When I was in primary school, I had a routine. Every day, after my
school ended at 3.30pm (Manovikas), I was taken for a short walk from
the school premises behind the Police Station to my fathers shop
opposite Lohia Maidan. On the way I always demanded that we stop by
Marliz to get myself a chocolate cupcake. I usually ran back to my
fathers shop, a few shops ahead, while my mother stopped by at the shop
to talk to friends that were also shopping for bread, or cakes. Old Mr.
Marliz frightened my little brother with his loud voice, but always sent
us free patties during the Grace Church Feast.

Today, Marliz is quite dilapdated. His son from Raia still owns the
place, but i've hardly seen him around. The storekeepers deputed there
all seem drunk, and have been very poor with service. On one occasion he
preferred to talk to another store attendant rather than attend to me, a
customer. He didn't mind that I walked out of the store after 5 minutes
of being ignored despite reminders to him that I wanted some bread.
Though their bread still tastes good, it's packed in 20micron carry
bags... a really shabby way of packaging a product of marliz.

Sadly, I don't shop there anymore.

I have always found those terms very interesting: toh bhair podlo and toh
piddear zalo. On esggesting that he is no longer with us as in
now inhabiting another space or plane, and the other suggesting corruption
of the mortal body.
Also, those days I think are quite gone where women would lament and be in
need of aliment (beverages) to replensh themselves. Doubt whether anyone
below 55 bawl as much these days. But this too has to do with levels of
sophistication, simplicity and fears of any given family.

On another note, my Dad always took something that was the favorite (often
an addiction) of the person who has passed away and kept it a little ahead
of the path to the grave. For his sister, my aunt Cecilia it was two packets
of Charminar, since she was a two pack a day Charminar girl. Cecilia
(Cissy) was one ballsy gal who never got married, since her Dad found the
guy she fell in love with too hip or something. In fact they both did not
get married. For others it was a bottle of liquor or something else. I think
for his little niece it was biscuits or something. He did these things in
his own quite way. The same for Hindus, and others but these woudl be given
away usually to beggars, and others.
Here is a book I did on my Dad's funeral. Its called, Ode to a Fragment of
Silence. It reads from right to left. I could not attend the funeral whcih
was ten years ago. Click on All Sizes and then Original.

The follow response by Cedric Prakask SJ in an 2004 interview, may be
helpful, considering that salvation (or rather its denial) often appears
to be such a huge issue. It also shows that in many ways the church is in a
sense an adolescent, grow.ing slowly but one could also see it as some
willingness to grow. In fact a priest mentioned this to me about three
decades ago. Lets hope that process stays on track.

The link to the whole interview from the India Committee of the
Netherlands/ Landelijke
India Werkgroep site, which I presume
has been read by many on Goanet is below. Btw, India should also consider
having XYZCountry Committee of India for various countries. Perhaps a way of
getting into the games, since I often hear it referred as such -- a game
(Baba, toh soglo khell). Everything is a game!

from: http://www.indianet.nl/iv040629.html
*Q: But what about the exclusive truth claims of different religions? Some
of them imagine salvation or heaven to be the sole preserve of their
adherents. How do you think this issue can be addressed in the course of
dialoguing between adherents of different religions?*

A: In the Catholic case, prior to the Second Vatican Council, the position
was the there is no salvation outside the boundaries of the Catholic Church.
But now our official position has undergone a major change. Salvation, we
now believe, is indeed possible outside the Church. You don’t have to be a
Christian in order to be saved. A good Muslim or a good Buddhist or a good
Hindu can also be saved. On the other hand, many right-wing evangelical and
fundamentalist Protestant churches believe that non-Christians, no matter
how pious or good, will be doomed to hell. Naturally, this constitutes a
major barrier in any inter-faith dialogue venture.

Another feather in the cap of Goa Su-Raj Party.

The Party, in its 'ROAD MAP FOR GOA' which is actually the Party's raison d'
etre with the Road Map ( released on August 20, 2005) being the Party's
permanent MANIFESTO has mentioned [ Chapter III - General Administration at
(6) (e) Bridges & Fly-Overs- Page 32]

Quote
Possibly a suspension bridge to connect Dona Paula Plateau to Dabolim/Vasco.
Unquote

It also mentions
Quote
A bridge to connect North Goa riverine belt to the capital city possibly
connecting Nerul/Verem to Campal/Miramar or Dona Paula plateau in Panjim
shall be considered.

Unquote

The front page headline caption 'Tears & Cheers In Budget' [Herald -Saturday
July 25, 2005] has indeed brought cheers and tears of joy to our eyes to see
'DONA PAULA - VASCO TO BE SEA-LINKED.

At Goa Su-Raj we are more than happy and satisfied to note that our Road Map
is being leafed through for inspiration by the powers that be.

We believe that if the Party's Road Map is implemented in true spirit by who
so ever it may be by taking all the credit whatsoever to themselves, the
Party's wishes and endeavours will be accomplished even to the extent of the
Goa Su-Raj Party not having to be in the rat race of the 'hypocritic'
electoral processes. We shall happily retire.

PS: This Party does hope that the powers that be go on leafing through our
Road Map for Goa especially through the Chapter III (9) (f) (1) River
Fronts - Example, and make this dream come true for Panjimites in particular
and Goans in general. This is our Party's vision for the beautiful Ribandar

One of the hallmarks of secularism and secular justice is its commitment to
treat all religions and non-religions equal in all respects. So when someone
claims to fight for justice and human rights of people who are victims of
religious extremists and religious persecution, I immediately ask whether
he/she shares this ideal of secularism, and demonstrates it through his/her
words and/or actions.

One simple test of this ideal is to examine whether he/she has spoken out
against religious extremism and harmful practices of all religions and
ideologies, including his/her own. In India, this would mean that in addition
to speaking out against Hindu extremism, one would have to express one's
concern about Islamist terrorism, non-Hindu terrorism in the Northeast and
left-wing Maoist extremism in many parts of the country. Indeed, the latter two
are responsible for most of the deaths due to political violence each year in
India. This test is especially important when we are dealing with a priest of a
particular religion because he has an inseparable conflict of interest.

I am sorry to say that I have found no evidence that the religious figure in
question and the religio-political contributors to this forum have demonstrated
an even-handed and equitable treatment of extremists of all religions and
ideologies that affect India. There is nothing that dispels my suspicion that
their fight is more a parochial and self-centered agenda-driven crusade on
behalf of their coreligionists than a genuine fight for universal justice.

And when a priest who has stepped into the partisan political arena in a
secular country advocates that secular governments should listen to the advice
of his supreme religious leader, as he does in the following article on his
blog, I cannot help but be doubly suspicious.

Cheers,

Santosh

Ah, I've always said I have a long memory on Goanet :-)Now, let me put in as
succintly as I can:1. Men believe, making young girls dance naked, will
appease the rain-God.2. Men believe, letting young girls have convulsions,
will rid them of the devil possessing their body.Is there any tangible
difference between the two? No, both are irrational beliefs and the reason
we know they are irrational is because our body of knowledge has expanded.
It is just a matter of educating people to expand their body of knowledge.
With education comes change. Best,Selma
---
I knew you had a bone to pick with me (long time coming, I was waiting) I
too have a long memory.
Thanks for putting Pagan Rituals and Pota in the same bracket.

Belief in Paganism does not mean decent moral code of conduct has to be
ignored.
Your No 2. Yes, there is a huge difference, all girls do not want to take
their clothes off (even men for that matter).
Not all girls have convulsions (even educated people have convulsions, they
just get hypnotised).

All girls in that village were forced by the elders to strip if not they are
beaten, I have lived in Madhya Pradesh Jungle Mines for 5 years, I know the
punishment.

When I was in Pota one man started talking in tongues, no one else, his
sister said I knew he would do that (are you saying he and his sister are
not educated, he is a business man and she a teacher).
It is a choice to get psychologically traumatised, his sister chose not to
(education has nothing to do with convulsions).
Another woman started crying hysterically, she was removed, for being a
nuisance.
Another Hindu man came marching up to the alter and prostrated (attention
seeking) (that Hindu man was in the same bus with us).

Your No 3. Yes, our body willing to except knowledge should be educated. But
who will take on that task?
Certainly the Hindus have not done that as yet (2009), instead they kill the
missionaries who try to educate them.
Shouldn't the educated Hindus instead of going to the Banaras or the
Himalayas for personal purification of going to heaven, help the priests (I
mean to at least tell the people that these Priests do not BITE and see for
themselves too that these priests do not instigate violence; instead they
choose to talk big on Internet).

Its OK for FN to say let people believe in whatever they want to, if so, why
Afghanistan and Iraq?
If Hindus do not want to educate people in this 21st century of ours. What
chance have these people got?

Last of all, to have convulsions or not, it is a personal choice,(some do,
some dont).
There are young people who will marry outside their cast (or whatever) JUST
to annoy authority - these people will never get convulsion no matter how
much you try, instead they will give you one. That is the difference.
Caj.
Selma, after studying astrology (out of curiosity) - (Sir Isac Newton said
to his friends "if you have not studied astrology do not comment - I have").
I now know that you cannot change a person's psyche, if they are vulnerable
to be hypnotised they will, Daren Brown picks one out of 100 to be
hypnotised, because he knows they can be manipulated.

Not so fast, Santosh.
In a previous life in Africa, I would get five guys calling me on any weekend
when there was a full moon. They would want to take me out on their boat so
that I could show them the spots where lobsters went totally mad, walking
around in circles.

These guys were convinced that on a full moon, prawns, crabs and lobsters
went berserk and became easy prey. Much as I tried, I could not convince
anyone that the lobsters were always around.

The reason these guys spotted and shot lobsters is because they were
convinced that lobsters were easy prey on a full moon. When they paid
attention to lobster signs, they found lobsters.

As they say, a picture is worth a thousand words.
Here is a new moon/high tide lobster picture:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/45002...@n00/3289433676/sizes/l/in/photostream/

I am convinced that those who believe that the moon has an effect on their
brains, will er, get effected by that belief.

If Afonso de Albuquerque turned Portugal’s quest for oriental spices into an
aspiration
for an Eastern Empire, his dream began to crystallize during the tenure of the
greatest
administrator after him, Nuno da Cunha (1529-38.) Hormuz had been captured in
1515
and Malacca in 1519. Cunha consolidated Portuguese presence all over India. In
his
time, Portugal’s capital city in Africa-Asia was shifted from Cochin to Goa, in
1530.

In 1534, his 21-ship armada forced the Sultan of Gujarat to surrender the seven
islands
of “Bom Baiya” (Bombay) to the Portuguese. These, clubbed with nearby
possessions,
were called “Praças de Norte.” In 1536, Cunha intervened for the Nawab of
Bengal,
Muhammad Shah-III, against Sher Shah, and gained fort-factories in Chittagong,
then
Bengal’s principal city. Satgaon followed. He also secured trading rights in
Hooghly,
Bandel, Calcutta and several riverine areas in Bengal.

Cunha helped the Gujarat ruler and obtained Diu on the coast of Kathiawar. He
died on
board while sailing home in 1538, near the Portuguese island of Azores in the
Atlantic.
He was, by his wish, accorded a sea funeral.

The seeds sown by Nuno da Cunha would yield rich dividends. By 1555, the
dominion
around Bombay covered a much larger area, including the island of Salcete near
Thane.
The Portuguese had a dozen fort-factories in the Bombay area (Fort-Bombay,
Sewri,
Mahim, Worli, Bandra, Sion, Vasai, Arnala, Mahim Kelvi, Chaul, Morro de Chaul
and
Caranja.) Further north there were five forts, at Moti Daman, Nani Daman (Daman
was
captured in 1558), Diu and two at sea, “Fortim do Mar” and St. Antonio at
Simbor – the
last place in India to be freed in 1961. Bombay, as we know, would be one of
the largest
destinations of Goan émigrés, when under the British.

To the south of Goa, the Portuguese were entrenched in ten fort-factories: two
in
Cochin, one each in Calicut/Kozhikode, Quilon, Chaliyam, Cananore, Cranganore/
Kodungalur, all in Kerala, and in Mangalore, Barcelor/Basrur and Onor/Honavar.

The Portuguese spread in India opened new economic opportunities to Goans. Home
fires burning dim, they out-migrated to these places in large numbers. Hundreds
of
Goans did well in Bengal and the Gujarat, Malabar and Coromandel coasts.

Outside India, the Portuguese captured Ceylon (it was they who gave the island
nation
that name) and ventured far into the East. Other than Spice Islands, Malacca
and others
in the Malay Archipelago, they took Pacem in Sumatra and places in the
Indonesian and
South China seas, including Macao and Timor. Goans were in Macao by the 17th
century. Goan soldiers actually helped defend it in 1784.

With complete control of the African coasts, Bahrain and Oman in the Persian
Gulf,
India, Sri Lanka, right down to the South China Sea and the Celebes, Portugal
became
the undisputed master of Asian trade with Europe. And Goa, the capital city of
its
Eastern Empire, was referred to as "Goa Dourada," among other sobriquets. It
was said,
"Quem viu Goa, dispensa de ver Lisboa" (he who has seen Goa need not see
Lisbon.)
The city’s cosmopolitan population was variously estimated from 2,00,000 to
half-million.

Though Goan seafarers had links with East Africa in the 10th Century AD as
traders,
Portugal’s expansion in Africa from the point of view of emigration, assumes
relevance.
The first known Goan in Mozambique was Calisto, assistant to a missionary. Both
were
killed there in 1560. Goans helped the Portuguese colonialise Mozambique, and
in 1594,
to capture Mombassa.

Portugal’s empire blossomed in Africa, extending over large areas, from Guinea
in the
north, to Sudan, Congo, Angola, Benguela, Nigeria, Ghana (the Gold Coast),
Dahomy,
and Mombassa, to the islands of Pemba and Zanzibar.

As Portugal’s empire expanded in Africa, Goans in significant numbers emigrated
to
Portuguese Africa. There were adventurers, mercenaries, entrepreneurs, educated,
skilled and otherwise. Many made it big in business, some even enthroned
themselves
as local fiefs and kings. I named a few in ‘Goan Businessmen-4’ (‘Herald,’
16-Dec-2007.)

Today I’ll mention only the academic, Dr. Rosendo Ayres Ribeiro, who held
several
world patents, including one for malaria cure: qu

From: "Mario Goveia"

From: "isouza"

Precisely at this juncture we need prophets who will live and die for
Truth in the "secular" democracy. Catholic priests and lay people have the
duty to speak against abortion, which is a crime, and "gay marriage",
which is a contradiction in terms...scientifically, medically,
biologically, sociologically and ethically... What Fr.Cedric is doing is
not against his priestly vows, but the concrete expression of his
commitment and ministry for the people of God, particularly for the
oppressed ones.

The work of Fr.Cedric Prakash is a priestly ministry, it is not the work
of a politician only but of every citizen, within their limits. Fr.Cedric
is not "running for office".

Mario asks:

If he is not running for office what is all the fuss about?

If he is not running for office he can speak out all he wants regardless
of whether anyone agrees with him or not.

***This "logic" can suit somebody who is far in the diaspora and is not
concerned about the Dalits of India, but Fr.Cedric Prakash loves them, is
devoted to their welfare and is facing threats to his own life in defending
the fundamental rights of the children of God, the Dalits, the oppressed
people... He is not "running for office", but he is running after the
legitimate rights of our own brethren, and therefore he is concerned about
being heard by those who oppress them and by those whose duty is to defend
the Indian citizens...

Regards.
Fr.Ivo

Aye Joe,

I went to Marliz for their good ole plum cake...and the chap from
Carnataka (till he opened his bouche, I though he was amcho Goicho)
told me, ' ye bewda ke saat aachha laagta haai". Drunk at noon too, he
was this chap.
*sigh* I was told Marliz has been sold and someone from upcountry is
the new owner. There were no customers (Sol-sette aunties) and no
flies either. In my quest for the best Sol-sette plum cake, I did make
inquiries and its a fair bus ride away from Margao (no I ain't
telling, you don't mind no).

In the good old days, the whole area around Marliz was thick with the
plum cake aroma, the smell of burnt cake paper!

Aside from their patties, their chocolate roll cake was a short cut to
sinful heaven!!! Not to mention their uncomfortable wrought iron
chairs where well-fed Sol-sette aunties sat ackward trying to keep
their balance and the parties going directly from plate-to-mouth!!

Where patties go, good old Cajlin in the Cansaulim market is gone as
well (a few years ago...still around but...). Their prawn patties were
soft and flaky (no, I am not referring to the pompous posting Pedro
from Mississauga), spicy to let one one stream of sweat and sweet
onion and subtle saltiness of the prawn. Apparently the children are
doing well in some place called the Goulf!!!

OPEN LETTER

Date: 24th July 2009

To:

Shri Digambar Kamat,

Hon'ble Chief Minister,

Government of GOA.

Dear Shri. Kamat,

We are very much aware about your much publicised concern for Goa and your
repeated assurances to govern in the best interests of the 'aam admi'. This
burdensome challenge could perhaps leave you with hardly any time to recall the
political history of this great nation. If I may be permitted to remind you, it
was the Indian National Congress which struggled against British rule so that
the people of this country could shape their own destiny. It was the then Prime
Minister late Shri Rajiv Gandhi of the Congress Party, who 40 years after
India's independence from British rule, took the bold step to fulfill this
dream of independent India and the Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi by
introducing the 64th Amendment Bill to the Constitution of India in the Lok
Sabha on 15th May 1989 with the popular slogan of "Power to the people". The
dream became reality on 21st December 1992 when the motion on the 73rd
Constitution Amendment was finally carried through with the required three
-fourth majority in the Lok Sabha. But 15 years after the seventy-third
Constitution amendment the much promised and advertised power to the people of
Goa appears to have been lost in transit from New Delhi to Goa while the
precious natural resources in Goa's pristine villages gets plundered and it's
internationally acclaimed identity is systematically erased.

The persistence of the Goa Government in re-introducing the controversial Goa
Panchayat Raj (Amendment) Bill, 2009 with insignificant cosmetic changes is no
consolation to the people of Goa. Whether the bureaucrats swing into action if
the Village Panchayat does not execute the order within one month, or whether
they immediately get the Secretary of the Village Panchayat to execute the
orders, is of little consequence. The term 'order' itself reflects a colonial
mindset. The crux of the issue is the overriding powers that are increasingly
being vested in the hands of government officers (civil servants) and
semi-government corporations over a constitutionally elected Village Panchayat
which is recognised as an "institution of self-government" by the Constitution
of India. In a federal structure, does the Union Government order and direct a
State Government, or does it recommend and request?

This lame excuse that the present provisions of the Goa Panchayat Raj Act, 1994
do not provide sufficient powers to the Directorate of Panchayats to direct the
execution of an order in an appeal is not at all convincing. For that matter
there are several areas in which the Village Panchayat is helpless in executing
it's own orders and as a result injustice is caused to the people, but the
Government of Goa has done little over the last 15 years to give it more teeth.
The Supervisory Committees in the Gram Sabha are helpless in ensuring the
proper implementation of Panchayat works. There are umpteen instances where the
Gram Sabha (the apex body in the Village Panchayat) resolutions have not been
executed by the Sarpanch of the village. Has the Government of Goa through its
Directorate of Panchayats ensured that justice is done to the people? And where
does a citizen go when the Directorate of Panchayats drags its feet for years
together in dispensing justice over illegal const
ructions, blatant irregularities and corruption matters in Village Panchayats?
The same remedy that exists for seeking justice in the event that the
Directorate of Panchayats fails to deliver also exists in case the order of the
Directorate of Panchayats is not executed by the Village Panchayat.
Fortunately, myself, as an elected member of Village Panchayat and thereafter

a situation for an amendment would have arisen should a competent officer like

Selma Carvalho: Who the Bleep cares about British racism?

Title: Who the Bleep cares about British racism?
By: Selma Carvalho
Source: Goan Voice Daily Newsletter 26 July 2009

Full text:

In keeping with my last week's topic on racial slurs, it's interesting
indeed to note 19th century British views on Goa and Goans. When Richard
Burton, the indefatigable British explorer visited Goa circa 1846, while on
sick leave from the service of Her Majesty's Empire, apart from referring to
Goans as "niggers" and "blacks", thought of "this race as decidedly the
lowest in the scale of civilized humanity we have yet seen. In appearance
they are short, heavy, meager and very dark; their features are uncomely in
the extreme. They are dirtier than Pariahs, and abound in cutaneous
diseases." Perhaps Burton can be forgiven, for this rakish, British army
officer, who later became famous for leading an expedition to Lake
Tanganyika and entering Mecca disguised as a Muslim, was an untameable
maverick. His prose contained possibly every thought that popped into his
head and every emotion that found its way into his veins, and one has to
read his writings with a tremendous sense of humour. But, Burton wasn't the
only one echoing such sentiments about Goans around that time. In fact, what
he wrote was considered to be pretty accurate reporting by the British in
the 19th century.

A prominent British newspaper, The Graphic, had this to say about Goans in
September of 1890: "Goa is a sleepy Hollow of a place whose inhabitants have
no greater ambition than to find employment on British territory.in addition
to the natives, Goa has a considerable population of half-castes, who
although black as Africans, pride themselves as having Portuguese blood in
their veins. They are a pugnacious and litigious lot, and idle withal, not
to mention a little weakness for alcohol." Now the graphic was a very
popular illustrated paper, founded by William Luson Thomas, a social
reformer and, a contemporary and friend of Charles Dickens. He would have
moved in fairly liberal and progressive circles, and yet it wasn't
outrageous in England at the time to indulge in such stereotype and be
blighting about skin colour, for the same paper, on December 4, 1875, wrote:
"The inhabitants - the Goanese are a mixed breed of Portuguese, Hindoos and
Africans, "blacker in hue," a writer to the Daily Telegraph tells us "than
almost any natives of the Peninsular."

Even more galling than the bias against skin colour are the blatant
stereotypes by the British of Goans as butlers, cooks and ayahs, a phrase
alleged attributed to Nehru many years later, yet it was the British who
created this phrase and used it frequently. Following Portugal's reluctance
to parcel off Goa to the British in order to settle a royal debt, the Bombay
Telegraph in British India, grudgingly reported in 1857: "it seems that the
Portuguese have resolved to retain possession of Goa, preferring that it
should remain a nursery for cooks and ayahs." Nowadays of course such
outright racism would be unheard of in the UK although certain rags are
still steeply inclined towards conservative, left-wing and racially charged
biases.

It is ironic perhaps that the same race of "black Goans" were completely
entrusted and absolutely indispensable to the running of the civil services
in East Africa. Indeed, it often happened that when the white officer was on
tour of the bush country, the Goan clerk was left alone in charge of both
the money and the native Africa police force. On occasion having to defend
the outpost against attacks. It must be said however that post World War II,
British attitudes changed considerably not just towards Goans but generally
towards non-white populations, although one wonders if racism in the UK is
entirely a thing of the past.

Interestingly Fr Prakash was at the forefront in Relief and Rehabilitation

Later the Govt of India(CONGRESS!!!) awarded him the KABIR PURASKAR for his

And again, the Minorities Commission gave him the Minorities Rights Award

INDIA’S NATIONAL COMMISSION for Minorities has chosen Cedric
Prakash,
director of the Jesuit-run Prashant Centre for Human Rights, Justice and
Peace as the 2006 recipient of its Minorities Rights Award for his work in
the area of human rights in the country.

The Jesuit priest was also honoured this year with France’s Legion of
Honourfor his action on behalf of victims of the 2002 Gujarat
massacre. Father
Prakash dedicated this prize to Aminaben Rasool, a Muslim mother who saw her
son murdered during the 2002 massacre and has not been able to find his
body. In his acceptance speech, he talked not just about the plight of the
Muslims in Gujarat, but also that of the Kashmiri Pandits, displaced in
their own land owing to internal strife.

At a time when society is increasingly polarized and caste, language,
religious and ethnic groups fight for their own rights — even under the
minority grab — it is gratifying to see someone more concerned about the
rights of other communities than own. Undoubtedly, Fr Cedric Prakash is
involved the issues of religious persecution of his Christian community in
Gujarat, but he did not get stuck there as many would possibly have done. He
acted and intervened as a humanist, not just as a priest of the Catholic
Church just shepherding his own flock.

We need more such examples of people who subsuming their own identity, look
beyond the confines of the narrow domestic walls and see the scene beyond
and react and respond appropriately. It is particularly helpful that he can
switch from being a defender of Muslims in Gujarat to being a spokesperson
for the cause of the displaced Kashmiri Pandits. It’s unfortunate that the
issue is not regarded as rights violation, but rather, has been pushed to
the realm of Hindu-Muslim subject, as pointed out by some rights watchers.

Interactions with intellectuals and activists reveal that in actual fact
neither the government nor the social organizations are sincerely trying to
restore the dignity of the Pandits who are living as refugees in their own
country.

Many years ago, December 06, 1992, when the Babri Masjid structure was

Dear Fr Ivo,

I know it is not illegal to be unreasonable; I wonder if it is ethical to be
so.

I am glad that you placed "gay marriage" in italics. For, all the
individuals who are homosexuals wish - are their civil rights (as in
succession and hospital visitation rights for loved ones). I doubt they
would care about the word "marriage" in their relationship.

In the same vein, I ask: Is mandatory celibacy .reasonable or even

And ...would you agree (or perhaps not) - That celibacy should be by choice
and should not be enforced?

Like Santoshbab, I am intrigued (but not surprised) that you would place
homo-sexuality et abortion in the same class as incest, homicide and
pedophilia.

I leave you with this question - allow me to ascertain if "we" are even
marginally capable of 'reasonableness'.

### If a pregnant woman's life is threatened with the continuation of her

Giving her Carrot Juice and 'Homeopathic remedies which cure everything

I have faint but fond memories of Marliz, as a child who was born
hardly 200 meters from Marliz in my mother's place. I still remember the smell
of coffee. I also remember some posters on the wall; things like "smile" and
stuff like that.

These are early memories of a place which I found to be the most sophisticated
in Margao.

I dont think we should let Marliz close. We should revive it. Any takers?

Truth in the "secular" democracy. Catholic priests and lay people have the

a contradiction in terms...scientifically, medically, biologically,

The work of Fr.Cedric Prakash is a priestly ministry, it is not the work

However, I don't believe the debate is about Fr. Prakash simply speaking

I can see the word "liberation" does ring a bell with those who

Mario and the Fixed News Crew are welcome to that "Liberation"
theology err make-believology.

Mario responds:

Any rational person would know that the Gundagiri was that of the Portuguese
who conquered and colonized Goa by force and exploited it for hundreds of years.

JC wrote:

I am not going to discuss that here - until Mario can show us where
the 'fugetios' are. Isn't that the reason why the Bushies moved their

Mario responds:

Any rational person would know that the thousands killed in Iraq were killed by
Muslim sectarian fanatics, aided and abetted by Al Qaeda, Iran and Syria, and
with the immoral support of those who would have preferred the dictatorship of

The opponents of the liberation war-monger among us is the brutal

victims of the brutal dictatorship agree with me.

JC wrote:

Perhaps, Mario Goveia will show me the word "liberation" in the pdf
reference he provided. Perhaps, he does not understand English.

Mario responds:

One needs a modicum of common sense and sequential logic to follow this:

The Portuguese had conquered Goa by force and colonized it for hundreds of
years. In 1961, after refusing to comply with the precedents set by Britain
and France and numerous requests to vacate the premises, they were firmly
evicted by the Indian Army. Thus Goa was liberated from the European invaders
and colonists. The pdf reference was of the treaty by which the Portuguese
accepted their defeat and ceded sovereignty of the colonies they had forcibly
annexed back to India.

JC wrote:

Now why go to the UN which Mario and those war-mongers do not
recognise when it is inconvenient, Look at what the Indian Supreme
Court had to say 12 years before Mario Soares and Yeshwant Chavan
signed the 1974 accord.

(M. Hidayatullah, C.J., S. M. Sikri, R.S. Bachawat, G. K. Mitter and
K.S. Hegde, JJ.)

'Goa ANNEXED by India after swift military action'

Mario responds:

It is simply a fact that Goa was annexed from the Portuguese colonists after
swift military action after they had occupied Goa illegally for hundreds of
years. What's wrong with that? When a foreign invader is kicked out the area
they had previously annexed by force is "liberated" from them, by definition.

The subsequent treaty simply recognized this fact.

JC wrote:

Nuff said!

Mario concludes:

Precisely. By any rational definition, Goa was annexed and liberated by force
from the Portuguese invaders who had previously annexed it by force.

Gabe,

But surely, he will jump up and down and tell you that it is OK for
Pedru from Betalbatim to trespass into his house because he (our man)
was suspected of pouring Caju Feni over his wife; This the same Caju
Feni that Pedru had sold him.

His reasoning would be thus:

1: He had used Caju Feni before 'on his own relatives' because they
were unruly. (We only use Agente Laranja)

2: He was (according to faulty intelligence) "believed" to have
contact with the dreaded 'Colemaos'.

3: Sacramento Colemao was once in O-High-O to receive medical
treatment. This was proof of contact.

4: There was also a 'sexed-up' dossier (foreward by Antonio Boratt)
that He (our Man) was capable of throwing Caju Feni all over the
rusty-belt in 45 seconds.

5: The 'inspectors' cannot find the Caju Feni - not because - the caju
does not exists (as he claims) but because he is moving it from room
to room.

6: Why can't he prove it that he does not have Caju Feni? When last
did he pour Caju Feni on his wife?

Such is the logic of the Fixed News brainwashed.

No wonder - amcho Urakbaba has to now do the 'cleaning up' while

These are the same guys ...who were so "Kris-chen" -lee horrified with

But hey wait for him. He will make his usual spiel with his usual

It seems only yesterday that the memories have been triggered by your

Missing coffee at Goa's Marliz in Margao Armstrong Vaz Sat, Jul
25, 2009 14:46:30 IST THE CLOSED shutters of Marliz restaurant, once
Margao's much sought-after eating hole and a meeting point for the Satiskars
(residents of Salcete taluka in the Indian state of Goa), points to yet
another grim story. A sad tale of yet another Goan enterprise folding up.
The place had become synonymous with the high and mighty of Salcete as they
discussed the day's hot stories over coffee while enjoying the fragrance and
greenery of the Margao Municipal garden.

Just as Mumbai's once famous and now closed Bastani restaurant was a perfect
place for Goans to start their day, back home Satiskars craved for Marliz's
coffee. If Basanti's meat mince was once highly-prized by Goans, here in
Margao it was coffee which ruled the roost at Marliz. There are many stories
of marriage, business deals, jobs, career options and land deals woven
around Marliz. But the name Marliz, has a story of its own. Like the Taj
Mahal, here was a man inspired by love for his wife, to name his business
venture after her - Maria and Luiza; she died soon after its establishment.

For many Salcete residents,it was not only about having their first morning
coffee while reading newspapers here, it went much beyond that. Its ideal
location, a few meters away from the old Margao bus station, meant that it
drew customers from varied fields. It served as a link for many
professionals, teachers and government servants. It was a place where the
creamy layer of Salcete met over a cup of coffee. Having your morning coffee
at Marliz was just an excuse for the gossip-happy Goans to make their way
to the restaurant. There were many items on the menu you could pick up for
your breakfast, but there were others which were not served by the Marliz
staff, but which came as side "assortments".

The morning newspapers had all the news that the Satiskars asked for. But
some craved for news which did not go into print - the untold stories of
affairs, bribery scandals, and more hot news. Its client base came from the
far-off villages of Cavelossim to Cansaulim, Curtorim to Cuncolim, Quepem to
Raia. Ask Assolna-based Panchayat Secretary Theophilo Almeida or his
politician-cum-businessman friend John Baretto from Benaulim and they will
have numerous stories to tell, related as they were to Marliz. It was here
that land deals, engagement proposals, career options, job opportunities and
business options were discussed and fine-tuned.

If you wanted to bribe some government official then there were people to
guide you to that effect. The collector's building was a stone's throw away
from Marliz. The high and mighty from the collector's building came to
Marliz to have coffee. They needed the caffeine dose to give them the
adrenalin rush for their routine work. As college students, we sometimes ran
into our professors he

Ah, I've always said I have a long memory on Goanet :-)

Now, let me put in as succintly as I can:

1. Men believe, making young girls dance naked, will appease the rain-God.
2. Men believe, letting young girls have convulsions, will rid them of the
devil possessing their body.

Is there any tangible difference between the two? No, both are irrational
beliefs and the reason we know they are irrational is because our body of
knowledge has expanded. It is just a matter of educating people to expand their
body of knowledge. With education comes change.

Best,
Selma

It is easy to ridicule beliefs we don't subscribe to, whether we were
born in a tradition or otherwise. We will always compare The Other
unfavourably with Us, and our beliefs. Don't you think that we should
simply let people believe in what they want to, instead of trying to
tell others how wrong they are? More so, when their beliefs don't
imping on us in any manner whatsoever? FN

http://lists.goanet.org/pipermail/goanet-goanet.org/2009-July/180028.html

Anne and Joaquim were
grandparents of Jesus Christ. They were
an exemplary couple. Theirs was the best
family next only to their daughter’s, Mary’s, which comprised of Mary, Joseph
and Infant Jesus.

Anne and Joaquim spent most of
their time in prayers. They were simple,
pious, God-fearing, patient, kind-hearted and a peaceful couple.

When Mary was three years old,
Anne took her to a temple and offered her to God’s service and thus she
fulfilled her promise.

In the past, people only
celebrated St. Anne’s feast on July 26, and St. Joaquim’s feast was celebrated
in August. However, in the recent past
we have been celebrating their feast jointly on July 26.

This feast gives us an
opportunity to remember our old parents, grandparents and other elderly people
in our neighborhood/parish, who may be ailing in their homes and helpless.

They looked after us and took
care of us when they were in good health.
Today, they are old and frail and need our assistance and shelter. Just
because they are old, we should not dump
them in a corner or admit them to Old-Age homes.

We must behave with
responsibility towards our old parents, grandparents and other elderly people,
and set a good example to our children, as otherwise they will follow and repay
us in the same coins as per the good old Konkani saying: “Korta tea mapan
bhogta” (You get repaid in
the same coins.)

At this great feast, let us
emulate St. Anne and St. Joaquim, follow in their footsteps and promise to look
after and take care of our elderly.

St. Anne’s feast is celebrated
all over Goa but it is celebrated with more
fervor in the South. Per my knowledge, besides
Telaulim (Santana), the following churches in Goa
are dedicated to St. Anne:

Parra Church

Olavlim (Pomburpa) Church

Boddiem (Tivim) Church

Ponda Church

Agonda Church, and

One chapel in Saligao.

In Anjuna church, we have an
altar on the left of its entrance dedicated to St. Anne. At home, we still
have in our oratorio or
olotor a small wooden statue of St. Anne, which was brought from our maternal
grandparents’ house in Benaulim around sixty years ago.

St. Anne’s feast is also known as
“Tovxeanchem fest” (Feast of Cucumbers.)
This being the season of “tovxim” (cucumbers), people offer the
vegetable at the feet of St. Anne and make a humble request.

The tovxeanchem feast is
celebrated with great pomp and gaiety at the 310-odd-years old St. Anne Church,
Santana-Telaulim. The historic church is
unique in the whole of Asia for its hollow
walls and is one of the best examples of Indian baroque. It is a heritage
monument of great importance
in Goa.

The church was founded in 1577
but was rebuilt by Msgr Francisco de Rego 1681-1689, and completed by his
successor, Fr. Antonio Francisco da Cunha in 1695.

It is believed that while the
edifice was under construction, an old lady appeared in a vision to a senior
villager and she told him that the church was her home and she wanted to live
in it. Another old lady from the village
also saw the same vision.

The church had not been dedicated
to any patron saint till then. And so,
the church was dedicated to St. Anne.

Newly wedded couples go to
Telaulim, offer a cucumber at the feet of St. Anne and petition:

Portuguese:  ‘Senhora, tomai pepino, dai me menino’;

Konkani: ‘Saibinni, hem tovxem
ghe ani mhaka ek ballok di’ (Our Lady, take this cucumber and give me a child.)

It is not only the childless
couples who go to Telaulim, bachelors and spinsters, too, go there. Bachelors
take a long spoon and petition:

Portuguese:  ‘Senhora, tomai colher, dai me mulher’;

Konkani: ‘Saibinni, hem kuler ghe
ani mhaka bail di’ (Our Lady, take this spoon and give me a wife.)

Similarly, spinsters take some
lentils and beseech the saint:

Portuguese:  ‘Senhora, tomai urido, dai me marido’;

Konkani: ‘Saibinni, hi uddid-dal
ghe ani mhaka ghov di.” (Our Lady, take this uddid-dal and give me a husband.)

It is a tradition that has been
followed for long and is significant to the things presented. A ‘kuler’
(spoon) relates more to women and
‘ballok’ (infant) to the males.

The feast of St. Anne and St. Joaquim
falls on July 26, but in Telaulim it is c

Your memory has served you right (I knew you would get at me some later
date, I have been to Potta before you to see the acting).
There is a big difference -- You have to see the broader picture.

Exorcism is spiritualsm without blood letting and no offering of virgins at
the high alter, plus it is voluntary activity on a person who is
psychologically trumatised, no forced labour or sacrificial offerings.

Just focing naked virgins to plough the field? It just doesn't end there.
Have you not heard about the 'Incas' of Peru?
I did write about this before, about Panjim blood sacrifice (JoeGoauk's
photos) but the moderaters curtailed my post.
"Human sacrifice", - and you want the journalist to be there taking pictures
(its just not going to happen).

What makes you say that the above will not take place after this naked
ritual and there is still no rain?
One has to see the broader picture and the consequences.

JAGO GRAHAK JAGO

Should there be a rise in the petrol/diesel cost, poor Pvt Bus owners etc
have to wait for months or years to get the same reflected in the bus
fares.
It has to be approved by the Cabinet, then wait for official notification
etc.

Although our Taxi –walas, Ricksaw walas and Motor-cycle pilot walas are
also governed by the same RTO or RTA law, they wait for no one.
Every petrol price rise there is an always fare rise which is fixed by
themselves.

In about 12 months, their charges increased by up to 67%
e.g. 12 months ago, motor cycle pilot charges from Bus stand to Miramar
Beach was Rs.30.
then it gone up to 40 and now after the recent rise in the petrol, it is
Rs.50

Those who were charge 25, now charge 30 and so on.

Again, Rickshaw were charging 40-50, then straight gone upto Rs.70 and now
Rs.80-90

Minimum charges Rs.30-40

Even if you are a regular traveler, it is advisable to ask for the charges
before you actually sit on/in it.

This is to avoid overcharging and arguments.

What the current official charges or tariff for two and three whelers?
Is there any such info on their website?

Goa hikes entry fees to casinos ten times

PANAJI: In a bid to dissuade youths from visiting off shore casinos, the
Goa Government on Friday increased its entry fees by ten times and also
hiked the fee to procure license to serve liquor on the floating
gambling houses.

While the entry fee has gone up from Rs 200 to Rs 2,000, the license fee
has increased from Rs 25,000 to Rs 10,00,000. Presenting the additional
budget, Goa's Chief Minister, who also holds the Finance portfolio,
termed the decision to hike the entry fee as a step to discourage the
youths from falling prey to the lure of casinos.

"Youth are the future of the state and we do not wish that they spend
their money in casinos and fall prey to the vices of gambling," he said.
Mr Kamat said the increased entry fee would add Rs 36.50 crore annually
to the state exchequer.

The budget also proposed to increase the license processing fee for
retail sale of liquor on vessels or crafts used for the purpose of
gambling and having license for casino from Rs 25,000 to Rs 10,00,000.

Goa has five off shore casinos in its waters which have come under
scanner time and again from several NGOs and Opposition members. The
Bharatiya Janata party, which had led a scathing attack on government

http://www.merinews.com/article/missing-coffee-at-goas-marliz-in-margao/15777065.shtml
Missing coffee at Goa's Marliz in Margao Armstrong Vaz Sat, Jul
25, 2009 14:46:30 IST THE CLOSED shutters of Marliz restaurant, once
Margao’s much sought-after eating hole and a meeting point for the Satiskars
(residents of Salcete taluka in the Indian state of Goa), points to yet
another grim story. A sad tale of yet another Goan enterprise folding up.
The place had become synonymous with the high and mighty of Salcete as they
discussed the day’s hot stories over coffee while enjoying the fragrance and
greenery of the Margao Municipal garden.

Just as Mumbai’s once famous and now closed Bastani restaurant was a perfect
place for Goans to start their day, back home Satiskars craved for Marliz’s
coffee. If Basanti’s meat mince was once highly-prized by Goans, here in
Margao it was coffee which ruled the roost at Marliz.

There were many items on the menu you could pick up for
your breakfast, but there were others which were not served by the Marliz
staff, but which came as side “assortments”.

The morning newspapers had all the news that the Satiskars asked for. But
some craved for news which did not go into print – the untold stories of
affairs, bribery scandals, and more hot news.

The collector’s building was a stone's throw away
from Marliz. The high and mighty from the collector’s building came to
Marliz to have coffee. They needed the caffeine dose to give them the
adrenalin rush for their routine work. As college students, we sometimes ran
into our professors here. In the college canteens we did not have a chance
to share the same table with our teachers and have coffee. Here at Marliz we
did. If the high and mighty strengthen their professional, social and
business links with their association with Marliz, there is another untold
story about Stanley Coutinho, a newspaper vendor, who did business from his
counter outside the restaurant, until the High Court decision to clear all
building passages led to his doom.

He was evicted from the place like many others during the late 90s, in a
drive enforced by the Margao Municipality follwing High Court orders. Others
who were evicted slowly returned to the place, but Coutinho lost in his
fight for survival. The high and mighty who were once so good to him, failed
to bail him out of the situation, leading Coutinho to shut his business
forever. His place has now been taken over by a non-Goan newspaper vendor
who sells newspapers from the foothpath, a few meters away from Marliz. Yet
another non-Goan doing business at the expense of a Goan. But the story of
Marliz has not being entirely wiped away from the Goan radar. Another sister
concern stills operates in the same building of Margao’s Grace church,
selling cakes and Goan sweets. Hope is round the c

*The Health Officer PHC Aldona has instructed some residents of
Povacao Ward in Moira to refrain from using well water for human
consumption with immediate effect.* (PHCS/09-10/407 of 01/07/09).

The reason why the wells of Povoacao Moira are not fit for drinking
is most almost certainly because septic tanks have leaked and polluted
the groundwater. Builders and contractors are responsible for this
apart from the authorities who should be regulating them.

These authorities are:

Goa State Pollution Control Board
Directorate of Health Services
Planning Authorities: the PDA /TCP
Local Authorities: Village Panchayats / Directorate of Panchayats
PWD : Public Health E /Water Resources Dept.

Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB) has rules for the
prevention, control or abatement of pollution of streams and wells in
the State of Goa (see - Extraordinary Gazette (Series I No. 50) dated
10th March 2000.) Obviously these are not being followed.

The reasons for this problem are:
1) Septic tanks are being built that do not meet safety standards.
2) Building societies in small plots of land add drastically to the
problem of ground water contamination.
3) Contractors flout all the rules of sanitation in the labour camps
that they erect at building sites.
4) Irresponsible contractors use heavy duty pumps to draw water from
the existing wells causing a fall in water levels of surrounding
wells. This makes the well water salty.

The Water Act, 1974 has made it mandatory *that soak pits shall not
be permitted within 20 metres distance from any source of drinking
water?.* This condition is vital for the survival of a village like
Moira.

What happens in Moira must be happening in villages all over Goa. If
the Government does not take action then people all over Goa will have
to drink toilet water.

RESPONSE: It is not true that the man does not recognize the U.N. When it
suits he quotes that Sadaam did not conform to the U.N's requirements. When
it suits the man gives short shrift to the BBC, Al Jazeera, the Times of
Londonequally when it suits he cuts and pastes freely from these august
institutions.

The man does not know the meaning of liberation fullstop.

Tell that to the 5 million displaced Iraqis, 2 million of whom are refugees
in Jordan and Syria; sure they are very very happy, if not estatic that they
have been 'liberated' by George Bush.

Tell that to the Hundreds of thousand of Christians who had to flee Iraq
because of the 'liberation'.

Equally tell that to the Goans who were not consulted after being
'liberated', whether they wished to be assimilated into India - heck at
least they didn't do the same to East Pakistan!

In short liberation, libation same thing for the 'it's Miller time' man.

Every petrol price rise there is an always fare rise which is fixed by

In about 12 months, their charges increased by up to 67%
e.g. 12 months ago, motor cycle pilot charges from Bus stand to Miramar Beach
was Rs.30.
then it gone up to 40 and now after the recent rise in the petrol, it is  Rs.50
Those who were charge 25, now charge 30 and so on.

Again, Rickshaw were charging 40-50, then straight gone upto Rs.70 and now
Rs.80-90
Minimum charges Rs.30-40

Even if you are a regular traveler, it is advisable to ask for the charges

Konkani-speaking People of Mumbai realizing need to Unite

Mumbai, Jul 24: Goan Review Art Foundation (GRAF), in association with
Konkani Association-Mumbai (KAM), organized a Konkani seminar on
'Mumbointlea Konknneacho Ekvott Koso Zoddop?' and 'Mumbointle
Goenkarance Kudd ani Sonstha Koxeo Samballop?' on July 19, 2009 at St
Sebastian Goan High School Hall, Dabul at 4.00 pm. 67 people attended
the seminar.

Fausto V da Costa, president of GRAF, commenced the seminar by
impressing upon the audience the need to get all the Konkani speaking
people of the metro together and the need to protect the Konkani
Associations and Clubs (Kudd) in Mumbai.

General secretary of Konkani Bhasha Mandal, Maharashtra and Konkani
writer and activist Lawrence D'Souza, Kamani, the main speaker of the
session said, "There are about 50 lac Konkani-speaking people in India
and about 12 lac in Mumbai alone. In the initial years of 19th century,
the people were mostly staying in the stretch between Colaba to Sion in
the east and up to Mahim in the west. Therefore, it was not difficult to
get the people together to attend functions and tiatrs, plays etc. Life
was good and people got time to meet. But now, the people have spread to
Dombivli and Mira Road. The life style has undergone a sea change.
Travelling has become tedious, particularly after a days hard work and
people look forward to relax after reaching home. The TV has further
made it attractive to stay at home to watch the programmes at leisure."

He then elaborated that Konkani language being spoken in different
states is now being written in their own script. As of now, Konkani is
being written in Roman, Devnagiri, Kannada, Malayalam and Urdu
(Persian/Arabic). He pointed out, that each area has adopted a number of
words from the local language into Konkani like Portuguese in Goa, Tulu
in Mangalore, Malayam in Kerala, Marati in Maharashtra etc. As a result
a dialect of any one area is not understood fully by all. He said, this
has been creating a major stumbling block in bringing all the
Konkani-speaking people together.

"In modern times we must particularly pay attention to the youth.
Now-a-days, the youths have become computer-savvy. We must use the
computer and the internet to propagate our language. One simple method
is to post difficult words one by one, giving details along with it,
like meaning, pronunciations etc. We have a platform in the form of
Konkani Basha Mandal, Maharashtra, to promote Konkani. This has been in
existence for the last 66 years and has had a chequered existence," he
explained. He pointed out that as of now, there are many Konkani
associations and named a few. However, there is no unity among the
Konkani-speaking people," he lamented.

He further reminded the audience that there is a big treasure of works
done in Konkani by our ancestors. "We must take advantage of this and go
forward irrespective of which state we belong to," he exhorted.

In conclusion, Fausto mooted the idea of forming a federation of all
Konkani associations in Mumbai. The activities of the associations could
then be controlled. He further explained that the Konkani Bhasha Mandal,
Maharashtra being the oldest Konkani institution in Mumbai having Goans,
Mangaloreans, Sawantwadis, Karwaris, Saraswats etc., as its members,
could act as the mother association to all the Konkani associations in
Mumbai. The second part was the registration of Goan Clubs. The
discussion proceeded with Fausto recollecting the discussions held
during the last seminar on March 29, 2009. One club reported that they
had a problem where the manager was not co-operating with the members by
not getting the original documents from an illegal occupant who was
forced to leave the premises. Members of that club were advised to call
for a general body meeting of the club and get a new manager elected and
also to file a police case that the documents of the club have been
illegally taken away. Another club had a problem of guest members trying
to take over the club and selling it. However, one senior member managed
to get the support from the village in Goa including a letter from the
Sarpanch, after which he got the members from Goa and held an election
and formed a new committee.

ST status: Gouly community DNA sent for testing

PANAJI: The DNA of the Gouly community of Goa has been sent to the
Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology, Hyderabad for testing if it
qualifies for the central government's Scheduled Tribe status. The
social welfare department informed the assembly last week in a written
reply to a question tabled by the Quepem MLA Babu Kavlekar.

The state government, informing about the status of the proposal for
grant of ST status to the Gouly or Dhangar community in Goa, stated that
an anthropological study report of the community in Goa is being done by
the Karnataka university, Dharwad and the same is awaited.

While stating that the government is serious' about the proposal, the
reply states that the Karnataka university has informed that DNA
analysis report on the Gouly of Goa is awaited from Centre for Cellular
and Molecular Biology, Hyderabad.

The reply states that after receipt of the report, the same will be
placed before the state government for decision and thereafter the same
will be submitted to the central government for appropriate decision.
Goa has around 19 other backward classes and demands for inclusion of
more communities keep pouring in. Initially, Gavdi, Kunbi, Velip and
Dhangar were the first communities to be included in the list of OBCs,
but recently the first three (Gavdi, Kunbi and Velip) have been included
in the list of Scheduled Tribes of Goa.

They are considered the original settlers of Goa. The ST population is
said to be about 1.5 lakh while the OBCs comprise about 4 lakh. The
issue of granting the status of Scheduled Tribes to Gouly community, or
dhangars as they are referred to, has been hanging fire for some time.
The state government had originally proposed to include four
communities, Gavdi, Kunbis, Velips and Dhangars, but three communities
were accorded recognition recently.

Inclusion of Dhangars or Goulis in ST list was opposed by some sections
on the ground that they are migrants from neighbouring state and not a
Goan tribe. However, some say that Portuguese records, which refer to
Goan people's life styles, indicate that they belong to Goa. Therefore,
research on the community has been undertaken to determine their status.

How interesting? The post appended below was apparently provided to educate me,
and to refute my contention that people convert to a new religion because they
come to believe or are told that their old religion is worse than their new
one. The funny thing is that, not only does it provide random anecdotes that
hilariously support my contention, but that it gives further insight into this
type of unrelenting sectarian chauvinism that we see on Goanet in various
disguises.

Here we are given cherry-picked examples of conversion from Hinduism, Islam,
agnosticism and Anglicanism to Catholicism. All roads are selectively diverted
to Rome, so to speak. Not even a single anecdotal case selected is of a
conversion from Catholicism to something else. No prizes for guessing why.

But coming to my original point, nearly every single convert in the anecdotes
below confirms, rather than refutes the essence of what I was saying. Each
person clearly states or implies that his/her native religion was bad in some
way, and definitely worse than the new religion of Catholicism which he/she
converted to. I give below the relevant quotes:

"My grandfather, every bit the virtuous priest, had enormous influence over
me..But even in my early, formative years I was unable to relate to the
religion he fervently practiced. Later, in my school days, I once spent my
summer holidays with him in Trichy. Memories of dawn walks with him, for the
ritualistic dip in the Cauvery river, cow in tow, are still fresh in my memory.
I learnt many shlokas, some of which I still remember. But I never understood
any of it and none of it helped me connect with God."
.Anand Mahadevan

"It was during this period that I began carefully studying the Quran. However,
I found I could not digest the teachings."
.Syed Ainul Hadeed

"I go for prayer meetings regularly and I have renounced all forms of idol
worship."
..Rajeev Menon

"But my faith was shattered when I came across a verse in the Quran that
prescribed corporal punishment for stubborn women. I was shockedI found
Christianity a far more liberating religion."
..Salma Ali

"Every Thursday, we also prayed to Sai Baba. At least 150 devotees would turn
up at our house for the prayer sessions. Frankly, I could not make any sense of
the rituals and yearned for a relationship with a god I could talk to, a god
who would listen to me when I spoke to him."
..Jaya Ramamurthy

Please also note the negative reason Muggeridge gave for converting to
Catholicism:

"It was the Catholic Church's firm stand against contraception and abortion
which finally made me decide to become a Catholic."
.Malcolm Muggeridge
