While endorsing your views completely, I suggest that we also count
married people, spinsters, bachelors, old people, etc. who are all in
Goa for the reasons you so clearly express. And that even includes
'ghantis' like me :-) Hurrah for life in Goa, it's the best!

RECENT ITEMS OF PARTICULAR INTEREST ON GOANET. BY CORNEL DACOSTA

Is it true that, we discover for sure, if there is a God or there
isn't one at the moment of death? There has been quite a discussion
(at times pretty heated) on this issue. Find out more about this from
Goanet.

Take a title like Atheists, Turncoats and Quislings and then imagine
what the subject matter might possibly be. Well, some pretty strong
assertions were made with equally strong refutations re this title on
the links between Catholicism and Goa. The responses to Goanet came
from far and wide and are well worth contributing to.

A substantial article by Anita Haladi and featured on Goanet was
titled All Children are our Children: Can Goa disown these kids? In
brief, the article draws from material presented on 26/9/06 at the
State Convention [India] on Issues Concerning Women and Children. It
focuses on the fact that, while Goa is immensely popular as a tourist
destination, there is another sadder side to it. This is about the
significant number of unskilled and semi-skilled workers drawn from
other parts of India to Goa with young children. These children are
seriously disadvantaged "in the context of child labour, child abuse,
and commercial sexual exploitation." They are denied schooling, basic
health care and live a "marginalized existence." An obvious question
is what can be done about such a sorry plight? Can Goan Voice (UK)
readers offer concrete suggestions to address this state of affairs?"

Do read an interesting article by Miguel Braganza. It is titled Konkan
Curry: Wildlife Hotspots and Biodiversity. Miguel argues for the need
to establish "Goa's status as a biodiversity hotspot, with plants and
animals yet to be discovered, documented, confirmed and named." He
also provides much detail of the many 'explorations' taking place into
such biodiversity.

Find out about handicrafts made out of dry coconuts, coconut shells,
sea shells, cotton thread, clay and related products made by Goan
crafts people. Sometimes, visitors to Goa, including GV (UK) readers
are heard to say that there is little indigenous to Goa that can be
purchased as mementos and gifts for friends and relatives. However,
http://ruralbazargoa.nic.in/ is a site that indicates how much there
is on offer if we only know where to look.

Finally, over the week, do reflect on one of Domnic Fernandes' regular
quotes on Goanet. It simply says "Talk slowly but think quickly."

Churchill to quit Cong by month end
NT News service

Margao, Feb 9 The South Goa MP, Mr Churchill Alemao today revealing his
plans said that by the end of this month he would join a party and
everyone will come to know about it. He would do so to protect the
interest of Goans, the South Goa MP added.

Mr Alemao also confirmed that he had replied to the notice served to him
by the All India Congress Committee general secretary, Ms Margaret Alva
and pointed out that the Congress party in the last one-year had taken
positions on public issues that were against the common interest. No
corrective measures were taken when the deficiencies were pointed out in
the party and therefore he had no option but to go to the public, he
said.

"I am of the firm opinion that any political party exists for the well
being of the people and that is why I have the support of the masses.
All my actions, which are being termed as anti-party, were directed
towards the welfare of the people," he said.

"Basically it was due to the election promises that I made while
contesting as Member of Parliament and which enabled me to get a vast
majority," said Mr Alemao while addressing a press conference, here.
Former MLA and convenor of the Goa State Scheduled Tribes Action
Committee, Mr Antonio Gaunker was also present on the occasion.

Determined to take on the party leadership, Mr Alemao today also called
upon the Scheduled Tribe and OBC voters in the state not to vote for the
Congress party in the coming elections. He said that the Congress had
failed to consider the demands of the STs and OBCs and added that he
would fight to give them justice.

Mr Alemao said that in his letter he also pointed out that the move to
close the Dabolim airport and set up Mopa airport would be against the
interest of the people of South Goa. He said that this was one of the
points on his manifesto that had enabled him to get a huge vote bank.

On the Special Economic Zone, the South Goa MP said he had informed the
general secretary of the AICC that the concept is being misused to
acquire land for private parties.

He said that he has been constantly demanding the introduction of PDS
scheme that would bring a smile to the poor but this has not been
implemented till date. The move to divert the Mhadei river water also
needs immediate attention, he Congress leader said.

Mr Gaunker expressed concern over over the fact that in spite of having
proof of ST population the Goa government was hesitating to implement
the bill.

He said that government decision to conduct another survey of ST
population is only delay tactics of the government not to give benefits
to the original people of this land.

Hi Gabe
I understand that Rommel (whom I met once as a youngster on my travels),
did not manage to pull it off when trying to get into medical school at
Princeton. His former institution, also Princeton, for his first degree,
apparently spotted what he had said about being part black and receiving
financial support from a colony of leppers in Goa for his education. It
therefore obstructed the admission to medical school for this blatant
untruth. The matter went further when Rommel sued Princeton for
interference at the admissions stage and he lost the case. I only found out
all this relatively recently and not from Rommel nor his family. Nor am I
absolutely certain of all these facts because I think Harvard also enters
the picture.

This is a very strange story, but possibly, the very high cost of medical
education in prestigous American institutions may have led to this bizarre
set of events. Possibly, Rommel was seeking the kind of financial support
available only to black students. I say this because I am aware that some
Goans and other Asians in the USA feel quite sore that scholarships are not
available to them when indeed they may be considerably less well-off than
black student recepients. This was, of course, part of the Affirmative
Action policy than in place.

In the circumstances, I hope that we on Goanet can be compassionate when a
Goan like Rommel may have been driven to subterfuge (even when definitely
unethical) in a desperate quest for a medical education. It is a pity that,
somehow, nobody could advise him that he was entirely wrong and very
confused. Indeed, he was perhaps ill with acute anxiety to present such a
daft story to university authorities who would have already known him for
four years!

Christianity Embedded in Indian Culture

By Eduardo Faleiro

During my last term in Parliament (1999-2005) I travelled extensively
throughout the country to understand Christianity in India today. I
met our Cardinals, Bishops and theologians and visited several of our
religious organizations including Jesuit organizations such as the
Vidya Jyoti Theological Seminary in New Delhi, the Sameeksha Ashram in
Kalady, Kerala and the Xavier Centre of Historical Research in Goa.
The theme at these meetings was usually the need for inter-religious
harmony and dialogue in India and the need for greater inculturation.

Asia is the cradle of all the great religions of the world and several
of them were born in India. The Asian religious psyche resonates with
the perception of plurality and the consequent attitude of tolerance.
Jesuit theologian Samuel Ryan asserts, "Pluralism is a grace. No one
person, race, culture, language or religion can grasp and express
exhaustively the will of God."

Jesuit contribution to inter-communal and inter-religious peace and
harmony and to authentic Christianity today begins with their
educational institutions which try to conscientise students on the
value of inter-religious collaboration and instill in them a basic
understanding of and respect for the faith vision of the members of
the diverse local religious communities, while deepening their own
faith response to God.

This contribution continues with the philosophical and theological
formation programmes of the Jesuits, which are geared towards forming
priests for the multi-cultural and multi-religious context of our
country, for inter-communal relationships in modern India, and
commitment to meaningful service of the Faith and Justice among the
various groups of the country, especially the more disfavoured.

Their specialised or more popular publications in every continent
clearly reflect the Jesuits' concerns of these last decades. The
Vidyajyoti Journal Of Theological Reflection is published by the
Jesuits from Delhi and respected in the English-speaking world as a
leading forward-looking and yet most balanced theological review. The
New Leader and Jivan are enlightening and inspiring magazines
publicising views and actions of the Jesuits of South Asia but read
and deeply appreciated in every continent. They promote authentic
Christianity today.

Inculturation is the process by which a particular Church expresses
its faith through the local culture. In India, the purpose is to make
the Church both authentically Indian and genuinely Christian. At the
Asian Synod of 1998 the bishops called for "divesting of the Western
image of the Church in the liturgy, style of life, celebrations and
trying to overcome the present image of a powerful, affluent and
domineering institution".

Fr George Gispert-Sauch, Emeritus Professor at Vidya Jyoti is of
Spanish origin as St Francis Xavier was. He has published two volumes
of the writings of Brahmabandhab Upadhyay. Upadhyay was among the
first if not the first to demand complete independence of India from
the British Raj. He died in jail in October 1907, a martyr of the
freedom struggle. The poet Rabindranath Tagore wrote about him:
"Upadhyay was a sanyasi, a Roman Catholic, yet a Vedantist. He was
powerful, fearless, self-denying; he wielded great influence on those
who came near him. He had a deep intelligence and an extraordinary
hold on spiritual matters." Upadhyay was born into a Hindu vaishnava
family and he converted to Christianity. When asked by a census
official whether he was a Roman Catholic or a Protestant he replied,
"Neither. Put me down as an Indian catholic." The Upadhyay message, as
contained in his writings is simple. He was personally a Hindu by
birth and culture, a Christian by faith and religion. He was a Hindu
Christian. His culture and his faith were both valuable and not in
conflict. There was no contradiction because Hinduism is a cultural
reality. Christianity is a supernatural revelation that can be
expressed in any cultural garb. Fr Gispert-Sauch believes that we
should commemorate this year as the death centenary of Brahmabandhab
Upadhyay. Jesuits have been and continue to be agents of building
healthy, progressive human communities where discrimination of any
kind, including cultural and religious, does not have a place.

Master Compere Allan Pinto to host Cupid's Nite in Kuwait

"Good evening ladies and gentleman..!"

The words are quite synonymous at the start of every party and program. And
the person who draws full attention of everyone is the host and centre of
attraction -- the MC.

The term MC is generally associated with hip-hop music and it originally
meant Microphone Coordinater, but was confused with other definitions as
time went on. Traditionally, an MC uses rhyming verses, whether pre-written
or freestyled, to introduce everyone and praise the bands, DJ, etc, he works
with, and hype up the crowd.

Kuwait Indians will have an opportunity to see and hear the unique glib of
international fame Master Compere Allan Pinto at the Cupid's Nite being
organized by Navelim Youth Centre on 15th February 2007 at Crowne Plaza
starting 8pm onwards.

Allan Pinto, a professional MC, is being specially flown in to pep up the
event featuring Stepping Stones, Deep Impact, DJ WANTED and Seby F of the
Wings fame. A Cha-Cha-Cha dance contest for valentines is also on agenda.

Born on 21st February 1962 at Porvorim, Allan Pinto completed his graduation
in Arts and went on to join the Hotel industry. After a stint of five years
with the hotel trade, he worked for the Travel industry with Pan American
World Airways and later moved on to the courier trade with TNT Skypak
Couriers. Later he took a plunge into the advertising field where he was
exposed to Event Management.

Currently, Allan Pinto is a full time Master of Ceremonies, and part time
Advertising and Insurance Consultant.

Events handled by Allan as Master of Ceremonies include:

Formal Functions: Business sessions of conferences including Lawasia (a
conference of Supreme Court Lawyers of Asia and Australasia); AAFTIN (Asia
Australasia federation of Therapeutic Intraventive Neuro-radiology);
Regional Science Conference), etc.

Training Programmes: Team building sessions for Samsung, Sony BMG, ICICI
Prudential, etc.

Entertainment: India International Seafood Fair evening, Gala Evening
Entertainment for Regional Heads of World Bank Conference, Christmas & New
Year programmes for Radissons, 10th Anniversary Celebrations of D-Link, Fund
Raising Rexband Concert in aid of Help & Help, etc.

Allan has also been a Master Compere for approximately 1500 Catholic
Weddings as of January 2007.

People who want to see a thorough professional in action got to turn up for
the Cupid's Nite to see Allan in action.

Cupid's Nite at Crowne Plaza is being held under the leadership of NYC
President Agnello A.S. Fernandes. The event is Co-Sponsored by Metro
Express, DNATA, UAE Exchange, The Times, and Palm Agro Production Company.

NYC's last dance nite in Kuwait featured a Jive Competition for the first
time at dances which has become a sort of trend in the Gulf now. This year's
Cupid Nite will see NYC organize yet another competition - a Cha Cha Cha
dance contest.

Back home in India, Navelim is one of the few Goan villages having an age
old tradition of 'organized dances.' The popular 'Nite-O-Roses' organized on
the feast of Our Lady of Rosary by Lions Club Navelim has completed 50 years
while the annual 'Festa de Leques' dance on the first day of Carnival held
for almost a century now, is one of the oldest dances organized in India.

Kuwait, Sept 2005: Navelim Youth Centre (NYC) - Kuwait, held it's
traditional grand gala 'NYC Nite' musical evening at the Crowne Plaza.
The evening was full of fun: dancing, partying, enjoying the warmth of
friends and being delighted at every turn. The celebration was a perfect
ambience in the background of fabulous décor and lavish luxury...

...The only enemy that was going to come between the people and the jovial
music and dance was - time. People danced their heart out till it was time
to go. With the crowd not wanting to leave, the party grew progressively
longer going on till the wee hours of dawn.

The Nite was set rolling with local favorites 'Stepping Stones' hitting off

Mr. Colaco,

This is in reply why Goa is a paradise compared to other cities where I
lived.

I'm taking into context that I'm single now and for a single person, Goa is
a very safe place to live, especially in Betim where its been my home for
the last 8 years.

Till the age of 21 years, mostly lived in North India where my father an
officer in the Indian army was posted. Prior to that lived in Bangalore
which was a paradise till I visited it afte 30 years in 2001. I nearly
fainted when I saw what the municipality had done to the beautiful St. Marks
Road where we lived for 5 years.

North India was wonderful. We had lovely bungalows with gardens, coutersy
the Army. Brazil was great when I shifted there in 1969 and returned to Goa
in 1973 (parents had retired and came to live in Goa). It took me some time
to get adjusted having never lived in Goa, but it was lovely. Shifted to
Bombay in 1976 and lived there till we shifted to Delhi in 1988. Delhi is
the worst place. Loved it as a child, hated it as an adult. Mind you,
quality of life is great, wonderful roads, great houses, excellant quality
of food, but the people are the pits, especially the Delhiwallahs, could be
of any community, except for the Rajasthanis and the Sardars. That was the
first time I never felt safe and never took public transport.

But Goa is something else. People are wonderful, you feel safe, nobody
bothers you. Especially after you return from a trip, the local grocer,
postman, fruit vendor, etc. will always greet you with a smile and ask '
had a good holiday'. I'm on permanent holiday for the last twenty years. I
cross the ferry, my cobler with a big smile, 'Madam you're back'. This is
what makes Goa such a special place to live in.

I visited Australia, lived there and travelled for three months. Don't
think I could ever live there, also Singapore.

There are lots of people like me, single, widowed, divorced, women/men who
adore Goa and wouldn't trade it for any other place.

Vhodlem Ghor, Irmao and Dhakto Bhav
Dropping names while explaining Big Brother to South Goans
By Cecil Pinto

I spent the last weekend in South Goa and was astounded at the abysmally
low level of awareness, among some Salcetkars, about current issues and
events. I consider it my civic duty to not only entertain but also to
inform. With this in mind every few weeks I will have a special column,
like this one, to spread awareness, of current topics, in South Goa. Some
words and phrases will be explained in parenthesis (bracketam) for the
Salcetkars. I hope my regular readers (vachpi) will take this additional
reading burden in the spirit of social service.

This week let's examine Big Brother (Vhodlo Bhav), a popular reality TV
show in which for about three months contestants try to win a cash prize
(inam) by avoiding publicly-voted evictions from a communal house (ghor).
It has been a prime time hit in 70 different countries with each regional
franchisee making changes to the basic format (formatu) and adapting it to
a specific country's audience (tiatr poloinar). The name Big Brother comes
from George Orwell's novel (romance) "Nineteen Eighty Four" in which Big
Brother is the all-seeing leader (amdar). The house where the contestants
live has cameras and mikes recording everything, which is then edited and
beamed to the TV audience.

Big Brother is in the news (khobro) because Bollywood actress Shilpa Shetty
is currently a contestant in the UK Celebrity version of the show, and
there were insinuations (bangoddi) that another contestant made some racial
comments to her. What might seem to be a publicity stunt must be seen in
the context of inter-cultural sensibilities and the voyeuristic nature of…
Who!!

Just read those last two paragraphs and realised I'm not making any inroads
into the South Goan mind. I have to try and think like a Salcetkar. Let's
try another approach.

What comes to mind when I say Big Brother and entertainment?

"Churchill?"

No! No! Ok. Let' try a different approach. Think of Small Brother.

"Mickey Pacheco? Sausages?"

No! Agreed Mickey acts like a dhakto bhav but I was trying to explain a
concept. Ok, try this. What is a communal house?

"BJP office?"

Aaaargghhh! Ok. Think of a huge house with some twenty people sequestered
inside for many days. Think of cameras beaming images and sounds from this
house to television audiences.

"Babush Monserate's house and the MLA inmates when the BJP government was
toppled last year?"

Well something like that. Now think of the public being able to phone in
and vote which person gets eliminated from the house for obnoxious behavior.

"Like Philipe Neri was bundled out of the Assembly by the police?"

Similar, but that action did not have public approval or legal sanction.
And Babu Azgaonkar definitely takes the cake for most obnoxious behavior in
the Assembly. His joining the Congress has increased the BJPs decency
ratings considerably. Anyway back to our Big Brother TV show. Remember
these people are in a big house isolated from society.

"Maybe on Faleiro's private island that they showed on NDTV?"

Something like that. There is a representative of the organisers called the
Big Brother who assigns group tasks.

"You mean a central observer like Margaret Alva?"

Sort of. And the public votes out, from the house, contestants who they
feel are undeserving.

"Like elections to the Assembly?"

No. We vote MLAs to the Assembly once in five years and then unfortunately
can't recall them whatever they do. Contestants on Big Brother are
eliminated every week. Remember we can observe all their actions on camera.

"Like when the Assembly is in session? Or like Churchill discussing funds
for mobile libraries?"

A little of both. But in the case of the Big Brother show the contestants
are voted out depending on how they behave. They cannot wiggle their way
out of the consequences of their actions.

"Like how Arlekar and Mandrekar were disqualified from the Assembly?

No! That was a technical issue. Quite frankly, if we follow that technical
route there will be precious few qualified MLAs left. I mean even Sonia
Gandhi held 'office of profit'. But let's get back on track. The TV
audience votes who remains in and who has to leave the House. Big Brother
then evicts that person. Big Brother is just an anchor person but portrayed
as all powerful.

"Like Eduardo Faleiro treating the Global Go

***Rupa Chinai’s report is an eye opener to a critical situation in Goa’s
Education system.

First, we Goans have ourselves to blame for this situation, since we have
virtually allowed successive Governments to -- hijack our education system
and hold our children in “bondage.” We have simply not come to grips of the
dire consequences of this erratic education system that is adversely
affecting our children and compromising their future.

Second, we have our Government to blame: Send YOUR children to the
Konkani/Marathi medium schools, our elected leaders say to the people, while
they send THEIRS to English-medium schools.

I think we Goans, have to OPEN our eyes to this situation, before it takes a
disastrous turn and catastrophic toll on the future of our children in Goa.
Let’s not be complacent on this issue, but take a serious view of the
current situation which is rapidly deteriorating -- with the alarming rate
of students dropouts.

This is exactly what our politicians want – the less educated the populace,
the less opposition to their dirty political games. Our elected leaders are
predictably leading our children to the “dark ages.” Our educated elite of
Goa are silently watching the situation from the sidelines. In the kingdom
of the blind, the one-eyed man is always the king. Let’s not allow our
one-eyed politicians to destroy the future of our children.

The abrupt transition from Konkani and Marathi in

of them drop out of school. Rupa Chinai reports

"Education has become a mess and it is messing up

at standard ten when students move into junior
college. According to Sarva

averaged 60 per cent in class

NRIs fly in - even first class - for Punjab polls

By Jaideep Sarin, Indo-Asian News Service

Jalandhar, Feb 9 (IANS) For a retired postmaster from Britain's
Birmingham city, the temptation to be part of the Punjab assembly
election was too big to resist despite the non-availability of seats
on most flights coming to India.

So Bhagwan Dass Badhan decided to fly first class - even if it meant
paying nearly four times extra. The president of the Indian Overseas
Congress in Britain, he is not the only one eager to be part of
Punjab's colourful electoral scene for the 117 assembly seats. The
polls are to be held Feb 13.

Badhan told IANS here that a group of 55 NRIs from Britain had come
together to support Congress candidates, mainly in the Doaba belt.

The Doaba belt comprising the districts of Jalandhar, Hoshiarpur,
Kapurthala and Nawanshahr districts had seen maximum immigration to
Western countries from Punjab, starting in the early 1940s.

"All flights coming to India from Britain are full. The position of
flights to Amritsar airport is particularly bad. Since I did not get
any ticket, I travelled first class to Delhi," Badhan said.

This group of 55 NRIs, mostly businessmen from all over Britain, is
not the only one actively campaigning in Punjab.

Jaswinder Singh Khangura, who gave up his British citizenship last
year to contest elections here and is the Congress candidate from Kila
Raipur seat near Ludhiana, has his own band of NRI supporters
canvassing for him.

"The total number of NRIs from Britain and the US could be between
1,000 and 1,500. They are very excited about the Punjab election," NRI
Kewal Singh said in Banga town, 40 km from here.

Some of the NRIs have brought their wives and families along to give
them a feel of the election in Punjab and also get them to campaign
for candidates.

Having seen elections in their adopted countries, the NRIs feel more
at home with the electoral scene here.

"NRIs definitely help in campaigning as people in villages listen to
them. The village folk here think that NRIs have seen the world and
can judge candidates better," said Jasbir Singh, a supporter of a
Congress candidate in Jalandhar.

The NRIs also help candidates with money - an investment they think
they can reap if the candidate wins and comes to power.

"Most leading candidates are millionaires themselves and don't need
financial help. But they are so shameless that they want to get hold
of every single dollar or pound offered to them," said another
London-based NRI, requesting anonymity.

The NRI donation this time, in cash and kind, is expected to touch Rs.1 billion.

The expatriates, however, may not be entirely happy with the
distribution of tickets done by the ruling Congress and the Shiromani
Akali Dal.

"We feel that some of the tickets were wrongly given away. But we will
keep supporting our party candidates," Badhan said.

To the goanetters
According to my husband my father in law was a strict person. He was the
tiger of the house ready to punch anyone who did not listen to him. There
was nothing like night parties, visiting the bars etc but the father in law
that I had seen was entirely different person. My children loved him very
much and if at all I had to punish my children I had to do when he was not
around for surprisingly he would shout at me for being harsh to my chidren.
"Kitem go tancam martai tum, tim amchim mottiam (jewels) tumi zannat mu go

used to keep quiet but sometimes I would tell him that he is spoiling my
children.I was a working woman then and would leave my children in their
care, and the children used to be very happy. My father in law was the
victim of their play. He would lie on the mat and they would hit him, punch
him, pull his hair and he would not grumble. My mother in law looked after
the kitchen very well and feeding the kids. Not one day did they grumble
.One day my father in law passed away.I felt that my house had lost its
foundations. I was happy that my mother in law was there at my side. Later
on I felt the tremble on her legs and left my good job to be with her. My
children were also growing and needed me. Though my mother in law should
symptoms of old age and ill health, I did not grumble but gave thanks to God
for giving me such a nice mother in law. she was engulfed in various
sickness that made her old. She lay in bed for five years and though work
was becoming unbearable specially cleaning her up, my children started to
put their hands in the work and made it light. It was God's work. What
satisfaction I got in my home was the feeling that my mother in law found
love in our home. We were there to love her.

Goa on the Brink: a photo exhibition

by Naguesh Sardessai

Rajan Parrikar might be an electrical engineer working with
the rational and logical side of the brain but the current
exhibition of photographs titled 'Goa On The Brink' put up
at the Peoples High School premises, Panaji, brings to light
the emotional and caring person in him.The very first
exhibit, showing a hapless canoe caught in the rough sea
with no helping hand in sight, symbolically represents the
current state of Goa and the dangerous possibilities.
'Precariously poised in turbulent water, desperately in need
of help, abandoned by its caretaker as the sharks close in'
is the accompanying line speaking for the aforementioned
picture, which is shot from a height giving it a dramatic
feel.

The captions underneath each of these photographs accentuate
the message and heighten the impact it is meant to deliver.
Rajan, a thoroughbred Goan, was alarmed at the disturbing
trend of the pristine and luscious Goan landscape hacked and
defaced to give way to ugly concrete blobs and townships
which can put pressure on the already burdened and
inadequate basic infrastructure and services. "And all this
is sacrificed at the altar of 'Development'," says Rajan
with contempt and disappointment. "I decided to document the
surviving Goa for my own sake."

"The roots of cancer eating away at Goa today," Rajan
pontificates, "can be traced to the ill-conceived and
harebrained policy, first hatched in the 1980s of putting
all of our economic eggs into the tourism basket." So very
true that the selling of Goa to every Tom, Dick and Harry
hastened the process of milking the last existing paradise
in India, totally dry. The cascading effect has snowballed
into a major law and order problem, with what have you,
right from pimps, to hawkers, squatters, beggars, petty
criminals, migrant labours and accompanying slums dotting
over the Goan landscape.

The exhibition moves in a systematic sequence with each
worthy aspect of Goa photographed, framed and displayed in a
lyrical form. Paddy fields titled 'Soul of Goa', is followed
by 'Flesh and Blood' showing forest and rivers and 'Harmony
Of The Spirit' has the beautifully illuminated Saligao
church standing out from the impenetrable darkness of the
night. The others show temples and mosque.

What follows after these and few more enchanting photographs
is a series of disturbing pictures of Goa battered, bruised
and methodically raped. The most poignant picture, which
inaugurates this line of works, is of 'Odxel Chapel'
enveloped by darkness aptly captioned 'Lengthening Shadows'.

Rajan, an amateur photographer, has captured the hurried
transformation of Goa into a concrete jungle with the ease
of a pro using canon digital SLR. Each of the photographs is
an example in clarity, quality, strategic angle and neat
composition. 'Haircut' and 'Re-Colonising Goa' represent the
denuding of hills and arrival of foreigners respectively.

The concluding photographs and the accompanying captions
sends a fear gripping in the viewers. Isolated, but left
untouched and standing proud in the pristine surroundings,
the small temple from Nerul asks 'How Long...?'. And the
last picture, of a setting Sun giving way to darkness,
titled 'Goa's Future' gives a really hard parting shot. 'Are
we going to allow the Sun to set on amchem sundar goem?
Rajan asks with pain in his heart and hope. The photographs
will be on view till February 13.

Dr. U. G. Barad ushakal at sancharnet.in wrote wrt Shilpa, Big Brother the
following about Keith Vaz and the UK

(excerpted)

1: Racism has always been a part of the milieu in UK since centuries.

2: So much so that UK government is reluctant to make the non-EU nationals
a part of the UK

3: Goan-origin Keith Vaz who is also a Labor Minister of Parliament in UK

4: Were (Where) was Keith hiding when British Government asked 30,000 plus
Indians that included over 15,000 Medical Professionals to leave UK who had
left their mother country India years ago to work in UK under the Highly
Skilled Migrants Programme (HSMP)?

=

jc's response:

re # 1: I agree with Dr. Barad. Racism has 'been a part of the milieu in UK
since centuries'. The same, I submit has been the situation in the US,
Europe and India. Man has somehow found one way or another to discriminate
against another - race(colour/caste) being one of them.
http://www.colaco.net/1/caste.htm

re # 2: This statement is quite vague. Depends what 'part of the UK' means.
Having said that, this situation is not about race but about Nationality.
One could be of ANY race, if one is an EEA national, one gets first choice
in the job market. That, I submit does not fall under racism. That falls
under EU+EEA law. Anybody who claims 'racism' is probably unaware.

re # 3: I suppose that there is a typo here. Keith Vaz is not a Minister in
the UK

re # 4: And what was Keith to do? and on what basis his race?

There are two points to remember in this situation which has caused
significant stress and disruption to non-EEA individuals irrespective of
race. (Goan physicians with EU nationality,British nationals of Indian,
Indian physicians with EU spouses had no problems - did they? So what is
this Racism nonsense?)

a: The British authorities goofed up (as is being increasingly expected of
Govts) in the implementation of this EU/EEA regulation. It is not something
that just popped up. EU regulations/directive have quite a generous time gap
between 'bill',acceptance/issuance and date for individual country
implementation.

This goofing up might be the basis upon which the Judicial Review might
succeed.

b: Groups representing Indian physicians unfortunately used the racism card
to forward their case. And yet, they could have used the "unreasonable
because of short notice & lack of consultation with representative bodies
etc" position to make the case.

Fortunately, the British Medical Association followed a reasoned approach
and one which may have benefited from serious legal counsel.

Accordingly, one can envisage the following:

1: Physicians with signed employment contracts will be entitled to the terms
of their contracts being met.

2: As non-EEA or non-resident doctors are no longer "permit free" as of
April 2006, their respective Trusts (which run the hospitals) will have to
apply for their work permits. This application will only be approved if
'there are no suitable EEA nationals to take up the post in their stead'.

3: Exemptions will be accorded to non-EEA nationals who are graduates from
UK medical schools; don't know how they can legally proceed with this point
on the basis of present EU/EEA regulations.

4: non-EEA physicians (irrespective of race) with refugee status will not
require work permits.

Another point which nonEEA/EU physicians can utilise - and that depends
entirely on the contracts they have signed with their employers. IF, they
have been put through the grinder (and it is a grinder) before being
admitted into the "higher professional training" program, and led to believe
that they would be (barring misconduct or other violations of contractual
terms)able to complete their training, they have a good case in their
favour.

5: Those physicians (unofficially circa 5000) who were floating around in
the UK - doing the odd two weeks locum SHO here and the three week locum SHO
there .may wish to join the group which shouts "Racism" ...or open a
Curry House. They must know that SHO (senior House Officer aka dog) posts
will be phased out in the UK by the third quarter of 2007.

One final point, and that relates to Shilpa, TATA et al: If one is wealthy,
famous and worth something, one will find lots of cousins, uncles, and
politicians who will want to be a friend or relative.

I'd like to recommend we see (if we can get a hold of it) Saving Grace
starring Tom Cont

Groomed, greying or gay?
Letting your hair down in Goa
By Cecil Pinto

Why are a phenomenal number of seemingly normal Goan men suddenly
experimenting with the weirdest of hairstyles? Up until some five years
back one would be hard pressed to find a Goan man with an unconventional
hairstyle. The only hair-laughs one got was if the wind blew a thin long
wisp of well oiled and combed-over hair and revealed a camouflaged bald
head. This accident looks even more bizarre if the wisp was combed in the
side-to-top fashion as opposed to a back-to-front. And of course the
traditional hair-laugh was when a guy washed his wig at home, instead of
dry cleaning it, and ended up with what looked like a layer of fresh
cowdung (imbedded hay and all) on his head.

But male hair-laughs today are abundantly available. Can someone also
explain to me why Goan young (and sometimes middle aged!) men, who all
these years were quite content with their natural hair shape and colour,
have suddenly taken to dyeing and streaking and yes even re-bonding. I
thought male-bonding had to do with drunken nights, lifelong friendships
and camaraderie, and not with unsuccessful attempts at trying to look like
Dhoni. And high-lights were what you saw in Miramar, at the end of a long pole.

Ok! Ok! You want to ask why I chose male and not female hairstyles, which
have so much more scope for poking fun at. It started of with a simple
visual survey I conducted on 18th June Road, to authenticate my gut feeling
that an overwhelming majority of women who get their hair straightened are
overweight! I counted thirty seven overweight women with artificially
straightened hair (They call it 're-bonding' I think. A nice slogan for a
beauty salon would be "Bond with the best!") before I came across one thin
woman. Even she, on closer examination, proved to me a malnourished beggar
woman with hair matted from lack of hygiene rather than from a beauty
parlour. What is it about fat women that makes them think that
straightening their hair will make them look slim, or in any way less
unattractive?

So I wrote a column about fat women and how they use the most bizarre hair
and beauty products, and clothing and accessories, to take away from their
lack of physical appeal. After penning down my thoughts and observations I
took a moment to contemplate for myself how many close female friends and
relatives I have who were overweight, and hence in the spectrum of the
column. On afterthought, in the interests of self-preservation, I tore the
column and threw it out. Discussing male hairstyling frivolities does not
place one's life in grave danger.

Time was when the average Goan male just walked into the nearest barber
shop and asked for a haircut. Read my lips, hair c-u-t, not hair
s-t-y-l-i-n-g. One had three choices - medium, short or shave it all off!
Only if one had an important occasion to attend in the next few days one
could take the 'trim' option, which unlike the standard hair-cut, did not
leave you looking like a hedgehog for a week. At the age of nine I once
took the liberty of having a 'trim'. On reaching home I was promptly
marched back to the barber by my indignant mother who shouted at him and
made him give me the usual 'short'cut. This embarrassing episode was one of
the most traumatic moments of my childhood and probably explains why till
date I have never been able to grown my hair long.

Most barbers were very much Goan natives till somewhere in the 1980's when
these guys from Andhra Pradesh migrated in. They brought in two
innovations. One was a head massage incorporated into the post haircut
session. The other was this glossy colour poster (printed in Sivakasi) with
photos of men sporting different types of hairstyles. An advanced version
had Hindi film stars. I suppose a Goan equivalent of that poster would not
have been possible because the only styling then prevalent was the frontal
'puff' which was made popular by tiatrists. A few daring individuals did
try the Afro but were unpopular with tiatr audiences because they blocked
the view. Of course in the 1980s also came the popular 'ape cut' following
the Amitabh Bachchan phenomenon. Those years saw a lot of angry-young-men,
mostly angry on realizing that just growing their hair over their ears made
them look more like orangutans and less like the Big B. Hairstyles reverted
back to basic versions of the crew-cut - and a

The fresh face Heta Pandit looks at you out of page 5 of the GT today like
the pretty girl on the next door balcony. That is the image I have of her at
the first "Fontainhas Festival" five years ago. I was not a member of the
Goa Heritage Action Group [GHAG] then and was looking at the festival as an
'outsider'. It was good as a festival. As a first time event in a then
decaying 'Latin quarter' of Panaji, it was just great.

The old "People's High School" building was then on the verge of collpse.
Today, Jack and Miriam Sukhija, have breathed life into it and 'Geetanjali'
[as the building has been renamed by the grandson of Dr. Jack Sequeira, the
Father of the "Opinion Poll"] is a happening place for Art lovers and Book
worms. My "chai" shop at the beginning of Rua de Natal is a bright
Ultramarine blue and white like the frothy sea in the morning instead of a
drab, faded cream walled structure. They are symbols of a new lease of life.
So is the easy smile on Linda's face at "Viva Panjim" restaurant when she
entertains the cream of tourists who visit this area now. There is so much
to see.

The one and only music sensation, Remo Fernandes [now a Padmashree awardee],
sang to his heart's content, starting with his first song "Love you till I
die" from the "Beat-4" era of Simla and Panama Beat Contests during Summer
on the Calangute beach in the 1970s to the latest Brazilian song "Alma"
[Soul] with the Hindi film hits "O Meri Munni" ,"Humma" and "Pyaar ka
Signal" from film Bhagambag enroute...and "Maria Pita-shem " with the
Konkani Medley to end it all. Remo performed for free. He was truly a part
of the celebration of life at FFOTAS...the Fontainhas Festival of the Arts.

Remo had reason to be happy. Heta had just released his latest music video
"Muchacha Latina" [meaning Latin Girl] with lyrics in English and Hindi sung
with a Latin accent. The video is set in the streets of Fontainhas. Said
Remo, "They may call her an 'Outsider' , a non-Goan or a "Bhaillem" but the
truth is that Heta Pandit has saved Fontainhas from the apathy of Goans."
Even her critics will grant her thatthough they may insist on calling
her names, as well.

Prakash Kamat of "The Hindu" newspaper asked Remo what it felt like to
receive the 'Padma Shree' award from the President of India. Said Remo, "It
is a very humbling experience. I am grateful to the Government of India for
recognising my talent and contribution...when I am yet to receive any
recognition from my own state of Goa or from the music fraternity in India."

This was just a part of the programme on stage at the Ralino Square near
Precy Building and Vivenda Souza. there was music by other groups before and
after Remo. There was live music on another stage near St.Sebastian chapel.
In between the two stages were a host of artists and photographers
displaying their works of Art, either in the street or in the heritage
houses within hugging distance of each other on either side.

In the street opposite the Fundacao Oriente, on Rua Felipe Neri, is the Food
Court with tasty Goan and Malvani fare. One can relish Sanna-vodde with
Sorpotel, eat Chorico-pao or dig into kombdi-vada, masala fish or even a
vegetarian fare.

If you are in Goa anytime up to 13 February, 2007, do not forget to drop by
fonmtainhas in the evenings. The best time to visit is sunset and after. The
event then moves on to the INOX Courtyard for the Wine Festival [13 to 15
February] and on to the Carnival [17 to 20 February]. It is an extended
season for Bacchanaliaso drink responsibly. There after it will be the
electoral carnival to elect Goa's King Momo and the other clowns.

Hi Miguel,

We have a lot of Dhedd Shannos in Goa and yet very few Goans in IIT. That is
why you are way off mark by classifing Manohar Parrikar as a Dhedd Shanno.
He stands head and shoulders above all Goa Politicians today in terms of
political, administrative skills and intellectual capacity. He is at least
DOBRAD SHANNO if not more !

For the greater good of our beloved Goa, he should be elected Chief Minister
of Goa without any more discussions about did and dat and all the GOAN GOON
GOON CHORS of Congress like Father and Son Rane and the Unholy Trinity of
Mickey Pacheco, Churchill and Joaquim Alemao should be gone after the next

the needs of the IT industry. Then all foreign and Indian IT firms will
flock to Goa and provide high paying jobs for Goans. Then we will have
surely attained Goa Dourada (Golden Goa) ! Its that simple ! One does not

Interesting crime report on today's Mid-Day of Bombay

Sob story and fake cash...
   By: Yogita Rao
   February 8, 2007

A patient and his family were duped in the lobby of Lilavati Hospital,
Bandra, on Tuesday. The con man fooled Roque Fernandes and his kin
into handing over Rs 79,000 to him.

Fernandes arrived at the hospital at 8.30 am on Tuesday to get
admitted for an operation scheduled for today. He was accompanied by
his granddaughter Samantha Menezes and her aunt Rosy Menezes.

They were waiting in the lobby, when a man talking in Konkani on his
cell-phone sat beside them. Since the family was also talking in
Konkani, the man, who identified himself as Sunil Salgaonkar, struck a
conversation with them.

"He spoke Konkani fluently and pretended to be from Goa. He knew
almost everything about Sholi and Mapsa (in Goa) and also claimed to
be the owner of a travel agency that we had heard of," said Fernandes.

To make his story seem genuine, Salgaonkar said his brother was
admitted on the first floor for kidney treatment and was in a critical
condition.

He asked Rosy if there was a good priest in the area to perform the
last rites. Salgaonkar even went upstairs to check on his brother at
regular intervals.

But, most importantly, during the course of the conversation,
Salgaonkar found out the amount of money the victims had with them.

Concern

"Salgaonkar also told my grandfather to send me back home, as hospital
procedures are time-consuming," said Samantha. At around 12.15 pm,
after Samantha left for home, Salgaonkar brought a bundle from outside
and gave it to Fernandes. He said it contained Rs 1.5 lakh and asked
Fernandes to keep it in his bag, saying, "It will be safe in your
bag."

Added Rosy, "Around 1 pm, he came to us with a grave face and said his
brother had passed away. He asked me to accompany him to get some
help. As we were about to get into an auto he asked me to wait for a
minute and went back in. After waiting for a while, I got out to check
what was keeping him, only to find he had left with our money."

In the hospital

While Rosy had been waiting, the cheat had approached Fernandes. Said
Fernandes, "He said he needed Rs 79,000 urgently. When I took out his
bundle, he asked me to keep that with me and give him my money
instead.

"He said since his bundle was packed up, it would take longer. He even
joked that since I had his Rs 1.5 lakh, he wouldn't run away with my
money. Also the fact that Rosy was with him, made me comfortable about
giving him my money." Fernandes and Rosy later realised that
Salgaonkar's money was actually a bundle of newspapers cut in the
shape of notes.

CCTV grabs

A complaint was lodged at the Bandra police station. Said S G Parab,
the investigating officer, "We have got the CCTV grabs from the
hospital, but we are not able to get a clear picture of the cheat from
it."

A security official from the hospital said, "It is not our fault. The
victims should have been more careful with their money." Meanwhile,
the family has postponed the operation as they are falling short of
money.

Moral of the Story:

fact, Goans from other parts of the world come down to Goa whenever they
can and do their bit for the place of their birth; the malcontents in
Australia stay where they are, and spew their venom at us.

What is it about some (and I repeat, some) Goans in Australia that makes
them this way? Could their geographic location make them see things upside
down?

Dear Victor,

You took the words out of my mouth. A certain vociferous section of
Australian Goans are so warped in the mind in their attitude to India,
vis-a-vis Goa, that one wonders if it does indeed have some geographical
connection. Or perhaps the circumstances of migrating to Australia are
different than migrating to other countries? Or maybe the state of the
Australian economy? Perhaps some non-bigoted Australian Goan will speak up
and explain why this statistical abnormality occurs?

At the last GoaNetters meet in December two Australian Goans were spitting
anti-India venom and were so antagonistic in their approach to a social
meeting that they put a bad taste in everyone's mouth. One of them (I think
his name was Damian) even proudly claimed that he was not a GoaNetter but
insisted on (being present and) authoritatively telling all GoaNetters
present (including the founder Herman) how they should run their house. The
other, Oscar, was more broad based and wanted to tell Goans in Goa how to
run their lives and businesses. Neither seemed particularly qualified to
dole out such advice and definitely created a pathetic impression of
themselves, and Australian Goans in general.

Cheers!

Cecil

<"If inland waterways are properly harnessed, they will provide a quick,
comfortable and economical transportation facilities for both passengers and
cargo traffic," said the"Report of the House Committee on Remedial Measures
to Improve Transport System in Goa" (1994).>

This is a good example of a bright idea. But how much do we know about such
transportation systems on the Amazon, Danube, Ganga, Nile, Rhine, Yangtze
and Zambezi rivers to name just a few biggies? Also how much do we know
about such systems in use in cities like London, New York, Venice etc. In
Goa itself there are a variety of operating models such as ore
transportation, river crossing ferries, boat cruises, casinos and floating
restaurants. A comprehensive analysis should uncover the promsies and
pitfalls of what is being suggested on goanet. Anybody game for it?

Hi Victor
I too began to speculate on the pretty odd things coming from some Goans
from Down Under/OZ/Australia/Australasia on to Goanet.

As I have some very sane friends in Australia, I don't think it is the
isolation of Australia (22 flight hours from UK for instance) that is making
some of them see the world in a rather strange way. I reckon that people do
not basically change but only take their prejudices with them when
emigrating to different destinations.

However, cultural isolation anywhere and perhaps in Australia in particular,
helps some people to further internalise their prejudices because they are
less exposed to a greater variety of opinion as in diversified cosmopolitan
environments. This may also be true for a large country like the USA where
apart from the East and West coasts, and some small pockets elsewhere, it is
pretty embarrassing to hear the views of some of those isolated somewhere in
the middle and who are invariably fed, almost entirely, through commercial
channels, by an adulterated right-wing media and a strong "me" culture.

This also makes me wonder whether Goanetter Mario who is now in Goa will
note the considerable variety of opinion in Goa/India because of a generally
well informed/educated public in relation to international issues like Iraq
and quite unlike that from within his normal cocoon in the American Rust
Belt? Thankfully, he will also have access to BBC NEWS 24 which is quite
well received and appreciated in Goa/India for authenticity, quality news
and opinion, and also for football and cricket coverage.
Speculatively,
Cornel
PS Some of my academic colleagues in the USA, as in Florida, desperately
watch BBC News 24 to keep their sanity from relentless American commercial
TV which they consider to be absolute garbage. Sorry Mario!

Thank you, Santosh - course, Dominic is right! Just trying to get a rise out
of him - the betting at our last GNAT dinner was that I couldn't ! Even our
most eminent Goan author present (not VRR!), opined that Dominic never
favours anybody with a reply. Thank you too, Dominic - your vast erudition
on Goem, surpasseth human understanding. Now that I have your attention:

Does Goan culture/folklore actually contain all these thousands of proverbs/
idioms/sayings, you've quoted daily, in Konkani, for the last few years as
'Aichea Disak Chintop'? If so, the mind boggles, at our vast mother-lode,
compared to other cultures!! If not, do you source these yourself, render
them colloquially, and then reverse-engineer? No harm in that, except perhaps
essentially they would not be 'ours'. As in the present case "sott korun
chint" which you’ve presented colloquially, though examples exist elsewhere:

http://www.senate.chula.ac.th/self_managed.ppt#273,18,Slide 18

Do not be alarmed at my query. I love your daily quotes, look forward to
many more. Mine is just a curious, logistical inquiry. You will excuse me
for sounding irreverent. Just a quirk. I could never be a writer like you!

I tried writing a histoire on the rigged 1963 elections, titled it "Me-Lov-
It", and sent it off to NY. Imagine my surprise a few weeks later, to find
my novella set back 30 years, the new author even reversing my dear title
("Me-Lov-It" became "Ti.voL.eM"!)and it was climbing the NY Times best-
seller list! Ah well, I gave the few dog-eared copies of "Me-Lov-It" to Goa
Sudharop's George for Mervyn's next X'mas raffle. That's irreverence.

The dear one who writes so oFN, invites me to join his group, never follows
up - mebbe thinks I'm not a write-r, just a wrong-er, haha! Do you, Dominic?

Kind regards,
Francis.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Timeline_of_Goan_history

This is a timeline of Goan history. It overlaps with the histories of
other regions in South Asia, the (Indian subcontinent), and colonial
powers that influenced the region, including Portugal.

[edit] Pre-Portuguese rule in Goa (before 1510)

* 10 December 1510 Afonso de Albuquerque accepts the surrender of
the forces of Yusuf Adil Shah

[edit] Portuguese rule, including Estado da India (1510-1961)

* 6 May 1542: 36 year old Basque, Francis Xavier from Navarre,
Spain arrives in Goa.
* 1545 – João III of Portugal orders João de Castro to establish
schools for Christian doctrine (escolas de doutrina) in the villages
where students were taught music (solfeggio), violin and the organ in
addition to the three R's. This music (which was wholly religious) was
taught for congregational participation during Church services. In the
19th century these village schools became known as Parish Schools
(escolas paroquiais). Early exposure to and love for music produced
many Goan musicians who were recognized internationally for their
ability to play all genres of music; 19th century Salcete became the
birthplace of the Mando a particularly Goan form of song dance.
* 3 December 1553 – Francis Xavier dies off the coast of China
* 1556 D. João Nunes Barreto, the Patriarch of Abyssinia (roughly
corresponding to the current-day Ethiopia)introduced the printing
press to Goa; situated at the Jesuit College of Saint Paul at Old Goa,
it was the first in all of Asia. The first book published that year
was called Conclusiones Philosophicas.
* 1557, a year later, the printing press published its second
book, Catecismo da Doutrina Christã, posthumously, five years after
the death of its author, St. Francis Xavier. The Patriarch of
Abyssinia, a title extinct since long, was residing in Goa at the time
and offering his episcopal services till the appointment of the next
Archbishop of Goa, D. Gaspar Leão Pereira in 1560.

* 21 April 1651 Birth of Father Joseph Vaz, who would,
three-and-half centuries later, become the first Goan to be beatified
(on 21 January 1995). He was solemnly proclaimed the Patron of the
Archdiocese of Goa and Daman on 16 January 2000.

* 1662 - Canonization of St. Francis Xavier, still a figure of
widespread devotion among Goa's Catholic population, who is known to
Goans as Goencho Saib

* 5 August 1787 - Denunciation of the Conspiracy of Pintos, an
event in which a section of the local population sought to fight
Portuguese rule in Goa.. Curiously, Fr. José Vaz from Anjuna was among
the priests denounced and detained.

* 21 December 1821 Goa's first newspaper Gazetta de Goa was
published by the Government printing press in Goa, the Imprensa
Nacional which was an official government document containing local
and international news.
* 29 October 1826 the Government suspended its publication
* 27 May - 6 June 1835 - Bernardo Peres da Silva, first native
prefect (governor) of Portuguese India, was expelled by the militia of
white descendents in Goa and the fleet departed from Bombay (now
called Mumbai) .While in exile, he sought financial aid from Rogerio
de Faria, a Goan opium baron and set out with an expeditionary force.
However, because of miscalculation of the monsoons, the fleet was
destroyed upon the rocks of Vengurla. Despite this stumbing block,
Peres da Silva won re-election for three subsequent terms to the
Portuguese Parliament in Lisbon. Though he expressed unhappiness
because his fellow members of parliament ignored him and were often
absent during his pleas for the civil rights of Goa and Goans, he did
not cease to campaign for Goa. He is buried in the cemetery of
Prazeres in Portugal.
* 13 June 1835 to 30 November 1837 a government journal the
Chronica Constitucional was published
* 7 December 1837 brought into existence the Boletim do Governo do
Estado da India a weekly paper which was later renamed the Boletim
Oficial do Estado da India. It remained a weekly from September 1879
and April 1880 when it came out three times a week until 1 May 1882.
It became a daily paper until November 30, 1887 when it once again
reverted to its three times a week status until 1897 and finally twice
a week. In 1899 the paper did not carry any news or historical items.
* 5 November 1842 Escola Medico-Cirurgica de Goa was established.
This was probably the first medical school of Western
