MONDAY MUSE (18 December )

THE JOY OF BEING FEARLESS

The young lawyer, Murlidhar walked the path of Mahatma Gandhi, Vinobha Bhave
and Rabindranath Tagore. He organized lawyers to represent jailed leaders
during Quit India Movement and for this, he was thrown into prison. In his
village he began to eat with his servants and dug wells for the Dalits. He
gave up his law practice, his involvement with his family estates and
started a working place for inter-caste living and manual labour.

One rainy night, he saw a leper with rotting mass of flesh. with holes in
place of a nose, without a trace of fingers and toes with worms and sores
where there had been eye sockets. The "Abhay Sadhak" (seeker of
fearlessness) - a title awarded by Mahatma Gandhi (because of his fearless
stand against a Britisher's attitude towards an Indian bride in a train)
fled! Later, feeling ashamed he returned, picked up the leper, gave him food
and took care of him until he died.

Baba Amte has devoted his life to the care and rehabilitation of leprosy
patients, even allowing his body to be used for experiments to grow leprosy
germs. His dream for having a place that was full of joy established
'Anandwan' - an institution recognised and respected around the world for
dispelling prejudice against leprosy victims. where patients and volunteers
work together in the "Shramik Vidyapeeth" (University of service). He
launched the Bharat Jodo (Unite India) movement with the mission of
establishing peace and raising environmental consciousness.

Born in a family of jagirdars, Baba Amte gave up on his riches and lucrative
law practice. to earn the respect and recognition all over the world, by his
actions. first to dispel his own prejudices and fears . and then later those
in the minds of others. His words say it so well, " I have cured the leprosy
of the body, now I must cure the leprosy of the mind." Fear has to be
overcome first in the mind and the way to do it is take action instead of
allowing our spoken apprehensions to halt our actions.

Fear takes a grip, makes us wince and flee

"Speak through action " to set yourself free!

Historically, this annual convention had achieved little if anything. But under
Eduardo Falerio it
may actually do something, time will tell. However, I do not understand why
Goan taxpayers need to
subsidise NRI registration fees for this meeting. Rupees 1,000 is nothing
(US$23) for 3 days of
free food, entertainment. Perhaps charging the NRIs from the Gulf Rupees 1,000
is ok since they
repatriate money and help Goa immensely. But why should some NRI from
Australia or the UK or
Canada or USA not be charged Rupees 10,000 ($230) for such a convention. Are
they freeloading and
having the Goan taxpayer pay? Are they being treated like beggars by being
asked to pay so little?
Certainly they can afford and should pay more.

George

Culmination of peoples wishes would have been a vote

Goa is not independent, we have neo colonial rulers

19th December is not independence day but Goa Rape

Today's HERALD has a full page feature on "Demonic plan to devastate Goa and
Goans". It re-cycles and expands the Gurudas Kamat write-up of Dec 16th and
embellishes it with maps, photos and cartoons. The vital bit of additional
information, however, is that it estimates Goa's population to reach about
75 lakhs by 2021, five times the 2001 level. This is based on the additional
180 sq km of settlement land being fully used for 1.8 million dwellings of 3
persons each. What about giving an allowance for dwellings which are kept
locked for various common reasons?

In 1961, I was a student of Lourdes Convent Saligao and we had our usual
exams in the month of December. We had our history paper on the 18th
December and as usual I woke up at 5 am to do the last revision before going
for the exam. My mother was in the kitchen. I suddenly felt the window panes
rattling with bomb noise. My brother was studying in st Brittos and on the
15th December the statue of Manuel D'Souza was destroyed. All the students
from Brittos and other schools which had boarders were sent home. I was too
young to understand about liberation. When Iwas told that the Indians have
entered Goa and that they are bombing I got scared and the first thing that
both mom and I did was to rush to the church for mass and prayers.Holidays
were declared till when no body knew. 18th December passed on . In the
morning we saw planes and planes going round the sky. From that day onwards
we could see military trucks moving on the road. We thought now that indians
have come down to Goa we would see electricity in our homes and Goa would
look like Bombay. The rest is History. Instead of development we are seeing
development of particular families, improvement in the pocket money,
disappearence of huts and instead two plus one. The fellow who could not
afford to buy one litre of milk, now has milk for his dogs and cats and may
be street animals. The fellow who could not buy a cycle has now expensive
cars. Quo vadis Domini. For whose benefits are we liberated? and the second
question is are we really liberated?

Folks,
Here is my first attempt on Youtube.
I had to edit a 30 minute video to 6 minutes.
The first 3 minutes are in the first link.
The second 3 minutes are in the second link.

It took me a total of eight hours to edit and down
load the video. I now have some idea of what Joe UK
has to go thru, on a slow line, to send you a video
link from Goa.

On these video clips are the highlights of the draw.
If anyone wants the entire 30 minute DVD, I will
certainly oblige if you make a $10.00 donation to Goa
Sudharop. This is only to cover the postage costs on
my side.

The guy yapping all the time in the first video is
Bosco i.e. the person who approves or in some cases
disapproves your email.

Please pay attention to the draw for prize number
fourteen 'cause I do not think there is more beautiful
girl in this world..

The second video is of some strange people singing
carols (in three different languages). For those who
still doubt my wife sings "Crazy" a say $100.00
donation will secure you the entire song.

The following Goanetters were at the draw:

Ben Antao
Silviano Barboza

The Goa political carnival is on. In the run up for
the Assembly elections it is going to be a long real
life tiatr. The election fever began with a fiery
Narkasur. It was a good Diwali and a very festive Idd.
Christmas promises to be very merry too followed by a
not so dry Lent after a colorful Carnival and Shigmo.
The festivities will culminate into a farcical
assembly election filled with fun and frolic.

The Congress will however have a very considerable
uphill task. It’s not going to be an easy with a
dysfunctional government in office and corruption at
Himalayan proportions. To make matters worse the party
has the biggest liability of its times by way of the
Leader of the Opposition within the Congress Party,
Mr. Churchill Alemao. Churchill seems to be out to
dispose everything his party proposes and makes things
very pleasant and easy for the official Opposition,
the BJP.

Participate in the movement. It's not just about todays protest, but a

No comments here. But unlike the other Colacos (well,
not all... but
at least two others), I don't subscribe to the
colonialism-started-in-1961 thesis. Of course, we have
serious
problems in the era after 1961. But nothing justifies
being part of a
colonial setup in the late 20th century.

You can't just see the world in terms of the

You are Peter; and upon this rock I will build my church, and the
gates of hell shall not prevail against it. Catholic Gospels -
Matthew, Luke, Mark, John - Inspirations of the Holy Spirit Matthew
16: 13-19

13 And Jesus came into the region of Cesarea Philippi: and he asked
his disciples: who do people say that the Son of man is?
14 But they said: Some John the Baptist, some Elias, and others
Jeremias, or one of the prophets.
15 Jesus said to them: But who do you say I am?
16 Simon Peter answered and said: You are Christ, the Son of the living God.
17 And Jesus answering, said to him: Blessed are you, Simon son of
Jona, because flesh and blood have not revealed this to you, but my
Father who is in heaven.
18 And I say to you: That you are Peter; and upon this rock I will
build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.
19 And I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven. And

Hi All,
As far as I know, everything starts with a humble begining.
The Story of Christmas Cards goes like this:
According to Jewish law, a loan has to be repaid within 7 years, after this
period the loan has to be scraped.
It so happened that a jewish gentleman loaned some money to a christian, 7
years passed, the loan was still oustanding.
This Jewish gentleman sent his friend a card TO REMIND him politely that he
was not DEAD, and there was no sin for a jew to ask a Christian for the
money to be repaid on a festive season, when all Employers paid their
employes festive bonuses .
Unfortunately this Christian had also lent money to his friends who did not
repay him, so, HE sent Cards during Christmas festive season.
THE BALL ROLLED.

Any overseas Goans going to Goa on holiday and planning to buy some of
their drugs locally for whatever reason (price, convenience etc),
secure in the knowledge that the products of Indian subsidiaries of
international pharmaceutical companies would be on par with their
European and American standards, had better read this:

http://www.mid-day.com/news/city/2006/december/148668.htm

On top of this, beware of pharmacies in Goa who often tell you that
the MNC product is not available and offer to fill your prescription
with products of little known Indian companies whose formulations you
wouldn't take even if given free if you knew under what conditions
they were manufactured and with what base chemicals.

India does produce raw chemicals and base pharmaceuticals that are
used by top companies worldwide in their pharma products, but these
are held to standards that are closely monitored by their QC
departments while the Indian FDA is a poorly paid and poorly staffed
govt agency.

Anyone familiar with the Lentin Commission report on the 1997 mass
death episodes in Bombay's JJ hospital due to sub-standard drugs
dispensed will know what I am talking about. Very little has improved
after that.

This post is not meant to knock locally available drugs in Goa. Just
to help someone avoid a medical crisis.

Goanet is secular and will always remain secular.

"The God" did not create any religion. Human Beings are much above to any
religion.

On this occassion I agree with Fred that "religion too should have its role
on Goanet", however no Goanetter should impose (directly or indirectly)
his/her religious as well as non-religion believes on others.

We need use our faculty of understanding to discern and identify different

The easiest way to keep Goanet secular without impeding anyone's right
to free speech (free as related to liberty rather than to money),
would be to require posts related to God and religious beliefs to be
charged Rs. 450 (roughly USD10) to be given to a charity I am setting
up called "Make A Wish Foundation" that will give all funds received
annually, equally to the following Goan Churches of:

a) Roman Catholicism
b) Gospel Assemblies (popularly known as "believers")

I have not mentioned Hinduism, Islam, Bah'aai, Zoroastrians, Sikhism
and other faiths as their adherents are either not seen on Goanet or
better still, spare us their enlightened paths.

If implemented, see how these posts just disappear. Like a busy room

Hi Goans,
Jesus NEVER said he was GOD.
Who replaced him with GOD?
If God made 'Jesus Christ' as man.
Why couldn't he/she make him into a woman?
After all 'up to 7 weeks, after conception', every one is a female.
Therefore, Original sin being female, God could have sent a female to put
right what was originally wrong.
And, by the way, why do we not find 'human bones' along side the dinosaur
bones?
Can someone enlighten me on that?!!!

RESPONSE: Gilbert, I take it you are being cynical above?

- 3 months ago the Govt. came under a lot of flak due to drowning deaths
- Govt appointed GTDC in charge of tourist safety on the beaches.
- Fatima Sa, the chairperson of GTDC, announced that 100 lifeguards would be
recruited, of which 20% were to be women.
- Now comes an announcement by the chairwomen that only ONE of the 129
applicants could pass the notified swimming test. So we are back to square
one, with zero safety on our beaches in the middle of the tourist season.
- Is there no worthy lifeguard in this state?

RESPONSE: Is it possible the GTDC set a very high standard making it
difficult for the incumbents and the applicants to hold onto or qualify for
the new lifeguard position?

What's this bizarre limit of 20% women. Why not 60% women if they met the
standards, why not NO women, if they did not meet the standard?

Suggestions (possibly already instituted) for the chairperson of GTDC:

1) Hire some of the 128 applicants who didn't make it. Pay them a stipend
for 6 months with the condition they meet the standards at the end of that
term before being hired as fully qualified lifeguards. In other words, don't
go looking for lifeguards; GTDC should train them.

2) Who uses the pools at the Swimming complex at Campal? I assume the youth
living within a reasonable distance. The GTDC can sponsor/finance a program
that would introduce formal swimming courses that would lead to being
certified as a lifeguard over a period of 2-3 years. If the program is in
place permanently, there could be a permanent supply of lifeguards.

On a cynical note of my own, its quite likely that certified lifeguards have
moved on and out of Goa..or..nobody wants to be a lifeguard as the
job is not as glamourous as Baywatch makes it out to be.

Pope names Indian scientist to pontifical academy
By Michael Gonsalves, Indo-Asian News Service

Pune, Dec 17 (IANS) Pope Benedict XVI has appointed noted space
scientist K. Kasturirangan as a member of the prestigious Rome-based
Pontifical Academy of Sciences - and the Indian said he was "extremely
delighted".

"I am extremely delighted to be appointed at the world's most
prestigious academy where over 35 percent members are distinguished
Nobel laureates in various disciplines of natural sciences,"
Kasturirangan, who headed the Indian Space Research Organisation
(ISRO) until 2003, told IANS from Bangalore.

"It was a great honour to receive the appointment letter from His
Holiness the Pope himself," the 66-year-old director of the
Bangalore-based National Institute of Advanced Studies (NIAS) said
over telephone.

According to a Vatican press statement, the astronomer led India's
space programme for more than nine years. He is known for his
contribution to the development and launching of satellites for civil
use, telecommunications and ocean observation.

"I am the fourth Indian scientist to be named by the Pope after (the
late physicist and Nobel laureate) C.V. Raman, M.G.K. Menon and C.N.R.
Rao," he said.

Menon is a physicist and policy maker, a former president of the
National Academy of Sciences and from the Tata Institute of
Fundamental Research, Mumbai (1966-75).

Rao, a distinguished chemist, is a former director of the Indian
Institute of Science at Bangalore and visiting professor at Purdue,
University of Oxford, the University of Cambridge and Latrobe
University. He is also a former scientific advisor to the prime
minister.

Kasturirangan, who worked with the eminent Indian space scientist
Vikram Sarabhai, said the academy membership is for life and the
academy's 80-90 members were selected after a thorough scrutiny.

"The academy members meet biannually in Rome to discuss, debate and
study issues related to various sciences affecting mankind," said
Kasturirangan, A member of Indian Parliament. He has authored nine
books on space research and 220 research papers in international
journals.

Born in 1940 IN Ernakulam, Kerala, he graduated in sciences from the
University of Bombay and obtained a doctorate in experimental
high-energy astronomy at the Physical Research Laboratory of Ahmedabad
where he is honorary physics professor.

He was conferred the Life Time Achievement award by Indian National
Academy of Engineering (INAE), New Delhi, in 2004. He has won several
international awards.

He is a member of the International Academy of Astronautics and an
associate member of the Indian National Academy of Engineering, where
he is currently the chairman. He has been awarded Padma Vibhushan,
India's second highest civilian honour.

The 403-year-old Pontifical Academy of Sciences is under the
protection of the Pontiff and aims to promote the progress of the
mathematical, physical and natural sciences and the study of related
epistemological problems.

Dear Anthony Barreto aka Tony Martin,

Please take a kilo chocolate cake from a Margao bakery, a bottle of
the usual liquor best enjoyed by Ballu Pundi Velip and a bouquet of
flowers and deliver them to him with an envelope containing Rs.500.

Tell him it is from someone in Canada who appreciates his unfurling
and lowering the Indian flag and his services to the Poinguinim
(wherever that is) panchayat for those long and faithful years. A
Christmas gift, perhaps.

I shall send you the money by Paypal. It is most convenient, costs you
no fees and all you have to do is set up an account. (www.paypal.com).
Or a bank draft if you will, though that will take a much longer time.

Please confirm you will do this and the amount I need to send. Thank
you in anticipation.

Cheers,
Roland.

constituent of the Goa Bachao Abhiyan, and appeals to all citizens to
participate actively in the rally organized by the Abhiyan on 18

An exhibition of artworks on the theme “Towards a Free and Secular Goa”
was inaugurated on 17 December 2006 at Menezes Braganza Hall. The
exhibition was inaugurated by Smt. Kamal Andrade who handed over a
sapling symbolizing Goa to Master Divyan Naik and exhorted him to
protect and nurture this plant. The focus of the exhibition is on the
co-existence of diversity in people and nature in Goa and the need to
celebrate the same. The exhibition will be open to the public on 18 and
19 December, and will culminate in the “March for A Free and Secular
Goa” on 19 December 2006, Goa Liberation Day.

Goa Heritage Bachao on 18th December
By Prajal Sakhardande

Tomorrow is the public meeting. Join in large numbers. The day
after tomorrow is Goa's 45th liberation day. The question that every
enlightened Goan is asking today is "Are we truly liberated?"

It is an auspicious sacred occasion to re-live the memories of
our martyrs and some of the genuine freedom fighters who sacrificed their
lives for Goa's freedom. It is an occasion to salute those freedom fighters
such as Nilkanth alias Nikubab Karapurkar, Dr Pandurang Moolgaonkar, who
never availed of the pension but were selfless, genuine heroes of our
struggle for freedom. It is an occasion to commemorate the selfless
sacrifice made by our martyrs such as Sardar Karnail Singh Banipal, a youth
from Punjab who sacrificed his life at Patradevi on 15th August, 1955 and
has long been forgotten. These selfless sacrifices are going in vain today.

Join in at the public protest meet on the eve of Goa's
liberation day at Azad Maidan-Panaji at 3 p.m on December 18th and Save Goa
from the evil designs of the greedy, selfish government, builders,
politicians and bureaucrats. The whole of Goa needs to rise to the occasion
to protest against the Regional Plan - 2011.

We are yet to attain freedom. This is a new struggle, a struggle
against our own people who for their power hunger and greed are out to
destroy our mother -- our beautiful green natural heritage. The true freedom
struggle has begun now. We need to liberate Goa from the dictatorial regime
of our politicians hand-in-glove with the elite builders' lobby who have no
love for Goa. The rallying cry today is Utt Goenkara! Utt!

Be there on the 18th of December, 2006 at 3 p.m at Azad Maidan,
Panaji and save Goa. Down with the Regional Plan-2011.

Jai Goa! Jai Hind!

Dear Readers
I do not know much of Koran and by writing half things I may insult the
muslims with my wrong concept. I just happened to read part of Koran in
which some commandments were mentioned. One of them was visit to Haj once in
life time, Namaz I think five times a day etc etc but some portion I found
similar to old testaments. Some muslims on the net will be able to throw
light on this topic. I think they do not believe in Jesus about his
resurection etc. Any way most of the religions teach one think-love one
another. Yet we find it so difficult to love our next door neighbour. I
remember one day a school girl was knocked down by a speeding car and we
wanted to take her from Siolim to Asilo. It was just after the school hours.
The first car that came by was a Maruti tourist taxi. Some christians were
in and they were not ready to oblige as they were to get to the airport. The
second was a private car who did not stop at all but finally we managed to
get one person to take the poor child to the asilo hospital. Very few people
think about the love for human beings. Sometimes a little help can save
life. One day someone was driving along and there was a big crowd gathered.
He was stopped by a mob who told him that help is need to transport a girl
to the hospital. It was afternoon and this gentleman was in hurry to get
somewhere and refused to oblige. He went his way and when even came he was
shocked to see crowd at his place and was told that his daughter had died in
an accident. He heard some people saying "We asked help from so many people
but no one helped us to take the child to the hospital. Had someone helped
us the child would be saved. He had lost everything becasuse he never knew
to love someone.

  JoeGoaUk wrote about his cousin:

===
My cousin is available..
She is young, slim, simple, innocent, virgin, homely, convent educated, God
fearing etc
She is only 41.
Now, before you ask how come she is so young or late ..
Well, there were many proposals but mostly rejected by her two younger
brothers who were then
bachelors. Now that they are married and she is not getting on well with
her sister-in-laws,
she approached me
I assured her to find someone on our popular Goanet.
This is what she is going to take with her (you can term it as dowry)*
Her full share in the ancestors house, properties, Parents (deceased) bank
deposits etc
Her share alone worth 55 lakhs (Now keep this in between you and me only).
As the parents did not leave behind a 'will', they have all long applied
for 'inventory'
proceedings she is 'Cabeca de Casal'(head of the family) the process likely
to finish within
one month. Plus she has two full sets of jewelry and other ladies stuff.
Now, please don't ask me how I know about her V (victory)? Believe me or not.

---

A few questions Joe since you have gone public with your description.

1) Unlike conventional adverts you have not mentioned her height and
complexion. Why?

2) Other than 'convent educated' you tell us nothing about her
qualifications. Why?

3) I suppose some folks place a premium on virginity so I will let that
pass. But please explain to me what is meant by 'innocence'. She has never
dated? Never had physical contact of any sort with a man? Never been in
romantic love? Never even perused any matter that might be considered
erotic? Completely unaware about the process of pro-creation. Is it
ignorance parading as innocence?

4) The material possessions seems to be dominant in your description of
your cousin. Why?

5) You have not mentioned anywhere what sort of a man your cousin is
looking for. Surely she has some criteria? If earlier proposals were
rejected by her brothers then maybe they will reject new ones too. Doesn't
she have any say in the matter? Will her brothers then decide how the
couple lives too? With 55 lakhs at her disposal and 41 years of life
experiences surely she can make such an important decision herself?

Please do not take offense to any of my questions. I am merely curious
about the process of advertising oneself for a matrimonial. I am not
particularly bothered about your cousin but want to ask the larger
question. What is it that we as a society value and parade while
advertising a prospective spouse. Are these the same values that others are
looking for? Are they truly the important ones to make a marriage work?

Cheers!

Cecil

Well said, Aires Rodrigues!

For a couple of years this event was called 'Gomant
Vishwa Sammelan', this year it is termed and
publicized as Global Goans Convention ! Wonder why
the change??

Let the NRI Commissioner present some viable
investment projects like and including B.O.T. or
infrastructure development to the NRGs? Moreover, the
NRI Commissioner should present factual time bound
projects which are on the anvil and proposed to be
carried out by the Goa Government in fiscal year April
2006-07.

Better still, let the NRI Commissioner open up the
archives of the questions raised in the past, the
action taken up since the BJP-Government initiated
this process, and the future course streamlined.

The attention is drawn to the fact that: The
honorarium of Rs.10,000 besides actual taxi charges
for attending to work of the Centre was provided to
the Chairman NRI Facilitation Centre as notified under
Gazette Series I dated 21.8.2003 under the
Facilitation Centre for Welfare of NRI (Goans) (Grant
of Assistance) Rules 2003 and effective from
21.8.2003!

So there was no 'free' or honorary work undertaken by
the Chairman, not forgetting the annual trips to the
Gulf on fact finding mission(s) after every couple of
years!

And the above facts were highlighted by MARIA SYLVIA
FERNANDES DINIZ, Secretary (SGPIAG) & TERENCE
MAZARELO, President (SGPIAG) ( [EMAIL PROTECTED]
)way back in December 2003, here is a re-run:

The NRI Goans are also expecting the Chief Minister of

d) providing educational technical /professional

Sorry, I should have mentioned earlier that I got the link via Eddie

it (as I was just reminded during the IFFI 2006 when we ran into each
other over brief periods) and deserves the credit for unearthing all
these interesting links. FN
PS: Couldn't convince Eddie to post GoanVoice newsletter (text

Folks,

The credit in the case of this Reita Faria link, as indicated in GVUK goes
to Fritz D'Souza of Intelgrate in Goa.

The image in the Rediff article is of poor quality and it would be
unfortunate to judge Faria's appearance on the basis of it alone. I
contacted her a few months ago and obtained the following links:

Organisations gear up for anti-regional plan rally
NT Staff Reporter

Panaji, Dec 16: The opposition to the Regional Plan 2011 is building up with
political parties, religious leaders, intellectuals and professionals,
besides non-government organisations joining their hands against the
"controversial public document" valid for a period of 10 years from 2001 to
2011.

'Save Goa', which spearheads the agitation against the plan has organised a
public rally on December 18, at 3 p.m, at Azad Maidan, for allowing the
public to voice their opposition to the particular document.

The convenor of 'Save Goa', Dr Oscar Rebello has appealed to all the
organisations - social and religious, all political parties, students
unions, tiatrists, various communities from Goa, artists, activists, the
media, the Goa Chamber of Commerce and Industries, and every Goan to lend
their helping hand and provide the moral support to fight against the plan.

Air Fare: Another Surcharge

It seems all airlines now started charging additional fees/charge as
'Congestion Surcharge'
of Rs.150.(eff.Dec.8th ?).

Air Deccan is throwing away 2,00,000 tickets for just Rs.2 (for travel during
Feb/March)

I tried for for 20th Feb o/w to Bombay, I was lucky to get ticket for just Rs.2
but on the
next page the final amount was showing up Rs.1, 177

i.e.

002.00 Air fare to BOM o/w
   225.00 PSF (Pax Service Fees)
   750.00 Fuel Surcharge
   150.00 Congestion Surcharge- NEW
   050.00 Transaction fee
   ===
1,177.00 (Rupees One thousand seven hundred seventy seven only)

So, your ticket is just Rs.2 but taxes & fees are Rs.1,175
(Strangely, if you are lucky, same fare applies to New Delhi etc)

It also means that there are no tickets now cheaper than Rs.1,175 (assuming
one gets a Zero
air-fare offer).

Few months back, with such airlines' offers, one could travel as low as Rs.222
i.e. Re.1 +
Rs.221 as PSF or 99+221=320 or 300+221=521 or 500+221=721

Dear Cip,

Your chivalry is appreciated but misplaced. You should take the trouble of
following a thread carefully before jumping in without a clue about what
has transpired.

1) Selma sent in a very long posting, in reply to Sunith, insisting that
the word 'gaunti' was not derogatory when used of a person. Stands to
reason then that she should not object to it then being used to describe her.

2) Selma has specifically given me permission to use the word 'gaunti' when
describing her. To quote: "As for calling me gaunti, you can call me
anything you like. Just don't call me simple or homely"

So you see Cip, some people have to bear the consequences of making
flamboyant statements. Please don't compare apples and oranges. I fully
support Selma's right to express her opinions. I also have the right to
expose contradictions or falsities in her opinions.

Cheers!

Dear Fr Ivo, Your post begins by talking about 'religion', then you
limit the subject to Christianity, and finally end with general
conclusions about 'religion'. Would you also extend the same
generosity when you look at all othe religion (and also people who
don't fit into organised religions, or opt for no religion)? The
limitations of monotheism, notwithstanding? Would you also argue that
all founders of religions (other than Christianity too) were "secular"
-- even if this is a contradiction in terms, but let's not quibble
over finer nuances now -- but accept the reality that followers of
*all* religions are sometimes communal, and this gives the religions
they practise a bad name? FN

Since Cip is currently also in Goa, why don't you two guys just meet

When I searched Merriam-Webster for the word, this is what I found:

Suggestions for gaunti:

 1. gunite
 2. gauntly
 3. gunites
 4. Gaunt
 5. go into
 6. Gondi
 7. Goyania
 8. goony
 9. gowany
10. Goiania

And my computer keyboard isn't in Devanagari either (in any case,
there are hardly sufficient Konkani resources in cyberspace). Okay, so
who's contributing to the debate on Goanet? FN

REGIONAL PLAN-2011

The term 'suscegad Goemkars' is proved beyond any doubt in connection with
the Regional Plan-2011. If not, then this RP-2011 would be on the
implementation route with more than half of it already implemented. And if
this was the case, Goa would have its Garbage treatment sites operating,
highways, expressways, airports, ports, tunnels, fly-overs, roads, bridges,
bus terminuses, markets, CRZ preservation et al would be in place and Goa
would be on the road towards humane development. But no! Goa was
unfortunate to have a turbulent political scenario in the last decade where
politicians, instead of being concerned about Goa, were hugely concerned
about their pockets and their chairs. The result of all this is the Regional
Plan-2011.

When contacted by Goan Observer's Melba Antao to do this piece, I gave her
my party's 'two- word' response straight on the phone 'SCRAP RP-2011' But
she wouldn't have it.

At the public hearing conducted by the TCP Department at Panjim PDA, Mala,
my party has gone on record of telling the Chief Town Planner this:

Quote
You, Mr. Morad Ahmed, have been reduced to being the 'errand boy for the TCP
Minister. Had the Minister ordered you to shop for his groceries, you would
be doing it unquestioningly. When Goa Su-Raj Party comes to power, you will
be re-instated for your capability of being the Town & Country Planner.
Unquote
(I am sure Mr. Despande has recorded the above quote somewhere)

Regional Plan has a period of 10 years for planning and 10 years for
implementation, which periods are independent of each other. One plans for
the next 10 years while the previously planned and notified RP is being
implemented. Once the RP is notified, it cannot be changed, unless there is
an emergency such as a massive earthquake or a Tsunami, etc. Goa's present
RP-2011 is nothing but compulsive painting of the map of Goa by vested
interests, where the TCP Department has been shamelessly reduced to being
mere painters, errand boys, cooks and butlers.

Town & Country Planning is a serious job. If the infrastructure is planned
and implemented, development takes place automatically, in a regulated
manner.

SAVE GOA - FROM ITS POLITICIANS!

Of all the reactions to the notorious Regional Plan 2011, perhaps the most
shocking has been the reported statement by senior
Ministers such as for Information Technology and Education as well as the
Hon'ble Deputy Speaker that they were unaware of the finer
details of the Plan and would have to study it in order to comment!

Since the Minister for Town & Country Planning has confirmed that the Plan
was approved by the Cabinet and signed by the Chief Minister, are we to
assume that such vital decisions are being taken without any proper study or
consideration by those entrusted
with the governance of our State?

The argument that there should be no agitation against the Plan as the
matter is "sub-judice" and we should await the decision of the Court in the
matter is also a specious one. The Court is only concerned with the legality
or otherwise of the procedure followed by the Government in formulating the
Plan and not with its merits or consequences.

Albert writes
Jesus forms the bridge between the old testament and the new testament.
Whatever Jesus has preached while he was on earth is enough for one to reach
heaven. Jesus has made our religion so simple that it is very easy to reach
the Heavens but yet this simple law given by Jesus is so difficult for us it
looks like we have to carry a mountain on our shoulders. If one loves God
with his whole heart and places God before everything then man will not bow
before any other gods. Today our body, our wealth, our family has become
gods for us. Jesus prayed very little. His prayers were not made of our
father hail mary and glory but with his heart riped open He looked at His
Father and gave Him glory and praises. Jesus did his normal work. If each of
us want to do the will of God where ever you may be work with God. Whether
you are a housewife, a doctor, teacher or lawyer or a government servant
just work as a true Christian. Today professionals are trying to squeeze
money from people. Today doctors delay to treat patients and make it so
complicated poor people have to run from one hospital to another for simple
treatment. Today the government servants do not go to work evry day and have
their own private business and yet are prominently seen in churches to
attend masses to show that one is very holy. This is not christianity.

Dear Goannetters,

GOAN OBSERVER.

www.goanobserver.com

Goa's first Weekly with fearless reporting, indepth analysis & more.

Goan Observer is the only independent media organisation in Goa which has
the courage to reflect the grievances of ordinary Goans. Goan Observer is
able to report news and carry viewswhich other media organisation will not
publish because Goan Observer is a non profit organisation committed to the
interest of Goa and Goans. Goan Observer can stand up to pressure both from
the government and private enterprises because it is run by media
professionals under the guidance of independent directors including Mr.
Arvind Bhatikar, former Chairman of MPT, Dr. Francisco Colaco, Executive
President of Lok Shakti and Leo D'Mello, Business Consultant and Management
Guru.
Rajan Narayan

Goan Observer Private Ltd came up as a dream and a vision of Rajan Narayan,
who resigned from being an Editor of Herald some 3 years ago. In true
journalistic tradition, Rajan always believes in giving to the readers the
Truth and the Whole Truth. He was getting suffocated when asked to hide,
ignore and stifle the Truth from the people of Goa. A daring move by Rajan
to come out and start his own little publication met with tremendous support
from different quarters and the Goan Observer was born. Very many people
from different walks of life have credited Goan Observer for contributing to
the downfall of the erstwhile BJP government which had turned communal and
dictatorial. But Rajan in all his characteristic humility will say - he has
only reported what was happening in Goa. It was the people, who out of that
awareness voted a government out of power. The vote behind that vote was
that Goan Observer is a fearless, fair and bold weekly. The fourth pillar of
Democracy was getting stronger.
Goan Observer is non political in its make-up and will be always neutral in
dispensing out the news. It goes beyond just dispensing the news. It tends
to be first on the scene of happenings. Its reporters strive to look deeper,
get an array of views and the editorial team works on giving a balanced
analytical report to the reader.
We are still growing and need support from readers who care about Goa, who
want to know the whole truth and who care for better governance. Please
spread the word around so that there is awareness about what Goan Observer
stands for. We also appeal for feedback and suggestions from you. Write to

Fred used the word 'well pigmented' to describe a dark skinned person. I
have also heard the word 'coloured' to describe people of dark skin. I
don't think these words are right. I mean isn't pink a colour too? None of
the people we refer to as 'white skinned' are actually 'white' but they are
shades of pink and cream. Would you call a pale skinned person 'badly
pigmented'? That too would be placing a positive / negative value on an
aspect that is pre-determined and cannot be changed - except temporarily
with a lot of Fair & Lovely cream.

A nice Skin Colour chart is available at:
http://www.retouchpro.com/pages/skintones.jpg

I refer to myself as dark-brown, except after an afternoon salt water bath,
when my skin resembles deep purple.

Cheers!

Cecil

Please define the issue as it should be: off-topic or on-topic.
Offtopic posts should be discouraged, and used on the rarest of rare
occasions. I would be happy to posts of religious traditions beyond
Christianity (simply because the latter is already well represented).
Hinduism, Islam, Buddhism, whatever. Of course, I won't shed any tears
for atheism/agnosticism because that is well represented (over
represented?) already? It would also be nice to hear women's voices on
religion. FN

Dear Fr.Vasco,

I am glad to read your message written for all our brethren, who are reading
Goanet messages.

It is a pity that often we are celebrating X'mas without Christ... You have
proclaimed the Saviour to one and all on this Forum. May Jesus of Nazareth
mean a lot to all of us!

You have reminded me of the times in which you were our 'Guruji'; in the
Patriarchal Seminary of Rachol.

May God bless you! Blessed Christmas with Christ the Saviour to all of you!

Dear All,

It is sad to see emails of this sort being sent worldwide making
christianity being potrayed as some sort of religion run by extremists.. it
is very wrong to quote words such as the following:

'Unhappily most people buy and send printed cards, in which "Xmas" is
already printed. You may perhaps, therefore, like to make such a plea to
producers of such cards so that at least in future they change the printed
text. If you think it good, do send the suggestion-request right now: it is
not early for...Christmas 2007! And what is the meaningfulness, here in
India, of European style Christmas Cards with pine trees and snow, and
reindeer and ... Santa Claus? Or cards with no Christian message on it?
Should we not, if we send cards to our non-Christian friends (and that is a
wonderful idea !), profit of this friendly gesture to send cards with a
truly meaningful Christian message?

Ever since we are kids we have been made to believe and have known christmas
to be snow, pine trees , reindeers etc... Jesus was born in Bethelem isnt it
the same there ie. snow et all during the time ? so what is all the
cribbing about? why is it being compared typically as being a European
Christmas ??? be it in India or anywhere else in the world it is still
CHRISTMAS - the birth of our saviour being celebrated

We all love the holy father, mother mary and jesus and strongly believe in
the bible Having christian messages printed on the cards is not all
there is to christmasby sending cards we are greeting each other
although far away its the same message.. ITS a SIMPLE GREETING! how can
we give our non christian friends cards that have christian messages on
them??? would anyone of us like it if they gave us such cards for their
occassions??? anyone in their right minds would think we are trying to
impose our religion on them! i know i wouldnt ... cos at the end of the day,
CARDS ARE ONLY GREETINGS sent to people far away from us!

For Carmo: Does it matter so much to you to if Christmas or Xmas is written
on the Cards??? why do you go to such petty differences whereby x - meaning
unknown is compared to christ?does it really matter as to what's
written? what ever way Christmas is written we are still celebrating the
birth of christ jesus and we love him ... so no words or anything said
or written by anyone should matter ...

guys no matter what cards you buy or what words are on the card no
matter what clothes you wear ..or if you are pushed to go to the church by
your elders every day.its the person within you thats important... all
it takes is a bit of love, honesty, care, warmth and bit of your smile and
they will make the other person feel loved and cared for in returnthese
are the qualities which should reflect well on the other person help the
less fortunate and you will be blessed this is the true meaning of
christmas where we welcome jesus in our hearts by being true and kindso
why give such petty excuses and reasons to people to mock our religion

Please therefore, stop sending such emails in future instead of sending
these mails, why not divert our energy in helping the less fortunate whereby
you will be actually acting as true god fearing christian???

Thanks

Maria

I join Balbir Singh-ji in congratulating you on your golden triumphs at the
Doha Asiad. You wont believe it, but I was at the Goa Ground Zero - around
the Bhot Avelino Mansion in Tollecanto - which erupted into a wild
celebration when Leander won his second gold medal at the Asiad ! Perhaps
Aunty Marlaq and Uncle Dr. Pedro Antonio Paes were smiling down from up
above ! I could feel the pulse of the place and Leander you should be proud
that the whole of Tollecanto, Velim, Salcete, Goa and India were behind you
and rooting for you and your partners all the way ! I can only imagine the
scene at the Calcutta Ground Zero in the Beck Bagan neighbourhood ! Once
again you have proved that you are the ultimate comeback kid ! We are all
very proud of you ! Whats next ? A Grand Slam in mens doubles in 2007 ?
Keep up the tempo !

Dear Roland Francis
The word of God is never interesting one to Goan Roman Catholics. If you go
to church you may find people reading newspapers during the serman. If the
word about God written by Albert is not interesting one Roland Francis
should write one himself and I will follow him and write like wise.I am not
putting fear of hospitalisation but what I meant is that people clinch to
God in desterity. Why do people rush to Pota? Most of them are sick and want
a miracle. I request Roland Francis to read about God which I feel like
writing and if you do not want to read skip it and go to the next one
instead of making noise. At least one person on the Goa net may like to read
what I write.

That's right. I agree with Santosh. Also, posts pertaining to all
religions should be equally welcome. On the other hand, my personal
view is that near-communal postings, which try to show someone else's
religion in poor light should also be discouraged or disallowed for
obvious reasons. It gets us nowhere, hardens stands on all sides,
lends nothing to the debate, and overall increases bitterness. (I'm
not referring to Santosh's general critique of religion in general,
which has its place, but the my-religion-is-more-rational-than-yours
perspectives which we see in a big way sometimes on Goanet.) --FN

Religion is one of the dimensions of human nature. Human beings have always
been in quest of God. God is drawing human beings to himself. What we need
is toget rid of communalism and distorted concept of God. Secular mindedness
should not be against religion and God, but against communalism. Jesus was
secular, even when he revealed his Father. He did not found a religion in
its strict sense. Organized life, embedded in a culture (and cultures are
galore), will be our way of living, part and parcel of our
"being-in-the-world", hence Christian movement has taken diverse cultural
faces. The Church is the renewed community, living in time and space
(spatio-temporal dimension of humanity is essential). But basically
Christianity is a movement of the heart and hence of the way of life towards
God, revealed in the Person of Jesus Christ, and towards our neighbour. We
should avoid distortions and communalism, which is basically
anti-religion... It is also anti-secular, anti-human...

We have the right and duty of discussing "religion" and enlightening our
minds and purifying our hearts. May this Forum be uplifting and supportive
in every area of human existence!

Fair enough, obviously stopping all such discussions would be pointless.
We all have our pet hobby-horses and want to flog them. But some
self-restraint is called for -- in the past week we have had 10 posts on
religion which are clearly off-topic, all from the same person. It's not
as if they talked about the canonisation of Fr. Vaz or some temple being
built in Goa, which would be on-topic. I responded to Roland's mail on
this issue, only when we started getting 1-2 of these religious mail a
day, which in my opinion is excessive. Why not 1-2 daily mails on the
Flying Spaghetti Monster, in that case? Maybe I should start spreading
the good word on Goanet. While I consider the advisability of this,
those who cannot wait any longer for the true word and complete
enlightenment, visit http://www.venganza.org/
