Tri-Continental Film Festival - Report on Day 5 By Ameeta Mascarenhas Panaji, October 2, 2007 - The first Tri-Continental Film Festival held in Goa, organized by Moving Images, Breakthrough and The International Centre concluded today with the screening of Ashim Ahluwalia's 'John and Jane'. It has been an interesting, exciting five days, in which we have we have seen documentaries and feature films that have been eye-opening, thought-provoking, argumentative, surprising, moving and, sometimes, heart-breaking. The festival was a superbly selected package of 18 films from Africa, Asia and South America - the Global South, that deal with issues ranging from workers rights, gender and sexuality, border conflicts, war, women and children's rights health, religious fundamentalism and globalization. As one participant remarked We learnt more about these issues than from all we have been reading over the years, even decades. The first film screened today was 'The Take' directed by Avi Lewis and Naomi Klein follows the lives of unemployed workers as they march into abandoned factories and attempt to restart production a few years after the economic collapse in 2001. This leads to the beginning of a cooperative system in which in which ordinary workers feel empowered and participatory in deciding their future. 'Thirst' directed by Deborah Kaufman and Alan Snitow depicts the struggles of communities around the world to decide the ownership of the world's most valuable resource - water. Who does it belong to? And should water supply be privatized? The afternoon's film 'Venezuela Rising' directed by Jennifer Wager depicts the drama over four days before and after the public referendum in Venezuela to decide whether President Hugo Chavez would continue in office or have to step down and followed the people into the neighbourhoods of Caracas to find out how participatory democracy works on the ground. This film, on the one hand, was seen as a lesson in creating a socialist democracy outside the big power blocs and on the other hand was sharply criticized as a propaganda machine for a dictator. The festival concluded with 'John and Jane', Ashim's strange and almost fiction-like account of the lives of six call centre employees in Mumbai. The heady mix of American 'culture training' and fourteen hour night shifts combines to create a confusion about personal identity and what it means to be 'Indian' in a twenty-first century globalised world. Interestingly all the day's films, and specially the last instigated a lively debate on the issue of globalization, what it means to developing countries and whether we can enjoy its benefits without inheriting its evils. The films also provoked audiences into discussing some contemporary questions in documentary making such as a concern of ethics with respect to the subject of the documentary, the glamorizing of the South, and the power relations that come into play when European film makers attempt to project the South, or for that matter, when any person stands behind the lens and the person in the frame. For the organizers the healthy trends noticed at this festival were the consistently large audience including students, and people of all professions and nationalities and their encouraging involvement in post-screening debates. The popularity of the festival can be attributed to the press which helped a great deal to make the festival a success. Anuja Ghosalkar, Programme Coordinator Breakthrough, was hopeful that the next festival 2008 Tri-Continental Film Festival would be held in Goa. The experience of screening select films at two colleges and the discussions that followed indicated the need for hosting such outreach programs in colleges and communities. [Goanet] Review of Konkani CD NRI by Sanny de Quepem
TRI Continental Film Festival - Dona Paula, Goa, Sep 28 - Oct 2, 2007 http://www.moviesgoa.org/tricontinental/tricon.htm For public viewing. Registration at The International Centre Goa. (Ph: +91-832-2452805 to 10) Online Media Partner: http://www.GOANET.org NRI Konkani CD Review by Silviano Barbosa NRI CD by Sanny De Quepem Lyrics: Sanny De Quepem Producer: Music House, Mapusa, Goa Music: Chris Correia Recording Studio: Magic Touch, Margao, Goa. Price: I. Rs. 150/- After his very first successful debut hit Konkani CD Saibinnicho Tisro Segred, Sanny De Quepem once again presents another of his just-released Konkani CD titled, NRI. This CD has 11 songs: 1) The first track is the signature song NRI by Sanny de Quepem 2) Logn zaun foslim C.DSilva, Antonette, Sanny 3) Bhurguim Mai-Pai Naslelim Adlene Dias Quepem-chim Kirnam) 4) Mogachea Gina Sanny 5) Dothin Kazar C.DSilva (Lyrics: Jacinto Noronha) 6) Utor Rakh Sanny 7) Vishai Tujea Xetacho Conny M, C. DSilva, Sanny. 8) Soro Jr. Dias (Lyrics: Mario Dias) 9) Popai-e Ponos Zala Antonette-Sanny 10) Mai-cho Valor Conny M. 11) Flight Kuwait - Goa Adlene Dias. The track NRI laments the efforts and concerns of NRI Goans in lobbying the government and the politicians to do the needful for Goan NRIs well-being, education of their kids, direct air service to Goa, admission seats to professional colleges, etc., but it all goes on deaf ears and none of the named politicians have done anything constructive so far and even their website is inactive and no suggestions from Gulf NRIs are ever taken seriously by the government. NRI Gulf Goans have been in the forefront of the development of Goa but they have not received anything back so far from the government, who only cares for their foreign exchange currency. I loved Sannys romantic song Mogachea Gina which according to me is the best track in the album. It is a nice slow dance number and Sanny delivers it perfectly. Nice words, except that he repeats similar words like Mhojem nirmoll kalliz and Nirmoll kalliz Mhojem in the same chorus. Another similar Konkani phrase Xet konnachem ani kon roita and Ghorchem xet kiteak roina appears in two different songs. It is best to avoid such repetitions in one album. The next best song I liked was Popai-e Ponos Zala for its several racy double-entendres. Music by Chris Correia is pleasantly nice, especially his terrific guitar-play in Mogachea Gina and also the inclusion of trumpet in his band gives it a typical Goan music flavour. But as for the best music on CD so far, am still biased towards Maestro Josinhos rich musical talent. Overall the CD is quite good but it could be better. The songs are good and well composed, some with nice swinging and uplifting music, some with a philosophical touch, and some with cute Saxtti comic accent, which lends great listening pleasure to our ears. Some nice Konkani idioms like Uzo nastana zaina dhunvor, Kulop malo konn(em) go moll(em) hem der and other Konkani phrases and opareo on this CD bring out some kind of nice old nostalgic verbiage to mind. Sanny has made valuable use of great voices for this CD especially from sweet-voiced famous Goan singer, Conny M (from Prince Jacob Troupe) and also from a Goan all-rounder Tiatrist, character actor, comedian and unique-voiced singer, C. DSilva. Antonette as usual does her singing part well on this CD. The song Soro by Jr. Dias is okay but I think it is not quite appropriate for a child to sing this song about the Goan liquor, unless the virtue of the soro pertains to its medicinal value and not to its alcoholic content. Recording quality suffers a bit because of loud percussion and unwanted sounds in the background. The new-comer Adlene Dias needs some improvement and more polishing with her singing voice. The last song Flight Kuwait - Goa (Part 2), as a result loses its charm in the vocals section, but musically it is just superb, as no doubt you can recognize that this songs music (minus) is taken from the incomparable, Maestro Josinhos work from Sannys previous CD, STS. On the whole, the NRI Konkani CD will be a good addition to our listening pleasure and I hope Sanny De Quepem brings to our Konkani music world, more of his Konkani offerings in the near future in keeping with the high standard set by him in his first exceptional work, Sabinnicho Tisro Segred. [Goanet] AN EXOTIC COCONUT CURRY THAT'S A REAL GOA
TRI Continental Film Festival - Dona Paula, Goa, Sep 28 - Oct 2, 2007 http://www.moviesgoa.org/tricontinental/tricon.htm For public viewing. Registration at The International Centre Goa. (Ph: +91-832-2452805 to 10) Online Media Partner: http://www.GOANET.org An exotic coconut curry that's a real Goa Monday September 24 2007 FOR some reason, Slim Pickings has not often touched on Indian food, even though this asian cuisine, with its predisposition towards vegetarian dishes, is both healthy and interesting. From the end of this month right into the middle of October, Stillorgan's Indian Summer restaurant -- not easy to spot from the road as it is actually behind the Millhouse Pub on Lower Kilmacud Road -- is running an Indian food experience. The events are designed to introduce people to the enormous variety of cuisines in this vast country of more than a billion people. The events will run for five nights over five weeks, and each week the menu will concentrate on food from specific regions of India, starting with the food of the north this week. It will move on to the west, east and central cuisine zones in successive weeks. There will be two sittings each night, one at 6.30pm and another at 9.30pm. The four-course meal will cost 35 per person. The man behind the idea is Varun Dewan, who was born and bred in Dublin, but whose roots are in Dharamsala in the state of Himachal Pradesh in northern India, right next door to Tibet and China. Dharamsala is where the Dalai Lama made his headquarters after fleeing the Chinese invasion of Tibet. Varun is steeped in the restaurant business -- his uncle Asheesh Dewan runs the successful upmarket Jaipur chain of Indian restaurants. The executive chef of Indian Summer is Sanjay Nasa, who Varum head-hunted from the five-star Oberoi hotel in New Delhi three years ago. Here is his version of a hugely popular fish dish from southern India -- prawns in coconut milk and spices. This is as easy as it gets in terms of Indian cooking, and the dish delivers the wonderfully sunny and exotic flavours that are the hallmark of the cuisines of Kerala and Goa. Chingrai Malai Curry Serves 2 Ingredients 100-120ml coconut milk 2 onions, finely chopped 6-8 jumbo prawns ¼ tablespoon black pepper ¼ tablespoon cumin seeds ¼ tablespoon fenugreek seeds ¼ tablespoon mustard seeds ¼ tablespoon turmeric 8 curry leaves 2 tablespoons vegetable oil 25ml tomato puree salt to taste 40-60ml water as required Method Grind all the spices together -- with the exception of the mustard seeds -- coarsely in a mortar and pestle to make a masala powder. Make sure the prawns are shelled and veined. Heat the oil in a pan. When it starts smoking, add the mustard seeds and curry leaves and let them crack for exactly five seconds and reduce the heat immediately. Sauté the onions in the tempered oil for four minutes then add all the ground spices into this mixture. Add turmeric and sauté the prawns in this mixture for between three and four minutes. Lastly, add the coconut milk and boil for a further two minutes to reduce and thicken the sauce. Watch the timing, as the prawns may become tough if they are left boiling for too long. Serve hot with steamed rice, though Pilau rice is even nicer. To add some style to the presentation, garnish the prawns before serving with chopped coriander and some freshly-grated coconut. http://www.independent.ie/health/diet-fitness/an-exotic-coconut-curry-thats-a-real-goa-1086136.html Sanny de Quepem - Kuwait [EMAIL PROTECTED] Send instant messages to your online friends http://uk.messenger.yahoo.com
[Goanet] Hindu Janjagruthi Samiti Exhibition: An Invitation to Hate
TRI Continental Film Festival - Dona Paula, Goa, Sep 28 - Oct 2, 2007 http://www.moviesgoa.org/tricontinental/tricon.htm For public viewing. Registration at The International Centre Goa. (Ph: +91-832-2452805 to 10) Online Media Partner: http://www.GOANET.org Gomantak Times, Panjim, 2 October 2007 An Invitation to Hate Jason Keith Fernandes This weekend I had the misfortune of visiting the most obnoxious exhibition. Set up by the Hindu Janajagruthi Samiti, the object of the exhibition was to ‘educate’ the average Hindu about the violence by Muslims on the Hindus of Kashmir and Bangladesh. I say ‘educate’ the Hindu, since every display of violence was followed by a caption addressed to the viewer indicating that if they were Hindu, then these visuals should make their blood boil, and tomorrow this violence could possibly be visited on them. If they were not moved, they were not fit to be - and hence not - Hindu. The theme of the exhibition purported to be the violence occurring in Kashmir, and yet, addressing the plight of the Kashmiri whether Hindu or Muslim was not its concern. On the contrary, the attempt through the exhibition was to ensure that local Hindus see the local Muslim as the natural and necessary enemy. What this exhibition is, therefore, is a very clear and deliberate attempt to create communal divisions in Goa. Now I am not surprised by this display of anti-Muslim hatred, since one has gotten used to seeing this daily violence perpetuated for not being a certain kind of Hindu. For the Hindu right wing, it is not enough to hate only the minorities. Not being brahmanised upper-caste and minority hating is just as bad in their book. What is surprising is that this very blatant organizing of Hindus against Muslims (and by logical conclusion against the Catholics in Goa) is that it is taking place in the premises of the Kala Academy. Why the premier cultural institution of a secular state is allowing violent activities on its premises is a question that the authorities of the Kala Academy must immediately answer. The authorities can reprieve themselves of this abuse of authority only by withdrawing permission for this exhibition immediately. Worse, this is not just an exhibition; there was also a screening of inflammatory documentaries, followed by similar discussion sessions which were nothing short of unnerving. Walking through the exhibition, the organizing women clamoring quite literally for the blood of local Muslims, was extremely unnerving. I fancy myself as a reasonably rational individual not given to acts of passion. And yet in this environment, I was strangely drawn toward pulling down the posters, destroying the projector and disrupting the meeting that was being conducted, knocking a few heads while I was at it. It was when placed in this environment that I finally realized what it must be like to be a persecuted minority, and especially a Muslim in this country. Every apparently innocuous saffron flag is in fact a threat, telling you that your time is coming and you had better be careful. If then I, as an individual who is not being directly threatened here, who has an escape route out of the country in terms of livelihood options, should respond irrationally and violently to such stimuli, how would a Muslim, already on the economic fringes of society, and subject to no less that 60 years of harassment respond to this threat? The object of the exhibition then, is twofold. It is first to tell the individual that you are Hindu (or not Hindu) first, and that every Muslim is your presumed enemy and you should ‘get’ them before they get you. The objective: The creation of a communal divide, and an invitation to violence. It exceeds this-one sided mobilization however, and also operates as a provocation to local Muslim groups. Of course, once the Muslims have been hounded enough to retaliate, all of society will turn around, refuse to see the provocation and shrug, saying “It is true, these Muslims are violent by nature.” A minimum of 60 years of such violence has produced nervous and insecure Muslim groups in India. 60 and more years of Hindutva aggression has created the communal bloodbaths of this country, and the current exhibition is a fantastic example of who and what is responsible for it. This particular exhibition has been touring Goa for some months now and it is a sign of the power and arrogance of these groups that they dare to take over the Kala Academy, the space of the secular and sophisticated in our capital. This is nothing less than a final flexing of muscle before they act out their fiendish agenda. While we must guard ourselves from this venom, they must first be cast out from the Kala Academy and the Academy asked to explain how they got there in the first place. -- Question everything --
[Goanet] Konkani joke CHOPKO BHOR CHONNEM (Handful of grams)
TRI Continental Film Festival - Dona Paula, Goa, Sep 28 - Oct 2, 2007 http://www.moviesgoa.org/tricontinental/tricon.htm For public viewing. Registration at The International Centre Goa. (Ph: +91-832-2452805 to 10) Online Media Partner: http://www.GOANET.org Somehow the last line of the joke went missing; hence, posted again. CHOPKO BHOR CHONNEM (Handful of grams) Khornan bazlele chonnem (oven-fried grams) are Goans' favorite. As children, we always carried them in our pockets on our way to playfield. We eat them while we relax and chat, and with afternoon tea. Drinkers eat them as chakna with their drinks. Like nuts, they taste very good in the monsoon season. Anyone who visited Friday Mapusa bazaar would not and does not return home without buying at least one podd (a wooden measure) bazlele chonnem. Similarly, it's a must purchase at every feast fair in Goa. In the past, we usually stored them in a glass bottle, which was closed with a “guddi” (cork) so they remained sealed and fresh/crispy. These days, people store them in tins or plastic containers; thus, “kednaim te xelletat” (sometimes they become stale/soft). One day a mother went to Mapusa Friday bazaar with her young son. She decided to buy four “poddi” oven-fried grams. Since she was buying quite a big quantity, the “chonnekar” (grams vendor) kept on asking her son to take a handful of grams from the pile but the boy wouldn't. We know children are very clever so much so sometimes they outsmart their parents. No wonder they say “ek aikonchem khuim lhan-hachem nam zalear vhodd-hachem” (you listen either to a junior or senior). The following Konkani joke taken from Joe Rose’s audio cassette “Kantaram ani katkutleo” tells us why the boy wouldn’t take a handful of grams despite being forced: CHOPKO BHOR CHONNEM (Handful of grams) Ek bail aplea dakttea putak ghevn Mapxeam bazaran geli. Tinnem evzilem chear poddi chonnem ghevnk mhunnon. Itle sogott chonnem gheta mhunnon, tea chonnekaran tichea putak oxem mhuttlem: Chonnekar: Ar’re! Ek chopko mar’re, tuka thodde kadd re! (Ph: +91-832-2452805 to 10) Online Media Partner: http://www.GOANET.org Ok, I will jot down what was taught to us at school in the UK (1961 to 1966) when we arrived from Goa after Independence. and History was drummed into us as much as doing the sign of the cross at Easter at Loyola High School 1957 to 1961. Queen Victoria was the last Hanovarian Monarch. Her husband Prince Albert was the son of Ernst, of Saxe-Corburg Gotha. Because HE was German HE was not in line to be KING of England, SHE was not therefore taking his on HIS title or anchestry though both were from German stock (SHE was the grand-daughter of George III who was the first British Monarch of the Hanovarians who was actually BORN in England (also never visited his ancestral homeland though he was also a King there at the same time he was King in England). Victoria took over the reigns of Monarchy from her Uncle King William IV, but HER descent from the German line was via a different route), SHE was the last HANOVARIAN, HE was SAXE-COBOURG GOTHA. But they were FIRST COUSINS (which in some countries is considered incentuous illegal but in others it is not forbidden, allowing the rich to keep their loot within the family as it were) THEIR SON (later Edward VII, also known as Bertie by the family), was Monarch of England for only 9 years was also the Emperor of India etc etc, (his mother, Queen Victoria was Empress of India about mid-way through her reign) had inherited his FATHER Prince Albert's family name (as an offspring does), though Queen Victoria did not, she was the RULER, he was the consort, not a RULER (whatever that means nowadays, but in those days it meant he had a lot of influence was regarded as the Head of the Family - England as well as his own immediate family). But still a Prince and there to ensure he fathers as many children as possible The Royal Family's name was changed to Windsor on the advice of the Earl of Mountbatten (LOUIS MOUNTBATTEN) who was himself a BATTENBERG, (oh yes of where the Battenberg Cake originated), He held the post of The last Viceroy of India (Jawahalal Nehru was rumoured to have had some some assignations with his wife during the hot summer days cooler evenings... mmm but I digress), Earl Mountbatten was named after his father, who was a Prince, LOUIS of Battenbourg, who in turn was the great grandson of Queen Victoria). Strangely or ironically enough he was born at Windsor a year before Victoria died some many years before the Royal Family changed ITS name to Windsor. Confused? Dont be, its all in the name (or is it game...) ... and lots of carefully crafted marriages so they ensured there is no in-breeding! If marrying you first cousin is not in-breeding I dont know what is, perhaps at least not like the pharoahs of ancient times when they were married off to their own brothers sisters. If I remember my recent history, the Belgian Family still retains its original name is still Saxe-Coburg Gotha as are some other old European families. Queen Victoria was a very clever lady, (hated giving birth but this arguable as to how often ANY woman in her right mind would say she LOVED giving birth, debateable) the sight of children around her drove her to distraction, she wanted them out of the way most of the time ruled her family as she ruled the country, she quickly married all her offspring grandchildren to European Royal Families! Permit me to digress a little link up some other events. Even her grand-daughter Alexandra (returned to the german line by her mother) was married off to the then Tzar of Russia, Nicholas Romanov (we know what happened to them when they became so autocratic irresponsible, they got over-thrown slaughtered on the instructions of Lenin in 1917, while the King of England who was a mirror image of the Tzar REFUSED to help them exile in UK, due to the WAR the GERMAN ancestry of the British Monarchy, a shame, after all they were COUSINS!!). Ah, history, it just repeats itself, over and over... Anyone going to sort out Mugabe his regime or are the other African countries Heads of States / Presidents Despots too afraid of him? Or maybe the fact that he is black, its ok to demean, starve to death the whole population so he can buy more country estates land in France, Switzerland shakes the hands of the rich and famous, the other Heads of States, Presidents Despots' hands at summit meetings? WHAT is LIKE to have his

(Ph: +91-832-2452805 to 10) Online Media Partner: http://www.GOANET.org I would like to arrange a visit to Goa next year, after being away for so many years. It has been a very trying difficult time since we left in 1961, but the first 40 years there was no chance of ever going back, whilst mother was still alive.. I have no family on either side, maternal or paternal left to help me, only my younger brother whose memory is worse than mine. I have been on Genes reunited for some years now, trying to find family members in Lisboa Portugal and in Goa where I KNOW there are still family members living. My only problem is that I remember only LOYOLA HIGH SCHOOL in Margao my time there, though a bit hazy it is a lot brighter than when I was at home, which I remember the road, the house, the trees garden at the rear, the long walk to the toilet at the back of the garden where the pigs were used to eat the remains that dropped down the toilet into the gully where they lived (ugh, but true), I remember the neighbours immediate vicinity, the shop where we could buy one square of chocolate at a time from a big slap of Cadbury's, but not the NAME OF THE ROAD, nor the area, it could be Ponda, it could be just outside Mapuca or literally anywhere. I have tried contacting LHS in the past but called at the wrong time(s) or was not allowed to call whilst my mother was alive, and instructed by my mother not to have anything to do with my paternal side of the family. I obeyed her but this has only made my curiosity increase with the years passing by, as you grow older, the years pass by quicker each year. It only seems like yesterday Now I am 57 years old have had the SAME itch several times this last 12 months to go back and re-visit places of my childhood. My wife of 18 years my two daughters aged 16 10 are very supportive of my returning back there, alone or with them, its up to me they say (smiling / pleading / you guessed it, WITH them in tow...). I would like to do this next year before we begin the rest of lives in Mauritius (my wife's homeland our working retirement house with a B B attached house). I would never be able to sleep comfortably at night if I never set foot in Goa ever again. Its got to such an extent now that some days I feel that if I just get a ticket NOW, and then find somewhere to stay when I arrive, this will do. But of course it takes planning. No point in getting to Dambolim find myself stuck somewhere a tourist would end up. I fly 10,000 kilometres every two years to Mauritius but have never been able to return to Goa whilst my mother was still alive. She passed away some years ago the itch returned, I MUST see MY old Goa again lay down some ghosts to rest. There are many they need to get their own place of rest, not on my back for the past 46 years! I dont want a 3-star plus hotel dips in the river or sea. I want to go back to Panjim, Mapuca, Margao, Ponda, the seaside yes, but only for the enjoyment of the sea the food, the long days long evenings, the singing, the Hindu festivals, our old house... Any suggestions, please email me on [EMAIL PROTECTED] or post on this forum, I am happy to share my experiences of my re-visit Goanet posters anyone who wants to know what happened when I returned. I WILL BE BACK !! But I need guidance help from all Goans on this forum to help me fulfil this one last dream of mine. Can anyone give me suggestions on HOW to get around Goa attempt to find my father's relatives? I contacted a few MONTEIROs in Goa, from Hotel manager, to gardener, to boat owner, clerical worker in a museum. I know / remember only LHS, Mapuca market of four and half decades ago, a couple of old cinemas probably long closed down and some old black white photos of me on my FIRST COMMUNION at LHS in 1959 with Brother Canna next to me. I heard he died of cancer as few years ago is buried in Pune, where I would also like to visit. But apart from this, I have only the death of my female cousin who lived on the next road to us, her burial card with her name on it (Agrapina _) couple of photos of my mother with us two boys her best friend Maria D'Souza, (wearing a sari) and if she were alive she would have been around 70yrs to 77 years old today. Anyone help me out here? Any all suggestions would be most welcome. I will try all avenues to get to our old house in Goa, I remember there was a small chapel at the end of the

Sometimes the treatment takes a very long time and still you do not get cured and that leads to frustration. We are prepared to move from one doctor to the other doctor. But seldom we turn to Jesus and held our hands to him and say Jesu ami buddtanv, amcam salvar kor Jesus we are sinking save us. In chapter Luke Jesus was sleeping in a boat and the disciples were in the middle of the sea and the temptest broke out. Every disciple wore a panic look and finally they felt that Christ could save them. They woke up Jesus and shouted for help .Jesus made the sea calm. Why can't we just look at Jesus and say to him, Jesu ami buddtanv amcam salvar kor ? Last year in the month of August I woke up with a swollen leg and could hardly move .A dark clouds surrounded my mind as I felt I was a burdern to my wife and family members whom I had to worry now and then for least things . I felt dark clouds surrounding my environment and could see no lights. I was desperate with my self and felt everyone had desserted me. My wife and children did not grumble at all and were very sympathetic but I had no peace of mind .I began to hate myself for being miserable and in the dark enviroment I could see a faint light and heard a voice Maim hoon nam ? I felt Jesus calling me and saying I am there .I am that Light that you can see, do not be afraid I shall be with you till the end of times. I got courage to come out of darkness. Such a question for discussion purposes would not be problematic, in the least, in most broadly liberal societies in the world and I therefore wish it were not problematic for you two in Goa as well. Moreover, both your responses were incredibly vague, woolly and thoroughly unhelpful. Should not you both, charged as providers of moral guidance in Catholic matters, necessarily provide a coherent Catholic response to the above question? If this is the level of an intelligent response provided by members of the Goa clergy, I am surprised anyone can take such respondents seriously at all. Indeed, it echoes Fr Loiola's failure to respond, despite several reminders, to five genuinely inquisitive, and not terribly demanding moralistic questions of mine on caste and the Catholic Church in Goa. I respectfully have to ask what on earth you think your business is, if when choosing to engage on Goanet, you can't provide even elementary moral guidance on the question above, are haughtily but uninformatively dismissive of it, and fail to respond to my earlier moral query about caste and the Catholic Church? I also most respectfully suggest that, the Archbishop of Goa reflects on whether you both, as holders of senior offices in the Church, are fit for purpose. Dr Cornel DaCosta, London, UK. Fr. The main speaker was Prashant Naik of Goa Hitrakhan Manch who said the students have been seeking justice in a peaceful manner and reminded that past students agitations against vital issues have always been seen successful. He reminded the government that again these are Amm-Admi students who have been victimized and any Goan being denied his rights and facing discrimination from Government Officers is not acceptable and in view of which the Government should immediately appoint a new HRDF Chairman in place of Aleixo Da Costa who has proved his incompetence by being vindictive, unethical and shown gross neglect in duties. He said the Manch in the past have tackled dictatorial officers of Kala Academy and Goa Meat Complex Officials and will not hesitate to take similar action against SDCT Director if he is not removed forthwith. The Government should note that the students know to behave like Gandhi as well as Bhagat Singh if the situation so demands. Mr. Francis Braz Principal of TAME said that all the students demand is for justice and not favour. He explained in detail how the examination process has been brought to total disrespect and there is clear evidence to prove the total neglect and misconduct by the HRDF Chairman Aleixo Da Costa. He further informed the students that the latest strategy adopted by HRDF Chairman is to pressurize Mr. Raikar Asst. Labour Commissioner to declare the results so that the examination scam does not come to light. -- 2 -- Mr. Braz wondered why Mr. Aleixo da Costa was not taking interest and issuing certificates of students who have passed in 2006 which till date have yet to receive the same. He said the results were normally declared in December/ January and the students who have appeared are not dependent immediately. So please don't rush with results before inquiry is completed. Mr. Braz informed the students that HRDF institutes had full faith in the present Government of Mr. Digambar Kamat but has been misled and misinformed for which no action has come. He said the Chief Minister who is already overburned with political problems is being unnecessary troubled by Mr. Aleixo Da Costa and said that the fight for justice would continue and Truth will prevail. Need be he and the principals will go on an indefinite hunger strike to seek public awareness and sympathy. He informed that some students have planned to file a petition before the High Court if no judicial inquiry is held. Mr. Pandurang Naik Principal of Rajaram highlighted the present morale of the ITI instructors and how 4 staff have suffered of heart attack on duty due to the harassment of the SDCT Director Mr. Aleixo da Costa. He informed that HRDF institutes have been doing yeomen service to the AMM-ADMI because almost all students are gainfully employed and wondered why the HRDF Chairman is antagonizing the institutes and poor students. He requested all like minded NGO's without any political creed to support this young goan student agitation for justice and peace. (Ph: +91-832-2452805 to 10) Online Media Partner: http://www.GOANET.org AMBAULIM IS MARCHING TOWARDS EPIDEMIC Ambaulim village of Quepem taluka is situated at a distance of about 3 kms. from the Quepem towns. The Quepem Cuncolim road passes through Ambaulim village. While speaking about Ambaulim, I am speaking Ambaulim in terms of its Religious jurisdiction and not political jurisdiction. Entire village panchayat Ambaulim and part of Deao village now forms part of Quepem Municipal council forms part of Ambaulim. The total population of Ambaulim is around 5000 out of which 3800 are catholic and around 1200 are Hindus . That out of which schedule Tribe, particularly gawdas ( Christian and Hindu Gawdas) forms more than 95% population of Ambaulim. As compare to other villages of Goa which are marching forward, I may not be wrong if I say that Ambaulim is marching backward. The village is socially, educationally and economically backward. The main economy of the village is agriculture . There are very few graduates in the village who can be counted on the fingers. However the village is rapidly marching forward in the field of vices. That around 60% of the male population of the village is intoxicated towards drinking, eating tobacco and smoking , out of which 40% are habitual drinkers/tobacco eater while the remaining 20% are occasional . The number of male population who are getting intoxicated towards drinking/tobacco eating goes on increasing years after year. The total number of Bars and restaurants in entire Ambaulim are 31 in number , out of which 10 are restaurant, of which three are within the jurisdiction of Deao (QMC) while 7 comes within the jurisdiction of V. P. Ambaulim and 21 are Bars/Taverns (with a licence to sell only country liquor) of which 10 comes within the Jurisdiction of Ambaulim while 11 comes within he jurisdiction of Deao village (QMC). Considering the entire total population of Ambaulim is 5000 , for 161 population falls 1 bar and restaurant. Apart from the above mentioned legal Bars and Restaurants there are a dozens of illegal Bars/taverns. Most of the Bars and Restaurent/ Tavernas does not follow the timing laid down by the excise department which is 9.00 AM to 11.00 PM. However they are functioning like hotels as some of them opens even at 5.00 AM while other at 6.00 AM. Some of them even have entry through their residential house, as even their main door is close they are functioning through inside. The total numbers of death takes place among the catholic community in a year is around 50 people, out of which more than 50% death are in the age group of 35 to 50 years and most of them due to Alcoholic problems. The number of death rate of this age group is increasing constantly thereby increasing the number of young widows in the village. This also creates social problems in the village . Inquiries from the doctor practicing in the village revealed that every day at list 5 to 7 patient attend to his clinic due to problem of liver disorder. If the entire scenario is seen it can be predicted that Ambaulim is Marching Towards Epidemic in the years to come if no steps in the right direction are taken to bring the situation under control - Luggage?
