with pride, along with a few fibs. ''We celebrate Diwali and Eid. Yes, we go to both mandirs and masjids,'' I mentioned to my awestruck friends (though we went to neither). ''You must be very tired then,'' the more perceptive among them observed. At any rate, I revelled in my 'cool' status. Marx, I thought, was right. This stuff was heady opium and I was, as the jingle goes, lovin' it. I soon realised my 'difference' came with its baggage. In Saudi Arabia, we got crank calls — people wanted to know what faith we practised. Did we drink at home? Did we have beef or pork? What 'gods' did we worship? But it didn't matter then. I flattered myself by thinking how important I was. A salaam or a namaste from me could mean victory for either 'side'. These modern-day crusades, I sighed mockingly. But since such queries were so immature, I could never really take offence. My religion, as I delighted in telling anyone who asked, was football. But this fairytale world did not last. As I began working in India in 1997, the Wilde wit, with which I had previously parried off questions about my religious identity, suddenly no longer amusing. Increasingly, I found myself having to become a spokesperson for everything all Muslims did all over India and abroad. ''Why do Muslims always support Pakistan?'' I don't know. ''Why do you people keep four wives but pray five times?'' I don't know, and I don't see the connection. ''Has your mother converted? Most people do in these mixed marriages, you know,'' said an elderly man learnedly. ''No, I don't know! Why don't you phone and ask her,'' was what I wanted to say. But I said nothing. At first, I treated these questions as ignorant and impertinent but something I had to get used to. I followed the example of my hero Superman. He had his kryptonite and I had mine. Of course, then it didn't hurt so much. I didn't connect what was happening in the outside world with my life. This was the India where my parents, my uncle, my father's aunt, had had mixed marriages. Nothing anyone said or did could alter our freedom to do that, and be, just be! But things did change. Perhaps I was at fault. In my naivete, I thought being ''confused'', as one Muslim acquaintance put it, would carry me through. It had for 25 years of my life. I had eaten and drunk, loved and lived with people without bothering who they were. But the world, it seemed, had suddenly become very bothered with who I was, a fact I learnt while house-hunting. Eyeing my faux Calvin Klein shirt and Omega watch, property dealers sprang out of their somnambulistic state, only to recoil when they heard the surname. Nahin ho sakta. Aap wahan Zakir Nagar mein try kijiye. What amazed me was their matter-of-fact attitude. It was as though they were doing a jigsaw puzzle, where all pieces had to be put in their proper place. At first I rebelled. But being James Dean got me nowhere. I didn't want to be a rebel without a home. It took my mother with her bindi and crisp sari to convince my Muslim-hating landlady that wife and I were kosher. So, for the sake of a home, I slipped my cosmopolitan identity under the pillow and listened silently as the landlady harangued about ''terrorists, dirty Muslims, all of whom deserved to be hanged and killed''. I let my wife sign the rent agreement, and ensured the cheques were made out in the name of 'Vishal' — her maiden name. I put no plaque outside the door or the letter-box. If anyone asked, I was Ashwin. The Ashwin had effaced the Ahmad. And

Brian 'Last Bus to Vasco' Mendonca read his poems yesterday evening Sat 29 July 2006, at 6 pm, in the picturesque environs of the Secunderabad Sailing Club. Brian is here at the invitation of the Poetry Society Hyderabad. The event was hosted by Mrs G N Ruttonsha and Prof Lakshmi Chandra. Overlooking the angry Hussain Sagar lake, with crests of white foam, the rains beat over the banyan tree as the drenched crow swooped overhead. After an elaborate high tea, a goodly crowd of 50+ poetry lovers gathered under chandeliers to hear the sound of the last bus on its way to vasco. Prof Isaac Sequeira a goan and UGC professor emeritus introduced brian. a terrific CD system recreated the ambience of NH 17 and 'pantulems' received high praise for its fishy allusion. the deep hall echoed with laughter at 'On the run' and 'UIMCF'. discarding the dais, brian yanked his chair just upfront near the seated semicircle, and read his poems to a mesmerized audience, who hadn't quite seen anything like it before. the interaction was spirited and one gent observed 'i have not heard such music in poetry before'. meenakshi mukherjee called for a rendering of some poems which were not in the book. brian obliged with 'Traveller' and 'Srinagar 1998'. 'Imagery, music, laughter, song -- so beautifully put together!' -- wrote DGP Ms Aruna Bahuguna who took the time to come for a while. 'Some of your poems are so deep, while some others are so simple' observed another. brian responded saying, 'the ordinary is poetic.' the rainswept evening recalled brian's reading at cafe literati calangute on the previous saturday 22 july . . . the bells of st andrews ushered the evening to a close, by which time dark had overtaken the dusk. 10 copies of Last Bus to Vasco: Poems from Goa were sold at the event and 4 among friends in Hyderabad so far. the traveller-poet does another reading at 5.30 pm today (Sunday, 30 july) at the premises of his alma mater, the Central Institute of English and Foreign Languages (CIEFL) -- where brian did his PhD on madness in the Gothic novel -- before catching the 3.40 a.m. flight back to delhi. to be in time for work come monday. . . . ___ Goanet mailing list Goanet@lists.goanet.org http://lists.goanet.org/listinfo.cgi/goanet-goanet.org

In addition to Hamara School, a centre for underprivileged children in St. Inez, which has been functioning successfully for a number of years, the NGO is now getting ready to start a hostel for underprivileged/homeless children in Taleigao. They have been allotted an abandoned school by the Education Department which needs a complete renovation, adding of bathrooms, kitchen etc. A grant from the German Government has been received for the entire equipment, furniture etc., however, the total cost of renovating the school building has to be raised by Hamara Project. Many excellent musicians have spontaneously agreed to support the cause, and the entire proceeds of this very special concert will go to the existing school as well as the upcoming hostel. Dear Vivek, If you are going to counter an argument, perhaps you should stay away from the hyperbole. "Completely false"? Can you verify with utmost certainty that no infrastructural development has taken place in the US, on account of retailers? Do you know that partnership loans and subsidies are routinely doled out to retailers actively engaged in developing the community? Do you know that Target in Minnesota has just donated the biggest wing to the Minnesota Institute of Art, not to mention the Target Conference center and its deep involvement with the community from education to welfare. Did you know that Harlem has been completely re-engergised by the investment retailers have made? I don't even have to go as far as Harlem to state my case. I have only to look outside my own window. Two years ago there was nothing but prairie. Today, it is a labyrinth of carefully laid out roads and shops, all undertaken by the retail sector. You then go on to state Walmart as your primary example of how evil retailers are. Well, Walmart may have its detractors but most working-class Americans welcome Walmart with open arms. If Walmart did not exist, then those high-school drop-outs that work there and earn at least a minimum wage, would be out somewhere else doing far worse that shelving merchandise. Perhaps it may interest you to know that I have been to Bombay Bazaar. It's precisely because no one has taken the time and effort to develop the retail sector that you can cite a shop (not even a Bazaar), as your foremost retailer in Goa. If Bombay Bazaar employs only "non-Goans", perhaps it's because no one has really worked out any incentive or penalty for not employing Goans. Maybe Goans in Goa are happy with this status quo. Afterall, it was you who told us that Goans in Goa know what's best for them. Yes, no doubt there are Goans employed on those ferry cruises. You know what? I rather Goans were employed as accountants, administrators, bank officers, human resource managers, sales managers, shop floor managers, than have them serving drinks to flatulent tourists onboard the ferry or singing third rate mandos to them. To each his own dreams eh? The aircraft are brand new hence interiors better than Kuwait air. The starting fare is US dollars 175/-(Rs 8000/-)or Kuwait dinar 50 including taxes(one-way). Which is about half the fare charged by Kuwait airways. The fare increases for the next block of 10/20 seats. Hence book early for lower fares Booking (rates displayed)can be done through internet (you save KD 5/-) http://book.jazeeraairways.com Being a no-frills airline, free food is not served. A sandwich costs KD1 and fruit juice 250 fils, Tea/Coffee 500 fils and mineral water is free which is a little more than double the cost on land in Kuwait. 20 kg of checked in baggage and 6 kg of hand baggage is allowed free. The in flight attendants were mostly Goan girls and they even conversed/joked with the passengers, some even in Konkanni !!, unlike Kuwait airways. Currently the flights to Mumbai are full while the ones to Kuwait are half full which implied that while returning to Kuwait some passengers carried (and were allowed) much much more than the excess 6 kg hand baggage in the aircraft. Also their hand baggage was not weighed, both ways. Their arrival and departure were about 30 minutes earlier then scheduled. Dear Goanetites, Like to acknowledge this platform which has made it so easy to discuss and come out with ideas. We need to use this platform to brainstorm and come up with ideas where we goans reform to be the spine of Goa* in Goa* and extend this to where ever we are in various cities toens and villages across the globe. We can begin by all of us across boundaries send in ther ideas. For the implementation part form a team coordinating in Goa. All of us set the ball rolling and we need to be on the field to play this game. We could contribute in whatever small way we can from where we are. Lets stop to use this phrase " Goa going going gone... Similar to the way the media has been " Mumbai Spirit " .and blah blah BE careful how we use words, language. these words get into the system and becomes reality in the long run. So let take care of what we say and lets get cracking. One gr8 step is that we have the statistics, the facts and figures. The thought process has begun amonst us which is gr8 and so is the intention i can feel it. We now begin by all of us across boundaries send in their ideas. For the implementation part we could form a team coordinating in Goa. First lets ask ourselves the right questions ? The right questions will take us to the necessary goal. I have a few Questions simple question we can ask ourselves and contribute with our ideas: Do we really want to do something for the betterment of Goa ? Is our intentions strong ? What possibilities are we Goans creating for goa ? Where does Goa ( we) stand now ? Where does Goa ( we) have to go from here ? whats the gap ? How do we ( Goa) bridge the gap ? SO now what steps to take ? What benchmark do we set ? What actions need to be carried out ? All this in continuous periodic manner. So let take care of what we say and lets get cracking. One gr8 step is that we have the statistics, the facts and figures. The thought process has begun amonst us which is gr8 and so is the intention i can feel it. We need to work out a plan in Form, Distance, Time to see the Reality. We need to visualise and dream what type of Goa we are looking at in the years to come, maybe 5 years from now. Thereafter again rethink and plan for the next 5 years and so on. We could define the time frame as 5 or 3 or 10 ... Let stop worrying about wheher it will happen. Lets brainstorm and bring all ideas together, the intention of everyone put together is a very powerful system. It will create the means to realise our dreams. It should be a powerful prayer. We should have specialists in their respectiive fields vision out, contribute for each segment. we then consolidate and create teams in each respective area to be developed and implemented in an organised manner in goa. State, District, Local Panchayat level, wado level whichever way seems appropriate ITS POSSIBLE. Who am I I am a possibility and stand for Responsibility, Harmony and Peace for this mission. Sales, PR and Marketing is my Profession. Coordination and bringing people together are my Skills. Singing, dancing and Communication are my Talents. My Goal in life is to be a friend, supporter and above all a human being. Hope you guys will support and help me be part of our Mission. Thank you. Confirm your bookings early or miss-out Visit http://www.garcabranca.com for details/booking/confirmation. MONDAY MUSE (24 July 2006) SPEAK WITH CAUTION The dastardly serial-bomb attacks on Mumbai and Srinagar have distressed everybody. The actions of disturbing peace underline the anti-humanity attitudes of terrorists. No rationale can justify the killing of innocents. The attacks on our civilization must be fought with determination and solidarity. The concern is reflected in the many messages we receive on our cellular phones and e-mail. However, sometimes we receive a totally misguided missive and here is an attempt to clear the thought pollution. Every XYZ (referring to a religious community) is not a terrorist but why is every terrorist a XYZ? Awaken India! The above short message is long on dangerous rhetoric which needs to be challenged and countered immediately. Just consider the assassinations of Mahatma Gandhi, Abraham Lincoln, JFK, Indira Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi and other famous leaders. What religion did the killers belong to? Is it logical to cast prejudiced accusations on a person, just because he belongs to the same religion as the terrorist? It is pertinent to note that this loose talk is corrupting our thinking which eventually provokes actions. Surely, such talk too can be described as verbal terrorism for it murders basic human values and discriminates against fellow human beings. One day, we may be stopped in our tracks by a maniacal mob and be confronted with the questions Whats your religion? Same as ours? Or different like theirs? And our lives will depend on our answers and their religion! We must ask ourselves whether we have learnt any lessons from the numerous killings, brutal attacks and rapist rioting, born of divisive religious fanaticism Lets refrain from bigoted, intolerant and partisan talk For it is the spiteful talk that inspires the spiteful walk We must be sensitive and sensible in every spoken reaction Combating terrorism needs us to speak through action! The article by Andrew Dias from Singapore pinpoints one major problem in our schools and that is absolutely lack of counselling; I am personally not far out from Andrew academically, but professionally life is quite different. Children sometimes develop late and in India academic performance is what is all about. We all seem to be trained to work for others. As far as practical training is concerned I had tried to get admission in St Vincent's technical school in Poona but the priest in charge would not bother to talk or provide a form for admission. In actual life the practical hands on approach pays much better and very much in demand. I hope that all the schools in our villages have ITI institutions where children can take a more practical approach to their studies than the dreadful thought of going through exams and obtaining marks that are very low and degrees on subjects where they do not have any aptitude. WORLD GOA DAY -2006 - message 000 Dear Rene, It gives me great pleasure on behalf of Margao-Net to congratulate all Goans the world over on this 7th Anniversary of World Goa Day. It goes without saying that it was only after your persistent efforts that this came about. This is a very important day for Goans for it gives them an opportunity to reflect on this day on who they are, their great cultural and historic heritage and to teach and pass on to the next generation the great Goan traditions orally. Furthermore, the Day also affords an opportunity to Goans outside Goa to gather and come together to exchange views, news and to partake of Goan delicacies which are made on such special occasions. Your idea of an Alliance of World Goan Organisations is long overdue and will go a long way to unite and gather the Goans on one platform. Margao-Net fully supports your efforts and will fully cyber-support you to achieve this goal. You may add Margao-Net as one of the first members of the Alliance of World Goan Organisations (AWGO). Warm regards and all the best. Please let me refer to the following statement of Fred in his posting on the subject: "PS: My only regret is that we have hardly any people of a Christian background who are taking on the communalists within their own community. And there are many; who often assume you can't be communal simply because one belongs to a minority religion!" With my experience in Mumbai, this is common here too. In the end the whole programme of anti-communalism ends up with talking only about Hindu communalism.
