[Goanet] Maka Kityak (Why should I bother)?

2008-11-07 Thread J. Colaco jc
Maka Kityak? (based on First they came… a poem attributed to Martin
Niemöller. I was first re-introduced to this poem about 2 years ago
by Dr. Samir Kelekar)

When they falsely accused the young boys of an engineering college of gang rape,
I remained silent about their rights.
I was not one of them. I wasn't the one who would be scarred for life.
I was not their father, mother, sister or brother either.
Maka Kityak?

When they falsely accused the priest of molesting a young girl in Ribandar,
I remained silent;
I was not the priest, and I had also heard that the priest had
befriended another woman.
And I was always told that a priest must never befriend a woman.
Besides, Maka Kityak?

When they effectively outed the young Ribandar girl's name and that
she was molested by the priest,
I did not speak out;
I was not the girl who would have to live the life she now has to live.
Maka Kityak?

When they allegedly threatened the Old Goa nuns with rape
I remained silent.
I was not a nun.
Maka Kityak?

When they effectively outed a young girl's name and stated that she
was molested by politicians' relatives,
I did not speak out;
I was not the girl who would have to live the life she will now have to live.
I am not the girl who will have to be vaginally examined over and over
again and then be told that she deserved it anyway because she was a
slut.
Maka Kityak?

and then
They came for me.
I told them: It is OK. Slander me, Abuse me, do whatever you have to do me
After all, I am a pawn.
Use me.
I know. When you can ruin the reputations of the innocent, and use a
young girl's misfortune by further raping her emotional being to
further your own political agenda
Who am I to object to your actions?

Zhuzhe ( no SSC certificate but cabinet maker - hence, a potential
target of High-Risk Rodriguez? )

Dear all,

The above is written - with my basic position that IF anyone rapes
another, he deserves to be rehabilitated in jail. No question about
that. He needs some serious 'counseling' to help prevent this from
happening again.

But do consider what happens when we :

1: Falsely accuse another person of rape
2: 'Out' an innocent victim's name
3: Subject a young girl to repeated high pressure high profile,
media intensive vaginal examinations and questioning.

Do also consider the fact that Goa has enacted a flawed Children's Act
in 2003 and NOT one single lawyer/activist has worked towards bringing
it in line with the Indian Constitution.

And that: There are NO easily accessible and confidential facilities
for young girls/boys (and/or their guardians) to report a rape
incident immediately - so that proper examination including DNA
testing can be done on site and early.

Instead, we have this Kodel drama which even outs the name of the
alleged victim.

On the other hand, Maka Kityak? Right?

2008-11-07 Thread Thomas Coutinho
I am referring to Romel de Melo's request for Konkani translation of ' Hello
' . I remember we used to say ' Hey ' or ' ei ' pronounced like in English '
Hay '. Tone would change depending on the circumstance and situation.

The ' Hello ' became very popular after the telephones came into the village
house holds.

Another thing I remember being Saxtikar is that we use and still
predominantly like to say in conversation eg. ' Xit bit kelem go ' or
'Harem Barem Bazlam kitem aiz ( dry fish)' or ' Nustia ..bustia guetlem
tuvem ' very commonly added ' B ' as prefix to the actual word. More
examples...dore bore fodtolom, tokli bokli fodtolom, rozar bozar kelem.

2008-11-07 Thread Samir Kelekar

Baradbab:
Dr. Jose Colaco is a Goan by birth, who is a Portuguese citizen, living in
Bahamas, and who is qualified in British law. If you are still with me and

not confused enough, he has a soft corner for Andamanese and the Sidhis and
is against freedom fighters.

Way back in 1967 or some other time (and being a stickler for unnecessary
details but not the important things, I am sure he will correct me on the
date), he got a lathi while he was a by stander during some agitation in

Panjim. He still remembers that lathi vividly even now.

He complains about Goa a lot as we have seen. His big grouse is against
Bandodkar because he gave jobs to Bhaile. But then, he doesnt realize
that he himself is a bhailo in Bahamas.

We have seen how he has tried to defame the victim in this rape case by
implicitely accussing her of faking the rape etc (using a testtube) ; but I
tell you if he is sued by

the victim or her mother for defamation in Florida -- a place which he
often visits, he will try to
wiggle out of what he said by giving some or the other excuses.

He is very good at what I call dancing the kathakali dance. If he can't
answer one question that you asked, he will ask you a counter question
on something else.

Enough said,

[Goanet] My pledge to Goanet

2008-11-07 Thread Mervyn Lobo
Folks,
I feel that the best way to develop good thinking, writing and debating skills
is by learning from someone who displays the same.

Sadly, I have come to the conclusion that debating a person who has no thinking
skills is just going to waste the precious time I have in this life.
As such, I have decided to completely ignore all posts here made by 'our' Mario
Goviea.

I am convinced that Goanet has much more to offer if the focus remains on Goa
and Goans.

Lastly, let me plea to all here to spend a moment or two contemplating on
whether it is really worth responding to anything that 'our' Mario posts.
I firmly believe that if a few of us use the 'ignore' button for a few weeks,
'our' Mario would move on.

With a little effort, we could make this a reality.

Re: [Goanet] How are you?

2008-11-07 Thread rcabral
Hi Rico,
You are absolutely right in most of what you've said. Konkani interestingly is
a very idiomatic language. Hence translating literally from one to the other is
not advisable as the meaning can get distorted. Take for example the commonly
used sentence Chau marli or suttla to. During exams students will ask
khoim poddla or khoinche clssint poddla. This poddla reminds me of a funny
incident when a local went to the nearby convent and told the sister in charge
who did not know Konkani that well Sister, amcho sezari bhair poddla. to
which the nun replied tor, bhitor haddat taka.
Konkani is avery interesting language whether you write it in Devnagri or in
Roman script.
Have a nice day!

Frederick [FN] Noronha * फ्रेडरिक नोरोन्या [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:
 My (possibly incorrect) view is:

 * There is probably no one-to-one equivalence in languages. So there's
no exact equivalent for 'hello' in Konkani.

 * One would not ask 'how are you'. Instead, you use a round-about way
to get to that point in Konkani. Nisteak kitem? (What's the fish on
the menu today... asked before noon, a way of saying 'hi'.) Even
'Boslea?' (Are you seated? Many expats get pretty bugged by this form
of greeting, not understanding its connotations, and attempting a
 one-to-one translation.)

 In cyberspace
 [http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20071217023102AAllRso]
 the answers being given are

 How are you?- Kashi assa?
 Where ru?-Khay assa tu?

Keep in mind that there are a lot of (mostly unacknowledged) dialectal
differences in spoken and written Konkani. (Konkani has been more
spoken in the past.) The persons attempting to render Konkani (above)
into the Roman script are probably not users of that script, and are
using it because of the keyboard they use. So don't follow the
 accepted conventions.

While the result might sound okay to their 'guessing' ear, it comes
across, as you say, sounding Marathified. Or should we say
Sankritisied. (This is also aggravated by the move to rid Konkani of
'impure' foreign languages, and only depend on 'national' ones. You
should read a book called Hindi Nationalism by Alok Rai, an IIT prof
and grandson of the great Hindi poet Munshi Premchand, for more on a
parallel debate in the context of Hindi-Urdu-Hindustani.)

I think more appropriate spellings for the above would thus be:
 Kosho assa?
Or Koshi assa? (depending on gender of person addressed).
 Khuim assa tum?

I'm sure someone better equipped could correct us on these issues...

 * This is supposed to offer a machine translation, but it doesn't work:

Name dropping for beginners
In accepting this non-award I would like to mention…

By Cecil Pinto

This week marks three years of writing this column. Of course I did
take a three month break earlier this year, but then who's really
bothered. There was no drop in circulation, nor letters to the editor
insisting I come back. Bah! As I pass this milestone with no award,

you, dear dedicated readers, to my team.

Team?, you ask. What team? I thought you wrote this column alone.
Fat chance! Google, Wikipaedia and Answers.com can give you only that

insightful opinions on call, specially when you don't have access to

Here they are in no particular order.

Dear goanetters

As you are aware there is an online petition being circulated regarding

http://www.PetitionOnline.com/siamgs1/petition.htmlhttp://www.petitiononline.com/siamgs1/petition.html

Well, a hard copy version is going around the Moira village too. Some
children are doing the job of passing the petition around house to house. I
have some very reliable information that one of the Panch members has tried
to intimidate some of the children who went round with the petition, by
saying that the Panchayat would file a police case against the young man
who has done the work of printing the hard copy version that will have the
signature lists and] he also asked one of the children to stop passing the
Petition around.

If these people were clean, what need would there be for this despicable
behavior. Presumably other henchmen of the Sarpanch will also be trying out
these strong arm tactics.

They will ultimately have to pay for this. Not for nothing is the National
Motto of India 'Satyameva Jayate' - 'Truth Alone Triumphs'

The power of the mob! Boogie Viegas asked a query, Ashley forwarded in the
info after I linked him with Ashley, and then sent in the link to Goanet.
You picked it up, and Cip has followed through with action.

We can't forget that Goa got access to cyberspace (a BSNL server in 1998,
long before many other bigger Indian cities) because of lobbying by Goanet!

I do believe that we all learn from each other, and strengthen one another
by networking. Thanks for mentioning the issues clearly below. I'll copy
them to CSI, the Computer Society of India Goa chapter for further
awareness.

Btw, Silvan, how's the software work going? I do hope your keeping at it.
The software you wrote for churches in Goa was pretty interesting! Maybe

2008-11-07 Thread Lionel Messias
Garden of Eden - 1

Laying it on thick

You need to have an imagination for what I am about to reveal, and
imagination you have. You just gotta to have it in Goa. Imagine just how
little it would take to renovate a garden of 570 sq m. Then imagine, your
government is currently spending Rs 1,59,68,204.24 to renovate it because of
the Panjim MLA Manohar Parrikar. Now after this colossal figure was conjured
and configured, the imagination (this time) of the planners in government
went into overdrive. For those who live deep south or up north, the garden
is at Rua De Ourem, at Panjim's old entrance and exit road. This once
popular area of Panjim is now used by pedestrians to exit and enter the KTC
bus stand. Nothing more!

This is how the garden deal unfurled. On 24 April 2008 the scheduled date of
opening the tender, there were no responses for the first call though two
bidders, one who came from Mumbai; bought tenders forms. They were My
Associates of Andheri (W) Mumbai and Bhella Constuctions of Ponda. At the
next call, two bidders purchased the tender forms: My Associates (again) and
A. Ponnuraj of Panjim. Now, why would My Associates try a second time when
it refused to bid the first time despite buying the tender forms? Beats me.

Beyond Reasonable Doubt

On 5 May 2008 the scheduled day of the second call, A. Ponnuraj was
disqualified as his EMD (earnest money deposit) was not submitted as per
rules. Surprise, surprise! We have here an experienced contractor (the rule
states a contractor must completed pre-specified high-worth jobs in the last
5 yrs) who appears incapable of completing a mere EMD formality! This time
however My Associates after appearing to be reluctant the first time, quoted
Rs 2,00,63,649.50. The figure brought down 2.5 % by the Goa State
Infrastructure Development Corporation (GSIDC) to Rs 1,95,62,058. It was
however still 68.48% higher than the GSIDC estimated cost of Rs 1,16,10,674
and 39.24% above the reasonable (of GSIDC again) amount of Rs
1,40,48,719.97. If you have not comprehended this jargon, estimated cost is
what the GSIDC knows is the estimated cost going by market calculations.
Reasonable cost, I guess is, if the contractor is unreasonable enough to
quote above the estimated, it requires GSIDC to be reasonable and make
unreasonable look reasonable. Remember, I warned you to wear your
imagination cap before you read this. So, don't blame me, if this sounds
weird. It is. As a result, My Associates' bid was rejected because it was
too high.

Beyond The Call Of Duty

Now, this is where your imagination truly gets stretched like India rubber.
In response to the third call, A. Ponnuraj made a second comeback. This time
however KG Thomas of Panjim and New Park Sun Gardens of Mahim, Mumbai join
the game. But on the scheduled day of the opening 28 May 2008, mysteriously
only KG Thomas bids. Does this not stretch your imagination? You have
Mumbai's My Associates who drops by twice (1st 2nd call) but does not bid
the first time. The second time, it bids so high, it is bound to be
rejected. Then you have A. Ponnuraj who buys the tender forms twice (2nd
3rd call) makes a silly (tactical perhaps?) error the first call, then does
not bid at the 3rd call. You would think Ponnuraj would want to make amends.
No? Finally, you have New Park Sun Gardens from Mumbai who suddenly enters
the field at the fag end (3rd call) but does not bid. Not to mention Bhella
Constructions, who apparently didn't want to play ball at all.

The Games Begin

The tactical maneuvering done, KG Thomas waltzes into the scene, and there's
a chest full of silver dollars to be dug out of the garden. The only bidder
left now is him. He bids Rs 1,72,62,923.50, then agrees to negotiate his
quote despite being the only bidder left in the arena. Blows my mind away!
So, he reduces his bid by 7.5 % and his quote is now Rs 1,59,68,204.24. The
negotiated offer is 9.94% above the reasonable amount of Rs 1,45,24,697.48
and 37.53% above the estimated cost put to tender (pun not intended) that is
Rs 1,16,10,674. This makes GSIDC really pleased because it promptly claims
the offer made in the third call is Rs 35,93,854 (Rs 1,95,62,058 minus Rs
1,59,68,204) lesser than the offer it received in the second call. Do make a
note also that GSIDC's reasonable amount has by now risen from Rs
1,40,48,719.97 to Rs 1,45,24,697.48. It doesn't end here.

(Feedback: 6658606, [EMAIL PROTECTED])

Garden of Eden - II

The Main Opera

Last week you read of Rs 1,59,68,204 being spent to renovate the existing
footpath that none uses because it is on the creek side of Rua De Ourem in
Panjim; and also the existing garden or so-called garden. Nobody walks on
that side because each and every building or public utility is on the other
side and as a result protects pedestrians from the sun. It therefore makes
no sense renovating that side. What should surprise you even is the fact
that GSIDC did not think it was necessary to consult the Town and Country

Marshall writes -
While goans are apparently giving up konkani in favour of English and other
languages, here are marwaris in Bombay who speak the language fluently.
We adopted the idiom a century ago in British India, out of necessity. In
Bombay, we competed with the Irish/Indian mob, Parsees and East Indians for
social status and for jobs. Fifty years ago, one belived it helped with
obtaining 'bank jobs': that case certainly holds no water today. An Indian who
attempts to converse in English with a govt. employee is often ignored; it gets
worse in the streets and in stores. One can make a strong case for the use
of the vernacular all through High School, with English reserved for the
sciences only: it works very well for 99% of Indians. The sight of little
children using creole leads me to believe the parents see English as a way out
of old class compartments. I fear that with Carnival announcing new losses,
their jobs below deck may not be around much longer. The Jesuits dispatch
young Goan novices to Bassein for a six month
'immersion' course in Marathi, which enables them to teach in the missions in
the vernacular. The learning they provide serves the country well, with a
caveat: they produce the occasional Bicholim/Barad nemesis to Marshall and
Augusto !eric.

[Goanet] What the Draft Regional Plan 2021 has to say for policing activists!

2008-11-07 Thread Jason Keith Fernandes
Dear All,

Please find the troubling position of the State of Goa present on p. 79 of
the Draft Regional Plan 2021. For your reading convenience I am pulling out
significant portions. For the whole paragraph you may refer to the end of
this message.

The extracts read

growing organized activism typical of a small but well-informed state and
also more than a normal share of VVIP movements add to problems in
policingThus Goa has as large a range of crime typologies as Mumbai or
Chennai

What is the Task Force, and the Govt. of Goa trying to suggest really? That
organised activism, of the kind we see in Goa, concerend with the manner in
which the State is participating in the desctruction of the livelihood bases
of Goans is criminal activity?

Perhaps the first thing that the Govt needs to go is to explain what exactly
this means, and to pull out this offending sentence forth with, with a
public apology tendered by the Members of the Task Force.

Please circulate this message widely!

4.5 Protection

4.5.1 Goa is an established international tourist destination. It has one of
the five busiest major ports of India and five other minor ports, an
international airport and another bigger one on the anvil at Mopa. It is a
growing informal and part time labour magnet and has rapidly escalating land
values and concomitant growing disputes on land titles. It has open-ended
borders with two major States. Add to this, a growing disproportion of
personalized vehicles due to escalating affluence and otherwise chaotic
traffic through a variety of modes. Also growing organized activism typical
of a small but well-informed state and also more than a normal share of VVIP
movements add to problems in policing, made worse by seasonal bulges in the
visiting force - however welcome they may be for the economy. Thus Goa has
as large a range of crime typologies as Mumbai or Chennai

[Goanet] Indian Army officer arrested over bomb attack

Shock as top Indian Army officer arrested over bomb attack
Jeremy Page in Delhi

The Indian Army has been shocked by the arrest of a senior Military
Intelligence officer on suspicion of involvement in a bomb attack by
Hindu extremists in western India in September.

Colonel Srikant Prasad Purohit is the first serving officer in India's
Army — seen as a bastion of secularism since the country's
independence in 1947 — to be arrested on terrorism charges.

His detention is prompting calls for a ban on Hindu nationalist groups
accused of stirring political violence, including recent attacks on
Christians in eastern India, before national elections next year.

It may also force Indian authorities to investigate whether Hindu
radicals were behind other recent bomb attacks, many of which have
been blamed on Islamic extremists backed by Pakistan's intelligence
service.

Colonel Purohit, 37, was arrested in Bombay on Wednesday on suspicion
of involvement in a bomb attack that killed at least six people near a
mosque in the western city of Malegaon on September 29.

The Anti-Terror Squad (ATS) of the surrounding state of Maharashtra is
now questioning him at its headquarters in Bombay, according to Dinesh
Agarwal, an ATS spokesman.

Inspector Agarwal denied Indian media reports that Colonel Purohit had
confessed to masterminding the explosions, and that the ATS wanted to
question other serving military officers.

The investigation is progressing, he told The Times. Questioning
other serving officers is not on the cards now.

However, he confirmed that the ATS had arrested eight other civilians,
including a retired army major, Ramesh Upadhyay, on suspicion of
involvement.

Investigators say that Colonel Purohit and Major Upadhyay were both
members of Abhinav Bharat (New India), a Hindu nationalist
organisation founded in the western city of Pune in June 2006.

Abhinav Bharat's President is Himani Savarkar, the niece of the Hindu
radical who assassinated Mahatma Gandhi, the Indian independence
leader, in 1948.

She accuses India's ruling coalition — led by the Congress Party — of
trying to smear Hindu nationalists and has offered legal aid to all
the arrested members of Abhinav Bharat.

She admits meeting Colonel Purohit, but says that he could not have
been a member of Abhinav Bharat because army officers are forbidden
from joining political organisations.

It's a political conspiracy, led by the Congress, she told The Times.

Her group is regarded as one of the more radical in the Hindu
nationalist movement, which also includes the Bharatiya Janata Party —
India's main opposition party.

The BJP, anxious not to undermine its own anti-terror platform,
initially distanced itself from Colonel Purohit and the other Malegaon
suspects.

But in the past two days, it has defended and offered legal support to
Sadhvi Pragya Thakur, a Hindu holy woman who is also among those
arrested.

Whoever is connected with cultural nationalism and Bharatiyata
[Indian-ness] cannot be a terrorist, said Rajnath Singh, the BJP
chief, who has been photographed with the Sadhvi (the female
equivalent of a Sadhu, or Hindu monk).

Without sufficient evidence there is no reason to term Pragya Thakur
a terrorist,'' he said.

Secular parties point to this as further evidence justifying a ban on
Hindu nationalist groups they say were behind violence that killed at
least 60 Christians in the eastern state of Orissa this year.

The Government has so far shied away from a ban, fearing that it would
provoke a backlash from other radicals and rally support for the BJP
ahead of national elections, due by May.

The concern now is that Colonel Purohit's arrest will damage the
reputation of the Army, which is generally seen as apolitical and is
often deployed to quell communal violence.

This incident is a matter of serious concern for all of us. We are
very determined to go to the root of the whole thing, said A.K.
Antony, the Defence Minister. We are waiting for a report from the
Maharashtra police and I can tell you, we are taking it seriously.

Lieutenant General S. P. S. Dhillon, the Deputy Army Chief, said: The
Indian Army's prestige has been hurt after our officer's name came up
in the Malegaon blast case.

He called Colonel Purohit's case a freak incident.

However, military and terrorism experts said they expected that he was
probably just one of several Hindu extremists within the ranks of the
Army, which will now have to overhaul its internal monitoring systems.

There's been a process of political radicalisation going on for some
time, said Dr Ajay Sahni, executive director of the Institute for
Conflict Management.

At some level a handful of people in the army will have become
infected. As far as the institution of the army is concerned there is
no danger of radicalisation — army traditions are far too strong. But
there will be the odd bad egg.

From: Mervyn Lobo [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Sadly, I have come to the conclusion that debating a person who has no thinking
skills is just going to waste the precious time I have in this life. As such,
I have decided to completely ignore all posts here made by 'our' Mario Goviea.

Lastly, let me plea to?all here?to spend a moment or two contemplating on
whether it is really worth?responding?to anything that 'our' Mario
posts. I firmly believe that if a few of us use the 'ignore' button for a few
weeks, 'our' Mario would move on.

Mario observes:

You must be kidding me! Really? All I can say is, God be
praised!:-)) Has Mervyn become a comedian too?

But I wonder what debating is Mervyn talking about? Has anyone noticed any
debate between Mervyn and me? Most of my communications with him for
the last several months has been to correct his relentless barrage of fact-free
information about the USA and its system of government, and his comical
financial advice. However, he still doesn't seem to understand how the US is
organized and how it functions even after all my patient seminars. His advice
speaks for itself.

What he seems to be trying to do now, apparently after much reflection, prayer
and fasting, is to ostracize me to force me to move on. I have never been so
amused since another recent post by one of Mervyn's close friends that was even
more hilarious. That one angrily demanded that Chris Vaz and I pack our potlis
and leave the US. This one, with feigned sadness and turning the real situation
on its head, simply wants me ostracized.

Whew! What a relief. This means I don't have to pack my potlis and pay the
higher airline prices and surcharges, etc:-))

However, Goanetters who have longer memories have all heard Mervyn make such
threats before. These usually last a couple of hours.

But will the fact-free comments about the US and its system stop? If they do,
Mervyn will have no reason to directly deal with me. Neither will his friends.

My philosophy is You are entitled to your own opinions, regardless how
misguided they may be, but you are not entitled to your own facts.

I wonder if we will hear from all those great libertarians and liberals on
Goanet who tell us they are champions of free speech.

I'm not holding my breath.

[Goanet] Goenkars: Hold on to your cash!

2008-11-07 Thread Gabe Menezes
Recession will hit India, be sure about this. The downturn is taking
place in spades, in the USA; G.M will have no money to continue beyond
Christmas. Amazingly they were thinking of merging with Chrysler -
another gone case. Surely the management is not on top, instead of
them running the business the business is running them. Ford burned 7
billion in this quarter. In short there is a very real probability
that these entities will go bankrupt unless the US cavalry comes to
their aid. AIG will go cap in hand once again to the FED, they have
probably insured the whole World's Banking. Government should have let
them go bankrupt.

There will be more than 3 million more, out of workin in US, maybe
before Christmas; Akron Ohio, will start burning tyres. Still no
sweat, as those out of work will be middle class workers. The poor in
the US of A are equivalent to the middle class in Europe ( most
learned USA man's statement), so the middle class will be...I suppose
the upper class equivalent in Europe.

Tata's bad timing in purchasing Rover and Jaguar, they will have to
walk away or scale down tremendously.

We all know that Real Estate in the USA is gone to the dogs and in
some places a house sells for USD1 K and still no takers!. I was
amazed to learn that people in the USA can walk away from their
mortgage and will not be chased for any out standings. Here in the
U.K. if a house is repossessed and is sold for less than what was
borrowed, the lender will pursue you for the balance - what is the set
up in India?

This downturn will take 5/6 years to correct and now that we have all
come down to reality after the dewy eyed US Elections, pragmatism will
be the order of the day.

So lock up your daughters and hold on to your cash, in Goa both are at risk.

The Vietnam war is recognized as one of America's greatest foreign

Mario responds:

Recognized by whom? Only by blind supporters of the Democrat party in America,
like Marlon.

The REAL foreign policy disaster was when the Democrats cut off funding for the
war, just when the VietCong had been devastated by the failure of their Tet
offensive. This was confirmed by VietCong Gen. Giap in his memoires, when he
said he was shocked when the Americans began withdrawing just when his forces
were reeling.

Subsequent to the unfortunate American withdrawal, the VietCong and their
allies at the time, the Khmer Rouge in neighboring Cambodia, massacred an
estimated 3 million innocent Vietnamese and Cambodians who opposed them,
including educated people simply for being intellectuals. This showed that they
were communist tyrants and not the benign freedom fighters of left wing
mythology. Freedom fighters do not massacre their own people.

The events that followed the American withdrawal proves that the military
action to stem the tide of communism in that part of Asia was well founded.

2008-11-07 Thread Venantius Pinto
Dear Augusto,
Truly meant what I said. It would have been flattery on my part, had you
written something trivial, but you did not. Your verse was sincere, and was
my mischievious response, besides which I was not being ingratiating. Of
course the word, sincere does not conjoin with flattering.

But your post raised some thoughts that have been on my mind:
I do my stuff and allow things to happen in their time. Many people relate
to me, and others keep their distance. I am not the best example for
children brought up by elders in straitjackets. I am more interested in
doing things very deeply and if that means being in isolation so much the
better. People are aware that I exist, and if they relate to my journey that
is good.

I am not a writer, but have an interest and a fascination of sorts with
language and words; and that does not make me a writer or anything of that
sort. Sometime when I have slipped on Goanet, on hindsights, its because I
did not made the obvious, obviously so. Perhaps its my interest in Japan,
China, Korea and Tibet and Mongolia that has something to do with my
insanities. Definitely Japan. I am deep into Shodo — studying four streams
of calligraphy. It has to be Japan and my Goan parentage. I could not have
done this in India, besides that, the intensity and focus I need to maintain
as the norm. I say this stepping outside of myself.

I see man as a phenomenon and the phenomenon that is man — ideas from
Teilhard de Chardin.

But such interactions are journeys in mapping thoughts and connecting in our
Cartesian existences. We must connect, but also remember that connecting
takes time and one must only connect towards a coherent growth — although
notions of growth between the most connected of individuals can be
illusionary. But try we must. So do not rule out the idea of the Pinto bar.
It does have a place, it could also be transitory. Do we have a Pinto who
could be an adequate Haus Frau at this bar — to boot out those who vomit and
are way into pawing, groping and coming at inopportune moments. I am
assuming we will all be good mensch.

[Goanet] Portuguese week celebration opposed - by FFs/RSS

2008-11-07 Thread JoeGoaUk
Few minutes ago, I was talking about it here...

Portuguese week celebration opposed

PANAJI- Goa Freedom Fighters Association opposed the Semana de Cultura
Portuguesa, being celebrated from November 7 to 14 in the state, besides
opposing the 500th year celebration of the Portuguese arrival in Goa, tooth and
nail.

Addressing a public meeting near the Martyrs Memorial at Azad Maidan, on
Friday evening, the freedom fighter charged the programme associates as
greedy people, and lauded the Chief Minister, Mr Digambar Kamat, for
refusing to be associated with the function in progress.
The freedom fighter, Mr Naguesh Karmali said, They claim that they gave us
civilization but I say they gave us nothing but `foreign disease and provided
with over 40,000 visa to Goans and this was done through the Portuguese
consulate in Goa.

We are even ready to sacrifice our pension that gives us only medical
comforts but we will never accept the Portuguese culture what we objected and
opposed to. You go to Mozambique or any other Portuguese colonies, they never
allow them to step in, stated Mr Karmali.
In the end, he said we will never come on the roads but will do what we
would like to oppose the celebration of 500th year in 2010.
Mr Prabhakar Sinari, said, ``We will oppose any culture that destroys our
culture and we will fight and oppose this menace of selling Goa to foreigners
till the last drop of our blood.

Portuguese brought `rape culture to the state and they raped our temples,
women and culture and as such we will never allow their culture to flourish in
the state and would oppose it tooth and nail. said the Goa state RSS chief, Mr
Subhash Velingkar.

Mr Kashinath Naik, ex-MLA, Mr Jayendranath Halankar, ex-sarpanch of Anjuna, Mr
Palyekar, were among others, who spoke on the occasion.

Mario responds:

Fred,

It seems you remember such threats that have been made numerous times by these
brothers-in-arms as one of them once called themselves. Unfortunately for
the forum, these only last a couple of hours, so you actually should have bet a
lot more:-))

Secondly, I need to correct you about a misconception you, too, seem to be
laboring under. That I bait Mervyn. The fact is I would like to have as
little to do with these guys in any shape or form, and restrict myself to
correcting their often deliberately misconstrued and mis-stated facts, or
putting some context and perspective on some of their opinions that may be
based on such misconstrued and mis-stated facts, which cannot be allowed to
stand without rebuttal in a public forum.

If there is any bait wouldn't that be a deliberate distortion of a fact,
sometimes repeated over and over again, rather than my correction of such a
fact? On matters of opinion that are based on recognizeable facts, I have
always been willing to agree to disagree.

As I anticipated, some of the usual suspects who support a restriction on free
speech were the first to show their true colors in this thread, while the
alleged defenders of free speech and robust debate are yet to be heard from.
Since many of them disagree with me on political issues, I wonder if they have
the guts to speak out against one of their own friends.

This is another excellent example where people show their true colors without
doing anything, by not doing anything.

From your comments I have no idea where you stand on the free speech issue of
trying to ostracize a member of Goanet, of which you are apparently an
adminstrator. Pretty amazing.

I think this understates the extent to which conservatives are being oppressed
and victimized in this forum and on the talk radio. The truth is that there is
actually a world-wide conspiracy against American conservatives hatched by
Islamic terrorists, Ahmadinejad and Obama in collaboration with Hugo Chavez,
Castro brothers, Chicago thugs, Palestinians, the Clintons, Levinsky,
Farrakhan, Ayres, Wright, Rezko and their many childhood Muslim and communist
friends. Marlon heads the Goanet contingent.

Mario observes:

Marlon heads some anti-conservative contingent on Goanet? Oh, really? That
may come as a shock to him, who was last heard from pretending to be a
Libertarian:-)) What a comedian, that Marlon:-))

I think that title fits you far more closely, Santosh, whose name you missed
adding to the list above:-))

I think the record will show that Marlon wakes up every few months to throw
some verbal bombs at people he dislikes, complete with mis-stated and
delibertately misconstrued facts for shrapnel, then runs and hides to avoid the
incoming return fire:-))

[Goanet] Sesa Holders, Beware !

2008-11-07 Thread eric pinto
The downturn is now a near downfall, with Mittal claiming new orders do not
exist,  General Motors asking for a 'government is a solution' handout of 10
billion,  Ford announcing a total burn of 7 billion, and better retail chains
disclosing a 20 % plus drop in sales figures. One cannot expect a govt.
solution for  Tata Steel and Sesa holders, we had been bankrupt socialists for
much too long.
Carter had capped oil imports at 7 million barrels a day, which meant four
cylinder cars; with a GM V-P, Rove, in the White House, horse power was a
blowing in the wind, and the goo hit 14 million a day. Our unsold SUVs would
make for suitable housing around our plantations in Honduras.
A prominent politico, who eyes the White House in 2012, believes Africa is a
'country'. This suggests she need not know that some of our exhaust smells of
Nigeria and Angola, the origins of 6 million barrels of the sweet stuff,
unloaded every day, in Houston.   eric.

[Goanet] Sonis Sirsat and Tuna Goesa regale audience in Lusofonia week

2008-11-07 Thread Bernado Colaco
Goa's top class and polyglot singer Sonia Sirsat regaled a Macau audience with
her impeccable voice by singing our Goan mandos, deknis, and the immemorial
fados. Her rendition of Cancao do Mar (Dulce Pontes) brought the audience to
their feet. Sonia was ably supported by the superb Trio Orlando.

Our Goan traditional dances was show cased by Messias Tavares. These group of
artists are in Macau to celebrate the Lusofonia week. This years our Goan matou
is a replica of the Aguada Farol built in 1612 and one of the oldest in Asia -
courtsey Mr. Francisco 'Chico' Lopes. Food delicacies were once again provided
by our sisters alias mannas.

A big up to our Goan artists who displayed top talents.

There will be more than 3 million more, out of workin in US, maybe

I believe every auto job creates 5-6 ancillary jobs in the North American
economy. The Big-3 are paying the price for feeding the market with
gas-guzzling automobiles and resisting innovation for the past 20
yearsnot to forget those rosy deals with the unions that guarantee
benefits until one departs this earthly life. GM is now betting the farm on
the Volt and will probably hasten its launch. To make matters worse for
them, the price of crude oil has fallen over 60%suddenly those SUVs are
not looking too bad again.
There is a major crash in the global auto sector coming along in 2009 is

is starting to unfold.

Here in the U.K. if a house is repossessed and is sold for less than

This downturn will take 5/6 years to correct and now that we have all
come down to reality after the dewy eyed US Elections, pragmatism will
be the order of the day.

RESPONSE: Now-now.are you making excuses for Obama's forthcoming
failures?? Two days after being elected he is already on record saying he
may not be able to 'fix' everything in one term. So much for all his
pre-election promises, eh??. The poor man..look at his features today as
compared to 2 years ago when he began his campaign vs Hillary - the
pressures are enormous for his tender shoulders.

Is the situation any better in the UK?? Close to 2 million unemployed (6%);
Inflation at 16-year high (5.2%); Home prices depressed by 15% as compared
to last year.

Looks like the doom-and-gloom from the US is spreading across the pond and
to the far reaches of the world. Ohh..and dont lose count of Russia's
diminishing millionaires..somebody could possibly buy those Londoners in

[Goanet] Mining and Art?

2008-11-07 Thread Hartman de Souza
* *

On November 4th, The Rt. Hon. Keith Vaz MP, inaugurated, at the Nehru
Centre, London, 'Goa Contemporaries', an exhibition of works on paper by
seven Goa-based artists. Presented by Kiki's London, the show is
co-sponsored by the Vasantrao Dempo Education and Research Trust and
Sunaparanta Goa Centre for the Arts, a Dattaraj V Salgaocar initiative.

How terribly sad!

Not the exhibition itself, whose curator is the well-known writer, Maria
Mascarenhas, who is herself an art collector with a discerning eye. From all
appearances, a great deal of thought has gone into bringing together the
work of Julio De Souza, Swatee Kotwal, Apurva Kulkarni, Deviprasad C Rao,
Suhas Shilker, and Norman Tagore. A high point of the exhibition is
showcasing the work of Vamona Navalcar, Goa's senior-most artist, and the
first Goan to study at the Escola Superior de Belas Artes of Portugal. One
is, of course, a little surprised, if not bewildered that the irascible but
brilliant Charudutta Prabhudesai finds no place on this otherwise fresh and
exciting take on Goan contemporary art.

One could even venture that this exhibition must also be taken to Mumbai,
New Delhi, Kolkata, Bangalore and Chennai, and yes, perhaps even Baroda and
Shantiniketan, if only to dispel the notion that most Indians (even the rich
ones) have of Goa…the perfect place to chill out and eat and drink, where
the natives are a frolicsome bunch who play the guitar while leaning against
a coconut tree. Those who see this exhibition may just make the connection
that the lineage of Gaitonde and Souza (my personal favourites) continues in
good health.

No, at the end of the day I am sad because the funding for this exhibition
has came from two sources that have their roots of commerce in mining ore,
or, simply put, prioritizing private company-specific profit over the
environment.

It's a pity I live in Pune, where this venerable city's only football team
did not qualify for the national league. Had that happened I would have been
out in full force with every single school student who likes football
cajoled into joining me with placards everytime Dempo's, Salgaoncar, Vasco
(do they have mining interests?) and now even Churchill Brothers (Haven't
the Alemao's just bought a mine?) kicks the ball around.

I love Goan football, make no mistake about that. My placards would read:
'With such beautiful football, why mine ore and screw the earth?';
'Beautiful football and mining don't go hand in hand'; 'Play with Goa's
future like you play with a ball'; and so on and so forth, depending on how
much money I can raise to buy cardboard and paint. If I was in Greenpeace in
fact, I would have great fun at stadiums highlighting how mining is
destroying Goa for the sake of four or five families who have nothing on
their mind but making money out of exporting Goa's mud.

When families over the years have made enough wealth to ensure their
prosperity for at least another four generations, one would think that they
would have thought of diversifying into other forms of commerce and trade
that were more ecologically sensitive. The software industry for instance,
agriculture, ecotourism…convert the barges into houseboats…there's N number
of possibilities if the companies in question just answer a few tough
questions on the link between the protection of bio-diversity today and the
promise of Goa's future.

The time for prevaricating whether mining is profitable or not is absurd,
because one must perforce ask at what cost? Now is the time for company
introspection and reflection, if not self-critique. Perhaps even the
commissioning of an independent social audit or what, in some circles is
known as displaying corporate social responsibility. For me, the arts are
indelibly linked with respect for the environment and life. The arts *
celebrate* life and point us to the spirituality inherent in something as
basic as mud.

It does not appear that the mining corporations responsible for the
non-profits that funded this art exhibition have understood this.

[Goanet] Hindu or not ?

2008-11-07 Thread Samir Kelekar
In response to JC's question 'Is Samir Kelekar a Hindu?' I would like to
quote this beautiful song from Mohammaed Rafi.

Na Hindu banega na musalman banega
Insan ki aulad hai, Insan banega...

I hope it answers all questions.

Now, my question to those who try to divide people on religious lines ---

are you an insan ?

regards,
Samir
