Quite a few posts are having a love-hate relationship about Portugal and India.
Before I analyze this strange Freudian relationships, I would request the
indulgence, to introduce to the readers some typical American terms. Apologies
to those familiar with the terms.

In the USA, when one buys a defective item or lands in a bad situation, the
phrase used is lemon (please do not ask me why?). When one makes the best and
a success of a bad situation, the phrase used is, making lemonade from a
lemon.

Many Goans who were forced (for political or economic reasons) to leave Goa
pre-1961 and became successful, are grateful to Salazar for giving them a
lemon. From this, they made lemonade.

Many Goans who left Goa pre- and post-1961 and studied and made a success in
India are grateful to Salazar and Nehru for giving them a lemon. From this,
they made lemonade.

I congratulate these Goans who were born without a silver spoon in their mouth
and grew up without soles for their feet. They achieved triple success. Triple
because:
1. They overcame severe adversities.
2. The competed with others (natives and their masters) in their new land on
their turf.
3. In being successful, these Goans overcame the competition (natives in the
new land) at THEIR skill, following THEIR rules.

Goans who hate Salazar or Nehru (or the present govt.) are very likely those
who could not make lemonade from the lemon. Or they are perennial haters.

Present-day Goans, where ever they may be, can learn from their ancestors and
learn to make lemonade from a lemon. This instead of spending the rest of their
lives complaining about their situation and hating Salazar or Nehru or anybody
else. I am very grateful to Salazar and Nehru for 'forcing me' to leave Goa
and India. Every adversity has been a stepping-stone to success. Looking
back, I could not have planned my adversities any better.
Kind Regards, GL

I agree with Fred when he says: I agree. I didn't ask to be spammed by all
this political propaganda from the BJP and its backers, on a mailing list
whose agenda is to discuss Goa.

While we discuss what the BJP did or did not do, or whether Manohar Parikar
is good or bad, let us also discuss what the Congress can do for Goa. After
all, I think the people have to be given a proper choice in terms of what is
positive. Perhaps, as an unbiased observer, Fred can list out what are the
positive things that the Congress has done, as well as what are the
negatives.

I did point out that the very people who are today trying to destroy Goa
through the Regional Plan are members of the Congress Party, and either they
will contest as Congressmen in the next election, or have important position
in the government if Congress wins the next elections.

Sachin, with due respect, your post seems to be a continuation of the
political propaganda we've seen on Goanet in recent days (and in the
Goa press generally, in time for Elections 2007).

To me, all the Congress-is-evil arguments coming up at this time (yes,
indeed, Congress is evil... but so is the BJP... why stay silent about
that?) is stratgically timed for squeezing out the maximum pre-poll
election advantage. Sorry, I'm no Congress backer (never voted for
that part in my life, probably never will)... but I won't fall into
that game.

It's important to realise that the only way the BJP can ever hope to
win an election in Goa is by building disenchantment among Congress
voters. To my mind, the problem is about unresponsive, communal,
corrupt politicians who don't care less about the citizen. The
Congress has no monopoly over such trends, though the way the issue is
being framed (by the well-networked overactive BJP types) it would
seem so! FN

PS: I know for a fact that some of those involved with the Regional
Plan protest issue also have misgivings about the manipulation of the
issue (for obvious political advantage) ... though there would be just
denials on this front.

Though I cannot resist but adding that my favourite writer of Goan origin

Interestingly the new anthology of Goan writing, (Jerry Pinto's latest

Hi George
You echo my sentiments entirely in your text below which I decided not to
truncate so that it could be read again. From the exchanges between many US
Goans and the rest on Goanet, I have seen little or no evidence, except from
those Mario inadvisedly labels as lefties that, they appeared to
appreciate the struggles of African-Americans in the Civil Rights Movement.

Indeed, like others, when I expressed the view that, but for Rosa Parks,
Mario would probably be sitting at the back of the bus, on journeys, he got
really mad with me. Thus, his response in a separate post to you, on this
issue, appears to be pretty hollow if he could not, when it was pointed out,
readily accept Rosa Parks' important contribution to fighting racial
segregation in transport and how he (Mario) and the likes of him, directly
benefitted in the USA even if perhaps he does not now use a bus.

Today is the Martin Luther King holiday in the USA. I took the Freedom
 Train from San Jose to
San Francisco and wondered along the 1.5 hour ride if US Goans understand
 the debt they owe people
like MLK and other civil rights fighters/organizations. I have been
 fortunate to visit Montgomery,
Alabama, and Dexter Baptist Memorial Church where MLK first preached, the
 town where Rosa Parks
refused to give up her seat. I have stood in awe at the Edmund Pettis
 bridge (Selma, Alabama) and
thought about the great sacrifies made so equal opportunity is now
available to all communities, an idea we want to fight for around the
 world.
Goan prosperity owes a great deal to the opportunties and freedoms created
by the Civil Rights Act and the people (mostly African-Americans) who gave
their lives so others can be free. But have US Goans stopped to reflect on
our good fortune? Do we appreciate the African-American community or are
we racist towards them? It is easy to be lost with an I-Pod, text
messaging the world on mundane matters. It is easy to picnic and dance at
the usual Goan functions, these things don't take any skills. What is a
challenge is to see important points in our history, however blurred by
time and our present prosperity and be grateful to those who got us here.
 Thank you Martin Luther King.
 Regards,
 George

Gilbert,

You said not to ask, but I'll tell you anyway. You
see, I live in the American heartland, where such
agricultural expressions originated.

The next time you go to the grocery store buy a lemon
and cut it in half and suck it. You will quickly

Well, when faced by a bad situation, a lemon if you

Roland,

I was not going to reply to Bernardo publicly, but now you have forced
me to do so.

Both sides of my family prospered under Portuguese rule and its BIAS
towards the landed gentry.

I am a son of the family Bernado mentioned. My paternal grandfather was
incredibly wealthy under Portguese rule and used the system to amass
many houses and insanely vast tracts of land. Having invested his
wealth in houses, land and agriculture he paid a heavy price post
Liberation. Land to the tiller, houses under rent control and
agriculture destroyed by the barges that began plying the Mandovi.
Never heard my father complain though!

My maternal grand father(Alvaro Dias) was a Judge and his father Goa's
first surgeon general(M.C. Dias). While other netters promote blatant
LIES about Portuguese rule and their treatment of the common Goan, I
know for a fact that my grandfather was sent on a punishment posting to
Angola for what was perceived as a Pro-Goan bias. My grandmother was a
great supporter of Nehru. When I think of the immense pride she had in
being Indian and compare it with the pride many people on this forum
have in being ruled for centuries by a bunch of short white men , it
really gets my goat.

All this economics and history has nothing to do with my pride of being
FREE and being Indian. If my grandfather was a pauper under Portuguese
rule, I would still be equally proud of being Indian and FREE. I thank
the Portuguese for nothing and my Indian brothers for my freedom.

A man's wealth should never be the source of his pride, content or
debate. It is a shame that a youngster has to remind you and Bernardo
of this vital truth.

Goans are Goans not only because of 450 years of Portuguese rule but
also the 2000 years preceeding that and the almost 50 years since that
ended. I am equally proud of my all my ancestors, right from the first
one who carved those rocks in Usgallimol in 2500 B.C, the unfortunate
ones who suffered the brutal Inquistion and the more fortunate ones who
amassed great wealth under colonial rule.

Regards
Sunith Velho

P.S. If any Goans on this forum have the illusion/delusion that they
have Portuguese blood, refer to the book Luso Descendentes da India
Portuguesa(F. Oriente). If you are not in that book then sorry you
come from the same stock as other Indians unless one of your ancestors
was an illegitimate child.

Roland writes:
Bernard,
If our Sunith is indeed related to Velho e Filhos his answer will probably be:

A) My father and his father before him, built up the business with
their own smarts. It had nothing to do with the Portuguese (now any
Goan living in Goa before 1961 knows the answer to that one)
or
B) We thrived despite the Portuguese. They tried to stop us from
expanding but we did it all the same. (Perhaps all the mineowners who
got their leases from the then Govt have an answer to that one).
or
C) We were small potatoes during Portuguese time but assimilation into
India is when the company really took off. (Yes like Google, they
burst onto the scene).

I am hoping that he might bring a refreshing answer to your
question, nothing to do with the three possibilities above. But what I
am really hoping is that Sunith has no connection with the business in
question so that we will all save a lot of bother. After all who wants
to hear that Goans are Goans because of 450 years of Portuguese rule.

Cheers,
Roland.

Mario responds:

Sunith,

I don't know where you're going with this search for
disconnected climate change kaneos, but I'll give you
one based on the mid Atlantic hurricanes of 2005,
which included the infamous Katrina and Wilma. A
British scientist named Sir John Law, obviously one of
those behind the extraordinary interest in the UK, ran
to the microphones after Katrina to proclaim that
global warming, here located in the Gulf of Mexico,
was to blame. Well, not quite. Here are some facts.

There were 28 named storms in 2005. Only six made it
to the mainland at hurricane strehgth, the others
dissipated over the Atlantic. Obviously these did not
hear about Sir John Law or vice versa. Much worse was
predicted for 2006. However, only 11 named storms
developed, 5 reached hurricane strength, and not one
made it to the mainland. The worst and most numerous
hurricanes in the region were between 1880 and 1900,
when human industrial activity was in its infancy.

Earlier this year, 60 prominent Canadian scientists
sent an open letter to their prime minister calling
attention to the limits of modern climate science in
predicting either weather trends or how changes in
human behavior will affect those patterns.
Observational evidence does not support today's
computer climate models, they wrote, so there is
little reason to trust model predictions of the
future. Faulty forecasts of the current hurricane
season are a case in point. So are the doom-and-gloom
models trotted out in support of Kyoto, the scientists
argue. (Source NY Sun Editorial, October 4, 2006)

Your friend's boss should know that Al Gore has a well
known agenda and his sci-fi movie was roundly
condemned by many in the scientific community.

Global climate change is not a new or unique
phenomenon in the history of the earth, and took place
frequently way before human industrial activity began.
Thus, to add some perspective on the issue, I have
listed below a history of global warming, as well as
four articles which contain more than disconnected
kaneos, that should at least raise questions in open

priests do we have to name them and send the list to the bishop? forget
about the tedious process . Its like complaining to the director that his

that because my husband used to file his tax returns and when he bought an
ordinary maruthi 800 with a loan from the bank he used to cry like a baby
because he had to pay around six thousand to the bank and another four or
five to the other bank towards loan of his flat etc etc and nothing in hand
whereas a priest with a emolument of one thousand a month can afford to buy
a car worth three to four lakhs. Can Selma without feeling hurt explain this

[Goanet] Isidore, Loliem panch snub GBA activists

Isidore, Loliem panch snub GBA activists
The Goa Bachao Andolan, which has sparked fireworks of
rebellion against the mindless destruction of ecology
and environment around the state, came in for some
resistance at Loliem when Loliem-Polem panch Ajay
Lolienkar and some others openly decried the presence
of some GBA activists at the Makodshem beach meet
which was attended by over 500 people.
The meet was held on Monday morning following a
unanimous gram sabha resolution to oppose a proposed
bauxite mining project or any other project along the
Loliem coastline.
The former sarpanch Mr Lolienkar questioned the
presence of the GBA activists and said that the people
of Loliem don’t need outsiders to take care of their
internal problems. “We can fight our own agitations,”
he said. Some disturbances by a few local youth were
also felt when GBA convener Adv. Satish Sonak was
addressing the protestors at Xendrem.
The other GBA activists present on the occasion were
Patricia Pinto, Dilip Borkar Dharmanad Vernekar and
Dilip Prabhudesai.
Former Minister and Poinguinim MLA Mr Isidor Fernandes
when asked to comment on Ajay Lolienkar’s comments
about GBA, he said: “DEFINITELY, why do we require
them? We can certainly fight our own battles.” He went
on to add, “We will seek their help if we need.”
Former Sarpanch Mr. Mohandas Lolyekar said that he had
personally invited the GBA activists for their expert
views and that only the “know-alls” claim they don’t
need to hear others. “Or it must be that they were
scared that the GBA experts might reveal some facts to
the masses which could be uncomfortable for them.
Otherwise why fear?” he questioned.
Prashant Naik, Chairman of Shree Nirakar Education
Society which runs the SS Angle Higher Secondary
School a few metres from this site said that, “Every
movement has always been guided and inspired by great
leaders. Ram Monohar Lohia was the soul behind the Goa
freedom movement. What is happening in Loliem is not
an isolated case. It is happening all over the state
be it Quitla, Carmona, Bambolim, Nauxi or Dona Paula.
For a mass movement like this solidarity is the key

“It’s a battle we would do good to fight unitedly to
save our beautiful land. Ajay Lolienkar has a right to
his opinion and if he thinks GBA activists are not
necessary fine, but he should not remain in the
illusion that he is the almighty representative of
Lolienkars. For us, to save our beautiful land from
the sharks of real estate and avaricious politicians
all are welcome,” said a protestor requesting
anonymity.
Many protestors expressed the apprehension that the
mining issue was deliberately stage-managed by vested
interests to cover up what is actually a big hotel
project.
Disagreement surfaced overtly when the protestors
gathered at Makodshem decided to go to Xendrem where a
private party has constructed a resort after illegally
taking possession of communidade land and blocked
traditional access to the beach. The Loliem-Polem
sarpanch Mr Vishvesh Acharya insisted that the protest
should be limited to the mining project.

[Goanet] On Babla Singbal the mathematician - I

Few Goans have heard of the late Babla Singbal, one of India's
distinguished mathematicians. Last year I wrote to Prof. Sivakumar
of the Dept of Mathematics at Texas AM asking if he had
details on Singbal and his work, since Google yields so little
on the man. I am attaching the email thread below.

Warm regards,

Dear Professor Sivakumar,
Indeed, I knew Bobla (Vinayak) Singbal very well. In fact, he along with
Laurent Schwartz and K. Chandrasekharan were the three who interviewed us in
the year 1957 for selection into the TIFR School of Mathematics. Besides,
Singbals were our very close friends. His wife Kalindi (a mathematician
herself) and myself have done some Mathematics together. My wife (who is a
Maharashtrian) was a good friend of Kalindi. Kalindi (after some ten or so
years at the TIFR) worked at the Bombay University department in Andheri
until her very unfrotunate death while delivering her second baby in the
late seventies. Bobla's (one) brother Ranjan was a good friend of mine. He
is a medical doctor and we were in Paris during the year 1962-63.

Now, coming to talk about Bobla: he was a brilliant mathematician and an
extremely intelligent person. It was always a pleasure discussing any number
of topics including a large variety of Mathematics with him. Unfortuntely,
he was also a cynic and never considered anything that he did 'worthy of
publication' and of published very little. However, he was very highly
respected by one and all. Apparently Sammy Eilenberg made a remark after
spending some weeks with Bobla that 'if I had your talent, I would be
publishing a ton of papers every year'. Just think about the following, in
1952, the School of Mathematics took in very few people (I believe two,
Raman and Singbal) and they selected Singbal over Shriram Abhyankar!

Some ten years ago, some friends of Singbal along with the Head of the
Department of Mathematics at a University in Goa, published a small booklet
about Singbal when they also instituted either a prize or scholarship in his
name. I had given some money in that cause and also have the booklet. I
will try to look for it (I moved office a few months ago after finsihing a
term of six years as Chair and my belongings are all in boxes and noted
sorted out yet!). Others who are likely to throw some light on Singbal
include R. Sridharan, S.Ramanan, C. S. Seshadri (all at the Chennai Math Inst)
and M.S. Raghunathan (at the TIFR), M.K. V. Murthy (at Pisa), Pavman Murthy
and R. Narasimhan (U of Chicago). If I could find something more, I will let
you
know. I always had a soft spot for Bobla (both because he was brilliant and
a good friend and was the husband of one of my closest friends, Kalindi).

I trust you are well. I have appended a message received from my younger

friend, Dr. Rajan Parrikar, which is quite self explanatory. As I recall
your mentioning that you were at TIFR in the late 50's, I thought you may

Dear Goanetters
Thanks for the discusion on the goanet Selma and others. Nice way to discuss
on the net point by point. I don't think I am that smart like Selma and
Mario. I was good in debate in School but the debate had to be written by
someone e;dr we had ourEnglish teacher who had patience to write beautiful
debate for me, and train me also and I always took the credit. The chief
guest always took my name as the best speaker and I enjoyed the applauses
while my teacher sat on the last bench and no one had time to remember her.
I love you teacher. .Any way I remembered some posting on the net which
spoke about Fabrica and confrarias. Can someone tell me what is that? Our
padrevigar time again has been saying about Fabrica and Confrariars. MY
hubby said Fabrica means PWD. He does not know portuguese but pretends he
knows all and confrariars were those men dressed with opmus and go in a
procession. Any other function? No one seems to be telling. I would like to
know what is their job, how they get money and what they do with that. How
confrarias function what is their job and how do they get money and how do
they spend. Someone told me that feast and novena collections go to
confrarias and they celebrate the feasts during the year and fabrica does
all church constructions. Who appoints the fabrica? Once our Padre vigar
announced Fabrica elections on so and so date. My husband wanted to join.
Someone told him not to . I do not know why. Please do not have too much
discusions on this posting as i am a bit ignorant on this fabrica and
Confrariars. But a narration will do only if someone knows about it.

[Goanet] RUNNING THE OFFICE IN HIGH SPIRITS

While the politicians seem to be too power intoxicated
to scrap the Goa Regional Plan 2011 some bureaucrats
may be turning to the hard stuff.

The report of the blood sample of a high-ranking
officer of the Goa Administration which had been sent
for analysis yesterday has confirmed presence of
alcohol.

The Chief Inspector of Factories and Boilers Mr. Suhas
Redkar was yesterday picked up from his office by
Vigilance sleuths and taken for a blood test to
ascertain the complaint against him of being under the
influence of alcohol while on duty.

The officer is also a member of the Goa State
Pollution Board and other high-powered government
committees.

A vigilance department team headed by Police Inspector
Rajendra Prabhudesai landed at the Inspectorate of
Factories and Boilers and took Mr. Redkar to the Goa
Medical College for a blood test to ascertain the
alcohol intake.

I have been visiting the directorate of Factories
Boilers to pursue a complaint filed by a workman under
the Factories Act. Mr. Suhas Redkar, who is the head
of the department seemed to be regularly coming to the
office under the influence of alcohol a fact that all
the fifty odd staff of the department are fully aware
of.

Yesterday I brought this to the attention of Chief
Secretary Mr. J.P.Singh and Vigilance Secretary Mr.
Diwan Chand following which the vigilance officers
swung into action.

Goa Public Service Commission had recently recommended
that Mr. Suhas Redkar who is currently officiating for
he last one year be confirmed to the post of Chief
Inspector of Factories and Boilers but the concerned
Minister Mr. Luizinho Faleiro has kept the file in
abeyance apparently for not being happy with Mr. Suhas
Redkar’s conduct.

Now the officer may be in for the much deserved
disciplinary action.

Dr.Jack Sequeira was one of the pillars of the united goans party formed by
Dr.Loyola Furtado. I do not know what happened later and Dr.Loyola left
united goans and formed another party with rising sun. The symbol of the
party (United Goans) was hand. I still remember the elected MLAs though I
was in school. We had Elu Miranda from Benaulim, Adv. Leo Velho from
Navelim, Roque Santan Fernadnes from Cuncolim, Edward Faleiro (can't
remember his constituency) A.N.Naik from Margao I think. (He joined later )
it was first Dr.Loyola Furtado. Jack Sequeira from Santa Cruz, Panjim was MG
first, Orlando Sequeira from Aldona,(joined MG) J.M.D'Souza from Calangute,
.Teotonio Pereira from San Andre,Roque Barnetto (who left and joined MG and
was discarded later by voters) valent Mascarenhas who got elected from
Calangute (later joined MG) The remaining who did not join MG never left the
party till 1982 or 1984 when Dr.Willy was inducted in the party by Panvelcar
and joined congress U under Devras Urs and later joined National Congress
but Jack Sequeira and his son Erasmo joined Janata but never got elected on
that ticket. United goans had also one Narvekar from Mapuca who was a good
speaker. We enjoyed his jokes. Jack Sequeira wanted to become chief Minister
which he did not achieve but he was an honest politicians who only took
what was due to him and nothing else. His dream was to do something good and
great for Goa the dream which remained a dream for ever. He never made
money. He was a medical doctor who could open a clinic may be in Panjim and
made money but he gave up all this for Goa and it was the duty of all his
members of that party who now are in the Congress Government to erect a
statue in Panjim. He fought for Goa but once elected never betrayed his
people for money. I am sure Dr.Lily if she reads this will feel happy that
she is proud daughter of a great father. So also his family and friends.
Viva Jack Sequeira may your tribe increase.

[Goanet] Shilpa Shetty racism row escalates; Indian Govt gets in on the act.

Shilpa Shetty racism row escalates
Rashmee Roshan Lall
[ 17 Jan, 2007 1952hrs ISTTIMES NEWS NETWORK ]

LONDON: The controversy over alleged racism towards Shilpa Shetty by
fellow-contestants of a British reality TV show escalated on Wednesday
with Prime Minister Tony Blair and the Indian government weighing in,
albeit with cautious platitudes and a further 10,000 complaints
flooding into the television regulatory authority and Channel 4.

The total number of complaints now stands at 15,000, making Shetty's
ordeal the most complained-about television show in history.

Angry members of the 1.3-million strong British Indian community told
this paper they were mobilizing furiously to keep up the pressure on
the authorities to take action over the degrading and demeaning
behaviour towards Shetty just because she's Indian, young, beautiful,
successful and well-educated.

While a passionate internet campaign to save Shilpa gathered pace,
cynical TV pundits said the Bollywood star's unexpected first-name
recognition in Britain may actually pay her huge celebrity dividends
once her ordeal ends.

Though C4 largely remained mum about the issue, it backed away from
its previous belittling description of Shetty's bullying at the hands
of three other women contestants as girlie rivalry.

The channel continues to insist Shetty was not called a Paki by one
of the male contestants.

Police in the English county of Hertfordshire, locale of the Big
Brother house, confirmed they are to investigate e mails sent to
Channel 4 containing threats against Celebrity Big Brother housemates.
Police also confirmed receipt of a complaint about racist behaviour in
the house.

Pressure was mounting on C4 to do something about the programme,
which has two weeks still to run, with the show's sponsor Carphone
Warehouse reconsidering its three-million-pound largesse on issues of
taste and decency.

In an unprecedented development for a show that is consistently seen
to be as successful as it is shallow and sexually-degraded, bookmakers
said on Wednesday that they had cut the odds of Celebrity Big Brother
not lasting its scheduled run from 20/1 to 5/2.

British television channels added an interview with Sunanda, Shetty's
mother, in their wall-to-wall coverage of the story. Sunanda, who said
Shetty had agreed not to do any lip-to-lip kissing with male or
females on the show...to cook or eat beef, added that her daughter
was secure inside.

Meanwhile, in a sign of spiralling interest across two continents in
the shenanigans of Shetty's Big Brother housemates, Goan-origin Labour
MP asked Blair in parliament to condemn the outright racism and
xenophobia on the show. Vaz also pointedly asked Blair to remind
broadcasters such as C4 of their duty not to publish any such
prejudices to millions.

Blair responded by admitting he had not seen the programme in question
but unreservedly condemned racism in any form.

British establishment interest in Shetty's woes came as hundreds of
South Asians here started to speak out in sympathy for the actress,
with the additional biting rider that her racial harassment was a
harrowing reminder of the situation they faced in the UK.

Speaking for many British Indians, actress, comedian and writer Meera
Syal lambasted C4's bland response to days of racially-charged
bullying of Shetty. Syal said the show had slipped into vile
spectacle and there is a very thin line between what is
entertainment and a vile spectacle and I think we are in that area
now. She said, What this treatment of Shilpa has done is remind a
lot of Asian people in Britain of the type of uncomfortable treatment
they've received themselves over the years. This is bullying.

She added, I certainly wouldn't have taken as much as Shilpa has
taken. I'm just wondering if on their (C4's) last series (of Big
Brother), for example, the Tourette's sufferer had been called a
'spaz' (or a spastic) on a regular basis, whether they would have let
that continue.

Vaz, whose Leicester East constituency has a heavy concentration of
East African Indians, admitted he had been moved to employ political
dark arts such as parliamentary early day motions because his appalled
constituents had set up a clamour. Vaz's motion read: This House
views with concern the comments made about Big Brother contestant
Shilpa Shetty by other housemates; believes that Big Brother has a
role to play in preventing racist behaviour

Dear Goanetters
Yes BJP is communal. This reminds me of one poster fixed at the table of one
headmaster of a school. I am not that good in remembering word for word but
many of you might have read it. It sounds something like this. I will
reproduce it in my own way. When you are slow you are lazy, disinterested
but when the boss is slow he is methodical. When you are late, you want to
shirk your work, when the boss is late he was out to . Who is to be
blamed for the threat to demolish the masjid? We. What have we done in the
15th century? Were not the hindu temples broken and churches built? This is
what we talk about when we talk about inquisition for which the previous
Pope asked for pardon, then were not we communal ? All of us were hindus and
converted to christianity. Are we not communal when we divide ourselves into
castes? Did we not create the Mars and put them at the border of our
village? Did the church not use them in the past to cook toll or ring bells
and dig the graves? Do we have rignt to do that? God has raised them up and
most of them have gone abroad and done well and we are jealous of them. I
hear many people talking Pedde khuim assa? Tanche bhurge voddle zalet ani
amcam sokla udoilet. Why don't we put our self into their shoes? My daughter
tells me. Mamma Jesus is found there among these people. I admire their
tallents. They are good cooks, good musicians and mat makers.
Amen.

To my mind, the problem is about unresponsive, communal, corrupt politicians
who don't care less about the citizen. The Congress has no monopoly over
such trends[FN]

Well said, Fred. In fact I would go so far as to say, You can say that
again!. Which brings us to a couple of follow up questions. Why cant
reasonably educated people not see this blatant syndrome operating in Goa?
Maybe there are some entrenched biases at work. It may be necesasary to
identify and overcome them as it may only be a symptom and not the disease
itself. The next question: Where is the original sin? I have my pet theory
about this which I have often shared on goanet although that is all too
susceptible to some mental blocks too. But I would be interested to hear if
others have anything original to say in this context. Cheers.
