[Goanet] The Revolutionary Abbot by Dr. Mikhail Buyanov, President, Moscow Psychotherapeutic Academy

*The Revolutionary Abbot*

by Dr. Mikhail Buyanov, President, Moscow Psychotherapeutic Academy

(This article is excerpted from a chapter in the book *Child Psychiatry and
You* by Dr. Mikhail Buyanov published by Mir Publishers, Moscow. It is a
ringing tribute by Dr. Buyanov to the life and work of Abbe Faria, Goa’s
father of Scientific Hypnotism whose birth anniversary falls on May 31.)

A good word can cure a person, while an evil word can make a person sick. A
word can send a thousand of soldiers into battle while another word can make
millions stoop in mourning.

Psychotherapy includes over seventy treatment techniques one of them being
hypnosis, which is a special kind of remedial suggestion. The first 100 –
125 years of psychotherapy is in fact, the history of hypnosis because
hypnosis was a synonym for psychotherapy for many years.

The place of Abbot Faria in the system of psychotherapeutic knowledge was
defined by Kannabikh in his classic *History of Psychiatry* (Moscow, 1929,
in Russian) : “Mesmer 1734-1815) who was born in Vienna presented his theory
of ‘ animal magnetism’ in Paris in about 1780. According to the theory, the
body of the magnetizer emanates a special fluid that is transmitted by the
passing of hands across the face or a slight touch to the body of the
patient and brings a curative effect. Mesmer’s pupil Puysegur (1751-1825)
observed the phenomenon of somnambulism induced in some people by the ‘
magnetic passes’. The next step was the observation by the Portuguese (sic)
scholar Faria that if he looked intently at a person for several minutes
while repeatedly ordering him to sleep this will induce a state of
somnambulism. This technique was presented in a book by Faria in 1819.”

Reliable data on the Abbot de Faria are occasional and contradictory. There
are more myths and conjectures about him than exact information. It is
difficult and sometimes impossible to separate the truth from fantasy. A
collection of the grains of trustworthy data yields the following biography
of the Abbot.

He was born in 1756 near Panaji, now the principal city of the Indian state
of Goa. Caetano de Faria, his father, was a descendant of an Indian Brahmin
who was converted to Roman Catholicism. The son was Christened José
Custodio. When he was 15 years old his father took him to Lisbon where they
spent several months before going to Italy. Jose Custodio de Faria
enrolled at the Theological department and became a Doctor of Theology in
1780.

Having completed their education father and son returned to Portugal. The
father became confessor to the King and the Queen and the son was made a
priest in the royal Chapel. They fled from Lisbon to Paris in 1788 having
supposedly been involved in a plot to separate Goa from Portugal.

In Paris, they both pursued clerical activities but they did not please the
authorities and the son was imprisoned in the Bastille. He spent several
months there. One of his guard was fond of playing draughts; however, each
game lasted a short time and had to be started again. Jose Custodio de Faria
often played with this guard and , to prolong the pleasure, he invented the
100-square draughts. This was his first contribution to history.

On July 14 1789, Parisian rebels occupied the Bastille. Whether or not Faria
was imprisoned there at the time is unknown. One thing is clear: he was an
enthusiastic supporter of the Revolution and headed a detachment of
sansculottes.
He seems to have devoted himself entirely to his political activities.
Having exchanged the cross for the sword he fought on the side of the
Revolutionary troops and became famous as a victorious commander.

However, there were negative aspects to the policy pursued by some of the
leaders of the revolution. Terror became absolute and a universal suspicion
was cultivated: every foreigner was suspected of being an enemy of the
revolution. The fact that Faria was not French was clear to anyone who saw
his dark complexion, Indian appearance and heard his guttural speech. To
save himself from the Terror the Abbot de Faria fled to the South of France.
He is said to have become a member of a Medical Society in Marseilles, to
have been a Professor at the Marseilles Academy and to have taught in a
local high school. Faria, who was working as an assistant teacher at a High
School in Nimes was also arrested. He was taken to Marseilles in a barred
police carriage and sent to the Chateau d’If by a Law Court. He was shut up
in solitary confinement in Chateau d’If thus doomed to a lingering and
agonizing death.

Then aged 40, Faria could have expected to spend the rest of his life in
captivity until either he died or went mad. However circumstances intervened
but to explain them, we must go back in time before the 1789-1794 French
Revolution.

A short while before the Bastille was stormed, Franz Anton Mesmer appeared
in Paris. He was a tall handsome man who was rumored to be a magi

Dear Tony,
Goan cooks are well renowned. It was Goan cooks working onboard ships that
created a brand name for Goans. When Richard Burton put together his second
expedition into Africa, he ensured there were two Goan cooks onboard. Their
names escape me now. Of late, Floyd Cardoz has been doing Goans proud on the
international scene.

Goan cops on the other hand are also known all over the world. One of the
newspapers carried an item yesterday that they stoped a car carrying tourists,
returning from dinner and wouldn't let it go, until they were handed a Rs500
note. Note to all tourists, please carry Rs500 in your pocket at all times.
This is a government tax issued on point-of-sale.

Unfortunately Goan cooks and Goan cops are known world-wide for entirely
different reasons.

Best,
selma

Moves afoot to scrap BSNL's Telecom Advisory Committees
--
In a move that could have an impact on telecom services
provided by the state-owned Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd,
moves are reportedly afoot to scrap the Telecom Advisory
Committees (TAC) all over the nation. The CMD of BSNL
has reportedly called for a report from BSNL’s circle heads
(Chief General Managers) and has sought details of existing
TAC’s, expenditure incurred on them including individually
(TA/DA, free phone connection, etc), date of its constitution
and tenures.

According to the Goa telecom website, the last TAC committee
of Goa telecom district was with 18 members, which included
3 sitting and 2 ex-MPs (appointed for the period from January
1, 2007 to December 31, 2008). The TAC committee consisted
of Rajya Sabha MP Shantaram Naik, South Goa MP Francisco
Sardinha, North Goa MP Shripad Naik, PWD Minister Churchill
Alemao, former MP John Fernandes, Victor Diniz (Quepem),
Gurudas Bhalchandra Natekar (Mapusa), Artur Sequira
(Dona Paula), Altinho Gomes (Cuncolim), Madhav Manohar
Dhond (Panjim), Dattaprasad Kholkar (Mapusa), Govind Parvatkar
(Porvorim), Manohar Chandru Adpaikar (Ponda), Urmila Lotlikar
(Ponda), Joaquim De Costa (Colva), Agnelo Fernandes (Benaulim),
Fredrick Socorro Borges (Assolna) and Joe Francisco Rebello
(Benaulim).

It is reportedly learnt that responding to the demand made by staff
union at New Delhi, BSNL’s Chairman-cum-Managing Director
(CMD) sought the details of TAC’s from all circle heads in an
apparent move to prepare ‘a case’ to be forwarded to Department
of Telecommunications (DOT) for discontinuing the existing practice
of TACs in BSNL (now an public sector undertaking).

The practice of having TAC’s at each telecom district was started
to improve the customer-management relationship, way-back when
telecommunications were the sole proprietary concern of DOT.

With the telecom sector now thrown open to private players as well,
BSNL is the only service provider which continues to have TAC’s,
while others (telecom service providers) doesn’t have such provisions,
reportedly drawing/inviting suggestions from staff unions to scrap the
practice in BSNL.

[Goanet] Preparing for the Monsoons - By Clinton Vaz

2009-05-29 Thread Clinton Vaz
The monsoons should arrive soon. Clinton Vaz suggests a few pre-monsoon
tips to keeping your compost and recycling going through this monsoon season

Yesterday morning, as I woke up and stepped out to get the papers, I
felt some tiny drops on me, and then the smell of wet earth. The
unmistakable smell of the arriving monsoon. Now this is a typical Goa
smell that one can smell only at the start of the monsoons, especially
in the villages.

At this time of the year, everybody is busy preparing for the monsoons,
a season of rainfall that could last for the next 4-5 months. Heavy
rainfall can be paralyzing. The heaviest showers could be worse than
standing under a shower, as the size and speed of the rain drops are
sure enough to wet you to the bone in 10 second’s flat! But life in Goa
still goes on, people get to work on time (mostly), houses leak a
little, people still visit friends and the only change around is the
raincoats and umbrellas that everybody carries.

But right now, in May, everybody’s busy getting roofs waterproofed, clay
tiles replaced, and roofs ‘stitched’. Clothes lines are being restrung
within homes and car wipers being fixed for the arriving rain.
Similarly, you need to get a few things done for your composting and
recycling too.

Harvest your Compost
Its harvest season folks! Try and harvest all the compost that you can
over the next weekend! Drying compost in the monsoon is tricky, so dig
deep and extract all the ready compost that you can from your composting
unit. This freshly removed compost needs to be sun-dried before it’s
sieved, so use the last few sunny days for that. Compost that’s sieved
may be kept out in the rain, but a lot of its nutrient value would get
leached away with the rain. Therefore, placing a plastic sheet over and
under the pile would be a good idea. However, packing up your compost in
sacks and storing it in a shaded area would be a better idea if you have
the space.

Preparing for Monsoon Composting!
Composting in the monsoon is slightly different, especially in the peak
of the monsoons, because of the high moisture content in the air. Too
much moisture is not desirable as it extends the time required for
composting to occur. Make sure that your compost bin has a waterproof
roof above it. If that’s not possible, you could place a lid over the
bin to reduce the direct impact of rain. You might also need side walls
installed if your composting station exists in an open area. Look out
for the direction in witch the rain comes from and place your anti-rain
defenses in that way. The pre-monsoon showers would test your defenses,
and you could make minor adjustments before the actual monsoons arrive.

Within the actual compost bin, you need a constant supply of dry
absorbent material like leaves, or saw-dust to absorb the liquid matter
from kitchen wet waste. This also helps balance the CN ratio. Since it
is difficult to find dry leaves in the monsoons, you could stockpile dry
leaves for the monsoons (for at least a couple of months) in a dry
storage area. Pack your leaves in a gunny sack and then use it for the
monsoons. In case you can’t do this, replace your leaves with bits of
waste paper as your dry absorbent material during the monsoon season.

Make sure that your compost bin has good drainage. Excess moisture has
to be drained away, so test this by pouring a bucketful of water and
make the necessary adjustments. If your bin has a lower leachate
collection unit, then make sure that the openings are not blocked and
that you remember to empty the excess liquid at more frequent intervals
once the rains arrive.

Recycling & the Monsoons
Make sure that your current stockpile of recycled materials is emptied
at the recyclers. Unless you have waterproof containers, make sure that
you move all your recycling bins to a dry area. Recyclable waste
categories like paper, and cardboard tend to absorb moisture and gain
weight. This means that these items simply weigh more than their actual
weight. To compensate for this extra weight, recyclers often offer lower
than usual rates for these items in the monsoons.

Plastic, Metal and Glass containers, and rubber tyres that are kept
facing upwards collect rainwater and then encourage mosquitoes to breed,
thereby increasing the chances for spread of vector borne diseases. To
avoid this from happening, it would be a good idea to walk around your
house, and around your garden and collect all your recyclable waste and
place it in one area and make sure it gets recycled before the rains arrive.

Once you have done all this, you can grab and armchair, and put up your
feet and enjoy the rain… or the afternoon breeze with a mancurad mango,
until the rains arrive!

2009-05-29 Thread Gabriel de Figueiredo

Joe,

Not quite sure, but going on a hunch it could be a Portuguese hymn, which over
the years may have got to where it is (rather like Catarina which has become
Kotrin):

Exaltemos com alegria
Milagrosa, milagrosa, milagrosa Santa Cruz

The rest is too garbled to make sense.  Hope some one else recognizes the
hymn/words

Regards,

Gabriel.

Exultemus coi alegria

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y9T2H_SiZnk

I remember this hymn (Saints special) was sung during the feast day or
on special occasions like Baptism, wedding, birthdays etc In Salcette.

The whole hymn/lyrics is about 2-3 lines but it was dragged on
repeatedly to make it look like a long one

e.g. .
EXULTEMUS COI ALEGRIA (whole line repeated 3 times and ‘coi alegria’ 6 times
per verse)

MILAGROS,  MILAGROS, MILAGROS DE SANTA CRUZ  (or Sant Anton, Sant Francis etc)

Finally, third time..
ELA VOS, ELA VOS, ELA VOS DE SANT  TODOS SANTOS (All the saints?)

It has second part
O VIVA  VIVA  VIVA  VIVA
EMA  ENO  CREO (again these 3 words repeated several time)

The whole hymn is of say 4 lines but dragged on or repeated to last over five
minutes

I don’t know if the same is sung in rest of Goa.

Any one?

It goes like this (watch the second part of this clip)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y9T2H_SiZnk

the above was captured while travelling from Majorda to Agxi via Velsao

I am curious to know what  EMA, ENO and CREO means?
(I know I could be wrong in saying/spelling EMA, ENO, CREO, ELA VOS etc

I checked in on the net but I could not find any thing,  All I found was
EXULTEMUS COI ALEGRIA, and corrected the spelling accordingly.

The first part of the clip is ‘Regina..’

[Goanet] Time to put sense into Goan women

2009-05-29 Thread Samir Kelekar

It is time to put some sense into Goan women. The way they have gone off with
Mahanand, the killer just on a promise of marriage means that there needs to be
a lot of sense drilled into them. Each of them paid with their lives. Did they
inquire about Mahanand at all, before they decided to move with him ? Did they
inquire about his past, his occupation, whethe he was married or not, what his
character was like?

Surely Godess Kamakshi is not going to put this sense into them. Or going
for even hundreds of umas is not going to increase the cells in their
brains any more.

One of my mentors called marriage as an institution for copulation. Though
I may not agree with him fully, it is important to bust the myth about
the institution of marriage especially in places like Goa where divorce
is considered anathema.

regards,
Samir

from Manipur, Karnataka and Goa, sources said. The
girls were later sent to the government-run remand home
at Merces.

The two persons arrested under Prevention of Immoral
Traffic Act (PITA) include a 23-year old Manipuri who
gave his name as Aaayen; the other person apprehended
by the police is a middle-aged woman from Arpora.

While the tourist season as far as foreign tourism is concerned,
is virtually over, domestic tourists have been visiting Goa in a
big way in the last two months or so, sources said.

Some time ago, a case was registered against a massage parlour in
Porvorim. The police suspect that there are many such much -publicised
massage parlours where other activities including nefarious ones, are
noticed. But when a raid on any parlour is reported, those indulging
in rackets, are alerted and go underground or take a cautious approach
to hoodwink the cops. Some parlours promote themselves through the
Internet.

[Goanet] Only In Bharat

2009-05-29 Thread Roland Francis
Growing up in Bombay, I used to enjoy the Busybee column in the daily
Evening News. Behram Contractor was equivalent to today's American
Jerry Seinfeld. He wrote about mundane things in Bombay and yet each
day's column was quite absorbing.

There was another columnist or writer who wrote a column called "Only
in Bharat". It was about such outlandlish actual events which were
nevertheless true, that the author thought it could happen only in
India. Not to be taken too seriously since such things happen all over
the world, it was a parody of life in that era.

This reward to Bablu as reported by Uday Barad would be a fitting
contribution to such a column.

Here is the Central Railway announcer made famous for his heroic act,
who under great danger to himself warned people in the entire station
of the two terrorists. He warns another announcer who then promptly
gets 10 lakh rupees from the Railway Minister while he himself has to
make an application to get his bravery recognized for which he gets
500 rupees from a lowly divisional manager.

I am inspired to start "Only in Bharat" on Goanet. Readers are welcome
to send their contributions by email to me. I shall quite willingly
give them credit for their contribution. They are also welcome to post
them direct to Goanet.

Roland.

FULL TEXT:

Cyber activism is here
By Ishaan Rai
527 words
29 May 2009
DNA - Daily News & Analysis (Lifestyle & Leisure section).

Frederick Norohna's workshop aims at producing some of the most interesting
e-campaigns

Did a Pink Chaddi inspire you to resist moral policing against women? Or did
you Bell Bajao to take a stand against domestic violence? If there's a
social issue you feel strongly about, what better way to raise awareness and
garner support than the Internet! In a unique workshop by journalist
Frederick Norohna, you will get the chance to combine the techie and the
activist within you to create thought-provoking and effective e-campaigns.

The workshop, organised by the Centre for Communication and Development
Studies (CCDS), will focus on both the technical aspects of using internet
tools and on developing a campaign. Frederick says, "Cyber activism is
applying the potential of cyberspace and the internet into activism - it's
not rocket science." Using websites like Facebook, Twitter and Youtube, you
can generate awareness, advocacy and action about specific social issues.
Frederick reveals, "The net has become extremely user-friendly. You can do
almost everything on your own - a blog can be created in two minutes by
anyone. Something like Twitter can be used for a frivolous purpose like
making dinner plans and something serious like a social campaign."

Mainly aimed at members of NGOs, the workshop will explore copyleft-based
models of sharing information. Frederick explains, "Copyleft is all about
sharing content, it's the opposite of copyright. Collaborating has to
develop and people have to start sharing information. NGOs are sitting on
goldmines of information, and when you link that with the internet, the
information will reach more and more people."

Another aspect of the workshop will be to promote the use of mailing lists.
Frederick says, "They're easy to set up through Google and Yahoo, and help
send messages to an entire group." Currently he runs a couple of mailing
lists, including Goanet, which has about 13,000 readers everyday. Frederick
says, "We send people news and discuss issues - sometimes the discussions
are really interesting. The list should have a focus - Goanet only deals
with issues in and related to Goa. Basically it's like a 24/7 meeting which
never stops!"

Frederick has been involved with dozens of e-campaigns over the years. He
says, "I'm completely self-trained - I'm not a techie. A total of four weeks
in elementary level stuff is all the training I've had. I tried to mix my
interest in technology with my interest in development and journalism."

Now a professional at what he does, it goes to show how all it takes to be a
cyber-activist is a little will and effort. Frederick reveals, "Activism
isn't about raising slogans and screaming our heads off - it's about
fighting intelligently. E-campaigns are extremely effective, they just take
a little time to gain attention and support. The main challenge for
participants of the workshop will be to use what they've learnt once it's
over - that's where the real work begins!"

(The workshop will be held it Pune on Friday-Saturday, from 2pm to 6pm, at
Open Space.) See http://openspaceindia.org/May09_events_act.html

[Goanet] Indians dominate US National Spelling Bee

2009-05-29 Thread Mario Goveia

http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,522705,00.html

Excerpt:

Cool and collected, Kavya Shivashankar wrote out every word on her palm and
always ended with a smile. The 13-year-old Kansas girl saved the biggest smile
for last, when she rattled off the letters to "Laodicean" to become the
nation's spelling champion.

The budding neurosurgeon from Olathe, Kan., outlasted 11 finalists Thursday
night to win the Scripps National Spelling Bee, taking home more than $40,000
in cash and prizes and, of course, the huge champion's trophy.

Click here to see photos from the event.

After spelling the winning word, which means lukewarm or indifferent in
religion or politics, Kavya got huge hugs from her father, mother and little
sister.

Kavya was making her fourth appearance at the bee, having finishing 10th,
eighth and fourth over the last three years. She enjoys playing the violin,
bicycling, swimming and learning Indian classical dance, and her role model is
Nupur Lala, the 1999 champion featured in the documentary "Spellbound."

Second place went to 12-year-old Tim Ruiter of Centreville, Va., the only
non-teenager in the finals. He misspelled "maecenas," which means a cultural
benefactor.

Aishwarya Pastapur, 13, from Springfield, Ill., who loved to pump her arm and
exclaim "Yes!" after getting a word correct, finished third after flubbing
"menhir", a type of monolith.

[Goanet] Rajapur Ganga arrived on May 28

2009-05-29 Thread SHRIKANT BARVE

The event that everyone was waiting has finally come. Rajapur Ganga has arrived
on May 28, 2009. If you want to witness this phenomenon, you are advised to
visit it as soon as possible.

This well-known holy spot near Rajapur has fourteen kundas, which are dry
throughout the year. There is not a single drop of water in it. During rainy
season too they remain dry. Approximately after every 3 years , Ganga appears
here and the same kundas are filled with water and a huge celebration starts
here. People from all over country come here to see this phenomenon. Once the
Ganga comes it last at least for a month and then it dries again there isn’t a
drop of water. This is really a great wonder of nature. If tourists want to
witness this wonder they should come here after Ganga’s arrival. You can visit
'Event' menu in this website to see when Gana arrives.

It is possible to notice difference between dry and full kundas if one can see
them before Ganga’s appearance. Bath in these kundas is regarded as holy act.
After Ganga’s appearance thousands of pilgrims gather here. Rajapur is
well-known all over because of this Ganga.

Getting There:

3 k.m. from Rajapur. Nearest railway station is Rajapur.

Very close to Mumbai-Goa highway.

Private vehicles, autos are available from Rajapur.

[Goanet] Black Majik & Disappearing Tigers By Clinton Vaz

2009-05-29 Thread Clinton Vaz

http://klintvaz.blogspot.com/2009/05/black-majik-and-disappearing-tigers.html

Black Majik and Disappearing Tigers

The Tiger Killing should not be forgotten, and those that are guilty
need to be punished as this incident is linked to a number of human
versus animal conflicts in Goa says Clinton Vaz

On a late Monday evening, I sat down with some friends at a Panjim cafe
to unwind. Coming from wildlife circles, it was but natural to talk
about recent wildlife activities, such as the Frog Campaign that is
underway, however, we soon started to talk about the tiger that was
killed in Keri recently.

Goa might have now acquired a reputation for mysterious and unsolved
murder cases with the Scarlet, Mahaanand and Russian cases; however,
it's not the police investigating the tiger murder, but the Goa Forest
Department. And from what I’ve followed in the press, the investigating
team is working in the right direction, having detained 4 people
already. But let's not focus on the Forest Department as they need to
investigate on their own. What about the village that was involved? What
about the tiger?

There are many wrongs that have to be righted. It now appears that human
versus animal conflicts are becoming more common in the hinterland of
Goa. An increasing population over the years, destruction of forested
areas for the purpose of planting orchards and plantations are already
causing habitat reduction to the wild animals in the state. Making
matters worse for predating wild animals, is the illegal poaching that
goes on rampantly on the fringes of Goa's forests. Poaching of prey-base
animals like the barking deer and sambar have only worsened the human
versus animal conflicts. Take just this current month of May as an example:

On the 7th of May, wild elephants strayed into the villages of Vadaval
and Amthane in Bicholim, destroying cashew plantations and paddy fields.
The very next day, the 8th of May, two wild elephants destroyed farm and
plantation property in another village, Alorna. Then on 12th of May, a
Vasco based doctor came in close contact with a 4-foot leopard that
grazed his vehicle as it strayed across the airport highway. On the 14th
of May, a Malabar Giant Squirrel that was injured by a gun shot strayed
into a plantation in Soliye hamlet at Honda- Sattari. The animal was
rescued and rehabilitated by the Animal Rescue Squad (ARS). However, the
most shocking incident occurred on 19th of May, when Uday Devgo a 40
year of resident of Dhave in Sattari was attacked by a Spotted Leopard
as he got out of his home to rescue his dog being attacked by the same
leopard. There probably were many more human-animal conflicts that were
not reported in the press as well.

While driving out the elephants and trapping and translocation of the
big cats offer temporary solutions, the long term solution to prevent
such instances is to have a healthy forest, with enough prey-base for
the animals not to stay out in hunger and desperation. At one such
recent human-animal conflict site, Amrut Singh from the ARS appealed to
the villagers that trapping the troublesome Leopard was no solution.
Instead, he suggested, stop the killings of prey-base animals like the
Sambar Deer, Mouse Deer, Wild Boar, etc. that are now routine happenings
in Goa’s hinterland.

Many people residing in the villages that dot fringes of forest
sanctuaries routinely set traps and hunt animals with illegal guns. The
possession of illegal firearms for the purpose of hunting is rampant in
the hinterland of Goa. Something needs to be done about this. However,
most of the animals caught are not shot, but trapped instead. Using
snares such as wire traps, they ensure that the animal is kept alive
until the hunter arrives at the trap site (to keep the meat fresh).

I have also heard of trappers that are so cold blooded that once they
have confirmed that they have an animal caught in their traps, they
break the legs of the live animal to immobilize it and then go into town
looking for orders for the meat. Once getting orders, and taking an
advance, they return to slaughter the animal, making sure it's alive
till the last bit to ensure the meat is fresh. This just shows how some
of us have degenerated into cruel beings with a complete disregard for life.

Getting back to the tiger killing, facts are also established that the
tiger killed was killed in Sattari, Goa and not Dandeli in Karnataka as
claimed earlier. It now appears that these tiger was grievously injured
after accidentally stepping into a wire trap laid by the villagers for a
deer. As the tiger was of no use to the villagers, it was then shot in
cold blood with many eyewitnesses, one who actually photographed the
incident. Fortunately for wildlife protection enthusiasts, it was this
photograph that got the skeletons tumbling out of the wardrobe.

I have no idea what the first part of the above question means. Any properly
scientifically tested and validated medicine approved for ethical use, by
definition, has to be more effective than a placebo, irrespective whether it is
expensive or inexpensive. Alternative rituals that have not been tested for
safety and efficacy in randomized placebo-controlled trials are by the same
token of questionable utility.

The term placebo effect is a misnomer. There is no specific and predictable
"effect" of placebos. Which patient (or whether a patient) on a placebo would
show improvement or not is totally uncertain and unpredictable. As I have
stated before, placebo "effect" is a grab-bag term for statistical
uncertainties about such as things as spontaneous recovery due to the
self-limiting nature of many diseases, psychological components of illness,
inaccuracy and imprecision in diagnosis, observer error, etc. A placebo is
therefore a statistical control for these factors in the form of a sham or fake
treatment such as a sugar pill that looks like the real thing.

Therefore, if the second part of the above question asks why an alternative
ritual cannot be treated as a placebo, then the answer is simple. The physician
who prescribes a placebo to his patient is engaging in deception. He is
intentionally lying to the latter that he is administering a real treatment
with a predictable effect, when he clearly knows that he is not. The ethics of
such deception are questionable outside the confines of a scientific clinical
trial. The latter circumstance is exceptional because a legally and ethically
valid informed consent is obtained from all participants of a study.

In fact, the conclusions of this study raise suspicions about the validity of
acupuncture as a specific mode of treatment. Please see the following quote
from the original paper:

"Conclusions Although acupuncture was found effective for chronic low back
pain, tailoring needling sites to each patient and penetration of the skin
appear to be unimportant in eliciting therapeutic benefits. These findings
raise questions about acupuncture's purported mechanisms of action. It remains
unclear whether acupuncture or our simulated method of acupuncture provide
physiologically important stimulation or represent placebo or nonspecific
effects."

Mahanand confesses killing two more girls
---
The Deputy Superintendent of Police, Mr Serafin Dias
Wednesday informed that Mahanand Naik, the serial killer
from Tarvale, Shiroda, has confessed to killing two more
girls for the greed of gold. With this Mahanand has so far
confessed to killing 12 innocent girls in last 15 years.

Mr Dias said, 'Mahanand Naik, on late Tuesday night
confessed to killing a 30-year-old girl, Bhagi Pandu Satarkar
of Keri, Ponda in 2005 and Deepali Dattaram Jotkar (27) of
Davorlim, Margao in 2007. Both were killed for his avarice
of gold after having sexually assaulting them,' Mr Dias added.

Mahanand killed Bhagi using the same modus operandi which
was used in his earlier cases. He befriended Bhagi and gained
her confidence. He later took her to Borim, near sluice gate,
where he had killed two other girls earlier, and sexually assaulted
her before killing her with her dupatta. He removed her gold
jewellery worth about Rs 75,000 and also her clothes to hide
her identity. He then dumped her in the river waters,' Mr Dias
said quoting Mahanand. The decomposed body of Bhagi was
found in the Ponda police jurisdiction and an unnatural death
case was registered in May 2007.

In the second case, he eloped with Deepali after he befriended
her when he took the construction work of a room of Jotkar
family at Davorlim, Margao in the year 2007, Mr Dias said,
adding that Mahanand confessed that he took her to Cuncolim,
near railway canal and killed her. He robbed her cash and gold
worth Rs 1.5 lakh.

Sources said that Deepali even wrote a note to the parents that
with her own wish she is leaving for Pune and that nobody should
be held responsible for that. The parents, however, did not
complaint to the police about it to hide their family prestige, but
later filed a complaint.

Interestingly, on Wednesday they filed another missing complaint
with the Maina Curtorim police station about their first daughter
Pallavi Jotkar, who went missing some days prior to Deepali's
disappearance. Ms Nirmala Satarkar, sister of Bhagi revealed
that Bhagi had even borrowed her gold to meet the prospective
groom on that fateful day, which turned out to be serial killer
Mahanand.

So far Mahanand has confessed that he killed 12 girls --
Darshana Naik (21) of Tarvale, Shiroda in 1994,
Vasanti Gaude (19) of Marcaim in 1995, Sunita Gaonkar (31)
of Bethora in 2003, Anajani A Gaonkar (28) of Nirankal, Borim
in 2005, Bhagi Pandu Satarkar (30) of Keri, Ponda, in 2005,
Nirmala Gadi (28) of Betki Khandola in 2007, Kesar R Naik
(33) of Panchawadi in 2007, Sushila Fatarpekar (27) of Curca,
Bambolim in 2007, Deepali Jotkar (27) of Davorlim, Margao in
2007, Nayana Goankar (30) of Panchwadi in 2008 and Yogita
Naik (30) of Curti, Ponda -- in last 15 years and interestingly
Goa police had no doubts on him about his serial killings.

[Goanet] Poke away pal!

2009-05-29 Thread Cecil Pinto
Poke away pal
Why do so many people want to be my friends?

By Cecil Pinto

“How many friends does a grown man need,
Before you can call him a man?
Yes and, how many friends can some people collect,
Before they are shown to be sham?
The answer my friend is not on Facebook.
The answer is not on Facebook.”
-with due apologies to Bob Dylan

Some weeks back I lost my cellphone of many years. As anyone who has
been through this experience must surely know, it can be a very
traumatic. I had to start rebuilding two massive databases. One is
obviously my Phone Book, the other is my Word List.

Let me explain. I use the phone’s T9 dictionary a lot to enter text
faster and properly. I am not one of those punks who dnt typ ful wrds
& shld b shot dead!

Of course the T9 dictionary does not have Konkani words like dukra,
pisso, bonkan, cheddi, urrack, caju feni - and absolutely no English
curse words that are so vital for communication. Nor does it have
proper nouns like Panjim, Aldona, Quitula, Goncoi, Campal, Kala,
Divar, Heston, Miguel, Alito, Rahul, Sachin, Digambar, Manohar – names
that often appear in my texting. Fortunately most mobiles allow you to
insert words into the T9 dictionary. Over a period of three years my
lost phone must have had at least 300 such words added into the
dictionary - which all I have now lost.

But I digress.

The point was my phone book contained nearly 500 phone numbers. In the
first month of acquiring a new phone, with the old phone number, I
accumulated maybe 150 odd numbers from people who called up or texted
for some reason or the other. Out of these I would consider about 100
as friends or associates of some sorts and the others as useful
numbers like the plumber, electrician, takeway caterer, cable operator
and the cellphone recharge guy. I can’t for the life of me fathom why
I used to save totally unnecessary numbers on my old phone. Numbers I
don’t use regularly are now relegated to my Digital Diary.

Do I have a hundred friends? Not really. Mostly associates, and sundry
relatives I would not have more than two drinks with. At most I would
say I have maybe 10 close friends, another 50 casual friends and the
rest are all either associates or relatives. My friends circle thus,
is not very wide.

How is it then that there are so many people I know with 500 or more
friends on Facebook? Am I anti-social? Am I a loner? I would like to
believe I am not.

Ok, there are the types who use Facebook as a marketing tool. For them
‘friends’ mean prospective clients. They keep inviting you to parties
and such events without mentioning that they are ticketed events, or
that the booze is sold at incredibly high rates. They are commercially
motivated Facebook abusers and an insult to the word friend. Ignore
these.

The other type, with unbelievably large number of friends, are
basically Facebook sluts. They send and accept Friend Requests from
all and sundry. They have not met, or don’t actually personally know,
most of the people in their Friends database but just want to
perceived as being hugely popular. They will ‘poke’ absolute
strangers, write on multiple ‘walls’, change their ‘status’ frequently
and indulge in numerous absurdly juvenile Facebook activities just to
draw attention, and friend requests, to themselves.

I know a socially inadequate nerd from my neighbourhood who in real
life pretty much keeps to himself as he doesn’t get along with anybody
for long. But on Facebook he’s the life of the party poking away at
people and joining groups and having nearly 1200 friends, 95% of whom
would I am sure would not like him if they met him in real life but
who themselves are also Facebook sluts playing the numbers game.

On the other hand they could just be overly polite people who find it
difficult to refuse Friend requests form strangers.

I have a simple rule for Friend Requests. If I know the person I
accept. Not that I am closed to making friend with strangers but
surely some communication has to occur before I can provide
Friend-ship. Or am I too old for this, and defining ‘friend’ too
narrowly?

Hold on. I see a hand raised? What? You don’t even know what Facebook
is? Why did you read so far? Get a life pal. A virtual life, in
addition to your real one.

Facebook is one of the most popular Social Networking Websites that
basically allow people to interact with others online. You create
profiles and on your page place and share photos-virtual
gifts-quizzes-invitations- polls-movie clips-whathaveyou and comment
on the pages of others who are doing the same. A bizarre online party
that can get quite intriguing. One can spend hours checking out the
profiles of Friends of Friends.

There are other similar networking websites like Orkut (for younger
Indians and Brazilians), MySpace (with highly customizable profile
pages), Classmates (obvious) AdultFriendFinder (to do adult things
with each other), Bebo (to find Goan frogs), Flickr (sharing photos),
Friendster (South Asian friends), Hi5

Thanks George.

A couple of good things happened after being mentioned on that blog. An

[Goanet] Over 30 Goans crack IIT-JEE

2009-05-29 Thread Goanet News Service
Over 30 Goans crack IIT-JEE
28 May 2009, 0455 hrs IST, TNN

PANAJI: Over 30 students from Goa cracked the Indian Institute of Technology's
joint
entrance exam (IIT-JEE) this year, registering a major jump from the 10 who
qualified from the state last year.

Topping the candidates from the state was Anish Tamse, a student of Panaji's
Mushtifund Higher Secondary School, who secured the 998th position nationwide.
While
13 students from Goa got ranks in the main list, 20-25 feature in the extended
IIT-JEE list.

The results were announced on May 25.

Altinho resident Anish, who is proceeding to Mumbai for the counselling
session,
told TOI over the telephone that he has not yet decided which stream of
engineering
to join. "I will decide in consultation with my coaching class tutor Venkatesh
Prabhudesai."

Twelve of the 13 students featuring in the main merit list belong to
Prabhudesai's
Aryan coaching classes. Although the result came as a pleasant surprise to the
tiny
state, students said they were expeting it as they had trained with the aim to
get
into IITs for nearly a year now.

Darshan Varier, who ranked 2025 on the IIT entrance list, said, "I was happy
when I
heard the results to some extent. I had mostly expected to feature in the list.
I
have worked hard for it."

Taleigao resident Darshan says that he began dreaming of joining the IIT "as it
is
the highest level" for those aspiring to pursue engineering.

However, Goans have slipped in the rankings as against last year. The highest
rank
secured by a Goan last year in the IIT merit list was 192. Of the 250 students
who
took the exam in Goa in April 2008, 10 bagged ranks ranging from 192 to 7874.

But this year at 37, it is the highest number of students ever from Goa to have
cracked the exam. The best so far, IITians recall, was 14 some two decades ago.
Darshan is followed by Porvorim resident Bhushan Borkar with a rank of 2535.
Bhushan
had scored the highest marks in GCET of 63 in physics and 71 in mathematics.

Bhushan, who wants to either get into electronics or computer engineering, says
it
was his natural aptitude in mathematics and science since early on which made
him
pursue the dream of joining an IIT.

Apoorva Prabhu Verlekar of Mapusa, who has secured a rank of 6392, said, "I was
happy. I had expected a good rank as I worked for it." He wants to specialise
in
computer science or electonics and telecommunications.

Abhishek Igal, Rohit Giri, Pranav Vaidya, Param Alvenkar, Emrick Braz, Sohail
Habib,
Ishan Joshi, Shaan Akerkar and Aditya Kadur are the others that featured in the
main
list from Goa.

M S S Pranita, Shruti Vaze, Ejaz Veljee and Shubham Pinge are some of the
students
that feature in the extended list.

1) A bhatkar, in Loutolim, stopped his mundkars from planting in morods - land
was lying fallow for years until sold in last decade for residential use.
Fortunately for all concerned, he did not evict the mundkars from their homes
2) Some bhatkars allowed their mundkars to continue planting, with the current
issue that the second/third generation is not bothered about tilling, resulting
in land lying fallow.  Meanwhile, bhatkar pays foro.

If the fact that people were allowed to continue to stay/live off the land for
zilch payment to landlord shows something.

Wonder which part of Goa the bhatkar's are called upon to decide. All my
years in Goa I have never seen this happen. Infact mundkars would keep
the so called bhatkar's at bay.
Accepted that the sarpanch washes his/her hands off the matter... but
not without striking a deal with one of the feuding parties.

Social conscience and bhatkars ? Can someone enlighten me on the
bhatkars social contribution after liberation ?

- If true, don't understand as to how one can go to such an extent
single handedly and that too undetected or unnoticed.
- It also shows how effectively Goa police handled missing persons cases
- It is also obvious that the cases with less or no weightage (I mean those
cases from economically weaker section of the society) has
no or less importance in the eyes of Goa Police
- All bodies found, some of which were beyond recongnition,
police registered them all as 'unnatural deaths' thus closing the
file once for all.
It seems our police are too busy in..
. in making extra money
. Attending cases of Ministers, higher-ups and the one who can
pays/bribes to investigate.
