I think Selma probably misunderstood the context of Cecil's post, and its true intent. While Fred is an eminent Journalist with a huge presence on the Internet, Cecil's customary style is to have a go at him every now and then. Cecil picks up a raging issue, adds his own two bits of humor to it and throws in Fred for a measure or two. Fred does not mind all this, for it gives him a lot of free publicity. Sometimes, Fred does try to hit back and hold his own. There are times when he has succeeded, there are times when he hasn't. To the innocent bystander, it would appear as though the two are the greatest of enemies but in reality the two are great friends and have huge mutual respect for each other. Their verbal duels are archived in other forums and should be taken with a tinge of humour and a grain of salt. They are all in good fun and spirit. Though Cecil's post may have had some element of truth in the background (by Fred's own admission), it was meant to be a tongue-in-cheek response, for a few grins only and not to be taken too seriously. While Selma is all upset and jittery, Cecil and Fred must be having a good hearty laugh over this! Cheers, Sandeep
[Goanet] Our Mothers are crying, Can we make a PEACE bomb instead...
On Sun, 28 Sep 2008 07:49:19 +, mario rodrigues [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote on the Subject: [Goanet] Our Mothers are crying, Can we make a PEACE bomb instead!!!: The TERROR hearted men now uses tiffin boxes to shorten innocent lifes and earn his reward from the terror boss and lives his future, scott free. Whereas the 9 year old sweetheart boy who loved to carry tiffin boxes to school to make his future, perishes doing an act of kindness. 9 year old sweethearts mother cries for no fault of hers nor was it the fault of her loving child. And the mother of the terror hearted also cries for giving birth to a sweetheart who has now turned terror man. Its always the mothers have to suffer inspite of the 9 months pains and agony to bring them to this world. I am so disturbed that I don?t know what must be going through the minds of those millions of children when they open their tiffin boxes to eat their snacks/food during recess time. What must be going through the minds of thousands of tiffinwallas in Mumbai who from early morning ensure that the tiffin boxes reach the office goers offices? What must be going through the minds of all mothers , fathers , husbands, wifes, people who make food at our home, restaurants while they fill the tiffin boxes for their loved ones? 11 people play for India and earn millions while our army which is around 1.1million who has vowed to protect India are now making headlines because of low pay scales. I think the management of IPL should take over the army thereby India can dream of winning this WAR ON TERROR. We know from below question that usually the fathers are good: What father among you, if his son asks for bread, would give him a stone, or if he asks for a fish, would give him a snake instead of the fish? But sadly I now know that TERROR hearted fathers do exists in this world, many now in India, who keeps a BOMB in a tiffin box instead of chocolates. I feel disgusted by the facts that this explosion is termed as a mild explosion. How can anyone make such a statement. Even if no person is hurt by an explosion the people with concern(those whom we voted in and also those who were voted out) should leave their selfish differences and should join hands to ensure noone ever gets hurt. This is what our goals should be. What is happening now because of so many blasts/crimes/attacks taking place so frequently is that we wake up only if many people die or if there is a big explosion or if many places of worship destroyed or many people are burned/living in fear. God, we have become so thick skinned, people without compassion. We are used to seeing other peoples relatives, child, friend die not knowing that death comes like a thief and this thief might be just outside our doors. We have to leave aside our egos, dreams, aspirations and work towards nabbing these terror hearted before they put an end to us. I hate those countries who invented the BOMB. It would have put an early end to world war 2 and would have saved many lifes(American), but sadly this very bomb has destroyed and is destroying and would continue to destroy many many more innocent lives and can even trigger a much devastating world war III. The BOMB the BOMBER needs to be BOMBED, peacefully. Can we make a PEACE BOMB, instead? Mario Andrew Rodrigues _ My dear Mario, I totally agree with you on the above. My hate and disgust for people who terminate the lives of other people for no fault of theirs cannot be expressed. I am in total agreement with you on your above sentiments. May God Bless everyone and cure the world of the ills that plague the minds of the fanatics. Agnelo Fernandes
[Goanet] Waiting for Goa to ROCK ON
Waiting for Goa to ROCK ON By Sujay Gupta The search for the sounds of music of the Goa of old, often ends in the labyrinth of lanes in the gaunthans (villages) of Mumbai. Behind the quaint facades of houses with tiled roofs, wicker gates, wooden doors and red floors, of villages such as Pali, in Bandra, strains of Chuk Noris and Chuk Perry, Perry Como and our very own Remo, Larua Brannigan and the Goan Lorna, are heard. A medley of voices and cultures, not heard on a long playing record or a CD, but performed in living rooms and bedrooms by sons and daughters, who have grown up hearing their parents sing or play. This is the kind of music which is dying, consumed by downloads and ipods, far from an age where a storage device meant big fat books of musical notes and a natural memory bank. Sadly, a lot of that is preserved in close knit Goan and east Indian communities in Mumbai- and I have been fortunate to sample their musical flavours over the years- but has fast vanished from the vados and tintos of Goa. An old Goan Mumbai buddy was on a flashback mode recently in one of our beloved Irani cafes in Matunga in Central Mumbai. He said As recently as the late nineties, when you walked down any lane in a Salcette village, you could hear a song, a guitar playing, a drum beating or a flute serenading anyone who cared to listen, from almost every home in the lane. As he spoke I imagined music cascading out of the windows and the fields like a wave, its notes like a froth exploding as the waters hit jagged rocks, soft instrumental notes of Bethoven- quiet and unobtrusive, like a nun on her way to church, or the pure joyous loud beats of the percussion-complete with the clash of cymbals, much like the chanting of the village football team fresh from a victory in the local village league. That was then. And that is not now. It's a lament of many who lived, loved and died with these songs, performed by impromptu family bands with dad on the lead guitar, the son and daughter on vocals, and another brother on the drums. And the mom, as back up vocals or as a critical member of the family choir. As dear friend Alex Baraganza, often tells me (and out of a sense of genuine responsibility and nothing else), that while DJ's and RJ's have added to the musical experience, it has not necessarily complimented natural music, but actually taken it away. This isn't about wrong or right, but while celeb DJ's in night clubs may alight parties and liquor sales, the natural sounds of a chord being pulled, a drum stick being rolled or a flute being played, are dying at the altar of remix and techno sound. This may not necessarily be evil. But it sure is sad. The sense of deep loss can be felt when all of us ask ourselves some questions. Is there a single Goan music band which ranks even in the top twenty bands of the country? When was the last time an all Goan band cut a successful album? When was the last time one of Goas best known singers Remo Fernandes last sing a hit single that was on everyone's lips. Taking nothing away from a lot of Goan kids who have gone on to become DJ's or RJ's in major radio networks, there is a tinge of sadness, whe you know that at least one young singer with a divine voice, spends time introducing songs and topics in a radio station which plays predominantly hindi music, when she could very well be a w,onderful lead vocalist in any band. Well, it's all about choices and careers, but the music is dying. Nostalgia always needs triggers. And this time there was a trifle unusual one. The latest cult hindi movie Rock On. Of how four buddies of band called Magik, did just that till the pressures of family, time and livelihoods forced the Magik to die, till a decade later when they all come back to create the same thrill, aura and yes magic with a capital M. Songs and song players never die or fade, till they don't lose the will to do so. Here's to a time, when melodies will ring again, when the songs of Christmas, birthdays and any celebration will be sung by house bands, to a time when house music will means music composed by members of the house, to an age when music will once again be played by instruments and nor programmed. Rock On, stirs. And reminds us of the joys of the brotherhood of bands and the cosmos of natural music. And perhaps gives us hope, that Goas next national band, is waiting to be born. ROCK ON! http://goaunltd.com/?p=535 Goanet AE - http://www.goanet.org
[Goanet] Carriers queue up to develop cargo hubs [ET]
Domestic carriers queue up to develop dedicated cargo hubs http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/News/News_By_Industry/Transportation/Air lines__Aviation/Domestic_carriers_queue_up_to_develop_dedicated_cargo_hubs/a rticleshow/3537757.cms Kingfisher Airlines is looking at Goa and Banglaore as potential locations while Jet Airways is eyeing at Hyderabad and Bangalore. National Aviation Company of India (NACIL), in which Indian Airlines and Air India have merged, was originally looking at Nagpur, but the state-run airline is also looking at other centres including Delhi. Deccan Cargo Express Logistics Private Limited has already zeroed in at Nagpur. Capt Gopinath's Deccan has signed a memorandum of understanding with state government authorities to develop its cargo hub. Carriers such as SpiceJet and IndiGo are also in the process of identifying locations for their cargo hubs. GoAir has also plans to start dedicated cargo airline based out of Mumbai. According to Tulsi Nowlakha Mirchandaney, managing director, Blue Dart Aviation, the economy is primarily driven by domestic consumption and therefore, the hub selection should be based on that. She said Chennai and Mumbai have potential to become as cargo hubs. Industry sources said the air cargo is growing faster (19%) than shipping (10%) and railways (9%). With shrinking passenger volumes and steady demand for air cargo, airlines are looking to bolster their cargo operations by setting up separate cargo airlines to serve the growing market. Airlines are hiring specialized staff for their cargo operations and are also considering the conversion of passenger airplanes into freighter airplanes into freighter aircraft, said Ernst Young report on aviation titled The tough will get going - New paradigms for success in Indian aviation. The report said the impact of rising costs on air cargo volumes has not been drastic. This is largely due to the non-availability of close substitutes of the air cargo services. Additionally, airlines, which are incurring huge losses due to decrease in passenger traffic, can diversify their revenue bases by ramping up their cargo operations, the report pointed out. An airline official said the carriers are busy in finding locations for their cargo hubs as they have realized that cargo revenues will become one of the main stays for an airline in the coming days. These centres will act as a sorting warehouses and cargo will be allocated according to various airports. Airlines are also developing capabilities to handle perishable cargo, he said. The potential of air freight cargo in the country is huge, considering that India currently moves only 1% of this freight by air, as opposed to the global average of 2%, according the Ernst Young report. The country's air freight is expected to grow at a CAGR of 11.6%, with the growth in international air freight set to outpace growth in domestic volumes by almost 2% on an average, it said. Besides scheduled carriers, as is reported in these pages earlier, other Indian companies are looking to tap the growing demand for movement of cargo by air. Domestic freight traffic increased to 423.43 tonne between April and December, up 8.1% from a year ago, according to Airports Authority of India (AAI). Bangalore-based Quikjet Cargo Airlines, Hyderabad-based Flyington Freighters, Mumbai-based Avicore Aviation and New Delhi-based Aryan Cargo Express are also drawing up plans to enter the market. Its good to know that somebody is thinking of Goa as an air cargo hub. The problem is to sort out the potentials in this business as between Dabolim civil enclave and Mopa airport. There should be a clear demarcation of roles as to primary or secondary. This in turn will have to be based on the roles envisaged for the two airports as a whole. The roles have to be set for 5-10 years from the start of Mopa operations. The design and phasing of Mopa will depend on this as will financing and ownership stakes. The Goa govt has to get up to speed quickly in aviation matters instead of thinking that it doesnt have to do much and can relax. The long term future of Goa is inextricably tied to aviation decisions and they cannot be abdicated without putting it (Goa's future) at serious risk.
[Goanet] Fw: PRESS NOTE FOR KIND FAVOUR OF PUBLICATION - Thank You.
- Original Message - From: floriano To: Dainik Gomantak Sent: Monday, September 29, 2008 10:45 AM Subject: PRESS NOTE FOR KIND FAVOUR OF PUBLICATION - Thank You. September 29, 2008 To, The Editor, Sir, Subject: Growing influence of Electoral Politics on RELIGION and EDUCATION. We, at Goa Su-Raj Party are watching with keen interest the on-going controversy that the Goa University has been embroiled in vis a vis the 'Student Council Elections. We do hope that better sense will prevail out of this fracas on the Goa University authorities, and even more so at the Central level, to completely ban the University/College 'Student Council Elections' being fought on political party lines. We, at Goa Su-Raj Party have always felt that there are two things that should not mix with electoral politics. These are (1) Religion and (2) Education. For our part, the Goa Su-Raj Party is determined to put a stop at Goa-level for the road-side politics to creep into the sanctum sanctorum of 'Religion' and 'Education' departments. Furthermore, we at Goa Su-Raj Party are encouraged by the general mindset of Goans as voiced in the VOX GOENKAR' of the Gomantak Times (September 29, 2008). We, at Goa Su-Raj Party are of the qualified belief that the Central Political Authorities as well as the Supreme Court of India must step in to stem the ever growing electoral political influence over Religion and Education in order to put an end to experiences that have left soured the national image vis a vis incidents such as the demolition of Babri Masjid at Ayodhya and the sad demise of Prof. Sabarwal, a few years ago, at the university campus in Madhya Pradesh. Thank you. Sd/- (Floriano Lobo) Gen. Secretary/Spokesperson Goa Su-Raj Party H.O. 383 A, Pirazona, Moira, Bardez -Goa (403 507) Tel: (M) 9890470896 PS: This Press Note has been sent to all Newspapers.

Selma concludes with: In keeping with this custom, a group of men who seem wordily-wise will gather and create a conspiracy so great and chiseled, even Ian Fleming would have been impressed. Before we know it, not only is the efficiency of the person called into question, based on his political leanings but his moral efficacy as well. Pretty soon, we shall hear that FN has hatched a plot in collusion with the Chinese to systematically stem out right-wing ideology from Goanet. I have no wish to join this lunar-festivity on Goanet. To FN, I can only say this too will pass. Soon, these men will tire of this game. I'm only sorry that your reputation will get dragged through the mud while they are at it. It is easy to forget the 14 years of hard-work you have dedicated to this site. It's also easy to forget that you are one person who is always there to help someone out, should that person need your help. Not that I'm trying to canonizing you or anything, but there it is, for what it's worth. Difficult really to add anything on this pointless discussion...such a bloody waste of time, such unnecessary distraction. I've just read Miguel Braganza's wonderful piece shredding the Regional Plan. People, shouldn't we be getting exercised about larger issues here and keep our nit-picking under tighter control? From a cute, countryside airport into a bustling international hub, one of the few profitable ones! [Goanet] NIGHT OF THE LONG KNIVES: WHEN THE GOA EDITORS GUILD WENT PENPRICKS HUNTING
Hi, We ran a post sometime back telling our readers, how the Goa Editor's Guild which met on July 11, 2008 at the Goa Marriott Resort, contemplated the extermination of our blog www.penpricks.blogspot.com Here's a scanned hard copy of the invite dispatched to the rest of the editors in Goa by the Guild's chairman Arun Sinha. The point we are concerned about, is the second one on the agenda, where Arun Sinha wants the editors in the guild to 'discuss' the 'tirade' against guild members by blog spot Pen Pricks. Sinha wanted to fire at us, using the collective bulk of the guild-member's shoulders to steady his rifle. Read the last para. Sinha wanted have a 'collective decision on the above-mentioned issues' Don't ask us how we got hold of the copy. We aren't gonna tell, but one thing's pretty clear guys. 2008/9/29 Sandeep Heble [EMAIL PROTECTED]: I think Selma probably misunderstood the context of Cecil's post, and its true intent. Since it has come to this, let me speak out here... Just to say Sandeep's interpretation isn't quite true. Actually, it couldn't be further from the truth. I don't mind a joke (or many jokes) at my cost, sometime joke at my own cost myself, and believe that people who take public positions (including journalsts) are open to be publicly criticised, and held accountable. But I resent the fact that: * Some people in cyberspace believe that growth for themselves can come primarily by pulling down others. * This is achieved by half-truths and total lies being passed around as humour. In the case of Cecil, this is not the first time it has been happening with me. A few years back, apparently on being misguided by someone with some professional rivalry, Cecil and a few others made (or helped to circulate, by persistently keeping it under discussion) a series of scurrilous allegations against me. I was then supposed to have manipulated in a behind-the-scenes-manner to shift the online website of the Goa Today magazine from the Goa-World website to Goacom.com. These allegations went on for a good year-and-half, and resulted in a lot of intrigue, denials and claims, and bitterness. It also cost me my friendship with people I had worked with for years prior. Further, when people see allegations against anyone in cyberspace, it's easy to pile on and add to the insinuations (as Ralph Rau has done in the recent case ... my contributions to Goanet don't rise because I block others, they come out just because of the hours and hours spent online) regardless of the fictional basis of the original allegation. As Selma has suggested, this becomes a kind of hunting sport in itself. After 18 months, it was found out that the allegation was a complete hoax, and a figment of someone's imagination. Cecil muttered some kind of apology... but what's the point? The damage was already done! My relations with friends of many years earlier were ruined. People saw me as a manipulative, cunning personality. My equation with Goa Today soured for awhile (a column on Goa and Goans in cyberspace stopped ... ) While I have worked with Cecil in the past (before and after our public spats), I am seriously perturbed about the kind of humour that is used as a tool to target individuals, with falsehoods passed off tongue in cheek writing. I've been the target of this more than once, and it is far from funny, I could tell you. (Maybe I need to get together with Remo Fernandes and form a Victims of Cecil's Writings Society!) Sandeep, I would like to know from you how you would feel if you were dealing with a few hundred people, most of whom have never met or seen you, largely go by what they read about you online, and then find that you are caught up in some huge controversy. Of course, nothing about the controversy is true, but everyone makes allegations with a lot of vehemence... making it seem Interesting, http://groups.yahoo.com/group/GoenchimXapotam/ after stoking up all the initial trouble, and instigating one another, seems to be particularly silent at this point of time! I would urge those interested in this issue (yawn!) to check out the quality of discussions being promoted on a list where insulting the next person down the street seems to be the best kind of values to be promoted in cyberspace. The real test of this entire issue of course faces someone like Dr Cornel Da Costa, who accuses me of promoting corruption on the basis of what now turns out to be a tongue-in-cheek and humour article! So far, the long-time sociologist and researcher, who ought to have known better, has just skirted the issue that his entire set of allegations against someone is based on untruth and humour. I don't expect an apology, but just an

[Goanet] The Acrid Stench of Death
This article is from the blog res gestae (www.rajivndesai.blogspot.com http://www.rajivndesai.blogspot.com/ ) you can reach the person managing the list at [EMAIL PROTECTED] Monday, September 22, 2008 The http://rajivndesai.blogspot.com/2008/09/acrid-stench-of-death_22.html Acrid Stench of Death Grief Eases, the Smell Lingers On September 21, my mother would have turned 86. She died five months ago. But lest anyone thinks this another obituary, I want to make it perfectly clear that it is not. Rather I want to talk about the phenomenon of death and how it hits you in the face, even while you are busy making a life. To begin with, there's no escaping it. We are all on some supernatural death row from the minute we are born. Certainly, we give our lives meaning. We do amazing things: we build nations, machines, welfare systems, philanthropic organizations; we do astounding research in medicine, physics, chemistry; we sing songs, play guitar and make it snappy; we write symphonies and operas, novels, poetry, even columns like this one. It is our only shot at immortality. Buried, burned or otherwise disposed off, our mortal coil is just that: mortal. Remember the root of the word is Latin for death. It's not my intent to be a Woody Allen and obsess about death. We don't need that because the fear of death is programmed into our DNA. We eat healthy, we work out; we give up cigarettes, booze and the libertine lifestyle. All in the hope we get a few years more on this planet. That desire drives people who live in sylvan estates or in deplorable slums; the investment banker who lives on 95 and Fifth in Manhattan as well the tribal in basic Africa; the person on a luxury yacht in the Mediterranean as well the illegal immigrant stowing away on a cargo ship. Nobody told me that death is the only certainty in life for all the years I spent in respectable educational institutions. In school, there was an unstated belief in God that the Jesuits pushed; university life was girded by the Calvinist ethic of hard work, burning the midnight oil. After that, the job was the Holy Grail. You must find one, keep one and rise in the ranks. Better homes, nicer cars, club memberships, business class travel and various other diversions take your mind off from the inevitability of death. So we build the tangled web of ambition and relationships. It diverts our minds, stuck as we are on this wonderful death row that we call life. I have a sunny disposition like Louis Armstrong, who in 1967 sang What a Wonderful World, a song that was written for him by the legendary jazz impresario Bob Thiele. Its opening lyrics went like this: I see trees of green, red roses too See them bloom for me and you And I think to myself what a wonderful world I see skies of blue, and clouds of white The bright blessed day, the dark sacred night And I think to myself what a wonderful world We enjoy this world: springtime in Chicago, autumn in New England, a night in Manhattan, a drive on Pacific Coast Highway from San Francisco to Los Angeles, (corny though it sounds) an evening in Paris, a drive through the English and French countryside, a Beatles number, an Ellington tune or some good old Hindi songs by Rafi, Kishore, Mukesh or Geeta Dutt; even more mundane experiences like a drink at the retro bar in the air force station in Ayanagar on the Delhi-Gurgaon border, dinner with friends in Bandra, a singsong at our house, a great movie, a good concert, an absorbing play, a stirring opera. And for many of us, the satisfaction of work and the concomitant rewards, both spiritual and material. My personal preference remains Goa in the Monsoon. There are trees of green and flowers too. But the skies are grey; the clouds are black and ominous; the night is indeed sacred and dark with sheets of rain and gale force winds. Contemplating the violence of nature, I am reminded that we are mortals and we can be swept away by the sinister forces of nature. These experiences define our lives. Otherwise there is a void, a few lonely years in a death watch cell. We seek love and solace. When we get that, we are immortal; others want more and they are Shakespeare, Blake, DaVinci, Einstein, Gaugin, Van Gogh, Mozart, Beethoven, Edison, Burke, Jefferson, Voltaire, Freud, Marx, Gates or any of the IT pioneers. People like them advance civilization. The rest of us just enjoy the fruits of their genius. In the end, there is no greater comfort and joy than sharing a daily dinner table, a weekend lunch in the garden or Christmas with the family. These experiences run for a good 50 years or so in an individual's life until the children, both us and ours, grow up and move away, sometimes physically but always emotionally. We enjoy it while we can and then contemplate the sunset years. Some of us are lucky to have friends to brighten up our evenings and weekends; and work to keep us busy through the day. Into this cocoon of happiness that we build and protect,

[Goanet] 'Faith in God can relieve pain'
Here is an interesting article on Faith vs Science 'Faith in God can relieve pain' (Times of India dt 29.9.2008) LONDON: Religion is the opiate of the people - Karl Marx had famously said. But can one's faith in God really ease pain? Yes, say scientists. SPAN A team at Oxford University has based its findings on an experiment in which 12 Roman Catholics and 12 atheists were tortured with electric shocks as they studied two paintings - Virgin Mary and Leonardo da Vinci's Lady With An Ermine. The subjects spent half-an-hour inside an MRI scanner, receiving a series of 20 electric shocks in four sessions and each time they had to rate how much it hurt on a scale of 0 to 100 as they looked at the paintings. The researchers hoped that the face of the Virgin Mary would induce a religious state of mind in the believers, while da Vinci's painting was chosen because it did not look dissimilar and would be calming. The scientists found that the Catholics seemed to be able to block out much of the pain. And, using the latest brain-scanning techniques, they also discovered that the Catholics were able to activate part of the brain associated with conditioning experience of pain, the Daily Mail reported. However, there was no such brain activity among the atheists whose pain and anxiety levels stayed roughly the same. The Catholics said that looking at the painting of the Virgin Mary made them feel safe, taken care of and calmed down and peaceful. More significantly, they reported feeling 12% less pain after viewing the religious image than after looking at the Leonardo. The Rt Rev Tom Wright, the Anglican Bishop of Durham, welcomed the research, saying: The practice of faith should, and in many cases does, alter the person you are. It can affect the patterns of your brain and your emotions. So it comes as no surprise to me that this experiment has reached such conclusions. -- Will the all new Indica Vista zip ahead of the Suzuki Swift? We never expected this to happen to us, is what several of you have been saying. Many others added and we were totally unprepared. During the days there, I experienced the pain and suffering of several of the victims: those who were in the midst of teargas, those who were beaten up and brutalized by the brute force and insensitivity of the police, and even of those who spent some days in jail or police custody. The underlying feeling throughout was, this violence was just too terrible for words. It was also heartwarming to know how several of you literally stood firm to protect the Church and Church property. I have been tremendously edified by the heroics of many women (very specially religious sisters) who boldly faced the onslaught of violence. I was touched by the fact that several youth went to jail for no wrongdoing whatsoever, but only because their names were handed over to the police officers, who demanded that this be done. I salute each one of you who have exemplified faith, courage and dignity to preserve the diversity and the secular fabric of our country. Having said this, I need to share with you some of my reflections on the current happenings in Mangalore and other parts of Karnataka. What I write here is essentially based on the sharing of many and in no way should be misconstrued as final words. I also share them because as a citizen of India , I feel I have a responsibility to do so: The attacks on Churches and Christians is not a one off affair. It is part of a systematic long term project of the Sangh Parivar, who have an insidious, divisive agenda based on a fascist ideology. During these attacks, the fascists have effectively used age old tactics like hit and run, divide- and-rule (it's not you but they), diverting-from-the-real-issue (illegal conversion, foreign funds, etc.) It is blatantly obvious that they have trapped us in their subterfuge. We have fallen prey to their evil designs. What perhaps went awry, in their plans, was the groundswell of response, from the Catholic laity, very specially the youth. This spontaneous response, both, on September 14 and 15, certainly put them on the back foot. The ringing of Church bells was a terrific strategy used on the part of the Catholics on both days. In doing so, we were reminded that God is with us and that we need to come together and remain united in the face of crisis. (At times during the Nazi regime, the Resistance Movements in parts of France also used to ring the Church bells in times of danger). The Police had no business to enter Church property, and very specially the sacred precincts of our Churches. There is enough of documentary evidence to show how police have beaten up and brutalized people even inside Churches and severely damaged Church property. No acts of violence can and should be justified. However, it is anyone's guess as to who threw the first stone and to what extent were the Catholic youth actually involved in stone throwing. In some parishes, the police asked for a list of names of youth who they could arrest, and unfortunately, these were given, even when the youth were just sitting silently in the Church compound. On the very first day, members of the Sangh Parivar took responsibility for the attacks. This would not have been possible if they did not have the full patronage of the State Government and the support of BJP higher-ups. Government officials and police, clearly acted as footstools for the whims and fancies of their political masters. A few days before these attacks, a highly inflammatory and defamatory booklet was printed and distributed outside the gates of several educational institutions in Mangalore. The booklet held the Christians responsible for the killing of the Swami in Orissa. The police did nothing to stop those responsible for the publishing and distribution of this booklet. The Sangh Parivar with all its affiliates, is a fascist organization. They are out to destroy the secular fabric of the country. They do not represent the vast majority of the Hindus of the country. It is dangerous and absolutely immoral, to enter into any negotiations or deals with them. When one does so, one provides them a legitimacy which they desperately hanker for. Above all,
[Goanet] Loyola High School Margao Presents Live Gospel Music.
From: Francisca [EMAIL PROTECTED] Recently our school presented a live Gospel Music show at Gomantak V. Nikaten Margao . I have prepared the report of the same. God bless You Regards Francisca Loyola High School Margao Presented Live Gospel Music. By Francisca Fatima Da Costa St. Ignatius always wanted to do more and more. So is Fr. Cedric Fernandes the V. Principal of Loyola High School who leads the school Choir along with Mr. Rene Mesquita enjoys bringing out the hidden talents of the boys to sing. This time both of them presented the live Gospel Music show which was held on 18th Sept at Gomantak Vidya Niketan Hall Margao. It was their dream come true with a caste of 45 boys on stage displaying their musical talent to the people in and around Margao. It is said practice makes a man perfect and also one cannot work wonders overnight, Fr. Cedric and Mr. Rene worked very hard to make the show a grand success. Around 700 people attended the show that began at sharp 5:30 pm by Mr. Rene Mesquita who spoke on God's creation. In his introduction he explained when God created the universe the earth was formless and desolated. The ocean was in total darkness. The power of God was moving over the water and later God commanded light, and the light appeared. Then he commanded let there be dome to divide the water and to keep it in two separate places. So God made a dome and it separated the water under it from the water above it. He named the dome sky. Later the water was brought together and was named sea. Next few days God added beautiful things one by one to the world. Thus showing his love for us. A Powerpoint presentation was put up on the gaint screen based on God's creation. Each slide demonstrating Gods creation from the darkness to the water, the land, the trees and the birds. The show consists of 15 hymns. Loyola is a boys high School but the audience were surprised to see pretty little girls on the stage. They were none other than our own boys dressed as girls. Thus doing justice to their role. The first hymn was on Gods creation. It emphasized how God created everything for our good. Simultaneously slides were shown for the first hymn on different things like the sky, stars, rain, moon, birds, bees, hills, streams, musical instruments, little children, men, women and the natural beauty around us. Each hymn had a special message. Introduction was given before every hymn. The boys also enacted some of the scenes thus bringing out the true meaning of the hymns. God has created us in his own image and likeness. But what did man do? Man embraced and enjoyed sin, injustice and hatred. But God did not forsake us. He sent his only son Jesus to free us, Jesus went to the cross, bled and died for us and saved all mankind. We are often carrying heavy loads of sorrows, and all trials come our way but one hymn made us realize how to trust the Lord who has promised to come again to take away all our tears and sorrows. All we have to do is trust the Lord and be born again which means repent and wait patiently to receive the Lords blessings. Some hymns were really touching where the boys enacted the scenes how to share with the poor and the needy. The message was the more we give to others the more we shall receive. A smile also is a precious gift from God. A smile can make someone happy. So chase away your frown. Help some one with your smile. It doesn't cost to smile so keep smiling. God has made us so wonderfully and so beautifully each one a unique piece of his art. Do not judge and condemn others and you will not be judged. Let not your anger block Gods love. So open up your hearts to receive his love. Jesus said come to me all who are weary and tired. So cast your burden unto him and he will give you rest. You can ease the pain of your brother by showing him a little kindness by helping him. Jesus is the Rock and nothing should keep you away from him. Even if you have nothing in your pocket do not be afraid. Silver and gold is not required to get eternal peace, all we need is to be pure in heart. All we need is only to trust him and he will take you to heaven. A place which will take away your pains, sorrows and troubles. So you need to always give glory and praise to him because he loves you. These were the powerful and interesting messages from all the 15 hymns. Speaking on the occasion Principal of the school Fr. William Rodrigues said God can touch us anywhere it need not be at Pilgrim places only. Throughout the show Fr. Cedric and Mr. Rene kept the show lively by singing with the boys on the stage and among the audience. The audience too were very enthusiastic. They joined the singing along with the students on the stage as the lyrics were displayed on the screen. This made the show a very lively one. The audience applauded at every hymn. The Powerpoint presentation was prepared by Ms Francisca Da Costa. She along with Mr. Wilson Fernandes displayed the lyrics
Re: [Goanet] What To Do In Falling Markets - Off topic
Mario Goveia wrote: Folks, as a general rule, I never have a problem with a recommendation if the person is following his or her own recommendations. That's the only true test of whether someone is serious about their recommendations. If they are not, then they're simply bloviating and their recommendations are meaningless. Date: Fri, 26 Sep 2008 20:30:18 -0700 (PDT) From: Mervyn Lobo [EMAIL PROTECTED] Folks, I can assure everyone here that Mario's house was down wind from the Toledo Zoo today as this post of his reflects the stink. For the third time Mario, take a look at the title of the post and try and contribute to a debate rather than take away from it. Mario responds: Anyone who has followed this thread and other Off-topic threads initiated by Mervyn would know that they need to hang on to their wallets when he assures them of anything, recently assuring them that the price of gold would hit $1,650, but who really knows when:-)) He also assured everyone that the US is like the USSR and the Weimar Republic. This is akin to saying that countries Mervyn admires, like China, Zimbabwe, Cuba and N. Korea are all democracies because they hold elections:-)) Tsk, tsk, tsk. My comment shown above meant that a person's financial advice is simply bogus unless he shows he is serious by following his own advice. We see that Mervyn has ducked the question entirely, referring instead to some Zoo whose stink he seems very familiar with:-)) There is no Zoo in the city where I live, but there is one in the city where Mervyn lives:-)). Mervyn wrote: Every time I point this out, people search the Goanet archives for my recommendations and then tell me, we should have? listened to you much earlier on. Mario asks: We have no way of knowing what anyone tells Mervyn. But we do know from Goanet that some Goanetters bought gold at $1,000 per ounce on Mervyn's recommendation. I wonder if others are now saying we should have listened to you now that gold is at $870 per ounce:-)) When I brought this to his attention Mervyn's response was that anyone who follows his advice on the internet needed to have their heads examined, or deserved their fate or some such cynical comment. I don't know how he reconciles that with what he is writing in this post. If you ask me, he often does not remember what he has written previously. Mervyn's claim to fame is that he bought a boatload of gold at its low point of $280 per ounce. When Roland asked how he figured out that $280 per ounce would be the low point, we got three separate answers in serial order, which can all be found in the Goanet archives, which I am paraphrasing below: a) Easy, Mervyn said. Anyone could do it by looking at historical 15 and 20 year price charts. This was said in 2008. The problem became how looking at price charts in 2008 would lead to a decision to buy gold at $280 per ounce between 1996 to 2001, before which the price had declined steadily for several years. He was asked to try again. b) Easy, Mervyn said, unfazed that his earlier explanation made no sense. His second explanation was that he bought gold when he heard that the central bankers, who are all idiots according to Mervyn, were selling gold. Somehow that signaled to him that he should be buying gold. The problem became that if central bankers started selling gold when it was $280 per ounce, it would have declined further. In fact the price of gold held steady from 1996 to 2001 at around $280 per ounce and then increased steadily as the US devalued its currency. This was brought to his notice and he was asked to try once more. c) Easy, Mervyn said, still unfazed by his previous two explanations that made no sense. His third explanation was that he knew all this because he worked harder than anyone else. Ask anyone in Kenya, he said, where he was famous for catching more lobsters than anyone else by working hard. My paraphrased response to all this was If you are making lots of money by buying gold, good for you. I don't care if you used all these methods or not, or threw darts at a dartboard, as long as you are following your own advice while recommending it to others in gratuitous Off-topic posts now being blamed on Bosco. If you are, I have no problem; if not, your self-proclaimed perspicacity is little more than hot air. Mervyn wrote: The one thing my friends and the strangers have in common is that, with experience, they now know when they see something worth reading. Mario responds: My personal emails confirm that many on Goanet are chuckling at Mervyn's attempts at being Goanet's financial adviser. With all the different things he has written and his distorted and selective comments about the US economy and how the US is organized, how is anyone to know which version to believe or even what to believe? I have had to correct Mervyn's understanding of the US time and time again,
[Goanet] BOOKS: Actor Tom Alter and architect Dean D'Cruz launch Once Upon a Time in Aparanta in Mumbai
Actor Tom Alter and architect Dean D'Cruz launch Once Upon a Time in Aparanta in Mumbai 'Aparanta is a Goa Bachao Abhiyan book' —Dean D'Cruz 'The plight of Goa today reminds me of Mussoorie some years ago' —Tom Alter From Rachna Kalra [EMAIL PROTECTED] Mumbai, 29 September 2008: Once Upon a Time in Aparanta, the new novel by Sudeep Chakravarti, was released in Mumbai last Friday. The event was held at Crossword Kemps Corner on 26 September and attended by a mix of Crossword regulars and booklovers, among them Goans resident in Mumbai, and expatriates. The highlight of the launch was the reading from the novel by well-known theatre and film actor Tom Alter, and the presence of well-known architect and activist Dean D'Cruz. While Mr Alter kept the audience spellbound, Mr D'Cruz forcefully conveyed his thoughts about the present and likely future of the state in which Once Upon a Time in Aparanta is based. 'The present and future of Goa is under great pressure,' said Mr D'Cruz. He added, 'Politics and greed drives this pressure. Many of yesterday's small-time goons are today's leaders.' He thereafter elaborated on the vision of the Regional Plan 2021 and its portents for Goa, and the true purpose of the movement initiated by group Goa Bachao Abhiyan, of which he is a key participant. In this context, Mr D'Cruz lightheartedly called Once Upon a Time in Aparanta a 'Goa Bachao Abhiyan book', as the novel is set in the churn of present-day Goa. In a similar vein, he added, 'For me a good Goan is someone who has Goa in his heart, and by this yardstick, Sudeep is Goan.' Mr Alter, after reading from the novel, joined the discussion. He spoke passionately about Once Upon a Time in Aparanta representing the key thought that concerns a society in churn, as well as concerns of ecology and sustainable development. Mr Alter said Goa's plight reminds him of the time when his former home, Mussoorie, was 'under attack', and the hillsides on the way from Dehradun to Mussoorie 'totally denuded' by mines and quarries. A majority of these mines were pressured to close, he said, and public action has ensured strict zoning, building regulation and protection of greenery in Mussoorie. 'Not a single tree can now be cut down in Mussoorie,' Mr Alter said. 'And the hillsides between Dehradun and Mussourie are now green with trees.' The author agreed with these observations, stressing that his latest work of fiction is based on his learning of Goa largely from the people of Goa, and their thoughts, concerns and aspirations as conveyed to him in the course of two decades. 'Once Upon a Time in Aparanta is about Goa, certainly,' he said, 'But it goes beyond Goa, in that the novel questions the premise of paradise and conflicts and self-inflicted wounds that occur in such paradises' by both the game of traveler roulette and the interests of business and politics.' Mr Chakravarti added, 'A reader can engage with this novel at several different levels.' He discounted the suggestion by the audience that some characters in the novel, such as that of the arch-villain, Winston Almeida, and that of Aparanta's overlord, Number One, are based on real-life characters. It is up to the reader to interpret the novel and the characters in the way they wish. This is literary fiction with a message. Once Upon a Time in Aparanta is Chakravarti's third book. He is the author of the best-selling and critically acclaimed novel Tin Fish, and Red Sun:Travels in Naxalite Country, a major work of narrative non-fiction on present-day Maoist revolutionaries of India. All these books have been published by Penguin India. * For more information please contact Hemali Sodhi at [EMAIL PROTECTED] or Rachna Kalra at [EMAIL PROTECTED] Penguin Books India 11 Community Centre, Panchsheel Park, New Delhi 110 017 Tel: 91 11 2649 4401; Fax: 91 11 2649 4403/ 04; Mob: 9899588545 www.penguinbooksindia.com

[Goanet] State of minorities in India
I am forwarding this article in response to the article forwarded by Malcolm Mendonza “State of minorities in India” Goanet dtd. Sun Sep 28 08:45:34 PDT 2008 Delhi terror encounter exposes a peculiar Jamia character By Ravi Shanker Kapoor Even when it became crystal clear that the encounter was genuine, the fundamentalist Muslims continued to raise questions about it. Two days after the death of Inspector Sharma, Jamaat-e-Islami Hind (JIH) demanded a high-level “impartial” investigation into the shootout. “An impartial investigation would expose the reality of those involved in terror activities,” secretary general of Jamaat-e-Islami Hind Nusrat Ali said in a statement. One shudders to think what would have happened if Delhi Police had not suffered a single casualty. There would have been an orchestrated campaign to malign and demonise the same Inspector Sharma, whose martyrdom has evoked such a poignant response from the grateful nation. The Teesta Seetalvads, the Kuldeep Nayars, the human rights hawks, the sundry cause-searching activists—all of them would have raised a stink, conjuring up a phantasmagoria, in which the loathsome terrorists would have appeared innocent and the daredevil cops would have looked like murderers. The Jamia Nagar encounter has underlined not only the audacity of jehadis—opening fire at cops, which eventually killed a brave officer of Delhi Police—but also the mindset of a substantial section of the Muslim community. It has also exposed intellectuals and educated Muslims as mendacious rhetoricians. The immediate reaction in Jamia Nagar, the Muslim-dominated locality in the capital where the shootout took place, was: it is a ‘fake encounter.’ But when reports started pouring in about Inspector Mohan Chand Sharma’s death, the charge was toned down. Many Muslims, however, continued to shroud the shootout with doubts and mystery. “If those boys were terrorists, why did they give their true addresses? And if they had been part of the blasts, why didn’t they flee thereafter? Where are all the guns and ammunition which the police claim to have found?” Hazi Khan, a resident of Muslim-dominated Jamia Nagar, was quoted in a news report. There are always ifs and buts, always a reluctance to accept the truth as it is: that educated Muslim youths lived in a house in the locality and used it as a base to execute their bloody designs; that a team of Delhi Police tracked them down, killed two of them and arrested one, while two managed to escape. The escape itself fed more conspiracy theories. According to a news report, “Rumors are the mainstay of the neighbourhood, as locals discuss the encounter, which many are still finding hard to believe… The whereabouts of the two militants who escaped is also a point of much speculation here. Zulfikar Ahmad, another local staying in a nearby lane, wonders how the men could have escaped. ‘There’s no door leading out from the back and no one would have tried jumping from the fourth floor. Even if they had, they would have jumped into police personnel only,’ argues Ahmad.” Notice another ‘if..’ Even when it became crystal clear that the encounter was genuine, the fundamentalist Muslims continued to raise questions about it. Two days after the death of Sharma, Jamaat-e-Islami Hind (JIH) demanded a high-level “impartial” investigation into the shootout. “An impartial investigation would expose the reality of those involved in terror activities,” secretary general of Jamaat-e-Islami Hind Nusrat Ali said in a statement. Even as the JIH condemned the acts of terror in the country, it said that peace could only be possible by tracing out the “true culprits” behind the terror attacks. This is typical Islamist tactic, which is ardently supported by Leftists and liberals: insinuate against law-enforcers: question their motives, raise doubts about any action they take against jehadis; at the same time, remain silent on the acts of terror. If there is the slightest hint of an excess by security forces, magnify it a million times and present it as ‘genocide,’ ‘mass-murder’, etc. The bleeding hearts always try to shield the jehadis, who are unconscionable murderers. Consider Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) HGS Dhaliwal’s statement at a press conference (September 21), which showed some light on the jehadis who engineered serial blasts on
[Goanet] 'Goenchem Jevonn' by IAM
Goenchem Jevonn by IAM Well upon reading local news papers ads, somehow I got tempted to visit this place at Woodbourne Country Club, Nuvem-goa for tempting ‘Goenchem Jevonn’ sort of food festival presented by IAM (Institute of Advanced Management –The Hotel School) on 27th 28th Sept. 7.30pm onwards. I arranged a team of three plus our driver. The moment we stepped out of our car, we realized that we are either at wrong place or I read it wrong. Boys and girls out there (welcoming the guests, not many just us) with their suits/formal dress and two of us with T-Shirts and sandals. As we approached the reception counter, there were even more staff with laptops etc on the counter. At this time, our driver decided to stay out of it (normally he joins us wherever we go). Entry buffet (Goenchem Jevonn) was Rs.150 per head (it should have been Rs.100 as all the food prepared by the hotel school itself). There was a welcome drink red colour ‘Kokum syrup’. The moment we took our seats, a young lady come with the bar menu. We reluctantly ordered a total of 90ml whisky costing Rs.105 (Rs.35/30ml) and two soda Rs.20. (earlier, elsewhere, we had one round of 750ml for Rs.190) Then she asked if we would like to order any snacks – ‘Naka re baba anik ani snek naka, hi marog visky ghetlea ti puro’ said one of us. Soon came a Goan 'poder' like with ponk-ponk horn except he was in chef’s dress, he was selling cheuris paum in large stray hanging around his neck. Small bite size bread Rs.10 each. We bought 8 and then again another 8. At this time our tummy was nearly half full. Now the time for buffet.. Nicely presented dishes in traditional earthen pots. See pics http://www.flickr.com/photos/joegoauk_fishcurryrice/2895866956/sizes/l/ another http://www.flickr.com/photos/joegoauk_fishcurryrice/2899584721/ I first went for Xit-Koddi (Prawn curry rice). Opted for uklle Xit (boiled rice) but boiled rice were of broken sized rice. The curry did not look prawns curry at all. Then I went for Chiken xacuti, it looked like xacuti but did not taste like xacuti. Then Pork Vindaloo, it was OK. Then we went for fish- fried fish, there was no Visonn as told by keith Miranda over the phone, found bangdde instead . Small pieces of rawa coated bangdde (mackerels) were not fried in shallow frying pan but deep fried. Deep fried fish – is it a part of Goenchem Jevonn? Mr. Miranda also told us there would be a live band but what we saw there was just one man band. Sorry, all our money wasted. The whole jevon for 3 cost us Rs.725 + 700 transport. Don’t understand as to why the IAM was making money despite of the fact that there were at least 12 sponsors like Kingfisher, Goa Tourism, Radio Indigo, etc etc Authentic Goan food cannot be prepared in hotels or institute like this by the people who are mainly outsiders. Goenchem Jevonn? I don’t think so. It looked like money making business I give 3 out of 10. [Goanet] Gospel_Music
Loyola High School Margao Presented Live Gospel Music. Rene Mesquita who spoke on Gods creation. A Powerpoint presentation was put up on the gaint screen based on Gods creation. It doesnt cost to smile so keep smiling. Wilson Fernandes displayed the lyrics of the hymns on the screen. The success also is attributed to parents, staff and students that worked infront and behind the
[Goanet] Don’t damn us FOR NOTHING
TOI, Panjim, 30 Sept 2008 Don’t damn us FOR NOTHING Francisco Colaco laments the fact that communal harmony is vanishing as communal hatred goes on the ascendant Alyque Padamsee, when asked about the spate of violence against Christians, in a recent interview to a popular TV channel, said: I feel horrified. My blood curdles. I studied in Catholic schools. They never tried to convert me (nor any one that I know of). They only taught me good morals. Let's bow our heads in shame, kneel before them, say sorry for all they are silently going through... Christians in India have admittedly had patches of an inglorious past and their share of defects. Today, by and large, they are a peace-loving community rendering a phenomenal amount of service (at least in proportion to the population) to society, irrespective of caste or creed. The 2.3 % Christians in India cater to 20 % of primary education in India, 10 % of all the literacy and community health care, 25 % of all the existing care of the destitute and orphans, 30 % of all the handicapped, lepers, AIDS patients, etc. All funding is not from overseas. Christians encourage their own members to fast, tithe and feed the poorest with that money. In 1993-94 there were 10,201 Indian organizations that received a total of Rs. 1,865 crores from overseas. Of this, less than 10% went to Christian organizations. The topmost recipients of foreign funds are Satya Sai Baba and the Maharishi Ved Vigyan Vishva Vidyapeetham. In fact funds from several overseas Christian channels like EZE, CBM, etc go to many non-Christian NGOs in India. In a most exemplary way, Christian organizations are mainly the ones that care to register and maintain account books and apply for FCRA. Thousands of other organizations do not register at all nor keep accounts. Therefore there is just no way for the home ministry to track the total inflow of their foreign funds. The Bogey of Conversions Figures of various censuses in India reveal that there is an actual decline of Christian population in India - now in the minuscule range of 2.32%. Bodies like National Minorities Commission have not recorded any complaint of forced conversion. The conversion theory is only an excuse for organized attacks on the Churches and Christians in different parts of the country. Though the judiciary and the legislature have attempted to define the vital terms like Hindu, Hindutva, Conversion, Missionary, Native faith, Indian, Inducement etc, there is still a good deal of grey ground that persists which becomes imperceptibly the graveyard of truth. And ignorance and ambiguity are a gold mine for mind manipulators to incite hatred and spark violence. Malevolent overreaction Are Hindus under threat from Christians? A canard! Shashi Tharoor attacking Hindu fundamentalists writes in TOI: As a believing Hindu I am ashamed of what is being done by people claiming to be acting in the name of my faith. I have always prided myself on belonging to a religion of astonishing breadth, and range of belief, a religion that can assert itself without threatening others, and a religion that acknowledges all ways of worshipping God as equally valid. Contrast the above with the utterances of Bajrang Dal chief, as reported in a Bangalore based newspaper: Not an eye for an eye, but we will retaliate against Christian provocation in multiples. Convert one of ours, rape one of ours, commit violence against one of us and we will unleash our forces - with all our might - against you. Christians, the Bajrang Dal chief ought to be reminded, already live in fear in this country and will never dare to provoke him or those of his ilk. So what will he do? Fabricate lies of course, because a lie repeated hundred times becomes truth. Today in India when the politics of division has become far more popular than the politics of unity, we can well imagine the shape of things to come. The modus operandi of the Mangalore fanatics was ingenious and simple as it was odious. There is no guarantee that such incidents will not happen in Goa, unless the government here takes strong preventive measures. The powersthat-be have until now not shown even a semblance of resolve to arraign the fanatics. As India turns into a communal cauldron, Goan Christians, who truly set the spark and played a signal role (together with their Hindu brethren) to liberate this beautiful land from the colonial yoke, look askance. Where is the promise of a prosperous Goa in which all communities would live in harmony? It is sad to see the atmosphere of communal harmony vanish—as communal hatred goes on the ascendant. With immense sorrow, many of us, Goan Catholics, Hindus and Muslims, would like to make those poetic words our own: This black-smeared light/ this night-ridden morning/ this is not the morning we had waited for. -- Question everything -- Karl Marx

Mario Goveia wrote? They are totally frustrated that he has beaten them in almost every major political battle while maintaining his cool under fire, even to this day when he is only a few weeks from the end of his remarkable presidency. He has led the successful defeat of Al Qaeda in Iraq, the prevention of another attack by them on the US mainland since 9/11/2001, the liberation 50 million Muslims in Afghanistan and Iraq from Muslim tyrants, and the successful attempt by mostly Muslim Kosovo to become free and independent of the Christian fascists in Serbia, all while standing up to the feckless western Europeans who opposed him every step of the way. Mario, After every war, the currencies of both the victor and the defeated fall in value. Since the US has not declared victory in both current wars, we can safely conclude that the US dollar we fall further. This is the real cost of the remarkable presidency of George (43) Bush. Secondly, bankruptcy is to capitalism as what hell is to Christianity. When CEO's get paid bonuses regardless of whether they make a profit or loss, you get losses. Lots of losses. George (43) Bush idea of capitalism is to get the US taxpayer to pay for these losses. This years losses, so far, amount to $40,000 for each American. The best words today's markets can hear? [Goanet] UNDERSTANDING HINDUTVA
For favour of publication. =Averthanus= _ UNDERSTANDING HINDUTVA Averthanus L. D'Souza. Ramesh Rajaram Vispute, a former Secretary of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) once remarked: The enemies of the Hindus are the Muslims, the Christians, the Hindu intellectuals and the media. It is very significant as well as intriguing that Vispute included the Hindu intellectuals and the media in his category of the enemies of Hindus. It does not take great intellectual acumen to interpret the meaning of this statement by a very prominent Hindutva promoter. It is quite obvious that Hindu intellectuals (nor any other reasonably educated person for that matter) will refuse to swallow the confused gibberish which is churned out by the Hindutva propagandists to arouse anger and hatred against Muslims and Christians, for which the VHP is so notorious. Any thinking person (including Hindu intellectuals) will see through the falsity of the arguments which the VHP advances in its hate campaigns. It is precisely because the position of the Hindutva campaign is irrational and untenable that the propagandists prefer to recruit uneducated and unthinking followers who can easily be manipulated to believe anything that is fed to them. The Bajrang Dal, which is considered to be the front-rank of the storm-troopers of the VHP is a good example of uneducated youth, with more passion than reason, who are willing to blindly follow orders without thinking, and who are conditioned to believe that heroism consists in slaughtering helpless women and children, and burning innocent people alive. In this respect the Bajrang Dal is no different from the Hitler Youth of Nazi Germany or the youth brigades of the other fascist movements in Europe who were used to terrorize the population into submission. With their saffron head-bands and wielding 'trishuls', and screaming full-throated war-cries, these rampaging gangs can cause terror anywhere - which is precisely what they are trained to do. They are 'programmed' to follow orders, irrespective of the morality of the orders or the consequences which follow.B.S. Moonje, a prominent RSS leader, personally met the Italian fascist leader Benito Mussolini in Rome on 19 March, 1931, visited some important military schools and educational institutions and became acquainted with the Balilla and the Avanguardisti organizations. Moonje wrote in his diary that the keystone of the fascist system is the 'indoctrination' of youths, rather than education. This is the foundation on which the Bajrang Dal is built. While cultivated ignorance of the youth is one facet which is promoted by the Hindutva ideologues, deliberate falsification of current facts as well as of History is another method of indoctrination used.Lal .Krishna. Advani closely studied the system of propaganda developed by Nazi Germany. He says: In Nazi Germany, fascism in action developed two other distinctive characteristics: firstly, adoption of propaganda as a key instrument of State policy; and secondly, the systematic development of a demonology to keep the masses in a mood of perpetual tension and hysteria. (L.K.Advani- A Prisoner's Scrap Book ) Advani and his colleagues have tried hard to refine and improve upon the propaganda-cum-terror machinery which was developed by Nazi Germany, specially by Hitler's most trusted lieutenant Paul Joseph Goebbels, whose name has now become synonymous with high-voltage mendacious propaganda. One of the more prominent falsifications which the Hindutva protagonists are propagating is that Hindutva is an integral part of Hinduism. No sensible person, (including thinking Hindus) accepts this claim. In fact, the vast majority of Hindus are aghast at this identification of Hinduism with Hindutva. Hinduism is a highly respected religion of long standing. It is recognized (even by non-Hindus) as being, perhaps, one of the oldest religions in human history. It outlived the ancient religions of the Sumerians, the Etruscans, the Mesopotamians the Greeks and the Egyptians. Hinduism has always been associated with 'sanatana' which denotes timelessness or ancientness. Hinduism has never been associated with any particular political system; nor has it ever shown a preference for any particular cultural context. In the broadest sense of the word, Hinduism is heterodox and embraces a vast variety of rituals, beliefs, popular practices and dietary preferences. In the Bhagavad Gita, Lord Krishna tells Arjuna: Through whatever path men come to me, I accept them through that very path. In sharp contrast to Hinduism as a religion, Hindutva is a clearly distinguishable political ideology which is straining to concoct a national identity based on the Hindu religion.Hindutva is a clearly fascist political movement, which has drawn much of its inspiration from European fascism

Nostalgia Pic #17: _ 1924 - 2004: then and now: 2 views of the old Customs House, Panjim - 80 years apart. Situated opposite the Ferry Wharf, Panjim, it was known in the native Portuguese then as Largo da Alfandega and served as the border post for seaborne goods arriving from outside Goa - which of course, was still a Portuguese colony until 1961 - how hilarious is that! Note the natives of the time in their cute garb, milling in mela! It'll probably surprise a few to learn that Panjim really was just a port for Taleigao, which was the big wheel - ask Babush! When the official beautification of Panjim was undertaken a few years ago (for the IFFI - International Film Festival- among others), the Customs House was given a neat makeover. http://2008goanconvention.com/nostalgia.php Pictures: courtesy Sanjeev Sardessai; Raya Shankhwalkar; Panjim. [Goanet] Campaign of Prayer and Penance in the Month of October
To the Clergy, Religious and Lay Faithful in this Archdiocese Subject: Campaign of Prayer and Penance in the Month of October Dearly Beloved, Millions of our fellow citizens continue to be in the grip of untold anxiety and suffering in the wake of natural as well as man-made disasters, which have hit them in the recent weeks. On the one hand, it is the floods in Bihar and Orissa, which have made the greatest number of victims and caused many deaths. On the other, it is the terrible and senseless atrocities that tens of thousands of peace-loving and law-abiding citizens in a number of States are being subjected to in the name of religion; and lastly, it is the condemnable terrorist attacks on innocent civilians in a few cities across our nation. All these calamities and vicious attacks on human persons and property have caused a great affliction and no less shame to our beloved country and to us, its citizens. While our hearts go out to the millions of fellow-Indians whose lives have been devastated by these events, we need to mourn for our motherland, whose world image as one of the most admired democracies is being irreparably damaged by a few, but powerful, anti-social and fundamentalist outfits. The month of October is traditionally dedicated to prayer and penance by Catholics around the world, in conformity with the desires of the Mother of Jesus, the Lady of the Rosary. It is a month during which Catholic Goans gather in their families, neighbourhoods and parishes to pray the Rosary, with greater devotion, for the various needs of the Church, of the country and of the world at large. I earnestly appeal to my beloved Brother Priests, Religious and members of the Laity of this Archdiocese to dedicate this month to intensified prayer and sacrifice for our beloved country, particularly for the following intentions: - that those countless sisters and brothers of ours who have been rendered homeless and those who have had to go into hiding to escape relentless persecution may soon receive effective help from their governments to find a secure place to stay and to begin their lives anew; - that government authorities may ensure that order is restored in the affected areas and adequate compensation is given to those who have lost their houses, institutions and places of worship for no crime of theirs and that more stringent action is taken against all kinds of anti-social and anti-religious activities that violate basic human rights; - that leaders, civil and religious, and all people of good will may strive to promote, at all costs, a society of justice, peace and harmony in our land; - that the promoters of all communal hatred and uncalled-for acts of terrorism may be enlightened to desist from their operations that only jeopardize the long-term interests and fair image of our country and be led to adopt a constructive role in the building of our great nation. May this campaign of prayer and penance also help each one of us to grow in our commitment to the Lord and to His Church as well as in the spirit of forgiveness and love, so characteristically proclaimed in the Gospel we profess. May our penance also bear fruit in our generosity in contributing towards the rehabilitation of the countless victims, knowing well that all the help we send will not be enough. Caritas-Goa has already issued a call to contribute towards those affected by the Orissa riots and is receiving an encouraging response from you. I would like to issue hereby a new and separate call for generous contributions towards the rehabilitation of the flood victims in Bihar and Orissa. A drop in the ocean it may be, but the Church in Goa cannot remain indifferent to the plight of these helpless multitudes. Contributions may be sent by Cheque or Demand Draft in favour of Caritas-Goa, S.B. Acc. No. 18046, with special mention of flood victims. Such contributions will also be received in cash at Caritas-Goa, Institute Piedade, Near Hotel Mandovi, Panjim. We request our Parish Priests and Chaplains to convey the contents of this Circular to other Church institutions and Religious houses as well as the faithful in their respective parishes and we invoke upon everyone God's abundant blessings, through the powerful intercession of Mary, the Mother of Jesus and of the Church.
