Re: [Goanet] Nadia's divorce proceedings expose Mickky

2010-06-08 Thread Valmiki Faleiro

Dear Jim,

From all accounts, Sonia was/is a good teacher. Her deceased husband,

Francis, was a volleyball friend from Loutulim. Unfortunately, after she was
widowed, she encountered another Francisco, a.k.a. Mickky. The rest, as they
say, is history, yet unfolding in Goa.

Incidentally, the Times of India (Goa edition) carried a snippet in today's
Balcao Banter column of a very young boy watching TV news on this story.
His parents wondered aloud why the dead woman kept rat poison with her
toiletries. Junior explained, Nadia must have known Mickky was also known
as Mickey Mouse.

Incidentally again, Sonia was not the only hottie at Loyola-Margao. She had,
I believe, competition. A certain teacher, Miss Figueiredo, was the apple of the
eye of a certain Principal, Rev. Castellino, SJ. Loyolites from the era on this
mail list may like to throw more light on this. I cannot -- I had been kicked
out
both from the Loyola boarding and day school in my penultimate year for a grave
act of indiscipline in April-1971.

I speak to my sister, who is married to a gentleman from Loutolim, almost every other day. But we never brought this topic, until
this morning.

She started by asking, Did you know Nadia's mother? She ia a school teacher at Loyola's? I immediately knew, she was talking
about the dead girl and her mother from her husband's village.

At first, I said, I don't think so. But I was curious to know what her mother's
name was and she said Sonia.

Damn! How could I have not known her! She was my class teacher in grade 6 and
taught me for at least three more years after that.

Suddenly, I felt very sad and admitted to my sister, that indeed a teacher by that name taught me at Loyola's. But back then I
think she was single and probably went by the last name of D'Sa.

Because of the current situation, people tend to portray the family in bad light, but I am not sure who to believe. It is true
that Sonia, was the hottest young teacher on the staff at the school back in late seventies/early eighties. She was a great
teacher to our class, but some of us were more interested in her physique than the material she taught us. With the manufacture of
testosterone kicking into our systems, we were quite nasty kids back then.

I still can't believe that we are talking about the shy attractive school
teacher and her daughter. What a small world!

[Goanet] Who is responsible?

2010-06-08 Thread pinheiro
This is reference to recent pollution on Goa's beaches due to appearance of tar
balls (blobs of solidified tar). It is quite obvious with this recurring
phenomenon that we in India do not have stringent maritime laws or the
mechanism to implement the feeble laws that are in place. We are now in the
21st century but our maritime laws (just as criminal or civil laws) are of 19th
Century and hence not in sync with the commerce and trade of 21st century. It
is ironical that India is aiming to conquer Space and Moon when we don't even
have control over our Land and Sea.

Goa's economy is directly or indirectly dependent on sea. 70 percent of Goan
population survival depends on how we manage our marine and sea coast
environment. It is depressing to see the State of Goa is not in control of its
land or resources even after gaining Statehood 23 years ago. Marmagoa Port is
under occupation of MPT. Dabolim Airport is under occupation of Navy and
thousand of hacters of land is with the Army. The Forest area is looted and
plundered by illegal mining mafia. The western shoreline in now more of sore
line and under control real estate sharks.

We have MPT whose primary objective seems to mint money by encouraging old
rusted cargo ships to call Marmagoa Port. There are hundreds of ship marooned
off Marmagoa Port some for loading Iron ore and some just idling and
discharging waste into the sea. There is no one to monitor these ships which
spills chemical oil (fuel/lub etc), which result in environmental damage to
life property. Frequently, there is chemical and oily water discharge in the
marine environment which not only pollutes the beaches but also endangers the
marine life. As the port operator it does very little to stop/control any of
the spills/pollution within the territorial waters of Goa.Navy or coast Guard
the guardian of our territorial boundaries is as clue less as MPT and has not
shown any interest in protection of Goa's sea cost.

Oil spills and chemical discharge at high seas by the marooned/passing vessel
must be treated as act of terrorism. If people with arms and ammunition kill
the people so are these ships which kill and endanger the marine life and
destroy biodiversity of the state. In the last decade, the Goa-based NIO has
discovered and explored three wrecks, which includes a 17th century merchant
ship, known to be the oldest underwater wreck traced in the seas off India.
Thanks to government apathy Goa's underwater heritage is gnawed by the rouge
treasure hunters.

If none of these organizations can protect or help the people of Goa of this
menace, why we need them? I hope people of Goa will take resonance of these
facts when they select the next government.

Fred? I am optimistic: Goa is already deep in the rot and there is no
reversing. Trying to save Goa is pessimistic!!

Anyways, wondering which coconut tree your claimed up to get a view of
the impromptu riots that took place in '82?
The reaction to Padre Dessai little protest march was impromptu. No
one organized them, unless that happened a few days later when Rane
with the railways arranged for trains to transport people out (his
baaiko is from the neighbouring state BTW).

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ExDhrelBsmUfeature=related

(so this guy singing is also an pretext to go on a rampage . make
a fast buck for..). Good thinking. Yo, Prince Jakob, aaikotai re (he
did a tiatre on the subject)?

So tell me, if there is a procession in Saligao calling Goas cowards,
you will sit on the balcao and continue smoking your pipe, or what
ever it is you are smoking? Nice to know. Its in the constitution, the
right to protest that is as it is your right to smoke in your balcony.
But then, you are in Bardez and the riots took place in
Salcette/Murmagao. Big difference.

Today the Mangoor slum boasts of a t*mple or two or three (maybe even
a m*sque that loud speakers 'the call' at an unearthly hour), all on
communadade land! Say very constitutional, the right to squat. They
even have a former Chief Minister as their chief guest. How legit.

I know Fr. Dessai from the time he arrived and took up lodgings in the
slum...he came with intentions...school, toilets for the slum
dwellers, etc. He believed Goans were against the 'ghaatis' because
they were afraid to fight their employers. Prior to those days, the
area was from a relatively clean (Mangoor Hill), and grew to be the
first slum in Goa. On communadade land.

Today, a lodging in the slum can change hands for no less than 5-10-15
(take a guess), and there are a few Goan families who have moved there
because they cannot afford to live elsewhere!

As well, around the time Fr.Dessai arrived, the neighbouring convent
even opened its doors to the afternoon free school those living in the
slums, and it continues till date. The person who took a bold step was
a Goan nun born in British Columbia, Kanada. That was unheard of in
those days.

What self-fulfilling prophecy? What Saligao weed did you put in your
smoking pipe?

riots of 1984 or 85 I think.

Fr Kristanand Desai (not Premand) was the name, and, if I recall
right, it was around 1982. The march used
as a pretext to go on a rampage by ideologies and individuals who went
on to make a fast buck for
themselves, get elected to power, play controversial games, etc ...
The march was -- again if I recall
correct -- to ask for a school for the migrant poor to learn in the
language of their choice.

This is part of the Constitutionally-guaranteed educational rights to
minorities, whether religious or
linguistic. Even the Pais deploy the same for some of their
educational institutions in the Udupi-Mangalore
belt, and Konkani communities too have the right to ask for it if they
have the numbers for a classroom or
a small school. (English being squeezed out at the primary level under
various pretexts in today's Goa is
quite another matter.)

Pandu, I think your overall pessimism could turn into a 'good'
self-fulfilling prophecy! FN

[Goanet] Showers bring relief from heat

2010-06-08 Thread Mauricio Pereira

Heavy rains lashed Goa on Monday evening, bringing immense relief from the
sultry weather and creating conditions for the onset of the monsoon. The south
west monsoon has advanced up to Karwar and conditions are favourable for its
onset over Goa, meteorologial department director K V Singh said on Monday.

Though Singh declined to state whether the monsoon would arrive in Goa on
Tuesday, he said the monsoon current has built up adequately. All signs of
cyclone Phet had disappeared by Sunday evening and the current had built up for
restoration of the monsoon.

The cyclone had deflected it, resulting in a delay in the arrival of the
monsoon, though the monsoon usually arrives in Goa by the first week of June.
The monsoon had advanced over Kerala and some southern parts of Karnataka, but
it advanced further over most other parts of the neighbouring state by Monday
evening, heralding the end of summer there. By Monday evening, most parts of
Goa had received moderate to heavy showers.

Various parts of Goa experienced at least 2mm of rainfall during the 24 hours
up to 8.30am Monday. Quepem witnessed heavy rainfall with the weathermen
recording 25.2 mm there.

It was followed by Margao, which had 21.2mm. The met department has predicted
moderate to rather heavy rainfall during the next 24 hours in the state.

[Goanet] DKA – when and why formed? - I

2010-06-08 Thread Sebastian Borges

Dear friends,
The question is now all but settled, you will say. Hopefully, because, with
politicians, one never knows. So, don't be surprised if he returns with the
same old canard which has now been debunked for the nth time: Dalgado Konknni
Akademi (DKA) was established in 1989, in order to fight the injustice meted
out to Konkani in Roman script. I am sure some of you will ask me: How does
it concern you? How are you (or we, for that matter) personally affected by the
year of its establishment? Have we not expended enough time and band-width on
this trivial matter, that you should be testing our patience further by wasting
some more? These are very valid questions. So I must attend to them. But,
before that, here's a bombshell.
Tomazinho Cardozo has done it again! In his letter appearing in V.IXTT dated
5/6/2010, he refuses to admit that the GKA was established (and existed) in
1988. And this is in spite of the fact that the evidence, that he has himself
proffered in the form of Minutes of a meeting, is typed on a paper which has
the name and address of the Akademi PRINTED thereon but also bears the
RUBBER-STAMP President, Dalgado Konknni Akademi under the signature of Fr.
Freddy J. Da Costa. This means that as on the day of the meeting, the Akademi
had existed as an entity for a considerable period of time and this fact
supports the history given by Fr. Pratap Naik in which he clearly says that the
DKA was established on 28-08-1988 at Loyola High School, Margao. Moreover, the
Minutes vouchsafe for the following: (a) A full-day meeting of the DKA was held
on 8/11/2008 between 10 am and 5 pm at Instituto N. Sra. da Piedade, Panaji.
(b) It was attended by over 75 members. (c)
At least two meetings were held prior to this and the minutes of both were
read at this very meeting by the General Secretary, hold your breath, Tomazinho
Cardozo himself. (d) The Akademi had appointed a committee to frame
orthographic rules and the same had already submitted its recommendations which
would be published shortly thereafter. (We know that the booklet was published
in 1988 itself and I have a copy. The members were: Dr. Mathew Almeida sj
(Secretary), Felicio Cardoso, Fr. Moreno de Souza sj, Fr. Kyriel D'Souza sfx,
Fr. Anastasio Gomes ocd and Fr. Freddy J. Da Costa.) (e) The Akademi had
appointed a committee for framing its constitution; this constitution was
deliberated upon and passed in this very meeting. (f) The Akademi was to bring
out an annual during the ensuing Christmas-New Year. The publication (Goencho
Pormoll 1989) was in fact brought out in January 1989 and the Editorial Board
consisted of Prabhakar Tendulkar, Bonaventure
D'Pietro, Felicio Cardoso, Thomas Fernandes, Agnel Pires and Irene Cardozo.
(g) The Akademi was to hold an exhibition of books and periodicals on 2/2/2009.
Now, would there be another person in the entire world that could still persist
with a lie in the face of such overwhelming evidence? Please see the Minutes
here:
http://tinyurl.com/2vumz6j
Truly, I am not in the least bit personally affected by the year of
establishment of DKA. I do not stand to gain anything if it was established in
1988 nor do I lose anything if it was founded in 1989. But I am concerned with
the truth. I apprehend the entanglement of time-lines if Tomazinho Cardozo's
above-quoted statement is allowed to stand. Hence it is not a trivial matter.
My apprehension has already come true. In Professor Olivinho Gomes' recent book
it is stated erroneously that DKA was established in 1989 (see pg. 179). Now,
imagine a not so implausible situation, some 40 or so years hence, when a
budding researcher delves into the history of the Konkani Movement. Obviously,
the history of DKA will form a part of the research. The researcher will come
across the writings of Cardozo and also of Gomes. From these he will conclude
that the DKA was established in 1989. This conclusion will be reinforced by the
Sthap 1989 in the logo of the
Akademi. He may then stumble upon a booklet Konkani Orthography in Roman
Script and find that it was compiled by a Committee appointed by the same
Akademi and published in 1988. Obviously he will be in a dilemma: How could an
Akademi established in 1989 come to publish a book in 1988, and, that too, a
book which was compiled by its own committee? In order to solve the conundrum,
he will look into the credentials of Gomes and Cardozo. He will find that Gomes
was not only an esteemed Professor of Konkani but also an eminent researcher
with several books and papers to his credit. He will also find that Cardozo was
a Headmaster as well as a Speaker of Goa Legislative Assembly and author of
several books. With such impeccable credentials of the authors, he will have no
hesitation to conclude that the year 1988 on the booklet is a misprint. And
THAT would be an erroneous conclusion; the booklet was indeed published in
1988. Many such events could be

2010-06-08 Thread Mauricio Pereira

Mickky Pacheco is not the first politician to bow out of office over
allegations of involvement with women.

Little more than two decades ago, then speaker of Goa's assembly Dayanand
Narvekar was embroiled in a major controversy. He faced an allegation of having

Though the nature of the charge against Narvekar, who is presently the Aldona
MLA, was different, he was in the news for trying to defend himself by claiming
that it was a false charge made by his political rivals. Ultimately after an
agitation, Narvekar had to put in his papers. The molestation issue had its
effect on the electoral politics. In the assembly elections held some months
later in 1989, Narvekar lost the Aldona seat to an MGP candidate Ratnakar
Chopdekar by just 333 votes.

[Goanet] New twist to the NADIA TORRADO case.

2010-06-08 Thread Mauricio Pereira

In a new twist to the Nadia Joelle Torrado unnatural death case, Lyndon
Monteiro, who was officer on special duty to Francisco Mickky Pacheco, who
resigned as Goa's tourism minister on Saturday, moved the court for
anticipatory bail on Monday. Meanwhile, Nadia's family was interrogated by the
crime branch for the fourth consecutive day in connection with her unnatural
death.

Pacheco's bodyguards and the principal of a college where Nadia studied were
also called by crime branch in connection with the investigation. Though
Monteiro moved for anticipatory bail, police spokesperson A V Deshpande said,
Lyndon is till date not a suspect in the case.

He was asked to appear for interrogation by the crime branch. Today he has
filed for anticipatory bail. Monteiro, apprehending arrest in the case, moved
the sessions court at Margao for anticipatory bail under Section 438 of CrPC
after the crime branch summoned him to their office at Dona Paula on Sunday. In
his application, Monteiro claimed that he is in no manner connected with the
death of Nadia or to the personal life of the former minister except sharing a
professional relationship.

Monteiro requested the court to direct the police to release him on bail in the
event of his arrest and also sought for an interim order releasing him on
interim bail pending the hearing or disposal of the anticipatory bail
application. His lawyer Amit Palekar told TOI that notices have been served on
both the respondents for filing their say in the matter. Though Maina-Curtorim
police had registered the offence, the CID/crime branch is entrusted the work
of probing the case. As such notices have been served on both the respondents,
he explained.

The application is likely to come up for hearing Tuesday afternoon. Monteiro
said in his bail application that the former minister has been falsely
implicated in the case due to political reasons.

[Goanet] Divine hand for GOA CM.

2010-06-08 Thread Mauricio Pereira

Goa chief minister Digamber Kamat has said that a divine hand was guiding him
in the governance which is helping him overcome the obstacles.

Kamat, in a booklet released by the state government on the completion of three
years, said, I am conscious of the fact that the divine hand is guiding me to
fulfill my life mission of service to fellowmen and helping me overcome
obstacles in my path.

The chief minister has faced two major revolts during last three years of
governance when its coalition ally - NCP, along with supporting legislators
raised banner of discontent against him. The revolt was calmed down by
intervention of Congress and NCP high commands.

There is a feeling that much more could have been accomplished had there been
a totally favourable ambience, Kamat said in the booklet 'Golden Glow,'
released yesterday.

When questioned on what was the non-favourable ambience, Kamat avoided a direct
answer.

I mean I could have done better. I feel, I could have done better which I am
trying to do in future, he said.

Kamat said some areas of concern and challenges are decline in agrarian economy
and making agriculture an economically viable proposition.

Existence of unemployment and underemployment, rising migration, slums and
related social issues, solid waste management, disposal issues, coverage of
sewerage and sanitation facilities, sustainable development with environmental
protection and adequate availability of financial resources are the challenges
faced by government, he said.

[Goanet] Fwd: Agriculture

2010-06-08 Thread Ganv Ghor
Today I visited the Zonal agricultural office at Margao as we had recently
received a letter from them stating they had given no permission to the TCP
or any other department for change in land use or zone .
While I was discussing I asked the department head why he does not take up
seriously the case of construction near agricultural fields and should not
there be a buffer zone while he agreed that all this construction was
affecting agriculture and the farmers he was helpless .He very eagerly told
me to go either to the pollution control board or the collector .[I have
reached a stage whereby I hate to be told by some department where to go as
its their way of passing the buck and not taking action and being
accountable] .
I told him please do not tell a poor farmer to go to the Collector and to
PCB Panjim We know you as the agricultural department and its up to you to
assist us .
I told him if he issued letters on the farmers behalf to the PCB he would
get copies of the report and the outcome which could be studied and if the
results prove across the board what we fear that construction near paddy
fields affects agriculture and the health of the farmers [sores etc have
been reported from many places] then he should immediately send this to the
collector and the TCP as it’s the collector that issues Sanads along with
the report of the TCP and the Mamlatdar the agriculture department however
has no say in the matter .

The poor man already burdened with nothing to do was not willing to take
this extra job .I told him while I was sitting making this valid suggestion
which would help so many suffering farmers at the cost of my daughter
waiting to be picked up he was being paid and refusing to assist the farmer
.I went on to tell him if the department continued like this and did not
assert itself they would need to close and perhaps it did not matter as he
would anyway be nearing the retirement age .

Conclusion :If someone can please invite information where construction has
come or coming up near fields or in them ask the PCB to do a report of the
pollution effects on the soil and water in the area compile the data and
send to the TCP collector and expose what is taking place in the name of
development .However if this is already done then please advise with the
same so others can use in their respective cases .

At the close I fail to understand how Rs 150 for about a week can help the 1
farmer as it takes more than one to work on the field !! besides labourers
take more than Rs 150 .
I do not understand why the zonal agricultural department does not visit the
villages to distribute manure etc instead of the local MLA !!??
After asking the Panchayat for over 3 years to clean the ponds rebuild the
bundhs etc its still not done never mind agriculture we can at least have
rain water harvesting which our Prime Minister speaks about so our water
table is maintained .
Seems like all the departments and people that have to do what they need to
are busy doing something else no wonder things are the way they are .

Thanks to Alfred for the material, he has not traced the source of the
melancholy piece.  We thank the author. Eric.
The Sea-King - A Goan Seaman's Story
Minguel Antonio Piedade Gonsalves was born in Sinquetim, a large ward of
Navelim village, the third child of a poor mundcar couple. He had nine other
siblings, jointly the cause of his parents having to do all sorts of odd jobs
in addition to their back-breaking share-cropper occupations.

As a child Minguel was the most spirited and energetic and yet the most
respectful, often being rudely compared to the runt of the litter. It was these
qualities that made one of his uncles who lived in Bombay and worked in the
Port Trust, decide to take Minguel with him for a better life in the city. What
could his parents do but acquiesce to what looked a better future than that he
could expect in Goa.

So, when he was 14, Minguel tearfully left his family and took the first leg of
many stages of the trip that would finally land him in his uncle's house in
Umerkhadi. In those days there was no direct transportation from Goa and one
would be lucky to reach a Bombay destination in less than 48 to 72 hours.
Especially if one's travel budget did not allow for shorter routes.

He was placed in St. Joseph's School which had a largely Mangalorean student
roster. Second only to of course the Muslims whose community dominated the
neighborhood. By the time he was 18, he decided to drop out in commiseration
with the lack of funds of his uncle and his desire to be independent through
employment. The kindly priest in charge of the bursary at St Joseph's would
always meet the shortfall in fees, uniforms and text book expenses but Minguel
was a free spirit and had no desire to be obligated.

In no time at all a sympathetic soul in the municipal housing projects where he
lived, took Minguel to the Seafarers Union and got him a job on a foreign tramp
steamer. Minguel had at last found his niche.

The brotherhood of Goan sailors who transited Bombay to and from their villages
in Goa were a united lot. They were utterly honest with each other. They had a
self-imposed hierarchical system among themselves, based mostly on the years at
sea. On returning from their long global voyages, they would meet their
fellow-kudcars in the many clubs or Goan kudds that dot Dhobitalao, Girgaum,
Cavel and even Ballard Estate and parts of the Fort Area. There they would
debrief and that information would be used profitably by those coming from Goa
and on to the lines at the Seaman's Club for jobs on the next available tramps,
ro-ros, liners or tankers.

As he prospered, Minguel married Felicidade and built a small modern house on a
minor parcel of land that his friendly bhatcar sold to him at a very
concessional price. Minguel knew his place and though his house contained all
the comforts of life, none of it was ostentatious and none of it flaunted in
the face of his bhatcar.

It was in these pleasant surroundings that Feli gave birth to Minguel's son
Valeri, a name taken by Minguel from a large Russian tanker that crossed his
ship in the mid-Atlantic on one of his voyages. Felicidade was an educated Goan
girl whose father was a PWD contractor from Portuguese times, belonging to the
same low caste as Minguel.

Make no mistake. Every little luxury that Feli and little Valeri enjoyed was
paid for with the blood, hard work and loneliness of Minguel at sea. He endured
all manner of insults from the officers and all kinds of rough treatment from
crew of various nationalities that he encountered. But so did his other Goan
brother seamen. And none of them let out the slightest hint of that endurance
to any of their family back home in Goa. Even over drinks at the local bar.

One day on his return, he presented his son with a Sea King swiss-made wrist
watch from Favre Leuba. That model along with the Sea Chief also made by Favre
Leuba was a favorite among Goan seamen. They gave it to their sons and to any
of their non-seamen friends they genuinely liked.

Feli raised Valeri in the best Goan traditions. He was a an academically gifted
boy and shone through school and college without much effort. In time he was
admitted to the prestigious Indian Institute of Management in Ahmedabad and in
his final semester he was recruited as a management trainee to work at Merrill
Lynch in Manhattan at their Bond Desk. Within three years, Valeri was a VP sent
out to bolster the Houston office to rake in all that oil money from their
major accounts in that city. Wherever he went he carried his father's Sea-King.
He didn't wear it for fear it would tarnish, but being automatic, he ensured it
kept on working continuously. It reminded him of his father who had missed out
on many of the family's milestones.

Minguel was proud of his boy but Valeri knew nothing of the ship's toilets
cleaned and the officers' cabins washed by his father to make a living they
enjoyed. He

[Goanet] Tip The Den, Mickey !

2010-06-08 Thread Freddy Fernandes
Tip The Den, Mickey !

As kids most of us must have played hide and seek and tip the den games one
time of the other, both are similar but tip the den is certainly the more
exciting one, as kids it was very exciting and enjoyed it too, it did not
require to many kids as well, could be played even between just two kids, with
not much space required either, one could play it anywhere and everywhere. In
villages even today, every time I watch kids play that game a smile lights up my
face and takes me back in time, to the good old days of yore.

While playing this game we hid, not just behind trees or structures but also in
some of the most difficult of places not worried of the dirtiness around or the
availability of light either, we just made ourselves as invisible as possible,
leaving the poor soul (the den) to spot us before we tipped the den, sometimes
a few of us would come in a group out of nowhere and tip the den, leaving the
den confused and immobile. For kids it does sound good but when the grown up's
play this game, they look ridiculously silly.

Last couple of day the media is all about our Hip Hop politician Mickey
playing tip the den with our security services and I am sure he is going to
tip the den even before our den, the police, realize it, making them look
utterly foolish.

Mickey Mickey Mickey where are thou ? asks the security services, how can a man
of your stature and acumen do this to us, when we supported you in all your
endeavors, acted blind to all your aggressions, even against our very own, and
time and again reached late to curb your favourite indulgence the direos, we
even let you drive your expensive all terrain vehicle the Hummer without
registration, helped you by delaying the FIR filed by your wife Sara, and the
complain by the Engineer whom you had slapped. Even in this case too we will
help you as much as we can, now just because it's fresh news, everyone is
interested, but after a while everything will be forgotten. We have been so nice
and accommodating and why do you like to make us look foolish in front the Goan
people ?

Most of us know the fire brand politician who got his kicks by breaking every
rule in the book or on second thoughts, he could have been ignorant of the
rules, a possibility knowing his personal limitations. He was a tailor by
profession, he then goes to Bahrain where he struggles and in some years reaches
the land of opportunities called USA, like a lot of migrants his stars seemed to
have shone too and out of a nobody he suddenly becomes everybody's envy, as he
lands up in a fortune that nobody had dreamt off.

He than comes back to Goa flaunting his newly acquired riches and locks horns
with our Great Churchill Almeao and before anyone could say Alleluia he kicks
Churchill's backside and wins the election from the constituency of Benaulim and
voila in no time showing his muscle and money power becomes a minister, if one
dud can become a Minister or even a Chief Minister why not the other ? So
starts the political life line of Mickey. He even went to the extent of owning a
football team but then as the football governing body of India did not bow to
his ethics he withdrew his team. But as it is said it's impossible to straighten
the tail of a dog, so also the problematic life style of the flamboyant Mickey.

Old habits are hard to die is an old axiom which is very much applicable to
Mickey, his inherent temper and his flair for expensive cars, women and equally
fast lifestyle were not the perfect panaceas for all his ills and did put him in
a lot of trouble both personally, as well as a politician and the latest episode
has culminated into Mickey playing tip the den with the security services. How
far and how long it's to go ? We'll have to just wait and watch.

Mean while speculations and anxiety over the situation grows the bereaved family
has to go through muck and acrimony. This is indeed tragic. In any crime the
guilty must be punished, but isn't it true that every crime should be treated
equally ? Every individual has to be given justice ? Does not our constitution
give justice for all ? So, when so many other equally questionable suicides,
murders and abetments are just ignored, while only a few are looked into, why is
the life of this young lady so important and that of the others so worthless ?
Are we seeking justice ? Or are we seeking revenge ? Or are we seeking political
mileage ? In fulfilling our political agendas we just do not mind whom we
trample over or what distress we cause to the other, as long as we get the
publicity.

Is the nation in a coma?

Mohan Murti

The Hindu, Business Line

Date:31/05/2010 URL:
http://www.thehindubusinessline.com/2010/05/31/stories/2010053150300900.htm

Europeans believe that Indian leaders are too blinded by new wealth and
deceit to comprehend that the day will come when the have-nots will hit the
streets.

A few days ago I was in a panel discussion on mergers and acquisitions in
Frankfurt, Germany, organised by Euro-forum and The Handelsblatt, one of the
most prestigious newspapers in German-speaking Europe.

The other panellists were senior officials of two of the largest carmakers
and two top insurance companies - all German multinationals operating in
India.

The panel discussion was moderated by a professor from the esteemed European
Business School. The hall had an audience that exceeded a hundred well-known
European CEOs. I was the only Indian.

After the panel discussion, the floor was open for questions. That was when
my moment of truth turned into an hour of shame, embarrassment - when the
participants fired questions and made remarks on their experiences with the
evil of corruption in India.

The awkwardness and humiliation I went through reminded of The Moment of
Truth, the popular Anglo-American game. The more questions I answered
truthfully, the more the questions get tougher. Tougher here means more
embarrassing.

European disquiet

Questions ranged from Is your nation in a coma?, the corruption in
judiciary, the possible impeachment of a judge, the 2G scam and to the money
parked illegally in tax havens.

It is a fact that the problem of corruption in India has assumed enormous
and embarrassing proportions in recent years, although it has been with us
for decades. The questions and the debate that followed in the panel
discussion was indicative of the European disquiet. At the end of the QA
session, I surmised Europeans perceive India to be at one of those junctures
where tripping over the precipice cannot be ruled out.

Let me substantiate this further with what the European media has to say in
recent days. In a popular prime-time television discussion in Germany, the
panellist, a member of the German Parliament quoting a blog said: If all
the scams of the last five years are added up, they are likely to rival and
exceed the British colonial loot of India of about a trillion dollars.

Banana Republic

One German business daily which wrote an editorial on India said: India is
becoming a Banana Republic instead of being an economic superpower. To get
the cut motion designated out, assurances are made to political allays.
Special treatment is promised at the expense of the people. So, Ms Mayawati
who is Chief Minister of the most densely inhabited state, is calmed when an
intelligence agency probe is scrapped. The multi-million dollars fodder scam
by another former chief minister wielding enormous power is put in cold
storage. Prime Minister Man Mohan Singh chairs over this kind of
unparalleled loot.

An article in a French newspaper titled Playing the Game, Indian Style
wrote: Investigations into the shadowy financial deals of the Indian
cricket league have revealed a web of transactions across tax havens like
Switzerland, the Virgin Islands, Mauritius and Cyprus. In the same article,
the name of one Hassan Ali of Pune is mentioned as operating with his wife a
one-billion-dollar illegal Swiss account with sanction of the Indian
regime.

A third story narrated in the damaging article is that of the former chief
minister of Jharkhand, Madhu Koda, who was reported to have funds in various
tax havens that were partly used to buy mines in Liberia. Unfortunately,
the Indian public do not know the status of that enquiry, the article
concluded.

In the nastiest business scam in Indian records (Satyam) the government
adroitly covered up the political aspects of the swindle - predominantly
involving real estate, wrote an Austrian newspaper. If the Indian Prime
Minister knows nothing about these scandals, he is ignorant of ground
realities and does not deserve to be Prime Minister. If he does, is he a
collaborator in crime?

The Telegraph of the UK reported the 2G scam saying: Naturally, India's

Our new disclosures about the £10,000 jolly to Rome in February 2008, which

In May 2008 Mireskandari even turned up at a Vaz-led Home Affairs Select

[Goanet] Goa's missing ex-Minister of Tourism Mickey Pacheco has applied for anticipatory bail in a Goa court

2010-06-08 Thread Gabe Menezes
Goa's missing ex-Minister of Tourism Mickey Pacheco has applied for
anticipatory bail in a Goa court.

The court will hear the plea tomorrow. The prosecution has complained that
Pacheco is not cooperating with the police. Pacheco's Officer on Special
Duty (OSD) OSD, Lyndon Monteiro has also filed an anticipatory bail
application as he too fears arrest.

Mickey Pacheco had resigned on Saturday, a day after the police interrogated
him in connection with the death of his friend Nadia Torrado, a 28-year-old
woman. He then went missing and still is. All police stations in Goa had
been informed that Pacheco had gone missing.

Nadia had died in a Chennai hospital recently after she allegedly consumed
poison. Trouble started for the NCP minister when women's organisations
accused him of being responsible for her death.

However, Nadia's family members, including her estranged husband Wilson
Barretto; have stood by Pacheco saying she accidentally used a tube of rat
poison mistaking it for toothpaste.

In his anticipatory bail plea Mickey Pacheco has said he is innocent. He has
pointed to the fact that Nadia's family says she consumed poison by mistake.

He has termed allegations against him as absurd, far-fetched and baseless
and assured the court that he won't jump bail, tamper with evidence or
influence witnesses.

He has also said that his name has been dragged into the case by political
rivals to destroy his career and has alleged that the police are acting at
the behest of those rivals.

Police have said that though it is too early to say if the former minister
is involved in the young woman's death, they believe he is connected in some
way to the case.

Pacheco, 46, quit from as minister stating that he wanted the police to
conduct a free and fair inquiry into the incident.

2010-06-08 Thread Dr.Nandkumar Kamat
A thoughtful critique by Journalist Nandini Krishnan, Chennai
Excerpts:-
The Maoists have consistently turned down invitations to hold talks.
India doesn’t have the best record where ‘talks’ are concerned - we’ve

non-Naxals a solution to this?
It may have been Abraham Lincoln who famously quoted the Bible and
said “a house divided against itself cannot stand”. But the adage

India. It is this quality which saw parts being swallowed whole by the
Mughals and then raped by the British.
We can debate about a government attacking its own citizens, but how
can those who claim to be exempt from the law qualify as citizens? We
live in far more dangerous times than the Colonial Era, and the world
is watching as the big candidate for the United Nations Security
Council struggles with ‘internal security threats’.
In an age of neo-colonialism and terrorism, with far too many vested
interests to keep track of, what are we opening ourselves to in
providing forums for Maoist sympathisers?

stomach upset. Mickky came to the house at 1.30 pm. At 2.00 pm Nadia's
condition had worsened and she began to vomit yellow stuff Hours she was
moved to hospital. Unfortunately I cannot recall where I read that report

[Goanet] For Goan men....

2010-06-08 Thread George Pinto
The boiler-plate letter below is for Goan men who need to call in sick during
World Cup Football. All you need to do is fill in your Supervisor's name and
your name and send. George

Dear Supervisor abc

Every four years around this time I get ill. Very ill such that my doctor has
advised complete rest at home in front of the TV till I feel well again. Or at
least until the World Cup Football final is over. Furthermore, my doctor has
advised me to minimize use of the internet to only urban legends posts and fake
anti-Christian emails which my friends circulate which even a 5 year-old knows
is fake but I assume is true. Hence, I cannot work from home.

Since my medical condition is a special case with ongoing tests being done, we
cannot currently isolate the disease. However, for my Personnel file, please
pick any random disease from this list http://www.cdc.gov/DiseasesConditions/.
Do not pick any sexual disease as I am not a Goan politician with my pants
unzipped.

I expect to make a complete recovery by July 11. For times, I am most likely to
be very sick and unreachable by phone, see

Wishing the company continued success.

[Goanet] For Goan men.... Part II

2010-06-08 Thread George Pinto
The boiler-plate letter below is for Goan men to address to their wives during
World Cup Football. All you need to do is fill in your wife's name and your
name and send. In the case of Goan politicians fill in your wife's name,
mistress' name, girlfriend's name, etc. George

Dear gorgeous, most beautiful, most understanding abc

I have just returned from the doctor's office and have some sad news. My life
is at risk and only drastic measures over the next 5 weeks will save me. Even
the chiropractor, mail-order medical scam artist, untrained homeopath,
part-time ayurvedic practitioner, all agree I need 5 weeks in a comfortable
chair to recover. To improve my eyesight (which will make me appreciate the
things you do even more) I also need eye exercises. Lo and behold, they all
agree that watching the World Cup football is just the right eye treatment. As
you know, I always follow the doctor's advice.

I have also been advised to watch the pre-game and post-game shows and
analysis. This could run about 18 hours a day for the next 5 weeks, which means
no time for hanky-panky. Please understand, I am doing this for health reasons.

Since your love knows no bounds, please provide regular chilled beer with
snacks which will speed up my recovery. You do want me to live long to see the
grandchildren grow up? Yes, I am doing this for them.

I expect to make a complete recovery by July 11. For times, I am most likely to
be very sick and in need of solitude, see
http://www.marca.com/deporte/futbol/mundial/sudafrica-2010/calendario-english.html

Wishing you strength through this difficult period.

Your one true love,
xyz

We are two consenting adults – You bugger off!

Well, don’t you have anything better to do?

I have a girlfriend and you don’t – are you jealous?

I have a wife, so what? Can’t I have a girlfriend?

Which world you live in?
Having a girlfriend nowadays, is a fashion  for godsake.

Sometime we need to talk to someone to share feelings,
experience or to explore..

Sometimes, we need a privacy – just two of us
Away from narrow minded people like you

Today, we may not be that close to each other
But this could change tomorrow. And if it does happen..
What’s wrong with that?
We two are consenting adults, remember?

Mind your own business

Get a life
Get yourself a girlfriend or boyfriend
or just shut up, will you?

What is their misdemeanour? Wherin does it lie?

Do they deserve less in LIBERATED GOA than many of the so called FREEDOM
