What a fine job those young people (Victor Hugo Gomes Aldina) have done. Guided tour and absolutely splendiferous luncheon, with charge of 500 each only. Tried to make up in Donation Box. The lunch itself would have been twice that in most of the restaurants. Great day-tour item, but better check their 'goachitramuseum' web site [http://www.goachitra.com/] to let them know how many to expect, particularly if ordering lunch. It's a one-hour car drive from Panjim, and quite accessable by the Panjim-Margao-Benaulim mini-bus system as well. [Goanet] GCA IS LYING
--- http://www.GOANET.org --- Goanet mourns the passing of Cornel da Costa in London, England - Sep 10/10 --- Goa Cricket Association President Mr. Dayanand Narvekar’s claim that GCA does not come within the ambit of RTI Act as it has not received any assistance from the government is grossly incorrect. It is contrary to the factual position and the stand taken by his own government that the GCA has been a beneficiary of government largesse. An example at hand is the land admeasuring 1,30,328 sq meters at Tivim which has been leased by the Goa Government to the GCA on a 99 year lease at a nominal rent of Rs 50,000/- per year for the construction of a cricket stadium. The BCCI may have not taken any assistance from the government but the GCA has definitely. The GCA President should dare show us the Supreme Court judgment that he claims has declared that BCCI does not come under the RTI Act. Infact Delhi High Court has clearly ruled that the BCCI may be a private body, but it performs a public function and therefore comes under Article 226 of India’s Constitution (public scrutiny). The RTI Act ensures that there is transparency and accountability in the functioning of any organization. Why is the GCA so loathe to subject itself to public scrutiny unless it has something to hide? I can assure former Law Minister Mr. Dayanand Narvekar that on the RTI issue regardless of all its batting and fielding the GCA will be clean bowled. [Goanet] Introducing new members on Goanet
--- http://www.GOANET.org --- Goanet mourns the passing of Cornel da Costa in London, England - Sep 10/10 --- Herman Carneiro wrote : Subject: [Goanet] Goanet Initiative: Introducing New Members on Goanet Dear Goanetters, An active Goanetter from Goa, retired principal Tony de Sa of Moira, has volunteered to present brief profile of active (and not so active) Goanetters, so that we could get to know each other better. Tony plans to begin his postings, around once a week, starting from October 2010. He plans to approach some Goanetters off-list to seek your inputs in describing yourself. These introductions will be posted on Goanet in random order. We encourage you to participate, so that we can get to know each other better on this active and time-tested 16-year-old network. Meanwhile, this year, we have also started a Goanet Classifieds occasional column. It is meant to share 'news you can use' by way of free classifieds. Non-profits and small businesses are requested to send in their inputs to i...@goanet.org with GOANET CLASSIFIEDS in the subject line. Please trust our volunteers' decision in the suitability of carrying your post, and how often it could be repeated, if at all. Comments : Camilo Fernandes I appreciate the efforts being made to present brief profiles of active and not so active Goanetters so that we could know each other better as well as the GOANET CLASSIFIEDS on goanet. This will be a boon to all Goans wherever they are based. While on this subject recently a Goan was asking me if there is any reputed Goan matrimonial non profitable site which could help Goans to have wider choice in finding their soul mate. As I am not aware of any, I was wondering if it would be a good idea to have a matrimonial site on GOANET giving the minimum details for one to post and then get in touch if found suitable. I was on the site http://mangalorean.com/ which like GOANET keeps all Mangloreans in touch giving developments in Mangalore and issues relevant to Mangaloreans. They also have a marriage site where one can register free of cost just by having a user name for logging in and accessing it with a password. To search for a suitable partner they need to have basic details like : Gender: Age: Religion ancestral origin: Location: Marital Status: Residency Status: Mother Tongue: Qualification: Occupation: Height: Body: Complexion: Smoke: Drink: About Myself: About My Family: CONTACT DETAILS : Email : To search for a suitable partner on this site, the format is as under : Looking for MALE or FEMALE Age: From to . Location : --(Name the country) orDoes nto matter. The site is not responsible for the genuineness of the contents. It is only an opportunity to have wider choice in selection of your life partner and to progress if you find suitable person meeting your requirements. The person can then contact the email and progress further. I know generally Goans are outgoing and find their life partners through family, friends, work place or contacts. However many Goans may find it difficult to find better choice for lack of contacts/opportunities and I feel this would be an ideal opportunity for them. I am just sharing my thoughts and am not sure whether this is worth a try. I would welcome feedback or suggestions from other Goanetters. I must mention that if this is introduced, GOANET is in no way responsible for any contents. Best wishes, DEV BOREM KORUM Camilo Fernandes

Total: Rs 42,46,602. Airline counters must love the sight of him in these days of crippling aviation fuel costs and price wars. So does the Kerala-based Centre for Development Studies (CDS) which was paid Rs 20L to do that Goa Migration Study 2008 which I am positive if you googled, you could learn more about the subject. Or, simply choose to ask any one of the many Goan associations abroad which I can vouch will give you authentic answers. Because, talking migration and identity loss has a richly stimulating effect on quite a few Goans these days. Which is perhaps what Faleiro had in mind to be fair to him, but he got his modus operandi all wrong. Praise the Lord for tax money Hallelujah. You can almost hear Faleiro saying that. But shed tears for the tax-payer. I have not seen the report but I wonder how CDS could have researched; 1) The magnitudes and dimensions of migration from Goa and return migration to Goa; 2) Assess annual flow and estimation of remittances from Goan emigrants; 3) Study socio-economic effect of migration on households; 4) Understand rehabilitation issues of return emigrants; within a short span of time. Because the 2008 report was released (released, not handed over to Faleiro) on June 2, 2009. Bingo, Faleiro did make an expensive trip to Kerala on May 10-17, 2009 that cost you Rs 1,39,781 which I know makes you wonder because for that price you could fly around the world. The researchers would have had to run through entire Goa to research any one of the parameters, leave alone all three in so short a time. In fact, it would be interesting to evaluate the flow of remittances if at all the researchers got within even an arm’s length of the figures. I doubt if the Reserve Bank of India has a ballpark figure considering the complexities involved and types (including destinations from) of remittances. Who approved the research methodology? Say a short prayer for Goa University which has at least some Goans and as a result could have done a better job. At least GU would have been answerable to the Goan tax-payer. During that time Feb 2006-June 2010 Faleiro’s rent-free NRI office cost you Rs 67,63,055 on salaries. He gave out grant-in-aid of Rs 30L, that is Rs 20L in 2007-08, Rs 5L each in 2008-09 and 2009-10. Advertising his feats cost Rs 17,72,223. Professional services cost Rs 1,65,717. Other charges, whatever that is, took up Rs 1,60,37,914, I kid you not. Bottomline, while his flying cost Rs 42,46,602, office expenses cost Rs 2,89,00,660. What did it achieve? Positively nothing, apart from the partying at conventions abroad, that is. Green grass on the other side If you think there must have been some positive gains from all that expenditure, think again. After all Churchill Alemao, who knows best what is good for south Goa (and now Karwar too) did say all those mega housing projects provide jobs to Goans as security guards. Then believe this, because under the head achievements, this is what the Under Secretary, Home Department, Foreigner’s Citizenship Division, has to say: 1) “The OEAG has imparted skill up-gradation and foreign orientation”. 2) On the migration study: “Goa is the second State after Kerala to have done a scientific migration study”. 3) “Goa Cards have been issued to nearly 500 Goan expatriates so far on request on payment of Rs 250. Holders get faster access and better attention from government offices and the benefits include concessions by government undertakings, private hospitals, and hotels.” 4) The Goa Buildings (Lease, Rent and Eviction) Control Act, 1968 was amended to protect the property rights

--- http://www.GOANET.org --- Goanet mourns the passing of Cornel da Costa in London, England - Sep 10/10 --- Gabe's contemplative writing will not come as a surprise to Goans. To what he wrote, there are experiences where people take advantage of help and kindness. Yet all of us have many experiences of receiving a lot of help from total strangers. And sometimes nothing from people one would have thought / expected / or counted-on for help. In helping others, we should not expect any return-favors from the particular person. But favors are returned in the large scheme of things. Often making someones' day does not involve cost or sacrifice. A warm smile, helping someone cross the road or a blood donation. On Goanet, people make an issue when none exists. When that does not work, they get personally abusive as a camouflage to their super-ego. In the current high-tech and Internet world, there are some that show off by 'eating' others - parasites whose mindset is I am smarter. Human Touch is taking part in India’s largest fundraising event – India Giving Challenge 2010 in which “Joy of Giving Week” is also celebrated I wish to share with you about “Human Touch” , a NGO which I founded in 2009 to serve young people. I wish to mention that this is purely an effort of young people to contribute to the society with the participation of young people. We invite you to strengthen our hands and help us to touch more and more human lives through our work. · Do you know that 50% of the new HIV infection is in the age group of 15-24? Human Touch is trying to protect our young people through information and education. Can you help us to reach out to more and more young people? · Do you know that as a result of HIV epidemic, there are grandmothers taking care of grand orphans who are either living or affected by HIV? It’s a real burden for these ‘grandmas’ to care for them at this age. Can you help 30 such households identified by Human Touch? · With the epidemic in young people, one will find a large number of young widows in the age group of 20-28 years, coping with HIV infection, loss of spouse and HIV positive children? Can you help around 30 such widows who really deserve to be aided? · You will agree with me that education in IT sector is really very important to make a career. Human Touch wishes to impart IT education to 20 young people from underprivileged background. Could you consider support this? Rene, it will only take a minute to donate……but it will touch a life. Every donation helps, and no donation is too small. You can show your support for us for as little as Rs. 100/-. If you’re ready to donate now, please click on this link: http://www.giveindia.org/give/pledgepage/humantouch. The India Giving Challenge is a competition to see which NGO can raise the most funds. What’s the prize if we win? Our NGO will receive additional matching funds and the impact of our effort will be multiplied. You will be taken to the GiveIndia site where we have set up an iGive page to accept donations. The site is secure and you can make a donation using credit card, cheque or direct debit from your bank account (for customers of certain banks). [Goanet] Portugal to revoke treaty of 1975
--- http://www.GOANET.org --- Goanet mourns the passing of Cornel da Costa in London, England - Sep 10/10 --- Dear Mr Ignatius Fernandes I agree with you that Portugal has no legitimate hold over Goa, and that lost control with the invasion of Goa. However, to claim that and I quote : Portugal sold us lock, stock, and barrel to India without consulting us, made me laugh ! Do you really think Portugal had any negotiating power at all in 1961? Besides, let us not forget that Salazar the dictator was in power at the time, and he did not want to negotiate with anyone and insisted Goa was a province of Portugal, and just lost the war. There were even less chances of negotiating anything, after years of Goa having been taken by force overnight by the mighty forces of the Indian army, air and navy. And how about India also consulting us goans about what we wanted and how we wanted to be governed? Did they ask for our opinion when they marched in and took over Goa by force? Was the opinion of the handfull of freedom fighters really representative of the majority of people in Goa at the time? After all, Goa existed as a territory or colony of Portugal, before India existed as a Nation Never mind all that now, it is too late and it is history. The fact is we Goans missed our chance to make Goa our own and take full control of our destiny. As time goes by, we seem to have less and less control of our homeland and it is time to look at ourselves in the mirror and ask : what have we done to stop being sold out, and stop the ongoing invasion of Goa? after all , now it is not just our brothers and sisters from India that continue to invade our space, but Russians, Israelis and only God knows who else! However, I think there are positive things we can still do. Instead of dwelling in the past, we need to zoom in to 2010 take a reality check and look ahead into the future, while we joggle for space in our own homeland to stand up straight with our chins up, and search for our lost voices in the cacophony of India. Good luck with the search of our goan voices! And when we find them, lets sing in harmony! Carmen Miranda From which realms of fantasy did Bernado Colaco dream of this headline I thought it was an April's fool joke but it's September. Even if it did revoke this 1975 treaty with India what would Portugal achieve and would India meekly give back Goa to Portugal. Anyway Portugal has no legitimate hold over Goa any more, it lost control after the invasion of Goa in 1961. If Portugal had done any favours for Goa they should have stipulated in their treaty that the Goans would have a referendum whereby they would ask the indigenous people how they should be governed and also they should be autonomous state under the aegis of India. Something like the U.K.'s Isle of Man who have their own parliament or even like the Channel Islands. But Portugal sold us lock, stock, and barrel to India without consulting us. I personally would prefer India to govern us but with one diffirence we should dictate how we should be ruled with say Bernado's Goa Suraj Party in control at least Florian would be quiet. and contented Regards Ignatius Fernandes..

[Goanet] Fwd: Davorlim (Navelim) residents brace up to oppose land acquisition
--- http://www.GOANET.org --- Goanet mourns the passing of Cornel da Costa in London, England - Sep 10/10 --- http://www.oheraldo.in/news/Local%20News/Davorlim-residents-brace-up-to-oppose-land-acquisition/40818.html Davorlim residents brace up to oppose land acquisition HERALD REPORTER MARGAO, SEPT 11 With the government determined to acquire land admeasuring 1.15 lakh sq mts at Davorlim for the proposed multi-purpose utility project, Davorlim villagers are bracing up for an agitation to protect what they called as the land of their ancestors from acquisition. Government’s order to the South Goa district Collector earlier this week to acquire the land in question has stirred resentment and protests amongst the villagers. With their sustained objections to the project falling on deaf ears, the villagers now plan to take to the streets and hold protests outside the district Collectorate building. The villagers also plan to convene a special gram Sabha meeting and plan to call on the local MLA and PWD Minister, Churchill Alemao to address their genuine demand. Says a villager Antoneta, who has been in the forefront in the opposition to the project: “The villagers are fighting to protect the land from acquisition for their children. This is the only open land available in the village. Where will our children and grandchildren go if this land is acquired for government projects not benefiting the villagers”. Antonetta along her fellow villagers are contending that the Communidade land was preserved and protected by their ancestors for the generations to come. “If the government acquires the piece of land for the multi-utility projects, the villagers will have no where to go”, she asserted. Davorlim villagers along with the Gram Sabha and Panchayat body had been opposing the project since the government notified Section 4 of the Land Acquisition Act to acquire the land last year. Their pleas, however, went unheeded as evident by the fact that the government in June last notified Section 6 of the Act. That the government is firm in its resolve to acquire the land in question became crystal clear earlier this week when the district Collector was given orders under section 7 of the Land Acquisition Act to acquire the land. The Davorlim panchayat has rallied behind the villagers in their demand to scrap the land acquisition process. Deputy sarpanch sandeep Kambli said that enough is enough and that the people are now ready to come onto the streets. “Till date, neither the government nor the district Collector have bothered to take the locals into confidence. They have not been explained what multi-utility project is all about and the projects that would come up on the acquired land”, Kambli said. Like many a villager, the deputy sarpanch said the local MLA should support the local villagers in their battle against the land acquisition proceedings. “The villagers will also call the Chief Minister Digambar Kamat as well to scrap the project”, he added. Agitated villagers say the government had initially initiated moves to acquire lush green fields for the proposed Kabrastan and has now set its sight on the barren Communidade land for ulterior motives. [Goanet] Lion Roars- Wining and Dining Faleiro-style
--- http://www.GOANET.org --- Goanet mourns the passing of Cornel da Costa in London, England - Sep 10/10 --- The chosen ones Last week you read how Rs 3,31,47,262 was spent on the shenanigans of the NRI Commissioner Eduardo Faleiro. When I said partying at conventions, I was serious, very serious. Here’s how some of that money was spent. A symposium on NRIs and family values held at the Goa International Centre, Dona Paula in Panjim on July 22, 2006 cost Rs 2,89,418. A huge sum of Rs 39,31,470 was spent on the Global Goans Convention 2007 held at the Cidade de Goa (yes, the chosen one) on January 3-5, 2007. Rs 7,23,421 was blown up on the 7th Know India programme for Diaspora youth on September 2-15, 2007. No venue was specified in the RTI data. A conference on Indian expats in the Gulf held at Hotel Mandovi, Panjim on March 29, 2008 cost Rs 1,98,308. A sum of Rs 3,88,740 was spent on a conference on building bridges with Africa on July 12, 2008 at the Cidade de Goa. The 1st Know Goa programme for Goan diaspora youth held jointly in Goa and Delhi on November 30 and December 14 of 2008 cost you Rs 13,47,689. I can’t begin to tell you how many times these well-heeled Goan youth must have holidayed in Goa prior to this extravaganza, and now we give them a paid holiday in Goa and one to Delhi just for good measure. Then there was Faleiro’s magnum opus: a conference on migration trends and the Goa Migration Study 2008 at the Goa International Centre held on October 9, 2009. Cost: Rs 1,66,180. Also, if you recall from last Sunday, the study cost Rs 20L, and Faleiro also flew to Kerala at a cost Rs 1,39,781 for the purpose. More tears for tax-payers Next he organized a 2nd Know Goa programme in Goa and Delhi from November 30-December 14, 2008 an extravaganza that cost you Rs 14,99,877. Makes you want to pull out your hair. Finally, a conference called ‘Goans in Europe and Europeans in Goa: Cultural experiences and identity’ at Hotel Nova Goa, Panjim on December 11, 2009 that cost Rs 52,949. Yes, I know that word identity again, and all that money blown on a Lost Cause. Hollywood makes sequels, Faleiro makes re-runs of lost causes or as some would say lost cause found again. In the end, the lost cause really was the Rs 85,98,052 spent on partying at conventions. And when they were not carousing, they were flying. The joy(stick) of flying Between Faleiro, VAdm John D’Silva (retd), Chairman of the Overseas Employment Agency of Goa, and U.D Kamat, the Director for NRI Affairs, they spent Rs 4,22,781 on flying within the country in 2009-10. Faleiro did that Kerala trip that cost Rs 1,39,781 on May 10-17, 2009. He flew to Bangalore on July 1-8 – Rs 40,746, to Delhi on August 2-8 - Rs 59,247, to Delhi on October 20-24 - Rs 1,22,715 and to Bangalore again on January 25-31, 2010 - Rs 9,277. It’s been questioned here before and needs to be posed again. How on earth do Goa’s politicians pay well over Rs 1L for a single (allegedly) ticket? D’Silva flew to Delhi on July 22-25, 2009 – Rs 10,651, to Bangalore and Delhi on August 23-30 – Rs 9,118 and to Delhi on September 7-10, 2009 – Rs 23,248. Kamat flew once, to Hyderabad, on July 25-27 – Rs 7,998. If you see the humour in it, Faleiro’s flying abroad in fact could entitle him to become a non-resident Goan himself. Well, at least, a BRG (barely resident Goan). Run(away) costs In 2008-09 Rs 8,14,833 of your tax bucks was spent on them flying within the country. You could also call it run(away) costs of flying and the pun is hugely intended. Faleiro flew to Delhi on April 24-26, 2008 - Rs 38,885, to Delhi, Vishakapatnam and Hyderabad on June 22-July 6 – Rs 62,333, to Delhi on August 20-27 – Rs 46,985, to Delhi on September 20-23 – at a huge cost of Rs 99,156, to Delhi again on October 19-23 – at a massive, massive cost of Rs 1,46,557, to Delhi on October 28-November 1 – Rs 55,397, to Mumbai on November 11-17 – Rs 25,070, to Delhi on March 1-6, 2009 – again incurring a massive Rs 1,60,997. The question is why did Faleiro spend Rs 6,35,680 flying mostly between April-November of 2008 to destinations one can safely assume had little or nothing to do with his job (officially at least) at hand. Incidentally, both D’Silva and Kamat also did their bit of flying --to the same destinations. So were they shadowing Faleiro or simply duplicating his work? D’Silva flew to Delhi (2), Bangalore and Thiruvananthapuram, while Kamat flew to Delhi (5), Hyderabad and Mumbai. In 2007-08 the trio spent Rs 5,33,805, Faleiro doing the bulk of the costlier flying once again. Carmen, for that, we're supposed to have an elected government. Never mind that the system in place allows those elected as people's representatives to be wholly unrepresentative, selfish, taking care of their own interests, and caught up in communalism or corruption to flourish and rule the roost. In Kashmir, the negation of the people's will in elections (through out and out rigging) is now being pointed to as a major cause for the large-scale alienation of the ruled from the rulers, whichever party has been in power. We've had elected governments in Goa since 1963 (December). If all have spent more time and energies on playing on fissures among different segements of the population, and feathering their own nests, then why not point to the problem where it actually lies? --- http://www.GOANET.org --- Goanet mourns the passing of Cornel da Costa in London, England - Sep 10/10 --- Dear Santosh, I totally agree with you. Gilbert's comments were in very bad taste. But then Gilbert is not a fraction of the gentleman Cornel was. I had the pleasure of meeting Cornel and having lunch with him some four years back when he visited Goa. A fine person who was always keen on learning more, Cornel was most pleasant to converse with. He was also very frank and honest about his opinions and actions. In private and public communications I have often disagreed with Cornel's opinion but was always amazed at the grace with which he would respond. We in Goan cyberspace have lost a fine man whose interaction raised the bar on many discussions. I doubt Gilbert has any of Cornel's qualities. --- http://www.GOANET.org --- Goanet mourns the passing of Cornel da Costa in London, England - Sep 10/10 --- That's the spirit, Carmita. Thanks for the insight re chances of negotiating et al. However, as in driving, one occasionally needs to look in the rearview mirror to see what occurred in the past so as not to lose perspective, and zoom in to 2010 take a reality check and look ahead into the future, as you have stated. What is past is past, one cannot go back and retrace the steps in a different direction (aka wishful thinking). If one can help and assist relieve the present chaos, ah! that's a great help. In this respect, I think Floriano needs all the assistance he can get, moral and financial, in the political battlefield. - Original Message From: Carmen Miranda carmitamira...@gmail.com To: goa...@goanet.org Sent: Sun, 12 September, 2010 7:55:29 PM Subject: [Goanet] Portugal to revoke treaty of 1975 ... The fact is we Goans missed our chance to make Goa our own and take full control of our destiny. ... However, I think there are positive things we can still do. Instead of dwelling in the past, we need to zoom in to 2010 take a reality check and look ahead into the future, while we joggle for space in our own homeland to stand up straight with our chins up, and search for our lost voices in the cacophony of India.

[Goanet] Sonia, PM don't see eye to eye
--- http://www.GOANET.org --- Goanet mourns the passing of Cornel da Costa in London, England - Sep 10/10 --- Sonia, PM don't see eye to eye Author: Kumar Shakti Shekhar Publication: The Pioneer' Date: September 10, 2010. http://www.dailypioneer.com/282169/Sonia-PM-don't-see-eye-to-eye.html Divergent views on the environment versus development issue have started emanating from the highest quarters within the UPA Government and the Congress. Within days of PM Manmohan Singh maintaining that the country's environment could not be protected by perpetuating poverty, Congress chief Sonia Gandhi on Thursday took a diametrically opposite view saying environment must be protected to ensure sustainable development. Speaking at a function to dedicate Stage II of National Capital Thermal Power Project's Dadri power station, Gandhi said, We definitely need to generate more power from different sources to meet the growing demands from our farmers, our factories and our people. At the same time, we must protect the environment to ensure sustainable development. She further said, In whatever we do we must not forget that our lush forests and mountains, majestic rivers and all other water sources, and clean air have sustained and nurtured us for millennia. We have a responsibility to preserve them for the coming generations. Her remarks are in contrast to those of the PM's. We must adequately ensure that whether it is tribal rights, environmental concerns or forest concerns, they are given their appropriate place. But at the same time there has to be a balance. You cannot protect the environment of this country by perpetuating poverty, he had said. The difference of opinion between the Prime Minister and Sonia comes even as there has been a growing divide within the Government itself on this issue. Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh has already locked horns with his Civil Aviation counterpart Praful Patel over giving clearance for the construction of Mumbai's second airport at Navi Mumbai. With regard to the Congress too, the stance taken by Sonia is in line with that of Rahul Gandhi, who has made known his preference to environment over development, during his visit to Niyamgiri Hills in Lanjigarh village of Odisha last month, after the Environment Ministry's decision on Vedanta. The PM thus seems to have been marginalised by the party on the vexed issue. Then, there are issues like the Government's Maoist policy and the Home Minister's saffron terror remark, which have seen Congress leaders Digvijay Singh and Janardan Dwivedi publicly countering Home Minister P Chidambaram. Experts say after the rumblings between the senior party functionaries and senior Ministers, such divergent views by the Congress president and the PM suggest a clear disconnect between the two in the recent past.

--- http://www.GOANET.org --- Goanet mourns the passing of Cornel da Costa in London, England - Sep 10/10 --- My Condolences! Better late than Never! I am privileged to having met Cornel in person at the Goan Convention 2008 in Toronto; and also again at the Goan mega Function in London later the same year. Because of this and also having a few skirmishes with him on goanet and other goan forums,I feel particularly sad at his suddem demise. I did not know; as I was travelling within Australia, and so I did not read 'goanet' for last three days; until a common friend from London emailed me about Cornel's passing away; only then I looked up Goanet. He was a good person, always concerned at certain issues that were plaguing him. I always had the feeling he was an angry man in some ways, and unnecessarily taking on the burdens of the world's ills upon himself so seriously, that he could have made himself miserable and stressed out. May his 'soul' rest in peace! He probably never believed in a 'Soul' So I would say: RIP. As an atheist and vehemently anti Christian (Catholic) religion only; I often wondered as to what sort of 'slant' his 'Atheism' held. I sincerely hope he will find out, in his after life. My sincere condolences to his family, that survives him and may they be able to cope with their bereavement. For 'all that' he Will be missed on Goanet and other Goan Forums. Nascimento Caldeira Melbourne, Down Under. --- It is with a heavy heart and absolute shock that I inform you that Cornel passed away of a sudden heart attack today (Friday) in London in a hospital. I offered his wife Dr. Nancy our condolences from the Goan community and will inform you of funeral services later or perhaps Eddie Fernandes will do the needful. May he rest in peace. George
[Goanet] Lion Roars - Driving You Crazy
--- http://www.GOANET.org --- Goanet mourns the passing of Cornel da Costa in London, England - Sep 10/10 --- Of Mad Men and Crazy Women on the Roads Last week I asked why the traffic police ever bothered to apologise for the mayhem on the roads. For once I find myself defending them because frankly, theirs is a lost cause. We have many, many madmen and a few crazy women too on the roads. The traffic police identified 60 accident prone zones in the north and 40 in the south, narrowing down the main causes to “rash and negligent driving, over speeding, dangerous overtaking, lane cutting, drunken driving, fault of pedestrians, bad roads, mechanical defects, and stray cattle.” I find five categories missing here; the PWD, the bully government driver, the insensitive taxi driver and the trigger happy truck/utility van driver, 98 percent of whom are migrants who pop in an out of the many cheap bars at regular intervals in the course of work, and/or rich kids whose parents are walking ATMs. Ah, that brings me to Goa’s ubiquitous bars. Somehow this Goan edifice does not figure in the list. Shouldn’t it? Look at the many cars parked outside favourite watering holes on just the one highway itself. In fact rather than the row over late night drinking hours, it should have been about strict closure after 2pm. But that doesn’t happen, so at Gene bar opposite the Goa Institute of Management in Ribandar, for example, no one quits before 4pm which is when the bar shuts down for the afternoon. This is also where quite a few tourists have literally one for the road before driving off to Karnataka! Yet in 2009 ‘under the influence of drinking’ made up a miserly Rs 1,16,200 of the Rs 3,28,25,050 collected as fines by the traffic police. And I almost forgot, the most dangerous of all causes, your friendly neighbourhood MLA who gets hot lined immediately a voter is caught and makes the case go away. Cars with tinted glasses were fined Rs 7,27,700. Improper number plates produced Rs 8,57,900 and then I begin to wonder, is the traffic cop really blameless? Too Fast Too Furious That would be the best way to describe many drivers in Goa and yet two-wheel riders collectively paid Rs 75,83,900 for not wearing helmets and drivers without seat belts paid a collective Rs 20,05,700. Dangerous parking, whatever that means earned fines of Rs 18,55,600 while drivers using a mobile while driving paid Rs 8,37,100 in fines. Which you would think would actually run into several crores considering the only ones who don’t mobile-talk and drive are bus drivers simply because they are in such a tearing hurry to get from point A to B, they have no time for chatter. Though, if their vehicles were fitted with power steering, I wonder! Where am I going with this? Apart from those certified mad men on the roads, I am not too sure the traffic police are entirely or even partially blameless. Right time, right place cops Rash and negligent drivers paid a fine of Rs 36,71,050 of the total of Rs 3,28,25,050. Add Rs 16,00,100 for over speeding to that and it looks too easy for the traffic police. Look again at all the categories above. It is obvious Goa’s drivers (described here) are just easy prey because they don’t care about getting caught. All that the traffic police have to do is wait for the inevitable to happen, like football strikers, many of whom earn their keep by simply poaching which means to be at the right place, at the right time. Then it’s a matter of a simple tap in. Here’s the evidence. No entry was fined a huge, huge Rs 26,70,450 while wrong turning was fined Rs 2,41,200. More proof. The combination of drinking and driving (Rs 1,16,200), rash and negligent driving (Rs 36,71,050) and over speeding (Rs 16,00,100) toted up to Rs 53,87,350 of the total fines of Rs 3,28,25,050. Police predators The police waiting at the right place, at the right time earned them a total of Rs 29,11,650 in fines paid by foolhardy drivers (categories: wrong turn and no entry). Add that figure to fines of Rs 17,19,400 paid by drivers dumb enough to drive without side mirrors, you have a figure of Rs 46,31,050. And remember, this figure has nothing to do with tinted glasses fines (Rs 7,27,700) , improper number plates (Rs 8,57,900), no helmets (Rs 75,83,900), no seat belts (Rs 20,05,700), and dangerous parking (Rs 18,55,600), all of which add up to Rs 1,76,61,850 and does not include that totally uncaring group of drivers driving while using mobiles (Rs 8,37,100). So, it’s really about dumbos dying to get caught and not about the traffic police trying to make our roads safe. There were huge fines paid for driving without tarpaulin Rs 8,79,800, without uniform Rs 6,22,000, violating traffic signals Rs 4,09,000,

[Goanet] Farewell Cornel
--- http://www.GOANET.org --- Goanet mourns the passing of Cornel da Costa in London, England - Sep 10/10 --- A man of intelligence, integrity, independent thought, intolerant to inequality and certainly not averse to irascibility when he sensed injustice. This and obviously much more was Cornel Da Costa. In the short time that I knew him I found Cornel was a man who stuck to his guns; come hell or high water. Yet he was courteous and accepted the right of others to their opinions. He had a fine sense of fair play. I remember only recently my silly tactlessness toward another member on GX. Even though Cornel was in the throes of vitriolic crossing of swords with this gentleman he immediately jumped on my posting and sternly informed me that I was crossing the line of decency. I will miss him and wish him eternal rest and peace. And may his family and friends receive the strength and grace to bear their heavy loss. He will be a sad loss to Goem and especially the Goemcar Diaspora. Sincerely XM

[Goanet] Ganesha Chaturthi!
--- http://www.GOANET.org --- Goanet mourns the passing of Cornel da Costa in London, England - Sep 10/10 --- Dear Goanetters, Since yesterday we are hearing continual firecrackers outside the room. It is the great festival of Ganesh Chaturthi. When we were children, we used to visit our Hindu friends and neighbours. We used to see attractive fruits around the Lord Ganesh and his colourful image. We were so friendly with the Hindu boys and girls in the school! In fact, Hindus consider such a visit, even by Christians, as very auspicious, a blessing from God, a sign of friendship. A small reflection about the festival will help us all to know its meaning. Regards. Fr.Ivo GANESH CHATURTHI: *Ivo da C.Souza Ganesha Chaturthi (गणेश चतुर्थी) is the Hindu festival of Ganesha, the elephant-headed son of Shiva and Parvati. It is the “birthday” of Lord Ganesha who is widely worshiped as the god of wisdom, prosperity and good fortune. While celebrated all over India, it is most elaborate in Maharashtra, Goa, Gujarat, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh. Outside India, it is celebrated widely in Nepal and Tamil Hindus in Sri Lanka. It falls on the fourth day of the bright half of the Hindu calendar month of Bhadrapavada, starting on the shukla chaturthi (fourth day of the waxing moon period). The date usually falls between August 20 and September 15. The festival lasts for 10 days, ending on Anant Chaturdashi (fourteenth day of the waxing moon period). It is considered to be Ganapati’s “birthday”. The Ganesh festival coincides with the harvest season. By the fifth or sixth century CE., it was celebrated, in some places, in thanksgiving for the early crops, and in propitiation for the later ones. That is why in the Ganesh puja agricultural products are used, like durvas (grass), flowers, panchamrit (five cow products), laddus and neureos. The rat is depicted under his belly as his vahan (vehicle). This has reference to kal, the destructive god, whom Ganesha had conquered. Thus, the rat has been subjugated and the harvest protected. Ganesha was not only god of prosperity and auspiciousness, but also god of wisdom and knowledge. The scholar and great patriot, Lokmanya Tilak, stimulated the national spirit of the masses of India, by organizing an annual festival in honour of Ganesh, beside celebrating the Shivaji Jayanti (birthday). He popularized these festivals through the columns of his paper, Kesari. The festival is preceded by a day of fasting. And the family does not taste any food before the deity is installed and consecrated. The image is made from clay brought from the river bed or sea and is colourfully painted, or Plaster of Paris. Once the image is consecrated by the mantras of the pujari (priest), God is supposed to have come to dwell in that stature and to have visited the house, and so beautiful prayers are addressed to him. The puja may last for hours, or three days, sometimes seven or more days, according to the decision of the dha zonn of the village or in fulfillment of vows. At the end of the festival, the presence of the deity is “removed” by a special ceremony, and the image is immersed in a well, river, or sea, as the case may be, returning it to the dust from which it was made. The image may look to be strange, half-man and half-elephant, with four hands and a pot-belly. But it has social origins and symbolize divine attributes. We have to bear in mind the two distinct currents of Hinduism: popular or folk and literary or classical. Folk Hinduism denotes the sum of customs and beliefs as actually practised in the life of an ordinary Hindu. Literary or classical Hinduism indicates the more scholarly and higher values and cultural conditions. Folk Hinduism has its roots in the Indian village where the Aryan civilization initially rested and flourished. Origins of Gram Devata: Aryans were in the forests, they needed protection. Beasts became spirits, the Lion became the “King of the Animals” at the entrance of the village, so that propitiated by regular sacrifices, he would keep away from the village all those evil “spirits”. Thus, he became the “protector of the village”, Kshetra-pal or, in later Hinduism, Gram Devata. In the Deccan, one of the most popular Kshetra-pal was Gajendra (Lord Elephant), known as Ganesha or Ganapati, a name that means “the lord of the hosts of evil spirits”, symbolized by the rat at his feet. (Another such popular Kshetra-pal was Hanuman, the Monkey God). Other tribes also represented protecting divine beings by a “totem”, which was initially an image of an animal or a plant. Gradually it changed to half human and half animal, and finally to a
[Goanet] QGA - Interesting News on Commonwealth Games in India
--- http://www.GOANET.org --- Goanet mourns the passing of Cornel da Costa in London, England - Sep 10/10 --- Dear QGA members, Here is a note and links - from Goa. This year, the Commonwealth Games come to India and will open next month in New Delhi. So comes the Games greatest traditions, the Queen's baton, in having been the curtain-raiser to every game since Cardiff in 1958. The Baton is a triangular section of aluminum twisted into a helix shape and then coated with coloured soils collected from all regions of India. The Coloured soils are a first for the styling of a Queens? Baton. A jewel encrusted box has been used to house the Queen's message, which was laser-engraved onto a miniature 18 carat gold leaf-representative of the ancient Indian Patras. The Queens? baton is economically contoured for ease of use. It is 664MM high, 34MM wide at base and 86MM wide at the top and weighs 1,900 grams. The Queen's baton has a number of technological features including: * GPS: Through a Global Positioning System (GPS) viewers are able to track the actual positioning of the baton a participating country in real time. This enables the actual assessment of where the baton is. Through this information the Commonwealth management can have better assessment of any disruption on the relay of the baton. * LED lighting: This is a unique and wonderful way of exemplifying the flag of the country in which the baton is located in. LED is a set of colorful lights that changes color in accordance with the flag of the country the baton is located in. * Messaging through text: The baton is embedded with a text messaging device which enables messages to be sent to the baton for congratulating the arrival of the baton in a participating country. The Delhi 2010 Baton Relay was launched on 29th October 2009 at Buckingham Palace in London, with Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II handing the Baton to the Honorable President of India, Smt. Pratibha Devisingh Patil, who in turn passed it to Dr. M. S Gill and Mr. Suresh Kalmadi. Who passed the Baton to the first Baton bearer, Abhinav Bandar, the Olympic air rifle champion who began the Baton's journey with a relay around the Queen Victoria Monument? The Baton will travel 100 days touring the 28 states of India. It will then be taken to its final destination, the Jawaharlal Nero Stadium for the Opening Ceremony of the XIX Commonwealth Games, where Her Majesty's message will be read aloud to the athletes. [Goanet] Goans abroad: From dreams to nightmares
--- http://www.GOANET.org --- Goanet mourns the passing of Cornel da Costa in London, England - Sep 10/10 --- With dreams of making pots of money Tony Fernandes left Goa four years back to seek his fortunes abroad. He left behind two ageing parents, his wife and two children aged 10 and eight. Today his children are 14 and 12 and he hasn’t seen them since taking the train to Mumbai from where he flew to the Gulf. At present, Tony is an illegal alien in the United States. He works in the kitchen of a hotel in Detroit and the only time he ventures out is to buy a calling card for his phone. There are thousands of Goans like Tony, who live and work abroad, often illegally and more often than not they possess a Portuguese passport. For many Goans, a Portuguese passport is their ticket to freedom, or so they think till their dreams turn to dust. Since the state was governed by the Portuguese till 1961, any Goan whose parents were married in Goa before 1961 can apply for a Portuguese passport. “They think that with a Portuguese passport it will be easier for them to earn money. The only thing that it is good for is to migrate abroad. But once there, you are on your own. Most Goans are not well-educated and lack conversation skills, so once they go abroad, many are left with no option but to take low paid menial jobs at construction sites, oil rigs or in kitchens,” said Laurenco Mendonca. Mendonca’s father is past 80 and for 30 long years he had worked in Saudi Arabia. “In those days, it was not so bad. Most Catholics who were land owners were well-educated and fluent in English and Portuguese. So my father had a middle-level job in a company and made much more money than what one could have earned in Goa or in India at that time,” adds Mendonca. The current situation, however, has drastically changed. Most Goans who want to go abroad for work or to migrate are not fit for managerial posts. Joe Manuel had lived in an oil rig off the coast of America for the last seven years. Recently he could not take the life any longer and gave himself up to the nearest Indian embassy which deported him back. “There were around 15 Goans on the off shore rig and all of us were illegal aliens. The company did not mind as they paid us below-minimum wages with no leaves. It’s not that the people who go abroad to work are not aware of the conditions, there is no fraud involved by any placement agency. We all knew what we were in for, but the money was very good.” Joe has come back with roughly Rs 24 lakh that he saved after periodically sending money back home. He has bought a small flat and started a provision store with the leftover money. “At least I am settled and my children won’t grow up in poverty,” he says adding, “But after going through the ordeal, I think that being a beggar here in your own country is much, much better than earning a lakh a month abroad.” Unfortunately only veterans agree with Joe. For those Goans who have no chance of earning more than a couple of thousand bucks a month thanks to their lack of qualifications, going abroad is still a good option. Thus Nelson D’Souza left his wife and two pre-teen girls at their small Baga home last month and left for Miami. He has got a five-year job contract in a hotel kitchen and when he comes back, he knows he will have at least Rs 20 lakh saved up; enough to set him up for life. “I don’t mind him going for such a long duration. I teach in a kindergarten and my day goes looking after my daughters. If things get difficult while he is away, I can always go to my parents’ place,” says Anna, Nelson’s wife. The accounts of Goans roughing it out are endless. From Savio, who was a steak chef in a Kuwait hotel when Saddam Hussain attacked to Justin, who left for Portugal 30 years back and is one of the top lawyers in that country today. Like Justin, some stories have happy endings while others end in a lot of sweat and heartbreak, but Goans continue to apply for Portuguese passports. In 2008, 312 Goans got Portuguese passports, in 2009, 432 and this year, already 433 Goans have got their ticket to a better life, or so they think.

[Goanet] Ethnomycology of Goa’s shiti olami
--- http://www.GOANET.org --- Goanet mourns the passing of Cornel da Costa in London, England - Sep 10/10 --- Ethnomycology of Goa’s shiti olami Please view http://picasaweb.google.co.in/Nandkamat/WonderfulShitolOlamisTheEdibleTermitomycesMicrocarpusOfGoaIndia#http://picasaweb.google.co.in/Nandkamat/WonderfulShitolOlamisTheEdibleTermitomycesMicrocarpusOfGoaIndia (see previous report at http://mushroomsofgoa.blogspot.com/2009/02/exploring-goas-rich-ethnomycologygoas.html) After reading this background information Scientific name:- Termitomyces microcarpus heim or Podabrella microcarpa in sensu singer Biodiversity:- indexfungorum database lists four taxa 1. Termitomyces microcarpus (Berk. Broome) R. Heim 1941; 2. Termitomyces microcarpus (Berk. Broome) R. Heim 1942, 3. Termitomyces microcarpus f. microcarpus (Berk. Broome) R. Heim 1942, and 4. Termitomyces microcarpus f. santalensis R. Heim 1977, The above follows the classification scheme as per Roger Heim. Heim had accompanied American anthropologist R. Gordon Wasson to Santhal region to check mycoentheogens. Heim a global expert on termitophilic species then found a new taxa of T. microcarpus and named it santalensis to honour the santal tribals. As per Rolf Singer’s scheme the species is listed as 1. Podabrella microcarpa (Berk. Broome) Singer 1945, 2. Podabrella microcarpa var. major Sathe J.T. Daniel 1981; 3. Podabrella microcarpa var. microcarpa (Berk. Broome) Singer 1945 So how many species of T. microcarpus exist on earth? In my opinion 5-8 including the three novel forms which I have reported in Goa i.e. goanensis, longiradicata and epiphyticus. Local names:-shringar, shiringar, shiti, shitol, shit (for cold conditions) Etymology:- from ‘beautiful” or “cold conditions” Period of appearance:- from middle of August to January, peak in September Habit:- in groups, clusters of 2-5 or upto 200 Habitat:- on ground rich in litter, on plastered mud floors, on sandy soils exclusively from fragments of fungus combs scattered by termites as monsoon nears end Distribution in the world:- African countries south of sahara, South east asian countries below Himalayas (upto Yunan, Vietnam and Phillipines). Not reported from neotropics Edibility:-known to be edible in all countries where it is found but owing to ephemeral fruiting, fragile nature, small size increases collection efforts, need to harvest fresh and consume within 24 hours Recipes:- Goans make a spicy preparation (tonak), at least 300-1000 need to be collected for a good meal, a popular species in Ponda, Canacona, Pernem, Sattari Cultivation status:- since these mushrooms are cultivated by fungus growing termites cultivation is difficult. Nutritional importance:-Yorubas of Nigeria use these for medicinal purposes, known for antioxidant value (also view Ugandan research on Nutritional and hypocholesterolemic properties http://ajol.info/index.php/ajfand/article/view/54081) Conservation status in Goa:-Unlike other 14 locally marketed termitophilic agarics these species are not marketed owing to their fragile and non fleshy nature and very short shelf life-so there is no conservation need In Pernem they call these edible mushrooms-Shringar or shiringar olamis because they ‘beautify’ the termite hills and the ground In rest of Goa these are knows as ‘ Shiti or shitol olami” or just ‘xit olamis’ (Salcete) I found them during my research work- at Margao, near Holy spirit church on cow dung plastered floor, in Molem sanctuary ( a species closer to south African) , Poinguinim, Majorda, Santa cruz, Bambolim and at Panaji ( first epiphytic occurrence in world on Ficus benghalensis, reported on http://www.bio.net/bionet/mm/mycology/1999-September/007457.html, named as Podabrella microcarpa var. epiphyticus ). Another collection was made close to Archbishop’s palace, Altinho below Samania saman (rain tree). At Mycology lab, dept. of Botany Goa University we’re studying these species for past 12 years. A few videoclips on the species would be uploaded on YOU TUBE next week. [Goanet] September 11, Historic inter-religious event a stunning success
--- http://www.GOANET.org --- Goanet mourns the passing of Cornel da Costa in London, England - Sep 10/10 --- From the Joseph Naik Vaz Institute In splendid sunshine and in the midst of a colorful Berkeley crowd, music, and bands, our Joseph Naik Vaz Institute and Dana Yoga Peace Society supporters came together at Berkeley Civic Center Park to offer our prayers, support, sentiments for peace, and inter-religious harmony on this tragic anniversary of September 11. We were right in the spirit of Tim Padgett’s article “What Christians Can Learn from Koran Burner the Rev. Terry Jones” in TIME magazine. What is the counter to violence? His suggestion: go pray with others of different faiths, celebrate their festivals, share their holidays. Our celebration was around a picture of Ganesha for Ganesha Chaturthi, one of Blessed Joseph Naik Vaz in a Sannyasi robe, and a picture of the Dalai Lama and the Tibetan flag. First of all we took a minute to talk about our journey toward peace and non-violence, to remember victims of all faiths who perished on 9/11, and the burn and accident victims around our San Francisco Bay Area (San Bruno gas pipe explosion). Swamini Mangala of Badarikashrama helped us to do the Lighting of the Lamp ceremony while she recited Mantras for Peace and Invoked Ganesha on this auspicious Ganesha Chaturthi festival day to remove obstacles in our paths. We recited the Lord’s Prayer (Our Father) in thanksgiving for the great Christian tradition in America that leads to protect refugees like the Tibetans who attended this meeting. An Egyptian provided her family Koran and we read verses about Peace in the Koran. Then the Tibetans chanted and said a very special prayer for Peace composed by the Dalai Lama. Two beautiful paragraphs were read from our own Asha Sharma’s book about her Quaker grandfather’s spiritual journey to Hinduism while working as a missionary in Himachal Pradesh, from the chapter titled “The Vedantist.” They signified unity between religious faiths. We ended by reflecting on the beautiful inter religious events in the life of Goan Catholic saint, Blessed Vaz, who was protected by the Buddhist King of Kandy from Dutch persecution, and the compassionate intervention of the King’s Muslim physician to save him from capture and death by the Dutch in seventeenth century Sri Lanka, all while Blessed Vaz was ministering to persecuted Catholics at the risk of his life and surviving on little like a Hindu sannyasi. Incredibly, the Blessed Vaz canonization Petition to the Pope, Make Blessed Vaz A Saint, crossed 1,000 signatures at the time of the event (http://www.petitiononline.com/JosephV/). The symbolism was not lost on Blessed Vaz supporters. Joseph Naik Vaz Institute Berkeley, California www.josephnaikvaz.org
[Goanet] Talking Photos/OMVN: Ganapati Bap'pa Moriya
--- http://www.GOANET.org --- Goanet mourns the passing of Cornel da Costa in London, England - Sep 10/10 --- Bap’pa, come home soon next year (only to send back in hours?) Strange! Days of preparations for welcoming the Lord into our homes And takes only hours to reach him back (where he belongs?). I wonder, how and when exactly this immersion practice or tradition started? But I have my own theory but will wait for any other answers or theories if any. How the Lord got elephant head, I have just found out at youtube. But how He got the extra pair of hands that I don’t know yet. Today being 2nd day of Ganesh Chaturthi, many households which installed Ganapati Idol for 1.5 day (Dedd dis) have immersed their lord into the nearby pond, river or sea. At our time, local Hindus used to immerse their idol into our public drinking water Well and next day we fetched water as usual. At Panjim, there were two ferryboat services one for Panjimites and the other Betimites. Starting from around 8 pm, Ganesh idols immersion was around 45 per hour (Av.) and it goes on till early morning. People from nearby Miramar, immersed their idols into the Arabian Sea (Miramar beach, I mean) Some go for medium sized idols and some go for small or large or extra large. Yet, there are some who will go for extra small (bamonn included). Dedd dis or divas, Ganapati are mainly from Bamomn people. For Bamonn, it is strictly a family affair. With close family members only say upto 4 EK DON TIN CHAR GANAPATICHA JAYJAYKAR Idols are lined up for final pooja and ‘Chirmulyo bath’ Just before the immersion http://www.flickr.com/photos/joegoauk29/4983958879/ A young boy carrying his handmade Ganapati Card, which is also to be immersed http://www.flickr.com/photos/joegoauk29/4983955865/ This is onboard the ferryboat ‘Betim’ One last chanting of aarti http://www.flickr.com/photos/joegoauk29/4984553162/sizes/l/ Now, it’s time for immersion From the Feryy Ramp. Is it the same as Panjim Licium? (opp. Church)? Sadly, the building is abandoned by the Govt. and is in delapidated condition. Seen some using it as toilet/urinals Answer: Liceu or Lyceum was Secondary Education or middle school during Portuguese regime in Goa. In the 1950s, the official educational setup consisted of primary and secondary, which included the Liceu or Lyceum and the Technical schools. Portuguese students who passed the Segundo Grau, either joined Liceu or Escola Technica. It is similar to the Panjim Liceu, which was known as ‘Liceu Afonso de Albuquerque, Panjim’. There was one Liceu each in Panjim, Margao and Mapusa. The Mapusa Liceu was closed due to a lack of students and they were directed to join Panjim Liceu, which continued classes in Portuguese until 1967. The Carmelite nuns of St. Mary’s Convent High School took over Mapusa Liceu building in 1963, where they continued to teach until they moved to their new location in 1989 where they built new premises. Part II Administracao das Comunidadee de Bardez http://www.flickr.com/photos/joegoauk28/4966082531/sizes/l/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/joegoauk28/4966686694/sizes/l/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/joegoauk28/4966083089/sizes/l/ I guess, this one is the same as Margao Comunidate building (Lohia Maidan) Answer: There are about 224 Comunidades in Goa out of which the maximum 40 are in Bardez Taluka. The Code of Comunidade was revised in 1933 and special Administrators were appointed for the Comunidades of Bardez, Ilhas and Salcette. The Mapusa Comunidade was the headquarters of the Old Conquest of Bardez. It was quite a powerful institution, as it controlled the main occupation (agriculture) of the majority of the people in the territory. The North Goa Planning and Development Authority (NGPDA) have already approved plans for demolition of the building but the Goa Heritage Action Group (GHAG) is trying to save it as a heritage structure. The only portion of the building which is currently in use is the extreme right corner, where BSNL offices are located. Part III Narcotic Drugs Court (I never heard about it before) http://www.flickr.com/photos/joegoauk28/4966078679/sizes/l/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/joegoauk28/4966080167/sizes/l/ Also Psychotropic substances Court Mapusa, Goa Answer: During Portuguese era it was known as “Tribunal”. It housed the Court of the District Judge, which exists and functions to date. Besides the High Court, there were three courts in Goa of the Juiz de Direito, established during 1937 in the three Comarcas of Ilhas, Salcete and Bardez. Hence, Mapusa as a chief town of the Comarca of Bardez gained in stature. Extra: Cine El Capitan, was it here before or that is just the name of this building? And has nothing to do with the Cinema house? Just curious! http://www.flickr.com/photos/joegoauk28/4966079689/sizes/l/ Answer: Cine El Capitan was on the same spot; hence, named El-Capitan Center. --- http://www.GOANET.org --- Goanet mourns the passing of Cornel da Costa in London, England - Sep 10/10 --- Thanks to the late Prof. Noronha Abreu, who corrected this forum by saying that one gets Portuguese citizenship and not a passport. The mentioned document is used for travel purposes only. The BI or Bilhete de Identidade or the Identity Card represents one as being the citizen of Portugal. Unlike in some progressive countries the BI may be in the form of a ration card. BC With dreams of making pots of money Tony Fernandes left Goa four years back to seek his fortunes abroad. He left behind two ageing parents, his wife and two children aged 10 and eight. Today his children are 14 and 12 and he hasn?t seen them since taking the train to Mumbai from where he flew to the Gulf. At present, Tony is an illegal alien in the United States. He works in the kitchen of a hotel in Detroit and the only time he ventures out is to buy a calling card for his phone.
[Goanet] SAY NO TO A CASTE BASED CENSUS
--- http://www.GOANET.org --- Goanet mourns the passing of Cornel da Costa in London, England - Sep 10/10 --- The decision of Dr. Manmohan Singh’s government to hold a Caste based census is a step in the reverse direction. It is contrary to the very spirit of India’s constitution and the path of globalization that India has now embarked on. After 64 yeas of Independence the manner of identifying us on the basis of our caste should have been long buried. It does not benefit the Aam Aadmi but works only to the advantage of politicians who want to invigorate their vote banks by petty divisive politics. The cancer of caste has been corroding our social fabric. We need to get rid of this malaise with a sincere sense of commitment and determination. It’s high time the government legally bans anyone to congregate or organize themselves on the basis of Caste or their Samaj. Folks, The way I see it is that the PM, as a Sikh cannot be for counting people of caste as Sikhism has been against the caste system since Guru Nanak. The other Indian power broker, Madame Sonia, is caste-less and should also have little or no interest in a caste count. The question that arises now is, who really wanted to get the caste numbers. And more importantly, for what reason. I hope there is a box in the census form for: Don't know/Don't care. Mervyn1246Lobo
[Goanet] Gabe's gift: A Melodious US Anthem.
--- http://www.GOANET.org --- Goanet mourns the passing of Cornel da Costa in London, England - Sep 10/10 --- A small untrained militia guarding Washington in 1814 was no match for five thousand hardened Redcoats who had fought Napoleon, and the city was easily overun by the British invading force which burnt down the White House on the first day, and both Houses of Congress, the Supreme Court, Treasury and State Departments on the next. Wealthy Baltimore, enriched by Atlantic shipping was the next target, but this time it would be quite different, for the flames of Washington had 'fired and united Americans of all persuasions,' writes Prof. Marrin of New York. The British navy arrived with five special warships which included the 'Hayder Ali.' They were called 'bomb ships,' that word used for the first time to denote a heavy shell that would be launched from a short 'mortar' cannon. The invaders would first have to subdue Fort McHenry which stands at the mouth of the harbour. It housed a garrison of one thousand soldiers, and was topped by a huge fifty foot flag which is displayed today in a Washington museum. Inspite of a bombardment of an intensity the world had not known until then, the fort held out and infact the British C-in-C, Gen. Ross was killed in a ground battle. Watching it all was a lawyer, Francis Scott Key. He was on board a flag-of-truce ship, a messenger from Pres. Madison, held prisoner by the Royal Navy. On seeing the flag still flying at dawn, he knew the Americans had held out and was moved into composing a poem - Oh say can you see, by the dawn's early light - it ends the land of the free and the home of the brave. It took only weeks for the whole country to recite it, and then sing it to the tune of an English taverna song, To Anna in Heaven. The US now knows it as The Star Spangled Banner, the nation's anthem, but Merwyn alone knows that it was composed by our Gabe, no less !! Let us keep the secret from Mag. Gouveia. On an even more personal note, I ferry India guests to Baltimore very often, always picking up a meal in the harbour, and visiting an old soccer-field hero, Peter D'Souza, in the nearby navy citadel town of Annapolis.
