[Goanet-News] Goanet Reader: Where old is gold (Reena Martins, in The Telegraph, Kolkata)
Where old is gold In Goa, old houses are being restored to their former glory. Reena Martins checks out some of these gems. Photos: House that! (From top) Ruben Vasco da Gama's villa in Quepem; A bedroom in the villa; Juhi Prasad sits outside her restored house in Saligao. Pix: Reena Martins reena.mart...@abp.in IT IS PAST NOON. Ruben Vasco da Gama is showing guests around Palacio do Deao, his 15-room house in Goa's far-flung Quepem taluka. His wife Celia goes about feeding her children at the dining table, undisturbed as the guests troop in. The visitors can contribute something in a drop box. Ruben, a mechanical engineer, and Celia, a microbiologist, have chosen to lead their lives in the public eye in a house that has been on Goa's tourist map for the last seven years. That was when they got it restored. Beautiful old Goan houses are being bougsht and restored -- and a few, like the da Gama villa, are open to tourists. Old Goan houses will always be in vogue. But the trend of restoring them has gained momentum in the last five to six years, says Michael Lobo, CEO of Homes and Estates, a real estate firm in Goa which over the last eight years has restored and sold 15 majestic Goan houses. Some of the houses are being touted as Portuguese villas, a term freely used by websites and brochures marketing these houses. But Goa-based architect Gerard da Cunha stresses that the phrase is a misnomer. These houses are a very beautiful mix of European and Indian features, and have wonderful proportions, but are not identical to houses in Portugal, he says. The snob value of these houses is escalating. Lobo says he recently sold a 4,000 square foot restored house, with a 15,000 square foot landscaped garden space and a swimming pool, for Rs 2.5 crore (little over half a million US dollars). Until a couple of years ago, foreigners dominated the buyer's market. But today they are only allowed to lease a house for up to 59 months, says Lobo. Not surprisingly, today most of his clients are Indians. Among the foreigners who own villas is Alessandro Baffico, who left a corporate career in Italy to retire in Goa. It cost him Rs 13 lakh in 2001 to buy his 3,000 square feet villa in Saligao, north of Panaji. He spent close to twice the amount on restoring the run down house. To restore their house, the da Gamas travelled to the northern Portuguese city of Braga, famed for its religious architecture. In the libraries there they found references to their house which the Portuguese government had commissioned for its nobleman and priest, Jose Paulo Costa e Almeida, who had it completed by 1787. It took three and a half years for the da Gamas to restore the 11,000 square feet house. The 80,000 square feet ornate garden, which had only nine big trees and a few coconut palms, was replanted with 15 varieties of fruit trees, besides ornamental and spice plantations, says Ruben. In the last decade, when the da Gamas bought and restored the Palacio do Deao, costs have risen by about 10 times, he adds. Juhi Prasad, who recently quit her banking career in Hong Kong, says she is glad she'd invested in a villa in Goa in 1998, when prices were a lot lower. The ramshackle house in Saligao, which Juhi had initially dreamed of converting into a second hand bookshop cum café, was transformed by Juhi's architect sister, Ritu Prasad. The recent spurt in restoration projects in Goa has raised the demand for a new breed of conservation architects. Poonam Verma Mascarenhas, who specialises in conservation, has helped restore seven houses over the last three years. Another five are on the anvil. Architect Hyacinth Pinto has also restored seven houses over the last four years. You can never tell the actual condition or cost of a house before actually starting work, she says. The roof which looks perfect from below is often found to be termite ridden when seen from the top. Not all restored houses are aesthetically pleasing. To avoid interference from buyers -- they want to incorporate things they've seen in China or Thailand or Europe -- Lobo says he shows them the house only when the restoration is nearly completed. There is, however, a visible effort to mix and match the contemporary with the antique, discarded from demolished homes. Da Cunha, too, buys floor tiles, doors and windows from contractors who demolish 100-150 year-old Goan houses, to be fitted in the new houses he designs. Owners are also lending their individual touches to their houses. An interest in feng shui prompted Kornelia Santoro, a German writer who lives in a restored house in Sangolda, north Goa, to paint her house a deep red. Since the house is in the middle of a forest, I had to balance the elements through colour, she says. The Santoros' rooftop was covered with

[Goanet-News] Remembering yesterday's Goa... via Benaulim
Photos at http://fredericknoronha.wordpress.com Remembering yesterday’s Goa… via Benaulim PHOTOFEATURE :: By Frederick Noronha Victor Hugo Gomes had been bugging me to visit Benaulim, and, as usual, I kept postponing. A man of few words (except when he’s writing detailed articles on themes like Goan music!), he just kept telling me, “You come and see for yourself.” Finally, we did make it there. His collection was the most amazing set of objects of the Goa of the yesteryears that I’ve seen at one place. That this artist and former curator of the Museum of Christian Art had done it all by himself, no state funding, and in his own home (with support of his lecturer-wife Alie, short for Aldina) is all the more creditworthy. In his collection, you can unwrap the story of Goa’s agriculture, cullinary practices and more. There are pots of every shape and size from yesterday’s Goa. There are spoons, and other kitchen utensils. Another collection deals with agricultural implements, and the technology — however simple, it was effective and sustainable — of the Goa of the past. On Monday evening, November 2, 2009, Mario Miranda inaugurates the Goa Chitra museum, as Gomes calls it. As we forget what life was in yesterday’s Goa, this venture is a powerful reminder of a simple people, living simple sustainble lives. In a manner that probably made us more contented than we are today. [Goanet] TRIPURARI POORNIMA AT SANQUELIM TODAY
-- Samir Umarye BICHOLIM NOV 2: The Tripurari Poornima a festival of light and lamps that mark the end of the Diwali festival is all set to attract hundreds of devotees of the Vithal temple and visitors for the famous boat competition to be held at Vithalapur Sanquelim. The annual festival held at the Vithal temple -Sanquelim is organised by the Vithalapur Deepawali Utsav Samiti in association with the Department of Art Culture, Information and Publicity department, Goa Tourism Development Corporation and the Goa tourism department on November 2. Tripurari Poornima, is the full moon day in the Kartik month in a traditional Hindu calendar. The day celebrates the victory of Lord Shiva over the demon Tripurasura and the destruction of the three cities – Tripuri – made by demons. The festivities of Diwali conclude on Tripurari Poornima and since last several years the festival at Sanquelim has gained importance at the state level because of the boat competition. The legend has it that a powerful demon named Tripuri or Tripurasura built three cities of gold, silver and iron with the blessing of Lord Shiva. The demon became so powerful that he started attacking humans and the gods (devas). Brahma and Vishnu failed to contain Tripurasura who was armed with several boons from Shiva. Finally, the task of annihilating the demon fell on Lord Shiva and after three days of fight, Lord Shiva killed Tripurasura and destroyed the three cities – Tripuri. This great victory happened on the full moon day in Kartik month and therefore the day is celebrated as Tripuri Poornima. Lighting of lamps in temples and homes in the evening after sunset in honor of Shiva is a major event on this day. At Sanquelim the tradition of celebrating the festival is more than 20 years. Earlier, the people used to float lamps in the Walwanti river to celebrate the festival and there used to be several programmes in the temple the president of the Vithalapur Deepawali Utsav Samiti, Arun Naik told Herald adding due to lack of fund the tradition was dying and it was at this time that the government supported it and now it is a state festival. Annually several boats made of thermocol are floated in the Walvanti river decorated with lights and different colours. The festival is attended by not only Goans but also foreigners who are interested in knowing about our rich tradition. Naik told this also gives a chance to local artists to display their talents. On 2nd November the procession of shrikrishna will begin at 7 pm. At 8 pm there will be vocal performance by Ravindra Sathe. The palanque procession of lord Vitthal would begin at 11 pm followed by the burning the effegy of demon Tripurasur. The boat competition would begin at midnight after the fireworks at the Walwanti river. This year there are also attractive prizes for the boat competition. The prizes include cash prize of Rs 25,000(1st); Rs 20,000 (2nd); 15,000 (3rd) besides a trophy. Besides this there are several other prizes of Rs 10,000(4th); 7,500 (5th); 2,500(6th) and consolation prizes. Those who are interested could contact the tourism department or the secretary of the local samiti, samri Desai (9923119009); Treasure, Mahesh Naik (9422575055). Besides this special buses would leave for Sanquelim from Panjim.

[Goanet] To 'socialize' religion.
FN could not be more right. My problem is with persons who pray over another, not with another, even as I see solitary reflection as the only civil choice. My grandmother never ordered us to join in as she recited the one hour 'long' rosary. My mother put us on our knees and had us scream along : mercifully, the short version. At church, she needed to sing over a hundred others. One can contrast the beauty of accomodation, Buddha style, with the paranoia of one who sees fit to use a whip to inflict his beliefs on his neighbours. The world's communists functioned similarly, until the collapse of that 'religion' in 1990. I see a close analogy. To get personal, I practise a form of Marxism, for myself, it is therapeutic, no doctor need apply. I would never operate a commune, not even a kiibutz of volunteers, leave alone seize land and factories to effect a social distribution of physical comforts. I would sing for Albert, however, with his consent. eric. Prayer (of any religion, every religion!) could well be a low-cost, less-stressful option to medical practitioners: Looks like we still need a lot of it in Goa, despite the high medicos-per-capita ratio :-) FN PS: Even the Sanatanis were were spiritual, before they turned rabidly communal! 2009/11/2 eric pinto ericpin...@yahoo.com Have you ever considered consulting a medical practitioner ? ! eric. [Goanet] Request for words for monkey in Konknni
On the lighter side, Seriously Fred, is this your observation?? Do you mean to say we are living in the planet of the apes and their relatives and friends??? From: Freddy Fernandes ffernandes@emaar.ae To: goanet@lists.goanet.org Subject: [Goanet] Request for words for monkey in Konknni Subject: [Goanet] Request for words for monkey in Konknni Hi Blasio, Mankod or Makod is one and the same as I stated before, the female monkey is also known as Makode, the leader of the group is known as Zungo he is usually the meanest and the biggest monkey of the group, who dominates the group, especially the females. Hetem has a very close resemblance with makod, slightly darker in colour, slightly smaller than the normal makod in size, one major difference is makod does not feast on tender coconuts whereas hetem can devastate a coconut plantation in no time, I remember in the mid 80's, two hetim somehow landed in our village and a good number of coconut trees were completely devastate in just one hour or so, the people tried a lot of ways to chase them off, beating utensils, lighting fire crackers, flinging stones, dogs where brought in but they wouldn't go, A couple of my tree too got the treatment, the coconut trees were very tall so probably they thought they were safe, so unfortunately I had no option but to shoot them down.. The last time I had visited the Vidhan Sabha, it did look like a zoo, I had also seen two guys resembling a gorilla and an ape, from the look of them they looked to be family members from south Goa, then there was some one who reminded me of a baboon, who thinks his, is always red from the other side of Panjim, there was also the trickster chimp from Quepem, a couple of hetim from Canacona seemed to be ready to snatch food packets from the visitors, and ofcourse the Zungo from Margao kept a close look on all the visitors. If you visit the Vidhan Sabha in the near future please let me know if you come encounter any new species.
[Goanet] HOUSE OF PAI TIATRIST partial collapse
A part of the rear portion of the over 140 years old “House of Pai Tiatrist “ at Modsai Behind the Holy Spirit Institute Margao collapsed early this cold morning at around 0413 hrs IST ( on All Soul’s Day 2nd November; ) as per information received by this writer early this morning from Ms Ana Maria Carolina Quadros Fernandes, 77 yrs daughter in law of “Pai Tiatrist” late Joao Agostinho Fernandes. It may be recalled that the Rajya Sabha MP Mr. Shantaram L Naik had last year in July 2008 impressed upon the Goa Government to preserve such old houses of eminent personalities for posterity on the lines of the “Shanti Niketan” of Rabindranath Tagore, at Kolkatta, West Bengal India so that future generations will be inspired by the works of these personalities who rose to great heights under trying circumstances unlike the modern day wherwithal. This could also help in promoting cultural tourism in the State. The issue also figured at the Ad hoc Committee meet on Budgetary demands 2009-2010 of Govt of Goa held in June 2009. The Government it is learnt has through the Town and Country Planning Department directed them to formulate a scheme for the purpose . While the Department of Tourism could consider to include such houses in the tourist visit itineryThere are other houses too which need to be preserved for posterity, viz; the houses of Francisco Luis Gomes, at Navelim Dom Moraes, at Santa Cruz poet Baki Bab Borkar at Borim etc. Interestingly the renowned architect Mr. Gerard Da Cunha from Torda Alto Porvorim Bardez Goa who has since 17th October, 2008 last year despite his extremely busy schedule had been drawing plans for the restoration of the house and a few structures thereon for the upkeep of the same . Besides that it could help sustain the income of the inmates viz the daughter –in-law , her daughter, Ms Sharmila Fernandes and their two minor children Sonali and Sanil Fernandes through self employment. Indeed their contribution towards maintaining the cultural heritage of our land by preserving this House has been appreciated by several persons and especially NRI's who have visited their humble home since 20th July 2008 when the indoor auditorium of Ravindra Bhavan was named after Pai Tiatrist According to Ms Ana Maria Carolina Quadros Fernandes ( the wife of tiatrist Antonelio (Tony ) Conceicao Fernandes –son of Pai Tiatrist ) who spoke to this writer stated that she and her daughter despite their financial constraints have boldly shooed away prospective realtors who were eyeing the 449 m2 property, as they stand determined to honour both in letter and spirit the intention of late Joao Agostinho Fernandes (14.12.1871 to 29.08.1947 ) and his spouse Regina Fernandes ( 16.11.1880 – 20.12.1908 ) who was the first lady to ever act on stage on 22.11.1904 at a time when women making public appearances was taboo. Incidentally it was only much later that Kamalabhai Gokhale in the late 1930;s who came forth to don the honours on stage. Mr Da Cunha Arch recently on 27th October, 2009 schedule, visited the site to give the final touches to the restoration plan. The part which collapsed today is otherwise in the restoration plan intended to be demolished according to Mr Da Cunha who spoke to this writer , today when informed of the mishap. However the inherent fear of the inmates that this may make the house vulnerable to theft and a fear that the main part of the house too may eventually collapse owing to the vagaries of the climate is indeed cause for their concern. Ms Sharmila Fernandes, infact reported the matter telephonically to Mr. Shantaram L Naik RS MP with the hope that efforts be expedited to set in motion restoration of the same and expressed her bonafide fears to him of imminent disaster. No sooner the news of the part collapse of this House reached the electronic and print media they converged at the site and examined the extent of damage to the same apparently to impress upon the Goa Government to step in at the earliest. Mr Shantaram L Naik MP Rajya Sabha alongwith this writer visited the House this evening at 1730 hrs to assess the damage. He expressed concern and promised to move the Government to render immediate assistance to ensure the restoration promptly. He perused the draft plan for restoration of the House and requested the members of the family to get the restoration estimates be worked out so that he could set the ball rolling as he will be proceeding to New Delhi tommorrow for the forthcoming month long winter session of Parliament. Both Ms Ana Fernandes and her daughter Ms Sharmila were indeed pleased by the response and sympathy invoked by the media and the voluntary visit of the Hon;ble MP Mr Shantaram Naik and had a word of praise for both for their efforts to redress their unfortunate plight. [Goanet] Mestisos of Goa , where are they ?
Mestisos can easily be defined, but the big mystery is where are they all gone, for in Goa of today, hardly anyone claim to be a mestiso. Mestisos are the children of the Portuguese menfolk and the Indian women who willingly co-habited with them during the period 1510 - 1780 when some ships sailing from Lisbon via Cape to Goa were sunk in the high seas( navigation techniques being primitive then ) and hence hardly any Portuguese women ever travelled to Goa during this period. Children of such unions were mostly found in Old Goa and some in the northern and eastern border villages of the then Goa comprised of only three talukas, i.e. Ilhas (Tiswadi), Salcete and Bardez. Some of these border villages can easily be pinpointed today like Siolim and Colvale in the north and in the east villages like Assonora, Aldona, Pomburpa, Chorao Divar Is. Loutulim, Raia , Curtorim, and Macazana. Children of inter-racial marriages could be of two kinds , one fair skinned like their Portuguese fathers and others dark like their Indian mothers. During my school days in Lyceum there were quite a number of students with mestiso background. All of them however, resented on being called mestisos but insisted they were descendentes meaning of pure Portuguese pedigree.

Re: [Goanet] Mestisos of Goa , where are they ?
Hi Antonio, I remember reading somewhere, can't remember where, maybe Charles Boxer, that at the time of liberation in 1961, there were only a few mestisos left in Goa. I suspect after 1961, most of them left for Portugal. I do know one or two in Goa, but they are happy to be Goan and nothing else. I have to say a word here about Indo-Euro mixed races. When I was growing up in Dubai, we had an unusually high contingent of Anglo-Indian children in our school. All of them without exception befriended their white classmates rather than their Asian ones. Also, sadly either through lack of application or IQ, they did not fare well academically. Perhaps this was largely because they depended on their good looks and ability to speak English with an accent to get them ahead. Alas life proved to be cruel, when it demanded of us all, scholastic commitment which the Anglo-Indian kids seemed to lack. This is just a cameo from my own life and not to be extrapolated into anything larger, for this week, the UK is running programmes on race and one of the programmes hypotheses that mixed-races have a higher chance of success in life. [Goanet] GOACAN protest highlights various issues affecting GramSabhas.
--- Do GOACAN a favour, circulate this email to your family members, relatives, neighbours and friends. Help other CONSUMERS to be better informed. -- GOACAN protest highlights various issues affecting GramSabhas - Consumer Forum volunteers held a protest action at Margao near the office of the Block Development Officer (BDO) Salcete Taluka to highlight the many pending demands of the Gram Sabha members. Armed with black flags and placards, the protest action by the Forum Volunteers was held under the banner of GOACAN. As part of its Citizens Awareness Campaign Gram Sabha Zagrut Za, GOACAN submitted a memorandum to the BDO highlighting various issues like the irregular convening of Gram Sabhas: This is a regular feature in many Panchayats and the Consumer Forums have repeatedly reported this to the BDOs office. The delay in convening of the Gram Sabhas is resulting in increased backlog of reporting of various works undertaken by the Panchayat, non-communication of various Govt. schemes, delay in communicating peoples opinion on many Govt. policies, proposals, amendments etc. as announced in the Govt. Official Gazette and lack of transparency accountability on the performance of the elected Panchayat members. Delay in setting up Mandatory Committees and obstacles to their functioning: the very essence of the 73rd Amendment is sought to be stifled with the Mandatory Committees under Goa Panchayat Raj Act not being set up i.e. Supervisory Committees, Vigilance Committee, Social Justice Committee. In fact even the Audit Reports have stated that the non-functioning of the Committees is affecting the transparency and accountability of the Panchayats. Those Supervisory Committees that have been set up have faced a non-co-operative approach from the Panchayat. Lack of guidance to members of the Committees to be set up under various Acts Guidelines such as the Garbage Management Committee under The Goa Non-Biodegradable Garbage (Control) Act 1996, the Village Child Committee under the Goa Children’s Act 2003 and the Village Water Sanitation Committees (VWSC) under the Rural Water Supply Sanitation Program of the Ministry of Rural Development (MORD) Government of India. Organising of Open House sessions at the Panchayat level for every Panchayat in the Block by the BDOs office is a must to obtain feed back from the Gram Sabha members on the performance of the Village Panchayats as well as to inform them of the plans and proposals of the Directorate to implement the 73rd Amendment and strengthen grass root democracy. Popularizing the BDO Complaint Box as a Grievance Redressal Mechanism for Gram Sabha members is very important, however if the procedure for receiving and settling such complaints is not publicized then the entire effort will be counter productive. Provision Public Access to log books with tabulated formats to keep track of Fortnightly Panchayat Meetings, Gram Sabhas and the submission of the Minutes, setting up of various Committees, their Meetings and Reports needs to be made. Training should be given to Gram Sabha members of Salcete Block on participation in Gram Sabhas, Proposal Resolution drafting, Committee Report presentation, preparation of Annual Budget and Annual Development Plan and the conducting of a Social Audit. Also, it may be noted that the Ward Development Committees (WDCs) in the respective Panchayats must be formed and requisite training be provided to the members so that they can play a significant role in the preparation of the Annual Plan as part of the grassroots participatory planning process. The BDOs office has still not been pro active on this matter thereby creating the impression that the BDO is not serious about the involvement of the Gram Sabha members in the planning process keeping in mind that the plans need to be submitted to the District Planning Committee by Jan 2010 and in view of the finalisation of the Goa Regional Plan 2021 by the Goa Town and Country Planning Department. Representations from the Betalbatim Civic and Consumer Forum and the Navelim Civic and Consumer Forum were also submitted to the BDO highlighting the irregular holding of Gram Sabhas and providing a detailed record of the Gram Sabhas that have not been held for the last 3 years. Copies of the representations have been submitted to the Chief Secretary Govt. of Goa, Secretary -Panchayati Raj Community Development, Govt. of Goa, Dy. Albert writes:- We are born with stuborn rituals. Many of these so called rituals have descended into us from our ancient religion that our fore fathers practised until we became christians. We are in fact Christian the word that means Christlike. It is not a religion to boast but a way of life that one lives. God the father through Moses gave us just ten commandments but Jesus in his own Glory and Glory descended on him from His almighty Father shortened the ten commandments into just two. How many of us are paying attention to the first Commandment ? The world would have been a better place to live if only we had to read the word of God and meditate on it. We would have got so much of inspiration if we had just to mediate the word of God. But instead we prefer to make fun of others, criticise other person's belief etc etc. It is a fact that Jesus told us through the Bible about heaven and hell. When I questioned the existance of Purgortory one mr. Eric Pinto suggested me to see the doctor. For what? for speaking the truth,? for highlighting what Jesus said ? Just because the masses for thousand of years believed that there exist purgotary it does not make a truth. So if we are to follow the theory that our ancestors did this and that and so it is true, then what our ancestors did before they were forcebly baptised should also be taken as truth. Do not rely on others but try to do your best to guide others individually. Every drop makes an ocean. As far as Mother Mary is concerned, one should know the difference between worship and intercession. Jesus performed his first miracle upon the request of Mother Mary who is our intercessor. So also in the Bible James Chapter 5 verse 13 - 20, we find intercession by the elders of the church for the sick. As for miracles, does God have to work miracles ? God is not dependent on man and is not obliged to work miracles for man. Keep writing more views and guidelines without any frustration in mind towards anybody, Mr Albert. God bless

[Goanet] Why salt?
Dr Celsa Pinto (currently the director of education, Government of Goa), in her economic history of Goa says that the Anglo-Portuguese treaty of 1878 brought down barriers between trade in Portuguese Goa and British India. There were some exceptions though -- salt, opium, liquors, arms and ammunition. One can understand opium (though the British had opium wars with China), and even liquors, arms and ammunity. To promote the objectives http://www.goansinoman.com/objectives.htm of the GCO, an ad-hoc Committee http://www.goansinoman.com/managing_committee.htmwas initially established in January 2008. This Committee set up the draft Constitution, which was formally adopted at the first General Body Meeting held on 5th December 2008 and approved by Fr. Raul Ramos, Parish Priest of Sts. Peter and Paul Church, Ruwi. The Spiritual Director of the GCO is Fr. Albert D'Silva, Asst. Parish Priest. At this first GBM, the GCO members also elected the current Managing Committeehttp://www.goansinoman.com/managing_committee.htm, which will hold Office till 31st December 2009. In order to encourage all Goans in Oman to join the GCO, no membership fee is currently levied. However, if your register on this website, you will receive communications on the GCO and its activities, and on issues relevant to NRGs. From: Albert Desouza alizadeso...@hotmail.com To: Major domo goanet goanet@lists.goanet.org Sent: Mon, November 2, 2009 12:30:01 PM Subject: [Goanet] God and You Albert writes:- We are born with stuborn rituals. There was no need for Jesus to take so much trouble to come down on earth if we had to continue what the Jews believed that time . They believed in sun god are we doing it ? why not ? are the jews not our ancestors ? was Jesus not a Jew ? _ New Windows 7: Simplify what you do everyday. Speaking of recalibration of wooden measures, every unit - 'paili', 'podd', 'solgem' had a metal rod in the center. Such unit was called filsanvachi paili, solgem, etc. (government approved measure.) The seller filled the measure until it overflowed. He/she then either used a piece of metal pipe or bamboo, which he/she rolled over the unit and removed the excess rice/cereals piled over it, thus bringing the contents to a flat level. The process was called map kapunk (to level the measure) - kapun paili, kapun solgem, (leveled paili, solgem) etc. If the measure was not cut/leveled, the expression used was suvyen paili - piled up paili. Sukeo musureo mirsango (small, dried chilies) were measured thus. The paili was filled with chilies and shaken repeatedly so as to allow them to settle in. Similarly, the olden-day Soreachem dukorn (Taverna) used 'filsanvacho peg' (government approved peg with a seal) - a two-in-one unit with full peg on one side and a half peg on the other; it looked like an hourglass. I think it was made of brass. It was and still is the only correct measure peg. 12 such pegs make a bottle, but not from current pegs. [Goanet] Ex-US President still India's best friend
Nuclear deal is India's passport to the world: Bush Hindustan Times New Delhi, Oct. 31 Addressing the Hindustan Times Leadership Summit, former US president George W Bush said that N-deal shows that the US recognises India's nuclear programme. He said that the deal will empower the Indian economy and added that it is called India's passport to the world. Speaking at the Summit, the former US President also said that during his tenure India was his priority in foreign policy and added that he saw India coming as a big force long back and wanted America to pay attention. Discussing the issue of terrorism, Bush said that both US and India were engaged in an ideological battle against extremists who kill innocents. He said 9/11 in US and 26/11 in India gave both the nations clarity to tackle such acts of terror. The extremists hate our vision of human rights, prosperity and peace, he added. On the issue of India's entry into the United Nations Security Council, Bush said he supports India's claim for a permanent berth and wants the US to back India's claim. Talking about his relations with Prime Minsiter Manmohan Singh, Bush said, I like your PM. He is a wise leader and really good man and I am proud to call him a friend. Expressing his love for India, Bush said that his life has changed after retirement, but not his love for India. America feels a special kinship with the people of largest democracy, he said. Bush also said that America welcomes more students from India than any other country.
[Goanet] George Bush, Indian Hero
This article is from the blog res gestae (www.rajivndesai.blogspot.com) you can reach the person managing the list at i...@comma.in Saturday, October 31, 2009 Delhi Journal George Bush, Indian Hero At a recent event in the Taj Palace Hotel in New Delhi, I found myself with my arm around his waist and his arm around my shoulder, posed for a photo opportunity. George W Bush, the much reviled former President of the United States, was in an expansive mood that evening. Aside of his base in America, this was fawning that had to be seen to be believed. He is the unquestioned hero of India's elite. A senior member of the ruling Congress party said he would recommend him for the Bharat Ratna, the highest civilian award. In his early sixties, Bush is sprightly and amazingly friendly. He mingled with guests and stayed on to have what I consider the Taj's most fabulous spread. Bush has been a divisive item in my immediate family and my friends in America. They hate him for the shock and awe bombing of Iraq; his assent for the atrocities in Guantanamo. It is truly terrible. For me though, those are American problems. Why should I get worked up about it? Having worked closely with the US mission in Delhi and the Prime Minister to steer the Indo-US civil nuclear deal to its completion, I was proud to shake hands with him, be photographed with him. Bush, for India, has been the best ever US President. Bill Clinton, whom the Indian establishment still admires, set the trend. Bush accomplished what seems to have not occurred to Clinton. He brought India into the global mainstream. If Richard Nixon is held in esteem for opening China, Bush should be acclaimed for his outreach to India. President Bush, thank you for your support, I said to him. Hated, reviled and caricatured among my liberal intellectual and activist friends in the US, Bush to me has been an icon; he overcame the traditional US highbrow establishment's attitude about India. Between my friends in the US embassy in Delhi and in the Prime Minister's office, we worked to see the deal through. It wouldn't have happened without the unflagging support of Bush and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. With the Prime Minister committed to the deal, the diplomats in the US Embassy in Delhi led from the front. They overcame bureaucratic hurdles on both sides to push the deal. We always knew there would be opposition. For one thing, there was the Left, a key supporter of the Congress-led UPA government. It was also not very clear that the Congress Party was enthusiastic about the deal. Once assured of US support, the Prime Minister put his government on the line and the Congress Party fell in line thanks to Sonia Gandhi's enlightened world view. In the event, much drama happened. There was a vote in Parliament and the deal was sealed. Of course, Dr Singh is the hero and Sonia Gandhi, who backed him. Nobody can, however, deny that Bush's enamored view of India was the driving force. Not to forget, the Congress managed to win another term in 2009. That's why I was thrilled to meet him, never mind that my friends in America won't talk to me. They may have questions about Bush; for India, he is the greatest US President ever. It showed that evening. Copyright Rajiv Desai 2009

[Goanet] US alert on 26/11-type strikes along western coast (and GOA?)
Josy Joseph / DNA** * *( http://www.dnaindia.com/india/report_us-alert-on-26-11-type-strikes-along-western-coast_1306459 ) *New Delhi: *US intelligence agencies have alerted the Union home ministry about possible26/11-type terrorist strikes on coastal states such as Maharashtra, Gujarat and Karnataka. The warning came a few weeks ago, home ministry sources said. The alert points to two possible scenarios. One is a sea-borne attack originating from the Iranian port of Chabahar, a free-trade area being developed with assistance from New Delhi, said the sources. The port is a hub for fishing trawlers, especially those belonging to a Pakistani syndicate. The other scenario is that Pakistani terrorists could seize Indian fishing trawlers and use them to strike. The two possibilities have been discussed by Indian agencies over the past few days. Navy sources say it is almost impossible for terrorists to travel all the way from Chabahar to Mumbai, or to another city on the Indian coast, to launch an attack. It would take a minimum of four days to travel through the high seas, which are regularly patrolled by world navies because of heightened piracy activities in the area. The BSF has also raised an alert about a possible intrusion by terrorists through the Sir Creek area. According to the BSF, the disputed area is the most vulnerable spot, and it would only take a few hours for a group of terrorists to sneak into India from the Pakistani side.

[Goanet] Part of Pai tiatrist's home caves in
Part of Pai tiatrist's home caves in TNN 3 November 2009, 02:43am IST MARGAO: Nature dealt yet another blow to the rundown house of the late Joao Agustinho Fernandes, fondly called Pai tiatrist, on Monday after one of its walls caved in, adding to the insecurities of the heirs of the legendary Konkani stage artiste. On August 30, last year, TOI had highlighted the ramshackled condition of the house in Borda, Margao and the dire financial straits of Pai tiatrist's larger family who now occupy the house. After withstanding the vagaries of nature and its elements for well over a century, the house has been crying for attention for long. Embedded within this rundown house is a slice of Goa's history, by virtue of the fact that the dwelling belongs to the acclaimed pioneer of tiatr in Goa, whose 62nd death anniversary was observed just recently. The collapse of a part of the house has once again brought into focus the failure of the government to take care of its historical structures. Apart from naming the main auditorium of Ravindra Bhavan, Margao, after the tiatrist, the government has failed to do anything worthwhile to alleviate the hardships of the living heirs of Joao Agustinho Fernandes who are now forced to live in penury in their ancestral house. Septuagenarian Ana Maria Carolina Fernandes, widow of Pai tiatrist's only son, the late Antonelio (Tony) Conceissao Fernandes, and her daughter Sharmila, along with her two children, now occupy the ramshackled dwelling from where Pai tiatrist penned tiatrs. Joao Fernandes is learnt to have written 27 Konkani tiatrs, out of which 16 have been staged. Ana Maria and Sharmila have so far tried to preserve the humble dwelling and the ancient artifacts, despite severe financial constraints. They have no steady source of financial income and manage to make ends meet by doing odd jobs. Rajya Sabha MP Shantaram Naik, speaking to TOI, advocated the formulation of a policy by the state government to preserve heritage structures. I would have been glad to get the house of Pai tiatrist repaired and renovated through the MPLAD scheme. However, there is no provision in the scheme to grant financial assistance for structures not notified as heritage monuments. I will, however, take up the matter with the state government, Naik said. http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/goa/Part-of-Pai-tiatrists-home-caves-in/articleshow/5190667.cms

[Goanet] Remembering yesterday's Goa... via Benaulim
[Goanet] Journalist tipped off Goa police about NRI fugitive
Journalist tipped off Goa police about NRI fugitive 2009-10-28 11:30:00 It was a tip-off from a journalist that helped police in Goa arrest Ajay Kaushal, the NRI from Britain who was fleeing a 15-year sentence for assault and kidnapping, an official said. Kaushal, 50, who is on the most wanted list of the Lancashire constabulary, was arrested Tuesday from a hotel in the coastal resort town of Colva, 40 km from here. Kaushal's presence in Goa was noted after the media extensively reported the death of his companion William Scott, 39, a Scottish national who was found mysteriously dead in his hotel room. Superintendent of Police (SP) Atmaram Deshpande said that an email written by a journalist to the South Goa district SP Allen D'Sa had alerted the police about Kaushal's identity. 'A member of the media informed the police,' Deshpande told IANS. The email had details of Kaushal's criminal background in Britain, which police used after corroborating information with the Lancashire police, Deshpande said, without revealing the identity of the informer. Despite being a fugitive on the run before a Preston crown court sentenced him to 15years for kidnapping a British businessman at Burnley, Kaushal had booked himself at Colva hotel using his real identity. 'I cannot comment much about that. But Kaushal had visited Goa once before. And this time he had a visa issued from our Thailand embassy,' Deshpande said. The British embassy, he said, had been informed about Kaushal's arrest. 'A team from the Lancashire police or the Interpol will be here to pick him up and take him back to the UK, where he is wanted,' the official said. http://sify.com/news/Journalist-tipped-off-Goa-police-about-NRI-fugitive-news-jk2l4dh.html

[Goanet] India issues one thousandth final fInal warning
Date: Sun, 1 Nov 2009 00:45:12 -0700 (PDT) From: Rajan P. Parrikar parri...@yahoo.com Speaking at a public meeting in Madurai, the Home Minister said if Pakistan tries to send terrorists into India again, India would give a crushing response. I've been warning Pakistan every time, to not play with us again and to stop with the Mumbai game. I'm warning Pakistan for the last time. If Pakistan attempts to send terrorists into India again, India will not only foil those attempts but also give them a crushing response, said Chidambaram. Mario observes: After tens of thousands of innocent Indians have been killed by jihadis since Independance, a few dozen to a few hundred at a time, the Indian government has finally had it, here seen threatening Pakistan with yet another crushing tongue lashing. The best we can realistically hope for in India is a quick response by security forces once an attack has begun. I hope India has finally set up S.W.A.T. teams in every major city and dispersed the Black Cat commandos to bases around the country, and have provided all these specialized response units with properly fitting bullet-proof vests and helmets, powerful assault weapons and stun guns, night vision equipment, communications jamming equipment, body heat detecting equipment and other devices that behoove a country that prides itself on providing the world with superior technological brains. Also, I hope they will provide the personnel with adequate training to use all these resources efficiently.

Re: [Goanet] Let us pray
Date: Mon, 2 Nov 2009 07:23:21 -0800 (PST) From: Santosh Helekar chimbel...@yahoo.com On the contrary, the above study showed that prayer had no medical benefit for the patients at all. Please see: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/12082681/print/1/displaymode/1098/ QUOTE: In the largest study of its kind, researchers found that having people pray for heart bypass surgery patients had no effect on their recovery. In fact, patients who knew they were being prayed for had a slightly higher rate of complications. UNQUOTE Mario observes: Santosh, For prayers to have any provable salutary affect on someone else's illness makes no logical sense to me. If it did many more would recover than actually do. It probably makes those doing the praying feel better and less helpless. However, having been in this situation myself, I find it equally absurd that patients who knew that others were praying for them had a higher rate of complications. Makes no sense. I would think this would be neutral at worst and is probably a sampling anomaly, an observed correlation without being a cause. When I had no idea whether I was going to live or die, I developed some psychological coping mechanisms and an attitude of acceptance of my situation but yet a resolve and determination to fight to the very end, which were substantially based on my personal religious beliefs and code. This was partly credited by my treatment team with the positive outcome. I was also determined to show those closest to me, especially my young adult kids, how to deal with a negative outcome with grace and dignity if it came to that, and to go out in style if I could. I learned this from other friends who had died in similar circumstances and had impressed me with their attitudes. Since my treatment team had been instructed in no uncertain terms from the outset that they should be as aggressive as they knew how, I was confident they would do their best. In the end, who the hell really knows what worked? Catching it in time, an excellent surgeon who happened to be an Indian, and every medical physician and technician guessing right on how to treat a very rare condition that they don't see very often, would be my guess.
Re: [Goanet] Reign of Makods - previously Reign of Fanatics
Hello Mario, Possibly - but nothing like giving it a try. The best part of the people of Kerela is trying to communicate in English/Hindi. They stubbornly stick to their mother tongue and of course making it difficult to communicate. And of course connections open doors faster than butter melting in hot sun. God Bless Goa and all give the Goans saving grace to resurrect Goa from the dumps. Incidentally I got better treatment in Kerela for the tourism deals. Somehow some Goans were not willing to walk that extra mile, raising multiple bogies that I never even thought of. But then, arent we the wisest race in India to permit all thats happening- of course those who are residing out of Goa are to be blamed too including myself. If communists were any good the old Soviet Union, China, Cuba, N. Korea, Zimbabwe, Sudan, Somalia, Vietnam, Venezuela, Nicaragua and Bolivia would all be like heaven on earth instead of the hell-holes they were and are. I think the solution is for Goa to attract more Mallus and elect fewer makods:-))

As far as the Zungo is concerned, he will locate you in no time, depending on the size of the packets you carry ! Hope you have a very pleasant visit to our elite Goan zoo I'll be waiting for your views on the zoo and it's inmates, but I have a rather funny feeling, that once you are inside, you might think that I misguided you to a brothel, rather than to a zoo, as you will immediately notice that everything can be acquired for a price and the higher the price you pay, the better, the service rendered.
