[Goanet] Fr. Anthony Saldanha, S.J. - Patron Saint of St. Peter's Church Altar Boys -RIP

2006-11-05 Thread CARMO DCRUZ
Hi Everyone,

It is with a heavy heart that I have to inform you all of the passing away
of Fr. Anthony Saldanha of St. Peter's Parish, Bandra, Bombay last night. It
was Fr. Saldanha who whipped the St. Peters' Church Altar Boys group into
shape and made them an exemplary Altar Boys' Organization for all the world
to emulate. During my experiences in parishes around the US, I know how much
the altar boys would wish for an administrator like Fr. Anthony Saldanha.

A Goan and a Bardezkar, Fr. Saldanha was a long term resident of Bandra. His
family had a quaint little cottage on St. Cyril's Road.

In testy Bandra, where rivalry between the East Indians and the Goans was
always at an all time high, Fr. Saldanha, who was a part of both worlds
(Goan and long Term Bandra Resident) was the voice of Mediation and
Moderation. He always organized the St. Peter's Altar Boys picnics in
Manori, Vasai etc. (East Indian strongholds) so that we the Goan Altar Boys
of St. Peters would better understand the East Indian guys.

I bet many of the East Indian altar boys at St. Peters did'nt even know that
Fr. Anthony Saldanha was a Goan, because of his fluency in Marathi and his
non-parochial demeanor.

Fr. Saldhana was also a consistent source of Soccour to the old Goans of St.
Peter's Parish. They always were revved up after Sunday Home delivered
Communion or meeting with Fr. Saldanha.

In these days when Goan-East Indian rivalries are flourishing world wide in
far flung places like Australia, Canada and the US, etc. Fr. Anthony
Saldanha's life should be an example for all. I recognition of his devoted,
exemplary service to altar boys, I think we should start a campaign to fast
track him to sainthood as a patron saint of Altar boys the world over. There
amy be a patron Saint of Altar Boys honoured by the Catholic Church, but
whoever he is, he will not have done as much for Altar Boys as much as Fr.
Anthony Saldanha !

Best Regards,

Dr. Carmo D'Cruz,

[Goanet] JUSTICE FOR SPORTSPERSONS.

2006-11-05 Thread A. Veronica Fernandes

JUSTICE FOR SPORTSPERSONS.

This is in reply to Floriano Lobo goasuraj Pratima Gaonkar. (goasuraj) write
up on 29.10.06 in response to my article on the suicides of sportspersons
Angela Gomes and Pratima Gaumkar and harassment to Dr. Susane D’Souza by Goa
Sports Minister Maddkaikar.

Florian I highly appreciate your comments on the said subject. I find in
you and your party someone fighting for the cause of Goa and Goans
dedicatedly. This I have seen with my own eyes. Your party is not like any
other party in Goa that looks only for the election gains. You take up
causes of public interest. I know your efforts to raise funds for Pratima’s
poor mother and while you were raising funds for her, Maddkaikar and others
were sleeping in Goa. What have they done for the poor family members of
Pratima? Why till now the person who has driven Pratima to commit suicide
is not brought to trial? Where are Madkaikar and Congress Party? You said
your “Party will revive the cases into the deaths of Pratima Gaonkar and
Angela Gomes and bring the culprits to book. This is a promise the Party
makes to Sports loving Goa and Goans”. I and innumerable friends of mine
support you and your party on this subject and if necessary I will stand by
you on this issue. The two suicides of Angela Gomes and of Pratima Gaumkar
must be probed and guilty not only exposed but also punished.

About Dr. Susane D’Souza, she was my colleague at St. Xaviers College Mapusa
for 4 years and also at Post Graduate Center Panjim. Besides a very good
student throughout her academic career, she was an outstanding sportsperson
and was a champion athlete in High Jump. She did very well even at All
India level. She played number of games and participated in many athletics
events at School, College, Goa and National levels. She possessed high
moral character and was a disciplined girl during those days maintaining her
high integrity. Madkaikar has no reason to punish her because Dr. Susane
will not merit any such action from her superiors because of her high morals
and other high grade characteristics. She has devoted so much of her
youthful life for the cause of Goan sports and for such a person to punish
in this way is a crime. SAG and Madkaikar will have to answer this question
during the election time which is due shortly. I have already spoken to many
of the people in Madkaikar’s constituency and they have also vowed to make
this issue during the election time. I will also speak to Nirmala Sawant to
make this as an election issue during the forthcoming election. Nirmala
Sawant was an opponent of Mudkaikar during the last election. Three days
back I called Tiatrist William de Curtorim to tell him to sing another song
hitting hard Madkaikar for being revengeful towards Dr. Susane. Earlier in
one song William praised Madkaikar and made him unnecessarily popular. Not
only Dr. Susane but her great father Joviniano and her younger sister
Yolanda brought laurels to Goa and Goans thru sports. Her father was once
one of the top Goan footballers in Goa and also in Bombay while playing for
Tatas. Arpora School during those days rarely produced such a gigantic and
brilliant athlete and footballer. He was the pride of Arpora School then.
His was one of the photos adorned the Display Wall of Arpora School during
those days. Only the photos of outstanding sportsmen of Arpora School were
displayed that time.

Yolanda Dr. Susane’s younger sister was also a good athlete and a top
footballer representing Goa and even captaining Goan team. Dr. Susane’s
family members have given so much for the cause of Goan sports and to treat
such a person shabbily by Madkaikar is like committing a crime which should
not go unforgiven. I thought people from Calangute will raise this issue
forcefully in Goa when their own daughter was treated shabbily by Madkaikar
but surprised no saner voice came out from anyone in Calangute. Earlier
Calangute was known to raise its voice for justice but now no, because the
villagers of those days fighting for justice are no more in that village
now, it looks. Florian Bab you said in your reply that “Needless to say
that the Party is distressed at the way Dr. Suzane D'Souza has been
humiliated at the hands of the SAG and now the untimely death of Angela
Gomes. That Dr. Suzane D'Souza had to knock at the doors of the High Court
of Bombay at Goa to rectify the injustice over her emoluments is another
thing altogether. Who are these guys who treat our persevering Goan athletes
in this manner? The people of Goa and largely the sporting
fraternity in Goa must make it a point to read the Chapter X (at Page 62) of
the Party's ROAD MAP FOR GOA under Sports Leisure”. Florian Bab, I have
read your Road Map for Goa and am sure you will fight for justice not only
to Dr. Susane, Angela Gomes and Pratima Gaumkar but also to all other such
sportspersons.

Re: [Goanet] Panjim or Panaji

2006-11-05 Thread Frederick \FN\ Noronha
We need to accept that there are different names for the same place in
different languages. Bicholim/Dicholim, Margao/Moddganv (not MADgao),
Chodan/Chorao, Divadde/Divar, Salgaon/Saligao, Haldone/Aldona,
Kankon/Canacona, Kongotte/Calangute. The list goes on.

Of course, you can't just mispronounce a name out of ignorance and
hope to make it the norm. As former Indian minister Maneka Gandhi did
when she told us of her growing up days in Bam-bo-liM (with a stress
on the last M)!

This changes across time too. Candolim is believed to have been
Kand'halli (influenced by the Kannada suffix 'halli' for village... if
one recalls right).

So we have three options: (i) push whatever we see right (given our
historical, political, linguistic, communal biases) (ii) accept what
is obviously wrong, because of all this confusion, and an inability to
face reality (iii) accept that diversity means that the same place
could well have different names for different people.

It works for people too. People know me as Frederick (in journalism),
Rico (since schooldays), Frederico (at Britto's), FN (in some techie
cicles), Freddy (while studying in Berlin) and, gosh, even Fred (a
name I never adopted myself, but was forced to because in 1994 email
systems simply didn't nine-alphabet log-in names on the Unix-based
system I was then using).

It may be late in the day, but I've decided to accept all except the
last name; Goanetters please note :-) FN

Re: [Goanet] Quick reply from Goa NRI Commissioner's office. That's efficiency!

2006-11-05 Thread Roland Francis
Silviano,
Frederick is quite right. Don't be too happy with the quick response.
Lets see what they put into action as opposed to what they mouth. It
may be a classic case of good salesmanship but bad delivery. But I
suppose you rejoice since compared to past experiences, there is at
least salesmanship where there was only lethargy and rudeness before.

I read the Gulf newspapers on-line and compared to what the Kerala
Govt has been doing for its expats, the Goa Govt should be ashamed of
themselves. Kerala offers its NRIs preference for good real estate
opportunities, quick disbursement of remittances, identifies genuine
businesses they could invest in, arranges for smooth burial proceesses
of Keralites dying overseas, takes up legal cases of Keralites
victimised in the Gulf countries and offers poor labourers good
insurance coverage so that their families in Kerala are not
impoverished should the bread earner perish. The list could go on and
on.

We Goans do nothing but talk. The Keralites do nothing but act.

Roland.

[Goanet] MONDAY MUSE: A LITTLE MORE...

2006-11-05 Thread Pravin Sabnis
MONDAY MUSE (6 November 2006)

A LITTLE MORE...

In Don Bosco High School, an Italian priest, Fr Gatti, taught me English in
the tenth standard. He was huge, humourous and a highly effective teacher.
My language skills prospered under his nurturing. Although, he taught me
only for a year, I continued interacting with him for three more years until
he passed away. He had a lasting impact on my life and more specifically to
the way I looked at life. He opened my mind's eyes towards seeing things
around me with a larger and deeper perspective.

During one such interaction, Fr. Gatti asked me, At what temperature does
water boil? Promptly, I replied, 100 degrees centigrade

And at what use can you put this 100 degrees boiling water

To have a bath

Fr. Gatti had a hearty laugh, You will get burnt all over if you bathe with
100 degrees boiling water Chastened and wisened, I spoke, You can make
tea... cook vegetables... boil an egg...

Correct! Now increase the temperature of the water by one degree. What will
happen?

The water will be transformed into steam!

And what use can you put steam to? Fr Gatti queried.

You can run a steam engine... you can run a ship...

Exactly! Fr Gatti interjected, By just increasing the temperature by one
degree, the result is magnified to thousand fold... from boiling a little
egg to moving a huge ship or train.

So often we speak about our frustration that desired results do not flow
from what we believe to be our hundred percent efforts. Our sincerity and
our efforts may be perfect. We are doing everything right... we are on the
right track... but if results are not as desired, surely we need to put in
that extra degree of effort... that extra degree of enthusiasm... that extra
degree of persistence. That extra degree will help us achieve greater goals.
May success not elude us because we have given up even when we are in
striking distance!

A little extra transforms ordinary into extraordinary

Speak through action must be a continuous story!

Regards

Pravin

See pics 'BAILANCHI DADAGIRI GHOU RATNAGIRI by William de Courtorim.
Like Chruchill Alemao Luizinho Faleiro never see eye to eye to each other,
our William de Courtorim also seems similar situation with Lawry ( Osvy).
There were at leat 4 songs (sung by others too) on 'Sacrament' or husband
having affairs etc. At one spoint, William even gave small 'bashonn' saying
Lawry Oswy left their wives ? and that Alfred Rose was the one and only one
Melody King and for these he receive a big round of public applause.
Crowed was about 500.
Tickets were cheap too. Buy 2 and get one free (not really) but Rs. 40 (usaully
rs.60) i.e. two ticket you need Rs.120 but you get 3 for 120 for William de
Curtorim Tiatr. He also said to boycott all tiatr with Rs.60 and this way the
ticket will atomaticlly come down to Rs.40.
He also said his new VCD releasing on 25th Nov.
He also praised Bardexkars more than Saxttikars and majority of actors were
Bardeskars except Maria and her Husband Jack Rodson and another 2.
Strangely, his daughter was not seen acting but saw some one like her at
backstage helping tiatr setting etc.
William sang only three songs. One solo (where he was called back 4 times,
evrytime with his typical on the spot composition), one with Mimicry song
-Voice of Kid Boxer, Young Meneges, Miguel Rod, Robin Vaz, Anthony Mendes etc
and third one being Duo with Hortencio Pereira.

It seems more and more Tiatr are staged abroad now a days.
Mario Menezes Tiatr was scheduled at Dubai on 2nd and 3rd Nov. same hall but
two different tiatr one new and one old.
Next one to tour to Gulf is John D Silva with his DHULL

NEW VCDs released/to Release

JESU by Mini Mario
(it said 'just released in the hand of Fr. Conceidao in the presence of more
than 3000 people (may be at Mandur). It also appears 'all songs VCD' with 12
songs..
More info next time.

MEVONK NA by Minino de Benaulim/Music House
(It says 'Released' withTari, Fatima, Jessica, Agustinho, Joana etc)
More info next time.

CHINTRNAM NUIM SOPNAM (to release Xmas Time)
With Ophelia, Roseferns, Annie, Tari, Dr.Kiran, etc etc
It is not by 'Jessie' as I thought earlier. Her name does not even appear in
the list or too tiny ad which is even very hard to read. it also appears that
this film, initially, available to screen at various places.

However, there is still no sign of EKSURO by Anthony Sylvester/Aliston

Also, the film MOGACHI ZHOR looks like, going to be ready in December (and not
in time for IFFI as predicted before).

Did you know ?
Jose Rod is 'Zanvoim' (Son in Law) of Antonette Mendes late Romeo Mendes.
Something that I come to know only yesterday on NT.

Now, please see this tiatrist Late Rosario Dias
I really thought I knew him and wrote to a few other tiatrists but strangely no
one came back to me yet. I think I even remeber his superb acting/roles as
Police Ispector, Advocate etc. Can any one help ?

Until next time, bye for now.

Hi Netters, Does anyone know or had experience transfering residence from

 to Goa.
 I would like to know
 1) Whether Goods can be shipped directly to Goa, the agents in UK are

it has to go to Bombay
 2) Any problem with customs since all the goods are manny many years old?
 3) Any other relevant information
 thanks
 Karl

RESPONSE: I know of one person who has Indian Nationality, who has moved
lock, stock and barrel from the U.K. to Navelim, Goa. The container arrived
directly in Goa. My cousin too, from Dubai sent a container to Goa. The
customs are pretty sticky, irrespective of whether the goods are old nor
not...seems some greasing or influence is needed! The person from Navelim
will be here in London for the Navelim Feast day celebrations. I shall
enquire and post the experience here on Goanet.

What ? Carmo proposing a Bardezcar for sainthood ? That will tilt the
ratio towards
the Bardezcars - tut, tut, cant have that. :) :)

May Father Saldanha who has touched the hearts of so many rest in eternal

It is with a heavy heart that I have to inform you all of the passing away

shape and made them an exemplary Altar Boys' Organization for all the world

[Goanet] State of Systems Engineering Programs in India and Lunch before Next Shuttle Launch at The Taste of Goa Restaurant in Cape Caneveral

2006-11-05 Thread Carmo DCruz
Dr Shaikh,

'India has done very little in field of systems engineering'

This was the headline in the Navhind Times which is the major English
language newspaper in the State of Goa, India. I will tell my mom to hold
the copies of the newspaper for me. This should be a good time to insert
an ad for Florida Tech Systems Engineering Program in the educational
section of the Times of India or Navhind Times.

Also closer to home, I have just been told that the crew of the next Space
Shuttle Mission at the request of apna astronaut Sunita Lynn Pandya
Williams (MSEM-FIT- mid 90s) has decided to have their lunch before lift
off scheduled for around 9pm that night, at my nth cousin Theodore
Mazarello's restaurant Taste of Goa on Dec 7. The restaurant is located
in Cape Canaveral on AIA just opposite the USA (United Space Alliance)
facilities. Theodore did not know what the FBI is upto for this lunch
before launch - even if they clear the dining room, he said the Florida
Tech Dept of Engineering Management and Eng Systems and the Florida Tech
administration is most welcome to have lunch in his spacious kitchen or
in the verrandah out side the restaurant. Apparently Sunita has requested
him to make some boneless tandoori chicken so that she can have it in
space, along with with the Chappatis and Samosas and stash of imli chutney
and hot sauce that she plans to take up there.

See link to one of the many bios of Sunita on the Internet:
http://news.asianweek.com/news/view_article.html?article_id=093d2ca3568045fa121ec4ae481f8be8

So with Sunita in Space, Systems Engineering in the news and our ads, and
my trip to India with Balbir Singh, Florida Tech should be front-page news
in India in November and December. My be we can gift Sunita a Florida Tech
blazer (type-cleared by NASA of course) so she can flash it from Space
during one of their widely televised press interviews from Space !

Best Regards,

Carmo

Re: [Goanet] Goanet's Three Generations/response to Roland

2006-11-05 Thread Roland Francis
Frederick,
For that grey beard, try Godrej's carcinogenic hair dye, guaranteed to
make you never need a shave again.

For that bald or balding pate, try Rogaine, good not only for hair
regeneration but also for your blood pressure that arises when Cecil
gets as tight as a drum courtesy of Goa's fine liquors.

For those lackadaisical feelings, put on Carmo's patented pure silk
kashti and stand in his open balcony facing the Atlantic Ocean. Who
knows which bubbly American female may be looking up ward from the
condo atrium.

With regard to the kashti thing sorry, you might have to wait. Carmo
had ordered the stars and stripes boldly printed on the front in
typical American patriotic fervor, but the manufacturer being a
true-blue Floridian told him the order would only be filled if he
agreed to the Confederate flag instead. Carmo is now considering
whether an Up Yours symbol would do the job. That would increase it's
usefulness. If cut off on the I 75 to Miami, one could whip off the
kashti and wave it at the offender.
