[Goanet] Hindu Dharmajagruti meeting at Azad Maidan in Panaji on Thursday April 22, 2010

2010-04-24 Thread SHRIKANT BARVE

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GycKANi6Hqkfeature=player_embedded
Hindu Janajagruti Samiti organized a public Hindu Dharmajagruti meeting
at Azad Maidan in Panaji on Thursday to discuss the protection of Hindu
temples, unification of trustees of the temples in Goa and igniting
pride for Dharma amongst Hindus to unite them.

The gravest attack on the Hindu Dharma today is the declaration of
religious places illegal by the administration. The list of unauthorized
religious places brought out by the government includes ancient temples that
are 350 to 500 years old. In this context, the HJS has launched a
state wide campaign in this regard. As a part of this campaign, the HJS
has conducted meetings at Pedne, Mapusa, Panaji, Ponda, Margao,
Curchorem, Canacona, Vasco, Bicholim, etc. and has met with trustees of
various temples of Goa. Signature campaigns have also been conducted at
various places in Goa.

Appeal to form a committee giving representation to main three religion
in Goa in each Village.

[Goanet] OPINION: Are we Comfort Women and Comfort Men?

2010-04-24 Thread Goanet News Service

Are we Comfort Women and Comfort Men?

by Dr Sabina Martins
martinssab...@gmail.com

Some days back, I got a call from the American Centre, stating that in
the month of April, tentatively, American navy personnel would be coming
down to Goa. These men would like to do some social service such as
painting offices of NGO’s or any other work. I was asked whether the
organizations I belonged to would like to use their services.

“Why should the American navy men want to do work for local NGO’s” I
asked? “To build good will” I was told.

One mostly hears of gross human rights violations, where soldiers call
the shots, all over the world, whether it is Iraq or Afghanistan. So,
perhaps this was an image building exercise. Rapes are common where
soldiers are called in, in the name of insurgency, terrorism or naxalism.

But why should the American soldiers come to Goa?

The answer came from the Murmugao Port Trust Chairman in the local
newspapers ‘for Rest and Recreation’. The port which is a Central
government undertaking is all set to provide infrastructural facilities
so that the American navy ships can berth.

Recreation for soldiers sounded warning bells. It brought back horror
stories that I had heard at the UN World Conference from Fillipino
women, who were used as “comfort women” by soldiers. In Goa too, we had
an incident of sailors running amuck in Vasco, molesting women for
‘recreation’.

They come in slowly and surely, like they did in Fillipines. Felicidade
lived to tell her story.

One day in 1943, three truckloads of Japanese soldiers visited
Felicidade's class. Her Japanese teacher had organised the students to
perform songs and dances for the visiting soldiers. Felicidade, then
only 14, was made to sing. The following day, her teacher told the class
that the soldiers were so impressed with the students' performance that
they wanted to reward them. Felicidade was identified as one who was to
be given an award, and later that day two soldiers arrived to fetch her.
Thinking that there might be other students there, Felicidade went
along. But when she got there, she did not see any of her school
friends. She became worried and asked to leave. They told her that her
gift was coming.

A few hours later, five Japanese soldiers arrived. Three of them were in
uniform and two in civilian clothes. One of them jumped onto her,
catching her by the arms and forcing her down onto the ground. Then they
took turns to rape her. She was raped continuously for 3 days and was
sent home when she fell ill. Her parents hid her, as her elder sister
too was taken and had died in the ”comfort homes”.

Sexual slavery with official patronage is now an engine to drive
economic growth. Goa has become the victim state. The economic model is
coming in piece meal so that we do not see the entire picture and revolt.

The Government of India in collaboration with the Government of Goa have
charted out for Goa to be ”Comfort Women” and “Comfort Men” to fill
their coffers.

Is it surprising then, that there is a beeline to set up casinos in Goa
and the slashing of casino fees? Or,the move to start online gambling?

Is it suprising then, to see the open advertisements of female escort
services, offering all kinds of pleasure by local, Indian and foreign
women? Or, the foreign women being brought in city hotels to sing and
dance in bare minimum clothing to be ogled at? Or, the increasing number
of massage parlours in Goa

Is it surprising then that the Tourism department is promoting wine
festivals even on Republic day or permitting alcohol sale outside
licensed liquor outlets? Or, the Fests that bring in thousands at a time
to party with no restrictions on addictive substances.

Is it surprising then, on a website, a five star residential complex
with a Casino is being advertised by Utopia properties in Quelossim,
Cortalim, in the mangroves, lining Zuari river. The advertisement claims
that this residential complex is surrounded by water and that there will
be yachts and luxury boats to enter this area.

This is yet another blatant violation of eco sensitive zone where
construction is not permitted. Yet another mega project, which will
adversely affect the demography and identity of the place. Yet another
gated community, where locals who predominantly belong to the Schedule
Tribe will be alienated from their own land.

In the name of Development for the common people, local resources are
being ursurped to cater to the pleasures of the rich, with the promise
that the benefits of development will trickle down. Verna industrial
estate came up on part of the land belonging to the tribals. What
finally trickled down to them were hundred odd menial jobs, which they
would have got anyway, anywhere in Goa without parting with their land.

Casino in this tribal dominated area will sponge on the locals, to
provide comfort women and comfort men. Is this the kind of

Dear Mr Colaço
You wrote - Nuttin will happen for the good of Goa if Goans do not
challenge the current regime imposed upon Goans since 61. Petitions will
only have superficial effects.

Did you read the petition before you concluded that the effect will be
superficial?
In any case, superficial effects are better than no effects at all
besides nothing will happen if Goans cannot even take the trouble to sign a
petition and show they care. If they cannot even do as much as sign a
petition, they will never challenge anybody or anything, leave alone the
politicians they vote into power election after election.and instead of
acting, they will continue sitting in their balcão and bars pontificating
and criticizing and possibly blocking and preventing others from trying to
do something positive for Goa.

Besides, the petition is part of a number of things that are being done by
some of us who care about Goa. If Goans wake up and help just a little by
signing, we are likely to achieve much more than you thinkI know we can
and we will do it. You can only gain by singning, even if you don't believe
it is going to be as effective as you think... until we try, we will never
know how effective anything can be.

[Goanet] HINDUTVAVADIS - JIHADIS - MAOISTS - NAXALITIES - CLERGY - MISSIONARIES - POLITICIANS..

2010-04-24 Thread marcus dmello
 Sir,

Maybe the Maoists Naxalities are waging a war against the Indian state
because they don’t want the Government/Politicians/Corporates to exploit the
tribals and tribal lands.

But unlike the Maoists and Naxalities who are brave enough to fight with the
heavily armed security forces the Jihadis ( LeT/Jaish/Simi/Huji/etc) and the
Hindutvavadis ( rss/vhp/bajrangdal/shivsena/etc) are COWARDS and their
target is only the unarmed civilians.

An ideal situation should have been for the Jihadis and the Hindutvavadis to
target each others leaders, financers, cadres, offices, training camps but
as mentioned above both the jihadis and hindutvavadis are cowards and their
targets will always remain innocent civilians and most of these innocent
civilians who will die during communal riots and bomb-blasts will be Poor
hindus, muslims and christians.

Exploitation of workers, agricultural labourers, peasants, women, adivasis,
dalits, tribals, nomads, balutedars, etc is rampant in India; Politicians
irrespective of which Political party they belong to are filling the
Indian/Swiss bank accounts of their familiy members and relatives as fast as
they can from bribes received from the builder/corporate/trader/sez lobby -
[politicians cannot take the risk of filling their own bank accounts and
prefer benami accounts - As long as the real incomes, wealth and funding of
politicians remain opaque, governance will continue to suffer and democracy
will be rendered more often on the liability side in the balance sheet of
development]; Corruption is rampant in every Government Dept.
Muncipalities; but for the Jihadis and Hindutvavadis these issues are
irrelevant. The only issues relevant for the Jihadis and Hindutvavadis is of
harassing unarmed civilians.

The Hindutvavadis keep fooling everyone that the Congress Party is appeasing
Minorities i.e. Muslims Christians. If the Congress Party is appeasing the
minorities then how come it is only the majority Hindu community who are
getting all the Government jobs, facilities, land, housing, etc. Only idiots
will believe what the Hindutvavadis say. People who are intellectuals very
well know that the Congress Party was/is only interested in the votes of the
minorities.

The Christian Missionaries in India are doing an excellent job in serving
the poor the sad part is they serve only poor non-christians and not poor
christians. The logic is simple a poor christian is already a christian so
why waste money and resources in serving a poor christian.

Excluding the Mangalorean and Malyalee Christians who have economically
progressed because they had good knowledgeable mangalorean/malyalee clergy
to guide them, all the other Christian communities in India did not have any
good knowledgeable clergy within their respective community to guide them
due to which they are struggling with unemployment, poverty and alcoholism.

Since the lay Christians or laity in India don’t have any oratory or
leadership or warrior or political skills the only place we lay Christians
bark is on the internet.

A delegation of Goan Welfare Society comprising of President and Treasurer
along with the President of Goan Overseas Association met with the outgoing
Indian Airlines Manager, Mr Surender Kumar and the incoming Manager, Mr.
Rambabu, and presented a memorandum for their evaluation and due consideration.

The pressing issues were discussed at length, mainly concerning: 1- Leaving the
checked-in baggage behind due to overload/overbooking and the inconvenience
caused to the passengers. 2- Rescheduling of the Thursday early morning
flight to Friday early morning, to suit the weekend travelers. 3- Arrangements
for providing connection on Saturday flight via BOM, by checking the baggage in
Goa direct to Kuwait, so as to avoid the hassles of carrying the baggage and
rechecking the same in Mumbai. 4- Parking of the Aircraft in Kuwait far away
from the Aero Bridge, resulting in inconvenience to passengers. 5-
Deteriorating services and limitations of the beverages served on board. 6-
Discrimination towards passengers who buy the tickets in India, by way of
lowering baggage allowances on return flights as compared to passengers who buy
their tickets in Kuwait. 7. Air fares charged to Goa sector as compared to
Chenai/Kochin etc. 8- Request for change in aircrafts so as to provide
better facilities to passengers mainly with regard to in flight entertainment
services, etc.

The delegation impressed upon the Management of Indian Airlines/Air India to
find remedial solutions to the issues raised to improve the services towards
the passengers flying to and from Kuwait/Goa/Kuwait on their direct and
indirect flights. In the course of the discussion both the Managers were
impressed by the manner in which the grievances were presented and assured the

seriously looking into the genuine issues raised. We do hope things will turn
out to be better for both the sides i.e the Airlines and the passengers, in the
mutual interest of promoting business on this sector, in the near future.

 only have superficial effects.

Did you read the petition before you concluded that the
 effect will be
 superficial?
In any case, superficial effects are better than no effects
 at all
besides nothing will happen if Goans cannot even take the
 trouble to sign a
petition and show they care. If they cannot even do as much
 as sign a
petition, they will never challenge anybody or
 anything,  leave alone the
politicians they vote into power election after
 election.and instead of
acting, they will continue sitting in their balcão and
 bars pontificating
and criticizing and possibly blocking and preventing others
 from trying to
 do something positive for Goa.

Besides, the petition is part of a number of things that
 are being done by
some of us who care about Goa.  If Goans wake up and
 help just a little by
signing, we are likely to achieve much more than you
 thinkI know we can
and we will do it.  You can only gain by singning,
 even if you don't believe
it is going to be as effective as you think... until we
 try, we will never
know how effective anything can be.

[Goanet] GOA: International Symposium on Marine Turtles comes to India and South Asia for the First Time

International Symposium on Marine Turtles comes to India and South
Asia for the First Time

Goa, April 24th, 2010 - The 30th Annual Symposium on Sea Turtle
Biology and Conservation begins this Saturday April 24 and continues
till April 30 2010 in Goa, India. It brings together a diverse range
of participants from around the world, including students, academics,
activists and conservationists. Over 700 individuals from 70 plus
countries across the world will be attending, making it one of the
largest international conferences on ecology and conservation to be
held in India. Some of the best known biologists and conservationists
in the field will be present.

The symposium is being held in the South Asian region for the first
time in its 30 year history. The theme, 'The World of Turtles', draws
attention to the coastal, near-shore and oceanic ecosystems that
marine turtles inhabit and use, while also focusing on the human
communities (particularly coastal fishing communities) who interact
with marine turtles'

“We wanted to zoom out for a birds eye view of the world of turtles;
the many ecosystems and habitats they use including sandy beaches,
seagrass meadows, coral reefs and open seas” said Dr. Kartik Shanker,
from the Centre for Ecological Sciences, Indian Institute of Science,
and President of the International Sea Turtle Society. “We wanted to
draw attention to the human communities and livelihoods issues in
coastal areas and lay the foundation for a more practical and
inclusive conservation approach” he added.

The programme also includes two key regional events: a South Asia mini
symposium which will overview research from within the region as well
as a Fisheries Forum which will serve to foster greater engagement
between conservationists and fisheries representatives.

“This is an excellent opportunity for organisations and researchers
from across the region to interact, collaborate and discuss various
issues related to coastal and marine resources and their conservation,
from the perspective of marine turtles as global flagship species” Dr.
Shanker said.

The symposium will also be used to garner support for several public
petitions on issues of importance to marine turtles and their
habitats, including one asking that ports and large infrastructural
projects are kept at least 25 km away from critical marine turtle
nesting habitats.

The symposium is being organised by the International Sea Turtle
Society, in partnership with the Government of India’s Ministry of
Environment and Forests (MoEF), Centre for Ecological Sciences/Indian
Institute of Science (IISc), National Centre for Biological Sciences
(NCBS), Madras Crocodile Bank Trust (MCBT), Foundation for Ecological
Research, Learning and Advocacy (FERAL) and Dakshin Foundation.

While terrestrial conservation has so far taken centre stage, this
symposium is a landmark event for marine related issues. “The ISTS
would like to thank the Ministry of Environment and Forests,
Government of India and the Government of Goa for funding and support
of this endeavour.” concluded Dr. Shanker. Shri. Jairam Ramesh,
Minister for Environment and Forests is expected to deliver a keynote
address on 'A Seascape Approach to Marine Conservation in South Asia'.

2010-04-24 Thread George Pinto
World Cup football/soccer is almost here you can get involved with the
excitement and help a good cause at the same time.

I am personally organizing a fund-raising contest to benefit Goa Sudharop and
Goan Chitra museum. After prizes, potentially USD $980 (approximately 44,000
rupees) will be raised. Goa Sudharop will donate the money to benefit the
incredible Goan Chitra museum which showcases Goan culture, see
http://www.goachitra.com/museum.html.

Here is how the contest works and is open to anyone. 64 tickets will be sold.
Only USD $20 per entry; there are 32 teams participating in the World Cup, let
us try and get 64 entries i.e. two entries per team. Winners of the World Cup
(two tickets) get USD $100 each and runner-up of the World Cup (two tickets)
get USD $50 each.

After confirmation that all 64 tickets have been sold, I will sit down and do a
draw from a hat and assign a World Cup team to each ticket. Please note you
cannot pick a particular team, a team will be assigned to each ticket by random
drawing.

To buy a ticket through PayPal, click on the DONATE NOW button at
www.goasudharop.org (home page, bottom left hand side). Each ticket is USD $20.
Or you can mail a check for the number of your tickets payable to GOA

I am afraid Fr. Ivo is confused about Dana Ullman. He appears to believe that
this individual is a qualified homeopath and charges $40 for the first 10
minute and $3 per minute thereafter, for doctor-patient type homeopathic
consultation and advice on the phone. This is obviously false. Dana Ullman is
not a homeopath. He is charging this money for answering theoretical questions
about homeopathy and referring you to a homeopath on the phone. He is acting as
a telephonic information service and a middleman between a doctor and a patient.

But even if Ullman was a qualified homeopath, it is important for Fr. Ivo to
know that it is not appropriate for a doctor to charge money for consultations
on the phone.

Furthermore, Ullman cannot be referred to as Dr. Ullman merely on the basis
that he has books on homeopathy. One has to be appropriately educated and
qualified to have that prefix attached to his/her name. Anybody can buy books
on homeopathy or write a book listing all the homeopathic drugs because there
is not much understanding or
background knowledge that is required to do that. That is also why
anybody can obtain a mail order degree in homeopathy.

Fr. Ivo wrote:

Dr.Gilbert will be quite honest in his work, as he is honest in the
assessment of modern medicine.

Regarding Gilbert, he has contributed nothing to this discussion after
simply providing a link to the Huffington Post article. If in providing that
link entitled How scientific is modern medicine really?, he was claiming that
modern medicine was not really scientific, as opposed to homeopathy and other
healing rituals, then Gilbert would be anything but honest on this matter.

Fr. Ivo and Admin Noronha will not understand this because of their scientific
illiteracy, and unfamiliarity with modern medicine, but Dr. Gilbert ought to
know that modern medicine is eminently scientific because it strictly follows
the self-critical scientific method of falsification by observation or
experimentation, and it rests on the solid foundations of basic hard sciences,
namely physics, chemistry and biology, fully consistent with all their
well-established principles.

Homeopathy, on the other hand, is unscientific because it does not
follow the self-critical method of science, and is completely at odds
with the foundational principles of all the hard sciences. For
example, it holds the superstitious belief that more dilute a solution
is the more potent it is, and that the most potent solution is the one
that does not have a single molecule of active drug dissolved in the solvent
water. Another superstition that it believes is that water has memory, and that
it remembers all the substances that were once dissolved in it.

Homeopathy is entirely based on personal faith, superstitious beliefs and
subjective feelings. That is why people from the various faith traditions such
as religious priests are drawn towards it, as is clear from what Fr. Ivo had
stated in his earlier post. It relies entirely on anecdotes, testimonials,
grandmother's stories and urban legends, just like astrology, ufology and
superstitious mysticism.

Unlike Fr. Ivo and Admin Noronha, Dr. Gilbert ought to also recognize that what
Ullman did was simply rail against doctors, hospitals and pharmaceutical
companies because they charge too much money for their services and products,
which is exactly what he himself is doing on his homeopathy promotion website.
His diatribe also involved an attack on doctors because they point out that
homeopathy and other alternative rituals are unscientific, in some cases
tantamount to quackery. Despite the title of his article, Ullman could not tell
us why modern medicine was not scientific, and what its limitations were from
the scientific
standpoint. The few statistical claims he made were blatant falsehoods
meant to deceive the readers. I have already pointed out a couple of
these deceptions. I point out another one below:

QUOTE
Although we are commonly told that we are living longer than ever now,
this is simply a clever, even tricky, use of statistics. The fact of
the matter is that there has been a considerable reduction in deaths
during the first five years of life ... and this reduction in deaths
has resulted primarily from a medicinal agent called soap, not from
the use of any specific conventional pharmaceutical agent.

[Goanet] Sister Rani Maria

2010-04-24 Thread Ivo da C.Souza

Dear Goanetters,
You have heard about Sister Rani Maria. Please, read more.
Regards.
Fr.Ivo

From CSF: Sister Rani's murderer now says, Christians are India's hope

Samandar Singh killed a nun in 1995. After that, he converted to
Christianity and today he is a different man. He helps Tribals and for him
Sister Rani's family has become his own. Sadly, he agrees that a climate of
anti-Christian hatred is currently sweeping across India. He urges his
compatriots to see the truth in the presence of missionaries in the country.

Madhya Pradesh, Udaya Nagar: I accept full responsibility for my heinous
murder of Sr Rani Maria. I cannot say that I was instigated, because my own
hands stabbed her repeatedly and for this I will regret my actions till the
day I die, Samandar Singh told AsiaNews. He is the man who on 25 February
1995 stabbed to death Sister Rani Maria. The diocese of Indore, where she
worked, has ended the diocesan leg of the inquiry into her death. Now the
Vatican will have to decide whether she died a martyr of the faith or not.
Whatever the outcome of that will be, Sister Rani Maria has already
accomplished a miracle. Her assassin has repented and has become a member of
her family. In my own small way, he said, I try to follow her example,
helping those who are less fortunate than me, like Tribal Christians and all
those who are marginalised. After his arrest in connection with the nun's
murder, he was tried and sentenced to prison, where he spent 11 years.
During that time, his wife divorced him and his first son died.

Behind prison walls, he began plotting how he could take revenge against the
man who pushed him to kill the nun. But he also received a visit from
another nun, Sister Selmi Paul, who happened to be the murdered nun's own
sister. She hugged him and called him brother. He was profoundly touched by
it, so much so that from this embrace his journey of repentance began. He
gave up plans for revenge and accepted the sorrow caused by the murder.
Eventually, Samandar was released because of a petition signed by Sister
Rani's family, the provincial of the Clarist congregation and the bishop of
Indore. When his release was slow in coming, a delegation went to see the
local governor to plead his case. Only you Christians can truly forgive,
the latter said. You are a great example. Go, I shall do all I can to get
him released.

Once he was free again, Samandar began to treat Sister Rani's family as his
own. I regularly visit her tomb, he said. For me, it is like a sanctuary
of peace and strength. I want everyone to know that Christians work to
make India great. The missionaries give us hope through their service, which
is to make us a strong and independent people. He does realise though that
India's rightwing hate Christians. Before they drove me to kill, I heard so
many hate-filled lies about the missionaries and Christians. They used to
tell me that Christians converted people through tricks and that their work
with the poor was only for show. Now however I can say without a doubt that
the missionaries do nothing but work and help the poor and the marginalised.
They have not secret design, other than serve God.

Sister Rani Maria, martyr of the faith: the conversion of her assassin

Fifteen years after the martyrdom of the religious, murdered for her
commitment to the poor and for her Christian faith, the priest who oversaw
the diocesan investigation tells AsiaNews life about her life and her work.
The conversion of her murderer, a Hindu farmer, due to her intercession.
Udaya Nagar (AsiaNews) - Sister Rani Maria, who, fifteen years ago became a
martyr for the faith that led her to always help the poorest of the poor,
encourages us to move forward. Her example of life and death are a stimulus
for us who are still her today, we have a powerful intercessor before the
Lord.

This is what Fr Cherian, spokesman for the Diocese of Indore and director of
the local society for social services who accompanied the religious in her
humanitarian work and who oversaw the collection of documents for her
beatification, tells AsiaNews. The diocesan inquiry on the life and works of
the religious was completed two years ago. The results are now been studied
by the Vatican. The priest today presents his testimony on the life of the
religious. Sister Rani Maria While working for the people and for the
Lord-she sacrificed her life. Like Jesus, she died on the Cross -while she
was faithfully and selflessly carrying her work among the people among the
people. Sr Rani Maria's life and her death has become an inspiration and
hope for us- to continue to do good, to work and serve the people even at
the cost of ones life- to be another Christ and this has brought graces for
us.

The priests of Indore Diocese have a powerful intercessor and this year is a
grace filled year as it is the Year for priests. While I was deeply pained
by her murder, we

Last Sunday, we reviewed some Goan IAF officers who died in service. Let's now
look at those who retired or are serving, some decorated for gallantry or
service.
Names are arranged first by rank, then by seniority. Where seniority is not
known,
they are listed alphabetically under the sub-heading, Others.

We checked Gallantry awards (in war and in peace) last time. Service awards are:
Vishist Sena Medal, Ati Vishist Seva Medal and Param Vishist Seva Medal. These
are used in abbreviated form. Citations, if available, are in quote marks and
within
brackets, but condensed from the original.
