[Goanet] What happened to the Great Goan Poie?
To Goanet - Have the poders been using Fair & Lovely to season the poie? It has certainly become fairer but not lovelier. To sample the authentic brown wheaty poie, you have to now look to the small villages away from the bigger urban centres. I was in Parsem early morning today and got to sample a superb poie, straight as well as dunked in chao. Ah, the pleasures of amchem Goem ! (alas, now quickly becoming ghatified.) Warm regards, r

Chief Guest Bosco George, North Goa SP, felicitated Mr. Araujo in the presence of his wife and son Joy in a befitting manner by presenting him with a Felicitation plaque, amidst a thunderous applause from Badminton players, friends and guests who were present at the felicitation function organized by the Panjim Badminton Club(PBC). It was an emotional moment for Badminton lovers as Mr. Araujo has undoubtedly been one of the sport's most inspirational figures with a contribution that will draw few parallels in Goa. He was instrumental in founding PBC and has been at the forefront in organizing various tournaments, coaching camps and other activities since its inception 7 years back. He was a member of the Senior Nationals organizing Committee and played a prominent role in generating funds for the GBA. An emotional Araujo while thanking the PBC for this noble gesture reiterated his commitment to serve Badminton in the years to follow. Yours sincerely Sandeep Heble Joint Secretary, PBC

Re: [Goanet] Fanaticism
Thank you. I did actually do that when your colleague Chris Vaz personally attacked muslims after a goanetter Tariq Siddiqi expressed opposition to President Bush's policies. Ironically, you continued to defend Chris terrible statements even after Chris was modest enough to apologize for his comments. But then, you even accused the late Pope John Paul of being a terrorist sympathizer for his opposition to the war in Iraq! As always, you seem to too easily fall into the trap of partisanship. I guess the saying, "one can't teach an old dog new tricks" really does apply to you. Tsk, tsk. [Goanet] BARACK OBAMA - THE NEW MESSIAH ? - NOT
Date: Sun, 15 Feb 2009 22:58:11 -0800 (PST) From: marlon menezes The US economy is indeed doing great. Or is it? see: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/GoenchimXapotam/message/9078 I think we deserve to be at least a LITTLE smug now, because a "dummy" of a President confounded his critics one more time, took a declining economy and turned it around with policies that have caused huge tax increases for the economy with lower taxes for each taxpayer, Mario responds: I looked in vain for something wrong in my quote above. The US economy did do well for seven years after Bush cut tax rates and created record tax revenues. I have frequently criticised President Bush for being unable to curb wasteful government spending, which Marlon conveniently ignores. Yeah, Bush was wrong to join the push for minority home ownership through lowered lending standards, but even a strident Bush-critic like you have to agree that we are going from the frying pan into the fire, and your narrow-minded and unbalanced criticisms contributed to this. The low income housing boom accelerated following the big push under Clinton, where Janet Reno was threatening the banks with lawsuits if they did not comply with the Community Reinvestment Act and the banks joined the party because they could all make big bonuses by laying the risks off the Fannie Mae and Freddy Mac. Were you even aware that the biggest political recipients of PAC money from these quasi-government organizations were not Bush or any Republican, but Obama, Dodd and Frank, not Bush or McCain? Ever wonder why? John McCain tried to stem the tide but was falsely tagged with the crisis by the Obama obsessed media during the election campaign. See, http://www.realclearpolitics.com/articles/2008/10/do_facts_matter.html Where were you when all this was brewing? Anyone familiar with American business cycles would know that even pessimists like you, after being wrong for seven years, will eventually be correct as a business cycle ends. Marlon wrote: Unfortunately, I AM WITH Mario now, in that the new US administration is only stoking the fire with its excessive spending. One does not solve the problem of excessive debt by going into even more debt. All it is doing now is replacing private debt with govt debt. I'm putting my money into certain commodities, clean tech and non heavily export dependent economies like India. Mario responds: Unfortunately, it is short-sighted know-it-all critics like you who enabled the current admistration to prevail in the last election, and the whole world is likely to pay a heavy price of slowing down the world's economic engine and making it more like Europe. Will "clean tech" survive the Obama administration's subsidies when the US will return to more free market policies? Billions of government subsidies in clean tech over the last 25 years have gone down the drain. Boone Pickens has lost billions in clean tech. "non heavily export dependent economies like India"? Are we forgetting "exports" of outsourced services from India which are sucking fumes currently, with Asif Premji imploring Obama to modify his protectionist tendencies? Date: Mon, 16 Feb 2009 07:40:31 -0800 (PST) From: marlon menezes Subject: Re: [Goanet] Why the West's luck has run out Secondly, the two countries that have been the most badly affected by the banking crisis are the US and England. Mario responds: The UK is heavily regulated. The US financial crisis was created by government regulation. It's called the Community Reinvestment Act. Now, critics like you have given us the most left wing administration in US history. You are going to get regulation like you have never seen before. I hope you are happy.

Re: [Goanet] Why the West's luck has run out - and why Canada and India's has begun
Mervyn, I have been tempted to invest in Canada, given its strong balance sheet, good financial system etc. Unfortunately, I don't think you can put Canada and India in the same boat. Some 70% of Canada's trade is with the US. If the US sinks, Canada sinks. In contrast, India is quite far removed from the US, both geographically and economically. Amongst the major industrial nations, India's continues to remain very insular and non export driven. Much of its trade with the US is based on services rather than consumption. While India will definitely feel the sting of the US problem, it will not be as severe as countries such as China and of course Canada. We are taking you down with us baby! [Goanet] Girls to stay home and cut tendli
This is an extract from an article, which appeared on the Herald, by University Professor, Joe D'Souza. "The growth of casinos, pubs, raves, carnivals and drugs will induce rapes, suicides, unwanted pregnancies, lowering of moral standards and anger in the society We must also acknowledge the positive benefits of moral policing, while rightly condemning excessive violence, fundamentalism and imposition of tradition. We must acknowledge that the girls assaulted at Mangalore were not afraid to make a police complaint, but it is their own hindsight and their parents’ desire to admit the negative impacts of mindless pub, casino and rave culture that made them refuse to forward to make a police complaint" http://oheraldo.in/pagedetails.asp?nid=17333&cid=14 I'm quite surprised the Herald would devote space to an opinion which rightfully belongs to the Neanderthal Gazette, but that is another matter. If Professor Joe D'Souza, is to be believed Goan girls should stay at home and cut tendli. I wonder if the Professor has done any studies that link, casinos, pubs, raves and carnivals to rapes, suicides, unwanted pregnancies and lowering of moral standards. Staying at home and having to dine everyday at "mum's kitchen", as he likes to call it, can also lead to acute depression not mention suicidal tendencies if mum happens to be a particularly bad cook. How is it that no one in India has decried the end of civilisation when men visit bars at 7 in the home, bring home AIDS from red-light districts, waste their entire salaries throwing money at girls in mujras, ask for dowries, force their wives to produce male heirs and finally douse them with kerosene if things don't go as planned. It always strikes me as rather perverse to speak of the moral degradation of Western society, when India ranks as one of the top ten most corrupt countries in the world. Society has survived changes in its cultural make-up despite the histrionics of its parochial, self-appointed custodians. At one time, Elvis gyrating his Pelvis was predicted to bring about a cataclysmic end to the universe as we know it. The only thing that truly corrupts the world is placing fetters around its need to grow and evolve. It is the responsibility of every child to realise that his potential is more than his parents. And it is the responsibility of every parent to let the child go when that moment arrives and the child has indeed surpassed his parents. Not chain him in archaic ideas of what constitutes morality. [Goanet] Indian Workers in Dubai
This was sent to me by one of our Goanetters: http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/relocatedubai My question is, Why don't the Indian free lance journalist or Indian media do some investigation about their citizens in Dubai? There was an investigative journalism made about this subject 'foreign labour in Dubai' by an Indian Journalist in UK and shown on UK TV. I don't understand why the Indians could not capitalise on this subject, and bring to light the atrocities dished out to the Indians in Dubai? ED. --- The gist of the content: "The nature of my job not only entailed the inspection of construction sites but also necessitated late night meetings with local investors, high-ranking Government officials, overseas clientele and arranging sex-workers to entertain them, in order to secure the necessary funding for the company’s numerous construction projects. This is where I was subject to the reality of Dubai’s human-trafficking and prostitution racket. We Indians readily accept the fact that India is not free from the clutches of human trafficking, the sex trade and child slavery, and that the Indian Government, despite undertaking several measures to root out this social menace readily acknowledges the problem our country faces. The Dubai Authorities on the other hand, have turned a blind eye to prostitution and illegal trafficking based solely on greed, hypocrisy and corruption, to the extent that when the Dubai Police's Criminal Investigation Department (CID) makes arrests, (at times) it is because they want to gang rape a particular woman. This is in a land where the legal system implemented by the Dubai Federal Judiciary is based on a very strict code of conduct known as Sharia law that imposes the death penalty for adultery and prostitution. This kind of hypocrisy and exploitation goes against all the tenets and teachings of our Zoroastrian religion and made me seriously reconsider my position. During my three years in Dubai, I was witness and also subject to acts of racism, where people are strictly segregated and a hierarchy worthy of previous centuries prevails. At the top, dominating all other poor mortals, in their black or white robes, are the locals with their oil money. Under the locals come the western foreigners, the experts and advisers, making double the salaries they make back home, all tax free. Beneath them are the Arabs - Lebanese and Palestinians, Egyptians and Syrians. I realised that what unites these groups is a mixture of pretension and racism. We Indians come way below, at the bottom rung of this ladder, and it is indeed sad to see how many Indians, including Parsis, quietly accept and subject themselves to this inhuman treatment, all in the name of the money they worship. The final straw on the camel’s back was when I decided to quit my job and move back to Ahmedabad as my wife was diagnosed as suffering from the worst form of Tuberculosis, a drug resistant strain of Pulmonary TB. I was told by my company that I needed to complete my three year contract before I could leave Dubai. It all started with Legionnaires' disease, which she contracted from the hotel in which we were put up for a month, when we first came to Dubai. Legionnaires' disease has become increasingly prevalent in hotels in Dubai, due to the high flow of traffic in all hotels, including five-star hotels, which cannot cope with this traffic and therefore, have absolutely low or even zero maintenance and disinfection procedures of air conditioning ducts, humidifiers, shower heads, and any piping in which water can lay. The Legionnaires' disease worsened and escalated to Pulmonary Tuberculosis. Because of the very nature of Pulmonary drug resistant TB, which is an often virulent infectious and contagious disease, my wife was refused permission by the Dubai Health Authority (DHA) to fly back to Ahmedabad, and was quarantined for six months in hospital in an isolation ward. My pleas of help and support to the Indian High Commission fell on deaf ears, as they too had no power to intervene with the DHA. I also contacted the Dubai-based Khaleej Times and Gulf News, to tell them my about my difficult situation and I was subsequently threatened with imprisonment by the Government, which controls and oversees each and every aspect of the press, enforcing media-related laws, censoring publications and even going so far as to appoint approved and vetted editors, who "toe-the Government-line." Unlike in India, where we are so used to free and fair speech and freedom of the Press, my dear fellow Zoroastrians, that kind of freedom is absolutely unheard of and unimaginable in Dubai! Increasingly, my wife’s condition worsened, until finally, exactly a year to the date she contracted the disease in this land, my beloved wife and the l

[Goanet] Why the West's luck has run out
Date: Sat, 14 Feb 2009 05:19:46 -0800 (PST) From: Gilbert Lawrence Problem with world economies today is not mere wasteful government spending, but wasteful spending at all levels including individuals and corporations. In the latter situations we call that "poor management decisions". Mario asks: It is no one's else'e business what individuals or corporations spend, other than the individuals and the owners of the corporations. The fundamentals of free market economics require those individuals or corporations who succeed to be well rewarded and those who make poor decisions to be penalised or not rewarded with huge bonuses, bailouts, etc. During the Bush administrations receipts to the Treasury soared from lower tax rates and we had good growth and low inflation for seven years, but wasteful government spending soared as well, adding to the costs of the economic fall-out from 9/11 and the subsequent decision to counter-attack and liberate of 50 million Muslims, which has prevented another attack on the mainland, and providing foreign AID on HIV/AIDS, TB and malaria in particular, leading to the deficits. Then the financial crisis, brewing since the Carter administration and the Community Reinvestment Act, finally caught up with us. Gilbert wrote: The current financial crises has its roots in GREED on the part of the bank executives. In the US and the rest of the world, the bank execs/ lobbyists pressured their governments to loosen up bank regulations, permitting banks to expand beyond their original obligations and take on debt far in excess of reasonable risks. Such was the opinion of a no less a fiscal conservative - Alan Greenspan, former Fed Reserve Bank Chairman. Mario responds: This is false and apparently gleaned from liberal media reports. A brutally honest and far more informed analysis of the problem is provided in the following column by Stanford University economist Tom Sowell: http://www.realclearpolitics.com/articles/2008/10/do_facts_matter.html Excerpt: We also hear that it is the free market that is to blame. But the facts show that it was the government that pressured financial institutions in general to lend to subprime borrowers, with such things as the Community Reinvestment Act and, later, threats of legal action by then Attorney General Janet Reno if the feds did not like the statistics on who was getting loans and who wasn't. Is that the free market? Or do facts not matter? Then there is the question of being against the "greed" of CEOs and for "the people." Franklin Raines made $90 million while he was head of Fannie Mae and mismanaging that institution into crisis. Who in Congress defended Franklin Raines? Liberal Democrats, including Maxine Waters and the Congressional Black Caucus, at least one of whom referred to the "lynching" of Raines, as if it was racist to hold him to the same standard as white CEOs. Even after he was deposed as head of Fannie Mae, Franklin Raines was consulted this year by the Obama campaign for his advice on housing! The Washington Post criticized the McCain campaign for calling Raines an adviser to Obama, even though that fact was reported in the Washington Post itself on July 16th. The technicality and the spin here is that Raines is not officially listed as an adviser. But someone who advises is an adviser, whether or not his name appears on a letterhead. The tie between Barack Obama and Franklin Raines is not all one-way. Obama has been the second-largest recipient of Fannie Mae's financial contributions, right after Senator Christopher Dodd. But ties between Obama and Raines? Not if you read the mainstream media. Facts don't matter much politically if they are not reported. [end of excerpt] Ron Paul is just another politician who has no executive experience in managing anything, unlike the successful Governors like Palin and Jindal, Stanford and Pawlenty, Barbour and Perry.

--- On Fri, 2/6/09, Roland Francis wrote: Who cares about the broad spectrum of Indian society. They are not the ones who kill Christians and Muslims and thrash defenceless girls, throwing them to the ground. The writer is asking us to see the obvious. I would submit that what is obvious is actually this writer's failure to see that you don't need the broad spectrum to be violent. All you need is a few fruitcakes doing their thing and the police looking the other way. In fact the broad spectrum's opinions matter not a whit in India. According to this writer's logic if we give the Indian masses a lot more credit, then the killings of Christians and Muslims and the attacks on defenceless girls is not likely to happen again. Date: Fri, 6 Feb 2009 23:19:26 -0800 (PST) From: marlon menezes An immature child typically wants an immediate response or gratification from the adults around it. And that too seems to be Roland's behavior. Mario observes: This childish and mean-spirited response is like a pot calling the kettle black. Marlon wrote: Most individuals who have seen the video of the assault of the helpless woman would instinctively want immediate retribution, as is so obvious in Roland's synaptic response as well. This is obvious. Unlike him, I believe that Indian society is mature enough to deal with such transgressions. It will not happen right away, but it will happen. We must let justice take its course rather than feed the fires of communalism. Mario observes: Is it "immediate retribution" to demand that members and organisers of violent mobs be prosecuted and brought to justice? How is India's allegedly "mature society" dealing with such situations which are getting progressively worse with time? Years later, cases having to do with Babri Masjid and the Godhra massacre are still continuing to wend their way through the Indian legal system. More recent cases of mob violence will take years to prosecute, if at all, belieing any notion of "immediate retribution" or that India's "mature society" are exercising any influence over the pace of any progress. Indian society as a whole just seems happy to not be involved and have so far only expressed themselves by keeping the BJP and Shiv Sena out of more power because of their more extreme elements and blatantly communal positions. Marlon wrote: However, what I see in Roland's response is a high level of hypocrisy and duplicity. How can we expect the broader society "out there" to respond to the obvious transgressions taking place, when we remain silent to the bigotry happening in our midst on goanet? Mario observes: How does a cheap allegation that "we" are silent to any perceived bigotry taking place on Goanet lead to an accusation that Roland is hypocritical or duplicitous? Has Roland written anything that can be construed as bigotry, or is this yet another gratuitous, immature and mean-spirited comment? What has Marlon done, if anything, about the bigotry he blythely alleges on Goanet without mentioning any specifics? In my opinion, anything that smacks of bigotry on Goanet is immediately taken issue with by a number of other writers. Marlon wrote: More importantly, this is something we can actively challenge on this forum and make a difference. It seems to me that we are part of this same non responsive society that we seem to be decrying about now. Mario asks: Marlon, why don't you start by listing an example of the bigotry you are alleging, and respond to it?
[Goanet] Ram Sene men to burn pink chaddis.
http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/Ram-Sene-men-to-burn-pink-chaddis/articleshow/4132871.cms Ram Sene men to burn pink chaddis 15 Feb 2009, 2141 hrs IST, TNN Print Email Discuss Share Save Comment Text: HUBLI: The pink chaddis that became tools of non-violent resistance against moral policing will soon be burnt. The Sri Ram Sene wants to burn these embarrassing Valentine's Day gifts at a public place on Monday. "Some of our members are still in police custody. We will organize a public event once all are out," Sene spokesman Krishna Gandaghalekar said on Sunday. "Sending these chaddis to the leader of a patriotic organization is like insulting him. We will give a fitting reply by burning them." Gandaghalekar expects Sene leader Pramod Mutalik, now in the custody of the Gulbarga police, to be released by then and lead the protest. The Sene office remained locked for the third day on Sunday and no one could receive parcels of chaddis which were still coming in. "Some parcels should be pending with courier companies. We will burn them too," Gandaghalekar said. The Sene has changed its plans about the underwear three times in the last few days. First its leaders said these would be sent to an orphanage. Later, they said the parcels would be returned to the parents of the girls who had sent them. Then they said the parcels would be publicly auctioned. But on Sunday, they confirmed they'll burn them. Meanwhile, stung by the bad press that his government got over the last few weeks on moral policing, Karnataka chief minister B S Yeddyurappa gave vent to his displeasure at a public function on Sunday. "Is it a crime to talk about religion? Is it a crime to infuse patriotism in young minds?" he asked, while addressing a function of Sri Degula Mutt of Kanakapura in Ramnagaram district.
Re: [Goanet] Why the West's luck has run out - and why Canada and India's has begun
Date: Mon, 16 Feb 2009 16:16:44 -0800 (PST) From: Mervyn Lobo Marlon, The date on the above video, March 17, 2002 (St. Patrick's Day) has a special significance me and other gold bugs. I was in a pub in Napa Valley, California watching the faith based leader when the woman who was courting me said, "You know what, this guy is going to ruin the USA and the US dollar." That was the last day gold was at $292.00. The price of gold never returned to that price. In fact, it has tripled since. Coincidence? Mario observes: Is it coincidence, or the fourth explanation of how Mervyn picked the low price for gold way back then. As he explained in an exchange with Roland, the other three were, a) he looked at price charts in 2008 to find the low price of gold in 2002, b) he learned that all the central bankers, who are idiots by definition according to Mervyn, were selling gold, which told him he should be buying gold, and c) he figured out the low price of gold by working harder than everyone else, just like he did when catching more crabs than anyone else in Tanzania. Now we learn that he learned that gold would was at it's low point when being courted [???] by a woman in a pub in the Napa Valley:-)) Arre, vah! Kamaal hai! as they say in the slums in India. Mervyn wrote: As you know, all the major US banks have failed and are kept open today only because the US uses taxpayers money to support them. Mario responds: This is simply factually incorrect. To begin with there are some 7,600 banks in the US, in addition to over 8,000 credit unions. None of the banks have failed. Out of all these there were 116 banks that accepted federal bailout funds as of year-end 2008. If they had not been bailed out by the lurch towards socialism in the US most of the banks that had made bad decisions would have been acquired or merged with other banks, and their managers and stockholders would have paid the price as they should in a free market system, and the rest of the country would have been better off. Mervyn wrote: According to my newspapers today, the world is now looking to the socialist countries of Canada and Spain for the future of banking. Mario responds: Socialism has failed miserably in the long run wherever it has been tried. If socialism was the answer all its previous major proponents would not have relegated it to the thrash heap of history where it belongs. Marlon knows all this, or should, but, as we see once again, he is toothless in responding to balderdash by one of his cronies.
[Goanet] A toast to our Gujjus and the ever flying Gujju spirit!!! :-)
Gujjubhai was bragging to his boss one day "I know everyone there is to know. Just name someone, anyone, and I know them." Tired of his boasting, his boss called his bluff, "OK, how about Tom Cruise?" "Sure, yes, Tom and I are old friends, and I can prove it." So Gujjubhai and his boss fly out to Hollywood and knock on Tom Cruise's door, and sure enough, Tom Cruise shouts, "Gujju! Great to see you!" You and your friend come right in and join me for lunch!" Although impressed, Gujjubhai's boss is still sceptical. After they leave Cruise's house, he tells Gujjubhai that he thinks Gujjubhai's knowing Cruise was just lucky. "No, no, just name anyone else", Gujjubhai says. "President Obama", his boss quickly retorts. "Yes", Gujjubhai says, "I know him, let's fly out to Washington." And off they go.. At the President's house, Obama spots Gujjubai on the tour and motions him and his boss over, saying, "Gujju, what a surprise, I was just on my way to a meeting, but you and your friend come on in and let's have a cup of coffee first and catch up." Well, the boss is much shaken by now, but still not totally convinced. After they leave the house, he expresses his doubts to Gujjubhai who again implores him to name anyone else. "The Pope," his boss replies. "Sure!" says Gujjubhai. "My folks were in Poland, and I've known the Pope a long time". So off they fly to Rome. Gujjubhai and his boss are assembled with the masses in Vatican Square when Gujjubhai says "This will never work. I can't catch the Pope's eye among all these people. "Tell you what, I know all the guards so let me just go upstairs and I'll come out on the balcony with the Pope." And he disappears into the crowd headed toward the Vatican. Sure enough, half an hour later Gujjubhai emerges with the Pope on the balcony. But by the time Gujjubhai returns, he finds that his boss has had a heart attack and is surrounded by paramedics. Working his way to his boss' side, Gujjubhai asks him, "What happened?" His boss looks up and says, "I was doing fine until you and the Pope came out on the balcony and the man next to me said, "Who's that guy on the balcony with Gujjubhai?"

Did someone recently complain that the authorities were soft on Muslim fundamentalists in India? What the heck does the attached report sound like? Oh, I forgot! This is the backlash to the pampering of Muslims. Tsk, tsk, tsk! According to the perspicacious Marlon, in a recent scathing response to Roland, calls for nipping this in the bud would be synaptic and immature. He thundered darkly, "Most individuals who have seen the video of the assault of the helpless woman would instinctively want immediate retribution, as is so obvious in Roland's synaptic response as well. This is obvious. Unlike him, I believe that Indian society is mature enough to deal with such transgressions. It will not happen right away, but it will happen. Hasn't worked in 61 years, but, in India, everything takes time:-)) http://www.navhindtimes.com/story.php?story=2009021250 Excerpt: ONE can only marvel - if that's the word - at the breathtaking speed with which the Sangh Parivar has vitiated the social climate in state after state. Within months of taking power in Karnataka, it has unleashed savage repression and turned Mangalore into a Hindu Taliban bulwark, where women are attacked if they go to a bar, where Hindus must not mix with Muslims, and where there is no media freedom and free interaction among young men and women. The Sri Rama Sene led by Mr Pramod Mutalik has emerged as a menace. Karnataka has become the Gujarat of the South. [end of excerpt]
[Goanet] Where are the goddamed 'secularists' now?
A response to the following post on the GX Forum http://groups.yahoo.com/group/GoenchimXapotam/message/18507 My Response: I generally agree with Rajan's opinions on this. While the secular brigade has always been very vocal in condemning Hindu fundamentalism (and rightly so), they are strangely silent when it comes to condemning the fundamentalism in other religions. This duplicity often bothers me. There is hardly even a whisper that one can hear from them even when the principles of freedom of expression are being abused left, right and center by Islamic fundamentalists. Here's an interesting column by Vir Sanghvi that I had read some time back. This column perfectly exposes the double standards of the Indian secular brigade. Please do read it. http://tinyurl.com/dx3oaq Cheers Sandeep

[Goanet] 'Peaceful March' my a$$...
According to a press communiqué issued by the management of the Cidade de Goa hotel, on February 16 about '900 employees, associates and family members of the hotel marched peacefully to Raj Bhavan to call upon the Governor, the Chief Minister and the Leader of the Opposition to save their livelihoods'. Before one unnecessarily sheds tears for the Timblos, this 'peaceful march' follows the Supreme Court ordering Cidade de Goa to demolish their illegal constructions encroaching on a public beach that the hotel has clandestinely tried to keep private for years, refusing passage through the hotel lobby (as is their right), but also sealing off public access to the traditional road that goes down to the beach. Which agitation in Goa – and these are growing in number – would not have wished for this kind of orchestration? The Governor, the Chief Minister and the Leader of the Opposition conveniently at hand to receive a memorandum. 200 odd employees of the hotel and students from the Academy of Culinary Education (an illegal construction) joined by 'associates' (who could be truck drivers from the mines for all we know) and 'family members' to make up the numbers. Not a single lathi charge. Not a single old woman put in the lock-up, not one woman abused by police officers in the pay of a mining company, not a single villager harassed by cops as happened in Collomb. No defamation case. Civilized politics. The Chief Minister, as only to be expected, played for time. He made sympathetic noises and promised to study the situation. The Leader of the Opposition, given his propensity to take over space with his mouth, did exactly that. The Herald quotes him say saying 'It is a simple matter. The legislature should act and I will fully support so that so many jobs are protected. We cannot afford to lose jobs in the time of recession'. So what is he saying exactly, that the Legislature should act by overthrowing a Supreme Court order? Not to be outdone, support for this farce was also extended by Taleigao MLA and Education Minister Babush Monserrate who the Herald quotes as saying 'The government must do all it can to prevent demolition. The resort provides many jobs in the constituency and I will support any effort to avoid the breaking down of any part of the hotel which will lead to job losses.' It is all very funny if it wasn't so sad. The Cidade de Goa memorandum states that 'the Court has ordered that an integral part of the resort be demolished' and pleads with the governor 'to intervene within the constitutional framework and help us to avoid this demolition, which will save us our jobs and livelihood'. For 'integral' above read 'illegal', read that the Timblos knew exactly what laws they were flaunting and why, and how their business prospered, read that within the constitutional framework when the Supreme Court of this land passes an order it must be respected. In any civilized country, the Timblo-led 'peaceful march' would have been seen as contempt for the constitution.
[Goanet] How bad is the Economy?
How Bad is the Economy? Pretty bad! Especially when conservatives who are against BIG government talk about nationalizing banks. Does it not sound like a Latin American country? See what financial whiz - George Soros has to say: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/george-soros/a-plan-for-economic-recov_b_166518.html "The size of the problem is even larger than it was in the 1930s. This can be seen from a simple calculation. Total credit outstanding was 160 percent of GDP in 1929, and it rose to 260 percent in 1932 due to the accumulation of debt and the decline of GDP. We entered into the Crash of 2008 at 365 percent, which is bound to rise to 500 percent or more by the time the full effect is felt. And this calculation does not take into account the pervasive use of derivatives, which was absent in the 1930s but immensely complicates the current situation. The situation has been further aggravated by the haphazard and arbitrary way in which it was handled by the Bush administration. The public and the business community suffered a shock in the aftermath of the Lehman Brothers default, and the economy has fallen off a cliff. The next two quarters will show rapid deterioration." Dear Goanetters, I have said it before and I would like to say it again, Mr. Arwin Mesquita deserves all the praise for his dedication to the cause of Goa and Goans, amongst all his busy schedules he always seems to find time for our cause. He was instrumental in starting a signature campaign that had a good response from fellow NRG's here in the UAE and world wide. [Goanet] Much-awaited Goa Tiatr Academy opens today
Much-awaited Goa Tiatr Academy opens today Tomazinho says it will help improve artistes’ performance The inauguration of the much-awaited Goa Tiatr Academy on Monday will mark yet another chapter in the 117-year-old history of Konkani Tiatr – the most popular drama form in the State. GUILHERME ALMEIDA takes a look at the aims and objectives of Tiatr Academy and finds out from the President of the Academy, Tomazinho Cardozo the significance of the institution. A glance at the Constitution of Goa Tiatr Academy reveals that the Academy aims at fostering and developing Tiatr and its dances, music, song and literature, more particularly Konkani literature in Roman Script The Academy is expected to play an important role to encourage the setting up of institutions to impart training in the art of Tiatr, including instruction in acting, direction, stage setting, light effects, sound effects, Tiatr music, script writing, production of lays and all other aspects related to Tiatr. Says President of Goa Tiatr Academy, Tomazinho Cardozo: “No doubt, Tiatrs have survived without official support in the Portuguese era and the post-Liberation period. But the Academy offers big scope to bring further improvement in this theatre form of art by raising the standard on par with other forms of art”. Promoting Tiatr and carrying out research in the field of Tiatr, its music, dances, songs and literature is another important function the Academy will perform, besides encouraging exchange of ideas and techniques between various part of Goa with regard to dance, music, song and literature related to Tiatr. Another notable objective of the Academy is to publish literature and establish a library and museum. The Academy will establish and maintain its own model institutions for studies and research work in Tiatr and its dance, music, song and literature. Encouragement in the development of dramatic activities in Children’s Tiatr in its various forms and promoting cultural exchanges in the field of Tiatr and its dance, music, song and literature with other States, and organizing Tiatr Festivals are amongst the host of objectives of the Goa Tiatr Academy. The Academy will assist meritorious organizations working in the field of Tiatr and encourage and assist production of new Tiatr by awarding prizes and distinctions. What Goa Tiatr Academy President Tomazinho Cardozo has to say on the Academy. Excerpts. How do you feel over the inauguration of the Academy? I am happy and glad that the Tiatr Academy is finally taking shape. It should have happened long ago. Credit must go to Chief Minister, Digambar Kamat as he not just promised the Academy, but fulfilled the promise. In what way would the Academy give a boost to the Tiatr in Goa? Tiatr is a popular form of art in Goa. Despite commercial success, the Tiatr is not well developed as far as stage settings, acting, directions, light effects is concerned. The Academy would hold workshops and seminars to the artistes to further improve their performance on stage. Do you have special scheme in mind to tap hidden talent through the Academy? Yes. A decade-and-half ago, Tiatr produced and directed by local villagers was part and parcel of village Feasts. Today, this is not so. We have to revive this long tradition through a scheme to encourage villagers to produce Tiatr and in the process tap the hidden talents. It is said that the Government grant of Rs 15 lakhs is a small amount considering the work that lies ahead of the Academy. The Rs 15 lakh grant is an initial grant. I am confident that the Government would sanction more grants to implement schemes and program worked out by the Academy. What is your message on the occasion of the inauguration of the Academy? My message is simple. All Tiatr artistes should come together and support the Goa Tiatr Academy in order to protect and preserve the Tiatr for posterity. o heraldo
[Goanet] The idea of indignation
Sandeep writes: > When the "Da Vinci Code" movie was released in India, fundamentalist > Christian groups from all parts of the Country flocked together to > pressurize the various State Governments to ban the movie. > > The bottom line is all fundamentalists pose equal threats to basic > secular, liberal and democratic values of a modern compatible society. > The State needs to clamp down on fundamentalists of all hues. We have > had enough of the carrot treatment. Each one of them needs to be given > the stick now. Date: Sun, 8 Feb 2009 20:45:15 -0800 (PST) From: Samir Kelekar I agree with Sandeep that the state has to be ruthless to all kinds of fundamentalists. And the Congress govt. is guilty of handling Muslim fundamentalists with kid gloves. And this then makes the people sympathetic to the Hindu fundamentalists. One needs to be equally ruthless to all kinds of fundamentalists, even if it means losing power at that point. In the long term, such a stand will pay due rewards. Mario asks: Doesn't the idea of bogus indignation cut both ways? In this post we see the word "fundamentalist" blythely used as a pejorative, a notion I will challenge and qualify. We see Sandeep and Samir indignant about so-called "fundamentalists", with Samir alleging that the Congress Party handles Muslim "fundamentalists" with kid gloves, which he then says makes people sympathetic to Hindu "fundamentalists", a connection that does not compute in my mind. Unless I'm missing something, any right-minded reaction in this case should be against the Congress Party and not in favor of other "fundamentalists". The last time I checked two wrongs don't make a right. BTW, is someone in a democracy who protests a movie a "fundamentalist", or just someone exercising their constitutional right of free speech and assembly?? The principle of free speech also applies to these so-called fundamentalists, just as it applies to anyone else, doesn't it? Webster's describes "fundamentalist" as "a movement or attitude stressing strict and literal adherence to a set of basic principles." Based on this definition, I could call at least three or four members of Goanet "atheist fundamentalists". However, I will refrain from doing so because that is their right:-)) Why are someone's fundamental beliefs a problem in any mature society? I don't think fundamentalists per se present any threat to anyone in a free society UNLESS they let their beliefs intersect with the property or skin of others. I grew up with Hindus in MP who stressed "strict and literal adherence to a set of basic principles", but respected my adherence to my principles, treated me like a brother, and would not hurt a fly. The problem is not fundamentalism but violence in the cases of Gujarat, Orissa, MP, Bihar and Karnataka, and illegal conversions of people against their will in cases where Christians are doing so. I think Samir simply forgot to mention that the BJP can be accused of handling violent Hindu "fundamentalists" with kid gloves:-)) Notice, I used the qualifier "violent", which the original article posted by Marshall was all about.
[Goanet] Rare gliding lizard found at Valpoi
-- Samir Umarye BICHOLIM FEB 16: A beautiful Southern Gliding Lizard stuck in the grease inside the irrigation department's pump house at Murmunem, Guleli, was rescued by wildlife activists on Saturday evening. "It could not move as it got stuck in the grease of the pump," Amrut Singh of Animal Rescue Squad (ARS) told on Monday, adding "Luckily, it did not suffer any injuries." Draco dussumieri or gliding lizard or draco as it is referred to was rescued by Anand Melekar, a member of the Bicholim-based, ARS after he received a call from an Irrigation department employee, Dananjay Naik. The lizard was a female and was about 10 cms in length. "Whenever we tried keeping it on a tree, it changed its colours after some time," Singh said. "Lizards of maximum 230 mm length have been found," he said. The Draco is found in the western ghats and is also found in Goa in sanctuary areas. "However, it is rare to see one," Singh said. It is known to survive on ants. The colour on its wings makes it beautiful in appearance. It is greyish-brown above, and it has often dark circles on its back. "We released the lizard on Sunday after taking its photographs," Singh said. It was released in the dense forest near Valpoi. "It sped away and disappeared the moment it was set free," he added.

Marlon, No country, ever, has created wealth by printing more money while reducing taxes. I have plenty of $1 bets saying that the US exercise will end up exactly the way the Zimbabwe experiment did. Secondly, I am with you and all those who say that Obama (blessed be, his name) is not the messiah. His name says it all. Lastly, near zero interest rates does not encourage people to save. Without savings, there is no wealth. Those who do not understand this will remain economically challenged. When the official economic policy of a country is to effectively discourage people from saving, all I have to say is, "God bless the country." Mervyn1650Lobo __ Yahoo!
