Interview in Deccan Herald Sept 4, 2007

Arabian Sea could turn into chimney for nitrous oxide

If the present warming trend continues, it would have
far-reaching consequences on the ecosystem of the Arabian
Sea, says biological oceanographer Joaquim Goes.

The increasing meltdown of snow cover over the Himalayas and
the warming of the Eurasian landmass have triggered rapid and
profound changes in the Arabian Sea. Over the past seven
years, the western half of the Arabian Sea has witnessed
record increases in phytoplankton, which can cause oxygen
depletion below the surface waters. If the present warming
trend continues, it would have far-reaching consequences on
the ecosystem of the Arabian Sea, says biological
oceanographer Joaquim Goes.

A senior researcher at the Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean
Sciences, Maine, USA, Goa-born Goes is part of an
eight-member research team from the US, India and Oman on the
NASA-funded project Climate Change and its impact on the
ecosystem of the Arabian Sea. On a cruise off the coast of
Goa, Goes spoke to Devika Sequeira of Deccan Herald about the
findings of the study so far. Excerpts:

Melting snow cover in the Himalayas is altering the ocean
food chain in the Arabian Sea. Can you explain the
correlation?

The Arabian Sea is a tropical ocean ecosystem, where
phytoplankton photosynthesis and growth is largely dependent
on the availability of adequate amount of nutrients. The
nutrients are made available by oceanographic processes,
which help churn the water column and transport nutrient rich
water from the deep ocean to the upper sunlight layers where
phytoplankton are usually found. In the Arabian Sea, this
mixing of nutrient-rich waters is driven primarily by the
monsoon winds, whose intensity is dependent on the pressure
gradient that develops between the Arabian Sea and the Indian
sub-continent.

The development of this pressure gradient is largely
regulated by the size of the snow caps over the
Himalayan-Tibetan Plateau. Over the past few years the snow
caps have been shrinking at a very alarming rate. There are
now clear indications that the glaciers on the
Himalayan-Tibetan mountain range are retreating at a very
rapid rate, as a result of global warming, which is altering
the pressure gradient between the sea and the land causing
the monsoon winds to intensify.

Your study shows that phytoplankton concentrations in the
western Arabian Sea have increased by over 350 per cent over
the past 7 years. Is there enough evidence to link this to
large fish kills off the coast of Oman?

Pollution, toxic algae or fish diseases are the common means
that can cause massive fish die-offs in coastal ecosystems.
At present we have no evidence to support the notion that any
of these factors are responsible for fish mortality off Oman.
On the other hand, the die-offs have consistently been
observed in conjunction with the appearance of oxygen-poor
seawater at the surface. Our hypothesis is that the dramatic
increase in phytoplankton biomass in the Arabian Sea,
witnessed over the past few years, is in excess of the amount
that can be eaten by higher organisms in the food chain.
Consequently, a large amount of organic matter, being
produced by phytoplankton in the sunlit layers, sinks out of
the water column into the deep unconsumed. Here bacterial
breakdown of these sinking material results in a rapid
reduction in oxygen to concentrations that will not allow
fish to survive.

The creation of nitrous oxide in the Arabian Sea could
exacerbate climate change, your study says. What would be its
effects on India?

Nitrous oxide is a green house gas that is over 400 times
more potent than carbon dioxide. If the biological
productivity in the Arabian Sea continues to increase, the
sea would start losing even more oxygen and its permanent
oxygen minimum zone could start to spread. The Arabian Sea is
one of the few oceans that have a permanent oxygen minimum
zone. This zone is favourable to the formation of nitrous
oxide (laughing gas). There is a possibility that the Arabian
Sea could become a sort of a chimney for this gas that could
exacerbate the warming trend and the melting of the Himalayan
snow caps.

Can you spell out the possible consequences of this?
Since the Himalayan snow caps are integral to the Indian
monsoon system, any further reduction in winter-time and
increase in ambient temperatures would make our monsoons even
more erratic. Each year floods and droughts will become more
commonplace. Without doubt, cyclone

Dear Friends and Well Wishers,

I am writing to solicit your support for my race at the upcoming Rock Roll ½
marathon on October
14th, 2007 in San Jose, California. I have committed to run this event for
worthy causes under the
auspices of Goa Sudharop - a tax exempt charitable organization with 501c3
status, focused and
dedicated towards the preservation of the environment and Goa's natural beauty,
and the betterment
of the unfortunate and underprivileged in the rural and village communities of
Goa. Please visit

My personal goal at the time of registration was 120 minutes. But as Murphy
would have it I find
myself dogged by knee pains with just as many diagnosis - chondro-malacia,
bursites, torn meniscus
etc, as the physicians and therapist consulted. However the cause is too
compelling and the need
too dire and my challenge, as with everything else in life, is to find the
right balance as I
train to the finish line.

Goa Sudharop has dedicated this year for the Environment. Many of us are
painfully aware of the
pillaging of land by corporations and corrupt politicians that threatens to
forever tarnish this
natural beauty and the myriad challenges faced on the environmental front. It
cries out for grass
roots level mobilization to thwart such gross violations of the law and the
mindless greed of
trusted custodians and the reckless and utter disregard to preservation of our
environment. I am
dedicating my run to Goa Sudharop's mission in general and also to Helping
Hands a shelter in a
remote village for the homeless, the destitute and impoverished fellow
citizens. I was painfully
aware of and had felt first hand the need to pursue this for quite sometime.
But I found myself
taking cover under good excuses of lack of time or the personal resolve to get
it underway, until
my visit to Goa this summer. I am greatly inspired and humbled by the selfless
and admirable work
of the members of Goa Sudharop as well as the pioneers of Helping Hands. I
have firm conviction
that with your support I will be able to surmount the obstacles and do the best
I can towards
these goals. I appreciate your help in any or all shape or form:

- A tax deductible donation made out to Goa Sudharop for my run
- Tips on training
- Injury prevention / recovery.
- Running strategy etc.

I greatly appreciate your support and sincerely thank you all in advance.
Please feel free to
forward this on as you deem fit to anyone passionate about supporting the
cause. I pledge to
personally match every dollar upto $1000 that you pledge in support of my race.
I will keep you
posted on the outcome after the race on October 14th.

Sincerely,

Hello All,

Cousins Anton and Pedro get answers at IGO meeting

Just under 100 people with a host of real estate, property management, and
investment issues on their mind attended the International Goan Organization
(IGO) of Ontario meeting on August 26, 2007.

Cellie Gonsalves, Director of the IGO reviewed the Best of Both Worlds
project which dealt with seven major issues facing Goans living in Canada,
namely Land Property Disputes; Property Management; Buying, Selling
Leasing Real Estate; Estate Taxation; Investing in India; Discrimination
against Goans born in Pakistan and Grievances of NRGs and Information
Center. Action taken in dealing with all these issues by the IGO and the
Commissioner for NRI Affairs, Hon Minister Eduardo Faleiro in Goa was
reviewed.

Officials from the State Bank of India, Dr. Ajay Tandon Sr. Vice President
Branch Head, State Bank of India (Canada), and Mr. Trevor Fernandes Chief
Manager, State Bank of India, Goa shared their knowledge and expertise
relating to banking, investing and taxation of capital gains in India.

Cellie stated that there is commonality between concerns of Goans in Canada
and those residing elsewhere in the world. She said that the IGO therefore
believes that spearheading solutions to these concerns will ultimately serve
all Goans, and in this way spark a heightened sense of solidarity and
connectivity between Goans the world over...and our motherland.

Can soft-target terrorism be prevented?
5 Sep, 2007, 0128 hrs IST, Terrorist-aiding attitude makes us vulnerable The
tendency to blame the police and intelligence agencies alone for the terror
strike at Hyderabad is another indication of just how unwilling we are to
develop a comprehensive, meaningful analysis of our problems. **We find it
convenient to heap the blame on the failure at the last stage of the process
rather than face the inconvenient truths that make that failure almost
inevitable.** Social problems are blamed on the media that reveals them and
terrorist incidents on the police that failed to anticipate them. What we
refuse to acknowledge is the role that our attitudes play in making us
particularly vulnerable, soft targets for terrorism. High on the list of our
terrorist-aiding attitudes is our eagerness to link acts of individuals to
larger communities. And this is not done only by those who are targeting a
particular community. Even those who advocate improving conditions for a
community in order to reduce the scope for terrorism are in fact reinforcing
this link. While we must certainly do everything in our means to remove
discrimination, the problem is the view that a feeling of being
discriminated against is justification enough for violence. From larger
national problems of terrorism and the Naxalite threat to local ones like
road rage, Indians seem to believe that as long as each one of us as
individuals feels victimised we are entitled to resort to violence. As each
individual Indian decides, on the basis of convenience, that she is entitled
to her share of violence, social norms tend to be thrown out of the window.
And in an urban jungle where almost anything can provoke violence in anyone,
it is each woman to herself. The last thing we want is to get embroiled in a
problem that does not concern us. And the **best intelligence agencies
cannot succeed in an environment where social threats are not anyone's
problem until they, quite literally, blow up in their face.**
Urban India is today reeling under a disease that has reduced it to a mass
of millions of aggressive, violence-prone individuals whose only concern for
society is the urge to dominate it. This is a sickness that has overpowered
everyone from politicians to those who voted them to power. And the sick are
always the softest targets. ( *National Institute of Advanced Studies )

Although many newly weds nowadays would have landed on the moon and tasted
honey much before marriage, ‘honeymoon’ still remains a ritual to be
performed with as much expense as possible. The word ‘honeymoon’ has become
so popular with newly weds that they will go even to the extent of borrowing
money and celebrating it - we even have 'honeymoon' ice cream! Well-to-do
couples travel outside their states/countries to celebrate honeymoon.

In the past, the first wedding night was spent at home and honeymoon was
celebrated on a “xendri” (mat) in the “osro” (hall), that too in the midst
of other family members – remember people lived in ‘joint families’ then.
Everything on the first wedding night happened naturally and the couple did
not even know they had celebrated honeymoon.

Let us see what comedienne Janet has to say to her husband about honeymoon
in the following joke, which is in Salcete Konkani:

Vokol:	Ar’re muj ghova, tuko ankvar astonnam incharlom mure, honeymoon

Goans debate if more casinos are ok
Rupesh Samant

Panaji, Sept 4 (PTI) Off-shore casinos, a gambling den onboard a ship,
has sparked off a debate in Goa with different opinions being expressed
for and against the new licenses.

Goa, India's only state where off-shore casinos are permitted, already
has a off-shore casino operational on a ship near Panaji city. The
casino run by Advani group of hotels is a crowd puller especially on
weekends and holidays.

While this casino was accepted by the locals, the controversy erupted
when a second such casino, planned by the Leela group, took shape in
south Goa.

The casino, feel the Cavelossim villagers, where it is anchored, is
blocking the movement of fishing trawlers. Besides, the operation to
dredge Sal river is also being objected as it affects the marine life.

The movement which began on a small note has taken a larger proportion
with the local Catholic Church chipping in with its support.

The politicians have kept mum over the topic. Goa Chief Minister
Digamber Kamat and chief secretary J P Singh, who visited the disputed
site, too, have not given their stand on the controversy.

It was the BJP which initially objected to setting up of casinos in the
state last year. Then Chief Minister Pratapsingh Rane had advertised for
six off-shore casinos in the state.

The saffron political party had objected to such huge influx of casinos,
which according to them, would roll out red carpet welcome to gamblers,
money launderers, mafias and prostitution rackets in the peaceful state,
which is frequented by 23 lakh tourists every year. PTI

Teachers
to get interest-free loans for laptops

NT Staff Reporter

Panaji, Sept 4 In
what could be described as the government’s gift to the teachers on the
occasion of Teachers’ Day, the state government accepted their long pending
demands, like interest-free loans for purchase of laptops, grant of senior
scale from the date of their appointment and assured career progression scheme.

Addressing a press conference this evening the Chief Minister, Mr
Digambar Kamat told reporters that the government would give a loan of Rs
40,000 to each of the teachers of secondary and higher secondary schools, as
well as those in colleges, polytechnics and university for purchase of laptops.

Mr Kamat, who also holds the education portfolio, also said that
the loan amount would be recovered in100 monthly instalments from the salaries
of the teachers. He also said that the loan would be disbursed through the Goa
Educational Development Corporation.

The Chief Minister further said that the government by another
decision has approved the demand of the teachers with regards to grant of
senior scale from the date of their initial appointment. Till now the senior
scale was being granted to the teachers only after they acquired training
qualification.

He also said that the government has decided to implement the
assured career progression scheme. This decision would benefit all the
teachers, numbering around 11,500
in the state. Under this scheme all teachers, who have
completed 24 years of service, would be eligible for second upgradation in
their career. Till now 20 per cent of teachers were eligible for selection
grade.

Mr Kamat said that he has written personal letters to all the
teachers in the state hailing their contribution in the progress of the state
as well as urging them that they should deliver better to shape the future of
the state and its people by providing quality education.

Earlier today, the Chief Minister visited the Margao residence of
Mr Damodar Kavlekar (75), his teacher and felicitated him.

Mr Kamat was taught by Mr Kavlekar, while he was studying at Bhatikar Model
English
 High School, Margao.

Informally speaking, the Chief Minister said what he is today is
because of his school teacher who moulded him properly to be a worthy citizen.
This is the only way (felicitation) that he can best offer “gurudakshina” to
his “guru”, the Chief Minister added.

In an interview with Abdul Rauf Beig, senior reporter, she says
Whatever she did, is doing and would do would be for the cause of Goa and
Goans. Here are the excerpts:

What have you to say about your recent political decisions?

In my life whatever steps I took were for Goa
and Goans, dating back to the days of Opinion Poll wherein I left no stone
unturned to see that Goans kept their distinct identity. Whatever I did, am
doing and would be doing would be for the cause of Goa
and Goans, because I love my state and its people who may belong to whatever,
caste creed or religion. I have shown my concern for the state and its people
even at the cost of displeasing my party higher-ups and have suffered for
showing the “courage” to stand against high and mighty, especially during the
agitation for the rights of toddy tapers, ramponkars, ‘jhopadpattiwallas’,
farmers, etc. I go by my conscience and it is god who has been giving me
directions and guiding me, in whatever I do. I would like to say here that
sometimes bad comes before anything good happens. Whatever I did was to satisfy
my people and do well for them. I am not sorry for what I did.

But don’t you think that your decisions were against your own
people?

No, I don’t think so. I have always fought for the cause of common
Goan and was never afraid of taking to the streets for the cause of common man.
I was told that if I decided to oppose now scrapped regional plan I would have
to suffer and I would like to state here that I am still suffering for doing
what I did right for the cause of Goans. But I would like to state here that
all this would not stop me from fighting for my state and its people.

I am 73 years old and don’t have many more years left to live but
I would not permit any one to destroy Goa.
There might be few who may not have liked what I did but there are many who are
still with me and have supported me. Here I would also state that I

I was asked to perform at the show because of the music I have already

[Goanet] Goanet Reader: Arabian Sea could turn into chimney for nitrous oxide (interview by Devika Sequeira, Deccan Herald)

How convincigly an intelligent man speaks out his heart at the no-sense move
made by Indian politicians.

Wipro chairman Mr. Azim Premji's comment on reservation:

I think we should have job reservations in all the fields. I completely support
the PM and all the politicians for promoting this. Let's start the reservation
with our cricket team. We should have 10 percent reservation for Muslims. 30
percent for OBC, SC/ST like that. Cricket rules should be modified accordingly.

The boundary circle should be reduced for an SC/ST player. The four hit by an
OBC player should be considered as a six and a six hit by an OBC player should
be counted as 8 runs. An OBC player scoring 60 runs should be declared as a
century.

We should influence ICC and make rules so that the pace bowlers like Shoaib
Akhtar should not bowl fast balls to our OBC player.

Bowlers should bowl maximum speed of 80 km/ hour to an OBC player.

Any delivery above this speed should be made illegal.

Also we should have reservation in Olympics. In the 100 meters race, an OBC
player should be given a gold medal if he runs 80 meters.

There can be reservation in Government jobs also. Let's recruit SC/ST and OBC
pilots for aircrafts which are carrying the ministers and politicians (that can
really help the country...)

Ensure that only SC/ST and OBC doctors do the operations for the ministers and
other politicians. (Another way of saving the country...)

Let's be creative and think of ways and means to guide INDIA forward...
Let's show the world that INDIA is a GREAT country.
Let's be proud of being an INDIAN...

May the good breed of politicians like ARJUN SINGH long live...This message was

Cong
has promised ticket to my daughter, Churchill tells partymen

NT News Service

Margao, Sept 4 The PWD Minister and Save Goa Front president, Mr
Churchill Alemao told the Save Goa Front, central executive committee that
Congress
at Centre has in principle agreed to give the Congres ticket to his lawyer
daughter, Ms Valanka Alemao for the ensuing parliamentary by-election in South
Goa.Mr Churchill was addressing the central executive committee meeting of the
Save Goa Front, held at Margao Residency today morning.

This is the first meeting of the SGF, after it was duly recognised
as a political party, by the Election Commission of India.

Sources in the party disclosed that Mr Churchill told the party
central executive committee members that the Congress High Command in Delhi had
90 per cent
agreed, to give the Congress ticket to his daughter.

According to a reliable source, the SGF general secretary, Mr
Siddhanath Buyao opposed the idea of Ms Alemao contesting on a Congress ticket.

He also said that the SGF will not support the Congress even if Ms
Alemao gets that party’s ticket, the source said. The party later decided to
adopt a wait and watch policy, and left its options open to either field a
candidate or not for the Mormugao parliamentary seat, which was recently
vacated by Mr Churchill Alemao, the source further said.

Mr Churchill had to face the ire of the party members for having
spoken publicly on the Mopa issue without taking the party into confidence. The
members asked Mr Churchill to take the party into confidence, before making any
statements or taking any decisions. The party president, however handled the
issue by stating that he was misquoted by the press on the Mopa issue.

The SGF has decided to oppose Mopa airport and took a resolution
to that effect.

The party also decided to cement its claim to have only one
airport in Goa, at Dabolim, the source said.

During the deliberations the members arrived at a conclusion that
the Congress government’s decision to have two airports in the State was a
total sham.

Goa cannot sustain two airports in Goa,
a senior party leader argued at the meeting and flayed the Congress’ tendency
of trying to fool the people, the source informed.

On the contentious casino vessel on river Sal, the party took an
unanimous decision that the government should keep up to the offshore
definition and push all casinos, including Caravela out of the rivers of Goa.

The SGF has asked the PWD Minister to make the party’s stand known
to the government and to take an appropriate decision in the matter.

The party was also unanimous in their decision to allow the
dredging of river from Khareband to Mobor, after taking due care not to damage
the rich resources in the river.

The central executive committee members also discussed ways to
strengthen the party and conduct a membership drive to enroll more members into
the party.

The party also decided to retain ‘aeroplane’ as the symbol of the
party.

The hidden side of Goa

Wednesday, 05 Sep 2007 07:03

Goa, on the east cost of
India, has a reputation as a hedonistic beach paradise. Around Christmas time
revellers from all over the globe gather to celebrate under the palm trees of
the state's warm beaches and enjoy the prestigious local cuisine.

But beyond the bright lights of the developed, costal beaches there lies a
beautiful and historic side to the region.

Goa Velha, or Old Goa, is a collection of extraordinary churches, monuments and
opulent buildings, well away from the commotion of the capital Panaji.

Officially abandoned by the Portuguese in 1843 after a spate of malaria
outbreaks, the town was formally the state capital and home to 200,000 people
during the height of the colonial period.

What remains today is one of the finest collections of colonial Portuguese
architecture in India,
if not the world. A collection of grand churches and cathedrals, originally
built to assist the conversion of locals from Hinduism to Christianity, but
still standing centuries later as a monument to the artistic and engineering
ingenuity of its former inhabitants.

The area was declared a UNESCO world heritage site in 1986 and today attracts
only a fraction of the visitors its prestige deserves; making it a real hidden
wonder.

Chief among the buildings of interest in Goa Velha is the Basilica of Bom
Jesus, which contained the relics of St. Francis Xavier, patron saint of Goa.
Its imposing archways and columns create space for
an exquisite 50 ft
alter dedicated to the infant Jesus, which has become a key attraction of the
area.

Begun in 1594 the Corinthian style building was elevated to the status of
Basilica in 1954 and remains a major draw for Christians from all over the
world.

The Tuscan St Catherine’s Cathedral is also an impressive sight. The building
is the largest church in India
and took 80 years to complete, finally finished in 1640. Magnificent in scale
and detail, the interior is home to fifteen alters arranged around the walls
with the ornate high-vaulted ceiling towering above.

Another attraction is the Arch of the Viceroys, built in 1597 to commemorate
the arrival of Vasco de Gama in India.

The region's fantastic surroundings can be reached by bus from Panaji, taking
around half an hour and costing only a few rupees, or alternatively by
auto-rickshaw, which is quicker but costs a little more.

Goa itself can be reached by a number of
airlines, including Qatar Air and BA. For the best prices take a look at Opodo,
or LastMinute.com.

The statestourism website
also has a host of local information designed to make a journey to Goa as
effortless as possible.

Landlords told to inform cops while renting premises

BY HERALD REPORTER

MARGAO, SEPT 4 — In a bid to keep a check on anti-socials
and terror suspects taking shelter in rented accommodation, the district
Magistrate, South has directed all landlords to inform the nearest police
station while leasing out their premises on rent.

In an order issued under section 144 of the Cr P C, District Magistrate, G P
Naik has diected all persons given houses or accomodation on rent to intimate
the nearest police station with details and identity of the persons taking such
premises on rent.

The security measure is being taken following the terror attacks in Hyderabad
last month.

The district Magistrate told Herald that the checks are being taken to
ensure that houses are not rented to persons who could be involved in
anti-social and terrorist activites in the state.

Sources in the know said the order has been issued following a
recommendation from the police in order to tighten security measures to keep
the anti-socials and terrorists at bay.

Naik said his order would remain in force for a period of two months from
Tuesday and any violation by any landlord would be dealt with under the
provisions of the Indian Penal Code.

Replying to a question, the district Magistrate said it is for the police to
bring to his notice any violation of the order before he initiates action under
the IPC.

Clinics to submit sonography reports every month

BY HERALD REPORTER

PANJIM, SEPT 4 – In an interesting development and a move
to clamp down on abortions and pre-natal sex determination clinics, the
district administrations have stepped in to act against erring clinics in the
state.

According to officials, the powers have been bestowed by the central
government earlier this year following which the North Collectorate today began
its new role under the Pre-conception and pre-natal diagnostic Technique Act.

According to the Additional Collector Swapnil Naik, the North administration
will inspect all such clinics numbering about 69 in North
Goa and also conduct surprise checks on all such clinics operating
in the district.

Mr Naik said, “The clinics will also have to submit to the collectorate on
the 5th of every month a report of all sonographies conducted in the previous
month which will indicate the kind of tests conducted.”

He also said that the clinics are required to display certain literature,
signages in the clinics. The North administration today conducted an inspection
of around five clinics in the taluka of Bicholim and it is learnt that action
is proposed against one erring clinic.

Vasco resident held for duping 10 youth

HERALD REPORTER

VASCO, SEPT 4 - Vasco police has arrested one Payal Vishnu
Patel (23) of Pixem Dongri Vasco on charges of duping 10 youth from Vasco of
about Rs 7.03 lakh, after promising them jobs at a shopping mall in Dubai.

Anthony Peter along with Sameer M Shirgaokar, Hassan Abdul, Anand Pillai,
Vinesh, Sayed Jallauddin, Mahendra Sarmalkar, Oscar Rosario, Narayan Dara and
Mohammed Gouse Shaikh lodged their complaints against one Samar Dev of Chennai
and Patel on Tuesday evening.

Narrating their story, one youth stated that they were familiar with Patel’s
husband, who introduced them to one agent, Samar Dev of Chennai, at Anapurna
hotel Vasco in March.

Dev reportedly told them that he had taken on rent a shopping mall ‘Royal
Falcon Trading LCC’ in Dubai
and that he needed salesmen to work in the mall.

He asked them deposit security an amount of about Rs 75000 each for visa as
well as for the plane ticket and additional Rs 3000 for immigration.

Some days later, Patel, collected Rs 10,000 from them and handed them
photocopies of the original visa. The youth were then asked to deposit the
remaining balance in Dev’s and Patel’s bank account.

When the youth did not get their jobs as promised, they confronted Patel in
August and she assured to return their money through Dev and she left for
Chennai.

On her return to Goa, Patel handed over
three cheques of Rs 2 lakh each to the victims, but the cheques bounced due to
insufficient bank balance.

When the youth threatened to file a police complaint, Patel requested for
more time and deposited her brother’s passport at the Vasco police station
besides giving a written statement that she would return their money on her
return from her second trip to Chennai.

  Dear Friend,

When shopping or when going out to purchase some item we often look for
bargains. We want to get the best of things paying a fair price or as cheaply
as possible, yet we know that nothing is free in life, everything has a price
tag. We don’t believe advertisements that promise us anything free. In the
spiritual life too there is a price to be paid for following Jesus. Are we
ready for the cost? Have a joyful weekend making wise choices for God! Fr. Jude

the two it belonged and finally sent her to the consul. The consul asked to
examine the coat, and brought it back a few moments later saying, “This is a
very serious affair; who so ever the coat belongs to has been smuggling

excused herself and bowed out of the room saying: “Just my little joke.” The

The second reading from Paul’s letter to Philemon not only shows the early

attitude towards Onesimus, one who was a slave and was converted to Christ.
Paul appeals to his friend Philemon not to treat Onesimus harshly as he
deserves for having run away, but rather to treat him as a brother in the Lord.
Both master and slave are bound by the same love and Onesimus needs to be
treated with dignity due to his calling as a Christian. Faith goes beyond

was not drawn from the well, my servant had been out all night. My morning meal
was not ready; my clothes were all lying unfolded. As the hours passed by my
anger grew, and I devised hard punishment for him. At last he came, late in the
morning, and bowed low. I called out angrily: “Go forth from my presence and
never see my face again.” He looked at me and remained silent, and then said
in a low voice: “My little daughter died last night.” And without another word
he went to his daily task.

In today’s Gospel Jesus speaks of the sense of detachment that we need to
have if we are to follow Jesus Christ. The demands of the gospel are serious
and far reaching and not to be taken lightly. Jesus demands exclusive loyalty
from those who wish to follow him. They have to make choices which will clash
with other loyalties. “Any one who does not carry his cross and come after me
cannot be my disciple. “ Jesus’ disciples must be ready to renounce their own
personal and family relationships and commitments in following the Lord. Self
renunciation and carrying the cross is rather painful, but that is the cost of
being His disciple. The parables about intending to build a tower and about a
king going to war are intended to drive the point home that following Jesus is
not based on an impulse but is a well-thought out, considered decision based on
reflection and readiness to face the consequences. Of course there are varying
degrees of commitment to Jesus but all have their
demands and call for some degree of sacrifice and renunciation.

SAG releases grant for Goa Jr athletics teamNT Sports Reporter

Panaji,
Sept 4 With the SAG releasing a cheque for Rs 64,000 this evening, the
Goa junior athletic team will ultimately participate in the west zone
junior athletic championship to be held in Vadodara, Gujarat, from
September 7-9.
Mr
V M Prabhudesai, SAG’s executive director, told The Navhind Times that
despite Goa Athletic Association’s (GAA) late submission of the
proposal on August 26 and the hiccups threafter which prompted the GAA
to drop the team, the participation grant was readied today. Mr
Francisco Sardinha, president of the association and Congress president
is learnt to have advanced the money. In fact, one of the association
members was asked to meet him yesterday, but it was the failure on the
part of this member to meet Mr Sardinha that things went haywire,
leading to the cancellation. However, things got sorted out this
morning after the sorry plight of the 24 boys and girls, who were told
by GAA that they would not take part in the nationals despite having
worked hard during the conditioning camp, was highlighted in The
Navhind Times that the SAG agreed to release the grant, although at the
beginning the GAA was told that it would not be possible to release the
money due to some technical reasons from the accounts section. The team
will now leave tommorow by train.
Meanwhile,
two sportsloving personalities - Mr C K Kamat from Margao and Mr Kishor
Narvekar from Merces - in a spontaneous gesture came forward to advance
the money to GAA after reading the news item in The Navhind Times so
that the young athletes were not deprived the chance of participation
for no fault of the boys and girls.
Mr Paresh Kamat, jt secretary, GAA, told The Navhind Times that
efforts were on to secure rail reservation from the VIP quota.

Remembering the teachers today
A student learns more from the teacher's life, not teaching!

It was TEACHERS' DAY in India earlier this week. It has been so since the
truamatic year of 1962, with India gaining Goa from the Portuguese and
losing a good part of the Himalayan regions of North East and Kashmir
Ladakh to the Chinese. It marks the then President of India, Dr.Sarvapally
Radhakrishnan's, birthday even in a generation that may turn around and ask
Dr.Radhakrishnan who?

It is not accidental that the day is always close to Gokul Ashtami, the
birthday of lord Krishna, the giver of the Bhagawad Gita, who is variously
known as Gopal, Gopalkrishna, Devkikrishna and Radhakrishna. Dr.
Radhakrishna may have got his name from the festival the same way we have
Noel or Noelaas the name for someone born on Christmas Day.

Gokul Ashtami celebrates the mischief of the youth of the same person who
gave the world the wisdom of the Gita. It is a good reminder to some of the
teachers today who expect school children to behave like saints, right from
Kindergarten to Ph.D ! I wonder what would have happened to the Makkhan
chor , who reportedly chased the Gopis [milkmaids] during his youth, if he
was to go through the present education system in India. Perhaps, he would
have become a Computer Software Professional in Infosys or Reliance or
whatever . or would have set up something like UNLEARNING UNLIMITED of
my friend and guide, Architect Pravin Sabnis, now also of QUIZ QUEST fame.

In the year itself, alumni of St.Britto High School, Mapusa, have lost four
teachers. Madame Christina Pereira from Colvale was the first to go in
April. She taught me French in the mid-1970s, after her family returned from
Africa. When she entered the class she had to be greeted Bon jour, Madame
and, thus, no person finished the year without knowing to say at least two
words in French ! By the end of two years a few of us could even speak a
little French. Incidentally, French was a language my mother taught in
Janata High School, Mapusa, with her former student and the first MLA of
Mapusa, Raghunath Anant Tople, as the Principal. Madame also taught English
as did my mother, Gracinda. Madame knew her students by name and would
sometimes call out when we were in Mapusa market, thirty years later!

Edwin Saldanha was a teacher who found out who did what best, and guided him
to do it better than he expected. He had a simple definition for excellence:
ten percent better than the next person. He pushed everyone to their limit
and at times we loved to hate him as the pushy Uncle Sali, a sobriquet
that went well with both, his surname and his the village of his ancestors
and his residence, Saligao. He started the Goa Bharat Scouts Guides state
unit and pushed a dozen of us[4 boys and 8 girls, including Dr.Meenakshi
Martins-Shukla, Dr. Marilyn Estibeiro and Annabelle Pinto do Rosario-Gracias
who are still in Goa] to the top, as President's Scouts and Guides. More
would follow. All of us remember him with pride. Of course, I did not learn
much about drawing, his official subject in school. It did not matter to
either of us, in class or in life beyond school !!

Miss Joyce Lisboa looked pretty even in death. A former Miss Goa, she
remained a spinster by choice. A wonderful French teacher, she taught in
St.Britto HS in the late 1960s and till 1973 or so. Even now , she was
teaching French at SFX Convent HS, Peddem-Mapusa.

Olavo Xavier Mascarenhas was a proponent of the Mens sana et corporo sano
[Latin for Healthy mind and a healthy body] and used the ancient regimen
to achieve it. Like coffee, some like it hot and some like it not! It is ,
shall we say not their cup of tea? To me , he was a great teacher and
sports coach. I admire him although I wish his ways of disciplining were
not as close to the Jesuit regime as to be uncomfortable to the current
education concepts. Times change and so must we. That is the lesson from the
fate of the Dinosaurs and the Dodos.

No, not all teachers of my generation are dead. Narayan S.Bhadti is still
teaching and has his former student, Shantaram Halarnkar, as his colleague.
My very first Scout Master, Shrikant Hegde, is still teaching in the same
school. Other teachers have retired on super-annuation, VRS and even on
not-so-voluntary retirement but under the VRS package just the same. It

School and physical education teachers - the fountain head for a sporting
culture
Armstrong Augusto Vaz

Fading photographs of school days remind me of the fading memories of school
as we go down the memory lane. A trip where one delves deep into the brain
cells to get memories on paper. School musing are sweet musings. An
institution, which prepares for an entire life ahead. Going back
nostalgically to the school days is the best bet one can lay hands on.

School teachers in my school days were fortunately affectionate to a batch
of students who at best could be described as good in studies, punctual and
epithet of discipline.

In school sports- games and sports - took a back seat thanks to our physical
education teacher. A teacher who lectured us on the rules of the games,
which we were both mentally and physically not prepared for.

Mind you it was not just football but a half a dozen rules of different
games, which we never played in our life, were thrust upon us. That was the
start of the academic year when we had to stay indoors.

So naturally in the rainy season PT period was the worst period. Thus a
mental block had developed.

But two things which clearly ring in my mind is his advice, to be physically
tough on the field and not to get frightened of the opponents looking at the
size of the opponent's body and to lose the battle, even before it is won.

Unfortunately, he was too immersed in his own world, that he hardly took
interest in fielding the school team in inter school competitions. Thus his
mental toughness theory remained at the back of our minds, but with no
chance to implement the same for us on the play field.

Sunny days saw us back to the school ground besides the church now covered
with a tar surface, where the boys still play football, cricket unmindful
of the serious damage they will be doing to the knee joints, playing on the
hard turf surface. The volley ball court had escaped the sword of the so
called development fad.

Sports was not certainly PE teacher's cup of tea. He said he was pole
vaulter a la Sergei Bukka, but alas, he could not give tips or glimpses of
the shade of brilliance he had in him in his younger days, dangling the pole
vault.

Thus we ended up a big zero on the pole vault front.

In football his apt repeated word came ringing back to my mind kick the
ball high up in the air. In spite of him hailing from God's own country,
he did precious little to encourage football or for that matter any other
sport, among his students.

We till date regret missing the nitty-gritty of the sports and the basic
training in football, cricket and volleyball, which we got latter in life at
the College level. Thanks to very cooperative physical education teachers.
Teachers who were at a more personal level friends to us and still dangled
the stick of discipline before us.

We never knew what is warm up and cool down, the advantages of warming and
cooling before any game. Those were alien words in school and playing for
the college cricket team was a big learning graph. The experiences which we
are carrying gamily in our everyday life and implementing on the sports
field time and again.

Some of friends had to bear the brunt of the attack of the school PT teacher
for not being able to do the exercises of the mass physical exercises to
perfection. Thus physical exercises were thrust open the young lads. There
was no choice.

The advent of television in Goa in the 1982 Asian games did not make a
defiant change in the out look of the PT teacher. The cricket fever just got
a grip voer my schoolmates and the school bunch themselves saw that they
arranged cricket matches with the neighboring schools.

A generation which grew up idolizing Kapil Dev, Sunil Gavaskar, Imran Khan,
Zaheer Abbas, G R Vishwanath, had many opportunities to display the talent.

We got a chance to play on turf wickets only when we turned out to play for
in the inter collegiate tournaments. Having played on matting wickets and
unprepared pitches with uneven bounce and having made to dance to the music
with pace. It was different lesson bowling on the well prepared pitches.

Tennis ball cricket is the emergence of the early 90's.As a generation of
the mid 80's we faced hostile bowling on unprepared pitches without any
helmet with no fear in the mind in the Diwali and summer school holidays.

Armstrong Augusto Vaz wrote (and I have summarised into points):

1: The duo come under increasingly eager Goans who jumped ship

2: 'For the Goans the first job in the US is working at a Gas station

can find a job within a month,' says Travasso.

3: Goans working in Indian restaurants owned by the Indian owners have
got their green cards through an amnesty from Bill Clinton in 1999

4: The cooks are paid mostly on a weekly basis ranging from $500 to
800 per week.

5: In downtown New Orleans waiters are offered $150 per week plus tips
and business is brisk and hotels are short staffed, and so waiters can
make up to $1000, informed some Goans who have been working there.

6: The Goan network of Americans is gradually growing and increasing
with every passing month.

== jc's response ==

My dear Armstrong,

Whenever I read articles like the one you posted, I wonder if what
Nehru and the mainstream Indian press said about Goans - was true.

There has been a stereotype within which Goans have been 'dismissed'
i.e. WHAT do they know ...after all they are just Cooks and Butlers.

The article posted by you, albeit unintentionally, strengthens that view
point.

I wish the Article relating to 'Goans in America - Seeking the
American Dream' and 'The Goan network of Americans' had also included
atleast one sentence about the intellectual and Professional Goans who
have made America their 'Dream' and their 'Home'.

If it had - it would have stated that MANY Goans are holding
significant positions and making significant contributions in the
fields of Education, the Arts, Engineering, Medicine, Accounting,
Information Technology, Pharmacology, Research, Law and Banking
...just to name a few fields.

For our general information - we may wish to know that for the past
100+ years, Goans have made quite a name for themselves abroad; a good
name - not only in the food service industry but also in the
professions listed immediately above.

They may not be beating their chests like Tarzan or Churchill - but
they are all over the place giving an excellent account of themselves.

good wishes as always

Bhandare/Bhandari et all,
It is really sad when you find out that there are
characters in this world who have not interacted with
their neighbours. It is even sadder when you find out
that some characters are clueless of the customs and

when you find characters who insulate themselves to

If you have not yet made contact with any of your

Capitalism is based on the premise that cream will
rise to the top. You are expected to enter into the
work force like everyone else, serving fries. Then you
prove what you are made of and rise to your competence
level.

The US, however, has its own idea of capitalism.
George W. is president only because a reservation was
made for him. I call him, Dear Leader. Yes, dear as
in the costs are high. He has since ruined the forces
i.e. the economy, dollar and military.

Lastly, the US invented the reservation system. They
perpetuate the system because it serves their needs.
Maybe those who you claim are oppressed will get
Indian consultants to fine tune the reservations
system.

Premji, if the comment is correctly attributed to him, makes a point,
but I do not support a generalization against Scheduled Castes and
Other Backward Castes and Tribes.

There are many learned, well educated and well integrated members of
these castes who achieved their success without needing the
reservations policy. They completed their educational pursuits with
good marks and worked hard in their professions which includes pilots
and doctors even if these were generally in minority.

Therefore to say:
Let's recruit SC/ST and OBC pilots for aircrafts which are carrying
the ministers and politicians (that can really help the country...)
and
Ensure that only SC/ST and OBC doctors do the operations for the
ministers and other politicians. (Another way of saving the
country...)
is both insulting and insensitive.

Never a bean off our sole coffee tree in Goa, the birds got the little buds
at sundown !

Thanks to Ven for intervening, and the 'scan' on my mental gyrations. You
did try, Venni, but I am not able to give our friend in Britain the time i
cannot spare, and i am not the windmill that confronts his lance. The last
time around, our 'Sancho' diverted a very busy Santoshbab into working on
his epic, of which we am very proud, but Sant probably wants to pound me for
the provocation. Piety went to school when it was headed by Ildeafonso, and
the Farias and Nobays probably revive unpleasant memories, but his campaign
today can be compaired to Russian/Polish anti-semitism -- there are no Jews
left to villify ! For better or for worse, few Brahmin priests, bhatcars or
overseers survive today, and sadly, their daughters are being filched by
caucasians.

I was numbed when i saw the Vietnam figures on Goanet. Some of it reflects
the activities of their people who have returned home after a stint in the
West. I believe the same phenomenon is at visible in India. Mozambique, with
its Durban based Parsee and Gujarathi planters, was once synonymous with
cashew nut production.

The Quilon family are Pillai, their face to us was Rajan Pillai, the London
based prodigal son. He further cemented the seventy year ties with
Planters-National Biscuit ( Nabisco-US ), and was, shall we say trustee, to
a one hundred million dollar Ross Johnson stash in Singapore. Ross was the
RJR honcho, and the 'barbarian' of the bestselling 'Barbarian at the Gates'.
The Britannia acquisition was a joint deal, but PIllai double crossed, and
Ross bought a fraud conviction, in Sigapore. Rajan fled to India, only to
become a bigger target: seized when he refused to play, it is believed the
political price was fifty million, he was allowed to die in a prison sell of
a mysterious bleed - who can forget the pictures that were published in
Delhi. Venn, your buddy Stan had a role there, write me direct ! Eric.

Hi Albert

Can you please tell me what makes you so certain about what you write about
God? Does doubt enter your consciousness at all?
Just asking

Hi Venantius

Many thanks for you interpretation of Eric's piece. I understood you
clearly and well. It seems a pity that Eric couldn't be as lucid as you.
Most certainly, a couple of my friends and I laboured over his prose and
ended up being pretty mystified and confused as to what on earth he meant.

I had no idea that Eric carried a stethoscope. No wonder, his written word
is a bit like a doctor's prescription---illegible to most! Thankfully,
prescriptions are now generally word processed. However, one thought has
just crossed my mind and I say this constructively. It is possible to speak
into a non-too-expensive small computer and have the words appear in print
without using a keyboard. Sometimes some can speak better than they can
write coherently and this may be the answer to Eric's little difficulty.

Of course, he could always use an amanuensis to help avoid discombobulation
in the thought and written process.
Regards and thanks again
Cornel

  Cornel,

Eric Pinto is very unique in his formulation of word relationships, as
well as in making analogies in thought and ideas. I enjoy his postings
which can appear to be cryptic, containing nuggets of thought
seemingly tangential but indeed do hold together. He would rate very
high on the MAT test. I hope you do not mind my attempting an
interpretation. I am not validating any opinions though, but
presenting my reading. Of course Eric will auscultate my head (perhaps
clobber with a stethoscope) if I have caused violence to his text!
