Re: [Goanet] Viva Goa - What's your Goal?
Helga, I read your comment -- 3) Invite Goan Hindus who could contribute their culture and their delicious food. Speaking to some young Gonadians I got the impression that they did not think Goan Hindus were Goan! The perception that all Goans are Catholic is prevalent not just among the 'Gonadians', but among almost all Indians in North America. The moment I introduce myself as coming from Goa, I automatically become Catholic! I have had to tell many, that there are more Hindus in Goa than Catholics and that we even celebrate festivals like Diwali and Ganesh Chaturthi! As regards inviting Hindus to a Catholic function, I don't quite know how that will work out. There are Goan associations and conventions in North America, but they have always been disjoint. Hindu association had its convention in Chicago this year in July and in Toronto 2 years earlier. Almost every place has a Catholic Association and a Hindu one! About a decade ago, an effort was made in the New York/NJ area to invite Goan Catholics to the annual Hindu picnic, and many did attend. Somehow, during subsequent years no such thing happened. [Goanet] 'Cooperage is not a football ground'
'Cooperage is not a football ground' By: Ashwin Ferro http://ww3.mid-day.com/sports/local/2006/august/142498.htm Mumbai’s Cooperage ground may boast of a century old history of football, but if a couple of Goan coaches whose teams are playing this year’s National Football League (NFL), are to be believed, it’s anything but a football field. “Cooperage is not a football ground,” Clifford Chukwama, coach of Sporting Clube de Goa, told MiD DAY after his team beat reigning Goa League Champions Dempo Sports Club 2-0 in a season-opening charity match at the Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Fatorda on Saturday. Cultural venue “It’s a venue for all other cultural activities except football. And this is because the authorities there aren’t serious about the game,” added Chukwama. It may be recalled that the opening matches in Mumbai of the NFL last season had to be shifted to Goa due to poor ground conditions at the Cooperage as it had been given out for a wedding, days before kick-off. This threw the tournament’s schedule into complete chaos, with matches being re-scheduled and cancelled at the drop of a hat. Even after NFL matches finally took place at the venue the green top was nowhere in sight, replaced instead by an uneven slush brown surface. Dempo Sports Club coach Armando Colaco too is far from impressed with Mumbai ’s only NFL venue. “Mumbai is not serious about football, because if you want to see good football you must have good grounds and the Cooperage is far from good. And this has been its state for the last few years now. Nothing seems to have changed at the Cooperage except its officials,” complained Colaco. The truth “This is not to take away anything from Mahindra United but the truth is that if they would have played last year’s Federation Cup at Cooperage, they would have never won it,” added Colaco. Colaco also said that he would be taking a big risk if he were to play his expensive players in Mumbai. “Nowadays, with the traditional studs having been replaced by blades underneath, whenever a player makes a 360 degree turn on a slushy field, his boot tends to remain where it is, while the the leg turns in the direction of the body, thus resulting in ankle injuries. Comment: Its a pity that Mumbai doesnt have a good football ground... Edward Verdes ___ Goanet mailing list Goanet@lists.goanet.org http://lists.goanet.org/listinfo.cgi/goanet-goanet.org

Would you also please advise us in whose name the 'patent', 'copyright' etc has been registered ...and when?. 2: re: 'economy with the truth' and Goans: Thus far, it has been my experience that the Goans I know well, are pretty straightforward with me. I can only offer my sympathies if that has not been your experience with Goans. 3: re: 'Theft': I believe that most common law jurisdictions will require atleast Appropriation in the Actus Rea, Dishonesty as part of the Mens Rea for it to be a theft. And that (I submit again) would be an objective test based upon a Ghosh direction. Would you agree? Are you saying that the 5 (I believe) prerequisites for Theft have been met wrt to the WGD idea? So, If I may ask again ...From WHOM was this IDEA of WGD appropriated ? 4: re: Sardars and levity: It is my personal (unlearned) opinion that in many civilian jurisdictions, Racial/Ethnic comments attract special attention when it comes to 'sentencing'. Do you agree? 5: re: Toronto Goanetters WGD lunch and the money raised for Konkani: I can only say Shabash. Yes, ULO is moving to the centre. India, as you know, is a land of field hockey, a land that produced the Hockey Wizard Dhyan Chand. He was the inspiration for his next generation, which produced geniuses like K. D. Singh Babu, Leslie Claudius, Balbir Singh et al. Born in an Anglo-Indian community, Leslie became a permanent member of the team from the1948 Olympics to the 1960 Olympics, where he captained the Indian Olympic team. Our documentary is a nostalgic journey with Leslie through the beautiful game of hockey. His reminiscences of the Olympics are something exceptional to hear. Leslie opens out his personality, his philosophy of hockey and his ideals of a sportsman's life, which he thinks is the best thing on earth. We started our shooting from Bilaspur in Central India, where he was born. He then came to Calcutta and settled here. Initially, he was a football player played for the Calcutta Port Trust. But then he shifted to the beautiful game of hockey for his club team and from here itself he played for the Indian team at the Olympics from 1948 to 1960. Leslie's name was in the Guinness Book of World Record as the four consecutive Olympian in the World. He has achieved 3 Olympic Gold medals (1948 to 1956) and Silver (1960) where he was the captain the team. It was truly a sad moment for him, being the captain of the Indian team that loses to Pakistan for the first time in an Olympics. There are few clippings of old Olympic Games, and the Indian team playing at the Olympics. These were taken from the archives of Government of India. The film includes Leslie, at the age of 75, his personal moments, his memoirs of the Olympics, his sharing views with Keshav Dutt, Leslie in different moods (Singing songs/ playing veterans hockey), his relationship with the Kolkata Maidan, interviews with Gurbux Singh, P. K. Banerjee, Leander Paes and Sourav Ganguly, Leslie's childhood at Bilaspur, his school, memoirs of Leslie's teacher (she is now 95 years old), Leslie's nostalgic moments in Bilaspur. The meeting was held at 8.00 p.m. and attended by friends, colleagues and well wishers of Johny Suratkal including Mangaloreans namely Ms Ida the vice president of Kuwait Canara Welfare Association and Lawry Pinto ex president of KCWA. Everyone who attended the condolence meeting expressed his/her view on Johny Suratkal saying that he was the genuine Konkani lover and kind hearted man. Fidelis Fernandes the president of Konkani Heritage Kuwait speaking first eulogized Johny Suratkal for his enormous contribution in the development and promotion of Konkani in Kuwait and assured any help to keep Johny's memory alive. He also assured his assistance on behalf of KHK and also on his personal behalf in case any move is made to help his family back home in Mangalore. Similarly Elvino Rodrigues the President of Kuwait Konknni Kendr in his speech highlighted the plus points of Johny Suratkal towards his cooperation to KKK in the promotion of Konkani language. Ms Ida disclosed her personal rapport with Johny Suratkal who was one of the founders of KCWA and how he enjoyed working closely with the departed soul in the promotion of activities towards the cause of community. Lawry Pinto a very close friend and associate of Johny Suratkal expressed his deep sorrow over this sudden death. Just returned from Mangalore where he went to attend to the funeral of Johny Suratkal, Lawry described the entire proceedings during the funeral and assured the gathering that something will be done to help his family. I personally feel such sincere and dedicated activists and genuine Konkani lovers who neglected their personal and family affairs and embraced their ideological activities should not be ignored. It is the duty of the community to assist Johny Suratkal's family in whatever way they can since Johny Suratkal was the only bread winner. Rosary Ferns renowned Tiatrist and singer with tears in his eyes disclosed how deeply he was shocked to know the death of Johny Suratkal and in case any move is done to help his family back home, he said his contribution will be there. [Goanet] What is true religion ?
Christianity is the religion founded by Jesus Christ by shedding his precious and divine blood. The life and teaching of Jesus is written in the Bible. Many people are inspired by the words in the Bible. God has given us an inspiring force, which will help us to understand the word of God. The word was with God and the word was God, and the word became flesh and dwelt among us. The entire Gods kingdom can be understood by us if God wants to revel Himself to us. One must know that God is not created nor destroyed. He is the alpha and the omega and has no mother or father. He is He into Himself. It is wrong to make a human being the mother of God. Secondly God does not allow any one either in this world or elsewhere to be equal to Him. Even though Jesus was the human form of God, he never called himself God but said that he was a son of man. Our clergy has deviated from the truth and now they find themselves caught between the devil and the deep sea that they are trying very hard to keep the flock together. They do not want by all means t o visit the other Christian churches to hear the word of God for they know like a politician who with his lies can keep the voters closer to him, the clergy has used Mary as an weapon to keep the flock the golden geese together by telling the people that the protestant bible is incomplete, that the pastors are fake etc etc. How long will this go on? [Goanet] Hitler, Catholicism and ...A Disappointing Surprise at the End
Hi Cornel, Sorry for the long delay in responding to your post concerning Hitler and the Catholic Church. I appreciate the effort you have made in organizing your data and the time spent in writing it for those of us who have been following this thread. Allow me to respond to your points with comments interspersed between them. A little bit of business first: I am not a Catholic and am not naturally biased in favour of Rome. 1. Since the beginning, Nazism and Catholicism had a peculiar co-existence. Hitler was a baptized Catholic and so were several of his henchmen including Joseph Gobbels. Neither ever formally left the Church and are on record for dutifully paying church taxes until their deaths in 1945. Catholicism has had a peculiar co-existence with several movements and individuals. It has been far from an apolitical organization; however, I hesitate to equate its relationships with an endorsement, much less an official imprimatur of any kind. 2. The Nazis under Hitler's leadership were faced with a country where the overwhelming majority considered themselves to be Christian. There were Protestants in the north and Catholics in the south. Consequently, Hitler had to build his power-base on this reality. We're getting into very loosely defined territory, Cornel. You should know that the word Christian in, say, America or England, means something quite different than it means in India or Lebanon. In India, calling oneself a Christian is often a way of saying that one is not a Hindu or Muslim. Differences of language and culture have developed over hundreds of years based largely on religious identities to the point that the culture has superseded the practice of religion as a social identifier. For example, in the part of the USA where I live ask someone what he thinks about Catholics and the response you are likely to get is beer, babes, and picnics. This is broadly called cultural Catholicism and is very distinct from Roman Catholic religion and practice. For purposes of this discussion I must separate the two. So far in this argument you have not presented evidence that the groups you describe above are indeed religious Catholics. 3. Hitler as a person was critical of the Catholic Church at many times but Hitler as the politician was fully aware that to achieve political success he would particularly need to win votes from the Catholic (mainly centrist) parties with whom he had much resonance. This he did assiduously by working co-operatively with the Catholics. He was, throughout his career, pragmatic about religion. He is on record as saying that, If my mother were alive, she would definitely be a churchgoer and I wouldn't want to hinder her. On the contrary, you've got to respect the simple faith of the people. You have rightly called him a pragmatic man, and there's a sharp distinction between a pragmatic person and one whose actions are based on deeply held personal beliefs (borrowing Edward Kennedy's euphemism for conservative, vote 'no'). You are illustrating my point that he was not really a practising Catholic but one of convenience. 4. Hitler was NOT brought up as an atheist nor as an agnostic but as a well-brought up Catholic. Never being an atheist, as some wish he were, so as to distance him from Catholicism out of sheer embarrassment, Hitler grew up in a religion and culture that was anti-semitic and inclined to persecute Jews because of the belief that they had killed Christ. Hitler thus repeatedly proclaimed that, he was doing the Lord's work. Cornel, I need to clarify something--I have neither described Hitler as an atheist nor a devout Catholic. Concerning his proclamation about doing the Lord's work, you seem quite eager to use this as another evidence that he was indeed a devout Catholic, yet it's so typical of politicians to tell people exactly what they want to hear. A few weeks ago in the UN general assembly the Israeli ambassador leaned over to the Lebanese ambassador and said something to the effect of Let's admit it, we're doing what you really would like to do...we're doing you a favour (or words to that effect). Do you believe the Israeli ambassador? Were Israeli bombings in Southern Lebanon carried out on behalf of Lebanon? Yet, you chalk up Hitler's Lord's-work quote as one more piece of proof that he was a devout Catholic merely because he said so. At a Christmas celebration in 1926, Hitler said Christ was the greatest early fighter in the battle against the world enemy, the Jews. The work that Christ started but could not finish, I, Adolf Hitler will conclude. You really seem to take Hitler at his word. This is a spectacular contradiction of Jesus' own words. Jesus came as a Saviour/Messiah to His own people, Hitler tried to exterminate them. Jesus came as a Jew, to Jews. He also instructed His disciples to speak to the lost sheep of the house of Israel, the Jews, in Matthew 10:5-6. Do you, in all intellectual honesty, believe

I regret to inform you Francis that you might be right about arguing with me. It is indeed Thanklessespecially when You cannot defend an accusation you make against another. It is also a way out or as some may call it 'an escape clause' I will assume - based on the discussion we have had thus far - that unless proved otherwise: 1: You (Francis) do NOT have ANY Claim (on your behalf or that of another) with regards to being the founder and originator of the World Goa Day idea. 2: You have falsely accused Rene of Theft (and I'm sure you know what that means) of the founder and originator of the World Goa Day idea If anyone else had made that accusation, it would have been excusable. But ...you are a lawyer. Surely you know what entails the IP claims and Theft accusations. Do you not? Hence unless you submit the Proof of Theft or withdraw this accusation, it is indeed pointless continuing this controversy with jc. Since jc did not start it, it is NOT up to jc to end it. [Goanet] 506th aniversary of FIRST MASS AT ANJEDIV island on 22/08/1500
Exactly 506 years ago on 22nd August 1500 the first HOLY MASS was celebrated on the Island of Anjediva area 340 075 hectares of Canacona taluka near Binaga in Karwar. Later this Island became a part of Goa when some of the Novas Conquistas Talukas came under Portuguese rule ---now it has been granted on 8/12/1987 to the Indian Navy (the seventh largest Navy in the world) for its Sea Bird project INS KADAMBA however it is still a part of Goa as it has not been ceded till this date by an Act of Parliament. It was Rev Fr Henrique de Coimbra a Portuguese native and eight other Franciscans who had anchored at this Island that celebrated the FIRST Mass in a small non-descript chapel. The small structure of a Chapel was eventually raised to what is now the Our Lady of Springs Nossa Senhora de Brotas or affectionately called by hindus and catholics alike Zorinche Saibinn . It is the first Church built in 1506 by the Portuguese in India (2nd Church built is the St Catherine of Old Goa nearly 10 years later) much before the birth of St Francis Xavier and 156 years before the Taj Mahal was built. Later it was partially re-built in 1682, the present ediffice was built in 1729. In the 16th century the Pope conferred on it the status of the Mother Church. Its side altars bear the insignia till this date. The Church is a historical archaeological and a living momument where Holy Mass is celebrated periodically and hence denial of access by the Navy amounts to denial of right to practice one's religion. The Defence Ministry is now contemplating opening up the Island for the feast of St Francis de Assisi on 4th October 2006 -(and next on 2 February 2007 for the feast of Our Lady of Springs (Brotas) Though this Chapel a little away from Our Lady of Springs (Brotas) Church it is now in partial ruins. ( see picture of this writer in the ruined Chapel on www.colaco.net) It is the callousness of the Archdiocese of Goa Daman, Archbishop Emeritus Dr Raul Niclau Gonsalves who then failed to reprimand the Naval authorities to maintain the sanctity of these structures as was agreed under the terms of grant of the Island by the Goa Government to them in 1987. Even to this date it was courtesy this writer that the historical island -- site of the Church, the Chapel the Martyrs Memorial, (in memory of the six Indian soldiers shot on 22nd December 1961 as the Portuguese did not realise that Goa was liberated on 19th December, 1961 ) 44 canons lying there which is the corner stone of the history of the advent of the Portuguese to Goa in 1510 has been put into international focus for the highandedness of the Indian Navy towards civilian sensitivities under a seemingly false threat perception theory which ironically appears insignificant today given that the 9/11 bombings showed how one could penetrate through the defence surveillance of the worlds most powerful nation the United States of America. As Goan Catholics world over commemorate this memorable day in the spread of Christianity in the State this writer pleads with all the powers that be to do their bit in moving the forces that would see that the sanctity of the Church the Chapel and the historicity of the Anjediva Island is preserved as a vital link in our Goan history. It is also hoped that the Member of Parliament Mr Shantaram L Naik who at the behest of this writer raised the issue on the floor of the Lok Sabha in and demanded that the Catholic faithful be allowed on the Island to celebrate the customary feasts also ensure that due preparedness is intiated by the Defence authorities to repair the Chapel of St Francis de Assisi to facilitate the celebration of the Holy Mass on 4th October 2006. It also needs to be protected under the Ancient Monuments and Archaelogical Sites and Remains Act 1958 which act came into effect in Goa from 15.8.1963, but for reasons unknown the same did not find mention in the list. The then Station Commander Commodore B R Rao has m isled the then Defence Minister Mr George Fernandes that there were many temples shifted from the island and therefore Mr Fernandes felt it was only appropriate that a uniform policy be followed and hence prohibited the feasts to be celebrated there. However this was proved false with documented evidence by this writer and hence the Defence Ministry is now compelled to honour the terms of the grant of the island as in 1987 and 1988. Radhakrishnan Nair wrote: Well, Cecil, we're all bisexuals. We all have a feminine and musculine side. Afaik, Hinduism is the only religion that recognises this scientifically proven fact. The concept of 'Ardhanaariswara' (a half-woman diety, one of the forms of Lord Shiva) is based on this fact. Cecil Pinto replies: Please note that the concept of a trans-gender or bisexual God exists in many religions, not just Hinduism. The Norse God Odin was bisexual in nature, in fact changing gender as per the occasion. The ancient Egyptian God Atum was also regarded as being bisexual and in fact is addressed as the Great He-She, 'the complete one'. Greek mythology in fact abounds with bisexual Gods. Apollo is known for having sexual relationships with men. Hyacinth was one of his lovers. Pan, the Greek patron god of shepherds and god of nature, is famous for his sexual prowess with both maidens and young male shepherds. How do we raise children to be part of that culture? Do we even want to? Mario observes: Helga, Is keeping our Goaness alive really important for those who have emigrated irrevocably and are putting down roots in another country and culture? However, it probably should be for those who plan to return to Goa some day - though you can probably forget about their kids. It's hard enough keeping our gonads intact if you know what I mean, especially in Goanada:-)) The Do we even want to? is the crux of the matter, isn't it, and who gets to make that decision? You, or your progeny? Secondly, how far do we go? The question is are we emotionally Goans first or Gonadians or Gomericans or Gossies or GoZeas or whatever our new nationalities are? Aren't the essentially immigrant populated countries named above different in terms of ease of assimilation when compared to the traditional countries? From my personal American experience, I think they are, while they also allow those that choose to to not assimilate, which I consider a tremendous burden on the future generations and their almost certain multi-cultural blood lines. Those that work so hard to continue to be what they used to be tend to also be those who complain the most about not being accepted within their new environments. I honestly don't think one can have it both ways without paying some kind of price. The traditional Caucasian immigrants to the immigrant populated countries don't think of themselves in terms of their country of origin. Even those who can trace their multi-cultural origins after a few generations mention it as a matter of fact and not of cultural or national identification. Most American and Canadian Caucasians whose families emigrated three or four generations ago are just as proudly a fraction of this and a fraction of that, but primarily proudly American or Canadian. One can't tell a second generation African-American apart from an African-American whose ancestors were slaves. It seems like mostly those of Latin and Asian descent carry the separatist sentimental baggage, the defiantly split loyalties and identities. Why is this? Does the sour Indian-African experience of fierce refusal to assimilate that led to severe resentment by the locals and eventual eviction, at least from Uganda, have a lesson in there somewhere? The Carribean Indians and the South African Indians know intellectually that they are descended from Indians, but they don't identify emotionally with India. What about our children? Do we want to impose our own sentimental baggage on them and make them feel even more different than they are already, most trying to assimilate into their new environments and the totally different cultural mores and expectations? Why did we emigrate and put down roots somewhere else if we wanted to be the same as we always were? Are we kidding ourselves that our second and third generation American and Canadian descendants are Goans and/or Indians in their hearts and minds? What happens after we're gone? I know one thing for sure. The third generation American Goveias are already Indo-Europeans by bloodline, and in another couple of generations the American Goveias will be a fraction of this and a fraction of that just like any other Americans, and with some luck know that some of their ancestors once came from a beautiful piece of heaven on earth called Goa. That's just the way it is with us. How about you? ___ Goanet mailing list Goanet@lists.goanet.org http://lists.goanet.org/listinfo.cgi/goanet-goanet.org
Re: [Goanet] Why Condoms Will Never Stop AIDS in Africa
I think ideological propaganda is unconscionable, irresponsible and dangerous, especially in regards to a grave public health-related issue such as this one. Abstinence, fidelity and condoms are all very important in preventing the spread of HIV/AIDS. The roles played by these commonsensical measures are quite obvious, as are their limitations. Advice to abstain from sexual activity outside of marriage would be great if followed, but is quite obviously impractical because of low compliance. It is also utterly impractical, and perhaps, cruel, within marital relationships, wherein one spouse is HIV-positive, as Josebab has pointed out elsewhere. In such a case, use of the condom is a very valid option. Condoms and other forms of contraception are also useful in preventing pregnancies when a woman has AIDS, and maternal-to-fetal transmission is a possibility, irrespective of whether her male partner has HIV/AIDS or not. Please see one of the links below for information about the scientific evidence for condom effectiveness in AIDS prevention. Hi, The Ten Commandments, The Sermon on the Mount etc mentioned in the mail below is not only for Catholics but for all Christians. Bible is the foundation for any Christian denomination. We as Catholics have a bible with 73 Books, but the other Christian denominations have only 66 books in their Bible, 7 are missing. Last time on my vacation, on one of the day, there was a reading from the book of Sirac, and I could not find it anywhere in the bible I had, it was king James version, and hence had to refer it on my sisters Bible a Catholic bible. As for Mario's Query, I am not sure of the cursing, but Mathew 5:34-37 says But I tell you, do not swear at all: either by heaven for its God's throne, or by earth for it is the city of the great king. And do not swear by your head, for you cannot make even one hair white or black. Simply let your Yes be Yes and You No No. Anything beyond this comes from the evil one. I wonder why the Six books are missing in the other bibles. Can someone explain? You are also a Goanet proponent of the safe sex fantasy. But I'll bet you YOU don't chase the HIV/AIDS virus. Aren't you being incredibly patronizing and contemptuous of those who do by insinuating they cannot do what YOU can do? So, what makes YOU so special and different in 2006. Bosco writes: One reason naive people are discouraged from this common sense approach is the siren song by extreme left wingers, and their drumbeat of insidious and deadly messages that there is something called safe sex outside the boundaries of common sense. RESPONSE: Is this the best you can do? Are you now going to classify medical and allied professionals that work everyday with people infected with HIV/AIDS into left-wing/right-wing. Mario responds: It's a lot better than what you are doing, playing word games and deflecting from the honest methods by which one can avoid contracting this deadly disease. And, yes, it is a right wing/left wing issue, and the entire left wing approach which is based on blatant falsehoods about safe sex is what is causing this pandemic to skyrocket. Bosco writes: The fact is that countries like Uganda that emphasize abstinence and monogamous relationships are having far greater success in the war against HIV/AIDS RESPONSE: I can see why you raised the issue of Uganda - the usual spin. Because of criticism of US policy. According to Stephen Lewis, the UN Special Envoy for HIV/AIDS in Africa, there is no question that the condom crisis in Uganda is being driven and exacerbated by PEPFAR and by the extreme policies that the administration in the United States is now pursuing. Mario responds: Shortage of CONDOMS? Why haven't the Gonadians filled the shortage, since they are not spending hardly anything on defense? Don't you all know how to make CONDOMS? Why does the US have to do everything? How about the shortage of COMMON SENSE? Condoms are better than doing nothing, but it is a blatant falsehood to describe the use of condoms as safe sex because they have to be of the right material, used very carefully and consistently and THEN they are SAFER, never SAFE, against such a virus. Those who chase the virus with such determination are the last people to take the best precautions. [Goanet] Enjoying Goan delicacies
Enjoying Goan delicacies by Ervell E Menezes FOOD, glorious food, is the chorus of most who visit this enchanted place, beginning with the hippies. Ever since the domestic tourist has matched the 'firangi' or foreign tourist to eat as much as he can. Restaurants sprang up, where originally there were only shacks, and today there are more restaurants in Goa than stars in the sky where quite often one is able to sample good food. But the secret is to find the good restaurants before they become big and bad. Also, many of them provide a variety of cuisine which means a good mix of all the masalas and Goan cuisine is often the casualty. Then there are others who mix song and dance with food. There was the Haystack in Arpora in the 1990s where Remo sang on a certain day in the week and folks came essentially to hear him. The food was secondary. Likewise, Titos in Baga-Calangute, also in North Goa, which was a six-table restaurant in the 1970s has today graduated into a huge, three-levels music place, more to be seen than to see or eat. It's the place to be in for the Mumbaikars, especially the 'page 3' folks. The latest in that line is Francisco Fanquit Martins Sweet Chillie in Candolim. Fanquit is known as the cultural king of Goa he has won numerous awards for the Republic-Day parade in New Delhi and the Carnival in Goa. But here too it is music before food, obviously. Like most restaurants in Goa they have a variety of cuisine, moghlai, Chinese and Goan. Few stick to Goan cuisine which is what quite a few visitors would like to sample. Pork is generally preferred, vinegar is used liberally. Sorpotel and vindalo are favourites. So is sea food like mussels, oyster, shell-fish (tisrio) and the like. Chicken caffreal is another popular dish which has its origin in Portuguese Africa. Florentine in Saligao may not be the cleanest place to dine in but its caffreal is a winner and costs only Rs 50 a half- plate, so many drop in and take it away in parcels. Some Mumbai parties are known to be serviced by caffreal all the way from Florentine. The capital city of Panjim is known to possess a few family-run restaurants which have been running for three and more generations. There's George Bar and Restaurant near the Panjim Church or Bar Godinho and Restaurant near National Cinema but over the years the quality has deteriorated. But you can stiff get a few good buys. So is the case with Corina's on the waterfront. Venite's a first floor place is still good. Avanti was good in the 1980s but when it shifted to the first floor the prices too shot up and the quality went down in inverse proportion. Horseshoe in the Fontainhas quarter is good but a wee bit expensive but one gets near-five-star service at a lower tariff. In all of Goa the two most popular eating places are Martin's Corner at Betalbatim in South Goa and Britto's in Calangute-Baga. It seems to have overtaken Souza-Lobo's and its next-door neighbour St Anthony's. The roast chicken is delicious and cost around Rs 60. The sea-food platter is also a big draw costing around Rs 190. Cajetan Britto who runs the place for the last two decades is now specialising in yummy-yummy pastries, so much so the newcomers know 'Brittos' mainly for its pastries. There's Starlight on the Arpora-Anjuna road known for its sea food. A rice-thali with fish costs just Rs 30. The shacks that crop up each season are supposed to be cheaper places but it doesn't work that way. Folks who get the licence pass it on to others quite alien to the restaurant business. Many of them deteriorate into rip-off joints to say nothing of their extra-curricular activities, though these can also be attributed to some well known restaurants. The full-moon and rave parties of course are a different kettle of fish, many of them run by foreigners with every succeeding government turning a Nelson's eye to them. O Coqueros in Porvorim in North Goa, where notorious criminal Charles Shobraj was nabbed in the 1980s, is not the shadow of its old self. And would you believe it when it was recently renovated they've had the gal to install a statue of the criminal Shobraj. That's a reflection of the New Goan values. Its latter-day rival casino too has come down a long . In South Goa Seagull in Betul, on the banks of the river Sal, is another popular destination. The ambience is good, especially after sunset. Elton Cairo, is a second-generation restaurateur who went to catering college. He has now realised that he must concentrate on Goan cuisine, especially sea- food. The only exception is fried rice (not Chinese food). Seagull also has rooms which are quite economical. His chicken caffreal costs Rs 65 but he gives the breast portion. Mussels and oysters are other favourites. Then there's Fernando's Nostalgia in Raia, also in South Goa, which has a distinctly Goan flavour with its proprietor being very knowledgeable on Goan cuisine and its preparations.
