MUSINGS ON INDEPENDENCE DAY

By

Eduardo Faleiro

    On August
15, we celebrate the Independence Day. On that day,  in 1947, Prime
Minister Nehru proclaimed  a tryst with destiny, “a moment which comes but
rarely in History when we step from the old into the new, when an age ends and
the soul of a nation, long suppressed, finds utterance”
    The colonial
rule destroyed the Indian economy and greatly impoverished the people of India.
An estimate by the Cambridge historian Angus Wilson reveals that in 1700,
India’s share of the world income was 22.6 percent comparable to the entire
income of Europe  which was then at  23.3  percent . By 1952,
however, India’s share fell to 2.3 percent of the world income.  By
all  accounts, India was a prosperous nation at the onset of Western
colonialism.  The French traveller Jean - Baptiste Tavernier in his
‘Travels in India’, written in the 17th  century,  gives
the  following  account  of Indian life. “Even in the
smallest  villages,  rice,  flour, butter, milk,
beans  and  other  vegetables,  sugar  and
sweetmeats  can  be  procured  in  abundance”.
Yet, du
ring  the  British  rule, as  per  Government records
of the time, 70 to  80 percent of Indians were living at subsistence
levels, two   thirds   were
undernourished   and   in
Bengal    nearly four fifths were undernourished.
At all times  in its History, even the most distressing, India was revered
by the great minds across the continents.  The renowned  American
historian, Will Durant summed it up “India was the  motherland of our
race, and Sanskrit the mother of Europe’s languages: she was the mother of our
philosophy; mother, through the Arabs, of much of our mathematics; mother,
through  the Buddha, of the ideals embodied in Christianity; mother,
through the village community, of self-government and democracy. Mother India
is in many ways the mother of us all”.

Today, India is the second fastest growing economy in the world with a growth
rate of 8 to 10 percent per year.  This has been accompanied by growth in
life expectancy, literacy and food security. India’s present GDP is expected to
multiply 5 times by 2030.
The freedom struggle was not just for political freedom. It was not merely to
dislodge foreign rulers and install our own. It was also for social and
economic change and for a life of peace and dignity to all citizens. Whilst
India witnesses rapid economic growth, there are still vast numbers of people
in the country who face grave problems of illiteracy, disease and poverty. What
is required is greater attention to inclusive development that benefits
significantly all sections of the population.
A major managerial and policy challenge that we face today results from the
speed  of urbanization. It is estimated that by 2030, most cities and
quasi urban regions of India will witness a substantial increase in population.
Unless a massive expansion of infrastructure begins right now, these regions
will be affected by a sharp decline in water supply with a large section of the
population having no access to potable water at all.  Towns could have 70
to 80 per cent of sewage untreated.  Whilst car ownership will increase
exponentially, shortcomings in the transportation infrastructure might create
an unmanageable urban gridlock. Affordable housing for the low income group is
a most important concern.  At present, a person earning an average salary
cannot own a dwelling in most parts of the country and the price of land is
bound to further increase over the years. An strategy ought to be devised to
provide affordable housing to the average citizen. Planni
ng mandates in the United Kingdom have generated 20 to 25 per cent of all
affordable units built over the last decade.  South Africa allots free
land for houses to its poorest income group.  Singapore provides public
housing for more than 80 per cent of its population through a dedicated Housing
Development Board, interest rate subsidies and other financial devices to make
housing affordable to all.
    We, the
people of India, must rise above our religious, ethnic and linguistic diversity
and together deal with the multifarious tasks that confront us today. The
framework  for  responsible  citizenship   and
national  regeneration has been laid down   in  the
Indian  Constit

Do Mr. Mark D'Souza and Mr. Sam Furtado know anything about the hate crimes
that take place in the US?
Do you know how many Church burnings have taken place in the US,
not by folks from other religions, but by Christians themselves? Do you know of
cross burnings and hate crimes against minorities? Do you know of vandalism
against
synagogues and other places of worship? Sure, there are laws but the
enforcement and
prosecution has taken decades.

Please research all that. You will have plenty to learn and assimilate before
trying to bring in
the US religious freedoms into any discussions on Goanet.

And one more thing, just try converting a person of Jewish faith to
Christianity or for that
matter try converting anybody to a different faith in the US! You are bound to
face stiff resistance
and opposition. If there is change of faith in the US, it is mostly by personal
choice.

It appears that Goans use the word 'zonv' in many different contexts, as in:

Zonvo bai shent which means I couldn't give a damn or I couldn't care less.
This is often abbreviated to zovom bai or even shorter 'baiek'

Equivalently one could say: Marache bailek chamar zovona tor?

[Goanet] A TRIBUTE TO 'THE SONG_Sunil Khushalani

2010-08-08 Thread Venantius J Pinto
The following writeup is a tribute to the Hindi song (Film) from my pal
Sunil Khushalani. Sunil Khushalani

I met Sunil in the 90s at a Film Festival. We were in the same row---he came
up to me, and we got talking; soon learnt that he loves films, and not just
Bollywood movies. Years ago, when I was thinking of changing
fields---contemplating studying medicine; he helped me see the huge
investment I had made (I could not see this; having taken my approach and
skills, including even diligence for granted) towards my artistic labor.

He is a good person to know.

A TRIBUTE TO 'THE SONG'

I thought I would pay a special tribute to the 'song'-'the geet' or ' the
gaana'. Here's a sampling from the vast universe of hindi songs from the
last few decades.

THE THIRTIES
The decade where the talking and singing film started. Here's one of the
earliest songs produced.

http://youtu.be/-hcBNk9fhd4
The film was 'Achut Kanya'. The actors were Ashok Kumar and Devika Rani. The
composer was Saraswati Devi- a rare breed-that of a female music
composer. Think or look at a list of all music composers in hindi cinema,
and you will hardly see any female names.I do not know why, I wish it were
not, but it is one fact that I cannot explain.

THE FORTIES
Let's start with a song from the film 1948 film "Mela". The lyrics were by
Naushad's regular associate Shakeel Badayuni.

http://youtu.be/TibW9FG6yzg
Between the two, they were a very successful team- some of their highly
popular musical films are Dulari (1949)Baiju Bawra (1952), Shabab (1954),
Mother India (1957), and Mughal-e-Azam (1960), Ganga Jamuna (1961), and Mere
Mehboob (1963).

THE FIFTIES
Here's another song from the 1957 film, 'Miss Mary'.

http://youtu.be/8AlEZOW2Yj4
In addition to Kishore Kumar, the movie featured a young Meena Kumari and
Gemini Ganeshan (Rekha's father). The music was by Hemant Kumar. Hemant Kumar
had an incredible contribution to Indian cinema- he was not only a composer,
but also an accomplished playback singer. He also produced some very popular
films including 'Bees Saal Baad' and 'Khamoshi'

THE SIXTIES
'Geet Gaaya Patharon Ne' was a V.Shantaram film. It was the first film for 2
very succesful actors- Rajshree, who is V.Shantaram's daughter and
Jeetendra. Here's a 'geet' from this film

http://youtu.be/4INDBRQVtuM
The music is by Ramlal, who also gave music to the film 'Sehra'.This song is
sung by the eminent Hindustani classical vocalist Shrimati Kishori Amonkar.
The only other Hindi film that she sang for was Govind Nihalani's 'Drishti'
which had an exceptional soundtrack composed by her.

THE SEVENTIES
This song "Geet Gata Hoon" sung by Kishore Kumar was very popular. It was
from the film 'Lal Pathar'. The music was by Shankar Jaikishan and the
lyrics of this song were by Dev Kohli

http://youtu.be/N47ndACrJJc
Hema Malini played a rare negative role in this film.

THE EIGHTIES
'Sun Sahiba Sun' was a song that marked the end of Raj Kapoor' incredible
musical journey. It was from the 1985 film 'Ram Teri Ganga Maili'.Very few
film directors have left behind such a treasure of musical delights.

http://youtu.be/Ye2ufyRxb1E
The music in this film is by Ravindra Jain. Raj Kapoor had his incredible
ability of extracting the best music from each composer.

THE NINETIES
This is a song from a film from the cinematographer turned director Rajeev
Menon. The music here is by A R Rahman.

http://youtu.be/DSRu3JhKxus
In the 90's A. R. Rahman took the music industry by storm. Since he has
arrived on the scene, he has already won 9 Filmfare awards, the most number
of Filmfare awards that have been won by any music director - He has in tie
with Shankar Jaikishan who won an equal number from 1957-1976.

THE CURRENT DECADE
Amit Trivedi is a composer I have spoken about before. He is extremely
talented and an exciting composer to look out for. Here's a song by him from
a recent album 'Udaan'.

http://bit.ly/cx2IEE

Well, it is extremely evident- say what you want, HIndi film songs are here
to stay. Do any of you have any thoughts as to why they refuse to go away?
What about all of us attracts us to them - yearning for more and more and
always excited to find a good song!

Hi.

I guess it is an expensive affair to air such channels on Satellite or dish TV.
Currently only available on Cable TV.

And I tell you, once it starts airing on satellite/dish TV,
Cable operator may have to close down their business in Goa.
But this is not likely to happen so soon (or may never happen)

We did not go in for Dish TV for the same reason.
We don’t have cable TV either.

Dear Floriano, Again, to disagree

Konkani did not get a "bad deal for 450 years of Portuguee rule".
However inconvenient it might be to admit this, there were some phases
of Portuguese rule which were helpful to Konkani. The vast literature
created in the Romi script is a pointer to this. (Of course, some might
feel today that the Romi script was a diversion *away* from the real
Konkani, but that is another point.)

Saraswat Hindu support for Konkani seems to be a post-20th century
phenomenon, largely. Like the Catholics, who support the language for
reasons other than linguistic (in my view), the Saraswat Hindus also
have complex reasons for their support to the language.

Please see something I had written on language politics in Goa:
http://www.mail-archive.com/goanet-n...@lists.goanet.org/msg00067.html

Obviously, there's more than meets the eye. FN

floriano wrote:

Rico,
I appreciate your inputs. However, Konkani got the bad deal for 450
years of the Portuguese rule. At the same time, Marathi was something
else.
How that happened if Konkani was at the heart of Goan Saraswats, I fail
to understand. Either the numbers were ignorable or nobody cared enough.
It is a fact that Konkani is much alive in the Hindu world because of
Saraswats, perhaps.
When I wrote below, I was talking of the overview from the mainstream
Hindu point of view, which cannot be denied.
Konkani is the lingua franca and/or most widely sponken language of Goa
enough with the die-hard Marathi protagonists, Marathi being the
literary and the religious language. Why Konkani suffered so badly is
the question that perplexes me.

[Goanet] Ten Principles for Peace of Mind....

2010-08-08 Thread Gina Fernandes
Ten Principles for Peace of Mind

1. Do Not Interfere In Others' Business Unless Asked.
Most of us create our own problems by interfering too often in others' affairs.
We do so because somehow we have convinced ourselves that our way is the best
way, our logic is the perfect logic and those who do not conform to our
thinking
must be criticized and steered to the right  direction, our direction. This
thinking denies the existence of individuality and consequently the existence
of
God.. God has created each one of us in a unique way. No two human beings can
think or act in exactly the same way. All men or women act the way they do
because God within them prompts them that way. Mind your own business and you
will keep your peace.

2. Forgive And Forget.
This is the most powerful aid to peace of mind. We often develop ill feelings
inside our heart for the person who insults us or harms us. We nurture
grievances. This in turn results in loss of sleep, development of stomach
ulcers, and high blood pressure. This insult or injury was done once, but
nourishing of grievance goes on forever by constantly remembering it. Get over
this bad habit. Life is too short to waste in such trifles. Forgive, Forget,
and
march on. Love flourishes in giving and forgiving.

3. Do Not Crave For Recognition.
This world is full of selfish people. They seldom praise anybody without
selfish
motives. They may praise you today because you are in power, but no sooner than
you are powerless, they will forget your achievement and will start finding
faults in you. Why do you wish to kill yourself in striving for their
recognition? Their recognition is not worth the aggravation. Do your duties
ethically and sincerely.

4. Do Not Be Jealous.
We all have experienced how jealousy can disturb our peace of mind. You know
that you work harder than your colleagues in the office, but sometimes they get
promotions; you do not. You started a business several years ago, but you are
not as successful as your neighbor whose business is only one year old. There
are several examples like these in everyday life. Should you be jealous? No.
Remember everybody's life is shaped by his/her destiny, which has now become
his/her reality. If you are destined to be rich, nothing in the world can stop
you. If you are not so destined, no one can help you either. Nothing will be
gained by blaming others for your misfortune. Jealousy will not get you
anywhere; it will only take away your peace of mind.

5. Change Yourself According To The Environment.
If you try to change the environment single-handedly, the chances are you will
fail. Instead, change yourself to suit your environment. As you do this, even
the environment, which has been unfriendly to you, will mysteriously change and
seem congenial and harmonious.

6. Endure What Cannot Be Cured.
This is the best way to turn a disadvantage into an advantage. Every day we
face
numerous inconveniences, ailments, irritations, and accidents that are beyond
our control. If we cannot control them or change them, we must learn to put up
with these things. We must learn to endure them cheerfully. Believe in yourself
and you will gain in terms of patience, inner strength and will power.

7. Do Not Bite Off More Than You Can Chew.
This maxim needs to be remembered constantly. We often tend to take more
responsibilities than we are capable of carrying out. This is done to satisfy
our ego. Know your limitations.. Why take on additional loads that may create
more worries? You cannot gain peace of mind by expanding your external
activities. Reduce your material engagements and spend time in prayer,
introspection and meditation. This will reduce those thoughts in your mind that
make you restless. Uncluttered mind will produce greater peace of mind.

8. Meditate Regularly.
Meditation calms the mind and gets rid of disturbing thoughts. This is the
highest state of peace of mind. Try and experience it yourself. If you meditate
earnestly for half an hour everyday, your mind will tend to become peaceful
during the remaining twenty-three and half-hours. Your mind will not be easily
disturbed as it was before. You would benefit by gradually increasing the
period
of daily meditation. You may think that this will interfere with your daily
work. On the contrary, this will increase your efficiency and you will be able
to produce better results in less time.

9. Never Leave The Mind Vacant.
An empty mind is the devil's workshop. All evil actions start in the vacant
mind. Keep your mind occupied in something positive, something worthwhile.
Actively follow a hobby. Do something that holds your interest. You must decide
what you value more: money or peace of mind. Your hobby, like social work
or religious work, may not always earn you more money, but you will have a
sense
of fulfillment and achievement. Even when you are resting physically, occupy
yourself in healthy reading or mental cha

[Goanet] GOA SUDHAROP: "Year of the Goan Volunteer Spirit" event

2010-08-08 Thread George Pinto
This is a report on the seminar held on August 6, 2010 on the “Year of the Goan
Volunteer Spirit” organized by Goa Sudharop in association with VVM’s Shree
Damodar College of Commerce and Economics, Margao.

The program, attended by about 200 Higher Secondary students and staff members
of Damodar College and ably compered by students of the college, began with a
beautiful invocation song by four students. Dr. L. Bhanu Murthy, Principal of
the College then delivered his welcome address wherein he urged the students to
make the best use of this opportunity to learn as much as they could from the
seminar and from the experienced resource persons.

After the traditional lamp was lit and flowers presented to those on the dais
and to the resource persons, Mr. Ibonio D’Souza, Executive Director of Goa
Sudharop, delivered the keynote address. Thanking the management, staff
members, resource persons and the students for working together as a team to
make this seminar possible, Mr. D’Souza also explained the reasons for choosing
to celebrate the Spirit of Volunteerism as the Goa Sudharop theme for the year
2010. Not only does Goa Sudharop complete its 10th anniversary of fruitful work
in volunteer service for Goa and Goans this year, but the organization also
believes that the best way to eliminate various evils from society is by
creating a caring and sensitive community. Speaking to the students about the
purpose of the seminar, he said it was to enable them to understand how they
could make, both individually and collectively, a difference in our ailing
society and also positively transform their
own lives in the process.

The interactive seminar that followed comprised of four sessions conducted by
four different resource persons. The first session “Be the change” was
conducted by Mr. Pravin Sabnis, renowned motivational speaker and skilled
trainer of “Unlearning Unlimited”. Using several audio-visual clips, Mr. Sabnis
explained how we can each instill in ourselves the spirit of participating and
working for the welfare of the community and that we have to believe that each
one of us can make a difference. He challenged the students to think, to see
beyond the obvious, and to develop positive attitudes. In the words of Mahatma
Gandhi “Be the change you want to see in the world”.

The next session “Why serve society?” conducted by Acharya Prahlad Chaitanyaji
of the Swami Chinmaya Mission, Margao, was a very inspiring session. Using
everyday examples, Acharya Prahlad spoke gently yet very convincingly of the
importance of service and how service consists primarily of duty, selflessness
and unconditional love. When one person in a family is suffering, it is
impossible for others in the family to enjoy themselves. Similarly, when a
neighbour is in difficulty, we should be empathetic. All of us in society are
thus interconnected and it is up to each of us to make the world a better place.

The third session was by Rev. Fr. Kyriel D’Souza, Provincial Superior, Pilar
Society, who spoke on the topic “Better to light a candle than to curse the
darkness”. Rather than focusing on the negative as is very often done, Fr.
Kyriel spoke of how we can instead develop better attitudes by focusing on the
bright side of any situation, read inspiring stories, stay away from negative
influences and associate with happy people. The students were shown short
movie clips to demonstrate how doing good deeds and offering encouragement is
something each of us can effectively practice. Advising the students to read
the writings of Mahatma Gandhi and Swami Vivekananda, Fr. Kyriel said, “This is
the moment you can step forward and make a difference”.

The last session was by Dr. Jorson Fernandes, an ENT surgeon and a well
experienced speaker. Dr. Jorson spoke on the topic “Volunteerism in me”. Using
an audio visual presentation and practical demonstrations, he explained how
volunteerism is based on the assessment of the needs of others and providing
what is required. He explained how we are not here in this world by chance and
that each of us has within us the potential to do much for the community and
for society.

Ms. Florence Rebello, lecturer at Damodar College, then gave a brief wrap up of
all the sessions. The students were presented with certificates of
participation and there was also a special prize and a certificate to the best
student participant, Ms. Faheem Shah Aziz. The seminar concluded with a Vote of
Thanks by Dr. (Mrs) Manasvi Kamat.

[Goanet] On the selling of Vanxim

2010-08-08 Thread Rajan P. Parrikar
To Goanet -

I had photographed at this beautiful idyll a couple of years ago. It is right
across the river from the Devaaya resort.

What a tragedy. As I have said in the past, Goans ought to hand over Goa
to the bhaile rascals and the ghatis and be done with it.

I tried to retrieve my photos of Vanxim but a search comes up empty. My
database is searchable with keywords so I don't know why "Vanxim" or
Vanshim" are drawing a blank. I am not going to manually comb thousands
of images.

2010-08-08 Thread floriano

Rico,
I appreciate your inputs. However, Konkani got the bad deal for 450 years of
the Portuguese rule. At the same time, Marathi was something else.
How that happened if Konkani was at the heart of Goan Saraswats, I fail to
understand. Either the numbers were ignorable or nobody cared enough.
It is a fact that Konkani is much alive in the Hindu world because of
Saraswats, perhaps.

When I wrote below, I was talking of the overview from the mainstream Hindu
point of view, which cannot be denied.
Konkani is the lingua franca and/or most widely sponken language of Goa
enough with the die-hard Marathi protagonists, Marathi being the literary
and the religious language. Why Konkani suffered so badly is the question
that perplexes me.

[Goanet] River Princess

2010-08-08 Thread Camillo Fernandes

Peter Fernandes wrote :

 River Princess

Everyone knows the game of Cards known DONKEY, catch-play or
dor-sodd.we call in konkani.
The same is become with River Princess, how many Ministers entered
played with it and left.
The game here is making money. If one really wanted it to move out, it
would have gone out
from Sinquerim beach long time ago.

Similar incident happened in 1995. It was with an off-shore Oil Rig a
Barge with huge Derrick.
This Barge or Rig is not small, but as big as River Princess.
The day cannot be forgotten, as it was December, Goas patron St
Francis Xavier Feast day.
I was working with this Company and was based in Chennai. The Rig was
operating off
KARAIKAL and NAGAPATINAM Coast. Because of Cyclone Warning the Rig was
avacuated and the boys joined
me at my residence in Chennai to celebrate the feast. The next morning
we received a call from the
Radio Room, saying the Rig has landed on Karaikal Beach. The Rig was
anchored with 8 X 2-1/4" Diameter
Wire Lines and all 8 Anchor lines had snapped..

It was very difficult to reach Karaikal via road, all the roads were
blocked due to the Cyclone.
There was huge damage due to uprooting of trees, electric posts..and
there was heavy rain pouring.
No political hero got involved with the salvage operation.
It took us about a week to move this Barge off Karaikal coast.
The salvage operation was wth about 50 to 75 Fishing Trawlers.
On every high tide the trawlers pulled the Barge out one to two meters.

This Rig was built in 1972 and is still going strong.
At present drilling for ONGC off Mumbai Coast.

Poor River Pricess still off Sinquerim Beach.
Ali Baba and the chalis chor's are responsible for this?
Yes, sure. I have been to Alang Ship Breaking yard in Bhvnagar Nagar.Gujarat.
Huge ships are cut into pieces with no difficulty. Any shipbreaker from
Alang can undertake this job of cutting River Princess.
How many more years CATCH-PLAY?

Comments : Camilo Fernandes

The procrastination/inaction on the part of the Congress Government headed by
the shrewd Kamat

clearly shows that it is not interested in getting rid of River Princess. It
is years now but still no action

has been taken. They ministers only pay lip service but no concrete action.

The MLAs had been elected by the people with the high expectations that they

would represent the welfare of the people and save Goa from destruction.
However once elected

they are only interested in increasing their wealth at any cost. They only pay

lip service but no concrete action or solution.

Sangaonkars the owners of River Princess, who are in the mining industry make
huge profits but are not

interested in clearing the damage being caused to the environment.

If the Goa Government is serious in solving this problem they should take
immediate action to remove

River Princess and make Salgaonkars pay for the cost involved.

As Peter mentions, any shipbreaker from Alang, Gujarat can undertake this job
of cutting River Princess.

If so why is the Government shirking from its responsibility and making it
appear that is helpless in

performing this task.

RESPONSE: Thanks Mervyn, for posting this on to our broader community
blogsite; I quote once again, second time, confirmation of attendance
''*Understand
there were over 5,000 who attended this occasion and as I was only present
for a couple of hours I could not capture all the action''

This would equate to gate receipts of £12,500, car parking say 1,000 cars,
income at £5,000. The management were at variance, at one time informing
Members that they had procured outside parking at great expense and in the
same enclosure requesting members, to not bring their cars - seems the right
hand does not know what the left is doing!

Sure there are expenses involved, so I will disregard income from stalls,
including the commission received from the Bar/s, raffles, if any and the
Sponsorship - we were informed years ago that the grounds were given for
hire at a nominal sum; perhaps this has changed now?

I write this, as I was shafted for querying why there was no audit done for
the last accounting period.

I shall write further about this in another posting.

Why it bothers you what, when, how Christians do or don't with Christ? How

Floriano,

This isn't quite true. The attitude of diverse groups in Goa towards the
Konkani-Marathi divide is more complex than that.

The Hindu Saraswat has been on the (mostly devanagari) Konkani side,
since at least the mid-20th side, and since "Shenoy Goembab" (quotes
because that was his pen-name).

Check this article below, a contentious piece by Ashok Row Kavi, who
gives one point of view on a complex subject:

http://www.mail-archive.com/goanet@lists.goanet.org/msg21732.html

Catholics and Hindu Saraswats, in other words, supported Konkani in the
1980s, but arguably for entirely differing reasons. FN

Re: [Goanet] Travelling by Cargo ships, freighters around the world

2010-08-08 Thread Venantius J Pinto
Hi Nascy,
Thanks. The other companies (non-Indian in the links) seem to do well and
encourage such travel. Some time back, I met a videographer who had
travelled on a cargo ship to the East if I remember correctly.

I can imagine that it involves planning,, process, good protocol on part of
the company crew, as also the passengers. The companies and now there are
many who take on passengers are equipped to do so. They also have cabins.
Perhaps we are not yet quite wholeheartedly into that servicem or perhaps we
are now. It also demands a certain level of courtesy, and elegance to deal
with people and their personalities-besides containers. BUT rules are laid
down, one would think they are followed.

Of course one is expected to have insurance and stuff. Just so one does not
become a liability. I believe on such voyages certain areas are off limits,
depending on the situation, time, context. But again it is a finessing of
process and respecting limits.

I plan on doing so. Perhaps may go with an Indian vessel if possible Of
course there are the French, Japanese. Let me know if you know anyone on a
good route or can connect me. What will I do? Draw, etc. Of course others
can do the same, or think of doing the same. I am always asked for ideas,
and here this is a another one for my already highly connected Indian
friends. My situation in life has changed a bit so as I age I am moving
differently. May not be a bad idea to work as a 50 (49 now) year old
khalasi. Or a Topus in my craft-paper made, Opmus. Also lean, but
technically sound. Hahahahahaha.

Thanks again.

Dear Vasant,

Thanks for giving me evidence that Obama is a Hindu fundamentalist. I don't
think he will go to Tirupati because the evidence you have provided proves that
he is a Hindi/Gujarati speaking north Indian Hindu extremist. I have also found
out that many of his European, Hispanic, Chinese, Middle Eastern and African
appointees have links with the non-Christian governments and political parties
of India because their names appear on the websites of many Indian institutions
and organizations. He has also been repeatedly photographed with an Indian Arab
wearing a turban, who is currently the prime minister of India. It is rumored
that he has received an urn containing the water of that Indian river that is
named after a disease.

First and foremost tell me please, in English word, what do youo mean by
'Apology and Regret', give me he definition?

Secondly, who in his or her right sense would apologize for nothing or
be sorry for having done nothing wrong.

So why the question of you repeating that I retranct my words of having
disreputed you in public domain when an apology to that should have an
convincing effect on you and that should have sufficed you..

Do you feel that the specific kind of words have a special kind of
forbearance on you and an apology would be less respectful and bring
disrepute to your name and that retriving statement would have glorified
you and cruxified me.

I feel you have strange ways of getting things done, when at one stroke

So, Stop this vicious cycle that would lead you nowhere and

[Goanet] India's Growth Story - A Story of Rural India.

2010-08-08 Thread U. G. Barad

Agnelo Pinheiro has given a nice write up of the sad state of the people in
rural India. He has rightly said: "It is the need of today and tomorrow if
the growth story has to reach the common man the 'Aam Admi'."

I guess the present government, which keeps mouthing that they are all for
the Aam Admi, should be answerable for the situation. Also, let us not
forget that Indira Gandhi had coined the slogan "Garabi Hatao" in the early
1970s. Yet, something contrary is seen taking place in India i.e. "Garibi
Badao"

Dear Sir/Madam, Please can you publish my letter in your esteemed media.

Subject: Justice should prevail in the brutal murder of Vasco lad Naresh Dourado
A week has passed by after the brutal murder of the Vasco lad Naresh Dourado
and we are yet to hear of any substantial result in the investigations from the
Goa Police. Goa Police should not to leave any stones unturned and to nab the
culprits involved in this incident. We cannot ignore this incident like any
other incidents that occur in Goa.

The people of Goa need to know why this lad from Vasco was murdered in such a
brutal way. This is a matter of serious concern to the citizens of Goa knowing
that there is no security to life, in the once called Goan Paradise.
This is a prime opportunity for the Goa Police to re-instill their lost faith
in the people of Goa. If needed the Goa Police should take help from other
state police department to help them in the findings.

We the people of Goa strongly believe and hope that justice will prevail in
this case.

The following extract is from my 12-part series: "The forgotten Tribe - Mhar".
I am posting it for the benefit of those who may not have read the series:

SORCERY & EXORCISM

In today's world, if anything goes awry we call it 'bad luck.' In the past
everything was attributed to 'dixtt' (evil eye) cast by someone who was jealous
of your possessions, prosperity or even general well being. This ancient belief
was deep-rooted until the late Seventies/early Eighties.

When one was diagnosed with dixtt, he/she was taken to a dixttikar/dixtikarn -
a person who draws out the negative energies from the body and rids it of the
'evil eye'.

The Mhars or the so-called lower caste of Goan society had the powers to remove
evil eye and the tradition would automatically go down to the next generation
of the family but not if the daughter married a member of a higher caste.

Their hand was said to have the power of being able to rid one of the evil eye
- they were believed to possess powers of exorcism. The ritual of driving away
evil spirits was performed on Sundays and Wednesdays - the two days on which
these powers were believed to be activated.

Children, especially infants, are considered to be the most vulnerable and many
methods were used to thwart the evil eye. That's why children were always made
to wear black beaded cords. Black dots of kaajal were applied on the forehead,
chin and cheeks. Kaajal was also applied around a child's eyes; a black cord or
a munz was tied around the waist of a child.

People also prepared pendants with owl's nails/bones and tied them in the form
of small "pottleo" (bundles) on necklaces. Similarly, garlic is believed to be
a repellant of evil; hence, it was tied in a cloth in the form of a pottli and
added to a child's necklace.

It is believed these tools can ward off the evil eye cast by people seeing the
baby for the first time or, if they are envious of the baby's lively
personality.

When an evil eye is cast on a child, the child cries non-stop, it stops eating
and eventually falls sick. In the past, those who could afford, would take
their children to a doctor or consult the elderly and yet find no cure. Their
next stop would be a dixttikar's/dixttikarn's place.

There are two types of evil eye: One is weaker or mild, the other is of a
stronger force. Some children get well immediately, others have to visit the
dixttikar/dixttikarn, at least thrice for a complete cure.

A mild evil eye requires the dixttikar/dixttikarn to say a short prayer while
he/she sprinkles a few drops of holy water and freshly ground roots of the
addoso plant. The plant is commonly used in homes to drive away the evil eye.

Mothers are known to pray over their children and sprinkle the mixture of holy
water and addoso if they appear to be frightened or act strangely. This
practice is known as "vokot marop" (application of medicine.)

The stronger evil eye, it is believed, does not leave a person straight away.
It is believed certain people have a 'bad eye' and once cast upon a person, can
harm the person in an unhealthy way.

To rid of this evil eye, dixttikar/dixttikarn recommends three chillies, a
handful of salt; an egg, whole bread and a banana to be looped around the head
of the person in circular motions and discarded at a crossroad. This is called
'umvaddi vovdavop.' Mothers do this over their children at night and keep them
indoors till dawn.

A dixttikar/dixttikarn's tools are chilies, a piece of rock candy and one
mixture of holy water and ground addoso root. Evil eye is removed only on a
Wednesday and Sunday, the days considered auspicious for cleaning the people.

When it came to chasing away evil eye, spirits, cobras, the Mhars were simply
the best. Just like a voijinn (mid-wife / local female doctor), the Mhars were
summoned by Hindus as well as Christians to exorcise evil eye and spirits.

The Mhars were associated with their demon deities. They worshipped the
devil-god 'Maru', who lived on hilltops and treetops, especially "oddancher"
(on banyan trees.)

Whenever they wanted to drive away evil, they would call out their devil-god
thus:

"Oddavoilo Guru, Ximevoilo Maru, amche gorjek pavu."
(Oh devil-god who dwells on the banyan tree and who controls the borders,
please help us in our need.)

This is why we saw small shrines around the base of odd and pimpoll (fecus
indica) trees, where Maru was placated with offerings of miniature clay horses.
Such trees were never cut down. Here's an example:

When one enters Mapusa from Panaji, there is a roundabout with statue of
Gandhiji. During Portuguese times, there was a big 'oddachem zhadd' (banyan
tree) with many zageache sorop (snakes belonging to the spot) around it. The
Hindus lit "telacheo ponntteo" (earthe

Reading the e-mail of Mr. Mark D’ Souza, in Goanet today, in which he
states ‘In America there are no anti-conversion laws and there are no

or vandalizing Hindu temples and here in India there are anti-conversion
laws and the Hindu fundamentalist go around bashing Christian

what he has stated and I fully agree with him..

The cause for this could be that the Hindu Fanatics or the few rogue
elements who have infiltrated the Christian religious order are afraid
that in the event the Indian populace crosses to the other side of the
fence and embrace Christianity, then they would loose their true
identity, which presently allows them to do as the wish and pleased
without having to answer to God or man, whereas in U. S. of A. first

Also point of Mark and which is an eye opener; is about the Indian
Clergy, which includes priests, bishops, cardinals who preach from the

instead misusing church funds and selling church properties

needs to be closely investigated by the concerned authorities before it

Mumbai grounded
Author: Editor
Publication: Indian Express
Dated: July 29, 2010

Even to the most distant, detached of observers, it must by now be clear
that Mumbai's airport just cannot handle the city's growing traffic.

Pressure has built on the current airport, in Santa Cruz, for years; and the
civil aviation ministry has warned, over and over again, that air traffic
through Mumbai is quick approaching capacity for a single airport. And now
comes news that, in fact, the airport is beginning to cut back. Civil
Aviation Minister Praful Patel told this newspaper that "there will soon
have to be a general ban on additional flights for turboprop jets in the
private category." Even if there aren't that many of us who travel in
private turboprop aircraft regularly, enough people do visit major financial
centres of the sort Mumbai wants to be, who use planes in that category.

This is an unmistakeable signal that that long-warned-of saturation of the
airport is finally at hand.

Indeed, Patel went on to say that "without additional capacity, I can tell
you that by the end of 2011 it will become very difficult for Mumbai to take
more flights." For the business hub and largest port of a country trying for
double-digit growth, that is more than troubling: it is close to being
disastrous, and for the country as whole, not just Mumbai or Maharashtra.
And what progress has been made, you might well ask, on expanding that
capacity? Why is not another airport in the works? The answer, of course, is
that the second airport, destined for Navi Mumbai, and planned almost as
long as troubles at Santa Cruz have been foreseen, has been the victim of
lazy, dilatory, license-raj "environmentalism".

The environment ministry continues to insist that there's no rush, that we
can sit around while endless impact reports are drafted on slack
bureaucratic-academic schedules, all to save a couple of hundred acres of
mangroves. But that's not all. The land in Navi Mumbai has been identified
but the assumption now is that another 1200 contiguous hectares near Mumbai
can also be found. This laughable condescension has, of course, been shot
down by the environmental impact assessment report prepared by IIT Bombay,
which says that the Navi Mumbai site is "the most feasible and viable
location" for the second airport. But, in its continual search for cheap
applause from the green galleries, the environment ministry has
single-mindedly decided to wrap reams of red tape around the decision. It's
time for someone to tell them to cut that tape, and cut the delay.

[Goanet] "It's a Revenge Review not Tiatr Review" - Comedian Agostinho Temudo

2010-08-08 Thread Goa World

“It’s a Revenge Review not Tiatr Review”

I, Comedian Agostinho, got to know you (I repent it now), for the first
time, when I came to perform in Rosary Ferns’ Tiatr at Kuwait. At that
time, you were introduced to me as “Veronic”. But now in 2010, just as
Temudo has become “Temuz”, the years have taken its toll and ‘Veronic’
has transformed into ‘VIKH’ (Poison). That poison has contaminated your
whole body and changed you to a RABID MAD DOG. Your actions are enough
proof, as you bark at anybody and everybody, for no valid reason
whatsoever, even at religious catholic priests.

Hope you know that, or else confirm it soon, that your sole identity is,
and you are known as a ‘RABID MAD DOG’ in the whole of Kuwait.

Your dirty conscience started pricking, the moment you saw an almost
houseful audience present for my hit show “ADVOGAD”. If there were very
less spectators, you would have been very happy and would have enjoyed
your sadistic pleasures from the core of your rotten heart.

The timings of my tiatr coincided with the live telecast of one of the
best matches of the World Cup, between Brazil and Portugal , teams which
are cherished and have a huge fan following amongst Goans. In spite of
this, I take pride in revealing to a mad jealous dog like you, that my
show was patronized by the likes of Mr. Gaspar Crasto, Mr. Britto, and
scores of football lovers and football players themselves. This goes on
to prove my worth. If any other Tiatr was to be staged that day at the
same time instead of ADVOGAD directed by ‘Kalcho Porcho’ Director, the
ground reality would have been totally different.

I don’t rest on my laurels. But it is a proven fact and a record (Please
Rabid dog, note it down on your personal diary in red ink) that I am the
only Konkani tiatrist to perform 18 times at Kuwait, 4 times in my
Tiatrs viz., SIR, POLICE I , POLICE II & ADVOGAD and the rest of the 14
times under different Directors, including Kuwait based Directors viz.
Laurente Pereira, Mario de Majorda, Rosary Ferns, Comedian Philip, Jose
Rod, KGTS, etc.

Undoubtedly, this speaks volumes that my comedy and my Tiatrs are liked
and relished by Goan Tiatr lovers and the legion of my fans, to whom I
am grateful from the bottom of my heart, and thank them profusely for
the support, love and affection showered upon me. May God bless them
all. With all this support, I can tread like a Giant and crush a Rabid
Mad Dog like you under my feet.

Getting back to the so called ‘Review”, let me clarify that my troupe
and myself arrived at 2 p.m. and were all set to perform by 3.30 p.m.
Since the venue was new to most of the people, they were finding it
difficult to find the same and were phoning my organizers that they are
on their way. As such, I had to wait for the contractor’s green signal
and hence the delay. This fact was announced a couple of times by your
good friend, Mr. Rosary Ferns, which you failed to hear, understandably,
because you are turning deaf due to your old age. How about sponsoring
you a HEARING AID DEVICE?

And yes, sadly, the GOAN STD TIME was, is and will be followed for ages
by our susegado Goans. It is beyond our realm to change it, try as we
may. And I can assure you, cent per cent, that the GST will be followed
at your last voyage, your funeral, wherever held on Earth.

Regarding the storyline; Rape IS NOT a cheap topic. It is a hot topic,
as there have been so many rape and murder cases in Goa , which have
brought a bad name to all upright Goans. Through my humble writing, I
have tried to show its ill effects on the victims and to educate and
expose the unscrupulous ADVOGADS who try to shield such perpetrators.
For selfish people like you, who bury their heads in the sand like
ostriches and who believe in “One for oneself, God for all”, rape is a
cheap topic, but it will become hot one day if someone rapes your
immediate kin or your aged wife.

I humbly agree that I am an immature Director. But I can shout from my
rooftop, that, in spite of being an immature Director with only 8
productions, I have scored a double century within a span of 13 months
from its release, my super duper hit POLICE, a feat rarely achieved, not
even by more mature directors.

I may be immature, but not an educated illiterate like you, who is
turning senile by the passage of time.

Before I clarify about the songs, please identify my actors correctly,
or get your vision corrected. You called JAJU – Juju and Salu D’Souza
was reported as Salu Faleiro, so much for your corrupt knowledge !!

The Trio on religious amity, sung by JAJU-XAV-SAL, was my subject but
composed by Xavier Gomes. The Duet sung by Selvy-Anita was also my idea,
composed by Francis de Tuem, and once again, the Duo sung by Roma &
Steffi was also my subject, penned by Benny Rebello.

I state without fear, that the story idea, writing and direction is
totally my baby. Every word in the comedy sequences is my p

finds resonance in almost every society which draws a parallel to the
agricultural cycle of death and rebirth.

The recent hullabaloo raised by right-wing groups, the HJS and the SS, in
Goa over Dr Jose Pereira's pictorial interpretations of Hindu mythology and
specifically his interpretation of Krishna's relationship with Radha, are
worrying on two accounts. First it seeks to expunge any hint of sexuality in
mythology. There is a renaissance of the old puritanical vice of associating
sex with impropriety; a demeaning of the spiritual and sullying of all
things pure. Yet, scholars have found many similarities between Krishna and
the Greek God Dionysus, among which are their fondness for women. Sexuality
was linked to fertility which was absolutely essential for the propagation
of life, the promise of which was tenuous at best. Sexuality was not to be
curtailed; in fact it was to be encouraged by all means.

The second more worrying aspect is the increasing need by radicalized Hindus
to claim proprietorial rights over Hindu mythology and then to interpret it
as a reality rather than as analogy. Imagine for a moment if Greeks and
Egyptians suddenly claim ownership of their respective mythologies. These
have been studied by scholars across the world totally devoid of any
religious connotation and yet these too were venerated deities at one time.
How absurd would it be if the Greeks took umbrage every time the frivolous
Cupid was flashed across Valentine cards. Surely, there is an understanding
that these ancient wisdoms are not the property of any one particular
culture or religious sect. Rather they are universally owned now, in the
public domain for all to study and interpret as they wish. Their
interpretation by "outsiders" are not to be viewed with suspicion and anger.

Perhaps even more regressive is the need to find a reality in what is
essentially a myth. Our understanding of science and our natural world, must
necessarily mean that we accord mythology its rightful place. Perhaps, as
Deepak Chopra suggests, as archetypes that live on in our human
consciousness. But certainly the wind Gods, the fire Gods, Zeus, Apollo,
Hera, the stealing of fire by Prometheus or the abduction of Persephone by
Hades is not a reality. This obsessive need to translate what is essentially
myth into a reality has caused untold misery in India. It has brought down
mosques, caused riots, resulted in carnage, the exile of one of my valued
artists and almost every other month some other treachery is threatened on
anyone who dares to "misinterpret" that which has now become private
property of a few self-appointed custodians.

Dialogue and serious scholarly study in a free society should never cease.
What sullies religious and theological profundity or cultural traditions is
not alternative interpretations but threats to have these interpretations
stifled and indeed literally cut off. When we speak of cutting off the hands
of our greatest intellectuals, we in fact cut off the voice of our most
profound thoughts.

This sadly is not the sign of a progressive society but rather one that is
in regression.

[Goanet] Goa project- some pictures.

2010-08-08 Thread Edgar de Montreal
Some pictures from a project I am working on folks holding on to their
possessions/their identity in an environment where their properties
and possessions are targets by real estate, antique dealers and other
assorted '**". Anyway, these pictures need to be re-worked but I'm
posting them anyways.

Here is a picture from 2005 (taken with a point and shoot and in
passing, so not very clear) from a chapel which was being repaired;
the person from the area informed that the piece was stolen (I think I
posted this earlier). Apparently some antique dealers had offered to
buy the piece some time ago.

[Goanet] AISI: Our 9 hours at Goa Legislative Assembly/Complex (a pictorial report)

2010-08-08 Thread JoeGoaUk
AISI: Our 9 hours at Goa Legislative Assembly/Complex

Entry Passes:
There is a form to fill in and obtain any MLA’s signature
on it.  You will then be issued a pass.
Best is to get it from your local MLA, as they have their
own quota.

We were there at 10.45 but we were refuse entry saying
it is too early.
Then we came back after 11 and at 11.15 all gallery
seating full up.
They say there is no room to accommodate 25 old members
of public (including us 3)  with valid entry passes with mention
of respective block number on it.

The situation there reminded me of Indian Railways
General Compartment/bogie
Where any number of tickets are issued e.g. for a
71 seater bogie over 200 tickets issued.

Public Galleries:
There are in all 6, one of which reserved for the Press
http://www.flickr.com/photos/joegoauk27/4868285202/

but press or media men seen in all galleries.
Each gallery has about 50 chairs so the seating capacity
of the house for general public is about 250.
Guess what? Out of this, over 200 school children
were occupying the gallery at one time including the steps/floor.
4 Galleries were full of school kids
>From 4/5 different schools  see pic
http://www.flickr.com/photos/joegoauk27/4867676769/

This was not very nice which result in denying others
with valid passes.
They had to wait till 12.30 when the school kids
vacated their seats/gallery.
After the lunch time, there were two more school
batches occupied the two galleries.
How we managed to get in just on time?
Well, a door keeper (Migrant, Pvt ‘Active Security’) was
kind enough to let us in, when we said we don’t mind
seating on the floor/steps.  Inside, we found two vacant chairs.

Security:
What about the security at the main entrance?
I must say, it was not up to the mark.
No frisking at all.
We were carrying cameras and mobiles and we got away
with it.
(the cameras which we were carrying could have been something else
but this is something for the security dept
to seriously look into i.e. Security lapse I mean)

However, the Pass (reverse of it) clearly says
No mobile, Cameras, hand bags, umbrellas, sticks, books etc

see pic
http://www.flickr.com/photos/joegoauk27/4867691107/
But almost all MLAs had mobile with them in the house.
Even, I saw a mobile like thing on speaker’s desk

Another interesting part was the pass also said..
‘Visitors should not sit with crossed legs’
I really don’t know what it means or even if I know what
harm it makes?
More than half of the MLAs in the house seen with
their crossed legs and it could be all of them as camera
cannot see all 40 MLAs from one angle.
However, whatever was possible is capture here, see this pic.
MLAs with crossed legs
http://www.flickr.com/photos/joegoauk27/4870857429/sizes/l/

The session starts at 11.30
At this time the house was about half full.
Later comers were
Babush 11.50
Nerri 11.55
Davlikar 12
Churchill 12
Reginaldo 12.05
Francis Silveira 12.40
Mauvin 2.30
Joaquim 2.30
Ravi 2.30  etc etc

Although there are breaks such as lunch time/ Tea time etc
MLAs are seen going in and out as often as possible.
At one time there were less than 16 legislators in the house
of 40.
Speakers keep on talking but for whom?
Even the Speaker of the house seen busy going through
the docs etc
And the speakers/MLAs  keep referring to ‘Speaker Sir’
in their speeches as if speaker listens to them all the time.
Digu is missing, Parrikar is missing, babush is missing
and so on and the speeches after speeches keep on going.

When the no confidence motion against the
Speaker Rane taken up,
there was a full house.  And the motion was defeated
by 23/14 head counts/votes.
Jr. Rane and Anil seen sitting as if they voted against
the speaker.
Visvajit being not an MLA, I think he is not allowed to vote.

At least two members in their speech said
‘Rane is like their fatherly figure for he is in the house
35 years’.  But Rane confirmed in his speech that he is
infact 38 years experience legislator.

Opposition labeled the Rane as ‘not neutral as speaker’
They even referred to newspapers ‘Hindu’ etc  which
reported the then Assembly (31/8/07) incidence
as  ‘Constitutional fraud’

Mr. Parrikar said to Sudin Davlikar
(Minister for Social Welfare) that
he can easily obtain (by paying bribe) an income Certificate
in the name of  Sudin/Minister showing his income
just Rs.5,000.

Our St. Andre MLA Francis Silveira made a demand that
Agassaim Police station should have one 108 ambulance,
a hospital at  Neura/Mandur besides a
‘Che-pel’ and a temple at Goa medical College.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/joegoauk27/4868283040/

Speaker Rane in his speech said to Parrikar

a chance to talk too’

Swindlers, Church of Painted Breast and other stories

Armed robbers have held and continued to hold the nation hostage. Some
civil servants are sharing the common wealth in the name of Christmas
bonus. Some politicians use human beings for rituals in order to get
power and loot the treasury. Many contractors collect billions of
naira to fix our poor infrastructure, but pocket the money and do
nothing. The petrol attendant manipulates the pumping machine to
short-change the unwary customer.

The entire system is rotten. We have been oscillating between one
scandal and the other: Ettehgate; Siemens scandal; Wilbros scam;
national ID card swindle; power sector scam; Christmas bonus loot and
so on. There seems to be no end in sight. No leader seems to believe
in Nigeria. The mantra appears to be, grab as much loot as possible as
there may not be any Nigeria tomorrow.

We are undoing ourselves and nobody else. This is why almost every
young Nigerian wants to run away from the country. I met a young man
recently at Imo Concord Hotel, Owerri. He desperately wanted to leave
Nigeria. He asked me how much it would cost him to travel to London to
either work or do business. My advice that he should continue with his
work at the hotel fell on deaf ears. He enthused that he had just got
his passport (as if passport is all that is needed to travel abroad)
and his parents really wanted him to leave Nigeria. In 2007 alone, the
United States Department of Homeland Security reportedly deported
about 50,000 Nigerians from that country.

Nigerians face humiliating treatment from other Western nations. Some
are serving various jail sentences abroad. And Foreign Affairs
Minister, Ojo Maduekwe, thinks he is doing them a favour by asking
them to serve their jail terms at home. The minister complained last
week that Nigerian prisoners abroad had rejected his
come-and-complete-your-sentences-at-home application. According to
him, Nigeria will demand respect, fair and lawful treatment for her
citizens even when they allegedly commit crimes.

Maduekwe gladdened my heart when he was quoted to have said, ”To
create the kind of loyalty that Nigeria deserves, we must go back and
ensure effective and responsible governance that touches on the lives
of the people.” Until leaders at all levels imbibe this exhortation,
Nigerians will continue to troop out and commit crimes. And foreigners
will always treat us as a people who can do such foolish things as
painting their breasts to swindle a church.

Unfortunately, as a lay person, one did not understand how to size the

Re: [Goanet] ravindra kelekar

2010-08-08 Thread floriano

COMMENTS:

Let me relate some tidbits that I have been told about this still living
great Konkani Language scion - Ravindra Kelekar.

1963-1965 he immersed himself to defend Goa's heritage, it's Language
KONKANI and thereby mount a fight against Bandodkar's Merger of Goa into
Maharashtra. It is believed that there were only a handful of persons [ 4 to
5] who were with him, believing in what he believed, i.e. that KONKANI is
the bonafide LANGUAGE of Goans and therefore it must be preserved at all
costs. Practically the Goan Hindu world believed to the contrary i.e. that
Konkani was a dialect of Marathi and therefore of no consequence. This
wide-spread attitude of the Goan Hindu world made Ravindra Kelekar
altogether a laughing stalk A member of the Indian National Congress, he got
his break when young and vibrant Victoria Fernandes wanted to try her hand
at politics, approached him at the Congress House. One thing led to another
and gauging her burning desire to do something, Ravindra Kelekar challenged
her to muster a strenght of just 10 to fifteen women. When she shot back "I
will get 50", he was a little skeptical. But spektical no more when she
came to him with 50 women who wanted to do something, and thereafter the
fight never dimmed, especially with 'NAVI XHALA' a potent Konkani
publication. Enter Manoharai Sardesai, a graduate of Sorborne Uninversity,
France, Shankar Bhandari of Cumbarjua, Udai Bhembre and possibly other few
stalwarts for Konkani and against Merger, the fight was now rolling.

Today's Goadoot edition has brought out a piece on Dr. Euclido Manuel
Francisco Ramiro D'Souza, born 3 February 1921; died 31 July, 2010, another
die-hard Konkani protagonist from Cuncolim who still, it is believed, has
the house name plate announcing the name as SESHGIRI SURIA VAMSHI. Ravidra
Kelekar, no doubt will be honoured after his death to be standing side by
side Dr. Euclido Manuel Francisco Ramiro D'Souza for their achievements
for GOA in the company of the Goan stalwart Francisco Luis Gomes who, it is
said that when prompted by the great French poet Lamartin as to who he was,
had replied that he a person who comes from the race who composed Mahabarata
and who gave the game of Chess to the world.

There always have been a clear 'earning' in my heart to visit Ravindra
Kelekar and have a one to one chat with him. Therefore, a year or so ago, I
did manage to get a slot to meet with him at his Priol spread accompanied
by my colleague in the party, Dr. N.S. Dumo, who has always held Ravindra
Kelekar in highest of esteem for what he has done for Konkani and for Goa
vis a vis Merger. In Dr. Dumo's own words "I have grown up a total Goan but
with the background of Marathi. And I had thought that Ravindra Kelekar's
fight for Konkani was such a waste of time, until I realized that Konkani
did have a statutory place as Goa's Official Language - My hats off to him".
However, the meeting was a 'damp squib' and a big disapointment for a person
who want to see the Goa fighters glow, as I found that frail but still
alert Ravindra Kelekar only wanted to bask in the glory of his creditable
achievements for Konkani and for Goa and had no more stamina to likewise
bring about the downfall of his own dear Congress Party who was destroying
his dear dear Goa for which he has incessantly fought so hard. And I wonder
if he ever did have a moment of spare time or the desire to leaf through the
'Road Map for GOA' that I had presented to him and when he had promised to
go through it and let me know what he thought of it.

However, I shall keep my memoirs alive of having met and talked to this
great Goan Scion and I shall certainly pay my last respects to him when the
time comes for him to depart, all for Goa and for Konkani.

Cheers

"do you mean that only about 7 hectares would be left for spatial planning"
Arch. Edgar Ribeiro who was taking down notes while we were discussing
(not a presentation before RP task force) on Oct. 7, 2007 at CM's
residence asked me...
"yes, that's it and therefore the whole RP business does not make sense to me"
I had replied.
Now the government admits in the assembly that RP-2021 excludes 297400
hectares of ecosensitive areas.
A fact which forest (govt. and private forests, mangroves) ,
agriculture, water resources (command areas) , environment (CRZ) etc.
depts. always knew and about which I had always written.
Goa's total area is (after excluding 700 hactres of area under island
of Anjedives surrendered to Indian Navy) stands at 370300 ha.
Delete 297400 of statutorily covered ecosensitive area.
Then we are left with just 72900 ha. for any sort of land use planning.
Remember this area is distributed over 189 village panchayats, 13
municipal councils and the CCP. A simple calculation would show on
average just about 360 ha. per local authority.
and for such a minuscule area Goa needs a regional Plan to tie
everyone's hands legally, technically, cartographically-for next 11
years, esp. in villages!. A plan which no other smaller or larger
state or union territory in India is interested to prepare. A plan
which government views academically and as the panchayat minister has
assured-" Illegal constructions can be legalized"
Let us see the galaxy of saints who would implement the new regional
plan for a mighty area of 72900 hectares (hundreds of talukas or
tehsils in India are larger than this).
An excellent example of how civil society in Goa wastes its' energy.
Now it would be difficult to jump from the RP-2021 ship!
be sure that by next assembly election people of Goa would be stripped
of all their powers except casting the ballots!

Piecing together the fascinating story of Goan migration

Devika Sequeira in Panaji
devikaseque...@gmail.com

Murumbi had studied
in two schools in
Bangalore and Bellary

Joseph Murumbi perhaps best epitomises the complex, yet
fascinating story of Goan migration. The son of a Goan trader
and a Maasai woman, Murumbi (1911-1990) born Joseph
Murumbi-Zuzarte was the first foreign minister of independent
Kenya and went on to become the country's vice-president
under Jomo Kenyatta. He resigned that post in under a year
after the assassination of Goan-Kenyan freedom fighter Pio
Gama Pinto.

One of the greatest collectors of African art,
Murumbi and his wife Sheila co-founded the African
Heritage Pan-African Art Gallery with Alan Donovan.
The Murumbi Peace Memorial was put up in tribute to
their memory in the Nairobi City Park.

Murumbi's father Peter Nicholas Zuzarte's intrepid journey
from the North Goa village of Guirim to Baringo, Kenya in
1897 is just one of the many highly engaging accounts of Goan
migration retold by London-based Selma Carvalho in 'Into The
Diaspora Wilderness'. He set sail from Bombay to Aden, and
then in a German boat for the port of Zanzibar, arriving in
Mombassa on a dhow.

Possessed of a steely determination, he walked from Mombassa
to Baringo, a distance of over 600 kilometres," she writes.
Zuzarte set up the Londiani Trading Company in Baringo, where
he met the daughter of a Maasai medicine man. The
relationship would eventually break up, with Zuzarte marrying
Ezalda Clara Albuquerque, already a mother of nine.

Murumbi moved with his father to his new family and at six,
says Carvalho, was sent to school India, first to Good
Shepherd School Convent and later to St Joseph's High School,
both in Bangalore. A detail perhaps little known is that he
passed out of St Pancras European Boys High School, Bellary.

Carvalho's book, set for its India-launch in early
August, started a little over two years ago when
she felt the urge to tell her own story in the
diaspora.  Her family moved to Dubai and from there
to other parts of the world. "I didn't want to tell
the story in a vacuum and so I began constructing
the economic and political backdrop to it," she
says of the collection of personal, family and
community stories picked up from long days of
interviews and hours of sifting through archival
  material.

Intriguingly much of the material for the Africa chapters was
right there in England, where Carvalho is based.

"The East Africa diaspora are now residents of the UK or
Canada, having left Africa in the aftermath of
post-Independence Africanisation policies. The stories of a
bygone era were waiting to be told and I was an avid
listener. I am only the narrator. It is their story which
lives now only in their ageing memory."

Etched into our memory now is the account of the
acerbic British historian and explorer Richard
Burton who set out on his 1856 East Africa
expedition accompanied by two Goan servants and
Captain Hanning Speke. Thrown into a completely new
and terrifying environment, nothing could have
prepared Valentine Andrade and Caetano Rodrigues
for the "severity of Africa", Carvalho writes. But
the men survived and on one occasion, one of them
had to dive into crocodile infested waters to
  recover Burton's gun.

Thousands of Goans have worked as cooks and stewards on board
British ships, returning after long journeys to do up their
family houses in the villages. In more recent years, young
Goan men armed with the Portuguese citizenship (Goans are
still entitled to one) have headed to the UK. With some 8,000
Goans now estimated to live there, Swindon has possibly the
most robust concentration of Goans in the UK, says Carvalho.

Back in Goa, with so many young men migrating from the
village, the parish priest of Agacaim has been hard put to
assemble a village football team.

"Because human beings are constantly in a state of evolution,
we want to find comfort in the past while charting a future.
I merely responded to this longing in my writing," says
Carvalho who believes the stories of Goans who left its
shores are as integral to piecing the community's collective
identity as of those that stayed behind.

Obama has always been a closet Hindu-he appointed Sonal Shah to a high position
inspite of Opposition from the Indian American secularists. She was accused of
RSS links. He also has admitted carrying a Hanuman idol at all times for good
luck.
Last month his administration announced that it had appointed Preeta D. Bansal
to serve as the Vice Chair (Government Official) of the Council of the
Administrative Conference of the U.S. (ACUS). Ms. Bansal’s appointment follows
closely on the heels of a similar announcement last week, of Nisha Desai
Biswal, who was nominated to the post of Assistant Administrator for Asia in
the
U.S. Agency for International Development.

When their appointments are confirmed, the two women will join the large and
growing club of Indian-American and Hindu Obama appointees, which already
includes Rajiv Shah, Administrator, USAID, Vivek Kundra, Federal Chief
Information Officer and Aneesh Chopra, First Chief Technology Officer.
There are rumours in Indonesia-that his mother secretly baptised him as a Hindu
in Bali and probably this explains why his half sister is named Maya.
Now one hears that he is behind the conversion of Julia Roberts to Hinduism and
that the movie Eat,Pray and Love is financed by Islamic Sympathisers of Obama
from the Middle East and Kenya.
Watch out-there are rumours that India's God Kings will accompany the Obamas to
Tirupati during his visit in November.
Cheers
Vasant

In one week, you are an expert on another subject. In your spam mail on this
topic, you plagiarized the article about plagiarism as well as violated its
copyright protection.  For the former you should be ashamed. For the latter you
could get financial penalties.  But I digress, as previously stated, I am not
an
expert on this topic.

They tell me that I am good.  But even I know, this supurlo goenkar is not that
good.  I can only do one DRE (digital rectal exam) at a time.  Right now I am
dealing with your "you-know-what." Perhaps like a good friend (providing
protection when things get hard), you are doing him a 'por favor'.

So once he convinces us that his writings do not fall into category of
plagiarism, I will address your 'sodachem' bogus concerns and claims. Please do
not tell me that his TGF (This Goan Forum) website passed through the
anti-plagiarism software program.  I hope our friendly expert does not go
silent
on us, when it comes to applying his plagiarism theories to his own practice.

Till we accomplish the above, please sit on your hands and keep your fingers
busy; instead of working your keyboard.  Let us hope we can do the above before
the weekend ends.  I thought you were tired of me analyzing your writings. I
certainly am. That should be a relief for you for now for another two
weeks.

Right now, do not come close to us. I do not know what JC will do during
the DRE.  And some of his could splash on you. I may have to do a two-finger
DRE
...  just to get a 'second opinion'.:=))  This is a likely possibility,
especially if he weasels.  Over the few years, he has been weaseling a lot on
this topic, both on-and-off goanet.

Some goanetters are likely having their weekend laughs.  Please do not do it
too
loudly. You may wake the chickens and neighbors.

Regards, GL

Gilbert appears to be trying to insult other Goans and members of other Goan
mailing lists once again. He was asked to do the honorable thing and retract
his falsehoods when he did this repeatedly the last time, and lied about one of
these mailing lists on Goanet in the following post:

http://lists.goanet.org/pipermail/goanet-goanet.org/2010-July/196590.html

Please see my earlier request for retraction:

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/GoenchimXapotam/message/28965

This is my third reminder to Gilbert to retract his calumny on Goanet.

Furthermore, in the present post, for some reason he has also injected
unnecessary confusion into the legal definition of plagiarism, without
providing any reference to an authentic original source for his claims. It is
clear that he has foolishly confused copyright with plagiarism. I provide below
the correct legal definition of plagiarism:

QUOTE
Intentional or unintentional use of another's words or ideas without
acknowledging this use constitutes plagiarism: There are four common forms of
plagiarism:

* The duplication of an author's words without quotation marks and accurate
references or footnotes.
* The duplication of author's words or phrases with footnotes or accurate
references, but without quotation marks.
* The use of an author's ideas in paraphrase without accurate references or
footnotes.
* Submitting a paper in which exact words are merely rearranged even though
footnoted.

[Goanet] S.C.O.G.O.....

2010-08-08 Thread Gabe Menezes
.stands for ''Standing Conference Of Goan Organisations'' This was a
grouping of the G.O.A. (U.K.) together with the Vullage Associations in the
U.K.

It was disbanded at an A.G.M. without having been put on the Agenda. I was
present at that meeing when it was decided that the G.O.A. would take on the
Annual Festival as its own baby, the Village Associations had no input and
were not consulted.

This was wrongly done and needs to be corrected. The various Village
Associations need to be invited along with the broader umbrella of people
concerned, to determine whether they wish to disband S.C.O.G.O.

Former S.C.O.G.O. Presidents need to call a meeting to redress this
injustice perpetrated upon the Members of S.C.O.G.O.; should the Village
Associations take it lying down?

[Goanet] Cardinal attacks US over Lockerbie bomber reaction

2010-08-08 Thread Gabe Menezes
Cardinal attacks US over Lockerbie bomber reaction
[image: Cardinal Keith O'Brien] Cardinal O'Brien said the Scottish
government had done nothing wrong

The leader of the Roman Catholic Church in Scotland has attacked the US over
the release of the Lockerbie bomber.

Cardinal Keith O'Brien said the Scottish government was right to free
Abdelbaset Ali al-Megrahi last year on compassionate grounds.

US lawmakers want Scots politicians to explain their decision to a committee
but the cardinal said ministers should not go "crawling like lapdogs".

He said Scotland had a culture of care, while the US was fixed on vengeance.

Scottish Justice Secretary Kenny MacAskill released Megrahi, who has
prostate cancer, after being told that three months was a "reasonable
estimate" of his life expectancy.
'Invidious company'

However, he is still alive after almost a year and the decision continues to
provoke anger in the United States, which was home to 189 of the 270 people
killed on board Pan Am flight 103 in 1988.

In an interview with BBC Scotland, Cardinal O'Brien said Americans were too
focused on retribution.

"In many states - more than half - they kill the perpetrators of horrible
crimes, by lethal injection or even firing squad - I say that is a culture
of vengeance," he said.

"An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth - that is not our culture in
Scotland and I would like to think that the US government, and these states
that do still have capital punishment, would learn something from us."
[image: Megrahi shortly after release] Abdelbaset Ali al-Megrahi was
released last August

The cardinal said Americans should "direct their gaze inwards" rather than
scrutinise how the Scottish justice system worked.

He said the use of the death penalty meant the US kept "invidious company"
with countries like Saudi Arabia and Iran.

"In some states it's month by month now that they are killing people who
have a right to live, whatever they've done wrong," he said.

He also backed the Scottish government's decision not to give evidence to
American senators investigating Megrahi's release.

"The Scottish government has made the decision and the Scottish government
is answerable to the Scottish people - not the US government or US citizens.

"Everyone acted according to Scots law in releasing Megrahi on compassionate
grounds, having taken medical advice.

"I still think they did the right thing, although the man is still alive.

"We shouldn't be crawling out to America, or having them come here and
questioning us on our own territory."

discouraged by government7) Experts and consultants and God knows how much
corruption and kick-backs indulged 8)Beach ruined permanently and at present
endangering all our beaches 9)Now we have Salgaonkar Mining Industries
repeatedly appealing to Government in many front page advertisements in all the
dailies stating they will give Performance Guarantee to complete removal by
June 2011 at no cost to government !Anil Salgaoncars conscience pricking, making

[Goanet] The Meaning and "Greatness" of any Art---in terms of collective consciousness

2010-08-08 Thread Venantius J Pinto
Worth a read. In a similar vein Hindus and other should consider putting out
thoughts on shall we say "The Meaning and Greatness of Hindu Art (leading
into contemporaneity), art from a Hindu awareness, or plan INDIAN art."

I am at least 15 years away from writing from/for the Hindu side; ie., of
course, if no one else does (it is very difficult needless to say), or my
interests change change even further, and if I do not completely move into
oblivion. Part of it is also that I am not a scholar, in the way I
understand that form of knowing, and do not wish even a quarter-baked
scholar to attempt to go after me. There are better things to do with ones
time.
One need more methodology to include of course the qualitative.

But I trust that the progeny of the mahants, our erudite litterateurs both
Hindus and Christians, also of assorted high-profile businessman and
scholars will rectify the paucity of expressive texts connecting the visual
to the spiritual, to the existential, and to lived aesthetics.

Read John Berger's "Ways of Seeing," and also Ben Shahn's The Shape of
Content, as eloquent texts in forming understanding.
