[Goanet] Why can't India develop world-class athletes??
Dear Goanetters, My eldest son used to play chess and basketball (from school and college)at district, state level etc. I have been with him at some of the venues, where these games are organised, which are really horrible places. You must experience first-hand the horrible facilities for athletes. All of you have read about MonicaDevi, the Indian weightlifter - first she was banned, then she was informed that there was a mistakeetcIs this the way we treat our athletes? We missed a medal here.Do any of you know of the dirty politics being played by athletes like Mahesh Bhupathi and Co., who instead of concentrating on getting India medals, were behaving like spoilt brats, stating they were not willing to play under Capt. Leander? Then ofcourse there was the hand-paining, leg-paining, I want my mummy at the Olympics - Sania, another spoilt brat who now wants to be treated by foreign physiotherapists, because the Indian physios are kachra. There are also the sport selectors with their own brand of politics, who want athletes of their own state or religion to participate. India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka,etc... have some of the best athletes, but whats happening??? Politicians are too busy creating divisions among people of different religions, caste, etc. leading to fights etc. Regards, == Sportspersonsssage: 1 Date: Wed, 27 Aug 2008 09:11:20 + (GMT) From: edward desilva [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: [Goanet] Why can't India develop world-class athletes??? [Goanet] Association of tiatrist
Albert writes:- It is high time that tiatrist who reside in Bardez should form an association consisting of writers, directors, and actors. Our system of conducting tiatrs is not at all correct. Today Marathi dramas are flourishing all over India sometimes because they have system. A writer will present his drama to the company. The critics will read the script and do necessary corrections at least three to four times. Once the script is approved the script writer's work is over. The company will select a suitable director to direct the drama and the actors and they will rehearse the play several times. Then it is stage before the critic and corrections done and noted. Then second and third stagging of the play before the critics till final ok is given. Once ok is given the director's work is over and the producer takes over.In mean time the company finds a publisher and publishes the play. Our tiatrs do not work like that. The writer director and producer is one and the same person. Three to four rehearsals and the tiatr is on the stage with tiatrist keeping one ear on the prompter. Half of the dialogue is not utilised. Sometimes the play is twisted to u turn. Of course some directors insist on not having any prompter. There is hardly any stage setting. Many times musicians are not paying attention when music is to be played. Sometimes actors have to be imported as the particular actor caught cold feet. Many times there is hardly any co operation from top actors who will merely present one or two songs and run. _ Searching for the best deals on travel? However, why would anyone waste their time and money on such a legal action with all the time and expense involved? Most Goanetters already know the parties involved in this imbroglio and have made up their minds about their characters and actions, and which were intentional or unintentional. Just because Eugene says bad things about Kevin and Lisette does not mean that he automatically achieves credibility. Many will see his critiques and personal attacks as that of a bitter and pathetic individual, what we in north America call a jerk. Others who know him well, or those who have an axe to grind with the Saldanhas may take a different view. Sufficeth to say, as a non-participant at the convention, I know from having conducted a few of these in my time, that the Saldanahas and the other organizers spent endless hours in this endeavor, and should be commended just for that. I'm pretty sure they did their best under trying circumstances. Ask yourselves if you would accept the responsibility of organizing a worldwide convention for potentially a whole boatload of Goan crabs???:-)) Instead just a few crabs identified themselves:-)) Unless anyone has proof beyond a reasonable doubt of any foul play or illegal activity or moral turpitude, if I were the Saldanahas, I would gleefully give Eugene the bird, and go on with my life. Let me remind everyone that Kevin's patients have no idea what Eugene has said, and could care less:-)) Personally, I would not want to make an enemy of someone who spends most of his working life spaying and neutering animals:-)) I agree with Kevin on almost nothing, but I let him know with as much civility as I can muster:-)) Finally, on behalf of Goanetters everywhere, I have already taken it upon myself to sentence Eugene to the harshest sentence of all in such a situation - organizing the next worldwide Goan conference:-)) Let's see how many volunteers he can attract to help him:-))

Mario observes: Gabriel, Far from giving us a history lesson, you are revising history while looking at it through rose tinted glasses. Regarding facts, let me remind you that you had to concede in your previous post on the subject that the white Portuguese masters you seem to be so keen on being subservient to - so much so that their leaving Africa resulted in your avoiding Mozambique and Angola - did not provide their colonial serfs in Goa with electricity, running water, phones, colleges, universities, banks, not to mention roads and bridges, freedom and democracy. Even the stand-offish Brits provided some or all of these things in the rest of India, and developed India's judiciary and secular philosophy for the most part which is remarkable for a poor country where 80% of the population is Hindu. To not develop their colony as the Brits did right next door is a mark of a callous and careless colonial country. By the way you could have migrated to Portugal, but you chose a civilized ex-Brit colony like Australia:-)) Gabriel wrote: Oh, BTW, kindly find out the difference between living in a village (or countryside) and living in a city. That way, perhaps having come to Goa for a holiday might be put in the right context (e.g. pig-toilet, snakes, et al). Mario observes: Unfortunately for the point you are unsuccessfully trying to make, those same villages now have modern sanitary systems, in addition to easy access to electricity, running water, phones, colleges, universities, banks, not to mention roads and bridges, freedom and democracy Gabriel wrote: I've been in places here in Australia where the running water is only meant for bathing (yuk) and flushing, as it stinks of rotting vegetation Mario observes: Once again, you have made my point and not your own. Modern Goan villages, since the Portuguese were kicked out in 1961, now have far better water systems than the places in Australia you are describing.

Goans, Its very sad to see Bihar under floods. 35 lakhs homeless. One of the remark I read is :- QUOTE The floods of yore used to come, wash the lands, and go. Thoughtless development, unleashed by politicians and engineers, over the years, has pushed the populace of Bihar into a permanent flood trap. Edward Sequeira SVD HOW A 20 YEAR OLD GIRL WAS BURNT TO DEATH BY A CHEERING CROWD Fr. Edward Sequeira, a priest belonging to the Society of Divine Word (SVD), was one of those who was seriously injured when his mission station was attacked by the mob in Orissa. Currently recuperating at Burla Medical College Hospital, Sambalpur, Fr. Sequeira, upon gaining consciousness, narrated the story to his brother Commodore Valentine Sequeira who writes: A large mob of more than 700 people were returning after attending the cremation of Swami Laxmananand Saraswati who was killed along with four others Saturday evening by suspected Maoist guerrillas at his Jalespata ashram. The mob was chanting anti-Christian slogans and when they reached Padampur in Bargarh district, they attacked the orphanage where Fr Edward lived. Ms. Rajni, a 20 year old student who lived in the orphanage and was also working as an auxiliary nurse in the orphanage confronted them. When Fr Sequeira arrived at the spot, the mob locked him and Rajni into separate rooms, and ordered the children to vacate the orphanage. The mob then ransacked Fr Sequeira's room, poured petrol on him, Rajni and set the orphanage on fire. I was engulfed in flames, I could hear the cries of Rajni and the mob was cheering and shouting through the windows, recalls Fr Sequeira. He however, managed to crawl to the bathroom, beat out the flames and closed the windows. When I started to suffocate I found a crack on the wall that was damaged in the attack and kept my nose there to breath some air. All the while I could hear the cries of Rajni from the next room where she was writhing in agony. After sometime, there was silence and I thought she must have managed to escape from the room, recalled Fr Sequeira. Unknown to Fr Edward, the girl was burnt alive and had breathed her last. People from the neighborhood who heard the cries of children rushed to the rescue, broke the walls and brought him to safety. That is when the mob attacked him again outside the orphanage and beat him up mercilessly till he became unconscious. He was initially rushed to the hospital at Padampur and later with the help of local officials was shifted to Burla Medical College Hospital, in Sambalpur. [Goanet] GHANTII
Dear UP Kamath, There is a lot of depth to what you say about Maglorean Catholic women. And you cannot be faulted one bit. Besides slavery, it is the enslavement as in the enslaved mind that does one in -- as it appears to have done to the larger Goan population. I do believe that Goan Hindus despite assiduously preserving what they saw as their core identifications; also got benumbed under Portuguese influence. They benefited a lot although it is not that obvious. Furthermore, this I believe is one deeper reason why the political as well as aspects of Goan society were so desperate to be part of the Maharashtra fold -- perhaps in an existential way to become complete again -- or so I presume. The role of women in any society tells one a lot about that society, and in the end it is usually the women who fight for justice as well as salvation (not in the Christian sense) from any form of enslavement as has been seen often in modernity. Again, splendid points UP. venantius j pinto From: U P Kamath [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: [Goanet] GHANTII I find Manglorean Catholic girls and women quite attractive, whereas I find Goan catholics distinctively ugly in general. [Goanet] protection of christians
Dear Goanetters, The Indian Govtmt, the Catholic Pope and the catholic clergy know that they are unable to protect christians in India and hence, should insist that every Indian Christian must be given (1) a licensed gun to protect themselves if they wish to continue to live in India, (2) free lessons in kick-boxing, karate, etc for every Indian christian and (3) every christian must be given free and safe passage and helped to migrate, to a country of their choice, out of India, who can offer them protection for the rest of their lives. If my above proposal goes ahead, I am 1st in que. The christians clergy and christian leaders have not asked for implementation of mandal commission granting reservation benefits to christians, hence christians are not given govtmt jobs in the police force, local panchayat, other impt govtmt jobs, etc, and hence when christians go for help to non-christian police and govtmt officers, they do not get help. There is absolutely no political party, that can boldly state - that when they were in power in a particular state, christians were never tortured. There has never been a christian President or christian Prime Minister, but other minorities have been nominated and elected to such posts. I was present at the below meeting at St. Michael's Church. It was a great turn out. It is sad to read about christian women being raped, burnt, tortured, murdered etc. in India, while our christian men in India and throughout the world, stand by as mute spectators and are unable to protect them. [Goanet] GHANTII - BEAUTIFUL AND CONSTITUTIONALLY FREE GOANS
Dear goanetters and U.P. Kamath, A very famous sayingBeauty is in the eyes of the beholder. Your statement below - whereas I find Goan catholics distinctively ugly in general My response - Please let me remind you, that it was goan beauty, Rita Faria of Tivim village, Goa, who won the Miss World Beauty pageant. Just for your information, the height of the females and males of my family range from 5'9 to 6'3. Your statement - I feel It is due to 450 years of Portuguese slavery. Now one may be politically correct and accuse me of bias. But I feel the Mangalorean catholics had more freedom for generations and it shows on their faces! My response - All goans are proud of - Goan Civil Code Did you know that the state of Goa has one of those legal rarities- the pre-nuptial agreement? The Goan civil code Goa has had a uniform civil code for the last 500 years. Though written in Portuguese, it has been translated into English. The Goan government has realised that these old laws may need to be changed or altered to some extent. Especially the laws concerning property distribution during marriage and divorce. Marriage The uniform civil code insists that all couples must register their intent to marry as well as the marriage itself. The code supersedes religious rules. If a marriage is not registered, the court does not recognize it. Pre- Nuptial Agreement In a pre- nuptial agreement, the couple should choose any of the three available systems which deal with property distribution. This contract cannot be changed after the marriage has taken place. Property If no contract has been signed, it is custom of the country that governs by default. It is assumed that the couple married under communion of property. Properties that belong separately to each of the spouses need to be registered. Otherwise it will be assumed to be community property. All property acquired during the marriage is considered joint property - to be equally divided in case of divorce. Couples who choose to marry under separate property regime must necessarily reject the communion of property. Each of the property acquired even after marriage can only be registered in the name of one of the spouses. There is no dual ownership. The third system is dotal regime, which has couples specifying the property included in the endowment. Though these contracts have a lot of flexibility, they must be drawn up before the marriage. Not a single clause can be changed after the wedding. These family laws in Goa aim to protect both the parties. But like any other law, ignorance of these laws render them less effective. Women should be made aware of these laws and their rights to prefer separate property regimes. Divorce Laws The divorce laws in Goa aim to be fair to both parties. Both the families have three of their members to represent them. They play a significant role in granting a separation and maintenance to be allotted to the needy spouse. If the divorce is not mutually sought but contested, the children's custody usually goes to the person who wants to keep the marriage intact and avoid divorce. These laws apply equally to every one in Goa. Personal law plays no role here. Goan laws are an example of how uniform civil codes treat every member of the society impartially. So, Govan Catholicism was not just religious conversions. They destroyed your ancestry and implanted Portuguese ancestry on you. Let me put forth a simple observation, in poor taste, though. It may be relative, because it is in the eye of the beholder. Note that Mangalorean Catholics migrated to the Canara from Goa in the 17th and 18th century. They have not assimilated into the local population, though they live harmoniously with the locals. [Goanet] Bihar Floods, Goa is wait listed
Dear Fellow Goans, The flood situation in Bihar has worsened. From reports received it is one of the worst floods in the history of Bihar. Our SWARAJ activists in Bihar have come forward to assist the government in relief operations. Whie the Chief Minister Nitish Kumar calls this a natural disaster, this is definitely a man made disaster. When SWARAJ activists over the last 10 years had been repeatedly warning that Indians need not worry about a bomb threat from Pakistan but need to fear being wiped out by gushing waters from the dams constructed in our own country, they were ridiculed. The people living along Koshi river had opposed the construction of a dam but the foolishness of scientists, engineers, contractors and politicians was allowed to prevail. Those living in towns and cities cheered it in the name of development and progress. They needed the water, those affected could go to hell. The end result is that innocent lives are lost every year and for those who survive they are left with nothing except their frail and exhausted bodies attmepting to build their life once again. In all this development frenzy it was always one part of Bihar that year after year remained unconcerned while the other part battled for existence. But this year nature has unleashed it's fair share of vengeance against those who least ecpected that one day it would be their turn to wail and mourn. This time the embankment of the river collapsed way ahead from the usual location and the speed of gushing waters from the high altitudes in neighbouring Nepal is said to have changed the course of the Koshi river taking along with it anything that came in its way. I did have the oppotunity of touring some of these flood prone areas of Bihar earlier this year when attending one of the workshops organised by SWARAJ on flood preparedness. But as usual while some people responded the other's remained unconcerned perhaps thinking that their last year's experience was once in a life time. And like the foolish virgins in the Bible, the floods arrived this year with even greater fury and lakhs of people were not prepatred. We need to thank God that we Goans have not yet been inflicted with such a calamity. But if we do not take care to prevent the government from preparing the grounds for such an excperience through its ridiculous and disastrous development programs in Goa , our day is not far away. The relaity of the floods in Bihar is that neither the arrogant scientist, nor the unscrupulous engineer, nor the greedy contractor and not even the corrupt politician gets washed away in their own creations. It is always the common poor people who are made to pay the price for others sins. So before we condemn those who oppose development projects and cheer the government in support of development let us pause a bit to ask one question, 'how is the development or progress, which I wish to support, going to benefit the poor of the poorest in Goa?'

NCP demands to file FIR against Karnataka's chief secretary Panaji (PTI): Goa unit general secretary of Nationalist Congress Party (NCP)demanded that state should file a First Inforamtion Report (FIR) against Karnataka chief secretary who, in an affidavit to Supreme Court, claimed Goa to be a part of Karnataka. Surendra Furtado pointed out that Karnataka's affidavit in the apex court has mentioned that respondent (Karnataka) reserves the right to file the full history of Goa to show that Goa is a part of Karnataka. The issue had figured in the recently concluded state legislative assembly session wherein chief minister Digamber Kamat had said that he will ask for the original affidavit. Furtado, who is also NCP's spokesman, said `if state fails to file the FIR, he would personally file one, claiming the affidavit to be 'false', 'malacious' and 'misleading'. The affidavit filed by Karnataka's chief secretary is an objection statement to the application for impleadment filed by Goa Konkani Rajya Ekikaran Manch. The manch has been demanding that Karnataka's neighbouring areas of Karwar, Supa and Haliyal be merged in Goa as they comprise of Konkani speaking population. The affidavit says that Haliyal, Supa and Karwar are integral part of Karnataka since historical times. [Goanet] K.K. Birla: a titan of Indian industry (Obituary)
K.K. Birla: a titan of Indian industry (Obituary) By Arvind Padmanabhan New Delhi, Aug 30 (IANS) Legendary industrialist Krishna Kumar Birla was a man of many facets, with an equal passion for not just expanding his well-known, and much respected, business empire founded by his father, but also towards philanthropy and education. Birla was for long considered the force behind the Indian sugar industry, which he joined as a 22-year-old. Besides media and sugar, his empire spans some 40 firms in fertilizers, chemicals, heavy engineering, textiles and shipping. The companies include Zuari Industries, Chambal Fertlizers, Paradeep Phosphates, Sutlej Industries, Birla Textile Mills, Oudh Sugar Mills, Texmaco, Simon India, India Steamship, ISG Novasoft, and Hindustan Times Media. In his innings at the helm of Indian industry, he also headed several institutions like the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (Ficci), the Indian Sugar Mills Association (ISMA) and the International Chambers of Commerce (ICC). He was an outstanding visionary, a great parliamentarian, a business leader par excellence and a builder of modern educational and scientific institutions, said Ficci president and Rajya Sabha member Rajeev Chandrasekhar. Born in Pilani in Rajasthan on Oct 12, 1918, he was the person responsible for building and expanding the reputed Birla Institute of Science and Technology - which has often been rated on par with the Indian Institute of Technology. He was the eldest surviving son of industrialist Ghanshyam Das Birla. Along with another legendary second-generation industrialist, late J.R.D. Tata, Birla had co-authored what is called the Bombay Plan that outlined the role of businesses and the government in building a nation. The seeds of corporate social responsibility in India were sown in that document which also spoke about the role of industries, entrepreneurs and policy makers in modernising and developing what was then a backward India. He also had an equal passion for charity. It is not, therefore, surprising that the landmark Lakshmi Narayan temple in the capital - visited by hundreds every day - is also referred to as Birla Mandir. A former member of the Rajya Sabha for 18 consecutive years, KK Babu, as he was referred to by his associates and admirers, was also the chair of the Hindustan Times group, which is one of the largest circulated national dailies. The stylish and well-groomed industrialist, whose suits and shirts came from London's Jermyn Street and Saville Row, also wrote highly readable reminiscences on his many foreign travels with his wife for the Hindustan Times till about a month ago. His close associates said he just could not bear the separation from his wife Manorama Devi who died in Kolkata July 29. He is survived by daughters Nandini Nupani, Saroj Potddar and Shobhana Bhartia, the vice chair of Hindustan Times. Birla was so comfortable with change and transformation that even when the country started the ambitious economic liberalisation programme in the early 1990s and dispensed with the regime of licences and quotas, he was fully supportive - unlike many others who even formed an informal anti-liberalisation lobby group called the Bombay Club. There were many business leaders who were worried, who were apprehensive, who were nervous about the changes, recollected Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, who as India's finance minister then was the architect of the reforms programme. But Birla understood the importance and the relevance of what we were doing and I valued his support then as I value it now, Manmohan Singh recalled last December, while releasing Birla's autobiography - Brushes with History. The book, published by Penguin, has vignettes of his relations with some legendary Indians like Mahatma Gandhi, Rajendra Prasad, Madan Mohan Malaviya, Jayaprakash Narayan and Morarji Desai. Penguin said Birla inherited a legacy in which the creation of wealth, philanthropy and political leadership were all regarded as part of nation-building. Spiritual strength and moral values were part of the personal credo.
Re: [Goanet] The outsiders
Hi Bernado It may not have registered with you what was recently stated on Goanet. First, the Goan/Indian doctor in the Carribean is the coolie doctor as per the local people. Second, for argument sake, you compare a highly trained/qualified doctor with a coolie and this is nonsensical. Third to combat the problem of parts of Goa becoming open latrines, you studiously avoided the pragmatic argument from several Goanetters for permanent and portable toilets where appropriate. Fourth, I assert that any Goan would, to use your terms, piss and shit around if toilets were not available in given circumstances. Murmugao harbour (or as often referred to as Marmagoa) was one huge open air latrine for Goan men, women and children when 'camping' out for a night or two prior to catching a ship to British and Portuguese East Africa. This was also recorded on Goanet. Fifth, where do you think the Goans, among the other Indians, faced the call of nature during the long trek between Mombasa and Nairobi and then beyond to Kisumu and Kampala, prior to and during the construction of the railway? Not even their colonial masters doing that trek, largely on foot, had portable or any other toilets at the dawn of the 20th century. So wake up man, because it appears that in the cases above, you only read what you want to and shut your eyes to other detail. Please do not damn the workers who come to Goa because there is work for them. Public education over sanitation and the provision of sanitation facilities go hand in hand re any desired or required building construction work. Now let us see how you might respond to the above. Good wishes Cornel --- Bernado Colaco [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Goans do migrate and have migrated for centuries to other countries. [Goanet] violence against christians
Dear Fr. Francisco, Diocesan Centre for Social Communications Media - Goa and the Archbishop of Goa must shut down all christian institutions in Goa, until the Orissa govtmt sentences the culprits of the violence against the christians. The Catholic Pope or his representative, alongwith the Secy of the United Nations must personally visit Orissa, to show that our catholic men want to protect the Orissa Christian women. Regards, From: Diocesan Centre for Social Communications Media - Goa [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: [Goanet] ARCHBISHOP'S CIRCULAR ON ORISSA RIOTS We are pleased to send here below, for your perusal, the approved English translation of the Circular Letter sent by Archbishop Filipe Neri Ferrao to all the Parish Priests of the Archdiocese. The Archdiocese of Goa and Daman comprises Goa, Daman, Diu, Dadra and Nagar Haveli and the original Circular was sent in Konkani. Kind regards, Fr. Francisco Caldeira, Director, DCSCM. Circular Letter To the Priests, Religious, Lay Faithful and People of good will (Approved English version of the Circular Letter No. CP-Cir/202/2008 written originally in Konkani language) Theme: Violence in the State of Orissa Dearly Beloved, The happenings taking place these days in Orissa cannot but cause concern. VHP leader, Swami Lakshananda Saraswati and four of his companions were shot at and murdered in their Ashram and, since then, Christian individuals and institutions are being targeted and destroyed. The Catholic Bishops in India have expressed their sorrow and registered their protest over the killing of the Swami and the ensuing spate of violence and asked for prayers for peace; together with them, we too expressed our feelings over these events: you will have read this on the newspapers. However, there is no guarantee that these chilling events will end soon and there do not seem to be signs that this communally disturbed atmosphere will be cleared easily. Some organizations in Orissa are laying the blame on the Christian Community, thus fanning the anti-Christian communal flame across the State. This has resulted, among other acts of violence, in the tragic burning to death of a woman working at an orphanage and of a paralytic man in his own house. Two priests and a few religious women were also seriously injured. Some priests and nuns have gone into hiding. We cannot remain indifferent in such a situation. We need to express our solidarity with our brothers and sisters who are going through untold suffering. It is with this in mind that we have planned to take the following initiatives in our Archdiocese: All Catholic educational institutions in the Archdiocese shall remain closed on August 29. September 7, Sunday, will be observed as a day of prayer and fasting. A signature campaign will be organized to express our condemnation. Protest Rallies will be held in a couple of places in Goa. More details will follow. In view of the situation in Orissa, we appeal urgently to our Priests, Religious men and women, Christian faithful and all women and men of good will to express their solidarity with those who are suffering so grievously and, through their prayers for peace and communal harmony, to help these programmes meet with success. Barve's fears are without any rhyme or reason. AICF reserves the right to accept or reject such entries without assigning any reason. My fear are based this and past track record of AICF. B. 1. National B is considered to be a Money spinning event for any Association. 2. Check the past record of entry fee paid by local players for National B event... 3. Goan were presuming entry fee of Rs.3000/- only as was the case for National U-7 held in 2006. 4. In the last National B event held at Dindigul, a remote city of TN. No of entries were 300+. 5. We were expecting 500+ entries. As there are other technical reason for increase in number of entries. 6. Unrated Goan player will have to pay Rs.1000/- more then the prevailing practice. Dear Sandeep, you know the omissions and commissions of Goa State Chess Association official website launched on March 21, 2008 (I was suspended from March 27) at the hands of CM Shri Digamber Kamat in presence of only two (out of total 19) Executive Member One President himself Second Shri Tanay Kaisary, others only one. total 3. Please explain these omissions and commissions to goanetters along with all that you feel good of Mr. Sameer Salgaocar I am only concern of welfare of CHESS. It is almost eight months from the issue of Coaching Program circular and another very very bad circular for CHESS. AICF has Rs.90 lac surplus. There are over 400 eligible chess playing children as per coaching program circular. When is AICF going to give coaching facilities to these children? Has AICF made any special coaching program for those 50 children like IVANA and BHAKTI and RIYA who are going to represent India at World Youth meet? AICF reserves the right to accept or reject such entries without assigning any reason. Why prospectus of National B should include above mentioned sentence? Discuss these. Why are you diverting attention to non issue? Dear Sandeep, you know that I am now busy with The Right Move II-Career in Sports don't trouble me with non issue. I will answer only main issue. Re: [Goanet] woman slaps GMC doctor - hats off to Sonia -
Dears, I can very well understand the grief felt by Ms Mhambre at the loss of her mother. I can also accept that different individuals handle stress differently. However, the fact remains that Ms. Mhambre assaulted and committed battery on the young doctor. She should have to face the consequences of her illegal act. The next thing we might hear from some looney bin is that it is OK to bomb police stations and slap police officers because (in general) the police are rude, inefficient and corrupt. I fail to understand (my fault) the statement I feel sorry for the doctor who took the brunt, but somebody had to be slapped at the GMC. Just imagine if a hardworking and otherwise law-abiding Bhaillo was upset by the way some Goans were treating Bhaille in general, and just decided to slap eddie or jose who happened to be walking on the road. I absolutely disagree with Jane wrt 'Govtmt hospitals are meant for the poor and those who cannot afford private hospitals'. That approach, IMHO, is the best way to destroy a Govt Hospital. Besides, health care at hospitals is provided/subsidised by the taxes paid by the citizens/residents of a place. These tax-payers have a right to healthcare at those hospitals. What they do not have, are preferential rights which are also (and corruptly) afforded to Politicians and other VIPs. If everyone was afforded the same rights, privileges and service, there would actually be an improvement of service for all. The Goa Medical College started off with two very clean hospitals providing very polite service. This was inherited from the Escola Medica tradition. I saw it personally a few years after the transition took place. The Goa Medical College (according to my understanding) provided better 'medical' service than the Escola which provided better 'surgical' service. The training of the Escola graduates was more geared to surgery - probably because of their enhanced study of Anatomy. It is during the Bamdodkar years esp when Karmali was Health Minister and Duarte Monteiro was replaced that the mess started. The Goa Govt has a long history of interference with GMC. The real breaking point came with the appointment of Vengsarkar as the Dean. Much time was spent in politics eg Maharashtrian professors v South Indian professors etc. I will not comment on the accountability or lack of it wrt the origins of the Bambolim project. Goan professionals, patients and Goa took a back seat. Anna Marie Goswami please take note. These non-Goan Health Secretaries, Deans, HoDs, Professors et al who had NO clue of Goan culture and obviously NO interest in Goans and Goa (except personal) took charge of Goa, bossed the Goans and set about the rot which has taken over the Goa hospitals. With ALL the crores allegedly invested in GMC and other hospitals, the state of the hospitals and the service provided is absolutely abysmal. The places are filthy, the sheets are unclean and the staff is rude. Some of the so called professors and other senior staff are full of themselves.(I believe that Edward has alluded to this) I can tell you that from personal experience.Over the past several years, I have been to GMC and to Hospicio (Margao) on a number of occasions, incognito i.e. with chappals, very simple clothes and speaking English really badly - like many guys in Goa normally do. The reception I got at the hospitals, and what I saw ... was positively awful. I invite other netters to go incognito to test out the service. I could not believe that the GMC I trained in and which had (at the time) 2 hospitals akin to a 4 star hotel ...had become this DUMP with newer equipment. The bright side is that GMC produces excellent graduates ...at least the ones I have personally helped to recruit to hospitals on this side of the globe. The dark side is that Goans in Goa have been 'liberated' of their decent hospitals, and have had them replaced by a set of dumps. No wonder one of the frustrated broke the law and slapped a happless junior doctor. I could understand and would even applaud if Ms Mhambre had slapped the Minister or Secretary of Health (whoever that is) or even Dean Jindal (for presiding over this attrocious dump without overtly discernable protest). I will not condone the slapping of a simple little junior doctor. But then, we seem to only take out our frustrations on the weak. just my view jc == edward desilva [EMAIL PROTECTED] The daughter could have been schizophrenic, or she might have pleaded several times to the doctors to give her mother better treatment, which fell on deaf ears I feel sorry for the doctor who took the brunt, but somebody had to be slapped at the GMC Now, the doctors at GMC think that they are the LAW? [Goanet] Rajya Sabha MP - visits home of Pai tiatrist
The Member of Parliament Rajya Sabha, Mr Shantaram L Naik, accompanied by this writer visited this morning the over 140 years old humble home of Pai tiatrist Joao Agostinho Fernandes, at Behind Holy Spirit Insititute, Modsai, Margao Goa. The legendary Pai Tiatrist died 61 years ago on 29/08/1947 at G T Hospital, Girgaum, Mumbai and the Government of Goa has named the Ravindra Bhavan A/c indoor auditorium at Margao in the name of Pai tiatrist - Joao Agostinho Fernandes, on 20th July, 2008 at the inaugural function of the Ravindra Bhavan. Mr Naik had a brief tete a tete with Mrs Ana Conceicao Quadros Fernandes the daughter-in-law of Pai tiatrist and his daughter Ms Sharmila Fernandes. He was told by Mrs Fernandes, a senior citizen aged 76 years that she desired to maintain the house in its present form for posterity as per the wishes of Pai Tiatrist even though there were several offers by realtors to put down the house and develop the plot for putting up a Building. They impressed upon Mr Naik to seek Central or State Government financial assistance for urgent repairs and restoration of the house. They also desired that the original books now lying in the custody of the Goa Konkani Academy for which no monetary assistance was given be returned to them after GKA retaining only a fascimile copy of the same, since it was her desire to keep the copy rights of the original scripts and to keep on display all these works, personal effects of Pai tiatrist for posterity. As widow of the late Tony Fernandes, son of Pai tiatrist (who also died three years ago on 22/08/2005) who was also a Konkani playwright she sought financial assistance from the Directorate of Art Culture, as currently their daughter was the sole bread earner being self employed and was finding it difficult to make both ends meet and look after two grandchildren. Mr Naik was apparently moved by their desire to maintain the humble home at a time when Goans were selling off their ancestral homes lured by financial offers. He made a brief detour of the house to ascertain for himself the ground realities. He promised to do whatever best he could for the family.. The family expressed profound gratitude to the Hon'ble MP (RS) for his personal visit and thanked him for envincing keen interest in their endeavours.. Meanwhile several people have been paying tributes to the legendary Pai Tiatrist by visiting his ancestral home in Modsai ever since the Ravindra Bhavan Indoor auditorium was named after him. It may be noted that the residence of late Chris Perry is a stone's throw from the residence of Pai tiatrist and on the Caminho de Monte lies the house of late Anthony Mendes now unfortunately learnt to have been disposed off for setting up a hospital. from the Modsai end GODFREY J. Re: [Goanet] Why can't India develop world-class athletes???
Date: Fri, 29 Aug 2008 16:58:30 +0900 From: Venantius Pinto [EMAIL PROTECTED] Chinese victories on the other hand are entirely the effort of a state system. Mario observes: Venantius, you might want to reconsider the word entirely. Regardless of how much assistance the state provides in terms of facilities, coaching and money, it is finally the individual who has to compete, and they are subject to normal human frailties, physical and psychological, just like anyone else. Venantius wrote: China on the other hand will wipe out most things in its way for the alleged good of the state, India is grinding it out with the Narmada Bachao Andolan (34 years and counting). Mario observes: There has got to be a better explanation, though both Ed and Venantius touched on some of the reasons. The reason I'm saying this is that there are so many countries who are not as regimented as China, who produce world class athletes year in and year out, like impoverished Jamaica for example, or Cuba. Furthermore, Indian hockey in years gone by, and Indian cricket more recently have shown that India does have the capability when the focus is there and people of goodwill make it a priority. There are also other options that Indian athletes should consider. For example, the US is the free world's crucible for the development of world class sportsmen and women from around the world. The US attitude is such that it has no problem helping develop athletes from other countries and then competing with them. The paradox is that this kind of attitude and the competition that results from it makes the US athletes better even though they lose to an US-trained foreign athlete every now and then. If anyone watched the US and Canadian coverage of the Olympics they would know that MOST of the track and field athletes, and many basketball players and athletes in other sports, regardless of which country they represented, were or had been students at US universities or played professionally in the US. This system helps the American university programs and it helps the athletes as well. A classic example of freedom and free enterprise in action, as compared with the regimented Chinese state run system. Milorad Cavic, the only swimmer to almost beat Michael Phelps in the 100 meter butterfly, represented Serbia but lives and trains in California. The lesson here is that promising Indian athletes could do the same, which would take whatever is wrong with Indian sports out of the equation, including money, because all these athletes I have referred to are given athletic scholarships by the US universities. A good example of one who could have done what I am suggesting but did not is Sania Mirza, who had the talent to be world class. Unlike the European tennis stars, many of whom live and train in the US, she chose to live and be abused in India, and the inconsistent results are there for all to see. The four women who represented India in the 4 x 400 meters relay, would surely all qualify for athletic scholarships at American universities. To help them feel at home, even bhelpuris and pakoras are now freely available in almost every major city in the United States:-))

[Goanet] GHANTII
To begin with, I wish we ended the title of this thread as it is no longer and in no way connected to the contents of the posts. In keeping with my other series of posts, that I am writing, with all due respects to Kamath, I have to repeat the by-line You told us the fiction, now lets see the facts U P Kamath UPK: But racism under them (Portuguese) was much more severe than the British! The state was much more oppressive. GL: There are no facts to support this statement. UPK: When did Da Costa, De Cunha, Fernandes or Quatros become more christian than Goan family name like Kakodkar, Shirodkar, Poi or Prabhu? GL: No one claimed the new names were more Christian. Converts changing names is seen more recently when 'whites' convert to Hinduism or Buddhism. Individuals also change their name when they take a new nationality as is done when one takes citizenship. That does not mean that one abandons their original identity. A rose is sweet by whatever name one gives it Would you call Hindus in USA or UK who have changed to Western names any less Hindu? UPK: So, Govan Catholicism was not just religious conversions. They destroyed your ancestry and implanted Portuguese ancestry on you. GL: How can this be possible unless there is a genetic transmission? UPK: Let me put forth a simple observation, in poor taste, though. It may be relative, because it is in the eye of the beholder. Note that Mangalorean Catholics migrated to the Canara from Goa in the 17th and 18th century. They have not assimilated into the local population, though they live harmoniously with the locals. They have their religion intact, Go to masses on Sundays and other festive days etc. They have preserved their Konkani language, publications, music and Theater. GL: Does not the above apply to Goan Catholics? Dose not the Goan and Manglorean cultural practices of the Christian community contradict your prior statement? UPK: I find Manglorean Catholic girls and women quite attractive, whereas I find Goan catholics distinctively ugly in general. I feel It is due to 450 years of Portuguese slavery. Now one may be politically correct and accuse me of bias. But I feel the Mangalorean catholics had more freedom for generations and it shows on their faces! GL: This comment devoid of any logic does not need to be dignified with a response. This statement (if true) suggest there was / is no connection between being Christian and being Goan. Regards, GL

[Goanet] woman slaps GMC doctor - hats off to Sonia -
jane gillian rodrigues said: Can Goanetters please tell me why Sonia, (WHO LOVED HER MOTHER VERY MUCH) did not take her mother to a private hospital, where she would have got better, personal, expensive attention? -- Reply: Working conditions for junior Doctors are the same in UK as well - overworked and underpaid. Private hospitals do not have all the facities that are available in the GMC which is funded by the TAXPAYERS (rich and poor alike), the same applies to UK. The rich are forcefull because we can understand the mistakes the doctors make, and we are rich because we have done our Phds, we are not dumb like the poor. There is a limit to how much the rich can afford, private hospital also manipulate and linger the sick persons illness to get more money out of them, do unnecessay operations etc. It is always wise to slap the donkey to get the cart moving. Comment: Whether racism was more or less severe than the British, only someone who has made a comparative study can comment. To the layman both were undesirable. UPA: I find that centuries of Portuguese repression, or rather slavery, should i list: Take the Goan catholic names for example: When did Da Costa, De Cunha, Fernandes or Quatros become more christian than Goan family name like Kakodkar, Shirodkar, Poi or Prabhu? So, Govan Catholicism was not just religious conversions. They destroyed your ancestry and implanted Portuguese ancestry on you. Comment: May I suggest that you visit the libraries and study goan history before punching your keyboard. A goan is as alike to a Portuguese as chalk is to cheese. Not only has the goan catholic inherited the customs and traditions of the his Hindu ancestors but even the obnoxious caste system. So much for destroying ancestry and implanting Portuguese ancestry. A rose called by any other name smells just the same. UPA: Note that Mangalorean Catholics migrated to the Canara from Goa in the 17th and 18th century. They have not assimilated into the local population, though they live harmoniously with the locals. They have their religion intact, Go to masses on Sundays and other festive days etc. They have preserved their Konkani language, publications, music and Theater. Comment: The goan catholics are no different. Please visit any of the villages. The people live as harmoniously with their neighbours, go to church and have preserved their language, culture, music and theatre. UPA: I find Manglorean Catholic girls and women quite attractive, whereas I find Goan catholics distinctively ugly in general. I feel It is due to 450 years of Portuguese slavery. Now one may be politically correct and accuse me of bias. But I feel the Mangalorean catholics had more freedom for generations and it shows on their faces. Comment: Maybe you need to visit an optician for an eye check up.Please check how many goan girls have been selected as Airhostesses, become Models, won beauty contests, become filmstars. And to connect beauty with Portuguese rule defies logic. Regards, Marshall
Re: [Goanet] GHANTII
UP, What does beauty have to do with religion or colonial rule ? Mangalorean girls generally look beautiful both catholic and hindus. e.g is Aishwarya Rai, Shilpa Shetty, Genelia D'Souza and Rita Lobo (from a well known Konkani movie) This might be a genetic thing and has nothing to do with religion. Even among GSB's - Kannada GSB girls seem more attractive e.g Deepika Padukone, Amrita Rao. Does this also have something to do with Portuguese ? Also it would be wrong to call some *ugly* just because your definition of beauty is different. regards Rishikesh

[Goanet] Creative heads to exchange views, plan innovations in Goa
Creative heads to exchange views, plan innovations in Goa Indo-Asian News Service Panaji, Aug 30 (IANS) Goa is getting set to host a major design meet Sep 13-15, which aims to offer a platform for designers and people involved in creative industries to exchange ideas, share knowledge and create new innovations. Organisers of the event called Kyoorius Designyatra have packaged it as a visual communications event guided by top designers and creative heads from various creative fields. The programme held here will include a design conference, bringing in presentations by prominent global practitioners in the fields of design, web, branding and marketing. There will also be workshops and panel discussions. Visual communications is a changing landscape. The future of this business points towards a multidisciplinary approach to design - the leaders will be those who are able to communicate across several media to best achieve predefined objectives. Some call this 360 degrees marketing. Others, total branding, said an organiser. The stress is on the need for designers who embrace the challenges of discovery and the rewards of helping clients, both old and new, communicate in the brave new world of cross-media. This includes design for websites, video and television, as well as tradeshows, products and print. Interestingly, India is very much still considered a specialist market. A graphic designer designs for print, a photographer photographs, an illustrator illustrates. When it involves the web, an interactive team is then hauled in to complete the task. When a brochure is required, a designer is called to take up the task. It is possible for creatives to survive working in isolation within the context of their individual skill tasks and specialization. Organisers said they hoped to see more open sharing between studios, not just in the same areas of specialization, but also across disciplines. Some of the big names taking part in the event include Paul Belford (This is Real Art), Richard Bullock (180 Amsterdam), Patrick Burgoyne (Creative Review), Tyler Brule (Monocle Winkreative), and Ashish and Ashwini Deshpande (Elephant Strategy + Design). Others slated as speakers are Kenya Hara (Nippon Design Center), Erik Kessels (Kesselskramer), Peter Kersten (BNO), Nicolas Roope (Poke), Eric Scott (Saffron Brand Consultants), Paula Scher (Pentagram) Preeti Vyas (Vyas Giannetti Creative) and Michael Wolff (Michael Wolff Company). Wolff is the co-founder of Wolff-Olins, the influential British branding consultancy. He is widely acknowledged as one of the most experienced practitioners of corporate identity and branding, and a joint recipient (with Wally Olins) of the DAD President's Award in 2003. Scher has been at the forefront of graphic design. Her successful graphic identities for Public Theater, Citibank and Tiffany Co. have become case studies for contemporary branding. Bullock is the joint executive creative director at 180 Amsterdam. He is famously known for his award-winning work on the Adidas account, which resulted in Adidas receiving the prestigious 'Advertiser of the Year' award at the 2006 Cannes Festival. Belford is one of the most awarded art directors in the world, while Brule launched Wallpaper magazine in 1996, a title which became an instant publishing success and part of the cultural vernacular. The Deshpandes are both founders, directors and principal designers at Elephant. Set up in 1989, it is widely recognized as the pioneering innovative multi-disciplinary design practice from India with work spread across more than 80 countries. Vyas of Vyas Giannetti Creative is considered among the top three most influential women in advertising and has also been one of the strongest advocate for introducing design into advertising. Workshops at Designyatra 2008 will include ones on digital campaigns, magazine design, discussions on branding, art direction and mixed communication.

[Goanet] Goan music-4: HERALD(Goa), Aug 31, 2008
GOAN MUSIC-4 By Valmiki Faleiro The British occupied Goa 20-odd years. From 1799. This led to their discovery of the virtues of Mormugao harbour. Which, in turn, led to the Luso-British project to modernize the port and link it to mainland India by the Western India Portuguese Railway, the rail girdling Goa from Mormugao to Castlerock. Locals resented the British presence. A mando on this tails an interesting dulpod: Kira bhaxen pinzreantu ga (Like caged parrots) Inglez ailo Goantu (The English have arrived in Goa) Boson ujea’ gaddiantu ga (Sitting in steam-engine trains) Ankvar cheddvam hankeantum (Unmarried girls in their laps) Margao’s rail station opened Jan 17, 1887. It was a mile away from the town centre (‘Mercado de Vasco da Gama,’ now Old Market.) The administration decided to shift it closer to the new hub. The new market, ‘Mercado Novo de Afonso de Albuquerque’ was inaugurated Dec 5, 1889. The taluka’s main offices – the ‘Camara’ (municipality) and ‘Fazenda’ (revenue office) – were also slated for relocation. The story is told of the ceremony to lay the foundation stone of that most grandiose municipal edifice in Goa: of Salcete (by now substantially shrunk in area and population, after Mormugao was carved out for better administration of the port.) Officials were upbeat about the function. With reason: a grand cash prize was announced to any woman who would carry the foundation stone to the laying spot – without a stitch on her body. The year: 1901. A Medeira damsel from Comba-Margao, driven by either a sense of wild adventure or a mundane need of the prize money, stepped in to the challenge. At the appointed morning hour, before the assembled dignitaries and a huge crowd, she stripped, heaved the stone to the ‘chumboll’ on her head, and delivered it some distance away at the pit. The audience, initially dumbstruck, went into appreciative peals of applause. The Medeira maiden earned not only the prize, but also much approbation for her natural assets from the assemblage of ‘Pakles’ and local men. Rumour was that she ended up working at the construction site, hand-pounding limestone for the mortar of the building. At that desolate site, her fate and that of other female labourers will be better imagined than expressed. To fund this edifice, Governor Eduardo Augusto Rodrigues Galhardo imposed steep taxes. (Check coincidences: last Sunday, we saw how a Guv. called ‘Camara’ killed Goa’s Camaras, an Administrator called ‘Faro’ had 23 innocents shot dead, and now, ‘Galhardo’ meant a spendthrift!) Public resentment reflected in a mando composed by Arnaldo de Menezes of Raia (1863-1917), “Kitlem odruxtt amchem vorho.” Its lyrics tell the story better than any description (translation mine): Great is our adversity, Goa is finished Pakles are harassing people because they want to build a municipal house Inventing all sorts of taxes, they extract them from impoverished people. Municipal councillors are a gang of thieves Brains dense as stone, they look like the baker’s pigs Squeezing taxes, they drink at Cruz’s tavern. Governor Galhardo skinned people He came with a gang of white soldiers and emptied the treasury Galhardo is a genuine buffalo, people’s curses will affect him. Tragedy has befallen us, we are quite undone Even Goa’s medical profession turns whites blind with envy They banned our doctors’ ambulances! Like the 1890 Margao elections, those of 1854 in Tiswadi had produced another great mando, ‘Luisinha, mojea Luisinha.’ Intense rivalry between whites and natives led to the killing of a Mestiço (mixed-blooded) Portuguese army captain, Joaquim Garcez Palha, a contestant who went to Divar to rig the polls. It describes how he was soundly spanked and his body quartered (in the compound of a local church.) The dekni, “Custoba, miraxi Indiecho is about legendary Kustoba Rane and the dulpod, Farar far on the confrontation between the Portuguese and the feudals of Sattari. There are hundreds of mandos, dulpods and deknis – most are pages from Goa’s past. Let’s end on a lighter note. Salcete’s traditional Brahmin-Kshatriya superiority syndrome manifested itself in strange ways. Benaulim, the only Brahmin village in a Kshatriya-dominated Salcete coast, had a running feud with adjoining Colva over the “Benaulim Monte.” Old texts indicated it belonged to Colva. The Banalcares were not impressed. Both sides petitioned everyone from Governor in Panjim to King in Lisbon. They finally agreed to have the matter resolved at the Salcete Court. Despite overwhelming evidence produced by Colva, Benaulim won the case. Banalcares produced just one piece of clinching evidence: the old dulpod, “Bannaleche monti socolo rodtai kole!” (To conclude.) (Ends.) The Valmiki Faleiro weekly column at: http://www.goanet.org/index.php?name=Newsfile=articlesid=330 == The above article appeared in the

[Goanet] Goa Medical Hospital, Utt Goenkara etc
To Goanet - I distinctly remember the old hospital in Panjim soon after Goa's Liberation and in the few years thereafter. I don't mean to say it was the acme of perfection, but it was a respectable place. To think of what has become of it today! The sty we have in Bambolim, that some of you refer to as a hospital. This is decay, right from the third-worldish physical construction, to its (non)maintenance and neglect. If there is one common thread running through the complex, it is rust, dust and the smell of urine. That's Indianisation for you. One round of the hospital in Bambolim and you find it hard to tell it apart from a ghati slum. That is because it IS a ghati slum today. The migrants are getting one hell of a free ride paid for by us Goans. Note: no humane society should deny medical care to those in need of it. I am talking about the rampant abuse of the system. How did we get mired in this soup in the first place and why in the world do we stand for it? During the tourist season, visitors of all kinds pile on at the hospital because they have figured it is cheaper to spend the night there than at a hotel in Goa! The slaps and chappals should be aimed not at the junior docs but at the Health Minister and his underlings, including the Dean (is there no qualified Goan to head the College that we must time and again import third-rate outsiders?). * Utt Goenkara deserves a warm round of applause for leading the fight against corruption and helping evict an IAS officer. I believe that EVERY single IAS officer, active or not, living in Goa must be fully investigated. These are the scum of the earth, exploiters of public resources to feather their own nests. Not too long ago I had the opportunity to sit next to this odious Bengali during a meeting called as a result of the PIL on Panjim. It is only my refined Goan genes that reined in my instinct to piss on him. * I note that the usual passel of commentators have begun commentating on the imminent struggle to achieve special status for Goa. The same old cast not a single member of which has spent ONE honest hour working to save Goa from the vultures currently circling overhead. Warm regards, r

[Goanet] The outsiders
Hi Cornel, You may not be aware that Doutor JC beat a couple of hundred coolies to get his post. So this vile comment about him is unwarranted. As for portable toilets this will not solve the problem. Goa is deeply entrenched in a wave of ghanti migration. How much will Goa spend on teaching a ghanti to get into a toilet and let alone using it with care? Will there be volunteers? Will the likes of Helekar, Gouveia, or yourself leave the kingdom of ivory to help out? BC Hi Bernado It may not have registered with you what was recently stated on Goanet. First, the Goan/Indian doctor in the Carribean is the coolie doctor as per the local people. Second, for argument sake, you compare a highly trained/qualified doctor with a coolie and this is nonsensical. Third to combat the problem of parts of Goa becoming open latrines, you studiously avoided the pragmatic argument from several Goanetters for permanent and portable toilets where appropriate
[Goanet] From Kashmir to Orissa, the saffron camp's violent role (Comment, Amulya Ganguli)
From Kashmir to Orissa, the saffron camp's violent role (Comment) posted 15 hrs ago | 36 Views | View Source: Amulya GanguliShareThis Just as the deaths of 'kar sevaks' (Hindu pilgrims) in an arson attack on their train led to retaliatory violence by the Hindutva brigade against Muslims in Gujarat in 2002, similarly the murder of five Hindus, including the head of an ashram in Orissa, has sparked off attacks against Christians by the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) and Bajrang Dal activists. Why the Christians should have been targeted is not clear because the murders were reportedly committed by Maoists. However, since it is not easy to track down the Maoists in their jungle hideouts, the saffron warriors seem to have vented their wrath on the Christians with whom they have long had a tense relationship. Only last winter, the longstanding feuds between them erupted in violence. The most gruesome incident was in 1999 when a Christian missionary, Graham Staines, was burnt alive with his two young sons by saffron activists. Since the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was in power at the centre then, apart from being an ally of the ruling Biju Janata Dal (BJD) in Orissa, there was even an initial attempt by George Fernandes, the convener of the National Democratic Front, to pass off the tragedy as an 'international conspiracy', with Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik sitting quietly besides him. This time also, a woman was burnt alive when an orphanage was set on fire while houses, shops and churches have been attacked over a large area. The latest incidents have provoked several BJP legislators to threaten to withdraw their support to the government of Naveen Patnaik since, first, he failed to prevent the attack on the ashram and, secondly, he has apparently been less tolerant of the rampaging Hindutva mobs than Narendra Modi was in Gujarat during the communal riots. One of the grouses of the BJP, the VHP and the Bajrang Dal against the Christians is their missionary activity among the tribals. Churches, therefore, are a prime target of the saffron mobs, as they were in Gujarat's Dangs area where, too, the saffron brotherhood had targeted the Christians before their attention turned to Muslims. The VHP had set up their bases in Orissa with the specific purpose of wooing the Christian converts back to Hinduism. The murdered head of the ashram, Swami Lakshmananda Saraswati, was one of the leading figures engaged in the reconversions. Given the competitive nature of such missionary activity, with its focus on religion and education among simple-minded villagers in poverty-stricken areas, there is little chance of an improvement in the tension-ridden atmosphere in the near future if only because of the BJP's political and official clout as a part of the government. What is more, the VHP and the Bajrang Dal seem to have begun to act on their own not only in Orissa but also in Jammu where it is involved in the agitation on the Amarnath land transfer issue. The VHP was also involved in vandalising an exhibition of M.F.Husain's paintings in New Delhi while two Bajrang Dal activists were killed while making bombs in Kanpur a few days ago. There were reports following the deaths that the organisation was considering carrying out acts of terrorism against the minorities by Hindu volunteers. Only last June, Shiv Sena supremo Bal Thackeray had called for the formation of Hindu suicide squads. From Jammu to Orissa via New Delhi and Kanpur, the saffron lobby seems to have become more active than before. One reason is that the Amarnath issue has given it a chance to whip up xenophobic sentiments against the Kashmir separatists. The BJP and the Sangh Parivar have generally tended to be quiet about Kashmir, especially after Atal Bihari Vajpayee's initiatives regarding both Kashmir and Pakistan. But the Amarnath issue has given them an opportunity to unfurl the nationalistic agenda although the RSS and the VHP are seemingly wary of the BJP playing too active a role in Jammu. Orissa, on the other hand, has been a long-festering sore. A friendly administration there enables the Hindutva brigade to implement Item No. 2 on Guru Golwalkar's list which identifies the Christians as the country's second group of 'internal enemies', the Muslims being the first. Besides, in states like Kerala, Jharkhand or Nagaland, where there are a fair number of Christians, the BJP does not have much influence. When the saffron camp started its anti-Christian campaign in right earnest after coming to power at the centre in the late 1990s, it was discomfited by the fall in the percentage of Christians in India from 2.5 to 2.3. So, it began to spread the myth that there were crypto-Christians who hide their true religious commitments, apparently waiting to come out in the open when the time was ripe. According to the Hindutva group, the percentage would rise to 11 or 12 if these hidden elements were considered. One can understand from this absurd

[Goanet] Fw: Is this Raheja's Campaign?
Is this part of Raheja's Campaign? Dear Fellow Goans, The meeting of a gang of brick and mortar professionals with the government and their accusations against the people of Goa needs to be seriously viewed by the people. This slimy tribe now has the audacity to accuse the government of bowing down to public pressure and being totally blind to the trauma that the enterpreneurs are suffering due to the ongoing public outcry against ongoing / forthcoming projects. It is a clear case of thieves crying foul when they do not get their way around the police. For the last several years, taking the patronage of successive corrupt governments, these bullies have traumatised poor citizens into parting with their lands and used all foul means to subvert justice against gross illegalities and crime committed, even to the extent of terrorising vigilant citizens with goons. Now that they are at the receiving end they cry before the government and politely implore it to use its bully tactics and police machinery to crush people's resistance and subvert democracy in order to allow them free access to plunder. These are the very culprits who in their quest and greed for dollars and status have mercilessly plundered the ecology and livelihood of the goan people . These are the very scums who have successively used the politicians to illegally apply PDA building rules in Village Panchayat areas so that they can construct mega projects and commercial complexes. These are the professionals who never made a hue and cry about gross discrepancies in the planning and building norms and even raked up the Regional Plan 2011 issue just to free themselves from the grip of Babush Monserate and to stop the non-goan real estate lobby from entering Goa. This tribe should be tried in the international court for destroying the identity, peace, tranquility, sustainability and beauty of goan villages that has been literally tarnished with ugly monsters meant for migrants. These Babbar's and Hitler's of the modern economy now advise NGO's and social action groups on moderation when they themselves have failed to set an example in their profession. Taking advantage of the ignorance of the people these narkasurs have not even left a square inch of land as breathing space. What moral right do these dacoits in professional robes have to advise others about moderation? Goans should not take this lying down. Whether we embrace peace or whether we become violent, the end result is death both ways. The peace loving culture of goans has been abused and taken as a license by migrants and real estate sharks to conduct a silent and non-violent ethnic genocide against goans themselves in their own land. Cursed be their generations for this and we the people will not surrender our rights till our last breath. -Soter D'Souza

One wonders if these living in ivory towers in the west are not benumbed by white culture? Or do they still assiduously preserve their culture ie.: wearing khastis and roaming round Times Square in New York and eating pasta with their fingers? BC Dear UP Kamath, There is a lot of depth to what you say about Maglorean Catholic women. Again, splendid points UP. venantius j pinto

[Goanet] Recognition to the Roman Script
This has refrence to the outburst of Mr Pundalik Naik(President, Goa Konkani Akademi), on the subject of Recognition to the Roman Script,in The Navhind Times, of 27th August 2008(Language Issue). The outburst was totally uncalled for. It seems, Mr. Pundalik Naik is giving vent, to some sort of frustrations. Its difficult to say, what exactly is the cause of such frustration. We may come to some answers, only after we analyse, point by point, his senseless outburst. Point No.1:- Mr Pundalik Naik says that , at that time ie in 1987, it was the then Government's, as well as the Congress Party's decision, to do injustice to the lakhs of Roman Script users. Will the Government, or for that matter even the Congress Party, admit to what Mr Pundalik Naik is saying? Will they admit, that they are responsible for the Injustice? Let's suppose, they do. What Mr Pundalik Naik forgets, is that today, Mr Digamber Naik, is leading a co-alition Government, of several Parties, and not a Congress Government, any more. He has a responsibility, to carry with him all his co-alition partners. And he is doing just that. What the Congress Party's decision was in 1987, means nothing to him now, in the present circumstances. Point No.2:- In the same outburst, it is reported, that Mr Pundalik Naik, vehemently said that they would not allow any changes in the Official Language Act, that the Goa Konkani Akademi is there, to guide the Government on Konkani. This statement of Mr Pundalik Naik smacks of utter arrogance and insubordination. Is Mr Pundalik Naik, even authorized to make such a statement ? Who is the Chief Minister here ?, Digamber Kamat or Pundalik Naik? Digamber-bab, it seems Pundalik is growing too big for his boots. Point No.3:- Mr Pundalik Naik, further says, that around four years back they had taken a decision, to treat Roman Script at par with Devanagari Script, and that he has started implementing that decision. Where? When? How? Can Mr Pundalik Naik , tell us exactly how, he has implemented that decision ? Or is it that, you dont know the real meaning of at par. If you do not know, let me tell you. It means, using 50% of the GKA budget to promote Konkani in Roman Script. Have you done that ? It means, Government is willing to give grants to schools teaching Konkani in the Roman Script. Is this being done ? It means, all correspondence to Government Departments, sent in Roman Script, is being replied also, in the Roman Script. Is this being done ? It means knowledge of Konkani in Roman Script, makes Goans eligible for any Government Job . Is this being done ? Then, what is that at par that you are talking about? Mr Pundalik Naik , your outburst is nothing but frustration. Frustration , because recognition to Roman Script will make you loose power you don't want to loose it. You want to have a false control, over the Konkani-speaking people. You back-stabbed the Roman Script users, by using them during the Language Agitation. You told them don't raise the script issue now, we assure you, both the scripts will get equal recognition, no sooner Konkani enters the VIIIth Schedule. Is it not? Where is that assurance now, Mr Pundalik Naik ? Twenty one years have passed. No sign. Goans have, now, come to know of your, hidden agenda. You wont be able to fool them, any more. Roman Script has to happen, and it will happen. Even hundred Pundaliks, will no be able to stop it. Wilmix Wilson Mazarello (Convenor, Romi Lipi Action Front)
