[Goanet] Seminar in Konkani at Zuarinagar

Seminar in Konkani at Zuarinagar

VASCO, FEB 18 - The department of Konkani at MES College of Arts and
Commerce, Zuarinagar, in association with Goa Konkani Academy will organize
a state-level seminar in Konkani on 'Konkani Sahitya, Sanskrutai Ani Samaj'
on February 21 in the college premises from 9 am to 5 pm.Noted Konkani
writers, educationists, teachers and stage artistes will present papers on
the seminar subjects - short story, novel, drama, tiatr, mando and folklore.

http://www.oheraldo.in/pagedetails.asp?nid=8815&cid=26

.
Dears,

It is nice to note the revival of interest in Konkani. Fr.Agnelo's
College, Pilar organised a similar meet too. The script is of little
concern to me as long as the youth are getting familiar with the
language in a way they understand. One can switch scripts at any time.
Exposure to a language and culture must come at a younger age.

Unfortunately, the mix of untrained, non-Konkani reading teachers
teaching Konkani in Devanagri to an increasingly Lamani and Bijapuri
student population in the Diocesan schools, is not the best way of
going about the job. Most Govt. primary schools do not teach
the"Official Language". After 15 years of Konkani in schools, the
circulation of the only Devanagri Konkani newspaper in Goa is not
increasing as it should have.

Literacy is not equal to readership. Even applictions or petitions are
not received by Govt. offices in Konkani written in Devanagri. The
teaching of the Official language has been as effective as the
teaching of French, Latin or Sanskrit in school. The post of "Director
of Official Language" is considered as a punishment now.

May be one day we will have our own Konkani Nirantari in Goa. At least
the process can begin.

Mog asundi.

[Goanet] Good news for english newspaper readership (Part 2)

2008-02-20 Thread cajetan vaz
Hi All, Post my Good news for english newspaper readership (Part 1)
a few days before FN's "Open letter to the Times of India",there has been an
amusing exchange of reactions.
It's great to understand the impact that TOI's pre-launch activity hasalready
created. There are assumptions, fears, expectations, envy...and a whole lot
ofemotional outbursts pouring.
Fact remains, things will change. And with change, a new order will emerge. It
will mark a pre-TOI and post-TOI period in the english newspaperspace in Goa.
The positives will, in my opinion far outweigh the negatives.Healthy
competition is always welcome, and it invariably benefits theend consumer.
So what if salaries of journos sky-rocket?So also will job insecurity.Let the
best survive and flourish.
TOI won't rest with it's english edition.Maharashtra Times (MT) will be next in
line to take on Gomantak andTarun Bharat.
Why the 'holier-than-thou' resistance to TOI's predatory pricing?Didn't GT do
it @ Rs 1/- ?Didn't Herald dump free copies for months in Porvorim Defence
Colony?
In the end readers will be loyal to brands (free or paid) that appealsto their
set of values. And brands that understand that will survive.
TOI gives readers what they want, very much like TRP hungryentertainment/news
(infotainment) tv channels.Leading perhaps to a degeneration of journalistic
values.
One can expect very high levels of local event adoption and coverage.Goa Plus
will I'm sure mutate into Panjim Times, Margao Times, VascoTimes, Mapusa Times,
Calangute Times...All split run editions with 'print-to-order' editorial and
advertisingcontent.
The battle between Editorial and Marketing as it evolves in thenewspaper
industry will continue to take different forms right here inGoa.
Paid editorials. Paid Page 3 coverage. Advertorials. Responsesupplements.
Complementary multi-media plugs. Blanking out ofcompetitive commercial
news/eventsWhat's new?Watch this space!
Cajetan Vaz20 Feb 2008
P.S. Am looking forward to the advertising campaign that my batchmateJWT's
Agnello Dias will perhaps create for TOI's Goa launch. He is aGoan and TOI
specialist. His recent film for Nike (with a Lornasoundtrack) won him
international acclaim at Cannes recently.

2008-02-20 Thread Bonefacio Lopes
Babush should realize the observance of Lent Season, and i hope and pray he and
his family clearly understands the significance of Lent, otherwise being a
catholic he would not have behaved , i again pray fervently that the Taleigao
and Panjim Church elders need to pray for Babush , make him understand so that
he believes God exists and the Money Power or Muscle Power where he is riding
on high can be done away with by the creator , there have been stories million
of them where a massive and tragic incident can change a stone hearted person
to a better human being.

Whatever bad deeds Babush has been doing the innocent are bound to suffer and
he should realise that he has a family too behind him just like innocent people
at Panjim Police station.

Time for reconciliation.

The one time beautiful state of Goa lost her natural beauty at a very rapid
pace. For some of our elected representatives, cutting the hills and use the same
mud to fill the agricultural lands inorder to have by-pass roads is a
development and for some, having five-star restaurants on the beach, conversion
of green fields into huge cemented structures and then displaying 'keep Goa
Green' sign boards is a development and this proves how talented our elected
representatives are.

Just prior to the last assembly elections,a party called Safe Goa Front was
formed to save Goa from the hands of the Corrupt Congress but recently the
party got miserably raped and then murdered during daylight That proves
what? One of our beloved ministers is very keen on the six-lane highway,he wants
to complete the project at the earliest,I wish him all the best but I want to
bring at his notice that the single lane highway passing through Bondorim to
Navelim is in a very bad shape since more than a year now.Our concerned
authorities cannot maintian the present single lane highway and maintaining a
six-lane Highway is a million dollar question.

Goa was and is known for land sharks,Riversharks and now Goa is in the news
for selling Offical Legal documents illegally for lakhs of Rupees. We the niz
goenkars have to run from the pillar to post to prove our place of residence
whereas people like Manyata gets the same even without appearing before the
concerned authorities. There are rumors in Cuncolim that the Chief Officer
attached to the Cuncolim Municipal Council was pressurised by the top political
leaders to issue the Residential Certificate but the God fearing Chief Officer,
Agnelo was saved by his God.

Last but not the least, the recent incident wherein the Panjim Police station
was stoned by Babush's supporters and in return how the Panjim Police reacted
by manhandling Babush's wife, smashing Babush's car proves the efficiency of Goa
Police. Our Police Officers, most of them bought the jobs by paying lakhs of
rupees couldn't handle such a simple situation involving the local people so
how one can trust such Police as far as terrorism is concerned.

The knee jerk reaction from the police wherein they
also indulged in violence reflects a complete breakdown
of law and order. Why did they not just arrest the

Apart from the usual stereotyped press statement
from the chief secretary , the administration was
silent on the issue. Let alone making their presence
felt at the incident site , the chief minister and the
home minister were simply " unavalaible for comment ".
The term eunuch is the only appropriate one I can
think of at the moment to describe the top brass

2008-02-20 Thread Miguel Braganza
Dear Dr. Anand,

The Goanet is an open forum. You are entitled to your views ...and to
persisit with them, irrespective of whether they are right or not. It
is not my concern. I will only respond to such points as I deem fit.
Like it or lump it, it is the Goanet Admin that decides, not You and
not I.

I wrote: "Vinay used the word FASCIST to describe the Congress. It
is definitely malaprop ;-)" If you disagree, post your rebuttal, or
hold your peace. I do not know if Vinay has appointed you as his
advocate. There has been no mention to this effect.

When I wrote, "I am NOT about to debate GBA with you. Come to Goa, settle
down here and then talk politics." I was speaking for myself. YOU
can go ahead and discuss the issues with whoever is willing to discuss
it with you on Goanet or otherwise. You will recall that you have
used a lot of my time in telephonic discussions , too. Why are you
trying to create an NRI constituency against me on Goanet? I have no
problems with NRIs discussing Goan politics as long as they, unlike
you, do not expect ME to remain engaged in discussing it with them.

Forget about trying to brow beat me on Goanet. Stronger persons have
tried and failed. I have been around for half a dozen years ...and
even made a very unpopular statement [then] about "Charter tourism"
being a drain on our economy and a strain on our infrastructure. This
point is now well accepted even in tourism circles. I am NOT standing
for elections and so popularity is not an issue with me. Truth is.

Mog asundi.

   Dear Miguel-bab,

My sincere apologies for approaching you again to seek enlightenment.
I am , however , compelled to do so as in spite of repeated perusals
of your response , I fail to find the answers to the specific and fairly
reasonable queries I have raised . I append the questions again at the

I intend to persist in re-posting these questions ( and any others that

   i) Satisfactory answers are obtained.
ii) Your other commitments prevent you from continuing your valued

   It is definitely malaprop ;-)
AV says : That is your opinion . You are entitled to it and I respect

This is not , however , what you said to Mr V. Natekar in his your

MB says : You can have your relatives to apply RTI for the name,

just Rs.10/- We will discuss that later.
AV says : Thanks for the kind advice . Perhaps I have already obtained
the info I need from necessary sources. I have not , however, asked

AV says : I have not asked you to discuss GBA . I have requested you
to provide specific answers to specific questions. A simple yes or no
may well sufficeI raise STRONG objections to your comments
regarding my not being permitted to discuss politics on this forum
because I am not based in
Goa . I request you to either :
   i) Witdraw your comment forthwith and publicly on this forum.
   OR
ii ) Make an identically worded comment addressing every non resident
on this forum who is involved or has been involved in the past in

Mother, I love you
Mother, your are more than anything else to me.
Mother, I will always look after you.
Mother, I will always keep you happy.
mother, you are my best friend.
Mother, you are my Valentine ….

But once married the same often changed to..
Mother, you are a burden to us.
Mother, I love my wife more than anything else in this world
Mother, I will do anything to keep my wife happy (even If i have to...)
Mother, you better put up or shut up (with my wife).
Mother, why me, only me should look after you?
Mother, how dare you say something to my wife?
Mother, say sorry to my wife or else..
Mother, please leave this home (because my wife does not like you).

After marriage, are they ever going to say to their mothers.. ‘Mom, I am
grateful to you?’
This one does but for different reasons.

2008-02-20 Thread Miguel Braganza
Dear me,

Just this morning I learnt that Frederick bab and Dr.Anand-bab had a
"common friend" in a well known politician ;-)

Now Frederick bab is being invited to conducted a crash course on
"understanding agitations" in the Goan context. Next he will be
expected to explain his statements about GDA, Cloud 9 and other
attempts in getting the kodel.

'the tens of thousands who read Goanet" reminds me of the Iraq war
justification ..."sexing up" of the statistics. I know "one man" who
was good at it and can even give you the break up of the Rs.4.0 crores
spent on the security of a tribal in Goa.

There is a subtle threat if Fred does not comply
( and will forgive me if I persist in asking these questions till
reasonably better educated regarding the points above )
Obviously, oxford learning experience is not enough. Oxen are not the
smartest species either. and they can be truly "bull-headed"
Perhaps, Sandesh can organise "Dhirio" on the topic at the facilities
created by one and being used to now promote the other.

Or perhaps, someone will beard the lion in his den as the Panaji
police apparently did last night. There is just that much that you can
push a person around. Some people learn it only the hard way.

In the meanwhile, a happy learning experience on Goa net to all who
wanna be smart ...and get the "one man" in the CM's chair
...permanently. ;-)

Frederick-bab provided an excellent analysis of the physiology
of why Goans have been agitating starting from 1961.
He ended thus :

Nowadays, we are seeing some amount of protest being fuelled
by the ambitions of one-man (and his backers) to reclaim the
chief-ministership that he had claimed using a mix of treachery
and deliberately-fuelled ambitions.
Needless to say, the corruption-fuelled style of Congress politics
will also ensure that it runs into the brakes of protest and agitation
sooner or later. But it helps to understand what fuels the
agitations here.

My comments :

I am grateful to the author for his very precise summary of what
is undoubtedly a complex subject. It has certainly helped me to
understand what fuels agitations

I am sure that the author will understand that the less informed
like me ( and at least a percentage of the tens of thousands who

incomplete without these clarifications ( and will forgive me if I
persist in asking these questions till reasonably better educated

Dear Goanetters,

I agree with Dr.Anand. The events that took place yesterday were disgraceful
and disheartening. It is indeed sad that Goa is turning out like this.

And among all the politicians who were mum about the issue, I admire
Mr.Manohar Parrikar for speaking out publicly against the assailants. It is
disgraceful to see that the current administration was 'not available for
comment', on a day of such happenings. It is in bad taste. Another thing in
bad taste was Dr.Willy's comment about the police action. I wonder what he
expected the police to do in such a situation.

I agree with Dr.Anand that the current top-brass are eunuchs. Spineless.
Characterless.

This happening was a tragedy. A bigger tragedy is that the Aam Aadmi
government is silent about it.

Long live democracy.

And now (2008), ADC has broken his own record by producing a superb video on
DVD titled ‘GOA - Pearl of the Orient’

I like it so much that I immediately thought of passing it on to you (only
bought yesterday).

A 75+ minute DVD film covering almost every aspect of Goa’s tradition, culture,
Music, Festivals, Architectural heritage etc etc.

I am not very good at reviewing books/Films/ VCD/DVD etc so I have decided to
bring before you the scanned back-cover of the DVD which says it all.

Lifes greatest things come in small packages - Agnello A.S. Fernandes

2008-02-20 Thread Goa's Pride www.goa-world.com
  AGNELLO A.S. FERNANDES

-- by N.C.Mohandoss

“My progress and success have been a gradual process. The knowledge and wisdom
of experts and abundant blessings from above have made my road to success much
easier.. I don’t allow even the most difficult situations to frustrate me; but
I use these moments to show my empathy to my clients and try to please them. It
is challenging job and I like to take and overtake challengers” These are the
opening lines of Mr. Agnello A. S. Fernandes, the Assistant Vice President of
Fund Administration Department of Gulf Custody Company Kuwait. Born in a
small scenic village of Aquem Alto Margao Goa as the son of a sailor, Agnello
completed his secondary education at Guardian Angel High School Sanvordem, Goa
and later after his graduation came to Kuwait in 1975 in search of greener
pastures. He started his career with Jassim Mohd Al Ali Al Wazzan in their
indenting department as a junior clerk. After working there for 6 years, he
joined KFTCIC, the biggest investment company at that
time, in their Treasury back office.

He worked with them for 16 years and when the company finally merged with
Kuwait Investment Company in late 90’s he moved to National Investment Company
as settlement officer. He still remembers that April 2001 Sunday morning when
his former boss and a colleague Mr. Ahmed Mohd Al Bahar called him over the
phone and enquired whether he wished to join him at Gulf Custody Company which
was newly formed that month. Knowing the aptitude the person has for work and
appreciating the trust he put in him Agnello joined him as Senior Settlement
Officer and since then there was never looking back.

Thanks to his hard work, Agnello rose to the position of Assistant Vice
President in the same organization as of last year.
Gulf Custody Company are the biggest fund custodians in Gulf
Cooperation Council countries administrating more than 80 funds and have U.S.
Dollars 7 billion worth of assets under them. Major banks and investment
companies are share holders in this company. They also have a full flegged
branch office in Bahrain.

Just in the beginning of January 2008 “Money Markets Watch” a London based
survey organization has awarded Gulf Custody Company “Best-in-Class - Gulf
Markets” award for 2007 - and a five star rating based upon value added
services, which puts Gulf Custody Company at the top of the domestic table.
There are 70 employees working with us and most of them are from India. We work
as a family and success of our Company is at the top of our priority list” says
Agnello.
He further adds, “I am indebted to Mr. Ahmed Al Bahar The General Manager of
Gulf Custody Company for having given me the free hand to learn, try new ideas
and put my innovative plans to action and thank him for having faith in my
capabilities which in fact has inspired me to better my achievements”

He also dedicates his success to his wife Mrs. Neeta Fernandes currently
Executive Secretary with Gulf Crescent Company for the past 18 years, whom he
calls his first critic. “As a matter of fact her constructive criticism has
polished some of my talents brilliantly” he jokes. While the challenging job
kept him busy in the office during the most hours of the day, she has
successfully managed his house and family without Agnello having to feel the
pressure of it. His elder son Allan S. Fernandes is a CIS Engineer graduated
from American University at Springfield Missouri U.S.A. His younger son Allison
is currently doing Aviation engineering at Australian College of Kuwait (ACK)
at Mishref and soon will be going to Australia for further completion of his
degree. His only daughter Alisha is in grade 8 in Carmel school, Kuwait.
Agnello was the President of Navelim Youth Centre a Sports and Cultural
organization in Kuwait for past 13 years and currently is their advisor now.
His hobbies include sports, especially football, music and reading and he
believes that life’s greatest things come in small packages.

A Gilmpse of Navelim Youth Centre
Navelim Youth Centre (NYC) has been one of the pioneering Social, Cultural and
Sports non
profitable organizations in Kuwait established in 1987.
At the onset of our Centre, it was decided that the main objectives of the
Centre would be:
-To promote sport and conduct social activities in Kuwait
-To maintain cordial relations and provide co-operation and assistance in the
field of sports
and education to Indians preferably to the villagers of Navelim.
NYC’s contribution towards the cost of construction of the Rosary College
premises back home
in Goa as well as the Nazareth Home for the Aged and support towards the needy
has been
notable over the years. In Kuwait, NYC celebrate their annual village feast of

[Goanet] MANYATA'S WOES COME TO FORE IN BANDRA

2008-02-20 Thread godfrey gonsalves
While the Mamlatdar of Salcete, Mr Phaldesai on 19th February, 2007 was
expected to be hearing the reply to his show cause notice issued Ms. Dilnashin
Amir Ahmed Shaikh alias Manyata (claimed to be recently married to film star
Sanjay Dutt ) to prove her credentials of residence in Goa, at 1130 hrs at the
Collectorate office Margao Goa ; the same had to be adjourned to 7th March,
2008 for want of sufficient time . According to the local lawyer Mr Manoj
Dessai representaing her he is stated to have pleaded for time as the notice
was pasted on the door of her alleged abode at House No: 1743, Opp Costa
Grounds Near the Hospital of Dr K A Prabhudesai opthalmagist, Aquem Alto
belonging to one Kadam Desai a few days ago.

While many were eager to have a glimpse of Manyata it turned out to be a false
alarm.

However in the small causes court at Bandra a different proceedings altogether
got underway.

When the hearing commenced this afternoon post lunch session in Case No:
1033/PW/07 and Custody case No:1178 /PW /07 one Mr Mohammed Mehraj presently
lodged in the Arthur Road jail allegedly claiming to be the husband of Ms.
Dilnashin Amir Ahmed Shaikh alias Manyata through whom he has a son now in the
Middle East, was asked to prove his credentials of marriage by the time of the
next hearing on 25th February, 2008. According to the information gathered by
this writer from a source in . the court room Mr Mehraj spoke in Hindi and
English and appears to be of robust appearance around 30 to 35 years. It is
also learnt that he owns a chain of bakeries in Hyderabad. After the brief
proceedings which ended at 1548 hrs he waved to the media and others but was
not permitted to interact with the audio and visual media.

It is now to be seen how the who drama unfurls on 25th February, 2008.

Meanwhile it is surprising that the Shri Chandrakant Pissurlekar, Civil
Registrar-Cum- Sub -Registrar, Salcete, has niether been placed under
suspension nor has he being issued a show cause notice, till date. This
confirms the belief that higher ups are involved in the matter.

[Goanet] Questioning everything

2008-02-20 Thread anand virgincar

 Dear Goanetters ,

As I was browsing through the Goanet archives over the last
year or so , my attention was drawn to the number of posters
whose identity has been questioned by fellow netters. While
I can understand that in my case it was proabably related to
ignorance about Goa ( and to some extent Bernado-bab being
picked out as he shared the same surname as Dotor Jose-bab),
I cannot fathom why the following were cross-examined for
making Goanet postings under false names :

 1) Dr Uday G Barad
 2) Mr Vinay Natekar
 3) Mr Kamalaksh Chari
 4) Mr Chinmay Bhandare

I may well have missed some names of those suffering a similar
fate and would be grateful if they can add their names to this list.

My questions to those who raised the possibility of the posters
 above being fraudulent are :
 1) On what basis were these accusations made ?
 2) As you would undoubtedly not make such serious accusations
without having some concrete proof , how come these posters
( or imposters as you have have labelled them ) continue to
 write on Goanet ?

The situation with Mr Chinmay Bhandare intrigues me even more.

 1) Why has there been confusion over the spelling of his family
name ( with repeated cheap attempts at humour on that basis ) ?
 2) How did the confusion over his gender occur ( with repeated
cheap attempts to ridicule him on that basis ) ?
 3) What did the person who said that no goanetter understands
what he writes mean ? ( I have gone through every post made by
Mr Bhandare on Goanet and can understand every single one
perfectly.I may not agree with some comments he has made and
perhaps disagree strongly with others. That is however an entirely
different matter from the sweeping statement above.

I hope the Goanetters invoved in all these extremely distasteful
events have the civilian sense to clarify the issues raised.
There are certain other questions I have in regard to this matter
that will follow once these straightforward one's are cleared.

 luv and regards,

[Goanet] What I heard at AVC ..

2008-02-20 Thread Dr. U. G. Barad
On Monday 18th February 2008 at 4.30 pm I had to go to Assolna - Salcete to
attend Eucharistic Celebration and burial of my best friend's mother who
left this earth for heavenly peace at her 93.

As the celebration was going on in the Church, a group of 10 -15 persons
that included me were standing at one corner of the church site and with
controlled tone were discussing nothing but unwanted politics of Goa that
too at Eucharistic celebration time!!

One member started the dialogue saying - Goa government is giving computers
only to pay the bills of computer repairers. I have two such computers at
home - one for my son and other for my daughter. I am fed up with government
computers.

Knowing that I cannot sell the computers given by government, I decided to
exchange them to buy new one. But no computer vendor is willing for
buyback!! So I decided to offer them to migrants. Most migrants say - when
we have our Aam Admi government in place why should we buy secondhand
computers from you! My government will take care of me as I take care of
them!! Can any one believe this statement!!!

Second member said - today parking is a real headache in Margao city and
with NANO to come, Margao city will have no place even to drive / move with
car out of Margao. What is to be done? I don't understand why our Aam Admi
is not interested in solving Margao problems? Instead he appears bent on
adding to congestion!!

Third member said - it's for this reason that we should have Manohar
Parrikar back as CM. He is the only CM who proved his worth in giving good
administration, planned development, and at the same time kept the 39 Chores
under his control. Don't you think it's high time that we should work to get
him back?

Forth member said - Over all you are expressing your hate towards Digamber
Kamat?

To this all three members unanimously said - No. We don't express our hate
to Digu but we are expressing what the reality is.

The same fourth member replied - Well, I don't mind you equating Digamber
Kamat to Churchill, to Pratapsingh, to Barbosa, to Sardhin, to Faleiro, or
to any other previous congress CMs of Goa...so much so you even you may say
he is a spineless CM ... I don't mind...but please don't try to equate Kg
with Lt.

At this point I entered the discussion asking - what you mean by equating Kg
with Lt? You as a civil engineer don't you convert Lt Capacity of water tank
to Kg to establish load bearing of the structure? When you are doing this
conversion does it not amount to equating KG with Lt.? Than how come you say
don't equate Kg to a Lt?

He replied saying - I mean you just cannot compare a dictator to a
democratic person.

I inquisitively ask him next question - than how come you think... we the
Goans still appreciate Salazar rule... leave aside other aspects .. and
till today we the Goans consider it to be one of the best rule Goa ever had
and enjoyed .. ... And for your information it was Dictator Salazar who kept
Portugal out of reach to invasions. And if you are talking about communalism
visa vise corruption you still have not explained or clarified what these
three gentlemen's said. All that you did is you diverted the discussion
although I don't know who these gentlemen are?

Sixth person, while introducing those three persons he said --- you know
each of these three persons are respectable personalities of Assolna, Velim,
and Cuncolim ...that's our AVC.

I was taken up by surprise with this explanation and I was suppose to ask
another follow up question...but at the very moment we had to take a break
and join the burial ritual.

That was an interesting discussion

Best regards,

Dr. U. G. Barad

[Goanet] Is Congress Party Secular ?

2008-02-20 Thread Vinay Natekar
I am responding below only to relevant points which Mingel answered to
my post. I have ignored rest of his rant.

Mingel wrote:

It appears to be rather obvious that Vinay not only does not know party
politics and polemics in Goa, but that he is also weak in English. One
should not use words one does not understand. It impresses no one.

Response:

Dear Professor Mingel, Thanks for your discovery about my lack of
knowledge of Goan politics and in your opinion polemics as well. When
you are master of Goan politics what are you doing here on Goanet you
should have begged Congress Party ticket and contested election in
Mhapusa alongwith NCP candidate Ryan Braganza. You might have put some
dent in Francisco Desouza's vote tally even if you could not have saved
your Deposit. Regarding weakness of my English, this language is neither
my mother tongue nor yours. So instead of straining your wits better try
to understand the context what I want to convey. Secondly I believe I
have not done my C.A. in romi konkani. Regarding my use of word for
Congress party as "Fascist" I stand by it and can provide you a dozens
of instances to prove my stance.

The rise of the BJP was not only due to the rabble rousing rhetoric of
the Hindu nationalism that it propounded, but also because it offered a
full alternative to the decrepit arrogance of the Congress Party led by
the Gandhi family caucus which believed they were like the Emperor-Gods
of pre Mughal era. This had lead to a bloated culture of one party rule,
resulting in Nehru-Gandhi family leaders, dispensing licences and
fiefdoms and sewing the seeds of India's degradation in order to
preserve its own powerhouse.

Mingel wrote:

That the Congress has ruled over India for 50 years says something for
its staying power. Why did the shine go out of the BJP in just one term
of 5 years?

Response:

The BJP is proud of its achievements and record in government at the
center in just 5 Years. The party was inspired by the leadership of
Vajpayee the undisputed and charismatic leader who took BJP to great
heights. The NDA unfortunately lost the general election of 2004. A
margin of only seven seats displaced the BJP as the single largest party
in the Lok Sabha. This was a setback but it has not eroded the BJP's
position as the premier democratic organization over others being family
managed run citadels.

Mingel wrote:

BTW on whose votes did Manohar-bab win in Panaji? Not catholic votes by
any chance? On whose votes did Rajendra Arlekar, Babush D'Souza, Prakash
Phadte and some other BJP guys win? Are their constituencies not migrant
dominated when it comes to votes polled?

Response:

Don't apply your vacuous presumptions without doing a proper ground
survey. The prudent catholic voters have whole heartedly supported
Manohar Parrikar in Panaji. The migrant votes have always been
stronghold of Congress since that party was in power for most of the
time and is in better position to buy their votes.

Mingel wrote:

Educational performance of Goans do not show such caste and religious
differences, why do Government departments do even under the Congress?

Response:

It is common notion of proportion. Hindus are 65% of total population so
how you expect them to constitute in disproportionately lower ratio in
Govt dept jobs ?

Vinay

[Goanet] History Hour: Imperial Cultures and Cultural Imperialism - Dr Dietrich Harth

Cultures are composite phenomena and open for changes which may be caused by
intervention from within or from outside. The term 'culture' applied here is
not limited to the realms of symbolic forms and semantic networking. Taken
within a context, it is rather seen as interrelated with political, social
and economic realities. The connection with imperialism already suggests a
similar relation: local and regional cultures are seen interacting with
other cultures. The conflict-laden, very often violent relationship between
Great Britain and India is a strong case in point. My talk will refer to the
history of this encounter in the period between approximately 1750 and 1860.
During this period, preceding Imperialism in the strict sensee, the British
East India Company did not only exploit the distant subcontinent
economically but paradoxically also contributed to modernizing the agrarian
societies and at the same time safeguarding endangered indigenous
traditions. Contradictions in the production of ideas pertinent to
culture-theory have fostered that paradox. In addition, the accomplishments
and failures of the East India Company influenced the culture of the
imperialistic actor, i.e. be it their self-interpretation or concrete
meaning of a long lasting socio-economic structural change. My argument is
that from the encounter between two so diverse societies an intermediary
culture emerged, the effects of which are present in the self-perceptions of
both societies even today.

Dr Dietrich Harth studied German Literature, Classics and Sociology at the
universities in Frankfurt am Main and Tübingen. After his studies at the
University of Erlangen he was appointed professor of Modern German and
Comparative Literature at Heidelberg University. As a guest lecturer he read
literary theory and history of ideas at various Italian, French, Spanish,
Chinese and English university departments. His main research topics include
theory of literature, ritual studies, cultural anthropology and memory, and
the history of European historiography. He is one of the founders of the
publishing house Synchron Publishers Heidelberg
(www.synchron-publishers.com) and of the interdisciplinary research project
Ritual Dynamics (www.ritualdynamik.uni-hd.de). He has written and published
extensively and is member of several associations.

Dear Anandbab,

I agree with Karl Marx (as per Vidyaghar Gadgil) i.e. Question Everything.

My problem with Marxists in general is that while they love to
champion the cause of 'Question Everything', they do precious little
of "Answer Everything"!

What, pray I ask, is the use of Questions without Answers - unless we
are encouraged to further our Imagination?

Now wrt the Bernado-Jose confusao, please be advised that the Answer
is much more Machiavellian than a simple 'common surname'.

Besides soul searching - and head scratching - the implication made on
GoaNet was that jc was masquerading as Bernado in order to post his
point of view.

IP addresses were tracked and ..Bernado was even placed (by me) in the
UK (on holiday) and in Macau (otherwise). Yet ...there was a serious
charge expressed ...one which amounted to 'cheating' by jc.

The very existence of Bernado was challenged - until Dr. Teotonio de
Souza visited Macau and Bernado met with him.

Then came RKN with another beauty. Must say however that RKN having
realised his error, eventually apologised - and the matter ended.

But ...for a good 18 months or so ...it was not as simple as a "common surname".

just that you may know

This is a dilemma in democracies: allow free speech even if it is hate speech
like the article
below. This so-called "Catholic" (Geert Wilders) is another kind of
fundamentalist in a growing
lists of fundamentalists around the world. Every religion seems to sprout their
share of these
hate-mongers, a major threat to civilized society. May their tribes rapidly
decrease, or better
yet may they move to another planet and fight among themselves there.

Loving Konkani Mangalorean Way
? Tomazinho Cardozo

They did it. They toiled, they sacrificed and they achieved success. They
saw that Konkani - its song and music - entered The Guiness Book of World
Records. As GT remarked, "Not Goans but Mangaloreans made Konkani proud
worldwide". Has the Konkani 'Mull Pitth' - Heartland - been shifted from Goa
to Mangalore? Konkani is the official language of Goa then why events like
"Konkani Nirantari" that can take Goa to international fame do not take
place in Goa ? I was a witness to the record-breaking feat at Kala Angann at
Mangalore on that glorious day, 27th January 2008 , when "Konkani
Nirantari" - singing Konkani songs continuously for 40 hours ended
successfully, earlier record was broken and Konkani was catapulted to
international fame. During those two days, I have observed certain facts and
certain qualities in our fellow brothers in Mangalore. According to me, this
behaviour creates enthusiasm and emboldens them to undertake unique events
for the promotion of Konkani. I would like to share my observations on the
mind-set of Mangaloreans towards their mother tongue, Konkani.

First of all, they love their mother - tongue Konkani. They are proud of
their language and hence they do not hesitate to converse in Konkani. Rich
or poor, literate or illiterate, all speak Konkani. I was introduced by
Shri. Eric Ozario, the 'Gurkar' (Head) of Mandd Sobhann to Shri. Rony
Colaco - a NRI and a strong supporter of his mother tongue Konkani. He
discussed with me in his mother tongue Konkani various issues adversely
affecting the growth of Konkani. He was sincere in his views. I found his
deep love for Konkani in his talk. Afterwards I came to know that this
gentleman has donated Rs. Ten lakhs for organizing 'Konkani Nirantari'. He
also donated Rs. Twenty-five lakhs for the completion of 'Kala Angann'
theatre complex, which is under construction. I met yet another NRI, Shri.
Ronald Mendonca, who burns with similar passion for his mother tongue. There
were hundreds of people who have donated Rs. Five lakhs, One lakh, Fifty
thousand, Twenty Five Thousand, Ten Thousand and Five Thousand towards the
show. In fact it was a perople's show without any backing from the
Government.

Out of 43 singing groups that participated in the programme, only six were
from outside Mangalore. 37 groups were from Mangalore diocese alone. Out of
these 37, six groups consisted of religious persons such as Nuns, Priests,
Seminarians, Brothers, etc. Remaining thirty-one groups had come from 31
parishes of Mangalore Diocese. These troupes consisted of choir singers in
the churches and were trained by priests, nuns or by musicians serving in
the churches. In fact 'Konkani Nirantari' was inaugurated by His Grace, Rev,
Dr. Aloysius Paul D'Souza, the Bishop of Mangalore Diocese. If one goes
through the list of hundreds of donors and thousands of singers, one
observes that 99% of the donors and singers consist of people from the
Christian community. Thousands of people who attended the programme were
also Christians. If such a thing had to happen in the field of Konkani in
Goa , it would have been termed a 'comunal' event. In Mangalore it is the
source of strength of the unity of Konkani people. The Church of Mangalore
is directly and indirectly involved in the promotion of Konkani and it does
contribute in a big way towards the success of Konkani in Mangalore.

The Konkani people of Mangalore are the happiest people among the whole
Konkani speaking population of our country. This is because they fought
tooth and nail and won the battle to preserve their mother tongue Konkani
the way they have experienced it for centuries. They thwarted the efforts of
selfish-minded people who wanted to impose Devnagiri script for Konkani in
Mangalore and compel the Mangaloreans to accept 'one language, one script,
one community' concept of fascist nature. They did it in style. Shri. Eric
Ozario was the brain behind this achievement too. In the academic year
2006 -2007 they privately introduced teaching of one subject Konkani in
Kanada script for their children in English medium High Schools. The
Government could not object because they taught Konkani only after the
official school time was over.

The schools managed by priests, nuns and other catholics helped this
movement and over fifty schools started teaching Konkani in Kannada script.
Due to this initiative, the government of Karnataka had no alternative but
to issue a notification recognizing both the scripts - Kannada and
Devnagori- for Konkani. An option was given to use the script of their
choice to teach Konkani. Today there are over 90 schools, all except one
under Christian Management, which teach Konkani in Kannada script. The
children are happy and the parents too are happy because they learn Konkani
in the script and in the dialect of their choice. Because of this, more and
more Chris

[Goanet] Is Congress Party Secular ?

Come again? Why was the statement about "charter tourism" 'unpopular' on
goanet? Since when is its being a drain on our economy and strain on our
infrastrcuture "well accepted" even in tourism circles? And what is the
incomplete bit about "Truth is" at the end?

The fact is that charter tourists (those who arrive here by charter flights)
account for about 200,000 bodies a year. This is half the total number of
foreign tourists. And as against this the total number of tourists in Goa
are reportedly over 2.5 million. So if charter tourists are a strain and
drain as you believe then tourism as a whole is even bigger on this score.
Are you suggesting that if we put a stop to charter tourism then we can put
a stop to ALL tourism? Is that what even tourist circles have accepted?
They must be crazy! Or are you saying there is something particularly
pernicious about charter tourism vis a vis the infrastructure and the
economy? Teach us something new. :)

[Goanet] Building a Better Asia Retreat inaugurated at International Centre Goa

2008-02-20 Thread Goanet News Service

BUILDING A BETTER ASIA RETREAT INAUGURATED AT INTERNATIONAL CENTRE GOA

The Information and Resources Center, Singapore and the International Centre
Goa in association with the Nippon Group of Foundations, Japan is organizing
a week long dialogue and interactions programme, first ever of its kind in
India, titled as "Building A Better Asia - a Young Asian Leaders Retreat".
The retreat is attended by over 30 participants from over 15 countries of
Asia.

The retreat was inaugurated on Sunday, 17 February 2008, with the Keynote
Address by H. E. Dr. Surin Pitsuwan, Secretary-General, Association of South
East Asian Nations (ASEAN).Pratapsingh Rane, President, International
Centre Goa; Speaker, Goa Legislative Assembly and former Chief Minster of
Goa; Dr. Shuichi Ohno, Executive Director, Nippon Foundation, Japan; M
Rajaretnam, Director/ Chief Executive, International Centre Goa and Progamme
Convener of "Building A Better Asia Retreat" (BABA) also addressed the
gathering.

While welcoming the guests, M Rajaretnam said, "the programme is aimed at
promoting and strengthening peace, stability, freedom, independence and
sustainable development in Asia and the world through dialogue and
interactions". He further added that Building A Better Asia - a Young Asian
Leaders Retreat, an initiative to transmit the ideas, activities that will
contribute to build a resurgent, progressive and better Asia and a secure
globe, is organized for the first time in India. He asserted that the
common goal of building a better Asia embodies the idea of 'Global Asia'
promoting the values of Freedom, Free Press, Regional Integration, Greater
Political Participation, Education of Minorities, Intellectual Cooperation
and Human Development in general.

The retreat brought together the intellectuals from all different parts of
Asia to interact and dialogue on issues of resolution of conflicts and
maintenance of peace and security in Asia and the world as whole.

While delivering the Keynote Address titled "ASEAN, India and building a
better Asia" Secretary-General ASEAN H. E. Dr. Surin Pitsuwan said, "Indeed,
East Asian countries have reduced the number of people living in absolute
poverty (i.e., less than a dollar a day) from 420 millions in 1987 to 280
millions in 1998. Despite the advent of the Asian financial crisis then,
there has been no deleterious impact on this achievement over the last
decade. This is truly a great accomplishment that other developing regions
could not emulate".

He added that for the last few decades, the growth which marked Asia has
often been spurred by what Richard Samuels at MIT called "economic
nationalism". This is what Japan did after World War II to which other Asian
countries tried to emulate; producing what Japanese economist Akamatsu
called a V shaped flying geese formation. Economic nationalism is also an
adjunct to economic decolonization. It is an attempt to rid oneself of the
trappings of colonialism.

"Therefore for all we know, the growth with which we witnessed in Asia over
the past few decades, may actually lead to a proverbial silo mentality;
since every country is basically tending to its own economic needs first,"
said Dr. Pitsuwan.

He further said that the relation between India and Southeast Asia is
improving over past couple of years. The trade relations over the past
decade have grown by a quantum of some 330 %, making it one of the most
rapid areas of growth in the world. With the current two way trade being
less than US $ 20 billion, there is also room for growth. This is because
the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of India and ASEAN combined verges on US $
1.5 trillion. Thus, an annualized trade of US$ 20 billion is but a drop in
the bucket.

The retreat will have resource persons from different parts of Asia. The
retreat will be concluded with the Keynote Address by H. E. Shri S C Jamir,
Governor of Goa on Saturday, 23 February 2008.

But days have passed, and you still are not able to find the quote from

why don't you look for a cheaper copy?

Of course, you have two other options. You can admit you were mistaken, and
