Contact: goaengineer...@aol.com A very interesting ;point raised by Messrs. Mario Goveia and Vivian D'Souza. It would appear that sufficient attention has not been paid on essential conditions for a would be world power so far, by the powers that be in the Indian polity. For a nation to be strong , it not only needs economic strength but the most essential condition is the availability of human capital with wholesome psyche. A brahmin may say he was born ''superior'' therefore India is a superior nation. Pryanka Chopra is a beautiful woman therefore all Indian women are beautiful. What a fallacy!!! For three millennia or more, the psyche of the majority of people was subjected to psychological terrorism converting our population into jellies. Casteist oppression has resulted in the general listlessness of the people. Education helps in places like China, Indonesia, sub-Saharan Africa etc., But in case of India a lot of social upliftment work will have to be done to elevate the Indian psyche to a reasonable level and this in itself will amount to centuries of hard work.Meanwhile, India, I am afraid, will have to wait for an ideal situation to arise, and make a mark as a world power. Contact: goaengineer...@aol.com How did Goans get on board ships? Why were the Goans welcomed to British India? Wasn't it because they were freed from the taboos that the rest of the Indians adhered to? I think I read somewhere on this forum that Goans were neither good cooks nor good butlers, but were willing to handle anything, hence they were accepted/trained by their employers in the jobs that they did. Question to AM: Who facilitated the Goans to lose their taboos? Then again, as many a traveller will tell you, (well, at least in the 70s they would tell you), once you've crossed the border, you knew you were in/out of Goa - the very architectural styles, the people's behaviour would be strikingly different. Today of course, the demarcation line may have watered down considerably. For what its worth, these differences have nothing to do with Goans working on board ships / toiling in BI. Another question to AM: What caused this difference? The spirit of self-denial and self-sacrifice marks the life of truly great men and women. What we believe in and the values that we profess are tested and revealed only through our actions. Words are empty unless we back them with deeds! Let’s have a grace-filled weekend asking for the strength to reveal our faith in action! Fr. Jude Sunday Reflections: Twenty-fourth Sunday of the year ‘Our Faith is seen in deeds! 13-Sep-2009 Isaiah 50: 5-9; James 2: 14- 18; Mark 8: 27-35; In today’s first reading the suffering servant of Yahweh despite the opposition of his fellow human beings believes that he will be vindicated by God. The suffering servant suffers not merely in spite of his innocence but precisely because of it and further because of his preaching and teaching mission. Readiness to Face Death When the Berkenhead sank, Alexander Russell, a young officer aged seventeen, was ordered to command one of the boats which carried women and children. As they were pushing off, a sailor who was drowning clasped the side of the boat, but there was no room for even one more. A woman on the boat cried: “Save him! He is my husband.” Russell rose, jumped clear of the boat, and amidst a chorus of “God bless you!” he sank in the water, which was full of sharks and was seen no more, the sailor being pulled in to take his place. Anthony Castle in ‘More Quotes and Anecdotes’ In today’s second reading James, here insists on the necessity for action for the Christian. Our faith must find its expression in service to others, especially the needy. The worship of God and service to others are inseparable, they are like two sides of the same coin. Works than emanate merely from fulfilling the law are fruitless, our works should be the result of our love for God and his people. James is talking of the fruit of the seed of God’s word which must issue in daily life. Double Lives G. K. Chesterton has a story about a popular philanthropist. The main reason for his popularity was his unfailing good humour. No one bothered to ask how he managed to be always happy. They assumed he was born an optimist. But then one day he was found dead in mysterious circumstances. Foul play was immediately suspected. However, the case completely baffled the police. Eventually it was Chesterton’s unlikely detective, Fr Browne, who solved the case. His verdict – the man committed suicide. At first the people refused to accept Fr Browne’s verdict. They couldn’t imagine how such a happy man could commit suicide. But then it emerged that there was a serious side to the funny man. The man who made others laugh was in fact a deeply depressed man. But he could never tell anyone how he really felt. The man had two lives. One open, seen and known by all, the other secret, and known only to himself. In public he was the man who smiled at everyone. But in private he was wounded and desperate. He felt he had to live up to people’s expectations in return for their attention and esteem. He was never able to be himself. Finally, he realized that his whole life was based on a lie. The strain of trying to maintain the public image became so great that he could no longer cope with it. So he committed suicide. Flor McCarthy in ‘Sunday and Holy Day Liturgies’ In today’s gospel we see Jesus teaching the crowds and at the same time trying to form his own disciples. He has come to reveal God’s plan of salvation and his own part in God’s plan. He tries to see if they are aware of his true identity and purpose in life, so he asks them: “Who do people say that I am?” The disciples tell him that some believe he is John the Baptist, some others say, he is Elijah, and still others believe that he is one of the prophets. The answers are perhaps flattering, they acknowledge that he is no ordinary human being; he is one of the prophets or certainly one of the greatest of the prophets. But Jesus needs a clearer answer. So he asks a direct question: “And you, who do you say that I am?” Peter on behalf of the apostles makes that solemn statement; “You are the Christ, the Son of God!” Peter certainly was not aware of the full impact of his confession. Faith had made him pronounce Jesus as the Christ of God. Jesus accepts

After imposing curfew in three towns in the region, the state administration detained several leaders from the saffron camp, including senior BJP leader Gopinath Munde, as they tried to reach communally tense towns of Sangli and Miraj. These cities have been under curfew for the past two days. The neighbouring textile town of Ichalkaranji too has been brought under curfew after incidences of arson and assaults were reported on Monday evening. The trouble started on September 3, when some pro-Hindutva organisations tried to raise an arch on the immersion procession route depicting the killing of Afzal Khan, the Mughal Sardar in the court of Aurangzeb, by the Maratha king Shivaji. A section of the society objected to it following which communal clashes broke out in the area. In protest, Ganesh mandals did not immerse the idols. The organisers allegedly also held a “victory rally” near the arch, depicting all the followers of Chhatrapati Shivaji in saffron and Afzal Khan supporters in green. Sensing trouble, local police summoned about two dozen important Muslim community leaders and requested them to ignore the developments. “But, as it always happens, some miscreants exploited the situation to give it a communal twist especially in view of the recently-concluded Ganesh Utsav festival, the ongoing Ramzan month and the ensuing assembly elections,” Shendgle said. Worried about the communal flare up, the district administration imposed curfew on Sunday. Sangli Superintendent of Police (SP) Krishna Prakash said the curfew will be in force till 2 pm on Tuesday. About 300 people from both communities have been arrested, the police said. On Monday, Shiv Sena leaders Neelam Gorhe, Diwakar Raote and Parshuram Uparkar were arrested for allegedly flouting curfew orders. The police had, on Sunday, prevented BJP legislators Prakash Shendge and Madhu Chavan from entering Sangli. In Mumbai, police detained senior BJP leader Gopinath Munde at the airport before he could board a flight to Kolhapur. Mr Munde made the best of the opportunity by launching a sit-in at the airport. Surrounded by hundreds of BJP supporters, the agitation created a ruckus at the airport for quite some time. Mr Munde was later released. He then proceeded to Miraj by road. The incidence has come as a major embarrassment for the Congress-NCP government since the state home minister Jayant Patil, along with many veterans like RR Patil and Patangrao Kadam, come from Sangli. The failure of the government to contain the situation has left the government worried about the political fall-out ahead of the state assembly elections next month.

Contact: goaengineer...@aol.com Daijiworld Media Network - Doha (SP) Doha, Sep 9: The celebration of the feast of the birth of Our Lady has always been a uniting factor for the Konkani-speaking community in Doha-Qatar. Under the guidance of Fr Gaspar Fernandes, the spiritual caretaker of the Konkani community, and the leadership of the Holy Rosary Konkani Community Council having representatives from both Goa and Mangalore, the feast was celebrated at the church of Our Lady of the Rosary in Qatar. At 5.30 pm on Tuesday September 8, thousands of devotees gathered at the Church. The Holy mass in Konkani commenced with a candle light procession led by the Pirgintt, Alfred Sequeira and Murddom families of the feast. The main celebrant of the mass was Fr Andrew Leo D'Souza, vicar of St Joseph's Seminary, Mangalore, who was also the preacher during the feast novenas. Father Andrew, in his homily, preached the importance of having Mother Mary as our spiritual Mother and called upon each family to live the Christian values. The preaching during the nine days of the novena's along with the healing session, was very much liked and appreciated by the community, as Fr Andrew reflected the life of Mary and the importance of the word of God in the life of a Christian. Before the final prayers, Fr Peter P M, the newly appointed parish priest, conveyed his wishes to all those who had gathered for the celebration, which was followed by the vote of thanks by Ronnie Vaz. The newsletter of the Konkani Community, 'Ekvott', was released on the occasion by the parish priest. Eddie Sequeira, editor of the newsletter, was also present for the release. After the final blessings, a birthday cake was cut, as the crowd happily sang the birthday song in honour of Mother Mary. Children showered flowers and the new corn was distributed to all those present, along with cake and juice. As the celebration ended, everybody was found to be busy, wishing each other 'Bhagi Monthi Fest'. It was really a wonderful scene of brotherhood and sharing of common feelings.

Also irresponsible and false is the blanket claim that cancer is incurable. Here are the top 10 causes of death in India, all of which are curable and/or preventable: Ischemic heart disease - 15% of all deaths Lower respiratory infections - 11% of all deaths Cerebrovascular disease - 7% of all deaths Perinatal conditions - 7% of all deaths Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease - 5% of all deaths Diarrheal diseases - 4% of all deaths Tuberculosis - 4% of all deaths HIV/AIDS - 3% of all deaths Road traffic accidents - 2% of all deaths Self-inflicted injuries - 2% of all deaths The death rate from cancer is about 1.5% of all deaths. Antonio, The economic reports I read today take pains to point out that India and China had the biggest and most vibrant economies in the world from the time of Christ to around 200 years ago. With the economies of both these countries being reverted to the hands of native entrepreneurs, western economist have no doubt that both countries will regain their economic superiority this century. Some predict even within the next two decades. Sitting here in Canada, the other delight is to watch countries like the US, Germany and France print money and use it to prop up failed industries, all in the name of creating employment for their residents. This strategy of state sponsored employment is what led to the death of innovation and, ultimately, failed economies. The BRIC countries are already pushing for a monetary system that is not dependant on the whims of countries with failed monetary and banking systems. The BRIC countries know that when the US is forced to devalue its currency, it will effectively transfer the worlds wealth to itself as foreigners are now the main holders of US debt. Last week, the UN called for a new world reserve currency. We do live in interesting times. Mervyn1650Lobo __ Be smarter than spam. Contact: goaengineer...@aol.com When I hear certain Goanetters propose a government run health care system for the USA, then see report after report of horror stories coming out of countries with socialized medicine, it makes me wonder what these people's motives may be. It certainly cannot be goodwill towards the people of the USA. For example, Britain has had over 60 years to get it right, and failed to do so as the situation seems to be getting worse. The USA needs to find a way to help 15 million people who only have access to emergency medicine today, not screw up what the other 300 million have, which 85% say they are satisfied with. [Goanet] Latest update after Swiss Bank has agreed to disclose the funds.......

Contact: goaengineer...@aol.com On above subject I'm receiving following message through e-mail. On going through the message the first think that came to my mind is whether this is initiated by political party(ies)? If so which party? The next questions that came to my mind are: Irrespective of party who is after this campaign, is it legal or illegal money? Is it right to park such a massive fund in foreign bank(s)? Whether it's legal or illegal why benefit foreign banks by parking such a huge sum why not our national banks? Why should India government not try and get the details of account holders and equally try to get the money back to India? And so on... Can you all share your views on this issue? Received message on above subject is appended here below. Best regards, Dr. U. G. Barad Our Indians' Money - 70, 00,000 Crores Rupees In Swiss Bank 1) Yes, 70 lakhs crores rupees of India are lying in Switzerland banks. This is the highest amount lying outside any country, from amongst 180 countries of the world, as if India is the champion of Black Money. 2) Swiss Government has officially written to Indian Government that they are willing to inform the details of holders of 70 lakh crore rupees in their Banks, if Indian Government officially asks them. 3) On 22-5-08, this news has already been published in The Times of India and other Newspapers based on Swiss Government's official letter to Indian Government. 4) But the Indian Government has not sent any official enquiry to Switzerland for details of money which has been sent outside India between 1947 to 2008.. The opposition party is also equally not interested in doing so because most of the amount is owned by politicians and it is every Indian's money. 5) This money belongs to our country. From these funds we can repay 13 times of our country's foreign debt. The interest alone can take care of the Center's yearly budget. People need not pay any taxes and we can pay Rs. 1 lakh to each of 45 crore poor families. 6) Let us imagine, if Swiss Bank is holding Rs. 70 lakh Crores, then how much money is lying in other 69 Banks? How much they have deprived the Indian people? Just think, if the Account holder dies, the bank becomes the owner of the funds in his account. 7) Are these people totally ignorant about the philosophy of Karma? What will this ill-gotten wealth do to them and their families when they own/use such money, generated out of corruption and exploitation? 8) Indian people have read and have known about these facts. But the helpless people have neither time nor inclination to do anything in the matter. This is like a new freedom struggle and we will have to fight this. 9) This money is the result of our sweat and blood.. The wealth generated and earned after putting in lots of mental and physical efforts by Indian people must be brought back to our country. 10) As a service to our motherland and your contribution to this struggle, please circulate at least 10 copies of this note amongst your friends and relatives and convert it into a mass movement.

Contact: goaengineer...@aol.com Date: Wed, 9 Sep 2009 09:47:51 +0530 From: Antonio Menezes ac.mene...@gmail.com A very interesting ;point raised by Messrs. Mario Goveia and Vivian D'Souza. It would appear that sufficient attention has not been paid on essential conditions for a would be world power so far, by the powers that be in the Indian polity. Mario adds: Thanks for joining in this important topic, Antonio, which too many Indians take for granted or completely ignore. It is high time that India's opinion leaders turned their attention to quality of life issues including public cleanliness and civic order. Civic carelessness should be curbed by each Indian taking responsibility for their own actions and surroundings. Anyone from India who has travelled abroad would notice the difference immediately. People in countries with a higher quality of life treat each other and their public surroundings with much more respect than in countries with a lower quality of life. Believe me, there are countries that are as bad or worse than India when it comes to civic carelessness, but those are not the ones India needs to look to for inspiration. On Goanet, Rajan and Joe have done yeoman's work and posted pictures showing some of the blight that is taking place in what is probably the nation with the highest level of natural brain power in the world, but don't give a sh.., ...er, hoot, about anyone but themselves in public. Pretty amazing when you think about it. On the Indian streets there is no concept of right of way as we see it in every civilized country. From pedestrians to vehicles the most brazen rule the roost in India, and the devil take everyone else. Why can't each driver start by using turn signals and not cutting in front of cross traffic and others who clearly have the right of way, bringing them to a screeching halt. What the hell is THAT? You couldn't drive like that in any civilized country. No one who does not have their taxes deducted at the source pays their taxes honestly in India. Millions of small business people in India live lavish personal lives while showing tax losses and bribing any tax collectors who may catch up with them. This is devastating to a still-poor country that needs the revenue for economic development. Sad to say, but India is a nation of tax cheats and scofflaws. When I posted a speech made earlier this year in Hyderabad by Abdul Kalam asking Indians to improve their civic sense, which was widely circulated in India but not widely reported abroad, there were some on Goanet who took umbrage and insinuated that the speech was a fraud, which was a shocking response to this rare call to Indians by a respected national leader.

Why are these non-physicians posting information on serious issues like medicine and medical treatments from sources that promote medical information that has not been reviewed or tested by any respectable medical authority, that could lead to serious health problems for anyone who thinks this information is medically legitimate? For example, if anyone out there believes Fr. Ivo's blanket garbage that cancer is incurable and acts accordingly by delaying testing and treatment, their lives may be put in jeopardy. NONE of the alternative medical information that Con is posting has been tested by any credible authority. NO ONE should believe any of this information without checking with a legitimate physician - some of it may be harmless, some of it may be harmful for your health. No one really knows within any probability of effectiveness. Contact: goaengineer...@aol.com I wonder what Marlon has to say about this contretemps? I'm sure he'll think of something. But one of the world's top climate modellers, Mojib Latif, an author for the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change no less, the body that has been insisting that the world is going to hell in a handbasket, is totally confused by the climate and honest enough to admit it. But Mr. Latif is not giving up. He says the world MAY cool for years to come, but THEN it will get back to what his climate models, unproven and unprovable and speculative formulas that attempt to predict the long term future, have said all along MAY happen. Thus, according to his school of thought, BECAUSE OF WHAT THEY SAY MAY HAPPEN BUT HAS NOT BEEN HAPPENING SINCE 1998 LIKE THEY SAID IT WOULD, we must continue to turn all the western economies on their heads, while India, China, Russia, Brazil, Mexico and other less developed countries go their merry way, which I have called the growing smoking section in a world some would like to see as a non-smoking world, a.k.a. one in which we stop producing more greenhouse gases which they blame the climate on. THIS is what passes for akkal in some sophisticated circles. Tsk, tsk, tsk. http://www.newscientist.com/article/dn17742-worlds-climate-could-cool-first-warm-later.html?DCMP=OTC-rssnsref=online-news Excerpt: Forecasts of climate change are about to go seriously out of kilter. One of the world's top climate modellers said Thursday we could be about to enter one or even two decades during which temperatures cool. People will say this is global warming disappearing, he told more than 1500 of the world's top climate scientists gathering in Geneva at the UN's World Climate Conference. I am not one of the sceptics, insisted Mojib Latif of the Leibniz Institute of Marine Sciences at Kiel University, Germany. However, we have to ask the nasty questions ourselves or other people will do it. Few climate scientists go as far as Latif, an author for the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. But more and more agree that the short-term prognosis for climate change is much less certain than once thought. [end of excerpt]

Contact: goaengineer...@aol.com Nandkumar's shocking revelation that Goans cant enter a Goan restaurant http://www.navhindtimes.in/opinions/2735-discrimination-against-locals-i only brings the truth out. I dont know what kind of an MLA this Calangute MLA is. He better resign, if he cant cancel the licence of this restaurant. I am well capable of getting 1000 people from the state of Karnataka into Goa and enter this Indian restaurant. But before that, I would urge Goans in Goa to join with me. Also, I would request the Goa govt. to cancel the licence of this restaurant. Anyone has Nandkumar's contacts? samir

Contact: goaengineer...@aol.com RESPONSE: How appropriate, a hot tot Goykar, plying her trade in icy cold Iceland! Iceland had become a magnet for young Brits when the economy was on the swing, for several years. Those emigrants included many London born children of Goan immigrants to England. Britain gets the credit for their achievements, as well as their potential shortcomings. Sadly, they have now been caught up in the maelstorm that has left almost half the country without work, and hope. They share little of the blame for their predicament. Stranded far from home, and with few options, one can understand the use of the final one available to women since the beginning of time, if only to survive another day.eric.

Undir Malacca gelo...simply means...the rat has gone to Malacca Islands and returned in no way wiser. This is in reference to insignificant persons who brag about their wisdom, simply because they have visited foreign parts. Can anyone give some more variations on this same proverb... Contact: goaengineer...@aol.com BJP MLAs on holiday HERALD REPORTER PANJIM, SEPT 8 All the MLAs of the Opposition Bharatiya Janata Party are on a holiday abroad. While five MLAs led by Opposition Leader Manohar Parrikar are already in the United States of America on a three-week holiday, the remaining MLAs led by deputy leader in the assembly Francis DSouza left for Singapore today. After a long assembly session and the Ganesh festival we wanted to have some rest, one MLA who did not want to be named told Herald. Responding to a buzz over whether the trip was sponsored, he said the trip has been funded individually by the MLAs. A senior leader of the party also refuted a suggestion that the BJP might have footed the bill. The party doesn=E2=80=99t believe in such things (of sending members on holidays abroad), he added. The party was in power for just four and a half years till early 2005 and since then has been in the Opposition in the State. President of Goa unit of BJP Shripad Naik who is also the North Goa MP is not part of the holidaymakers. The Mapusa MLA-led group is quite big in number, sources in the party said. Besides the party MLAs, there are some officials and a few close friendsD, it is learnt. They are learnt to have gone on a packaged tour to the city state for a week. It is not known whether they will visit Malaysia or Hong Kong. Though there is no parallel, incidentally in mid-90s, under the chief ministership of Pratapsing Rane, a Goa delegation consisting of some ministers, MLAs and members of the Opposition MGP then =E2=80=93 including firebrand Dr Kashinath Jhalmi had visited Singapore on a study tour. After studying the police system there, Rane had changed the uniform of the Goa police (which was reverted to khaki by Parrikar-led government). Sources in the party said Parrikar who is also accompanied by his younger son left for the US August-end with four0 BJP legislators including Damu Naik (Fatorda), Milind Naik (Mormugao), Vijay Pai Khot (Canacona) and Mahadev Naik (Shiroda) and two office-bearers including the party's treasurer (and confidante of Parrikar) Sanjeev Desai. They left after the 5-day celebrations of Ganesh Chaturti, a source said. They are expected to return sometime on September 19-20, the source said. -- MODERATOR'S NOTE: Avoid crossposting when posting to Goanet.
