The law is ineffective, corrupt and unable to aid the common man. The common man inturn has become a vigilante, little realising that such action has no place in civilised society. This brings to mind cowboy Westerns set in the early 19th century, where frenzied mobs would circle prisons to lynch inmates. Heaven forbid if the girl had mistakenly identified an innocent man. Hi Ed, I had only fleetingly heard of a Black Madonna and hence was not too familiar with the subject. Wikipedia has a pretty good write-up on it if you are interested in the subject. Gypsies is ofcourse the derogatory word used for Egyptians by Europeans. The worship of the Black Madonna is most prominent in Egypt. As I said in my earlier post, the cult of the Virgin Mother, Divine birth, Divine King, all emanate from Middle Eastern mythologies. One of the best books I've read on the subject is "The Jesus Mysteries" by Freke and Gandy. In my opinion it is by far one of the most influential books of the 21st century. That and the "Golden Bough", ofcourse, written much earlier by Frazer. selma --- --- edward desilva <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > Hi All, > Can any one please elaborate on the belief that > the Gypsies believe in the Black Madonna. > ED, > Selma said: > The Cult of the Virgin Mother, predates > Christianity. > It is infact a remnant of mythology, customs and > prevailing half-truths that abounded in the Middle > East circa 2000 BCE. > > > - > Yahoo! Its an amazing feat considering that some US politicians keep referring to Indians as "Macacas." The political achievements of a first generation citizen will not be news worthy in Canada. In fact, the political achievements of an immigrant are hardy mentioned here since approx 30% of the members of Parliament are born outside Canada. My MP is a Muslim women from Tanzania. One Indian couple from Vancouver arrived in the country as refugees and were both MP's within five years. Here is what the Times of India had to say about Bobby. http://timesofindia .indiatimes. com/World/ The_United_ States/Jindal_ faces_challenges _ahead_as_ Louisiana_ Governor/ articleshow/ 2478539.cms While studying in Alabama, I picked up a saying, "Thank God for Louisiana." Alabama always ranks about 49th in the US on education, health, jobs, etc. Mississippi and Louisiana usually compete for the last place. [Goanet] Air-hostess ... Part II
Air-hostess ... Part II Well, I am sure, by now you all know who the killer is.. It was none other than the Air-hostess himself. Himself? Yes, the air-hostess was actually a male and not female (the character I mean and not Aplon). We were wondering as to why the group of 'Indian Eunuchs' was shown more than once. We even said it was completely out of question. Later on, it was also shown the air-hostess was very supportive to this community, helping in sending them back to school, financial help etc It was only in the end, all come to know about the killer and the reason behind the killings (as partly seen in the clip). http://youtube.com/watch?v=cwZALCw6c_s The fourth husband was actually a CID (played by Rosario Botelho-Last year's best Actor award winner). The air-hostess caught red handed (she used to kill husbands by poisoning their drinks on the wedding nights). While admitting the killings, the air-hostess confessed as to why she did it. (Obviously, to keep the secret i.e. not to disclose to anyone about the air-hostess being male and not female). She married to them all not beacuse she wanted to but to please them all. And 'killings' (out of fear) seems to have become her passion. Strong message was sent to the Govt. and the society that they (Eunuchs ) too are human beings and not rejects of the society. They too need support and all the help from the society and the Government etc etc For this, there was a louder public applause. Which also indicates the Goan society slowly-slowly starting to accept the community. ( and this made me to make this Part II) Bearing in mind, it was a tiatr competition, nearly half the applause must have come from its own supporters (St. Cruz) like in every tiatr. I would put the whole as 'mixed response'. Aplon's role was challenging, I suppose, no other actress would take up this tough role. She deserved an award for her role but strangely she did not figure in the winning lists. She was looking very beautiful & s**y too. Francis Xavier Gonsalves (as third husband-seen in the clip) got a prize though. It also reminded me of late Christopher Leitao (Chris-meena fame), who once dressed as a girl and attended a carnival dance. Many boys were seen making bee line to have a pleasure of dance with her ( not knowing she was a male). Christopher used to play female role in the tiatr and his most popular role was as 'Meera' and I think this was in late 70s. [Goanet] Goa's airport plan in trouble
Goa's airport plan in trouble 22 Oct 2007, 0008 hrs IST,Saurabh Sinha,TNN NEW DELHI: Goa may be one of the biggest tourist spots in India but it can't have two operational airports and find their operations viable. Following a long debate over the proposed new airport in the north at Mopa and the existing one at Dabholim, the state had recently asked the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) to examine if these two could be used together. Now the Montreal-based global agency has submitted its report to the state, clearly saying that this will not be financially viable. ''Currently Dabholim handles 2.2 passengers annually. According to ICAO estimates, this figure will rise to 4 million and 6 million by 2014 and 2022, respectively. A totally private airport will require a threshold limit of 12 million departing passengers and 24 million total traffic,'' says the report. So even with a high traffic growth projection, the $325-million Mopa airport may not be financially viable if it is fully funded by a private player. http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/articleshow/2479422.cms

Re: [Goanet] Goan Origin - KONKANI or CAN KANI ??
Yes you are both correct in your assumptions in what you say, Konkani is a language & merits the status the Indian Goverment has said it is an OFFICIAL language of India. It must NOT be lost to the ever-increasing popularity for speaking English or Hindi (of its various forms, all also officially recognised & eons older than Konkani), but this reminds me of the Mauritian Creole, which is not only a spoken language but a written one also. There are many forms of Creole throughout the world, the Mauritian Creole is different to its neighbours, Reunion. Its also totally different to the Seychelles Creole language. Creole, or a "patwa" / "patois" of the American South is also different, some differences within (some are major differences in the "West Indies" also if affected or effected by the "Colonialists" own language, be it English, Portuguese, Spanish, Dutch, French etc. Originally devised, or developed so that the "masters" were unable to understand the slaves or bonded labourers, the Mauritian Creole developed from the French influence. But as all languages, eventually if not used, some die out in due course, taken over by the major languages, presently English being the most widely used, but closely followed by Spanish speaking, Chinese, French & of course many dozens of others of which will continue to thrive, as long as English, Spanish & French etc are not forced (as in African countries and smaller islands such as Mauritius) who are "proud" to be associated with England AND France but Creole is spoken in the home, some families now preferring to speak French in their houses, have set aside grandma & grandad's language to speak only French in front of them and outside the home also. So what is the origin of Konkani, was it developed or evolved so that the Portuguese "masters" were kept in the dark when Goans wanted to communicate with each other, ensuring secrecy in their communications? Let us hope that Goans continue the tradition of speaking Konkani in their homes AND on the streets, otherwise the next generation will be so engrossed in alll things USA / European that English may well take over in less than half a century's time. Its been estimated that in the USA the population of Spanish speakers have tripled in the last decade. In the next half century, the majority of the population will be Spanish speakers, and a major turn-about in politics will follow But of course figures are figures and they are manipulated to suit the person who is espousing. LONG LIVE KONKANI... I wish I had been able to continue with my konkani aged 11, but like the Portuguese I learned, it was not used in the UK at the time we arrived (no Goans & no Portuguese influences, much to my mother's delight no doubt), so it was totally wiped from my mind. One of my regrets also! But it snot too late for the next generation of Goans, as long as everyone who speaks and writes it, ensures it is used to the max! [Goanet] Goa And Portugal: Bonded Through Football
Goa And Portugal: Bonded Through Football Sport and politics should not mix, but despite what everyone says, the history & politics is what makes Real Madrid - Barcelona or USA -Iran or for that matter, India - Pakistan, such a thrill to watch. By this logic, Indians should look with disdain at the English football team, the country being their former ruler. But on the contrary, next to Brazil, arguably England is the best supported football team in India. A major reason for this is the immense exposure and popularity of the English Premier League in India. On a similar scale is Goa's bonding with Portugal. Goa is one of India's smallest states, more renowned for its natural beauty and as a world famous tourist destination, but it has been among the top two or three in terms of its achievements on the football field in India. The passion and emotion that Goans feel for their 'national' sport, football, is well known. Football is the undoubtedly the most popular sport in Goa and is embedded in Goan culture. The history of the game dates back to 1883 when the sport was introduced here by an English priest, before it became the State's sporting obsession. Goa Football Association, which currently administers the game in the state, was originally formed in December 1959 under the name Associacao Futebol de Goa. Along with West Bengal and Kerala, Goa is one of the football powerhouses of the country and home to teams such as Salgaocar, Dempo, Churchill Brothers, Vasco Sports Club and Sporting Clube de Goa. The recent press announcement that Dempo football club had tied up with Portugal's league champions FC Porto for an exchange programme came as no surprise. Now coaches and players from the club will go to Portugal and train with the experts there and vice-versa. The Portuguese ruled Goa for over 400 years. It was a Portuguese colony from the early 16th century after Vasco-da-Gama rounded the Cape of Good Hope to discover the sea route to India in 1498. Portuguese rule ended in 1961 when the Indian army entered this tiny coastal enclave with miles of beautiful beaches and drove the Portuguese away. But the state still has a distinct Portuguese flavour. Portuguese football jerseys always fly off the shelf whenever there is a World Cup or a Euro championships going on. Pubs and bars throughout the state make arrangements to broadcast the games on giant screens and while at the same time, pints of beer and Feni, the local cashew drink, are gulped down. You can argue that, nowadays, this is the scene everywhere in India, but in Goa, one can really sense that the feelings come from deep within. One had to be here in person to actually see the mania that had gripped the state when Portugal reached the final of Euro 2004. The majority of the Goan fans were rooting for their former colonial rulers. Portuguese flags could be seen everywhere. Young and old coloured faces with the Portuguese colours. It was really a matter of the heart for Goa. So much so that even the town church in the capital, Panjim, had joined the euphoria by having a special prayer for Portugal after the Sunday Mass. Believe it or not! Many of the football clubs in Goa still retain their Portuguese flavoured names like Vasco Sports Club, Sporting Clube de Goa, Fransa Pax football Club (now disbanded) etc. You can also see that other Portuguese names are still prevalent in the state on roads, buildings, surnames. Another reason for this affection can be traced to the fact that, after the Portuguese rule ended in 1961; some people emigrated from Goa to Portugal. In fact, as per the Portuguese Nationality Law, even if one was only born yesterday, but had a grandfather or grandmother who was born in Portuguese India before 1961, this person can apply for Portuguese nationality. So there are people who still have relatives spread across both the countries. One can safely say that over the last decade or so, the hatred and ill feelings towards a colonial ruler, have given way to a heartfelt love, at least as far as football is concerned. Sport has a tendency to unite people and whatever bitter feelings Goans had about the colonial rule, all seem to have been bridged by football. Goa might have won its freedom from the Portuguese about 46 years ago, but Portugal and its football team still rules the hearts of many people in this coastal paradise of India. If some of you have not seen or experienced this amazing bond between Portugal and Goa, then here is a good reason to book your tickets to Goa in advance, as Euro 2008 is less than a year away. Re: [Goanet] Hague Apostille {IMPORTANT}
Hello Paulo, My responses are quoted below. Yes, the apostille certifies the signature of officer issuing the Apostille. However there is no reply from the CRC-Lisboa as to the acceptance of documents bearing apostille from india which only implies their denial, but simply do not want to give in writing as it may lead them in to trouble. (Breach of Article 3 Of Apostille Convention) Also, i came to know from one of the lawyer in lisboa who had approached to CRC, that the documents meant for filing portuguese nationality from india bearing Hague apostille will not be accepted. However no Written statement had been issued from CRC. Let me mention clearly and we are all aware that one can obtain portuguese nationality by either filing the concerned papers at Portuguese consulate or getting the same papers attested from portuguese consulate- GOA and submit at CRC-Lisboa under POA in favour of a professsional lawyer. Now for both the cases, an appointment to portuguese consulate has to be made which takes several months (As evident from the website). Therefore if one can afford to hire a lawyer then why not get hague apostille on all the documents and send it to CRC and initiate the process. Why should one be a victim of any such lethargious practices & delays for obtaining appointments being adopted by portuguese consulate and which is completely ridiculous. As far as follow-up service with local authorities for geniuneness and verification goes, let me make it clear that the portuguese consulate is definitley going to follow their own procedure for checking the accuracy of documents irrespective of the fact whether those being either received from CRC or submitted directly to them. Hence it makes no sense whether the documents are attested by portuguese consulate and submitted at CRC or documents bearing hague apostille are submiited to CRC or documents submiited directly at Portuguese consulate. The Verification and checking is all same in all the 3 cases. According to me the only benefit from Hague apostille is that one do not have to make any appointments for nationality or attestations from portuguese consulate and can directly submit to CRC by the consent of professional lawyer and get his/her process started. However the CRC-Lisboa has been not been confirming from their side for acceptance of documents bearing hague apostille from india. Regards; Shashikant. Message: 11 Date: Fri, 19 Oct 2007 13:32:22 +0100 From: "Paulo Colaco Dias" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: Re: [Goanet] Hague Apostille {IMPORTANT}. To: "'Goa's premiere mailing list, estb. 1994!'" Message-ID: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Shashikant, If both Portugal and India are signatories to the Convention of 5 October 1961 Abolishing the Requirement of Legalisation for Foreign Public Documents, I see no reason why Portugal would not accept a document from India containing the Apostille. But I think people fail to understand what the Apostille actually certifies. The Apostille certifies the signature of the officer that issued the document, not the content of the document. If there are doubts about the content of the document, the fact that it contains the Apostille is not going to make anything easier or faster. It might be a bit cheaper though. The work of the Portuguese consulates in India is not only of recognition of signatures from Indian authorities but also the follow up service with the local authorities to verify if those documents were really issued by them. This is what takes long. The certification of documents does not take long. As you must know, the docs submitted through the Portuguese consulate in Goa are sent via diplomatic mail to the CRC in Lisbon in order to start the process and then sent back to the Portuguese consulate in Goa so that the Portuguese consulate can check with the local Indian authorities (office of births, deaths, marriages, etc) if those documents were really issued by them. This is to avoid fraud, which unfortunately is common in India. And that is where the documents then get stuck and the delays occur. They get stuck in the local Indian Registries. Many times the local Indian authorities do not bother to respond (because they do not have the time and also because they do not think they should spend on post to reply and other times also because they are jealous of the applicants...). Applicants then have to follow up with the local authorities and many times pay them to actually process the requests of confirmation from the Portuguese consulate. This is the reality that not many people know about! Best regards Paulo Colaco Dias
[Goanet] Dussehra... the Goan way
Dussehra... the Goan way By Rohit Phalgaonkar The talukas of Goa are treasure troves of cultural and heritage. They interest archaeologists, anthropologists, heritage lovers and historians. The festivals too have their own identity and significance in Goa. Be it the "Tavshaache Fest of Santan" or the "Shigmo" of Sarvan Bicholim each festival is a milestone on Goa's soil. The Dussehra of Goa is commonly known as "Dasro" in Konkani. It is celebrated on the 10th day following the Nine Nights festival. The "Dashmi" or the "Dasam" in Konkani is marked on the Hindu calendar for the celebrations of this festival. It is a grand event in every Goan temple. There is an ambience of purity and divinity everywhere in the air as the temples are illuminated and the deities are adorned and embellished to look celestial. In many temples, the day begins with religious rites early in the morning. In the evening, a procession of the deity seated in a "Paalkhi" is taken out. The "Simolanghan" or crossing of the borders of the temple precincts is also carried out. Various symbolic representations of the deities are taken out in this procession. The "Taranga", "Satreo", etc. are decorated marvelously. The Dussehra of the Shri Kamakshi temple in Shiroda is usually celebrated the next day after the Dussehra celebrations of other places. On the previous day, a procession called the "Ghodo" is taken out. "Ghodo" connotes a horse in Konkani. A golden image of Shri Raayeshwar is mounted on a silver horse. The procession is accompanied by traditional music. The Dussehra of the Pernem Taluka too is quiet well known all over Goa as "Pednecho Dasro". The musical instruments like the huge Dhols, Taaso, cymbals and Shehnai have formed an integral part of this festival. No Navratri is complete without these traditional Goan instruments. The pulsating and lively music of these instruments is very much warlike. The real Goan culture is well reflected during the Dasro. But due to creeping in of the western influence, these festivals are given a modern look. Dhotis are no longer seen worn by men who carry the Paalkhi or the Taranga. Western percussions are replacing the traditional ones on a large scale. We cannot allow the vibrant Goan flavour of these festivals to disappear. After all, Goa has its own unique cultural identity which we have to maintain. (ENDS) Goa Plus - October 19, 2007
[Goanet] 3 Goans in the top 10
Three Goans finished in the top 10 to create history in the National Under 9 Chess Championships which concluded at Bangalore. Mohanan Harikrishnan (ELO 1730) was the pick of the lot. He finished fourth in the Boys' section after beating M. Karthikeyan of Tamil Nadu. Harikrishnan will consider himself unlucky not to finish in the top 3 as he had a brilliant tournament and won accolades from one and all for his sterling display. World Under 8 Girls Champion Ivana Furtado finished 5th after beating statemate Gauri Hadkonkar in the last round. Ivana has one more year in the Under 9 section and we expect her to finish much higher in the next year's edition of this same tournament. Re: [Goanet] Goa bishop in San Francisco - A reply to Joaquim Pereira
Fr Pereira, I noticed that you rushed to reply to Albert's concerns and to clarify a point made by Ariosto on the trivial subject of your Bishop's trip to Frisco. On the other hand you have consistently ignored Cornel D'Costa's questions about the role played by the clergy in Goa's caste system. I think from the tone of his questions, that Cornel too is "hurt about a few things". In fact I too have always been curious about this very question. I know nothing about the history and backgound of the practices of the Church in Goa as they relate to the caste system then. All I have observed in my youth was the discrimination, some silent some not so silent emanating from the mostly Brahmin clergy of that time. From family experience, I can attest to that first-hand though it was spoke mainly in hushed tones. Now, I know that you are not responsible for the history of the Catholic religious hierarchy in Goa, but don't you think that if there have been deep malpractices that obtained at one period, the Church in Goa must stand up and admit those wrongs. A lot of people were hurt by the caste system in Goa. They were hurt enough in their personal social and economic life by such practices. But to have the Church also indulge in them must have broken their backs. Time to describe it, admit it and move on dear Joaquim. Those who were hurt or even those who were not would like to see a certain closure. A mea culpa of the kind that your flock are called to make at the confessional as often as possible. Or else it will be nothing more than the sweeping away of another chapter not unlike the ongoing sexual molestation saga relating to which the higher ups of the Church have made a humongous boo-boo that essentially negated all the goodwill the church has built up with all the creditable work it has ever done. There too the problem was not the evil doings of a minuscule part of the clergy, but the protection of the perpetrators. Roland. Rico, Dona Berta Monteiro Pereira, Helen Sardinha´s mother, used to teach delicious culinary creations, at their residential mansion behind Holy Spirit Church, Margao; had picked it up from her late mother, Dona Etelvina dos Peres Monteiro, of Loutulim, an all-time master chef. Cooking used to be her compulsive passion. Remembering her suckling piglet, doce de camarao & numberless other exquisite delicacies is, indeed, a very cruel punishment. If Berta still carries on I cannot say. She is a few years elder to me and I am pusing 63. Our co-netter, Anton Monteiro, her brother in Torronto, will be able to inform us. Pls post a reply, Tony. [Goanet] Hi Ervell relating to The Ugly Goan
Hi Ervell, I really do not know You. I don't know ur age or where u come from(your roots) but I totally agree with what u wrote about this bad side of us goans. Earlier I felt it running in my mind against all the usuall hyped ideas that we r sweet in nature, friendly warm hearted. But with time I know what a true Goan is and I keep telling friends what the reality is. True a Goan likes to pull another Goan down. Few examples... I know a very few Goans(shippees and gulfees) whom I would always keep in touch asking to try for me for a job abroad. Always I got promises. Even my close relatives let me down when it came to really practising what they promised. Infact this bad habit runs in schools where there is groupism and u will always find a nature of hurting, selfishness even in the jokes they crack in their peers. Perhaps we really do not have good ethical behaviour of giving respect. Perhaps mom and dad is busy making money as they value money above good values. Infact we need to learn a lot from the rest of Indians. Also You written well about this ill nature of gossiping. This brings fear in the spciety as u always have to take others approval/consent. This kills our true spirit and freedom of speech curbed. Another issue is that we see from what meets the eye but forget to look at problem from a distance. We think we have captured the world with our little money infact not realising that the there are more wealthier people elsewhere and we better shut our boasting mouth up. Well would be looking forward to hear more from what u write. Caetano, Citibank-Dubai
[Goanet] Bobby Jindal elected Governor of the State of Louisiana
Republican Bobby Jindal has been elected the Louisiana governor after beating 11 rivals to be the first politician of South Asian (Indian) origin and the country's youngest to become the governor of an American state. The Oxford-educated dashing politician will be America's youngest governor when he takes charge in January 2008. No one has won a governor primary outright until now in Louisiana. "My mom and dad came to this country in pursuit of the American dream," a visibly pleased Jindal told his cheering supporters. "And guess what happened. They found the dream to be alive and well right here in Louisiana." "Let's give our homeland.a fresh start," he added, with his wife Supriya Jolly by his side, carrying the youngeest of three children. "The American dream is alive and kicking!" The victoruy is significant because Louisiana is not home to a large Indian-American population unlike some other major swtates. And yet Jindal won, banking on his reputation as one who fixed up the state's healthcare system and as a fighter against corruption. The victory also led to celebrations in his parents' ancestral village in faraway Punjab where Gulshan Jindal,m a cousin, said "We are really proud that Bobby has won the governor'ws race. He has made us all happy and proud." Credit to: Hindustan Times, Sunday Oct. 21, 2007

[Goanet] 43 year old held for molesting minor in Bicholim
-- Samir Umarye BICHOLIM OCT 21: A 43 year old parent from Vathadev was today arrested by the Bicholim police in connection with molestation of a nine year old girl from a school. According to the available information the incident occurred on Tuesday at about 7.30 am near the school premises of Our Lady of Grace High School. One Subhani Desai (43) from Vathadev Bicholim had gone to drop his girl to school. After dropping her he waited near the school passage going towards the girls toilet. Soon he saw a girl from standard Vth coming in the direction of the toilet. When the girl reached the toilet, seeing no one around the accused fondled with her . Stunned with the incident the girl narrated the entire incident to her parents in the evening who in turn contacted the Headmistress, Coutin Dias. As the girl was unable to identify the molester the school parents decided to keep a vigil near the school. Today in the morning the girl happened to see the molester who had come to drop his own girl to the school. The people around caught hold of the accused and thrashed him black and blue. When the molester came to know that there is no escape from the mob he rescued himself and ran to the Bicholim police station. Based upon a formal complaint already registered by the Headmistress the Bicholim police arrested the molester under section 354 IPC and section 8 (1) of the Goa Children's Act. He was later remanded to two days police custody. PSI, Tukaram Walke is further investigating the case under the guidance of PI, Braz Menezes.
[Goanet] THE PRINTED WORD: Learn Konkani, the Romi way
Learn Konkani, the Romi way THE PRINTED WORD Twenty years later, the debate over language in Goa has come a full circle. In 1987, it was Marathi-versus-Konkani. Now, it is a battle over the scripts and dialects within Konkani. FREDERICK NORONHA looks at how this divide ended up in print. Language is an emotive issue, no doubt. We in Goa haven't been able to yet show that maturity to adopt a live-and-let-live approach over our linguistic differences. In such a context, it's not surprising to see a new book on the stands recently, called 'Romi Lipient Konknni Kors' (Konknni Course in Roman Script). It is authored by Dr Mathew Almeida sj (Thomas Stephens Konknni Kendr, Porvorim, 2007, Pp 252, Rs 250, US$20, UKP10). At one level, some will see this as an extension of the script-based battle within Konkani. At another level, one could argue that the Devanagari-alone approach was rather untenable, and it was bound to get unstuck sooner or later. Seen from the positive side, this "kors" should make it easier for those wanting to study Konkani, without needing to learn a new script first. In particular, this fairly ambitious book will help expat Goans, foreigners wanting to study the language, or even new settlers to the state (not all of whom would know Devanagari). This book is made up of 33 chapters in its main part (Section II), and another four chapters offering Konkani basics. Towards the end are Konkani-English and English-Konkani vocabularies, references, an appendix and acknowledgements. Probably in a bid to stave off the charge that the Roman script is not "phonetic", the start of the book contains an elaborate explanation on how to accurately pronounce different Konkani words in this script. Each lesson is short, of about two to four pages in length. But it's packed with a great deal of useful information -- a Konkani text with a vocabulary in English, grammar notes (in English), response drill and some questions and text. What's welcome is the use of English in this book, which is used where needed to teach Konkani. Some language purists have made the task of spreading Konkani all that more difficult by not even including any words of explanation in, say, a fourth standard Konkani school text book! Leaving one to just keep guessing, or give up. In a way, the book reflects Goa's diversity better, unlike some Devanagari texts which tend to be more Antruzi-focussed. Whether TSKK can make this title sell is left to be seen. On the negative side, this book deserves a better cover. Incidentally, this book was brought out by Mangalorean priest Dr Matthew Almeida sj, and TSKK is itself headed by another Jesuit from that region, Dr Pratap Naik. Which only goes to show that the full debate about so-called 'outsiders' is more complex than made out to be. One day someone might be grateful to these two men from having the humility to retrace their steps, and save a Konkani dialect from total submergence into the sea of standardisation and linguistic hegemony. This book is available from TSKK, B. B. Borkar Road, Alto Porvorim, Goa 403 521. Ph: 2415857, 2415864 Fax: 91-832-2413389 Email: [EMAIL PROTECTED] website:www.tskk.org It should be on the book-stands shortly. GOAN GAMES 'Goyantlem Parampareek Khel' is a book about Goa's traditional games. Edited by Bhushan Bhave, this has been published by the Goa Konkani Akademi (243, Pato Colony, Panjim) and is priced at Rs 140 in March 2005. Written in Konkani, it's a useful book, though one would suspect that there would be a need for such a title in English too. It is 152 pages, and in larger-than-usual format. In the text, Bhave breaks up the games into two segments -- traditional ones ('paramparik') and those linked to history or religion. The latter category finds inclusions like godgodo, goff, zagor, dhalo, dhirio, coconut-breaking, fuggdi, shigmo, and Sao Joao. Is that a suitable description? Given the amount of taxpayers' resources the GKA spends in publishing so many Konkani books, it would make good sense if these books could be better distributed. The low-price, no-distributor-margins policy (or insufficient margins, as against market trends) probably only makes books published by the Goa Konkani Akademi less-than-visible on the stands. Of course, the back cover of this text includes an invite to visit the GKA's reading centre and book sale centre. But this is surely not enough SLICK BOOK 'HIV/AIDS in Goa: Situation and Response 2005-06' is one of those slick and well-published book, printed on glossy paper, and highlights the great role our politicians and State is playing on improving the situation on this front. Which makes one wonder: Is there simply too much money in battling AIDS? Why don't health concerns really crying for concern -- like malaria, anemia among Goan women, TB or the shortage of cancer or heart treatment facilities in Goa -- really get highlighted in the first place? Sixty-three pages, this has been published by t
[Goanet] Fundamentalist revival in Goa?
Is Goa experiencing some kind of a fundamentalist revival? Just sent away two Jehovah's Witnesses (Watchtower) who came over unsolicited (on a Sunday evening, when I was all bleary-eyed after a long siesta), and are going round house-to-house "sharing the Good News". Despite repeated statements that I was not in the market for good news, they just wouldn't go, and I practically had to force them out. Just a few days ago I had to send away two Believers who insisted on telling my wife about the Word of the Lord or some such and how it would save her from the hell-fire that surely awaited me otherwise. She called out to me to come and rescue her. Again it took some doing to get them to go away. All these people are most welcome to believe whatever they want, but must they insist on coming and telling us about it in gruesome detail, even after being told categorically that we are not interested? Reason I was wondering about a possible fundamentalist revival was because two in a week seemed excessive. Also, another pair had landed up a month ago. Prior to that, in a ten-year period we had had only three such pairs. Have they decided that the Apocalypse is round the corner, given that they're crawling out of the woodwork in such large numbers? But a quick survey of stuff on Jehovah's Witnesses shows that for them the Apocalypse has always been round the corner, so what's so different now, that's making them so active? I'm checking the climate charts, maybe things are going to hell even faster than we thought :-) -- Question everything -- Karl Marx

Re: [Goanet] Betrayal of Koankanni over the years
Cedrico wrote: Actually now is the time to ask both the candidates Wilfred Misquita n Sardinha as to what they would do to ensure the survival and promotion of the koankanni language specially in sashtiwhich played the major role in getting koankanni the official language status. -- Just after the official language act was passed I was visiting Goa. On a trip from Margoa to Vasco, I was given a ride by Dr. Misquitta and a freedom fighter, whose name I forget. I asked the good old doctor why he as an MGP member did not voice his support for Konkani in Romi script instead of only Devnagiri script along with Marathi as the official language. HIs reply was that Catholic Goans could choke Marathi and give no importance to Konkani in devnagiri script. It was perhaps an escapist route, just as he is doing with regard to the Dabolim vs Mopa airport issue. Obviously, as an MGP member (maybe he was on the party's executive), he did not want to go against the party line. It only shows that politicians dance to party tunes even though in their hearts they don't agree with the policies. That Dr. Misquitta has joined the BJP just to get the parliamentary ticket is obvious. In fact, I and Wilson Mazarello (Wilmix) discussed the issue during his stay in Dubai. I said to him that the demand for Konkani in Romi Lipi should have been tagged along with the demand for Konkani as an official language during the agitation. It is bit late in the day but, nevertheless, the fight that has begun must be carried on. One is never sure when victory will come, as as it happened in getting official recognition to Konkani. True, politicians such as Churchill, Luzinho and Francisco should have rushed the amendment through the legislature during their brief stints as chief ministers. Having given an award for a Romi Konkani book, it seems strange that the Kala Academy has gone back to its earlier stance of giving awards only to Devnagiri Konkani. But the Kala Academy has been a bastion of pro-Marathi or pro-Devnagiri supporters. Wasn't is surprising that Parrikar made Rane, an Opposition leader, the chairperson of the august cultural body during his time as chief minister. Eugene __ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo! Archbishop Henry D'Souza of Kolkata had in November 2005 donated his ancestral home in Demello Vaddo Saligao, to be used as a temporary home for women in distress and the place has been renovated and extended to comfortably house about 10 inmates at a time. The thrift shop is open every Thursday and Saturday from 4 to 6 pm. Items for sale include clothes, bags, cosmetics household items, curios etc. all of which have been donated by villagers and well-wishers. The Asro Committe of the SSVP ,put in alot of effort to sort, label and arrange the items which were well displayed and it is heartening to see the large number of people visiting the shop and buying items of their choice at bargain prices. The committee has requested more donors to come forward and keep the shop going. ENDS

On the other hand such people must not be handed over to the Police cause they are too lenient, the public must first take against such people and then give the police a lame victim with broken bones. [Goanet] KALA ACADEMY AND INJUSTICE TO ROMI WRITERS
To The Editor, Dear Sir, KALA ACADEMY AND INJUSTICE TO ROMI WRITERS Theres no doubt that the Konkani Roman script, which has scripted pages of gold in the checkered history of Konkani in Goa, has been receiving time and again step-motherly treatment from a group of staunch Devanagiri script supporters. That the Goa Kala Academy too is now abdicating its role to give the much-needed impetus to Romi writers is a matter of shame. All the more so, in view of the repeated statements made by our CM that all possible help, in every way, will be extended to the Roman script. On April, 18 2006, at the meeting of the Executive Board of the KA, it was suggested that, like the decision of having a separate category for Roman Konkani Sahitya Puraskar, an independent scheme ought to be prepared for Gomant Sharda Puraskar for Roman Konkani, Devanagiri Konkani and Marathi. As a policy matter, the Executive unanimously approved the suggestion and directed the Member Secretary to prepare separate schemes and make necessary budgetary provisions. When the matter came up for ratification by the General Council (of which I am also a member) on 12th. of this month, Mr. Uday Bhembre vehemently opposed the move by making points in favour of his stand. Mr. Tomazinho Cardoso, together with others, put counter-arguments, fervently appealing for separate schemes, all the more so, in view of the prevailing ground realities today. Tomazinho did make a strong case to my mind and therefore I am dismayed to read in the press that the KA has closed door on Romi script writers. Today thousands of Romi writers, readers and lovers nurture our beautiful Konkani language with love and tender care almost single-handedly. And this has become possible only because of the invaluable support and generous personal financial help of umpteen devoted people. Romi script writers have a reason to be aggrieved once more. Let me state, at this juncture, that I am all for dialogue and bridges between the lipi factions. I am not in favour of any amendment to the Official Language Bill at this point of time (because it will give leeway to even more fissiparous tendencies). But I make a strong appeal to those at the helm of the KA that this prestigious body should not abdicate its responsibility as far as promotion and recognition of Romi Konkani script is concerned. The world will not come to an end if the decisions adopted by the executive board are implemented without delay. To be sure Konkani language will be enriched thousandfold - even as it is given a new aroma and a fresh touch of fragrance. Long live amchi maim bas! Tanking you, Dr. Francisco Colaco, MD 151 G.
