[Goanet-News] Goanet Reader: Goans in Pakistan, the small community which made a difference (Menin Rodrigues)

2009-09-10 Thread Goanet Reader
Goans in Pakistan, the small community which made a difference

GOANS in Karachi before and after Independence of Pakistan --
and their impact on lifestyle has run deep and long.

By Menin Rodrigues

If there was rhythm, colour and distinction associated to
lifestyle in the Pakistan of 1950s, 60s and 70s, it came in
part from the magnanimous contribution of the miniscule Goan
community of Karachi. This made a real difference, setting
precedents for today's gurus in music, sports and fashion.

These enterprising people from the tiny region of Goa, along
the west coast of South Asia and of pre-partition India, have
been living and working in Karachi, then a prospering fishing
village, since the mid-19th century.

Goans continue to live in Karachi today, about 5,000 odd, but
are relatively quiescent. Up to independence and a decade or
two later, this hard-working community played an influential
role in the city's growing prominence as a major seaport,
business hub and a stylish cosmopolitan metropolis -- a
sister-city to Bombay and a match to London's grandeur! The
many landmarks, now forlorn and almost forgotten, are
testimony of the city's eminence.

PREAMBLE: The magnificent sandstone-building of the
Karachi Goan Association (1886), requisitioned for
two years as a Senior Officers Club during World
War II and which also played host to the Duke of
Windsor then Prince of Wales and the First Governor
of the Province of Sind; the legendary portals of
St. Patrick's High School (1862) and St. Joseph's
Convent (1861) and the elite mansions, palatial
  houses, clubs, pubs, discotheques, gourmets,
bakeries, theatres, 'koors' and gymkhanas in
upscale Saddar; were the epicenters of all music,
cultural and sporting activities of Goan-life.

This is where Karachi's lifestyle originated. Remember the
'Club' scenes in early Pakistani movies -- the disoriented
'western' dances and clothing, the quintessential
saxophonist, trumpeter and drummer, the drinks and sexy
damsels?

From the historic hockey defeat inflicted on Bhopal Wanderers
(comprising of several players from India's gold-medal team
of the 1936 Berlin Olympics) by the mostly-Goan school-boys
team of St. Patrick, to the securing of Pakistan's railway
lines in 1947 by Frank D'Souza (Member, Indian Railways
Board) on the request of the Quaid-e-Azam; and from
Archbishop Joseph Cordeiro becoming Pakistan's first
Roman-Catholic Cardinal to the staging of Karachi's first
Gilbert and O'Sullivan musical operas in the 1950s; are just
a few milestones etched with Goan livery and legacy that will
remain part of Pakistan's and Karachi's untold history.

When on May 31, 1935 at 1.30 a.m., the great Quetta
  earthquake killed 75,000 people with one big jolt;
a Goan Manuel Mendes working on the Sukkur Barrage
Scheme was given charge of clearing the city of
debris and corpses with teams of over 400 sappers
and miners. He did it with dedication,
  determination and distinction.

The delicious ceremonious cake made on the occasion of
Karachi's first civic reception on August 25, 1947 in honor
of Quaid-e-Azam Mohamed Ali Jinnah, Governor-General of
Pakistan Dominion, was prepared and baked at the famed P.F.
Pereira Sons, Bakers Confectioners (Estb: 1922). The
other top Goan bakers of that time included the Misquita
(famous for its hot-cross buns, still in operation as its
brand name survives) and Lawrence bakery, respectively.

When Pakistan came into being in 1947, the prominence of
Goans was evident from the fact that one of Karachi's first
elected Mayors was Manuel Misquita; it was a time when the
city's judiciary (C.M. Lobo and brothers Edward and Herman
Raymond as Judges of the High Court), the armed forces (see
below), municipality, police (see below), customs
(Cincinnatus D'Abreo as Collector Customs), telegraphs,
hospitals, educational institutions, the port trust, railways
and the world of music, sports and fashion, were without an
iota of doubt, ruled by this highly educated, talented and
law-abiding community. In 1952, Noel Misquita became the
first Pakistani student at the Harvard Business School.

The Garden East in Karachi today was 'officially'
the old 'Cincinnatus Town' but unfortunately not
registered at the municipality. The roads and
streets of this amazingly green locality with
stately mansions with airy verandahs and sprawling
gardens are still known by the names of Goans who
built it e.g. Britto Road, D'Cruz Road, Pedro
D'Souza Road, D'Abreo Street, Edward Street.
etcetera. GRE today is a concrete jungle of
  apartment blocks.

Men who served the Pakistan armed forces with honour and
distinction were Colonel Eric Cardoza, Lt. Col. David
DeSouza, Major Joseph Lobo, Major Kenneth

At the beginning of the 1900s, one person out of 100 died of cancer;
today it is one out of three.
We foresee that within a few years one out of two people will die of
cancer.

The top 10 causes of death from the World Health Organization:

http://www.who.int/mediacentre/factsheets/fs310/en/index.html

Mario responds:

Once again, we see the absolute garbage on cancer that Fr. Ivo has been
posting.
***Mario is come back with his barrage of postings. The text is taken by me
from Dr.Tullio Simoncini's Website. I have already said that it has to be
investigated. The origin of cancer given by him may not be correct. What is
absolute garbage in my posting? Does Mario understand it?

We are also seeing a relentless barrage of unscientific and untested
alternative medical information from Con Menezes as Santosh has begun to
point out.
***What is wrong if the Website of Dr.Tullio Simoncini is brought to the
knowledge of the readers?

Why are these non-physicians posting information on serious issues like
medicine and medical treatments from sources that promote medical
information that has not been reviewed or tested by any respectable
medical authority, that could lead to serious health problems for anyone
who thinks this information is medically legitimate?
***Any one is free to judge from themselves. Let there be a discussion with
several people from the field. Why non-physicians cannot post information
about medicine for discussion?
For example, if anyone out there believes Fr. Ivo's blanket garbage that
cancer is incurable and acts accordingly by delaying testing and
treatment, their lives may be put in jeopardy.
***I did not advise such foolishness. Mario is such a fool to misunderstand
my clear statements. Once cancer is detected, it has to be immediatley
treated by cancer specialized hospitals. Have I advised anything different?
I even mentioned surgeons and physicians who would immediately send the
patients to Tata Memorial Hospital, even though they thought that it would
not be cured, totally and permanently. I have given examples of those who
were declared cured after surgery, chemotherapy and radiation by the
Hospital, but have died within one month. How do I put lives in jeopardy?
Nobody is going to delay testing, but being asymptomatic it may come to
knowledge at a late stage... Did I say that nothing should be done for
treatment of cancer, though most of the times it will be palliation and
prolongation of life? Is this not a serious hnecessary attempt? Why is Mario
misunderstanding and belittling the non-physicians?
NONE of the alternative medical information that Con is posting has been
tested by any credible authority. NO ONE should believe any of this
information without checking with a legitimate physician - some of it may
be harmless, some of it may be harmful for your health. No one really
knows within any probability of effectiveness.
***That is precisely what is being done. It is being tested on thousands of
cancer patients by Dr.Tullio Simoncini. How many legitimate physicians
have tested Dr.Simoncini's new method?
A PRIEST with no medical training cannot be allowed to spread such
falsehoods in a public forum without rebuttal by medical scientists like
Santosh and the other practicing physicians who are members of Goanet,
many of whom are strangely silent.
***Mario does not understand anything. I challenge any physician on this
point. Dr.Santosh is just quoting American statistics.
This is not happening here under our eyes. We do not need any medical
training for this statement. I have spoken to physicians and surgeons, who
do agree with me. A Priest without any medical training will be able to
confirm the fact of cancer patients with the experience of the people. With
my pastoral concern and medical training I am meeting cancer patients...who
have taken all medication from cancer hospitals, but are just eager to know
whether they are going to live for some time... I can only advise them: Be
not afraid. Mario Goveia in America is living (with cancer...) for some
years, so you also will be living in Goa... Let Mario not accuse me of
spreading falsehoods in a public forum...

Regards.
Fr.Ivo

I am not a physican but I am very much in touch with Goa and have assisted a
few Goans in their fight with Cancer in Mumbai.

I know Fr. Ivo lives in Goa and he knows whats happening in Goa...being a
priest he is more in
contact with the people in Goa who are suffering from Cancer and who cannot
afford the costly medicines...than
those Goans in American who can only lecture the Goans but cant be there
physically in Goa to advise the cancer patients.

Forget about advising the patients...do they know that the Goan doctors
themselves know about cancer cures or are they
able to detect cancer in the initial stages or their main aim to milk their
patients. If science has progressed so much

why do we have to take opinions from 2-3 doctors.

Tata Memorial Hospital in Mumbai informs us that Cancer can be cured if
detected in intial stages
but tell me how many doctors in Goa have been able to tell their patients or
their familes that its cancer in initial stages?

As I said in my earlier post on Cancer...I have been with two patients from
Goa who had come to Mumbai.
One had a letter addressed to Dr. in Bombay Hospital and the other Tata
Hospital...both came in healthy and didnt
know it was Cancer...even the family members were not aware. one survived
for 1 year and the other passed away
within a month...I was there with them and have seen what is going on..those
who have visited the tata hospital in Mumbai
n been with the cancer patients will know what it is...its so easy to simply
rely on cut and paste from websites.

I am not saying Cancer cant be cured.. surely the Americans may have a
cure...but for the poor in Goa it is like we say..
Mollbak dolle pautat, punn hat pavona...our eyes can reach the sky...but the
hands cant!

When I posted a speech made earlier this year in Hyderabad by Abdul Kalam
 asking
 Indians
to improve their civic sense, which was widely circulated in India but not
 widely
 reported abroad,
there were some on Goanet who took umbrage and insinuated that the speech was
 a
 fraud,
which was a shocking response to this rare call to Indians by a respected
 national
 leader.

RESPONSE:

#1) Please advise the date, time and location in Hyderabad where this speech
was
delivered.

#2) If this was a speech, why does the webpage of the link you provided state
A
Letter to Every Indian - APJ Abdul Kalam [1]

#3) Surely you know the difference between a letter and a speech.

#4) Suggestion: Please follow Santosh's advice and check your weblinks at the
Quackometer website: http://www.quackometer.net before forwarding them to
Goanet.

#5) On Aug 27/09 you stated:

*** This Letter to every Indian by Abdul Kalam MUST be a hoax. I mean, think
about it. Why would any Indian leader point out the abysmal lack of civic
sense
among Indians? *** [2]

You are making contradictory statements. You also alleged the same hoax speech
was
posted by a Goanetter, Radhakrishnan nair, on Facebook. This was proven to be
false. You are yet to withdraw your false allegations.

Say NO to plagiarism !!

Dear Sir,

I followed with keen interest the Editor’s email exchanges with
Sayeesh Naik (GT 8 Sep) with reference to the Editorial appearing on
21st August. I must add that I too have found this Editorial on Dr
Subodh Kerkar’s Art a little hard to digest.

In this context, I recount the speech of the great American President
John F. Kennedy, made at the Amherst College in Massachusetts in honor
of poet Robert Frost. The former President made a fitting case for a
nation to represent itself not only through its strength but also
through its art by observing and I quote If art is to nourish the
roots of our culture, society must set the artist free to follow his
vision wherever it takes him.

History will illustrate that Countries have progressed whenever human
thought and the creative process has been given a free reign to flower
and prosper. If the limits of human thought are to be clipped in the
name of religion, then we will see no Galileo. By seeking to adopt a
cautious approach, the Editorial seriously misses the plot and tries
to give a kind of legitimacy to the politics of threat and
intimidation.

It is extremely sad and disappointing to note that the ugly genie of
“religious intolerance” keeps popping out of lamp time and again and
Artists are being subjected to the worst campaign of politically
motivated censorship in years. This is despite the fact that our
Constitution under Constitution Article 19(1) (a) guarantees every
citizen the fundamental rights of freedom of speech and expression and
the highest Courts of our land have consistently defined the limits of
these Freedoms and ruled in favour of the Artists.

One such legal precedent was set way back in 1954 when various charges
were filed against Artist Akbar Padamsee for his erotic works of Art.
The Artist was arrested on charges of obscenity and cases filed in the
Courts of law. The matter was finally disposed in the Honorable High
Court which, in its landmark Judgment, held that since art exhibitions
are meant for those who voluntarily step into the gallery to view
them, they do not constitute a violation of obscenity under the IPC.
The Court categorically observed that viewers enter such exhibitions
at their own discretion, and can hence choose not to enter if they
feel they may be offended by the exhibits on display.

Creative forms of expressions like Art, Films, Books, etc cannot be
banned simply because hyper-sensitive groups find the same offensive.
If this were to happen, we would move back into the dark ages.
Furthermore, the spiritual tenets of Hinduism have always celebrated
diversity and Dr Kerkar’s Art is consistent with such traditions which
see its Gods and Goddesses in various forms, postures and figures -
both clad as well as unclad.

Just as beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder so does obscenity. An
Artist’s work is an exercise in creativity and should be viewed with
an open mind. Those whose sentiments are offended at the drop of a
hat can choose to stay away from Art galleries.

Let’s not allow our Society to be transformed into an intolerant
society. The principles of liberalism and tolerance must prevail!

MONTHI  FESTH

The Traditional celebration of Nativity of Mother Mary combined with
new harvest is truly an international Festival of Mangalorean
Catholics.

The Devotion:

In coastal Canara region, the nativity feast is preceded by 9 day
Novena to Mother Mary.  Children collect variety of flowers and gather
around the grotto during Novena, concluded by the hymn ”Sakkad
sangatha mellyam’ and then offer the flowers they have brought on the
statue of Mother Mary, to the tune of the hymn  ‘Moriyek hogollsiyam’.

The devotion of Mother Mary is a legacy, our ancestors brought with
them when they fled Goa as it is mentioned in one of the Gumtam songs,
in honour of ‘Ruzai Saibinn’ which says : Goiam sodun aili Mai, Ruzai
Saibinn, Mekllya  Kesani Mai, devnli somdirak, Devnli Mai sondirak,
aili Manglurak, Aili Mai Manglurak, Geli Bollarak, Bollar vadyaanth
Mayen thiso tharo kela, Devache vhodde dayen, Asro Amkam dila, Dhaa
zonn, bhav-bandhov, ottu melloyam, Ruzai mayeche navim, thempl
bhandoyam..  (It appears from this song, they sailed with the statue
of ‘Ruzai Saibinn’ when they fled Goa, landed in Mangalore, then in
Bolar, Mangalore, erected a church in her honour (The Church of the
most Holy Rosary- Rosario Cathedral)

The Cathedral now stands in the same place where the Portuguese built
their first church after capturing Mangalore on 5th January 1568. The
venerable Fr. Joseph Vas played an important role in the history of
the Rosario Church in the year 1681. Archbishop Brandao of Goa
assigned him to repair the existing Bolar Rosario Church, which was
known as the Factory Church. On the fateful night of Ash Wednesday
February 21st 1784 upon Tippu’s cruel orders several thousands of
Kanara Christians were lead as captives to Srirangapatnam. During this
period Tippu's forces desecrated and destroyed 26 out of the 27
churches in Kanara and Rosario Church was one of them.  After return
from the captivity, in 1813 the help of various sources rebuilt
Rosario church. The British Government contributed Rs.4,000/- towards
the building of Rosario Church and Milagres Church in the same place
as they formerly stood before1784. The new Milagres Church was built
in the year 1811 and the Rosario Church in the year 1813. The Rosario
Church was raised to the rank of a Cathedral on 16th April 1850).

The custom of Monthi Fest was initiated by Goa Priest, Msgr. Joachim
Miranda who was then parish priest of ‘Monthe Mariano’ convent church
at Farangipet, after his return from deportation to Malabar during
Tipu Sultan’s captivity of Canara Catholics few of whom returned home
after the defeat of Tipu in the 4th Mysore war in 1799.

Novem:

On the Feast day, the new paddy (KHANSHI) that is ready for harvest is
blessed at each church and distributed to the congregation.  An
elaborate all vegetarian dinner is prepared with traditional dishes
such as ‘allum-dhento, tovshya karamb, sanna roce, pathrade, varieties
of vegetables like ‘alsande, bhende, kuvalo, mogem, vaingem, gullam,
thendlim, ghosalim, podvalem, thamdi bhaji, surnn, sonno’ etc.  The
new paddy is either added to the ‘vorn’ or powdered and added to the
milk and ceremoniously sipped by each member of the family at lunch.
Traditionally, lunch is served on the plantain leave and eaten by
hand.  The new paddy is sent by post to family members, dear ones who
are working or living away, abroad, and they too celebrate the
festival upon receipt of the new paddy.

The children are rewarded for the trouble they have taken in gathering
flowers to honour the birth of Mother Mary on the day of the feast
with sweetmeats like laddoos, or sugarcane to take home and enjoy.
Some parishes conduct sports, games for entire families in the
afternoon highlighted by ‘tug-o-war’ for men as well as women!.

One fine evening an old man (Lazarus) was sitting on a bench in the Margao
Municipal Garden. One young man (Leandro) who was passing by, comes to Lazarus
and says:

Leandro: Sir, may I know the time, please?

Lazarus: Certainly not.

Leandro: Sir, but why? What are you going to lose,if you tell me the time?

Lazarus: Yes, I may lose something if I tell you the time.

Leandro: But Sir, can you tell me how?

Lazarus: See, if I tell you the time, you will definitely thank me and may be
tomorrow again you will ask me the time.

Leandro: Well. may be!

Lazarus: We may meet two three times more and you will ask my name and address.

Leandro: Quite possible.

Lazarus: One day you may come to my house saying you were just passing by and
came into wish me. Then as a courtesy, I will offer you a cup of tea. After my
courteous approach you will try to come again. This time you will appreciate
tea and ask who has made it.?

Leandro: Yeah, naturally.

Lazarus: Then I will tell you that my daughter has and I will then have to
introduce my young and pretty daughter to you and you will admire my daughter.

Leandro: (Smiles. ;)

Lazarus: Now onwards you will try to meet my daughter again and again. You will
offer her to go out for a movie together and a date with you.

Leandro: (Smiles) May be.

Lazarus: My daughter may start liking you and start waiting for you. After
meeting regularly you will fall in love with her and propose her for marriage.

Leandro: (Smiles)

Lazarus: One day both of you will come to me and tell me about your love and
ask for my permission.

Leandro: (Shyly) Oh Yes!

Lazarus: (Angrily) Young man, I will never marry my daughter to a person like
you who does not even own a watch.

Dear Maurice Mam,

You mentioned that Fr. Joachim Miranda (author of famous song: Riglo
Jezu Mollyant) started the Monti fest tradition. But this may not be
true.

The MONTI FEST tradition was started in Goa itself. But the present
Goans do not celebrate Monti Fest because all the traditions of our
ancestors were banned there. Even Konkani speaking was banned for few
years. This is one of the main reason for our people to fled from Goa
to Mangalore. This is very clear because the people living in southern
parts of Maharashtra like Kudal, Savantvadi, Ratnagiri etc also
celebrate Monti Fest like we Mangaloreans do. It may be possible that
Fr. Joachim Miranda popularised Monti Fest in Mangalore.

You have also mentioned that only one church was not destroyed by the
Tippu Soldiers. This is MONTE MARIANO Church of Faragipet. The reason
for not destroying the church according to Late V J P Saldanha (who
wrote volumes of historical novels in Konkani on the migration of
Chrsitans from Goa to Mangalore and also wrote volumes of Historical
novels in Konkani about the Tippus Captivity of Canara Catholics) is
that the youngsters of Farangipet or Omzoor were 'DINDE MANAY' and the
Tippu's soldiers feared to touch them. 'DINDE MANAY' is also mentioned
in another Gumttam Song Sairik Yetha Mujha Duvek which can be heard
from http://konkanimusic.blogspot.com/

Thanks a lot for the beautiful article

Besides tiatr, he was very popular with the Goan folk Songs.

Once, at Margao, near Rajendra Prasad Stadium, where all tiatr used to stage at
night 10.30pm, the tiatr gatekeepers were refusing to let a young child of say

I am not a physician but I am very much in touch with Goa and have
assisted a few Goans in their fight with Cancer in Mumbai.
***You do not have to be a physician to speak about cancer. It is our
experience with cancer patients that counts. Common sense tells us a lot.
You know from your contact with the patients in Tata Memorial Hospital. I
know from my close contact with them, even at death bed... I have anointed
Dr.Carlos Barreto, who died of lung cancer... I know about cancer patients
whom I meet everyday. Even today I met a lady who is suffering from breast
cancer and has been operated. What is the survival period? Who can guarantee
it on the basis of American statistics? One of my students died of cancer
within less than one month after surgery, chemotherapy and radiation, after
he was declared as cured by Tata Memorial Hospital.

I know Fr. Ivo lives in Goa and he knows whats happening in Goa...Being a
priest he is more in
contact with the people in Goa who are suffering from Cancer and who
cannot afford the costly medicines. Then those Goans in America who can
only lecture the Goans but can't be there physically in Goa to advise the
cancer patients.
***It is not only poor cancer patients, but rich people, who have spent
lakhs of rupees with medication and surgery, have died within a short time.
Let the Goan physicians and scientists in diaspora leave their cosy place
and come down to cure the cancer patients and help the Dalits of India...
Forget about advising the patients...Do they know that the Goan doctors
themselves know about cancer cures or are they
able to detect cancer in the initial stages or their main aim to milk
their patients? If science has progressed so much,

why do we have to take opinions from 2-3 doctors?
***Usually when the cancer patient feels the symptoms and goes for tests, it
is alread metastasized... The lady felt about her breast cancer and went to
the surgeon who told her that it was in the third stage and operated on her.
It is late.
Tata Memorial Hospital in Mumbai informs us that Cancer can be cured if
detected in intial stages
but tell me: how many doctors in Goa have been able to tell their patients
or their families that its cancer in initial stages?

...I have been with two patients from Goa who had come to Mumbai.
One had a letter addressed to Dr. in Bombay Hospital and the other Tata
Hospital...Both came in healthy and didn't
know it was Cancer...even the family members were not aware. One survived
for 1 year and the other passed away
within a month...I was there with them and have seen what is going on.
Those, who have visited the Tata Hospital in Mumbai
and have been with the cancer patients, will know what it is...It's so
easy to simply rely on cut and paste from websites.
***Actually, I am trying to help them for palliation with my medical
knowledge and training.

From: Mario Goveia mgov...@sbcglobal.net
I wonder what Marlon has to say about this contretemps? I'm sure he'll think
of something. But one of the world's top climate modellers, Mojib Latif,
an author for the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change no less, the
body that has been insisting that the world is going to hell in a
handbasket, is totally confused by the climate and honest enough to admit
it.

But Mr. Latif is not giving up. He says the world MAY cool for years to
come, but THEN it will get back to what his climate models, unproven and
unprovable and speculative formulas that attempt to predict the long term
future, have said all along MAY happen.

Thus, according to his school of thought, BECAUSE OF WHAT THEY SAY MAY
HAPPEN BUT HAS NOT BEEN HAPPENING SINCE 1998 LIKE THEY SAID IT WOULD, we
must continue to turn all the western economies on their heads, while India,
China, Russia, Brazil, Mexico and other less developed countries go their
merry way, which I have called the growing smoking section in a world some
would like to see as a non-smoking world, a.k.a. one in which we stop
producing more greenhouse gases which they blame the climate on.

THIS is what passes for akkal in some sophisticated circles.

Tsk, tsk, tsk.

http://www.newscientist.com/article/dn17742-worlds-climate-could-cool-first-warm-later.html?DCMP=OTC-rssnsref=online-news

Excerpt:

Forecasts of climate change are about to go seriously out of kilter. One of
the world's top climate modellers said Thursday we could be about to enter
one or even two decades during which temperatures cool.

People will say this is global warming disappearing, he told more than
1500 of the world's top climate scientists gathering in Geneva at the UN's
World Climate Conference.

I am not one of the sceptics, insisted Mojib Latif of the Leibniz
Institute of Marine Sciences at Kiel University, Germany. However, we have
to ask the nasty questions ourselves or other people will do it.

Few climate scientists go as far as Latif, an author for the
Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. But more and more agree that the
short-term prognosis for climate change is much less certain than once
thought.

***I am glad that scientists are grappling with the problem of uncertainty
in scientific matters. The Principle of Uncertainty by Werner Heisenberg in
Quantum Physics is well known. What happens in metereology is also happening
in medical world: Physicians and surgeons are being confused by cancer
epidemiology and Swine Flu (H1N1). It is interesting to read from scientific
circles that in 350 BCE, Aristotle wrote Meteorology (Meteorologica).
Aristotle is considered to be the founder of meteorology. For 2,000 years,
no one added anything significant to his findings (Farrand, 1991;
Meteorology, Lisa Alter). One of the most impressive achievements described
in the Meteorology is the description of what is now known as the hydrologic
cycle. If Mario can speak of meteorology, why I cannot speak of medicine
and Benedict XVI of ethics in economics and politics?

Would it be correct to call traditional wine-making a dying art in
Goa? This quote is from http://www.sallyintercon.co.uk/Goa-index.htm
Not sure if it's a quote from somewhere (though the language sounds
familiar) or from the writing of Nandkumar Kamat. If you know of any
useful links to wine-making in Goa, do please let me know:

OPENQUOTE

WINE MAKING IN GOA
Traditional wine-making is a dying art in Goa. It was an ancient craft
in Mespotamia. It looks like bread and wine making were the
forerunners of modern biotechnology. The Portuguese introduced the
fine Hispano-French art of making wine to Goa. Local wine-makers
improved their recipes and techniques. The 'vice-chancellor' of Goa's
'university of home-made wine-making' Edwin (affectionately called
Eddy) Saldanha, is a reservoir of knowledge. From scouting,
horticulture, mushroom cultivation to taxidermy and wine making, Eddy
the wine maker spellbinds you with his rich practical experience.

Alex's works are of a wide variety when one goes thru them, a range of
different styles, themes, n effects, his favourite being the christian

theme in india but in the west..
At the international exhibition in vienna Alex Rodrigues exhibited nine of
his completely detailed finger painted works,
He also introduced to the exhibition a very unique form of art, NAIL
ART, Alex actually can etch or emboss, landscapes and almost anything on a
piece of paper, just with his finger nails, a very unique talent not common
to the western world, needless to say it was a hit.. he is still lookin to
introduce it strongly into the western world..

My dear Goankars,

As I keep telling you'll, my mother is a Cancer survivor for the last 26 years
and has been living in Goa for the last 10 years. She was operated upon for
Cancer of the Uterus by Dr. Lusito in Mumbai.

My dad worked for a multinational co. that paid the hospital bill, medication
and all treatment for my mum. After Dad retired, my brothers have been paying
for mum's treatment.

Mum still visits Tata hospital till date, for her annual Cancer check-ups, and
her daily diet includes lots of vitamins, fresh vegetables and fruits, grown in
her own garden, lots of liquids e.g. milk and tea brewed with lemon grass
leaves (also home-grown)etc. and lives in the beautiful clean and green Goa.

Always eat freshly cooked food daily.

My mother has always been slim and thin, and only 45kgs in weight throughout
her life, till date, although she eats butter, cheeze, eggs etc. and loves
eating food, cooked in oil.

My mother has never been able to get along with house maids (she would always
find fault with their work)and hence, has always used all the latest gadgets
for her housework and cooking.

She does her own shopping and marketing.

Please get yourselves checked annually, for cancer after the age of 30yrs.

The moment your Cancer surgeon confirms, you have cancer, get operated within
48hrs. Get chemotherapy/radiation etc. done immediately. Never waste time.

If you are a Christian, approach the Church, of which you are a parishioner and
they will immediately, help you with funds for the cancer/or any other
operation, provided you furnish the parish priest/pastor the necessary
documents to support your claim.

I remember an actor in a Merchant-Ivory movie, who said Death is like going to
the toilet, when you have to go, you go.

Eddie Verdes,
The earlier one detects cancer, the better the chances are of being cured.

Here in Canada, the govt focuses on the early detection of every disease.
Residents are provided with a free annual medical check up. This keeps
medical cost low as when cancer is detected in its later stages, the
cost of treatment goes up a hundred fold and chances of survival plummet
drastically.

I urge those in countries which have early detection systems to go for
an annual medical check up. This is regardless of if the service is free or
if there is a monetary cost associated with it.

The alternative, is early death.

I am a Goan. I completed by early medical education in Goa. I am in constant
touch with cancer specialists in Goa. I am saying that all common cancers can
be cured in Goa through early detection and proper treatment by a highly
competent oncologist. The medicines and procedures that are available in the
developed world are also available in Goa.

If anecdotes is all you care about then I can tell you that my own grandmother
was cured from breast cancer in the early 1970s in Goa and in the Tata Memorial
Cancer Centre in Mumbai. She lived much beyond the life expectancy of a normal
Indian woman without recurrence of her cancer.

This is a fairy tale unworthy of even a cheap Bollywood movie. No
scientifically trained physician gives such a declaration, and claims that a
patient died of cancer without knowing the details of the case and the exact
cause of death, which can only be definitively determined by a pathological
autopsy. Common sense tells us that a patient who survived cancer can die of
other causes, such as a heart attack.

***Actually, I am trying to help them for palliation with

Cancer can only be competently diagnosed and treated today in India by an
expert surgical or medical oncologist who has done the following:

1. Completed a five and a half year degree course in modern medicine in a
recognized medical college, including a rotating internship of one year.

2. Obtained a modern medical degree and a licence to practice modern scientific
medicine.

3. Completed a recognized residency in a medical or surgical specialty.

3. Obtained a postgraduate degree in that specialty.

4. Specialized in cancer surgery or medical oncology through further residency
or fellowship training.

5. Maintained an active practice of oncology.

6. Kept up with the latest advances in cancer diagnosis and treatment through
medical journals, continuing medical education and refresher courses.

Please do not entrust your life in the hands of a person who does not have the
above qualifications and training.

Even quacks, it would seem, are in distinguished company! FN

Notable historical persons accused of quackery

* Thomas Allinson (1858–1918), founder of naturopathy. His views
often brought him into conflict with the Royal College of Physicians
of Edinburgh and the General Medical Council, particularly his
opposition to doctors' frequent use of toxic drugs, his opposition to
vaccination and his self promotion in the press.[20] His views and
publication of them led to him being labeled a quack and being struck
off by the General Medical Council for infamous conduct in a
professional respect.[21][22]

* Samuel Hahnemann (1755–1843), founder of homeopathy. Hahnemann
believed that all diseases were caused by miasms, which he defined
as irregularities in the patient's vital force.[23] He also said that
illnesses could be treated by substances that in a healthy person
produced similar symptoms to the illness, in extremely low
concentrations, with the therapeutic effect increasing with dilution
and repeated shaking.[24][25][26]

* L. Ron Hubbard (1911–1986) was the founder of the Church of
Scientology. He was an American science fiction writer, former United
States Navy officer, and creator of Dianetics.[27][28][29]

* John Harvey Kellogg (1852–1943) was a medical doctor in Battle
Creek, Michigan, USA who ran a sanitarium using holistic methods, with
a particular focus on nutrition, enemas and exercise. Kellogg was an
advocate of vegetarianism, and is best known for the invention of the
corn flake breakfast cereal with his brother, Will Keith Kellogg.[30]

* Louis Pasteur (1822–1895) was a French chemist best known for
his remarkable breakthroughs in microbiology. His experiments
confirmed the germ theory of disease, also reducing mortality from
puerperal fever (childbed), and he created the first vaccine for
rabies. He is best known to the general public for showing how to stop
milk and wine from going sour - this process came to be called
pasteurization. His hypotheses initially met with much hostility, and
he was accused of quackery on multiple occasions. However, he is now
regarded as one of the three main founders of microbiology, together
with Ferdinand Cohn and Robert Koch.[31]

* Lovisa Årberg (1803–1866), the first Swedish female doctor.
Årberg was met with strong resistance from male doctors and was
accused of quackery. During the formal examination she was acquitted
of all charges and allowed to practice medicine in Stockholm even
though it was forbidden for women in the 1820s. She later received a
medal for her work.[citation needed]

* Linus Pauling (1901–1994), a Nobel Prize winner in chemistry,
Pauling spent much of his later career arguing for the treatment of
somatic and psychological diseases with orthomolecular medicine. One
of his most famous claims was that the common cold could be cured with
massive doses of vitamin C. These claims were initially met with much
enthusiasm, especially amongst the general public, though subsequent
double-blind studies indicated no effect beyond that of a placebo.[32]

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quackery#Notable_historical_persons_accused_of_quackery

Quackery is a derogatory term used to describe unproven or fraudulent
medical practices. Random House Dictionary describes a quack as a
fraudulent or ignorant pretender to medical skill or a person who
pretends, professionally or publicly, to have skill, knowledge, or
qualifications he or she does not possess; a charlatan.[1]

The word quack derives from the archaic word quacksalver, of Dutch
origin (spelled kwakzalver in contemporary Dutch), meaning boaster
who applies a salve.[2] In the Middle Ages the word quack meant
shouting. The quacksalvers sold their wares on the market shouting
in a loud voice.[3]

Health fraud is often used as a synonym for quackery, but this use
can be problematic, since quackery can exist without fraud, a word
which implies deliberate deception.

When on May 31, 1935 at 1.30 a.m., the great Quetta
  earthquake killed 75,000 people with one big jolt;
a Goan Manuel Mendes working on the Sukkur Barrage
Scheme was given charge of clearing the city of
debris and corpses with teams of over 400 sappers
and miners. He did it with dedication,

The delicious ceremonious cake made on the occasion of
Karachi's first civic reception on August 25, 1947 in honor
of Quaid-e-Azam Mohamed Ali Jinnah, Governor-General of
Pakistan Dominion, was prepared and baked at the famed P.F.

When Pakistan came into being in 1947, the prominence of
Goans was evident from the fact that one of Karachi's first

If you have copyrighted something and I have used it for my gains, you can

I have not said anything derogatory about Goa either.
I am amused at your statement made a lot of negative statements about Goa.
I have been on Goanet for over a decade, and am not afraid to speak my mind.

Also, if you did not get it, I had tried to say that Goans go all over the

Jinnah - Learning from the Past

Views on Jaswant Singh's book Jinnah: India-Partition Independence appears to
miss the lessons from the past. As I read the fight for Indian independence,
the 64-dollar question is whether some aspects of the struggle should have been
done differently? And what can we learn from those mistakes?

Some political leaders of both Hindu and Muslim community, in an attempt to
emotionally charge the uneducated masses, wrapped their freedom message with
a religious flag (since there was no Indian flag). That religious-nationalistic
fervor soon crept into secular leaders, at the local and national levels. There
was little effort to encourage the various subgroups in communities to interact
with and accommodate each other. Thus there was no local or national
power-sharing, leading to the unraveling of the Lucknow Pact; which was the
climax of Hindu-Muslim-Sikh unity.

We see the same scenario of communal disharmony unfolding today in India. Local
ethnic discord is fanned by national religious and political leaders. A society
that does not learn from its history will repeat the same mistakes.

Following all the horror stories that we have heard recently about socialized
health care systems, it looks like the American public has imposed common sense
on their representatives in Congress and the result should be a far better
health care system which will cover those who need help without destroying the
efficiency and vitality of the existing system for everyone else.

***It is good that we are giving chances to all medical systems. Let the
people try for themselves and see what benefit they get. I favour integrated
approach to medical systems. If 'allopathic drugs' can be tried on patients,
why homeopathic and ayurvedic drugs cannot be used for the benefit of the
patients? Our physicians are prescribing ayurvedic drugs for the patients
with success. It is more difficult to prescribe homeopathic drugs without
studying. But today there are patent drugs which can be used if you have
some knowledge. Some 'allopathic' physicians are taking themselves
homeopathic drugs for their 'incurable' diseases... Let the scientific

Yes, Dr.Gilbert. It is a delicate issue that of health care. We in Goa
are complaining that it is so costly to be in the hospital for a few

costly. It is costly to become sick.

Something you may not encounter in Goa.

gave her his name.

In a very loud voice, the receptionist said,
YES, I HAVE YOUR NAME HERE.

All the patients in the waiting room snapped their heads around to look at

Once again, we see the absolute garbage on cancer that Fr. Ivo has been
posting.
***Mario is come back with his barrage of postings. The text is taken by
me from Dr.Tullio Simoncini's Website. I have already said that it has to
be investigated. The origin of cancer given by him may not be correct.
What is absolute garbage in my posting? Does Mario understand it?

We are also seeing a relentless barrage of unscientific and untested
alternative medical information from Con Menezes as Santosh has begun
to point out.

***Any one is free to judge for themselves. Let there be a discussion with
several people from the field. Why non-physicians cannot post
information about medicine for discussion?
For example, if anyone out there believes Fr. Ivo's blanket garbage that
cancer is incurable and acts accordingly by delaying testing and
treatment, their lives may be put in jeopardy.
***I did not advise such foolishness. Mario is such a fool to
misunderstand my clear statements. Once cancer is detected, it has to be
immediately treated by cancer specialized hospitals. Have I advised
anything different?
I even mentioned surgeons and physicians who would immediately send the
patients to Tata Memorial Hospital, even though they thought that it would
not be cured, totally and permanently (let the people have the consolation
of having done everything for the patient...). I have given examples of
those who were declared cured after surgery, chemotherapy and radiation by
the
Hospital, but have died within one month... How do I put lives in
jeopardy?
Nobody is going to delay testing, but being asymptomatic it may come to
knowledge at a late stage... Did I say that nothing should be done for
treatment of cancer, though most of the times it will be palliation and
prolongation of life? Is this not a serious necessary attempt? Why is Mario
misunderstanding and belittling the non-physicians?
NONE of the alternative medical information that Con is posting has
been tested by any credible authority. NO ONE should believe any of this
information without checking with a legitimate physician - some of it may
be harmless, some of it may be harmful for your health. No one really
knows within any probability of effectiveness.
***That is precisely what is being done. It is being tested on thousands
of cancer patients by Dr.Tullio Simoncini. How many legitimate
physicians

have tested Dr.Simoncini's new method?
A PRIEST with no medical training cannot be allowed to spread such
falsehoods in a public forum without rebuttal by medical scientists like
Santosh and the other practicing physicians who are members of Goanet,

many of whom are strangely silent.
***Mario does not understand anything. I challenge any physician on this
point. Dr.Santosh is just quoting American statistics.
This is not happening here under our eyes. We do not need any medical
training for this statement. I have spoken to physicians and surgeons, who
do agree with me totally. A Priest without any medical training will be able
to confirm the fact of cancer patients with the experience of the people.
With my pastoral concern and medical training I am meeting cancer
patients...who
have taken all medication from cancer hospitals, but are just eager to know
whether they are going to live for some time... I can only advise them: Be
not afraid. Mario Goveia in America is living (with cancer...) for some
years, so you also will be living in Goa... Let Mario not accuse me of
spreading falsehoods in a public forum...

'We don't have to be in Goa to improve it'
Says Herman Carneiro who plans to include online medical expertise on his
flagship Goan website

CORDELIA WOLFRAM
Times News Network

The Goan diaspora is spread far and wide. Yet distance has
failed to deter them from contributing to improving the lives
of Goans.

For many of them, connecting to their homeland means at best,
annual visits. If not, it involves socialising at Goan clubs
or keeping abreast of information via the super highway -
Internet.

One of the oldest and largest Goan websites, which today
brags of 12,000 subscribers and several more online hits, was
started by a young and dynamic doctor-in-the-making, Herman
Carneiro.

Although born and brought up in Kenya and the US, Herman
believes you can make a difference at home from anywhere. He
says, We don't all have to be in Goa to love it and to work
to improve it. We can work in our local Goan communities to
help out as well.

Herman has just graduated from medical school. He has a
masters in epidemiology with a focus in infectious disease
control. Right now, he's in a training programme in London.

Combining medicine with the website he started on his 18th
birthday, he has launched an online network of Goan doctors
and health professionals. Via e-mail, he talks about this
exciting project and about being a Goan abroad reaching out
to Goans at home.

Q: What motivated you to start a network of Goans?

From a very young age, the value of having a close-knit
community and supporting one another was instilled in me. I
missed that sense of belonging when I moved to Boston, USA
for university, where there were few Goans.

Here I was introduced to the Internet. Interaction was
limited and there weren't any online Goan groups. Once I had
enough people, I thought it would be nice to start the first
Goan network online, to create a close-knit community like I
had in Kenya, only on a global scale.

Q: How does the website connect Goans across the globe?

Members discuss issues, both historical and current, that
affect Goa and Goans around the world. We try to promote the
language, Konkani, but I think we can do a better job of
that.

The website functions as a non-profit organisation as well as
running community-building projects in Goa. We promote local
businesses by giving them free advertising at times.

Our latest creation is an online network of Goan doctors and
health professionals. Through this network, we can share
research happening in Goa or that which has an impact on the
health of Goans.

We share our collective expertise in improving the health of
Goans or healthcare in Goa. This acts as a notification
network in the event of outbreaks of disease. I'd like more
health professionals to join this network.

Q: Would you think of returning to Goa?

I feel like moving to Goa one day. But... I have so much more
to accomplish before that. I will definitely contribute to
Goa though.

I hope the network of health professionals takes off. There's
a lot of potential in that network to contribute in Goa in so
many ways, be it free clinicals or channelling our expertise
to improve health and healthcare in Goa.

Q: As a young Goan living abroad, why did you feel compelled
to connect with Goa?

I think that when people in Goa think of us being born and
brought up outside Goa, they assume we've lost our heritage.
It's true in a lot of cases.

Many of the young Goans today have lost their heritage and
don't care to find their roots. They are integrated into
their home communities and Goa is nothing other than a
tourist destination for them.

It's understandable. However, this is not true with all. I
may not have lived in Goa, but I am very much Goan. I feel a
sense of pride, duty and belonging to Goa and Goans.

[Goanet] Leander Paes / Cara Black lose US Open mixed doubles title

Gullickson, Parrott pull off another upset to win mixed doubles title
By Ravi Ubha
Thursday, September 10, 2009

Maybe it was destiny.

The inexperienced U.S. duo of Carly Gullickson and Travis Parrott eased past
heavy
favorites - and defending champions - Cara Black and Leander Paes 6-2, 6-4 to
claim
a maiden Grand Slam mixed doubles title. In fact, it was their first major
title of
any kind.

I still can't believe we actually won the US Open, Gullickson said in her
post-match press conference. It's weird to me.

This after Gullickson and Parrott, wild cards who possessed a modest five
doubles
titles between them, saved two match points in their opener against Nadia
Petrova
and Max Mirnyi. Growing in confidence, they didn't lose another set and knocked
off
three more seeds, including No. 1s Liezel Huber and Mahesh Bhupathi in the
semifinals.

At least India's Paes and Zimbabwe's Black, winners of a combined 91 doubles
titles,
still have something to play for. Paes and Czech partner Lukas Dlouhy meet
Bhupathi
and Mark Knowles in the men's doubles finale, while Black, top ranked in
doubles for
a while, and Huber remain in the women's event.

When you've won an event before, you always give yourselves a good chance,
Paes
said in a courtside interview. But I think our opponents were too good for us.

Paes and Black knew they were in for a tough time from the outset. They saved
three
break points in the opening game, with Paes, 36 but still armed with quick
reflexes,
surprisingly staying back.

Paes, who lived in New York for more than three years, saved one match point
with a
wonderful backhand from outside the tram lines, and following a break, held
comfortably to cut the deficit to 5-4.

You can bet they'll team up again.

Speaking of brotherhood and sharing of common feelings, it brings to mind the
unity
displayed by our Hindu community.

At the Ganesh Chaturthi festival, practically every Hindu family gathers at
their
ancestral home every year where they pray and dine together at Mont
Saibinnimchem
Fest.

Sometime ago, I was told by our elderly that we Christians, too, shared the same
tradition in Goa i.e. families gathered at their ancestral home and prayed and
dined
together.

But today, instead of gathering and re-uniting, we are drifting away. However,
while
we have forgotten or are trying to forget our culture/tradition, the
Mangaloreans
have upheld it and still follow it.

The feast of the Nativity is one of the biggest feasts in the whole of
Karnataka,
especially in Mangalore. At this feast, brothers, sisters and their families,
including priests and nuns, gather at their parental home or in one of the
sibling's
home where they re-unite, spend time and dine together.

On this feast day, they prepare a dozen vegetable dishes, and, however rich one
may
be, everyone squats on the floor and eats. (The same goes with Konkani
language -
however highly educated one may be, he/she speaks Konkani.)

I am sure there is much more to this celebration of tradition than what I have
written. Therefore, I would appreciate it if any Mangalorean comes forward and
shares his/her experiences in detail on this forum so we may follow suit and
reestablish our familial connections.

Thank you.

The only time I remember eating halwa from the 'Doshkars' or 'Kajemkar'
The one selling Kaddio-Boddio at the feast fair.
When we buy a mixture of all variety, we got little bit of halwa and one or two
jelebies too. And loads of 'Sacrechio ani goddachio Kaddio-boddio'.

Later,  good quality halwa was also brought from Bombay from most tarvottis etc.
Now, Halwa available almost every where with 'Bhaya's Mitai' shops etc

Small rectangular Barfi portions were available for 10 paise each at local
Posreakodde
(Posro) usually kept and displayed in a glass jar.

Laddoo, I first saw at Local Uddpi and it was costing 30p so did  'Makan Pedda'
