[Goanet-News] Should you believe the word 'Goanese' is a pejorative term? (Selma Carvalho, Goanet summaries)
Goanet highlights by Selma Carvalho An intriguing discussion dominated Goanet this week -- over the usage of the word Goanese. Alda Figueiredo had used the word Goanese in the title of her cookery book, The Goanese fusion flavours and writer Victor Rangel-Ribeiro took great offence to this: http://lists.goanet.org/pipermail/goanet-goanet.org/2009-November/186039.html Like many words in the English language which are coined by using the rules of grammar and adding a suffix ese to denote belonging to the British coined this word for Goans to denote belonging to nation of Goa. Prior to 1961, when Goa was still a separate entity from India, they used this word all over the British Empire whether it was in high-level official correspondence or references in the press to Goans or in their offices. There is no evidence whatsoever that it was a pejorative, certainly not in East Africa where perhaps it was most widely used. However, pejoration of words does take place over a period of time. The word malhindi in the Gulf has over the years undergone pejoration, although it simply means from India. The word Asiatic is now considered a pejorative although at one time it would mean anyone from Asia. To believe that the word Goanese is a pejorative is to somehow give credence and merit to the possibility that Goans were seen as lowly and deserving of disdain. Certainly Alda Figueiredo does not deserve ire for, in some measure, she is rightfully reclaiming the word of its original meaning just as we are now reclaiming our pride in the Konkani language when it was for a few generations seen as the language of the lowly. If we condemn Alda, then we must also demand an apology from the British for all that has been written about Goans prior to 1961, however innocuous and benign. [Goanet] Disdain for Mangaloreians.
The relatively small number of Carnatic catholics in Bombay was almost completely unrepresented in both the Public Sevices, as well as the private sector. They were predominantly self employed, besides found work in the low wage blue collar area. They were almost totally absent from the ranks of the Archdiocese, at every level. They did not abandon the konkani language, indeed a young Mangalore seminarian would have found living in the midst of our kids in Bombay very difficult, given the social arrogance of our class before the emergence of Indian language mores. The calumny in the piece rubs salt in a wound. As a matter of fact, it represents the fairly standard output of an aggrieved east indian observer, except that Goans are the usual 'villains of the piece.' eric. From: jorge r jorger...@gmail.com To: goa...@goanet.org Sent: Tue, November 24, 2009 12:59:16 AM Subject: [Goanet] NATIVE CATHOLICS v/s MIGRANT CATHOLICS Bombay is the only part in India where the native catholics don't dominate the catholic churches/schools/hospitals/institutions,etc inspite of the fact that all the catholic churches/schools/hospitals/institutions,etc in bombay stand on the lands donated by the native catholics. The native catholics also don't control the vacant church properties in Bombay which at present market value runs into thousands of crores of rupees and which were also donated by native catholics. So who is dominating and controlling the parish councils, church committees, catholic school committees, parish buildings, catholic churches/schools/hospitals/institutions, vacant church properties, archbishop house, etc in Bombay. The answer is Mangalorean catholics and this is the reason why the mangalorean catholics in bombay have prospered. Due to the domination by the Mangalorean catholics the native catholics of bombay who are locally known by the name eastindians ( or marathi speaking catholics) have been sidelined. This is the reason why the native catholics in Vasai to free themselves from the clutches of the mangaloreans separated from the Bombay diocese and created their Vasai diocese. Go in any East Indian Gaothan (village) in Bombay and you will find majority of catholics living are Mangaloreans. Most of these mangaloreans during the 1960s and 70s came to live on rent. Since eastindians were poor and ignorant they did not make proper leave license agreements which the mangaloreans took advantage of and refused to vacate the rooms which the eastindians had given to them on rental basis. Re: [Goanet] Disdain for Mangaloreians.
At the street level, we had arrived at a modus vivendi with the 'norteiros'. Parish priests were mainly Goan, we intermarried, and we had a common language. A hundred and fifty years has purchased us grudging acceptance. Konkanni useage lent an appearance of clannishness to Mangaloreians and they were hurt socially. Also lacking was the camarederie that builds around a bottle: alcohol plays a very small role in Mangalore culture and revelry. eric. [Goanet] ] United Tribal Associations Alliance (UTAA) (MIINING!!!)
*Storm brewing in Quepem taluka over mining plans* ** *HERALD REPORTER * *Storm brewing in Quepem taluka over mining plans * *HERALD REPORTER * *MARGAO, NOV 23 * A storm is brewing in the Scheduled Tribe dominated areas of the hilly villages of Balli and Fatorpa and surrounding areas over plans to seek mining leases in this green belt. What has stirred a hornet’s nest amongst the villagers is the decision by the revenue officials of Quepem taluka to invite suggestions and objections from the villagers over the mining leases sought by as many as 10 parties. The villagers are disturbed over the fact that the applicants have asked to carry out mining in a huge area admeasuring 1806.30 hectares. If allowed, the local people fear the mining activity would spell doom for the environment and the rich flora and fauna, besides displacing the scheduled tribe people from the habitat. Information gathered by Herald revealed that mining lease has been sought by one Praful R Kothari in an area spanning 261.50 hectares in Bendulem. Similarly one Amresh V Mehta has applied separately for mining leases at Fatorpa in land admeasuring 121.60 hectares and 91.20 hectares respectively. Iva Mines and Maries have filed three applications for mining leases in Fatorpa and Quittol. The area sought to be covered under mining is 216.32, 151.40 and 49.57 hectares of land. Another four applications have come from Nippa Mehta for mining leases of around 321.80 hectares in Coidem village, 102.71 and 178.40 hectares in Tiloy village. Says Prakash Velip, president of United Tribal Associations Alliance (UTAA): “This is a matter for grave concern for the scheduled tribes which inhabit these hilly areas of Quepem taluka. What has agitated Velip is the very attitude of the talathi of Balli village, who displayed the public notice only after the date for suggestions and objections expired. “A delegation of UTAA will call on the mamlatdar Natu to draw his attention over the talathi’s action. This needs a serious probe and action against the official,” Velip demanded at a press briefing. Velip further demanded that the government should immediately accept the 12-point charter of demands made by UTAA as only at ST Commission and other powers can protect the rights of the scheduled tribe population. *http://oheraldo.in/pagedetails.asp?nid=30305cid=2*http://oheraldo.in/pagedetails.asp?nid=30305cid=2 *VIVA GOA* __._,_.___ Reply to senderkonkani_catho...@yahoo.com?subject=united+tribal+associations+alliance+(UTAA)| Reply to groupgoan_online_allia...@yahoogroups.com?subject=united+tribal+associations+alliance+(UTAA) Messages in this topichttp://groups.yahoo.com/group/Goan_Online_Alliance/message/1437;_ylc=X3oDMTM1cTI5bHNwBF9TAzk3MzU5NzE0BGdycElkAzE5MTA5MTE3BGdycHNwSWQDMTcwNTA2MDQxMQRtc2dJZAMxNDM3BHNlYwNmdHIEc2xrA3Z0cGMEc3RpbWUDMTI1OTA3MTQzMQR0cGNJZAMxNDM3( 1) Recent Activity: Visit Your Grouphttp://groups.yahoo.com/group/Goan_Online_Alliance;_ylc=X3oDMTJmc2Zvb3ZjBF9TAzk3MzU5NzE0BGdycElkAzE5MTA5MTE3BGdycHNwSWQDMTcwNTA2MDQxMQRzZWMDdnRsBHNsawN2Z2hwBHN0aW1lAzEyNTkwNzE0MzE- Start a New Topichttp://groups.yahoo.com/group/Goan_Online_Alliance/post;_ylc=X3oDMTJmZGpzdDRoBF9TAzk3MzU5NzE0BGdycElkAzE5MTA5MTE3BGdycHNwSWQDMTcwNTA2MDQxMQRzZWMDZnRyBHNsawNudHBjBHN0aW1lAzEyNTkwNzE0MzE- MARKETPLACE Going Green: Your Yahoo! Date: Mon, 23 Nov 2009 13:25:55 -0500 From: Venantius J Pinto venantius.pi...@gmail.com WBAI Board Candidate Sings for a Revolution Arun Aguiar is a Goan. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L5yeyy-6uLQ HIs father was Prof. Aguiar (Vice Principal, and Professor of English, Logic, Philosophy, Latin). He was also Knight Commander of Order of St Gregory, and President of the Catholic Association of Bombay. Arun's mother was Prof. Yvette Coelho (Head of Dept. of French) at St. Xaviers. Mumbai. Mario observes: Very sad to see Arun, scion of an accomplished Goan family, confusing Gandhiji with Lenin. Gahndhiji's ideas led to a peaceful and successful non-violent revolution against the mightiest colonial superpower of its era. Lenin's ideas led to the most evil and violently blood thirsty political systems ever devised by man to control and oppress their fellow man, which all eventually imploded under its internal absurdities and inconsistencies and failure to understand the unquenchable desire of individual human beings for freedom and independence.
[Goanet] Protection from misinformation regarding public health
It is best not to trust medical and health-related information on the internet or in public forums such as this one, unless it is provided by recognized and responsible public service agencies or institutions. These institutions have the responsibility to be truthful to the victims of illness and the public at large. They cannot disseminate garbage and lies. If they resort to such mendacity for political, religious, commercial or some other self-serving reason, not only will they lose credibility, but they will be sued in the court of law, and might even face the prospect of being shut down by regulatory agencies for misleading the public, especially in countries where such regulations are strictly enforced. In contrast, an unregulated quack or an irresponsible individual who is absolutely ignorant about scientific medicine can make all kinds of blatant bogus statements in public without any legal consequences or criminal penalty. Ordinarily, almost everybody, including the poor uneducated folk, would ignore his garbage, as they would that of a madman or a crackpot on the street. But when the garbage comes from a person who ought to be responsible, otherwise, or who has some credibility, however unjustified, for unrelated reasons, such as a high public official or a priest, a lot of people tend to fall for his crap, if for nothing else, then because he belongs to their religion, political party or something. Unfortunately, this public menace has now grown to epidemic proportions in India, as well as the rest of the world, with the advent of the internet and because of the proliferation of quacks, New Age cults, religious medical missions, irresponsible alternative medics, and intellectually lazy scientists and modern physicians. We have to do something about it. I think the best solution is an adult scientific literacy drive. For modern physicians and scientists most developed countries have now imposed mandatory continuing medical and scientific education, and refresher courses. We need something similar at a more elementary level for the general public, and especially, for journalists, politicians, activists and anti-scientific folk in the educational field. But there is still the question of the stubborn vocal and active members of the various supernatural, political, alternative medical, and quackery-based cults/missions who are relentless about overstepping their field of expertise, as well as the bounds of rationality and common sense. One can either try to rehabilitate them or leave them alone, as long as they are not a threat to public health and safety. A minimally scientifically literate adult population would cultivate the sense to ignore them and relegate them to the fringes of our society, where they belong. Cheers, Santosh

[Goanet] Where are the Goans at IFFI
Hi guys, Just took a stroll down the promenade at Campal. Could not spot many Goans. The stalls were definitely not Goan. One got food from other States but nothing from Goa. The only four Goan fools I spotted were the clowns, the usual carnival khapri ani Khapul'lem. There is nothing Goan about IFFI and nothing for Goans in it. It is just one of the opportunities for ghattis to visit Goa at government cost and booze as mushc as possible. That is why all the praise for Goa. One peg and everything is shinning like 'India shinning' campaign of NDA. During the first IFFI in Goa, after a couple of pegs one guy wanted to clone a hundred Parrikar's and put them in all States to organise such an IFFI. -Soter D'Souza

We had our own Clubs, in Nairobi, from almost the inception of Colony; the G.I. (Goan Institute) R.G.I. Railway Goan Institute and the Goan Gymkhana. The Colonial masters were well aware of 'Goans'. I worked in Saudi for many years and the indians were correctly called 'Al Hindi' i.e. pertaining or belonging to India, similarly once when I was stopped by a traffic cop, he asked me if I was 'Al Hindi' when my Iquama was checked it was 'Al Britannia' The perjorative was probably when Arabs disdainfully refered to Indians as 'Al Hindi' meaning people of no consequence. Today the slit is down the neck .What these ladies want to show I cannot understand. You go for a wedding you see these Mahesh bhatt type of film dresses and one wonders whether you are watching Priyanka Chopra, Bipasa Basu or Malika sharavat or Mandira Bhedi. Imagine a bride going to the alter with a top deep neck that she cannot even bend. Imagine everyone's eyes are on the bride or the bridesmaid and one sees malika sharawat there what are you trying to show ?There must be a dress code where ever you go. I have seen married women mother of two dressing indecently. They do not like male eyes to be set on them but why do you dress in such a fashion ? Sometimes the sunday Mass is all fashionable. Very tight pants that will reveal the world what type of undergarment you are wearing. Sometimes we come for mass in skin tight T shirts with rubbish written on it. Sometimes you have no neck at all. Why can't parents teach their children decent things and give them instructions on dress code ? Why can't the mothers themselves dress modestly ? are you showing the world that you lack in modesty and that you belong to the crazy family of idiots ? albert de souza _ New Windows 7: Find the right PC for you. Re: [Goanet] Where are the Goans at IFFI
There is little benefit to Goans from this waste of Goan taxpayer money. We are told that Goans want to benefit from India but not pay the price of this benefit. I would like for someone to tell us what SPECIFIC benefits Goans derive from India. Here are some of the SPECIFIC terrible costs to Goa by migrant (rich and poor) influx into Goa: 1. Usurpation of Goan land. 2. Land scams by outside mega-builders. Land scams by Goans are bad enough but to that we have to add non-Goan land scams. 3. Destruction of the Goan environment by mining companies. Mining destruction by Goans is horrendous but that is multiplied several fold by outside mining companies. 4. Deterioration of law and order. Not that Goans are saints but the outside multiplier effect compounds the situation. It is not safe for women to walk alone in certain areas. 5. Increased filth a la Bombay. Re: [Goanet] Where are the Goans at IFFI
At the risk of being lynched for taking an entirely unpopular stance: come on guys, this is the INTERNATIONAL Film Festival of INDIA and not the REGIONAL Film Festival of GOA. There should be a limit to the level of parochialism we let ourselves drown in. One guy starts shouting ghantis, ghantis, ghantis and everyone joins in the chorus! I know any number of locals who have joined the IFFI as delegates, and got a chance to see world-class cinema. At the same time that we want reservations for seemingly everything, we have been embarassing ourselves by failing to build or sustain a film culture in Goa itself. Parrikar Co began carnivalising the IFFI in 2004, and now Digu Co have continued, though on a slightly smaller scale! The debate here should be about films, not about people walking on the footpaths or who sells what at which stall. There are a whole lot of questions that could be asked about situating the IFFI at Goa over the past half decade. Is it worth the money spent? Are there too many freebies being doled out at taxpayer expense? Did Inox make a killing on a lax deal, and continue to hit the citizens with its rapacious rates? Are Goans gaining any cinematic skills from the IFFIs? Is Bollywood just calling the shots? What does this festival mean for Goan films -- just subisides for the select few, if anything? Is there corruption in conducting the IFFI? Are the qualifying marks being rigged to bring in a few favourites? Yes, many questions could be asked. But I think taking the debate on a chauvinistic, regionalistic track does a disfavour to the cause of Goa gaining anything substantial out of the IFFI, over which so much money is being spent, garbage generated, and hype created. [Goanet] Goan Convention 2009 - Muscat - Oman
Congratulations to the President Mr. Flynn Delima and the Committee Members of Goan Community of Oman for organizing the Goan Convention in Muscat. It was exceptional and teamwork is commended. Mog, Moipas, Bhorvanso, Khushealkhai ani Ekvott were flowing at the Convention – Let us continue the momentum. I wish to thank the GCO and in particular Mr. Celso Fernandes and Dr. Mario Dsouza for giving me an opportunity to present my views on Banning the Sale of Goan land to Non-Goans and the need of the hour to seek Special Status for Goa. Goans should learn from East Indians/Koli’s mistakes – We should not allow Goa turning into another Bombay. This can be done only through Goa getting a SPECIAL STATUS and Goans stop selling their land. 80% Jobs must be reserved for Goans. A memorandum listing several matters has been handed over to Mr. Faleiro. Xhetham, bhatam, minache dongor, zadam, madamnim bhorlelem amchem Bhangarachem Goeam and fish curry is synonymous to Goa/Goans. Fish: Salmon migrates thousands of miles from their freshwater birthplace/spring to the ocean and return to their birthplace to spawn and most Salmon do not eat after spawning and die near their birthplace. Should we not take example from the Salmon and stop selling our lands and save it for our future generations? Xhetham, bhatam, minache dongor, zadam, mad - Bhangarachem Goeam: The locals in the Amazon are protesting the rapid logging of trees with an aim to protect the forest. If the locals do not stop the tree logging now, the Amazon forest will be wiped out and all that will be left for the locals and their future generations to view is the ecommerce website www.amazon.com. We need to protect our fields, orchards, hills, mountains, greenery, ecology – if not, all that will be left for our future generations to view will be concrete jungles. In the past, in addition to rice, Goans would also cultivate vegetables in the fields and backyards. Fields are sold/abandoned and the vegetable growing practice is stopped. In future due to economic reasons/food shortages it will be necessary to grow our own food - how can we cultivate food without land? With due respect to all Speakers, I believe the presentations made by Prajal Sakhardande,Rajendra Kerkar, Arwin Misquita are eye openers (Land, Language, People Identity, Environment, Heritage, Culture, History, etc) . Non Resident Goans (NRG) should be made aware of the matters affecting Goa and these presentations should be made in the Gulf/Other Countries for the NRG’s awareness, whenever the opportunity arises. I suggest the above named should arrange to upload such information/presentation on the internet through a website or create (if not created) special website for the causes. NRGs shall extend support for such causes. I had the opportunity to attend two previous conventions and wish to attend more in future but Muscat Convention will remain close to my heart because through Mr. Vivek Araujo who had come all the way from Malawi, I got in touch with my friend Agnelo Pereira in Lilongwe, AFTER 27 YEARS. Thanks Vivek. It was an opportunity to meet/interact with some friends from the Gulf and other delegates from Gulf, Oman and Goa and also opportunity to set my eyes on the face to the email addresses/names (of the various people I would correspond with, talk, or read emails on the Goanet whom I had not met before). Networking foster friendship, make new friends, exchange ideas, build bridges and also promote business. Every speaker either had a message or two or even more messages in their presentations. Mr. Eduardo Faleiro in his wit said democracy has its own luxuries; it may take time to bear fruits of the convention(s). Therefore, networking and expediting with the NRI Commissioner’s Office/Goa Government is mandatory. Every Goan I met had a common focus, common objectives, common goals, common causes – let us do it collectively, let us consolidate, let us join hands and move forward in unison. Let us NRGs give back to Goa in whatever (small/big) way we can. I suggest to all Gulf delegates who attended the Muscat Convention, leaders, Prominent/like minded Goans and heads of Goan Associations in the Gulf to establish a new organization to collectively represent the Gulf Goans at the NRI Commissioner/Government level and christen it “Gulf Alliance of Goan Associations” (GAGA) with an objective to consolidate the ideas/problems. Let the members be a Think Tank and provide new ideas, in particular to create employment opportunities to Goans and also to create employers rather than employees through self employment. GAGA members to interact and meet at least once a year at a mutual location in the Gulf, or, in Goa in December, and annually make a representation to the NRI Commissioner/Chief Minister/etc. with an aim to accomplish GAGA objectives speedily. I think Noronha is part of a deeper phenomenon that afflicts Indian and western society, in a reciprocal manner on the left and the right fringe. He and others of his ilk have a giant persecution complex fueled by various conspiracy theories. In India, it is the persecution of the east by the west, of Indians who stayed behind by Indians who emigrated, of the poor by the rich, of the minorities by the majority, of the powerless by the powerful, of the uneducated by the educated, of religion and tradition by science, of quacks and alternative medics by modern physicians, of communists by capitalists, etc., etc. Noronha tries to squeeze everything he sees to fit within this narrative, which he relentlessly tries to sell through this public forum and other outlets. Contradictory facts do not deter him from this mission. Cheers, Santosh --- On Tue, 11/24/09, marlon menezes goa...@yahoo.com wrote: As Goanet's patron saint, Fred is holier than thou. Re: [Goanet] Should you believe the word 'Goanese' is a pejorativeterm? (Selma Carvalho, Goanet summaries)
Dear Fellow Goans, I believe that the only information about the origin of the word Goanese was given by Irene Heredia many years ago. In this age of egalitarianism it is consider improper to use words to differentiate groups of people according to their place in society as determined by their nature of their occupation and work. I believe that Hardy was the first to coin this word and used it to differentiate between those who served as Cook and Stewards and general hands on the British Merchant Navy. No goan with highly cultivated culinary skills was allowed to use the word Chef. This was also applied in East Africa where Goans were CHEFS to the Governor's Household but called Cooks.. Please check this about Hardy' s writing as my memory could be playing tricks because of my love affair with Al Zehimer. I suspect that this word was coined by those who felt that all Asians were either Chinese or Japanese.- Hence Goanese. The British I believe used the word Goan when they held positions either within the Civil Service or the Railways Services. This is evident that the Railway Goan Institute used the word Goan not Goanese. Incidentally the President of this Institute was always a White Man who was appointed not elected. However, the Vice-President was always a Goan who was elected together with the committee to administer the running of the Institutes. Similarly Goan Gymkhana.- This was a happy mix of democracy and Patronage!! Warm regards Albert Da Cruz --- Read all Goanet messages at: http://lists.goanet.org/pipermail/goanet-goanet.org/ ---

[Goanet] Goan/Indian attitude to dirt/filth
Which are the deeper reasons which can not be ignored? Arre baba, we Goans are living in a failed rule for the past 5 decades. The current ruler has only commericial interests in Goa. Do not worry about chinese pollution. BC Not what can we do but there are deeper reasons which can't be ignored. Was London always a paragon of cleanliness? And how did China manage it -- I mean to clean (and now pollute itself on a mega scale)? FN

The sad part now is that we Goans are outnumbered by outsiders and there is nothing one can do about it. No one is bothered about the rising prices of essential products which are soaring out of reach of the common man. Neither can they solve the garbage problem which is the biggest menace to plague our state, nor can they bring down crime rates due to political interference. In the present scenario, we do seem to be heading towards the end of the world as portrayed in the movie 2012. *FRANCIS A SOARES, St Cruz* -- Please post your comments on my Blog: http://goanidentity.blogspot.com/ Please also see below: 1. [Goanet] WBAI Board Candidate Arun Aguiar Sings for a Revolution
People, The visual world is certainly a minefield, and I do not mean abstraction, leave alone my practice of extreme abstraction. But in all gracious interaction, something may be gleaned and/or learned. The button Aguiar points to as Lenin, in the video, is of John Lennon = IMAGINE. Observe carefully, and view large. That is Arun in his own inimitable manner. No cause for sadness. Perhaps those who know Arun Aguiar (to some degree) may agree, as he puts it -- he has no axe to grind whatsoever. Basically this is another one of those matchless Goans -- a kokopelli -- and a huge presence to boot. He knows his plays, and is the one being playful. I have known him for years. Oh, and yes -- has two lovely daughters (That is my unabashed observation). No further observations from me. venantius j pinto Message: 5 Date: Tue, 24 Nov 2009 07:08:43 -0800 (PST) From: Mario Goveia mgov...@sbcglobal.net To: goanet@lists.goanet.org Subject: [Goanet] WBAI Board Candidate Arun Aguiar Sings for a Revolution Date: Mon, 23 Nov 2009 13:25:55 -0500 From: Venantius J Pinto venantius.pi...@gmail.com WBAI Board Candidate Sings for a Revolution Arun Aguiar is a Goan. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L5yeyy-6uLQ HIs father was Prof.

[Goanet] North Goa in 2nd slot on breast cancer
North Goa in 2nd slot on breast cancer NEW DELHI, NOV 24 North Goa follows Chandigarh in the dubious distinction of being highest in district-wise incidence of breast cancer in the country. Delhi has the highest age adjusted rate (AAR) among States in the country on the incidence of breast cancer, as per the National Cancer Registry of the Indian Council for Medical Research (ICMR), according to a report in Indian Express, Chandigarh edition. However, the district-wise comparisons of minimum age adjusted incidence rates (MAARs) shows that at least four districts - led by Chandigarh and followed by North Goa, Aizawl in Mizoram and Panchkula in Haryana - had higher MAARs than that of Delhi. This shows that North Goa has a much higher incidence of breast cancer compared to most other districts in the country. To tackle this situation, the Chandigarh administration is to procure a vehicle costing approximately Rs 1 crore with in-built facilities for mammography, collecting samples for FNAC and an automatic processor for development of the mammography film, operated by a team of medical persons as well as motivated women, possibly a non-govermental organization (NGO) of breast cancer survivors. Goa has no plans yet to tackle the situation. http://oheraldo.in/pagedetails.asp?nid=30328cid=2

[Goanet] Tyranny of Mega Housing Projects effecting Goans (appeared in Herald)
Tyranny of Mega-Housing Projects Gated communities are foreign to our culture. They are creating a new class system, says PETER FERNANDES The elected representatives are making a mockery of our civilisation. These leaders are nurturing a culture that dehumanises our citizenry, making them nonentities and dashing helpless people against brick walls of stupidity. This is clear, as the amendment to the Panchayati Raj Act 1994 is approved. What an irony! ‘Mega-Housing Projects’ are determined to rule our villages and towns. This monster is very powerful, as money is flowing from every quarter to silence the voice and slaughter the will of the people. Still worse is the demise of our beautiful and sublime environment. Nature at the moment is silently absorbing the wrath of greed and muscle power. However, the natural world ultimately will have the last laugh; only it will be too late for the majority of people to laugh with nature. At the very outset, we must grasp the nature of gated communities. They are foreign to our culture, and appendices to our civilisation. They create a sense of elitism, and those within keep apart from the rest of the society. They are creating a new class system. Let history be our teacher at this crucial juncture, to reinforce a valuable lesson. Never forget the great generations who lived before us, who fought and gave their lives to emancipate the oppressed and to abolish segregation, in order to establish an egalitarian society. Why are we reversing the vision of our forefathers? Perhaps they were ‘fools’ to envision such a concept, of building a just and happy society for all to live in as neighbours. Gated communities dismiss whatever happens outside their walls. For them, it is of no consequence. More often than not, they turn away from participating in social activities, especially to help the less fortunate. The evil of gated communities is that they suck in all the valuable resources of a place and, without a twinge of guilt, they unleash their filth and waste outside their walls, keeping their lives insulated and isolated, as they live a fantasy life in a paradise usurped from the locals. ‘Mega-Housing Projects’ are a source of gleeful satisfaction for our politicians. Come what may, they are not concerned about the repercussions from such evil schemes, as long as their pockets are filled with unaccounted money received from the builders. To protect builders and their interests, our leaders are breeding gangs. The growing number of gangs in Goa is a very frightening scenario. On top of that, our police forces conduct their duties at the behest of the politicians. This is a double-edged sword hanging over the ordinary citizens, who feel the pressure, then yield rather than fight what seems to them to be a losing battle. Consequently, this ill-gotten gain, from the builders to our politicians, comes to the surface as elections near. Votes are bought for five hundred to a thousand rupees each. Without realising that this booty came from evil devices, naive citizens also partake in the merriment of our politicians. In the not-too-distant past, the price of land in Goa was within reach of the common man. Today, to purchase a parcel of land is a distant dream for the citizens. Those Goans who remained in Goa and never left to find work are denied the dream of owning a home in their own birthplace. Nonetheless, many of our youngest have left Goa, and they toil in distant lands to fulfil their dreams. Sadly, when they try to reach out and touch their dream, it is pushed farther and farther away from them by our greedy politicians, who work hand-in-glove with these builders. The thought of not being able to fulfill their dream has brought despair and disappointment to the lives of so many young Goans working overseas. This faulty vision of our corrupt politicians has put a heavy weight on the people, and they see themselves almost crushed, yet no politician will lift a finger to lighten their burden. Goa’s infrastructure has been languishing for attention and upgradation for decades now, yet the cry is not heard by those in positions of power. Every year, it seems to have become a proud moment when we publicise that we have again broken the record of people dying on our roads. Mother Goa cries bitterly: “How long will you keep killing my children on the streets? My children have shed enough blood; will someone take notice? Even weddings in Goa turn tragic.” The cry of Mother Goa continues: “Why do you want to keep my children thirsty when I have enough water to provide for them? Perhaps you have invited more than I can sustain. And, if that is not enough, you are stripping me of my beauty, and throwing your waste all over me. I smell the stench and it upsets me terribly. Besides, the electricity continues to play hide and seek; yet the Mega-Housing Projects mushroom everywhere with each passing day.
[Goanet] Cartoon exhibition by Alexyz from Nov 29
Cartoon exhibition by Alexyz from Nov 29 Wednesday, 25 November 2009 01:51 PANAJI: The 3rd annual event in memory of Dr Pedro Cabral Adao, former consul general of Portugal in Goa, will be inaugurated by Rev J Loiola Pereira, secretary to the Archbishop of Goa, at Art Chamber, Galeria de Belas Artes, Gauravaddo, Calangute, on November 29, at 7 p.m. Alexyz, the irrepressible cartoonist, will be out again with another rare exhibition - Laughter, The Jest Best Medicine. The exhibition comprises Alexyzs cartoons and caricatures relating to laughter. Thereafter the show will remain open for the art loving public till December 10, from 10 a.m. to 7.30 p.m. Says Alexyz, In India, the importance of laughter is as old as the Himalayas. Our renowned yogis conceived the legendary Hasya (laughter) Yoga concept to maintain a truly healthy mind, body and soul. However, laughter as a therapy and medicine received a cracker of life after Norman Cousins (1915-1990), a popular USA author, professor and world peace advocate, who cured himself with laughter when doctors told him he had just six months to live. Thereafter he wrote the bestseller Anatomy of an Illness, which has inspired millions of people. Laughter clinics, clubs and laughologists have since sprouted in almost every country. My exhibition is put up with the hope that it will tickle the funny bone of our Goenkars and to look at laughter seriously. The 50-odd exhibits comprises cartoons and caricatures of celebrities, selected for their experiences with laughter, from the year 4 BC to the present times. There will also be a few Alexyz installations on laughter. Besides the show therell be a screening of movies on December 2 and a Festival of Laughter for children on December 5, and for adults on December 6. On December10, there will a meet for all those keen on joining a regular Just for Laughs initiative at Yolandas. Ha ha!
