The advent of Albert DeSouza is one of the nicest
things that have happened on Goanet. Albert has
written 29 posts last month. Every single one of them
has been a gem. He has calmly, politely and
respectfully expounded his views about his religion
and his own beliefs about various issues without
attacking or belittling others. I wish there were more
Alberts in this forum. I would have then read every
post with "Albert writes" as its subject line,
religiously, as I have done since Albert DeSouza's
debut in this forum.

Albert, I am proud of you.

Cheers,

Santosh

Hello Albert,

Christianity as a religion has existed for around 2000 years. All the
prophets sent prior to coming of Jesus, came only for the Jews, Jesus too
came to the Jews hence called King of the Jews. It was only thru Jesus, that
the Gentiles came to know God. And thru Paul the person as Saul who
prosecuted the than followers of Jesus, himself became a staunch Christian,
and went on teaching about Jesus to all places he went making disciples all
around.

During those days there were no bibles, and hence people believed what was
taught to them and accepted the faith, and so till that time when rebellion
started creeping amongst some for their own benefits.

As far as I know, the protestant faith came only because one king protested
cause he was not allowed to get married the second time, and the people who
were under the king followed the king. Then there are many other sects of
Christianity, like Lutherans, thru Martin Luther of Germany who too had
rebelled, Methodists, etc etc, how they came about is unknown to me,

Coming to Goa amchea ganv gara, it the Portuguese who brought the
Christianity and too, Catholicism, Since than, people have believed the
pulpit, as there was no way of checking what is taught is right or wrong as
there were no Bibles than. And people respected and followed the teachings.
People of then used to respect the priests, and I have myself witnessed this
when Holy communion was given as the last sacrament, the priest would go
with sacristian, with an umbrella covering the blessed sacrament, and people
kneeling when they passed. (which is a rarity now). But what the church said
was the truth for the people and it still is.

Just this year the bible in konkani version has been released, earlier to
that, it was only the New Testament, and hence the Ten commandments that you
talk of or about Genisis, and Exodus, is what people learnt thru the
preaching's of the priest, and followed them without questions, who you now
say as to say your exact words " men might say anything, the listener should
use his common sense and find out who is doing the talking..." well Albert
how can one find out when there was no bible in the language people could
read? And what about those who are illiterate? Our fore fathers only learnt
what was taught to them, and obeyed it, until now. As for Genisis and
Exodus, The Ten Commandments were taught in the catechism class. I wonder
how many even knew of the existence of Bible than. And how many even had the
opportunity to hold it in their hands.

What do you think about all the practices that people practiced all these
450 years plus, were they right or wrong? Someone had written that Indian
Christians do Idol worship because of their ancient Hindu culture, but what
about other countries, like Mexico, Most European countries and also latin
American countrie, and south American countries? I don't think they were
Hindus before they were converted?

I have heard that there are some Christian denominations, pay money for the
people to join their groups. Mind you its not conversion, but just switching
camp. I am not sure how correct it is. Can you shed some light on it?

I liked what you said about prayer in your previous mail, but than what is
wrong to say prayers written by others? In this modern generation, with so
many books published about self help, imagine, even cooking books, one
follows some one else's advices, if not fully but at least partly. Every day
new books are published on self help. Imagine books on HOW TO COMMUNICATE,
MEN ARE FROM MARS AND WOMAN FROM VENUS, HOW TO TALK TO ANYONE, do you think
that is necessary? But still its done.

Cheers

Jerry Fernandes

Celebrating the spirit of Goa

DHNS

On August 20, 1992 the Parliament passed the resolution including Konkani in
the 8th schedule of the constitution, paving the way for eventual statehood of
Goa. In commemoration of this occasion, associations of Goans all over the
world celebrate World Goa Day on or around this date. The Karnataka Goan
Association in Bangalore was formed by the Bangalore residents of Goan origin
with over 1500 members.

This year, the occasion was celebrated on August 25.
During the celebration, women sold colourful handpicked silk scarves- with
lucky numbers on them that won some of the members exciting prizes. Ozzie
Fernandes and the Mascarenhas sisters (Maya, Rhoda and Gina) set the mood for
the evening with songs for the occasion. Lalitha and Fausta Pinto de Menezes,
Bernadette Noronha and Antonia Vaz danced the Mando – the rarely performed
classical Goan dance of yester years, dressed in traditional costumes specially
sourced from Goa. A delicious dinner comprising mutton xacuti, sorpotel,
sannas, paneer recheado, okra caldine, avocado salad, toned down with bebinca,
doce and dodol completed the grand celebration.

Hi Rene

Sorry for the delay in letting you know about this years World Goa Day, but
things have been busy here, managed to do a little celebration - See below...

World Goa Day - August 2006

To celebrate World Goa Day and Children Walking Tall's 2nd Birthday we went to
one of the local slums to keep the children entertained. We took along lots of
fruit and held some very silly games. There were about 60 children who attended
the day. It was during the Ginesh festival so they were all off school. The
games included races, ball skills, dancing (or maybe that was just me?!) Even
some of the parents joined in with the fun. The children loved it as you can
see from the photos the volunteers loved it too!

Hopefully next year we will be able to celebrate World Goa Day at "The Mango
House"...

For what it's worth, may I add that I don't believe in initiating a
new form of cyber-castes. So I claim no special priviledge, when it
comes to posting rights on Goanet. (Sometimes, I am embarassed of
being on the border of violating the four-posts-a-day rule, and
request my fellow moderators to delay some my posts.)

Also I don't believe that quantity is any criteria for judging
content. Someone might send in one post, and that might outweigh the
many posts of others. To be specific, the posts of a Roland Francis
and an Elisabeth/Selma have impressed, as has George Pinto's humour,
the rare Eddie Fernandes find we come across, Domnic Fernandes' lovely
antique bookshelf, and others that might have slipped me on an
under-slept day. (Of course, there's a bias here, in the sense of
appreciating what tallies with my own biases in terms of perspective.
That happens with all of us, doesn't it?)

In defence (if there can be any) of myself, may I point out that:

* Not all my posts are rhetorical responses to the ongoing debate. So
to weight others in the same scale as me is unfair -- to them.
* A number of my posts are cut-and-paste forwards which, to my mind,
seem to be of potential interest to other Goaphiles. Of course, I
don't pretend as if these cut-and-paste excerpts are my own, and try
to source the same adequately.
* And, having an intellectual fling with the idea of Open Access
journals recently has only aggravated this trend. My misbehaviour on
this front on the Goa-Research-Net is a case in point. So I plead
guilty.
* After 11+ years on Goanet (I wasn't there from the start), it dawned
on the slow-learner that is me that the only way to survive Goanet is
to take it lightly sometimes. So, some of my posts tend to be factual
and serious. Others talk straight through the hat, knowing fully well
that quite a few of my readers are going to take me seriously (and
having a quiet chuckle while writing the same, as in the case of this
post.)
* Some of my posts are forwards of my own stories, blog entries, etc
which I've anyway written... out of which I sometimes earn a living.

So please avoid the temptation of comparing Mario unfavourably with
me. I was equally embarassed when Elisabeth (in her bolder, pre-Selma
days) drew resemblances between Che Guvara and me. What an insult, to
Che, I mean. At the most, we can consider ourselves to be keyboard
guerrillas [1], leading a safe middle-class existance! -FN, tuned into

To be fair to the original issue raised here, somewhat offtopic by now
but probably still somewhat relevant because of religious affiliations
of many -- though not all -- Goanetters, is not just whether Hitler
*was* a Catholic.

The debate was more nuanced. Of course, one can understand why it is
being distorted along the way, including by those who spare no chance
ot talk about Islamic Fascism at every slightest opportunity!

We were considering, correct me if I'm wrong:

* Whether Hitler made use of religion.
* Why next to nobody talks about Hitler's religious roots, though an
Osama would obviously benefit from no such luxury.
* Consequently, whether the Catholic Church took a policy of benign
overlooking of Nazism, did what it could to battle it, could have done
much more, or simply itself benefitted from the regime (or a
comination of some of these parts).

In sum, the attempt to reduce this to a "Was Hitler a Catholic" debate
is a way of subverting the issue. FN

To be fair to everyone concerned, I don't think any religion
specifically talks about truncating or distorting quotes. Most
religions were invented (sorry for the choice of words!) in a
pre-quotes era.

For that matter, neither does any political ideology justify the use
of fake quotes... but we know that everyone, from extreme right to
extreme left (not to speak of all those centrist guys who somehow feel
they're morally superior) actually does so.

On a related point, no religion (or political ideology, including
Science-ism) preaches hate. But when it comes to practice... aha,
it's quite another matter.

We can spend a year of Sundays going round and round in circles on
this. Now, how about giving up on flogging this dead horse, since
were're actually getting no-where on it? --FN

PS: While on the subject, don't forget my badgering for quotes.

Kevin,
JoeGoaUK had a fault in his summary.
Anyone, but anyone, can compete for the largest number
of posts on Goanet. Fred, a journalist, managed to out
number Mario this month.

However, what really is important, and Mario will
confirm this, is the number of words in each email.

Fred chooses his words carefully. Mario, oh, never
mind.

#1. You have not answered my question of:
Can anybody who uses the name of Jesus Christ to cuss
be called a catholic?

#2. Albert gave a bio of himself and asked if you
would reciprocate. You have been unable to do so.

Please show us exactly what you are made of.

Hi Frederick,

Thanks for your compliment. The sentiment is mutual.

[Goanet] Goan Students-Avoid Path of Least Resistance - Pursue Path of Persistance Career

Hi Merwyn and Sylvano,

Thanks for your messages. Apparently you both have set fine examples of
career success for others to emulate - not taken the path of least
resistance like many of our fellow AVCkars have done like joining the ships
for a seafaring career after High School or BSc (like your Gao Bhau Joel
Moraes) and then complaining about it. Although no one can play with a
Doctorate degree in Engineering and an IIT career, I did play top level
hockey in India and in the US, inspite of an IIT career. We have had may
distinguished intellectuals/sportsmen in AVC and a proud history. If we
widely promote careers in Engineering, Science and Medicine in AVC and Goa
(as I plan to do in Dec when I am there), many more AVC-kars and Goenkars
will be able to carve exemplary career sucesses for themselves. It is an
awareness issue that we have to get over.
Do you know of other AVCkars - who graduated from IIT ? Why or why not ?
My former roomate in Austin, Tx was Tony Coutinho (ex Milleamvaddo, Cuncolim
and Pune), a very good hockey player who graduated with a B.Tech in EE from
IIT Bombay in 1980 and got Master's degree in Electrical Engineering from
the University of Texas at Austin. When I represented Bombay in the Jr.
Nationals Hockey Tournament in 1975, there were three of us AVC-kars on the
Team : Myself from Baga (Velim), Fullback Leslie Correa (also from Baga
Velim, now resident in N.J.) and Ivan D'Silva (from Velim). You may note
that Ivan's dad Dr. Melchisto D'Silva was a medical doctor from Velim and a
prominent Bombay university athlete in his college days. We have also had
my cousin international hockey goalkeeper John Correa who had completed his
MA and was a bank manager in Central Bank from Velim and Dr. Vece Paes of
(Velim/Assolna) who was a medical doctor and represented India as a
center-half in field hockey. Of course everyone has heard of Vece's son
Leander Paes and his tennis career. Just a few months ago I was in Chicago,
and I met Dr. Avertano Noronha of Assolna a world famous neurologist based
in Chicago who was a prominent hockey goalkeeper during his college days in
Punjab. We have also had two more international hockey goalies from Velim -
Ivor Colaco (Kenya, East Africa) and Jerome Caeiro (ex Reserve Bank,
rpresented India in late 1960s). Salvito D'Cruz of Baga was an executive in
Tatas and played top level soccer for Tatas in the seventies. These are just
a few examples of our prominent AVCkars who slogged it out on the sports
fields and in the classrooms against all adversity and reached the pinnacle
of their careers. I believe they were all not underinformed of career
opportunities,(they did not take the path sof least resistance like joining
the ships for a seafaring career after High School or BSc) and then complain
and blame others about the consequences of a wrong career choice and deter
other AVCkars from pursuing promising careers in science and business. That
has got to stop - because incompetence (as is exemplified by hopeless,
perrennial complaints, ill-worded emails, etc - I am sure happy that Joel
has listened to my suggestions and is having his emails proof-read these
days) will breed more incompetence and will have an adverse effect on or
beloved AVC !
That is why my advice to Joel and all prospective AVC-kar and Goenkar
students is to avoid having any one to play with you career is to avoid the
path of least resistance - pursue the path of persistance towards Masters
and Doctorate degrees in professional fields (engineering, science,
medicine, business administration, etc) and no one will ever be able to play
with your careers. Please let me know of other prominent AVCkars that you
know of.
Best Regards,
Dr. Carmo D'Cruz,
Proud Velkar,
Now, Indian Harbour Beach, Florida.

Carmo,
Joel always wanted to serve the police force in Goa. I know him since
college days. He had the necessary qualifications and dedication to be one,
but political interventions and money power come in the way of many such
dedicated individuals. Sitting there in US im sure u do not have a clue of
how deserving candidates are puhed into oblivion by the chamchas of our
political prostitutes. Many incompetent people are sitting in chairs much
bigger their size since they had enough money to buy them.
