Re: [Goanet] How is that indian origin kids perform exceptionally at US National Spelling Bee. Good luck

2009-06-01 Thread Mario Goveia

From: Naguesh Bhatcar

It is not by chance that kids of Indians, do well at these US Spelling Bee or
Geographic Bee. They take great pains to push their kids to do it.
Parents of Indian kids are known to put a lot of pressure on their kids to
stand out. It is even said that they live their lives through the achievements
of their kids!!

Mario adds:

Naguesh is generally correct in his observation. Indian American parents push
their kids to do well across the board which is why the Indian community
dominates the academic scene in the US in just one generation. However, it has
to be more than parents pushing the kids. At this level, the kids, too, must
participate and enjoy the competition.

Many other Americans push their kids as well, except that they focus on other
activities like sports or music or dance or acting, which is why they excel in
those areas.

Spelling is not a high priority for most other Americans, especially in this
day and age of the Internet where spell check can do your spelling for you, and
the growing popularity of texting and tweeting where abbreviations are popular.

Most Indian American kids are unable to compete in the physical activities
mentioned above that other Americans excel in, so spelling and academics is
where they find it possible to distinguish themselves.

Re: [Goanet] death of Boyer and Nolasco da Gama

2009-06-01 Thread Eugene Correia

Francis is right in saying that the young girl was beautiful. I don't remember
how old she was and, I think, her name was Laura.
The grenade landed between her legs and the young girl's flesh had stuck to the
walls. During the military investigation, it was learnt that the grenade had
not gone off fully because the pin was not fully detached. As the jawans were
going around the house, the ruffling noise woke up the mother. I think she
switched on the light. As the jawans scurred away, they threw the grenade.
Unfortunately, the girl perished but the rest of the family was saved.
One of the jawans' shoe was found at the site and that led to their arrests.
The jawans were court-marshalled and punished.
After a long fight for justice, compensation was paid. The case went to Nehru,
helped by my uncle (dad's cousin) and noted freedom fighter
Konknni/English/Portuguese journalist Felix Valois Rodrigues who worked for The
Indian Express in New Delhi. I do not know how much money was given to the
family but, as expected, it wasn't much.
This first incident caused lot of heartburning among Goans, particularly those
who were pro-Portuguese. It gave them a chance to say that is a pointer to what
Goa will be under Indian rule.
The reason for this incident was over a pack of cigarettes. The jawans demanded
foreign cigarettes from the grocery owner. He said he does not have any and it
started an argument that led to a threat. Some say that Manuel Santana did not
want to sell to the jawans as he was against the Indians taking over Goa. He
was known to be an adamant and short-tempered person. He paid a heavy price.
I am not sure but I seem to have a feeling that the incident is briefly
mentioned in Lino Leitao's book, The Gift of the Holy Cross. I do not have the
copy but those who have can check it. Maybe, the incident is also mentioned in
some of the books dealing with Goa's liberation. Since I read many books on the
liberaion many years ago, I cannot remember if it is mentioned.

This by far is the most negative article about the Nano. I have read that the
Nano
has been generally well received across the country. Granted that more cars on
the road will create more pollution, but the current sales of scooters and
motorcyles
with 2 stroke engines will pollute the atmosphere, more than the Nano. All this
is
the price that the country pays for progress and economic development.

I hope the author of this article also goes after all the Industrialists like
Ambanis,
Birlas and the rest. The author has to come to Goa and do an investigative
reporting on the effects of mining.

I would be curious to know as to which company has stuck to the rules and has
not been controversial in its dealings. I never understood as to what Mamta

achieved by her agitation, other than giving away thousands of jobs to Gujarat.
Now

[Goanet] Dr. Ahamed Ajmeer, an Ayurvedic Doctor receives death threats from multi nationals

2009-06-01 Thread J. Colaco < jc>
Santosh Helekar asked: This is hilarious. It would be interesting to
know how many Goanetters believe the following news item, and how many
journalists on Goanet would publish such a claim in their newspaper in
the manner that it has been published.

==

response:

I don't know the true answer to the above question from Santoshbab.

I would however like to say the following:

[1] If this Ayurvedic doctor, Dr. Ahamed Ajmeer, has received 'regular
threats' from MNCs, he has obviously reported these threats and the
MNCs to the relevant authorities.

[2] I want to believe him, and I do believe him when he says that he
has 'never used modern anesthesia and muscle relaxants' (in his
practice. He would after all NOT have been trained, generally or
specifically, to use them.

[3] Mr.Feni-andes (the vhodlo dotor from Velim) must be quite
displeased that this doctor does not use medicine containing alcohol.

[4] I am however, quite impressed by the following case: " a lady who
met with an accident crushing the Right cerebral hemisphere, in a
complete vegetable state where the doctors had ordered removal of left
eye was treated by Dr and now after 8 months of treatment is back on
her foot caring for her three children."

I will not try to figure out WHY the right eye would be removed in a
person with a crush injury of the Right cerebral hemisphere - but this
doctor appears to claim that he has reversed a Persistent Vegetative
State (PVS) in this woman. This is a Nobel Prize winning discovery (or
perhaps, a No-Bell Prize winning one).

Now - all this doctor needs to do is to provide documentation from a
recognised hospital where PVS was diagnosed, and present this patient
for the public to see for themselves.

The rest is just high power stuff aka garbage so I will side-step
it for now.

[Goanet] Actor Kiran Kumar to leave an impact in T-Bush film

2009-06-01 Thread gaspersWorld
By Gasper Crasto

Kuwait: Actor Kiran Kumar will certainly leave an impact on the Kuwait
audience with his portrayal of an expatriate Indian in the movie Kahin Na
Kahin Milenge set for release in Kuwait on 12th June at Cinema Laila Tower,
Salmiya at 6.30pm.

The film produced by T-Bush, co-produced by Wency John Ferrao, and directed
by T-Bush and Arif Kazi is the first Hindi Bollywood Film to be made in
Kuwait.

Mr. Ajai Malhotra, Indian ambassador to Kuwait will be the chief guest at
the premiere. The star cast of the film Kiran Kumar, Shakti Kapoor, Kishore
Bhanushali, Manisha Ram Kelkar, Amit Bhanushali, etc, are expected to attend

Kiran Kumar features in one of the key roles of the film. While speaking
about his experiences on shooting in Kuwait he said, "I enjoyed shooting in
Kuwait for ‘Kahin Na Kahin Milenge'. I was impressed when I was told about
the script and the role of Rajveer Malhotra which I have portrayed. It's a
story about a person who is settled here in Kuwait, his social achievements
and the story revolves around the relationship between the father and the
daughter."

Kiran further added, "I was here in Kuwait for 15 days and I was very much
impressed with the people here and the entire unit of the film for their
cooperation. During my stay I thoroughly enjoyed working with T-Bush
International Films." Kiran expressing his confidence over the success of
this movie saying, "Working with T-Bush was a good experience and I foresee
a bright future for him. This is a very first Hindi feature film made in
Kuwait and no doubt till now it has been handled brilliantly and I hope this
movie will be successful at the Box Office too."

Kiran Kumar has performed in more than 450 Hindi films and a total of 5500
episodes on television. Reminiscing his journey from an actor followed by
Director turned Producer, he says "I thoroughly enjoyed being an actor and I
still love to be an actor though I am not a full fledged director yet. I
will continue to act until my roles are successful before deciding to take
up direction."

Kiran Kumar entered the movie scene with his debut movie, "Do Boond Pani". A
string of movies followed after this, but did not prove to be much
successful. Kiran took a break from movies and concentrated on Gujurati
plays. "But once you have a taste of the movies, no other medium of acting
appeals to you more," says the veteran actor reminiscing his career.

Son of veteran character actor Jeevan, Kiran Kumar is a Kashmiri by birth
and claims his lineage to the Kashmiri royal family. He began his career as
the hero in ‘Do Boond Pani’ in 1971, and went on to play villain in several
films. His role of the loathsome Lothia Pathan in the Anil Kumar starrer hit
film ‘Tezaab’ made people sit up and take notice.

Kiran Kumar is one of the highest paid actors on television. His foray into
the small screen was with a Cinevista production. "In Cinevista's ‘Zindagi’
I played Benjamin Gilani's father. When Cinevista approached me again ten
years later, for Ghutan, I took it on as I wanted to get back to television.

Sunil Mehta's 'Prem Kishan' was his first serial. Then came Zindagi, Ghutan,
Sahil, Manzil, and Katha Sagar. Aur Phir ek Din and Papa for B4U have been
the latest. Kiran was awarded the Mayor's Award for Ghutan and for Aur Phir
ek Din.

Talking about his roles in movies, Kiran has always fancied playing ‘shades
of humanity and not larger than life characters."
Apart from Kahin Na Kahin Milenge, Kiran’s forthcoming films in 2009 are
Pratigya, Do Chehre, Modh, Nidar - The Fearless, Hi Mummy Hi Daddy, Gahraee,
Aisi Deewangi, Pyaar Ke Rang Hazaar, etc.

With over 30 years in the industry behind him, he is one of those rare types
who are content with what he has and is still getting from the entertainment
world and life in general. With two teenaged children and a doting wife who
has stood by him through thick and thin, Kiran is the ultimate family man.

"The audience got to watch me in Kahin Na Kahin Milenge," concludes the
dynamic actor.

[Goanet] The Accidental Activist - Migrant Musings

2009-06-01 Thread Venita Coelho
The Accidental Activist - Migrant Musings

By Venita Coelho

My inbox has been full of mails with titles like 'The Migrant Problem'
'Safeguarding
the Goan Identity' 'Controls on Migration'. The controversy over migrants in
Goa is
raging hard on the internet with mails shooting back and forth from places as
far
away as Dubai and Canada. I found myself inadvertently involved, when someone
wrote
in to congratulate me on the 'Protest by Picnic' idea. He copied the mail to
his
mailing list and I promptly got an irate mail from some person called Rajan
Parrikar
claiming that the 'problem' with people like me was that we organised picnics
but
took no stand on the migrant issue. He then went on to call me a 'moron' and a
'twit'
for not banging my chest and demanding that all migrants be sent home in chains
immediately. Phew!

All the heat and the name calling only underscores just how strongly Goans feel
about the migrant question. And as the arguments get louder and louder, it also
becomes obvious that Goans are feeling very threatened. We have reason to. Over
forty per cent of the current population of Goa is estimated to be non- goan.
Factor
in the tiny size of our state. It makes up exactly .01 percent of the land mass
of
India. More people travel daily by locals in Mumbai than live in Goa. At that
small
scale, a further influx of migrants can easily tip the scales and throw into
chaos a
way of living and a unique culture that is already under siege.

Who has opened the floodgates to migrants? The first culprits are politicians.
Migrants have actually been trucked in to form votebanks for politicians. Mr.
Digambar Kamat doesn't depend on your vote or mine. He has his own captive
votebank
consisting of migrants who know very well what vote they have to cast if they
want a
tin roof over their heads.

The second culprit is the government with its misguided policies. These
policies
seek to create a certain kind of so-called 'development' for Goa. They fuel the
building boom by creating 'second holiday homes' for people from other states.
And
of course to build these holiday homes, it takes labour from other states as
well.
It is the same government that seeks to create 'opportunities' by 'developing
industries'. But these industries will be owned by non goans and operated by
non
goans because there are no matching policies to create a skilled labour force
from
among the locals who can take advantage of the jobs created in this manner.

'Development' is a word that one must look at closely and with suspicion. Any
development that sidelines the people it is supposed to help should be spurned.
When
activists stand up to protest projects they are not saying no to development.
They
are questioning the very nature of development that is being thrust upon this
state.
Why should we have industrial zones that spew pollution into the air and water
and
which create more jobs for outsiders than locals? Why should we sell the
natural
beauty of our land in such a manner that the beauty itself ends up devastated
by
ugly projects that destroy ecologically sensitive areas? How can you use the
word
'development' for policies that benefit only a few and snatch from the majority
their right to a life that includes simple things like clean air and water?

What politicians and policies have done is put the common Goan under siege. It
is
identity that has become the sensitive issue that underlies all the sound and
fury
over migrants.

Just down the road from my house is an old abandoned house. Last monsoon the
roof
caved in. I was surprised to learn that it is the house of Jack Sequiera - the
man
who first gave Goans an identity by creating the poll that allowed them to vote
to
be a separate state. A tiny new state with an identity that bravely held its
own
shape despite being merged into the larger mass of India. But as the migrants
pour
in, the Goan is feeling overwhelmed. He is afraid that he will end up an
outsider in
his own land. That fear is not unfounded. It comes home in simple ways. In some
villages in the South, blocks of flats have come up that will house over eight
hundred families. That one development will outnumber the population of the
entire
village. In our own village the government acquired land to build houses under
the
poverty alleviation scheme. This area is known irreverently as 'phukat vado'.
Migrants have moved in and rented, built and sub let, until, as we discovered
in our
Regional Plan survey, one third of the population of Moira is jammed into that
one
development. All of them have ration and voting cards.

The opinion poll was a creative and apt solution for it's time. A new solution
needs
to be found for the troubling times that are facing us. Perhaps special status
is
the answer. Equally, special policies are required as well. Policies that
recognize
the uniqueness of Goa. Of her land and people. That do not c

Hi there,

Was in Barbados for the final MBBS exams. This year's students (from
my vantage point) appeared to be very well prepared. It was a real
pleasure for me to be part of this exam. I am absolutely certain that
these young graduates will proceed to become excellent future doctors.

Short but nice stay in Barbados - on the beach. Interesting to see how
this little country is fostering tourism development in tandem with
(a) protection of the environment and (b) fruitful employment for the
sons and daughters of the soil - while still allowing (c) the
investors to make the desired returns for their money.

There are some very nice (and clean) beach side 'shacks' which are
tastefully constructed and, the food tastefully presented.

There is much for Goa to learn from other places. May be, somebody in
the Goa cabinet will read this and set out for a month long 'fact
finding all expenses paid visit' to this little island.

>From past experience, I understand that sitting a CM is unlikely to go
on an overseas trip - just in case, the usual suspects decide to fill
the vacuum with their customary ghuspott.

Hence, it might be best that the whole Vidhan Sabha makes that fact
finding trip along with 'phamily and phrends'.

Goa may actually do better in their month (or year long)absence (;-)

World Environment Day Program at Margao on 5th June
--
The Goa Civic and Consumer Action Network (GOACAN)
together with the Benaulim Environment Trust (BET) will
observe World Environment Day 5th June with the theme
“Protect Water – Protect Life” at the Kharebandh Bridge
in Margao.

The public gathering which will start at 8.30am and end at
10.30am will focus on the protection and restoration of all
polluted water bodies with a special focus on River Sal.
Another significant focus of the day will be the need for
Total Sanitation and Toilet Access for all consumers in
Goa as it is the prime cause of water contamination.

It may be noted that the Benaulim Environment Trust has
undertaken significant studies on the pollution levels of the
River Sal, the causes and possible solutions for the restoration
of the river.

It may also be noted that the Consumer Forums have been
consistently campaigning to protect water with the observation
of the World Water Day 22nd March at Pateapur, Nuvem
followed by the observation of Earth Day on 22nd April near
Saipem Lake, Navelim.

It may be recalled that the Goa State Pollution Control Board
conducted site visits and took water samples from the River Sal
and the Saipem Lake after persistant demands by the Navelim
Civic and Consumer Forum.

Recently, the South Goa District Disaster Management Committee
under the Chairmanship of the South Goa Collector has constituted
a Sub-Committee consisting of the Margao Municipal Council,
PWD Sewerage and the Goa State Pollution Control Board to
examine the causes of pollution of the River Sal and the Saipem
Lake at Navelim.

GOACAN calls upon environmentally conscious citizens to join
the gathering on World Environment Day 5th June and extend
solidarity to the “Protect Water – Protect Life” Campaign.

[Goanet] Animal lovers?

2009-06-01 Thread Dr . Ferdinando dos Reis Falcão

The article titled “Croaking for life…” on Herald, Sunday the 31st May, made
interesting reading. Interesting because it was liken to a speech by
politicians, wherein the writer has conveniently blamed the poaching by humans
as the cause of the decrease in the number of frogs and downplayed the prime
factor conveniently. May I ask the writer if there are no more green fields, no
ponds no water tanks remaining, all land filled for builders lobby; forests
depleted and land made barren; where are the frogs going to breed? In the
stagnant gutters or the potholes on tarmac? And where does he expect them to
live, in the ‘mega-projects’? There is more breeding ground for mosquitoes than
for the frog in Goa. And to state that mosquitoes have increase because of
diminished frog population is insane, as no frog is going to travel from its
greenfield surroundings to your concrete jungle to lap your mosquitoes. Such
biased writing amounts to irresponsibility and ignorance of frog habitat and
breeding.

Human beings are born with instinct to love and protect one another, and love
for animals is secondary. Watch children grow or see the tiny tots in school.
When human grow into adults and their ‘superego’ takes over, and when they have
hostile past experiences and start hating other humans or vice-versa; it is
then that they turn to be animal lovers by default. They can even take their
pretentious animal love to the extent of grooming their children to hate
humans. A typical example is the notorious “hate speech” of last elections.
Look at the Human rights and Civil liberties violation taking place on youth at
Satari just for the sake of a tiger presumably killed at Keri which was
definitely not executed by a youth. Whereas humans killed and thrown by the
wayside, or in the water, like in Mahanand’s victims cases; they were
unceremoniously closed as ‘unnatural death’. Let me give a piece of advice to
all these animal lovers; if you are in dire straits tomorrow it is the humans
who’ll reach out to help you and not your animals.

Dr. Ferdinando dos Reis Falcão.

[Goanet] M. Boyer .... the legend lives on

2009-06-01 Thread Tomazinho
M. Boyer...the legend lives on

   ?Tomazinho Cardozo

If there was one dramatist who dared to experiment with innovations on the
Konkani stage besides delivering stellar performances in innumerable tiatrs and
lending his distinct voice to thousands of timeless songs (kantaram), it was M
Boyer.

Considered to be a living legend of the tiatr movement, the 78 year old M
Boyer, born on October 11, 1930 and christened Manuel Aguiar, took an avid
interest in acting and singing right from his childhood. However, his parents,
not too keen on seeing their son grow up to be a performer, tried to discourage
him from pursuing his passion.

But, despite all their attempts, Aguiar never gave up his love for the stage.
He was a determined young man and continued to pursue his dream under the
pseudonym, M. Boyer.

Although he didn't possess a very melodious voice, it was M Boyer's lyrics and
signature style of singing that left several audiences spellbound and placed
him among the most sought after singers of Konkani stage. In fact, it was very
rare for him to leave the stage sans a thundering applause from his audiences
and pleas for an encore performance.

That M Boyer was a gifted performer was manifested by his ability to mesmerize
audiences through his extempore composition of lyrics on stage, laced with wit
and sarcasm. While his songs mostly addressed issues related to the decline of
good values in society, they also criticized the misdeeds of tainted
politicians and leaders.

This multi-faceted personality will also be remembered as one of the finest
script writers of the Konkani stage. He penned many tiatrs, some of which are
timeless. Dramas such as "Bhurgim ani Bhangar", "Adim tem Atam Hem", "Kazari
Put Xezari", "Sonvsar Sudorlo", "Ghor Dukhi Ganv Suki" and "Chintnam Zalim
Sopnam" find a place among his most memorable works.

But, the one tiatr which created history was "Ekuch Rosto". It was penned by M
Boyer and was based on communal harmony shared between the two major
communities of Goa.

M Boyer's contribution to tiatrs and kantaram is invaluable. Because of his
huge role in enriching and preserving Goan culture and traditions, the Sangeet
Natak Academy in New Delhi - the highest cultural institution of India -
honoured him with the Sangeet Natak Academy Award. Incidentally, M Boyer is the
only Goan artiste to receive this prestigious award.

The government of India also took note of his great contribution to Goan
culture and bestowed him with the prestigious Padmashri. M Boyer will,
therefore, go down in history as the only cultural artist from Goa to have
received both, the Sangeet Natak Academy Award and the Padmashri.

Apart from his unforgettable contributions to tiatrs, M Boyer lobbied for the
preservation fo Goan identity. He believed that the Konkani language alone
could strengthen the foundations of Goan identity. To support his cause, he
participated in all movements and agitations which were organized to preserve
the state and its identity. He used the Konkani stage and his songs to arouse
feelings of solidarity in the Goan people. He also succeeded to a great extent
in his attempt to convince the people of the importance of Konkani to the Goan
identity.

M Boyer was an institution by himself. His unwavering dedication to the Konkani
stage was exemplary and led to him securing the highest position in the tiatr
fraternity.

The  “Pai Tiatrist” – Joao Agostinho Fernades (JAF)indoor auditorium,  Margao,
which was packed to capacity reverberated at exactly  7.30 to the echoes  of
the tiatr  “Gouyo Put” .   The  tiatr staged 57 years ago,  bringing back
nostalgic memories of that famous Konkani playwright, a musician, singer,
composer , director, the hat donned , well attired bespectacled gentleman, late
Augusto Remedios Souza Ferrao (b: 1.6.1909 d: 6.3.1978)  a native of Ambora
Raia, whose inaugural “Souza Ferrao Birth Centenary Celebrations “  under the

Anilkumar and others viz; Fatima, Jessie, Angela, C D Silva, Ben Evangelist,

Ciriaco Dias a Konkani playwright since 1942 minced no words to express his
disenchantment towards the tiatrist from Mumbai who were not bestowed any State
awards till date.  Some of them are dead and others will soon follow suit he
said.  He reminded the Government that it is the tiatrists of yesteryears who
sacrificed every thing for the benefit of the society with no monetary
returns.  He chided the Government for merely appointing committees and
launched his tirade against those that constituted such committees who
displayed a lackadaisical attitude towards the sentiments of the tiatrist. he
however said that CM Digamber Kamat had stood by his promises and would surely
rectify such obstacles.

Chief Minister,  Shri. Digambar Kamat  the Chief Guest speaking at the
inaugural function assured the Tiatrist of all support to their cause.  His
Government has released grants for the Academy to have their own premises a
promise he made at the inauguration of the Tiatr Academy on 16th February, 2009.

Later he released a book on A R Souza Ferrao which gives incite in to the life
and times of A R Souza Ferrao and several pictures.

CM also inaugurated a  website on A R Souza Ferrao on the ocassion

Deputy Speaker of the Goa Legislative Assembly, Mr. Mauvin Godinho,  Guest of
Honour , speaking on the ocassion said that unless the audience extends support
to the tiatros this aspect of Goan culture will not flourish.

Mr. Rico Rod  ( Ricardo Vincent Rodrigues ) the inimitable comic faced,
comedian a native of Sirlim supported the views of Cyriaco and paid a tribute
in memory of late M Boyer (who they fondly called Manu) with a song
unaccompanied by music.

Mr Tomazinho Cardozo President of the Tiatr Academy tried to convince the
audience on the technicalites that prevented the Goa Government from awarding
the Bombay based tiatrists.  But this did not find favour with the audience.

President of the A R Souza Ferrao Cultural and Charitable Trust thanked the
audience.

Special momentos were given to the CM, Dy Speaker, President of the Tiatr
Academy and Rico Rod.  A special momento was also given to Anil Kumar who had
willingly agreed to re-act the play on today's ocassion.

A maid Lourencin  of Mr A R Souza Ferrao who used to look after their house in
Fatorda and was always available at the beck and call of A R Souza Ferrao and
other tiatrist who practiced there was given a cash award on the ocassion.

Mr Domnic De Souza compered the programme. The family of Pai Tiatrist were
special invitees on the ocassion.

Flora Wilma Souza Ferrao the daughter of Mr. A R Souza Ferrao who otherwise
lives in Arossim speaking to this writer   at her Maddel Grande , Margao
residence, candidly admitted   that  “ while the tiatr audience remembers him
for  his  stage performances , her father indeed was an excellent  musician .
Yes -  Music - was his forte he loved to participate in  Goan folk songs and
dances “   . Indeed in a befitting tribute to his musical prowess the second

New
York City Journal

A Weekend in Manhattan

After a long and difficult flight from Delhi, my weariness melted away as I
walked out of the immigration and customs clearance area at JFK. She was
standing there, all of 24, a Lower East Side sophisticate and simply
gor-geous. She rushed out from under the barrier and hugged me. "Hi Daddy,"
she said. Then she took charge. Taxis, hotel check-in, local cell phone and
what have you. I'm a very lucky father because both my daughters look after
me with the same persnickety concern that I had when I took care of them.

The older one booked my passage to New York, worrying about my aisle seat
and my meal preference, which for some reason has been put down in every
airline as a "Hindu" special. I had to convince the stewardess that I'd
prefer steak and a glass of Merlot. Believe me: the food was really good
though the seats were not very comfortable.

The younger daughter took over after I reached JFK. As she shepherded me
through the airport, I could see she had changed in the year since I had
been with her in New York. Sure, she had been in India in the interim; they
al-ways say it is better to see lions in their own habitat. And in her
precinct that is the aspirational model for every cool person in the world,
she shines and is carelessly sophisticated.

When I was much younger and first came to New York in the company of my
friend David Swanson, a native, the city was a dream. He lived in the
Village and effortlessly took me to the best, off-the-beaten track
restaurants. I loved every minute of the experience in the 1970s. Three
decades later, I'm cruising the "hoods" in the Lower East Side with my
younger daughter and discovering even cooler places. All fathers should be
so lucky.

All these years, I've looked after every need of my daughters. Today I count
myself fortunate that they take care of me. I can manage on my own of course
but there's a special joy in having competent and caring daughters look
after you. I've always believed that sophistication came very easily to me.
But at brunch last Sunday at a trendy little bistro on the Lower East Side,
I ordered a draught beer with my Eggs Benedict where my younger one ordered
a Mimosa, champagne and orange juice, with her apple pan-cake.

The afternoon I arrived, when she broke through the barrier and hugged me,
we drove to my hotel. The room was not ready and I was jet-lagged.
"Fa-ther," she says to me, "I've got the perfect cure." We checked my bag
with the concierge and rode a cab to "The Frying Pan," a beer and burger
place on a barge on the Hudson River on the West Side. There we indulged a
cou-ple of beers and what to me was one of the better burgers I've had,
period.

Later that evening, we checked out the cafes and bars near Union Square,
close to where she lived when she enrolled at NYU six years ago. She had
made a reservation at a 19th street restaurant called "crafts" but we still
had to wait until a table became available. So much for the recession! The
res-taurant was abuzz; Manhattan at its weekend best. The ambience was great
and food to match.

More important, it was a glimpse into my daughter's world. At age 24, she
lives in the trendy Lower East Side and works in edgy SoHo. Her job is also
a very 21st century enterprise having to do with the production of
interactive multimedia content. The very fact that she landed a satisfying
job in the midst of a raging recession seems to have buoyed her confidence.
Where half a million people lose their jobs each month, she switched jobs.
Deserv-edly, she is very proud of her new position and excitedly displays
her fancy new business card.

As always, the visit proved too short. We spent virtually every minute of my
stay together. As I got in the cab to head for the airport, I looked back at
her receding figure, waving at me. I heard a song go out of my heart.
Amaz-ingly, it wasn't Ellington or Billie Holiday or Louis Armstrong. The
lines that reverberated in my head were from a song in the film, The Sound
of Music:

Somewhere in my youth or childhood,
I must have done something good...

Daughters are a blessing to begin with but to love them and have them love
you back is a fulfillment of the highest order.

A Respectful Tribute to M. Boyer

Goans from all walks of live and across all spans of age,
were acquainted with the name of M. Boyer. His forays on the stage, with his
characteristic gestures would stir the audience to giggle and wriggle, while
his lyrics would entertain, nay invite one to introspect deep into one?s
conscience.

He was conscious of the fact that ?Sounsar Sudhorlo? does
beg the ?Ponn? (but/yet) of customs, habits and un-reflected superstitions.
It
was the ?Ponn? that cast shadow upon and veiled the progress. He
conscientised
his audience that progress should impact all facets of life and existence.
The

world mourns a ?tiatrist? and a singer, in the passing away of M. Boyer.

But, every genuine Goan mourns a genuine son of the land,
whose concern was ?Aplo Ganv [Goa]? and ?Apli
Bhas [Konkani],? as revealed to us in his first cassette, ?Golden Goa.? His
concern for his land (Aplo Ganv) was profound and deep-seated, as he sings,
?Goa xhar amchem, uzvaddachem mannik tem,

teachem sudharop kel?lem tor odik porzollit zatem. Ponn Goa xhar pokrun
bhitorleam kelam ritem.. Magir Goykara fuddar amcho kitem?? He lamented
that ?Ami goykar fokot sirvisoch korunk
urle, amcheam xikloleam bhurgeank bhailea ganvanim dhaddle. Goyam, bhailo
lok
ieun karkannem bhandlet vhoddle. Atam goykaramnim tanche nokor zaumche
poddle.?

Decades ago, he cautioned us, ?Goa mannik
dovlotichem? ponn konn nokllo kitem zait Goa
xharachem.? He provoked us to realize that ?Goa bhitorlean pokorlam, fokot
suropaien urlam. Atam goykaramnim urlolem
samballpachem.? Therefore he suggested a dual approach, ?Ami goykar ekvott
ghoddun, soglle goyche

dongor foddun, chinttat re min tem goyant koddoupachem,? and ?Goyam kakhanne
bandhat re, sirviso goykarank diat re, ani goyant dovrat bhangar
goykaranchem.?
In view of this, he boldly exhorted the young minds, ?dekhun engineer zaiat
re, Goyam karkhanne bandhat re, nam tor lok

bandhun goychi girestkai vhortole.?

His Goanness made him appeal to Goans to cherish their
mother-tongue Konkani and to spare no pains to promote it. His concern was
to

make Konkani the binding force of Goans, irrespective of religion, caste or
whatever. It was seen by him as the true and visible sign of our Goanness.
The

neglect of Konkani he prophesied could lead to the doom of the land and its
entity, when he sang ?Ami khoinche te
sangonk ghuspotole ami, Goykar sanddtole zorui sandot tor Konkani.? He
reflected that the consequences of not giving Konkani its due importance
would

be catastrophic by stating that ?ami
sanddtole sandlli zalear amchi bhas Konkani.?

He was firmly convinced that the Goan identity was deeply
ingrained in our language and vice-versa. That is why he exhorted ?amchem
goykarponn rakhonk samballat Konkani.?

It is worthy to note that Goans, irrespective of political
party affiliations, creed or other differences are mourning the loss of the
great man, M. Boyer.

Lest we carve a niche for him just in the portals of
artistes, I would suggest that we look at his contribution, not only as a
performer/actor and singer, but moreover, as a social activist and reformer
and

give him due recognition.

Re: [Goanet] death of Boyer and Nolasco da Gama

2009-06-01 Thread Francis Rodrigues

Beautifully couched Eugene, brought back many memories.

Before my time, but the exquisitely beautiful little girl blown
up by jawans in that tragic incident in Bogmalo was from the House
of Rodrigues. In later years we returned briefly to Goa and bought
a lovely dwelling some minutes away from the beach and were immersed
in the lore. I do know compensation was sought all the way to Nehru
in Delhi, but never learnt the outcome. Perhaps Eugene will fill us in.

I had the good fortune of meeting the gifted M. Boyer just a couple
of times in his heyday, once on a flight from Mumbai to Goa. He came
across as a quietly effervescent thespian of many talents.

His teatrs were an absolute delight. Like his famed predecessors, the
late great Anthony Mendes, Jacinto Vaz and A.R. Souza Ferrao, Boyer
possessed the supreme gift of comedic timing - in humour, a surpassing
quality. His entrances were legend, the waltzing figure-of-eights
("attko"), biplane-style, drove audiences into a roaring frenzy.

His exits were no less spectacular, and I have rarely witnessed so
many encores, each more spectacular than the last. But greater than
Jacinto Vaz and Rosario Rodrigues after him, who sometimes lost
control and broke out in stifled giggles, Boyer could deadpan through
the most hysterical laugh riots, better than the great "Stone-face",
Buster Keaton himself. If you've ever watched "Keystone Kops".

More than anything else, without being overly hyperbolic, Boyer was
king of the comedy song - witness his "Adim ani Atam". As Eugene has
remarked, he excelled too in duets and when extrapolated to his forte,
comedy, the results were an absolute riot. Anyone who's listened to his
brilliant English-Konkani song duel with Alfred Rose, cannot fail to
collapse in irrepressible mirth. Challenged by Rose to upstage Brit
hits like "Stop The World And Let Me Off", etc., when Alfred throws
Afric Simone's "Ramaya" at him, in a flash Boyer retorts with killer
shots like, "Ramaya??? Ho, ho, hoghara iea!". Absolutely priceless.

One could go on and on, but I've saved more cherished memories for the
section on Boyer in my upcoming (August), "Greatest Konkani Song Hits",
which includes Boyer musical gems like his blockbuster "Ixttaghott".
Thank you Manuel Santana Aguiar for the twin gifts of laughter and music.

Francis.
