[Goanet] [WildGoa] Save the Frogs! Do your part as a volunteer
--- CONVENTION OF THE GOAN DIASPORA FROM GOA INTO THE WORLD Lisbon, Portugal June 15-17, 2007 Details at: http://www.goacom.org/casa-de-goa/noticias.html --- Hello Goanetters, The monsoons are just a few days away, and the first unseasonal shower that occurred here in Benaulim has got me up and writing this urgent mail out to you all. For centuries, at this time of the year in Goa, various species of frogs come out of hibernation to celebrate the arrival of the monsoons and play their part in the transformation of dry fields into nature's orchestra of croaks, cricket creaking, thunder and of course, the sound of rain. Its unfortunate that misinformed and misguided locals hunt these frogs for meal that not out of necessity, but because its considered as an exotic delicacy. Frogs are often blinded by torches, clubbed, thrown into sacks by the hundreds and sold to unethical restaurateurs that simply skin and cut of their legs while they are alive and leave them to die a slow and painful death. Over the last 2 years, WildGoa volunteers have gone into the fields stopping poachers though nonviolent means of information, education and politeness. They have had a tremendous success rate and encouraged by the response over the last two years, we plan to continue this year too, with more volunteers, and with your support of course. Join us for a meeting at locations mentioned below for an informal meeting on how to go about it, or just support the cause by your presence. See you there! [Goanet] [JudeSundayReflections] Pentecost Sunday
--- CONVENTION OF THE GOAN DIASPORA FROM GOA INTO THE WORLD Lisbon, Portugal June 15-17, 2007 Details at: http://www.goacom.org/casa-de-goa/noticias.html --- 20-May-2007 Dear Friend, We have all met people who are enthusiastic about something or another. Whatever it is that they are enthusiastic about there appears to be a passion, a fire that has taken hold of them which they cannot restrain, it spills over and all can feel it. God can bring about newness in us if we let his Spirit take over our lives. Let him in! Have a blessed weekend letting the Spirit enthuse our daily life. Fr. Jude Sunday Reflections: Pentecost SundayCome Holy Spirit and renew. 27-May-07 Readings : Acts 2:1-11; Romans 8: 8-17;John 14:15-16, 23-26; On the fiftieth day of Easter, (which is what Pentecost means) the Jews of Jesus' time recalled the gift of the Law on Sinai. In this context, the gift of the Spirit, the birth of the Church, and the salvation of all mankind in Jesus Christ the Christian Pentecost is presented by Luke as the promulgation of the new law, and the beginning of the mission of all men. The narrative from the Acts is full of signs and symbols of the gift of new life given to all mankind. There are the strange sounds that all heard, the tongues of fire that descended and rested on each one, and the gift of tongues so that all spoke the language of love, understood by all peoples. Pentecost is truly a divine gift, which has to be gratefully accepted by all. Speaking the same language Almost hundred years ago Dr. Zamenhof, a Polish linguist, constructed a new language that could be shared by people throughout the world. The artificial language Dr. Zamenhof created is called Esperanto, "the language of hope." The name signifies hope for humankind that a common language might heal the divisions that exist among the different peoples of the earth. -The feast of Pentecost is the Church's celebration of her unity and universality in the Holy Spirit, and so some of the readings used express this in terms of language. Dr. Zamenhof's invention of a universal language like Esperanto has been followed by: establishing the United Nations Assembly, holding of Summit meetings, having cultural exchanges and reviving Olympic Games. But Pentecost is more than a work of human creation, more than a work of art and music. Pentecost is a new outpouring of God's Spirit into our hearts to kindle in us the fire of his love. Albert Cylwicki in 'His Word Resounds' In the second reading from Paul's letter to the Romans, Paul reminds us that thanks to the Spirit, the power of the resurrection is already at work in our lives. The Spirit helps us to rid ourselves of the power of sin and to live as the family of God. We do not have to follow our sinful inclinations and evil tendencies provided we listen and follow the promptings of the Spirit. Above all the Spirit gives us the power and the possibility of calling God by that most intimate of terms, 'Abba Father.' We cannot only call God our Father but we can live as his favoured children. Paradoxically, thanks to Jesus, we have the right to call God our Father. Carnal versus Spiritual There was once an Eskimo who used to take his two dogs for a bet-fight in the town square. One was a black dog the other was white. The people gathered week after week to see the dogs fight and betted heavily. On some days the black dog won and on others the white. No matter which dog won, the Eskimo made money. The secret behind duping the people was that he would feed the dog which he wanted to win well.- Do you feed your spiritual self and keep it strengthened to win over the carnal person? "For I delight in the law of God after the inward man, but I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members" (Rom 7:22-23) Daniel Sunderaj in 'Manna for the Soul' In today's gospel Jesus reminds his disciples that a true follower cannot be contented with words, he must express his love for Christ by keeping his commandments, in order to live as Jesus lived. We cannot on our own strength keep the commandments of God, for sin and its consequences affect our lives and we remain in bondage. That is why we need God's spirit to set us free and to direct us on the path to God. The Spirit reminds us of our commitment to God and helps us constantly to be faithful to God by making us experience His presence in our lives. We need the Spirit to remind us of the way to the Father; to refresh us when we are weary and faltering due to our weaknesses; to encourage us so that we do not give up our fight against sin in us and around us. Left to ourselves we cannot manage, but with his Spirit

The 'rest' numbering 21 are those who have SOME scores greater than 5 or even in double digits but didnt make it to the top 10. But whichever way you slice and dice the salami the result is still depressing. The numbers are badly skewed towards the bottom of the heap. [Goanet] 'Elected Unopposed' - GOMANTAK TIMES (Goa) May 21, 2007
--- CONVENTION OF THE GOAN DIASPORA FROM GOA INTO THE WORLD Lisbon, Portugal June 15-17, 2007 Details at: http://www.goacom.org/casa-de-goa/noticias.html --- ‘ELECTED UNOPPOSED’ By Valmiki Faleiro Elections are expensive. That home truth hit Luizinho Faleiro after his first two elections. Navelim was, no doubt, a former UGP (turned Congress) bastion. Election expenses were a song as compared to other fiercely fought constituencies like nearby Margao. The problem was Luizinho, a former Zuari Agro Chemicals employee, was perennially broke. He didn’t have money even to replace a broken stand of his ramshackle ‘Crusader’ motorcycle. As his third election approached – eventually held November 22, 1989 – a small circle of friends, Luizinho’s think tank, wondered how to mobilize funds for the campaign. I happened to be part of that group. The prospects were truly formidable. In the new delimitation, Navelim constituency had been reorganized. Though it appeared a contiguous unit on paper, the ground reality was that extensive new areas, being the four villages of Varca, Orlim, Carmona and Cavelossim, which since 1963 were part of Benaulim, had been added to Navelim. And all these areas, where Luizinho would have to work from scratch, were situated on the other side of River Sal! “Why undergo the torment of an election campaign?” Radharao Gracias, I think, suggested, rather preposterously, “let’s try and get him elected unopposed!” Only at Panchayat ward level, where the electorate seldom crossed the 1,000-voter mark those days, a stray candidate got elected unopposed. But, at the State Assembly level? Even if fantastic, one wished, in the circumstances of Luizinho’s financial status (he was not yet a minister then), it could somehow come through. The going had been smooth for Luizinho in the previous two elections. In the maiden, of January 3, 1980, Babu Naik, then South Goa’s undisputed Congress leader, paid for Luizinho’s election deposit. The party provided bulk of the campaign materials and funds, which were minimal, considering the huge Congress wave all over Goa following the April 23, 1979 disgrace in the Assembly by the then ruling MGP. In a practically straight fight, Luizinho easily defeated MGP’s Benedito (“Bishut”) Temudo by a margin of some 5,400 votes. His December 27, 1984 election was, however, a different ball game. Having walked out of the Congress, Luizinho was a ‘Goa Congress’ candidate. He was pitted against the same Bishut, this time the Congress candidate. To his credit, Luizinho did admirably, defeated Bishut by about 5,600 votes, and was the only successful man of the Goa Congress throughout Goa. As nominations for the Nov-89 polls opened, we kept our closely guarded secret – and a hawk’s eye on those filing their papers from Navelim. Even if farfetched, the possibility of an unopposed election was not discarded. At close of nominations, we set to work in all earnest. There was this boy from Carmona. He worked at Fabril Gasosa. His boss, Erasmo Sequeira, had fielded him as the Janata candidate. We easily won him over. The poor chap lost his job. There was Vasquito Martins from Varca. We spent several nights over him. It was then Margao Dy SP, Alex Rasquinha, who finally won Vasquito over. Later, when Luizinho was a powerful minister in the Rane cabinet, he had Rasquinha shunted to a limbo post at Police HQ! The toughest to crack was Luizinho’s own brother-in-law, “Babush” Xavier. He was the only man left … a paper-thin difference between a historic, first-in-Goa’s-history triumph and the mortification of launching an election campaign. Personal animosities were at play. Babush was surprisingly stubborn. Our man Friday, Churchill Alemao, also Luizinho’s “kumpar,” was friends with Babush. We put him on the job. It was, thanks to Churchill’s days-long resolute convincing, that earned Luizinho that place in history. And, perhaps, the cheapest Goa Assembly election victory, ever! Like Rasquinha, we also know how Luizinho repaid Churchill… = The above article appeared in the May 21, 2007 edition of the Gomantak Times, Goa --- Goanet recommends, and is proud to be associated with, 'Domnic's Goa' - A nostalgic romp through a bygone era. --- CONVENTION OF THE GOAN DIASPORA FROM GOA INTO THE WORLD Lisbon, Portugal June 15-17, 2007 Details at: http://www.goacom.org/casa-de-goa/noticias.html --- I am not surprised at Aires Rodrigues changing his stances. And I am surprised why others are suprised at his support of BJP. In his interview to Goa Today, he has said that the his Goa Bachao Andolyan (GBA) cannot remain "political". Lot of secular-minded Goans would not want BJP back in power, however good it claims to be and however good is may have been during its short reign. The saffron colour and "ardi charddi" do not fit into the Goan secular environment. In Aries's about turn, the GBA should learn a lesson, though I am surprised why they encouraged such a person in the first place. [Goanet] 'India has made software mobile' — Mr Francisco D'Souza, COO, Cognizant
--- CONVENTION OF THE GOAN DIASPORA FROM GOA INTO THE WORLD Lisbon, Portugal June 15-17, 2007 Details at: http://www.goacom.org/casa-de-goa/noticias.html --- Dating back to 2004... but interesting. --FN http://www.blonnet.com/iw/2004/11/21/stories/2004112100861300.htm 'India has made software mobile' — Mr Francisco D'Souza, COO, Cognizant Krishnan Thiagarajan Bharat Kumar At 36, Mr Francisco D'Souza is among the youngest Chief Operating Officers in the software services sector. Elevated to COO last year, this MBA from Carnegie Mellon was part of the team that founded, in 1994, the Nasdaq-listed Cognizant Technology Solutions (in its earlier avatar as a division of Dun & Bradstreet). Since then, he has been one of the key members of the management team steering the company's growth over the past decade. In a freewheeling interview with Business Line, Mr D'Souza spoke of the key trends shaping the global software services sector. Excerpts from the interview: Is the picture too perfect for the IT services companies? Where does the confidence stem from? Is emulating the onsite-offshore model that difficult for the Accentures and IBMs of the world? The fundamental confidence comes from the fact that offshore has become mainstream. When we talk to a customer now, compared to five-ten years ago, the focus is different. Earlier, our sales and business development activity was more of evangelising or educating the customer about offshore, proving the efficacy of the onsite-offshore model and proving our capabilities. Those days are over. When we walk into a client situation now, our conversation starts from a very different point. Today, clients are willing to consider a bouquet of services around the core competence. Ten years ago, it would have been impossible to sell infrastructure services in the onsite-offshore model. It is not to say that clients are any less discerning but getting the audience and a buy-in is easier now as offshore is an accepted mainstream concept. That has made the process of articulating and describing the value proposition to a client easier. One should not simplify the fact that we have a strong and compelling value proposition. The reality is that relative to the global system integrators, Indian players have a much deeper understanding of doing work in an onsite-offshore model. In India we tend to underestimate and oversimplify it. It is very difficult to build what we have built as an industry. It took the industry over 10 years of learning to build, mature and continue to improve upon the model. If you look at what we execute using the onsite-offshore model today, it is far more mature than 10 years ago, and it has taken us 10 years of collective wisdom to get to the point we are today. So, we sometimes trivialise the model and it is not easy for anyone to quickly replicate or emulate it. There are companies all over the globe in low cost locations but are far away from the capabilities we have. In many client situations, we have been on par with the global system integrators delivering solutions to clients using the onsite-offshore model. It is because our model is so finely tuned. This is not to say that our global competitors will not get there. But it is not as simple as hiring 40 people to gain the credentials of having the capability to deliver from offshore. Some studies indicate that Indian companies are not up in terms of domain expertise or relationships at the CXO level. As Indian companies move up the value chain and the multinationals move down the value chain, are the ground rules changing dramatically in the industry? It is difficult to quantify in absolute terms who has made more progress — moving up the value chain or coming down the value chain. What I can say is that whichever direction one is moving, there are inhibitors that prevent or make it difficult to move in that direction. In the case of Indian companies it is learning about being global, it is about the "cultural journey" up the value chain as much as it's about the capability of moving up the value chain. As you move up, the degree of sophistication and relationship management needs to migrate as well. When you are lower on the value chain, the work you tend to do is transactional in nature. And so the nature of the relationship with the client is also transactional. One can report against metrics and show the client that value is being delivered in an objective way. As one moves up the value chain, the objective or criteria of success becomes less quantitative and more qualitative. One delivers "value" to clients, reflected in more intense and strategic personal relationships. Indian companies are getting to build that capability. The system integrators moving down the value chain have their own set of inhibitors when they enter offshore locations and low cost centres. Thei

--- CONVENTION OF THE GOAN DIASPORA FROM GOA INTO THE WORLD Lisbon, Portugal June 15-17, 2007 Details at: http://www.goacom.org/casa-de-goa/noticias.html --- Raza tops Christies' Indian art auction with $1.4 mn Indo-Asian News Service London, May 22 (IANS) Famed artist Syed Haider Raza's 1985 work "La Terre" trumped the Christie's Modern and Contemporary Indian Art Auction here, fetching 720,000 pounds ($1.4 million). This work of art at Lot 7 was estimated at 400,000-600,000 pounds. Out of the 105 lots offered, 85 sold at the auction Monday evening. In terms of value, the sale mopped up 4.47 million pounds ($8.8 million). The catalogue cover Lot 21, Vasudev Gaitonde's untitled work of 1968, a sage green composition in the abstracted idiom saw a realisation of 490,400 pounds from an estimate of 450,000-550,000 pounds. Gaitonde's second highest place was followed by Francis Newton Souza whose Lot 9, "Landscape with Planet" went for 311,200 pounds with its estimate at 200,000-300,000 pounds. In a rare twin combine, Lot 29 and Lot 33 achieved the same price - 156,000 pounds. Lot 29 was Jagdish Swaminathan's "Untitled (from the Bird, Tree and Mountain Series)", created in 1985. It had an estimate of 130,000-180,000 pounds. Lot 33 was Tyeb Mehta's 1961 untitled nude that got 156,000 pounds, much higher than its estimate of 40,000-60,000 pounds. Tyeb's early works are not as powerful as his later "Kali" or "Mahishasura" series. M.F. Husain, 92, flew from Dubai to London to watch the sale. Somewhat satisfied to get a lower place on auction sales, his 1960 work untitled circa at Lot 25 went for 132,000 pounds from an estimate of 100,000-150,000 pounds. The first world record at an auction was set for India's Duchamp Subodh Gupta whose Lot 106, an untitled 2005 work, went for 108,000 pounds from an estimated 40,000-50,000 pounds. Young contemporary artists Subodh Gupta, Justin Ponmany and Talha Rathore also achieved record prices in the sale. Christie's now looks forward to its Asian Contemporary Art sale in Hong Kong May 27 and the Modern and Contemporary Indian Art sale in September in New York. "The Indian market is correcting and consolidating itself," said a collector and trader in the auction room who felt the auction didn't have too much to boast about. --- Goanet recommends, and is proud to be associated with, 'Domnic's Goa' - A nostalgic romp through a bygone era. Re: it is not the first time on G'net that this has happened. Someone else thought that Charudatta was a woman (despite the indication of the masculine gender in the second part of my signature "Khoro goenkar". Had I been a woman, it should have been "Khori Goikann" ? Perhaps it is because of the close half-rhyme between the more famous Charulata and Charudatta. (although in original Sanskrit this half rhyme effect is impossible, because the feminine words, as a rule, end with an "aa... or an " i "or "e..", whereas the masculine usually end with a visargah ":" and it is pronounced more or less like "aha". Here I shall have to share with the G'netters the meanings of the two:- Charulata: Charu = Beauty Lata = creeper Charulata = beautiful creeper And Charudatta: Charu = do Dutta = adopted/given in adoption etc. Charudatta = the one who is given in adoption (to the world) by beauty. So dear G'netters, beware! Don't mess with me too much, for I am not yours to be messed with. If you do that, you may incur the wrath of mama Beauty and she may never come visiting your consciousness. By the way, is not my name beautiful? __ TO SANTOSH - "No babes ever frequented the Chachacha bar"... Cheers, Santosh Re: Dear Bab Santosh, I wonder how someone like you would know that? Given that before you became "Chimbelcho", your home used to be in Gurunath building where the Cha cha cha tavern was housed, it is possible to assume the above. But it is unlikely that You, You Santosh, were so keenly vigilant in matters related to thoroughfares of babes in Cha cha cha! I remember you as a brilliant young student who was diligent in his studies and not study of babe - traffic !!?! Unless of course, you had a balcony view of everything that went on in there in chachacha... I know that if not babes, at least one babe has gone in chachacha to drink gin!!! She was from 'Damao' - Daman. This is un-challengeable information, nor can it be proven, (like the creator!) therefore it is NOT A SCIENTIFIC FACT!!! But it is true. And so we can say, (hello Orlando and the other pro science bores) that facts and truth exists independent of its not being available for tests and tubes (of linear, illustrative inquiery)... which means that creator can or may exist without lending himself to inquiery by scientific methods! __ TO G'NET EDITORS: How's that both, the Monday post and Today's post carry the same issue number? [Goanet] BJP looks to Goa to revive sagging fortunes
--- CONVENTION OF THE GOAN DIASPORA FROM GOA INTO THE WORLD Lisbon, Portugal June 15-17, 2007 Details at: http://www.goacom.org/casa-de-goa/noticias.html --- BJP looks to Goa to revive sagging fortunes By Faraz Ahmad, Indo-Asian News Service New Delhi, May 22 (IANS) Demoralised after the dismal showing in Uttar Pradesh, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is hoping to reverse its fortunes with the Goa elections next month. The mood should be quite upbeat by the time the party's national executive meets in Jaipur June 15-17, say BJP leaders optimistically. Party vice president Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi admitted that the defeat in Uttar Pradesh was "a subject of major concern" and would come up for discussion at the meeting of the party's highest decision-making body. If the party does badly in Goa too in the June 2 elections, the leadership may have to do a lot of explaining in the national executive. Party president Rajnath Singh led a meeting of office bearers Monday to discuss the future prospects, with elections also due in Gujarat, Meghalaya and Himachal Pradesh this year. The BJP feels it should do reasonably well by striking a deal with the Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party, thereby saving it a great deal of embarrassment, conceded a senior party leader. And to make sure it does well, general secretary Arun Jaitley, who brought good luck to the party in the Punjab elections, has been entrusted with organising the strategy. Campaigning got off to a high start with opposition leader L.K. Advani addressing the first public meeting at Azad Maidan in Panjim Monday. Campaign in-charge Rajiv Pratap Rudy has also lined up leaders like M. Venkaiah Naidu, Sushma Swaraj, Naqvi, Gopinath Munde and Prakash Javadekar. Besides, television star Smriti Irani and former cricketer Navjot Singh Sidhu would join the Goa campaign soon. If all goes well, the party would be in a buoyant mood and face the other elections - particularly in Gujarat where it hopes to come back for another five years. The BJP has reason to despair after the Uttar Pradesh elections, said a political analyst. The Samajwadi Party lost 100 seats narrowly and there were also 175 seats where it came second. This means that of the 402 seats that went to the polls, BJP was not a runner up in some 300 seats. --- Goanet recommends, and is proud to be associated with, 'Domnic's Goa' - A nostalgic romp through a bygone era. To cite my favourite, the Wikipedia; Anandamath (The mission house of Felicity, 1882) is a political novel which depicts a Sannyasi (Brahmin ascetic) army fighting Indian muslims who are in the employ of the East India Company. The book calls for the rise of Brahmin/Hindu nationalism but, ironically, concludes with a character accepting British Empire as a necessity. The novel was also the source of the song "Vande Mataram" (I worship the Mother) which, set to music by Rabindranath Tagore, was taken up by many secular nationalists. The novel is loosely based on the time of the Sannyasi Rebellion, however in the actual rebellion, Hindus sannyasis and Muslim fakirs both rebelled against the British East India Company. The novel first appeared in serial form in Bangadarshan. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bankim_Chandra_Chattopadhyay FN -- FN M: 0091 9822122436 P: +91-832-240-9490 (after 1300IST) Skype: fredericknoronha Yahoochat: fredericknoronha http://fn.goa-india.org http://fredericknoronha.wordpress.com Email fred at bytesforall.org Res: 784 Saligao 403511 Goa India --- Goanet recommends, and is proud to be associated with, 'Domnic's Goa' - A nostalgic romp through a bygone era. In short, it is the "Salcete Taluka", that is responsible for the "development" or "degeneration" of Goa. Bearing such a big responsibility on its shoulders, one wonders, if the people of Salcete, sincerely, do justice to the Goan people. Do they really understand the seriousness of the situation ? Do they really search their hearts and minds, before they cast their 'vote" in favour, of one or the other candidate ? On the face of it, it does not look so. Or else, how is it, then possible, that in so many constituencies of Salcete, the same candidates get elected, continuosly, again and again, for the last 20 years? And some, for even 25 years ? Even the people of the under-developed countries of Africa, will not believe, that such a thing happens in India, even today. That, in a "State" like Goa, where literacy of the people is claimed to be so very high, people elect the same M.L.A for as long as 25years. Believe it or not, it happens in Goa. And the 'Salcete Taluka", is mainly responsible for this "happening". What does this all mean ? To me, this could all mean just one possibility or a combination of two or more of the following :- 1. That the people of 'Salcete Taluka" are illiterate and do not know what is politically good for them. 2. That the people of the "Salcete Taluka" are not bothered as to who, runs their Government. Any one is ok for them. 3. That the people of 'Salcete Taluka' are too materialistic and can be purchased for a "price". 4. That "self-respect" means nothing to the people of the "Salcete Taluka". They are ready to trade their "self-respect" for money, at any given time. 5. That the people of "Salcete Taluka' are too "timid" and afraid of the " Mafia-Type" politicians of Salcete. I myself am, from the "Salcete Taluka" and I know the people of Salcete, too well. None of the five possibilities, enumerated above, are true. The people of Salcete are highly literate and are fully aware, of what's good for them. They are very much bothered about who's running their Government and definitely, want to have a "say" in choosing their representatives. They are definitely not materialistic and cannot be purchased for selfish, material-benefits. "Self-respect" means a lot to the people of Salcete. They will not compromise their "self-respect" for 'anything". If this, is the ground-level situation in the "Salcete Taluka", then what else could be the reason, for the people of Salcete to vote for the same politicians over and over again for the last 25 "long" years. Yes, it is probably, possibility number "Five" ie. that the people of Salcete are too timid and afraid of the "Mafia-Type" politicians of Salcete. It is true that the politicians of Salcete are operating on the same lines as the "Mafia" does, in other parts of the world. If one does not vote for the "Dada" of their constituency, and if the "Dada" comes to know about it, then, "may-heaven-help-you ". Your life, will be "one-big-misery". The "Dada"s henchmen will be following you where ever you go. You could be beaten -up, beyond recognition, or even, handicapped for life. You will never get a "Municipal-License" to build, or renovate your house. Your kith and kin, will never be able to get a Govt. job. If you go, to the Government/ Municipality/Panchayat for any license, rest assured, you will never get it. With such a "fright" being sent down to the "electorate" by these 'Dadas of Salcete", who would dare go against them ? Who would dare to "not vote" for them and invite their wrath ? If this is the state of affairs in the "Salcete Taluka", then how can one, ever expect any change in the politics of Goa? I wonder, for how long, will my brothers and sisters of the"Salcete Taluka" let these, "sorry state of affairs" go on ? For how long, will we remain a "timid" lot ? For how long will we continue to surrender, to these "Mafia" politicians ? The people of Goa, outside Salcete, continue to laugh at us. They ask, Is there no one else, in Salcete, to govern their affairs? Where is the "Youth" of Salcete ? Will the Youth of Salcete never be allowed, to grow in politics ? Will Salcete always continue to be a monopoly of these, self-appointed "Dadas" ? Another election, for the new "Goa-State-Legislative-Assembly" is due very soon. Will the people of "Salcete Taluka" let down, Goa and Goans once again? Will they continue to be "timid" and surrender to the same "Dadas"

You're losing your shine already. Here I was On Goanet, we get very angry if our grey cells are not galvanized into action at least once every 24 hours." Selma RE:Yes, Charu is fine! That's what everybody calls me - both, friends and foes. No posts about centrifugal movements from now on. Goanetters don't seem ready for "l'avenir"... Lose my shine? You must be joking Selma! Just wanted to sit and watch for a while. It's Good to check the impulse to be drawn into commenting on everything. Sometimes Goanet looks fantastic when I sit just looking. Besides, I'd like to connect on a wavelength peculiar to Goans and Goa. Something uniquely Goan. Goanet is a good luck find! I was not sure initially if it would get me by the b word, but believe me, I actually look forward to the posts from Goanet. I am very new on't, not only Goanet, but this whole internet thing. Obviously you are a veteran on the net. Seem so familiar with things like "FN/'s habit of ban'kok oil, etc? He's an oldie, too, isn't he? He seems to be... How's that only a certain few take the bait on the Goanet? FN does not seem interested in anything b'low his ,I imagine, intellectual standards!? A "trout" eh? Whereas I am like a "buranto". You can fish me with nothing more than a length of ordinary thread. I have myself done that near the old ferry warf in Panjim, way back in the early 80's or late 70's (Opposite Olympic bar!!!):- Around a certain hour of the day, fish - 'Sangtam', 'Shevtallyos' and 'burrantes' usually - gather in their agitated shoals, very close to the tide in the shallows, to eat all kinds of things which float about. And people come (used to go) fishing there. One day I found a piece of ordinary thread from a 'pudo' someone had chucked by the roadside. I had no bait, too. But I cast that bit of thread in the waters and lo! A burranto caught the end in his mouth. I jerked the fellow right up, did it again and again and again and yet again, almost every time getting a fish by the thread-end. Within half an hour I had many, many 'burrantes' to carry home. Unfortunately, it was a Monday or a Thursday and we did not cook fish on those days, so my mother yelled at me for 'touching' fish on a 'Somar' or 'birestar'... Not surprising that expressions 'small fish'/ small fry/Shark are associated with egos and personas of people. 'He's a shark', they might say, or 'Oh! he's a small fry' and stuff like that. So a 'burranto' is what I thought I took up every thread (pun intended) like and commented on it on the Goanet. And the Selmas hooked me off even without a hook!! But then I realised that I did not want to be a burranto. Also my intention is to make this Goanet experience a bit more 'amchem' type, you know, because of late I miss Goa. So none of that highbrow intellectual bullshit! I will tell stories from the past, hoping that more and more "get to like the new penny" to give your expression a quote (coat !) of prevalent usage. Now The grey cell part: have you heard of a term passhyanti - vaak? Passyanti - vaak is an old Vedic term for the 'seeing intellect' or, to be precise, 'speech that sees' or 'seen thought'. The word kavi meaning poet is Sanskrit for a seer. It is the poet who wrote our Itihaas or history. Mahabharata and Ramayana are considered our History, although to a mind steeped in the linear method of deduction and inference it may sound most bizarre. The name Rama, several centuries after it is 'dead and gone' is alive enough to motivate a whole nation into the Babri masjid fiasco. Same is the case with the great Indian freedom struggle. What really ignited the fire of Nationalism? Gandhi? Gapal Krishna Gokhale, Surendranath Bannergy? Hell no!!! It was actually a novel called Ananda-Math by rishi Bonkim Chandra Chattopaddhyay. That is the book from where the poem Vande Mataram comes, which became the inspirational mantra of the struggle. ( you see the whole Sanskrit approach to language as everything else is not acute and utilitarian like the western approach to things. There are "vadas" or "ism" in, for instance, the Jain inquiry into the nature of thought. There are things like 'asti asti vada (yes + yes ism), nasti nasti vada( no + no ism), asti nasti vada (yes + no ism) and the like. These are hair slitting arguments about the many ways in which 'tarka' or logic can be applied. And so broadly speaking, there is nothing that is wrong in the Indian thought. Even what is called "wrong" in the normal modern sense is there because it has a valid, god ordained place to exist on its own. Wrong and right was determined by canonized tenets of moral law , but t

--- CONVENTION OF THE GOAN DIASPORA FROM GOA INTO THE WORLD Lisbon, Portugal June 15-17, 2007 Details at: http://www.goacom.org/casa-de-goa/noticias.html --- Hi Cornel, I perfectly echo your sentiments, as I experienced the same early this month in Goa. I visited the 'The Corporation of the City of Panaji". and personally delivered a letter to consider the charges levied on the Apartment we bought in Caranzalem, being a Non Resident. Everytime I telephoned the Officer in charge, he happily requested me to come (I was residing in Margao) and meet him in his Office in the Evening. This went on till the day of my departure (3 May) from Goa. I had to make around three futile trips to Panjim from Margao. This went on till the day of my departure, which was then brought to my attention that I had to grease his palms to get it done. Every subsequent visit I make to Goa, I have observed that the Corruption level is on the rise. Its one of the deadly social diseases which prevents growth of a Society. (local inhabitants). Progressive leaders bring progress. Its testing time now, as whom we should vote for? However if the voters can be bought for a few rupees, then corruption starts from there and what goes around comes around. Food for thought! Leo Conrad D'Souza. Goan - Now in Dubai. --- CONVENTION OF THE GOAN DIASPORA FROM GOA INTO THE WORLD Lisbon, Portugal June 15-17, 2007 Details at: http://www.goacom.org/casa-de-goa/noticias.html --- [Self] I have since converted the raw scores (parametric percentiles) into weighted average scores (by applying equal 0.2 weights to each of the parameters) to arrive at rank orders for the top 5 MLAs in the HERALD story (viz the ones with at least three parametric percentiles in double digits). This is as follows: 1.Jeetendra Deshprabhu (34.0) 2. Wilfred D'Souza (27.8) 3. Luizinho Faleiro (26.2) 4. Pratapsingh Rane (16.2) 5. Victoria Fernandes (13.0). The next lot (the so-called 'bad' in my categorisation) consists of 6. Manohar Parrikar (24.0) 7.Laxmikant Parsekar (15.6) 8. Atanasio Monserrate (15.4) 9. Matanhy Saldanha (12.2) and 10. Ravi Naik (9.6) The rest are the 'ugly'. These are folks whose parametric percentiles were all under 5. Note that some in the lower end of the 'good' had weighted average scores below those on the top of the 'bad'. We consider that a broad gauged score profile was to be preferred to a spiky one. This also highlights the effect of weights chosen for the parameters. Should they be equal? Or should some be 'heavier' than others? This change will make a difference. In any case our purpose is merely to demonstrate, not to issue a full and final 'certificate'. The numbers given above are subject to verification and validation by others. --- Goanet recommends, and is proud to be associated with, 'Domnic's Goa' - A nostalgic romp through a bygone era. Here in Canada there are people who refuse to accept blood transfusions because of their religious beliefs. I have no problems with such people who, essentially, remove themselves from the gene pool because of their beliefs. However, the same person becomes a problem to society when he also insists that his infant child should not receive a blood transfusion, one that would save the infants life. I think you will agree with me that this is an example of when knowledge has to trump beliefs. Mervyn3.0 "All truth passes through three stages. First it is ridiculed. [Goanet] The expat position
--- CONVENTION OF THE GOAN DIASPORA FROM GOA INTO THE WORLD Lisbon, Portugal June 15-17, 2007 Details at: http://www.goacom.org/casa-de-goa/noticias.html --- Forgive the cross posting but this exchange from Goan Heritage discussion group ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) is very relevant here too. I think Jason has very eloquently and intelligently said to Rajan what 'locals' on this forum too have been saying to the expats. Your inputs are welcome, but your perspective needs fine tuning. Cheers! Cecil === Rajan, > Pardon me, but I am a "local" (or does living abroad > for a number of years render me "non- > local" and divest me of the abstruse insights > vouchsafed only to the genuine local in Frog-in- > the-wellsville?) and I allow myself the privilege of > laughing at myself, and at the stupidities, > aburdities and frailties of my people. I am sorry > that you have a problem with that. I am not for a moment suggesting that we privilege the perspective of some fictional authentic local. Not for a moment. However, I am suggesting that there is a problem with the perspective of those who expats who go abroad, see a different world and then unthinkingly expect to see it replicated in Goa regardless of the local circumstances or cultural requirements. There is also a certain- I have been out, i know better attitude, that is frankly disrespectful. A second problem with the unreflexive expat position also is that it is buoyed by their location in an entirely different economy. The priorities therefore do change. To be very crude - and not referring to you- if i were to make my money at the Microsoft Office in Seattle, buckets and buckets of it, I would perhaps, also be inclined to argue for the setting up of a Goa that corresponds to myth, and is set aside as a place for vacation and my spiritual communing with my past. For the Goan in Goa though, Goa is the only space s/he has to exploit. She does not have the luxury of seeing Goa solely as this pleasure-paradise space, no matter how much she would like to. as you can see therefore, it is not about some authentic local position, but about the manner in which the demands are made and priorities set that I am urging us to think about. > Goans are not sushegad? Gee, which alternative > universe are you living in? Goans are known to be sushegad. Are they in fact? I have seen Goans slog their ass off, not in the far Gulf or Paris, but in Goa. I have seen Goans fight for thier environment, for their lifestyles, for thier language and other things they hold dear. Under these circumstances, how can i call them sushegad? I understand sushegad as being a way of life that we offer in contrast to the violences and demhumanising values of capitalist-industrial life. It is a positive value, for which Goans have fought. It is not some negative attitude. Moreover, the Goan is always prevented from being cast as a hero, or as achieving something noteworthy, becasue she is Sushegad. She is typecast into a role out of which there is no escape. This role I would argue stems more from the colonial politics of representation than any inherent Goan trait. When we call Goans sushegad therefore, and use it to deride them, what we do is to only perpetuate the disempowerment of the Goan. Salut. This argument generally finds favour with those who do not understand natural selection or who think evolution is pure 'chance'. It is further boosted because it is a pefect fit with what most people are brainwashed with as children i.e. if you can't explain something, it must be God's work. If there truly exists anything irreducibly complex in nature, then what about the entity that designed it. Wouldn't the same 'logic' apply to that entity?
