Averthanus L. D'Souza wrote:
The important point to be borne in mind is that the quality of an action is
not defined by the "consent" or lack of consent of an individual or a group
of persons. An action is considered to be socially undesirable because it
destroys the ethical foundations of a society. Adultery, prostitution and
homosexual activities clearly fall within the ambit of undesirable social
activities. Civilized societies have always condemned such activities as
being detrimental to social stability. To argue, as the National Commission
for Women is now doing, that a distinction should be made between what is
socially unacceptable and what is criminal, is to indulge in mental
obfuscation of the worst kind. As it stands, all criminal actions are
considered to be socially unacceptable. For citizens who argue that
prostitution or homosexual actions should be "legitimized" because society
has not been able to eradicate or control them, the only advice available
to them is: Go back to understanding your fundamentals.

--

The 'fundamentals' as understood by Averthanus of course. Which starts and
ends with his fundamentally Catholic perspective. Which makes for good
fundamentalists. Who are the people who divide the world!

But that aside, Averthanus mentions 'socially undesirable', from his
viewpoint, activities such as adultery, prostitution and homosexuality.

I wonder what are his views on consensual sex between two heterosexual
unmarried adults?
Can a widow have sex with a widower?
Can a divorcee have sex with an unmarried adult? Does Averthanus accept
that divorce has gained social acceptability?

Averthanus grand soap-boxing has nothing to do with an understanding of
society or sociology. It has to do with his blinkered view of what is
'socially acceptable' from a extremist Catholic view point. Nothing else.
Sex can only, according to Averthanus, be within a marriage contract. A
whole meandering essay on consensuality and social acceptability - just to
tell us that the Catholic Church's view is the only acceptable view for
everyone. All other religious or social institutions be damned.

Churchill Brothers crushes Salgaocar
Vijay Lokapally

Edeh Chidi performs hat-trick for Dempo Sports Club

LUDHIANA: A sensational run by Odafe Onyeka Okolie culminated in a dream
goal for the Nigerian as Churchill Brothers sank fancied Salgaocar Club
4-1 in a fascinating Goan clash in the Hero Cycles Federation Cup here
on Friday.

Earlier, Dempo Sports Club, Goa, riding on Edeh Chidi's hat-trick, made
an emphatic statement on its form with a 3-0 victory over United Club,
Kolkata to enter the quarterfinals.

In a pacy encounter, Churchill rose from a 15th minute deficit when Baba
Tunde Badmus scored with a strong left footer. The goal shook Churchill
Brothers from its slumber and produced a series of moves that rattled
Salgaocar. The motivation behind Churchill Brothers' revival was Odafe's
undying spirit. He received all round support too.

STs
in Goa get 12% quota in central govt jobs

NT Staff Reporter

Panaji, Sept 7 Fulfilling a long-pending demand of the Scheduled
Tribes in Goa, the central government has
approved 12 per cent job reservation for the community in government
departments and organisations.

The Minister for Social Welfare, Mr Pandurang Madkaikar announced
this at a press conference today. As per the reservation policy of the
government of India,
there is 7.5 per cent reservation in jobs for Scheduled Tribes in central
government departments and organisations.

However, central government departments and organisations
functioning in Goa, for them the government of India
has notified 12 per cent reservation in jobs for Scheduled Tribes in Goa. This
is applicable in group C and D posts in case of
direct recruitment. Mr Madkaikar said the long pending demand of the Scheduled
Tribe community was fulfilled through the active intervention of All India
Congress Committee general secretary, Ms Margaret Alva. He said it also
fulfilled a promise given by the Congress party to the Scheduled Tribe
community before the elections.

Mr Madkaikar also announced that the state government has notified
reservation in jobs for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes in
government-aided
education institutions, which are receiving Grant-in-Aid from the government.
This kind of reservation was not there earlier.

The Social Welfare Minister also announced that the government has
also notified 12 per cent reservation for admissions for Scheduled Castes and
Scheduled Tribes in all educational institutions in the state with immediate
effect.

Speaking about the Dayanand Social Security Scheme, Mr Madkaikar
announced that the government has decided to have a comprehensive re-survey of
all the existing beneficiaries of the DSSS. He said there are presently almost
one-lakh DSSS beneficiaries in Goa of which
almost 20,000 beneficiaries could be bogus or undeserving cases.

The government has received complaints that many people are
receiving double benefits from the government and a comprehensive re-survey
will weed out the bogus cases, Mr Madkaikar said.

In fact, the Chief Minister will host a meeting along with the
Finance Minister, the Minister for Social Welfare and the leader of opposition
on
September 12 to finalise the criteria for the re-survey.

Traffic
disrupted as PWD tries to clear NH-17 sector of mud

NT Staff Reporter

Panaji, Sept 7 The landslides on the national highway-17 at
Porvorim, on the western side of the Mandovi bridge, continued to disrupt
traffic for the third day today in succession even as public works department
engineers brought down a large portion of the cracked hillock causing more mud
and boulders to spill on the road.

The officials who were busy in bringing down the dangerous portion
of the cracked hill had to order stoppage of traffic on the eastern side of the
road for about two hours from 11
a.m to 1 p.m as huge boulders that came hurtling down
could have spilt on to the operational side of the road besides causing damage
to vehicles and injuring people.

The traffic disruption is likely to continue for some more days
even as the authorities continued the operation to clear the debris and bring
down totally the cracked part of the hill to eliminate further chances of
landslide.

The Chief Minister, Mr Digambar Kamat told reporters at hurriedly
convened press conference this afternoon that the state authorities had to
resort to traffic stoppage for two hours and divert it via Britona and Betim to
prevent any accident.

“We don’t want to take any chances,” he said adding that the state
administration has pressed four ferryboats to ease the problems of the
commuters. He also said that while the work of clearing the debris would
continue on war footing, one lane of the road would remain open for traffic
till the entire operation was completed.

He also said that the help of Geological Survey of India and
geological experts of Sesa Goa have been requisitioned to deal with the
situation and that the government would take appropriate measures as suggested
by them. “If suggested we would build a retaining wall and have a stable
slope,” he said.

The Chief Minister also directed the PWD officials to take steps
to prevent such occurrences in other parts of the state and asked them to
examine other similar sites. He said that the clearing o

Dear me!

Why are post-andropause men discussing sex, anyway??

 Averthanus L. D'Souza wrote:
"As it stands, all criminal actions are considered to be socially

ASOLUTELY CORRECT. "Corporal punishment" [including detention after
class, being made to stand up or kneel for long hours] to students is
a criminal act as per the Goa Education Act and Rules, 1986. Yet, many
Managers and teachers in Diocesan and Archdiocesan schools do not even
pause [men-o-pause] to consider this. To make it "Socially acceptable"
acceptable, they quote from Apocrypha [meaning "spurious" or
"unauthentic" ] Book of Sirach or Ecclesiaticus of the Old Testament
in the Vulgate Bible "Spare the rod and spoil the child" is the
refrain. What does the law of the land say, unambiguously?

What is legal MAY or may not be "Moral" or "socially acceptable" [such
as consensual sex between adults] but what is illegal or criminal
[such as corporal punishment and sadism/paedophilia disguised as
discipline] CANNOT be moral, as it is made out to be.

The NCW is doing its job well. there is no need for obscurantists and
fundamentalists to define the "fundamentals" for the society at large
.. while being absolutely free to preach it to the "faithful" from
the pulpits. The Catholic view is no longer Universal and definitely
not in India where it is a miniscule population.

Mog asundi.

The response below is sent by my good friend Wendell Rodricks. He was
unsure how exactly to post to GoaNet and asked me to forward this on his
behalf. Wendell can be contacted directly on

-

Dear Averthanus,

I do not like to write letters like these to older people but I am provoked
to do so here

Your views on sexuality are so outdated that you need to realise that some
people enjoy having sex. It is obvious that you are not getting enough and
I feel sorry for you.
If you are referring to me on 'We the People', please use my name directly
and not beat about the bush. I am on 'We the People' because of what I have
achieved. That I happen to be gay and enjoying a healthy sex life is
incidental.

I believe you can air your view because this is a democracy. But you will
also have to accept mine in the same manner. Under all the emotions of
sexuality is also a larger emotion of love. I am not just having sex with
my partner. We are in love for 24 years. And as God is my witness even
Jesus Christ will approve of love of any kind. Just because you were born
heterosexual don't hold it against gays. Be grateful that you have not
suffered any of the prejudices that gays have to face every day of their
life. We had no choice in our genes. Its like being born with blue eyes.
The day you understand other sexualities and get off the high ground of
moralism will be a better day for youand for us all.

And if you don't like to watch programmes that conflict with you opinion,
there is a simple solution. Like I do after reading one paragraph of your
writing and turn the page, just surf to another channel like Disney or
Cartoon Network or Pogo where the world is a nice rosy hypocritical place

With regards, not all fond,

Wendell Rodricks

In the year 2007, adultery, prostitution and
homosexual activities are condemned only in societies
run by Taliban types and their allies. Post-Christian
societies have already legalized prostitution and same
sex marriages. Canada has legalized adultery too as
one can now sponsor a "conjugal partner."

I do not see people lining up to move into societies
that condemn adultery, prostitution and homosexuality.
In fact, the opposite is true. People are lining up to
move into societies that are distancing themselves
from religion when making civil laws.

PS. How about this joke from a Catholic priest? A man
and woman come up to him and say, "Father, we have
been married for 46 years and have been having the
same sex all these years. We did not know that a same
sex marriage was illegal until recently."

The article below appears to be advocating the
criminalization of consexual sex and homosexuality
based solely on the personal religious beliefs of its
author. However, it does not give us a complete sense
of the nature of this parochial mentality. For this it
would be nice to know what kind of punishments are
being recommended for these "crimes", and what kind of
surveillance system would police people's private
behavior and sexuality.

Hi all,

I attended the 3 day international cuisine conference on Traditional Asian
Diet at the Hotel Fidalgo last week(goanet was on line media partner,) ,and
it was a very stimulating, interesting experience. However the response was
rather poor.
There were many celebrities who presented papers on different topics -
celebrity chef Sanjeev Kapoor spoke abt his ambition to make indian cuisine
famous all over the world ,Tarla Dalal spoke on healthy trends in vegetarian
cuisine ,NDTV's Neeru Gupta spoke about indian fast food, junk foods etc.
Our very own Maria de Lourdes Bravo da Costa Rodrigues presented an
excellent paper on the influence of Portuguese cuisine on goan cuisine.
There were laments that the number of restaurants serving authentic goan
food was declining.Every restaurant is now multi cuisine.
It was also revealed that our prestigious goan catering college at Porvorim
,has very few goan students .I talked to the Principal who told me the goan
students do not want to appear for the all India entrance exam and qualify.
There was a presentation on indian wines, and also feni.
It was interesting because every session was interactive ,and there was
dialogue between the speakers and the participants.
I do hope the Goa tourism dept takes a keen interest in promoting goan food
(both catholic goan cuisne and hindu saraswat cuisine)

Regards,

Melinda

Relaxing ways are watching National Geographic, Nature and other educational TV
channels. Recently there was a program entitled "Beyond the Big Bang". I
encourage those who come across this program to watch it. There are a few
points that Goanetters may find of interest, in light of prior discussions on
this web site.

In reviewing the progressive understanding of the planetary system, the
narrator states, Galileo's problem with the church was not his view of the sun
being center of our planetary system. This (heliocentric system) was first
presented (prior to Galileo), by many other astronomers, the most famous of
which were Polish Nicolaus Copernicus and German Johannes Kepler. In fact, one
Vatican cardinal told Galileo Galilei and the other cardinals, "The Bible tells
us how to go to heaven. Not how the heaven goes." Galileo's fall-out with the
church, according to the narrator, was Galileo's interpretation of the Bible to
meet his science, rather than sticking to his observational work, like his
other renowned predecessors and contemporaries working on the same concepts of
the universe. If Galileo lived in Northern Europe instead of Venice and later
Florence, his fate likely may have been different.

Later, the TV presentation proceeded to outline how the solar movements worked
and how the universe developed. The first individual to come up with the
widely accepted "Big Bang" theory as the creation of the universe (and as a
corollary, the end of the universe), was Belgian scientist, Georges Lemaître,
who happened to be a Catholic priest. (see Wikipedia below). Few scientists,
including Einstein, had difficulty accepting this concept and preferred the
"Steady State" theory which was the other scientific model in vogue.

The Big Bang is no longer just a theory. Proof of its occurrence was the
discovery of background electromagnetic radiation (generated at the time of the
Big Bang), by physicists Robert W. Wilson and Arno A. Penzias. For this
discovery, these scientists received the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1978.

Later the research was continued by Leon Lederman, head of Fermi National
Accelerator Laboratory, in Batavia, Illinois (about 40 miles west of Chicago).
Fermi Lab is America's highest energy physics research laboratory; and is a
great place to work for researchers and certainly a tourist attraction. Dr.
Lederman and his team worked with the highly accelerated protons to create
neutrinos and other subatomic particles to theorize on the origin of matter,
receiving the Nobel Prize in physics 1988. I had the good fortune in 1978, to
work at Fermi Lab as a Research Fellow using Fast Neutrons (also created by
proton bombardment), to treat cancer.

Kind Regards, GL

From Wikipedia:
Georges Lemaître, a Belgian Roman Catholic priest, predicted that the recession
of the nebulae was due to the expansion of the universe. In 1931 Lemaître went
further and suggested that the universe began as a simple "primeval atom",
echoing previous speculations about the cosmic egg origin of the universe.

Starting in 1924, Hubble painstakingly developed a series of distance
indicators, the forerunner of the cosmic distance ladder, using the 100 inch
Hooker telescope at Mount Wilson Observatory. This allowed him to estimate
distances to galaxies whose red shifts had already been measured, mostly by
Slipher. In 1929, Hubble discovered a correlation between distance and
recession velocity—now known as Hubble's law. Lemaître had already shown that
this was expected, given the cosmological principle.

After World War II, two distinct possibilities emerged. One was Fred Hoyle's
steady state model, whereby new matter would be created as the universe seemed
to expand. In this model, the universe is roughly the same at any point in
time. The other was Lemaître's Big Bang theory, advocated and developed by
George Gamow, who introduced big bang nucleosynthesis and whose associates,
Ralph Alpher and Robert Herman, predicted the cosmic microwave background
(CMB). It is an irony that it was Hoyle who coined the name that would come to
be applied to Lemaître's theory, referring to it sarcastically as "this big
bang idea" during a radio broadcast. For a while, support was split between
these two theories. Eventually, the observational evidence, most notably from
radio source counts, began to favor

The Kipling excerpt by Mervyn from The Young Bristish Soldier reminded
me of a poem written sometime in the 1980s on the Gallipoli campaign
of 1915 by the former Turkish PM Bülent Ecevit. Bülent Ecevit knew
Sankrit and Bengali and translated many of Tagores work as well as the
works of T.S. Elliot. I am excerpting the first two and the last
verses below with a link to the poem Çanakkale (as the Turks call
Gallipoli) site. Soldiers from Australia and New Zealand were referred
to as Anzaks.

"What land were you torn away from
what makes you so sad having come here"
asked Mehmet the soldier from Anatolia
addressing the Anzak lying near

"FROM THE UTTERMOST ENDS OF THE WORD I come
so it writes on my tombstone"
answered the youthful Anzak "and here I am
buried in land that I had not even known"

The full poem is here: http://www.canakkale.gen.tr/eng/poetry/poetry.html
and the last verse below.

"Iying side by side"
as "friends in each other's arms"
they may "sleep in comfort and peace"
in the land for which they died

And talking about cutting brains, regard the case of General George
Armstrong Custer upon death at the Battle of Little Bighorn, 1876: Two
Cheyenne woman were said to have found Custer's body.
The women...pushed the point of a sewing awl into each of his ears,
into his head. This was done to improve his hearing, as it seemed he
had not heard what our chiefs in the South had said when he smoked the
pipe with them. They told him then that if ever afterward he should
break that peace promise and should fight the Cheyennes, the
Everywhere Spirit surely would cause him to be killedI often have
wondered if, when I was riding among the dead where he was lying, my
pony may have kicked dirt upon his body.

IMPLEMENTATION OF SMART CARD FOR ISSUANCE OF DRIVING
LICENCE AND REGISTRATION CERTIFICATE BY MARCH 31ST
NEXT YEAR

 20:1 IST
The Centre has asked the States that the
implementation of smart card based project for
issuance of Driving Licence and Registration
Certificate needs to be completed by 31st March next
year by all the States and UTs.

At a meeting of State Road Transport
Secretaries/Commissioners of all the States held here
today, it was also decided that the computerization of
all Road Transport Offices (RTOs) of the States should
be completed by 31st March 2008 and linking of these
offices to their respective State Head Quarters should
also be completed by that time. Later on the State
Head Quarters could be linked to Central Level to
create National Register of motor vehicle data which
would provide lateral connectivity amongst RTOs. The
National Informatics Centre (NIC) would be the nodal
agency for providing the national connectivity, who
are in the process of formulating the project.

All the participating States agreed that there was a
need for immediate reforms in the road transport
sector. There was also unanimity amongst the States
for the need to have rationalized tax structure for
motor vehicles.

The Centre impressed upon the States that they should
evolve a mechanism to have unified check posts at
single entry point at inter-state borders to ensure
barrier free movement of both goods and passenger
vehicles across the country. The identification of
points on National Highways where such check posts are
to be created/set up should have the clearance from
the concerned Transport Commissioner and the concerned
Chief Engineer, National Highways.

The States were urged to take effective enforcement
measures to check the menace of overloading and to
ensure that the order of Hon’ble Supreme Court is
implemented in the right earnest.

The States were also urged to strictly enforce various
traffic laws enshrined in the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988
and rules made there under to improve road safety
scenario in the country.

At the meeting Competition Commission of India had
made a presentation on their recent study findings
concerning State Policies affecting competition on
“Passenger Road Transport Sector” to advocate
institutional reform to engender greater competition
in the Passenger Road Transport Sector. It was decided
that recommendations made in the study will be
examined by the States to imbibe greater competition
in passenger transport services.

The meeting was presided over by the Secretary, Road
Transport and Highways Shri Brahm Dutt.

GOAN GARBAGE, GOLD!
By Valmiki Faleiro

Nobody loves garbage. That is a truism. It also is a splendid part of our Goan
Identity.
Cleanliness is next to godliness and the Goan housewife understands it well.
Watch how
she conscientiously cleans her house and precincts spic and span, sweeping,
swabbing,
cleaning and collecting every spec of dust and garbage, and promptly tossing it
into the
neighbour’s yard.

>From a hamlet in Sattari to a township in Salcete, it’s the same everywhere:
>Goans and
garbage do not mix, regardless of caste, creed, wealth, or education. So much
that this,
our celebrated trait, has evolved into an acronym: NIMBY (Not In My Back Yard!)

Blame it on NIMBY, our towns stink and a once clean countryside is pockmarked
with
assorted refuse. Because the State has been unable to find acceptable garbage
sites.
No town or village wants garbage from other towns or villages, but wants its
own dirt
dumped elsewhere. Nobody fancies garbage in one’s backyard, even if it is one’s
own.
Much less a dustbin, even if on a road across one’s house. Garbage bins have
developed feet -- and begun migrating.

There was a recent ruckus in Margao, when a bin ‘moved’ after a swanky new
building
emerged behind it in the Grace Church area. In the Holy Spirit Church area
where I live,
a dustbin that existed at Mons. Ganganelli Rebelo Road since bins were
introduced in
colonial times suddenly shifted to a narrow lane by the Holy Spirit school,
where a bin
already existed. I wouldn’t object to two bins in such close proximity. More
the merrier.
The problem is the lane is so narrow that the side-loading garbage trucks block
traffic for
twice as long as before, having to empty two bins -- and forcing long detours
along our
one-way streets. The duo of privileged dustbins in this lane is at a distance
of some 40
metres ... and the nearest ones are a quarter kilometre away, at Old Market and
Borda!

For us, lay people, garbage is a stink: we immediately hold a handkerchief to
our nose.
For our ingenious politicians, garbage is gold: forget handkerchiefs, they will
delightfully
sniff around for more. What you and I regard as adversity, they see as new
opportunity.
These wizards have turned Goa’s grave problem with garbage, into gold.

I do admire Joaquim Alemao’s entrepreneurial spirit. As Minister for Urban
Development,
he is ultimately responsible for Goa’s urban garbage. He has a Midas touch in
whatever
he does for the public good. Together with his cohorts in the cash cow called
the State
Urban Development Authority (SUDA), he flipped Goa’s garbage glut to gain.

The Sakhardandes of Mala-Panjim pioneered in Goa, if I err not, the technique of
vermiculture in composting garbage, at their farm in Taleigao some three
decades ago.
More recently, HR Prabhudessai, a Senior Training Assistant at ICAR’s ‘Krishi
Vigyan
Kendra’ at Old Goa, popularized use of Effective Microorganisms (EM) in
composting.
Combining the two, Goa Foundation effectively managed Margao’s Sonsodo dump at
one lakh Rupees a month. Trouble is, cost-effective composting wouldn’t rub
well with
the establishment.

Eight crore Rupees are being splurged off the slopes of Sonsodo via SUDA, the
omnipotent cow not bound by standard public expenditure norms -- on some ‘Closed
Vessel Composting’ technology, untested anywhere in India. Half that amount was
almost siphoned off in a daylight pre-election heist, foiled by the project’s
consultants.
Joaquim Alemao is back as Urban Dev. Minister, the consultants on the way out.

Forget the fact that we can’t find place to dump the dirt, another Rs.1.25
crores is swept
off in style: on five ‘sweeping machines’ purchased without call of tenders and
without
engines to run them. Forget "cart before horse." Here are five Alemaoian
auriferous carts
without a single horse, before or after. Forget the stink over buying ‘garbage
compactor’
trucks, at Rs.14 lakh apiece. Forget that the compactors purchased for Zilla
Parishads
were not used for a day ... in remote Sanguem, the chairperson and chief
officer are
embroiled in war about a ‘doctored’ Council resolution -- over the purchase of,
what else,
compactors. Forget the stink of Goa’s garbage; just remember it also is gold.

‘CHAKA-CHAK’ CHAMATKAR: When politicos lead the way, can babus be far behind?
The stink on "Mission Chaka-Chak Panaji" was out. While volunteers worked

Turnover may double by
2010: Shrinivas Dempo

2007-09-08 11:19:42 Source : Moneycontrol.com

Shrinivas
Dempo always
knew joining the family
business was his calling. What he didnt know was how soon he
would have to take charge after completing his MBA from Carnegie Mellon.

Shrinivas had to return home due to his fathers failing
health. His only regret not being able to work in US before taking over. The
Dempo
group is a business house with its heart and soul in mining.
Over the past 60 years, it has diversified into a whole host of other
businesses. Recognised, as one of the architects of the Goan economy, Shrinivas
knew he had a tough act to follow.

Q: So whats that something thats
you always knew that you would sort of do or did you ever consider maybe not
coming, joining the family business?

Dempo: I was always resigned to the fact; coming from a conservative family,
coming from a family where I was the only male child I was right from childhood
resigned to the fact even when I was going to the US to study, it was told to
me that you have to come back.

Q: Was that a kind of a formal initiation into the group or
were you thrown in?

Dempo: There was a formal training program and I have spent enough time in
all departments.

Q: You wanted to do things your own
way, you wanted to bring in your own managerial or administrative style how did
you change things within the group?

Dempo: The biggest challenge I faced I believe that I did with some success,
was trying to change the focus of management from being largely
family-oriented, is trying to get it professional. So I felt that if I continue
putting enough attention to my name, I would lose focus into other businesses.
So thats the time I took a decision that yes, we need to professionalize the
balances of the businesses and we had started it with public arms.

We had Goa
Carbon - there we have a professional management team right from the level
of the managing director to below. Im happy to see that those businesses have
their own growth plan they are growing steadily.

Q: Something that
you have met with phenomenal success is of course, the football initiative and
Dempos gone great guns and you have won the NFL Federation Cup. I know from
1960s the group is sort of been involved in patronizing football in that sense
but for you, personally, did it start as early as college and school?

Dempo: It did start in school because that was the time I
used to attend matches very regularly and I used to find more time than now to
really be with the players, go with my family members watch and thats really
how the family created a lot of goodwill in Goa. What we are doing now, is we
are realizing the potential football has from not only the football
perspective, but from a corporate stand perspective.

Q: So you are looking at corporatising the sport?

Dempo: Absolutely, I think there is enough tremendous
potential in that and thats why we are investing
fair amount of money now because earlier, that was not the case.

Q: I believe about million dollars a year?

Dempo: We have spent about million dollars this year and I
dont think that budget
is going to go any less.

However
the one place where friendship takes a backseat is on the football field. With
a passion for football the Dempo name has now become synonyms with the sport.
Living upto the reputation of his predecessors Shrinivas has invested close to
million dollars into the game this year. A figure that expected to rise as
Dempo goes hunting for international talent. While his A team is off touring
the country making Shrinivas a very proud man; its the spirit of the Under-18
squad which he feels needs a boost as these young players will soon be a part
of Dempos corporate football strategy.

Q: Hows life
changed for you because youve gone places quite literally and not just with
business youve gone places with sport as well; hows life changed for you over
the past couple of years? What would you say has been the transformational year
for you in that sense?

Dempo: Particularly coming from the sector that we are,
business looks great. But there are threats in terms of where the future for
our business lies.

Q: But is
it the regulatory apprehension? The regulatory concerns thats weighing you
down or it just a market

Over 8000 People Participate in Monti Fest Celebrations at Mira Road

by Ancy Paladka
Daijiworld Media Network - Mumbai

Mumbai, Sep 8: The St Joseph church at Mira Road here, as usual kept
its tempo high for the extraordinary Monti Fest celebrations. Ripened
corns ("Bathachio Konshyo") were blessed and distributed to the
people, all children took flowers. Then people carrying either ripened
paddy grains or flowers marched on the roads taking Infant Mary's
statue in a procession lead by a brass band. Thousands of people
marched the main roads, side roads, gardens of Mira Road singing
praises to mother Mary and reciting prayers. It was a fabulous show on
the roads.

This is a beautiful tradition of honouring Blessed Mary Virgin on her
birthday and has been a virtual solemnity at Mira Road. People from
all walks of life have been participating in the nine days solemn
Novenas, this year concentrated on Family Values has been attended in
thousands. This tradition began 6 years ago after Fr Rudolf a keen
Konkani lover priest took over the charge and has come to its climax
this year with a crowed of nearly 8000 gathering for the celebration.

This day was marked by the auspicious presence of auxiliary Bishop
Agnelo Gracias, Fr Rudolf V D'Souza, Fr Deepak Thomas, Fr Peter
Rebello and Fr Elias D'Souza, concelebrated the mass.

The bishop in his homily stressed the importance of catholic values in
families and also to increase devotion to Mary to be nurtured and
valued.

Later he inaugurated the Family Cell of the parish, with 15 couples
being commissioned into this cell. Diocesan Family center also had an
exhibition with banners on the church premises about different
problems of family life.

The Parish website http://www.stjosephchurchocd.org was inaugurated
by the Bishop. The website gives all the information to the
parishioners about the parish activities and programme. The website is
the initiative of Fr Rudolf V D'Souza, designed and developed by
Mervyn Mathew and Dancia Jos. Mervin gave a short report of the
progress of the website.

Fr Rudolf V D'Souza OCD thanked all specially Daijiworld.com for its
timely reporting and invoked blessings on all those who were actively
involved in the preparations for the feast. He also thanked Paul D'
Souza who provided "Bathachio Konshyo" ( blessed corn) for
distribution. He also thanked Sebastian D' Souza for his help and
assistance in
all the arrangements for the feast.

The Konkani Welfare Association of Mira Road, provided the liturgical
band and arranged the procession.

The church campus is decked with the exhibition on the part of the
FAMILY CELL of the Archdiocese on FAMILY ISSUES. Lot of people
benefited this exhibition.

Lot of people of other faiths flocked to honour Mary and get blessings from her.

Hi All,
Cornel said:Brahmins were not confined to priestly functions.
Moreover, they were not expected to cross the seas but large numbers
did even before it was possible to fly and not technically cross the
seas on water! I repeat that, all this Brahmin thing is plain humbug.
Ans: If priestly function is not confined to Brahmins why don't they
(the Hindus) during Ganesh pooja hire a Kshatriya to do the Chants?
May be humbug these days. If so why not get rid of God alltogether?
That way the Brahmins can do the Barbers and Butchers jobs, and
Gaitonde can be a mochee, but first get rid if god.

(Therefore I think religion is foremost in caste system (after all it
was started by the brahmin priestly sect in the first place to put
themselves on the top)).
Cornel: Religion is not foremost in the caste system.
Ans: If not who said ONLY Brahmins should do Ganesh pooja chants? did
the Dalit say that or the temple Brahmins!

Cornel:This is why a supposed Catholic Brahmin Goan of either sex has
a great problem from his parents/relatives when wanting to marry a non
Brahmin Catholic Goan.
Ans: There is no SUPPOSED catholic Brahmins about it, they are
original Goan Hindu Brahmins.

Cornel: For instance, the parents would rather a bloke married a
little educated white woman than a highly educated non-Brahmin Goan
woman. Such is the level of their intelligence and integrity and there
are loads of examples to confirm my point.
Ans: As Selma once said, her mother knew of one PAKLO BAMON. Just like
Whites in South Africa considered Chinese as HONORARY WHITES, such is
the nature of the human beast.

(Again, British way of life, the royalty (head of the Anglican church)
will not marry a commoner - they see it as a class system, it actually
is a caste system.)
Cornel: I believe that it is still against the law for the head of the
Church of England to marry a Catholic but not illegal to marry a
commoner.
Ans. Then why did Edward have to abdicate? was Simpson a Catholic?

Cornel: Just one final point. Please please please do not equate caste
with class. The concepts are totally different.
Ans: Why not? Concepts are NOT different. A commoner cannot sit with a
Royalty in Church, this, I classify as caste system.
The English with their high English command decreed it as class and
not caste; for if they called it caste, they would be equating it with
the lowly Indian way of life (they were the rulers remember?)

Cornel:If you did, the casteists would love you for it because they
badly need to pretend that the evil system of caste, they have
internalised, is just like the more open system of class that has
emerged with the development of industrialisation. Please don't let
them fool you on this one whatever you do!
Ans: I repeat, get rid of God and we will not need the Brahmins doing
the rites, they can stick to doing the barbers (dentists) and the
butchers (surgery) jobs.
Goans will follow suite
Gilbert.

How does one know the final conclusions of a research
project before it is completed? How does one know that
the conclusions are valid and well-founded before they
have been accepted for publication in a legitimate
technical journal?

It is unwise to make such premature announcements in
the popular press and internet blogs. Moreover, as
Jose said, the title is grossly misleading. Even if
the premature claim is correct, it is chicken treated
with hormones, and not just chicken.

More importantly, the solution to the problem is
better regulation of chicken industry, and not just
pure vegetarianism or piscivorism. Hormone and
pesticide-treated vegetables and environmentally
contaminated fish might not be any better.

In any case, like Jose I have many questions about the
basic claims of this incomplete study. The most
pertinent ones are as follows:

1. How did the investigators single out daily chicken
intake as the culprit?

2. How did they single out hormones as the critical
determinant?

3. Did they actually compare the risk between
chicken-eaters, pure vegetarians and pure fish-eaters?

Cheers,

Santosh

Hi Cornel,
Thanks for the Dragon reference. My graduate studies were in Computer
Graphics (also Communication Design) and we kept up with all
information remotely related to computers. So I do relate to
technology but am not deep in it anymore. My paid work is for Ogilvy &
Mather Interactive in New York, as a Digital Artist; in design
production as opposed to Art/Creative Direction -– a choice I made
earlier. It has kept me sane, relatively poor (as far as educated
economic immigrants go -- no car or yacht, nor voddem: )) but allows
me to keep working on visual ideas, with an unfettered freedom of
expression. I sometimes do take on freelance projects which I
direct.Cecilia Castelino, my girlfriend since 1975, and a wife for
much fewer years, has played a part in my ministry if you will, the
visual really being my metier -- though so far it has not regularly
generated income! I am a grand fortysix years of age.

At school in Wadala, Mumbai I enjoyed languages and History, was
generally weak at grammar; partly because I could not understand the
logic and no one cared much to explain better. It adversely affected
my math ability. Cecilia often helps with my punctuation and on
occasion editing (which is still a horror, I feel) in my artists
statements and the short art related essays I have been working on.
Over the years it dawned on me that language can be a quiet companion,
and one may use it to dialogue analytically on ubiquitous conceptual
material. I began an exercise to argue with the weakest points opposed
to the strongest. So no matter, whether the opposite perspective is
superior -- to approach it (not attack -- rarely necessary to do so)
with the weakest possibility in reasoning. Not inferior reasoning, but
precise positioning of ideas. Sort of like a decisive stroke in
calligraphy but with an empty mind. I remember in until the mid 70s in
Goa and in Mumbai too -- folks discussing complex ideas or problems,
with slight interjections and modelling and shaping of thought. Then
the words would trail in the air. But the points were made, and often
graciously accepted. I liked seeing that in my grandfather and
granduncle and others of those times. They were terribly simple, in
many ways fearful of time, sadly very strict, but still reasonable.
Perhaps, there always was the opportunity to let the proverbial
rottweilers out, but it was preferred to just exercise them in the
verdant backyard! A slingshot as opposed to a sword -- imagine being
trained in Iaido but employing the katana only when absolutely
necessary.

The visual realm has been very helpful and kind in that we do not come
by our thoughts; they come to us. Of course one has to stoke the fires
of curiosity. At such a point of understanding, the nature of my work
changed. Well I can always draw birds, a dam or a temple at a highly
skilled level in a range of media and techniques, but would rather
look at notions such as, In the Distance of Affection, Order of Mind,
On/In/Of Sympathetic, Apathetic and Pathetic spaces (drawing
of/drawing out emotional spaces -- sexuality for instance), and so
forth, and its fine if needed to be said through birds, an object,
texture, impasto, filigree, frottage, or impasto.

In my mind I am a long ways off from real articulation, and never
wanted to write. That is not my job. Goanet made me do it. J'accuse!
To some degree this is true -- when one gets whacked with regular
monotony as part of the collective yet universal Goan head. It has
sustained and fed into my desire to learn. Other than that, its visual
thinking, for now, merely, thinking visually. I do appreciate your
compliment. But there is a lot to learn. It does take away from the
little time that I have to draw, and I am not being pseudo-contrite.
But considering the mode in which I now approach visual thinking -- it
must have been inevitable to write in my retarded articulation. But I
would like to be be extremely solid at Konkani, say in 10-15 years. I
like closure in paras and thoughts, and believe it prevents
misunderstanding, unless the goal is to create some of that. In that
case it becomes apparent very quickly. I know that my text appears a
bit taxing, but until I learn better, this is it.

I am very interested in seeing how language is used to manipulate
opinion and ideas. So I hear your thoughts taking into consideration
that you have tremendous experience and we are all so different

we are in the 21st century, so please update your outdated attitudes!
Interestingly, the original character, Rip Van Winkle was a henpecked
husband who loathes 'profitable labour'.

Jokes & legs apart,
the answer to the question IS CONSENSUAL SEX OKAY? is both Yes & No.
Yes, sex should be SENSUAL. Use all the five senses.
And no, it should not be a CON. Do not murder love, trust & emotions.

Well, can't get serious can I?
But that's better than getting angry with such prejudiced, undemocratic

“Utt Goenkara” has expressed grave concern regarding
the total breakdown in the public health
care system in the State.

“Utt Goenkara “ has strongly condemned Health Minister
Mr. Vishwajit Rane’s recent order withdrawing all the
administrative and financial powers of the Dean of Goa
Medical College Dr. V.N.Jindal.

In sidelining Dr.Jindal, the Health Minister had made
it amply clear that he had a hidden agenda to further
financially bleed the ailing Goa Medical College.

The state of Goa Medical College had reached a crisis
point where there was not even a single bedsheet in
the GMC stores.

Citing the example of the Health centre at the old
Primary school opposite Ribandar Church which was
inaugurated amidst much funfare on 23rd July, 2007 and
remains closed from inaugural day, Utt Goenkara has
warned that the Health authorities to stop taking
Goa’s “Aam Admi” for a ride.

The “planned” surprise visits of the Health Minister
to government hospitals were a mere publicity stunt by
Mr. Vishwajit Rane to divert people’s attention from
the grave issues confronting Goa’s Public Health care
system.

Demanding that political interference in the running
of Goa’s government hospitals should stop, Utt
Goenkara has stated that Goa’s poor and unprivileged
had a right to a decent health care facility.

Goa Medical College and other government hospitals
were privileged to have very qualified doctors and
government should take these doctors into confidence
to improve Goa’s public health care system.

With vested interests in mind the Health Minister had
managed to get his “family friendly private doctors
and chums ” into the hospital advisory and purchase
committees and this has understandably evoked a strong
resentment from the government doctors which will
only further ruin what remains of Goa’s Health care
system.

A delegation of “Utt Goenkara” would next week meet
Governor SC Jamir and Chief Minister Digambar Kamat to
apprise them of Health Minister Vishwajit Rane’s
devious plans and seek their intervention to save
Goa’s Health care system.
