[Goanet] Now, a fresh tender to remove Princess

2010-10-18 Thread Goanet News Service

Now, a fresh tender to remove Princess

HERALD REPORTER
PANJIM, OCT 18

Yet another tender was floated today to remove the ill-fated River
Princess, which has made the Sinquerim beach its home for last 10 years.

The new tender was floated after Salgaocar Mining Industries Private
Limited (SMIPL) and the River Princess Hatao Manch (RPHM), who had
offered to remove the ship free of cost, backed out expressing inability
to give a bank guarantee of Rs 10 crore.

This forced the government to float new tenders and invite fresh bids.
Director of Tourism Swapnil Naik when contacted said that the government
has made certain points clear in the fresh tender.

“Basically we have made some clauses clear,” Naik told Herald.
He said that the tender is now clear about the performance guarantee of
Rs 10 crore, which was only Rs 1 crore earlier.

Naik also stated that the government has also made its stand clear on
the no cure, no pay.

“The clause of no cure no pay also existed in the last tender but that
created confusion as we now understand that there are many meanings to
the term,” he said.

“This time we have clearly mentioned that we won’t pay anything till the
ship is removed,” Naik said.

According to the tender advertisement, the last date for submitting the
bids is November 1.

TAG to Remember late Rosario Rodrigues

Tiatr Academy of Goa will organize a special function to observe the
Birth Anniversary of the most popular Khell-tiatrist of Goa late Rosario
Rodrigues on Sunday, 24th October 2010 at 10:00 am at Pai Tiatrist JAF
Auditorium, Ravindra Bhavan, Margao. On this occasion Anil-Olga’s
Popular Khell-Tiatr “Xim Mer Asonk Zai” will be staged.

Photo:

http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/0St7ullqs5u9GfBf6DAQvg?feat=directlink

Late Rosario Rodrigues was born on 24th October 1948 and hails from
Benaulim in Salcete tuluka of Goa. He was a brilliant student during his
childhood days but showed keen interest in dramas. Benaulim was famous
for khell-tiatrists, literate as well as illiterate. Rosario would write
down the scripts for those who could not write. Gradually he started
writing his own scripts and lending it to others. In 1969 he formed his
own troupe and wrote his first khell “MENAKXI”.

During those days there used to be competitions of khell-tiatrs. Two
different directors would stage their khells for a competition and
results were normally declared after show of hands. In 1971 Rosario
brought a change and staged two khells on the stage. This was called a
Khell-Tiatr as the khell was performed on the stage. He came up with
khell-tiatrs of his own plays namely “AMI FATOR” and “EKUCH RATI”. Other
directors also followed this pattern.

Each khell in the khell-tiatr was of one and half hour duration. “12
Vorsani” and “Patang”, “Patkin” and “Tem”, “Chedde Cheddvam” and
“Ekleanuch Poila”, “Hindustani Cheddvam” and “Frank Sinatra” etc were
some of his famous khell-tiatrs of one and half hour duration each. In
1976 Rosario Rodrigues started a new innovation on the khell-tiatr
stage. Instead of two plays he staged a full length drama of 3 hours
“FATTIM PAULO”. It was a big success. Other directors also followed this
pattern.

There was a time when tiatrs were witnessed by high class and the
literate people while khell-tiatrs by the masses. Rosario Rodrigues
changed this too. He was instrumental in bringing khell-tiatrs on par
with tiatrs so much so that the popularity of khell-tiatrs surpassed
that of tiatrs. Rosario had many innovations to his credit in different
fields of khell-tiatr.

He wrote and directed more than 75 dramas. He was responsible to take
khell-tiatrs to each and every nook and corner of Goa and other parts of
the country. He traveled to Mumbai, Pune, border areas of Karnataka,
Maharashtra to stage his khell-tiatrs. He also staged performances in
the Gulf.

This great personality of the khell-tiatr stage expired at a tender age
of 58 years on 5th August 2003.

In order to keep the memories of late Rosario Rodrigues alive to the
modern generation, TAG celebrates his birth day on 24th instant. Tiatr
lovers and well wishers of late Rosario Rodrigues are requested to
attend the celebrations along with family members and friends.

*The farmhouse at Porvorim which runs Goa*
**

*We cannot elect donkeys and expect stallions says Dr Joe D’Souza*

Charles Darwin in his essays on Evolution had asserted: In the process of
evolution, the fittest survive and propagate. Thus, the natural process of
selection and elimination involves a process of adaptation and mutation to
counter the forces of extinction which are directed towards inhibition and
elimination.

I do not wish to delve into details on the finer aspects of evolutionary
biology, but only wish to make a point that virulence, toxicity and
aggressiveness are not the only ways by which the stronger species overcome
and overpower their prey.

They can also achieve it by remaining passive, dormant or using the
aggressive behaviour of the opponent to subdue or counter, which is also a
very important trait employed in the battle of wits for survival. While the
snake can be venomous and kill an aggressive tiger, a clever mongoose which
is a far too small a creature, is able to kill the deadly snake.

I would like to reflect on these three years of Digambar Kamat’s rule as
the Chief Minister of Goa using the evolutionary approach to the Goan
political scenario.

A pessimist sees the glass half-empty; while the optimist considers the
same glass as half-full. The glass of Digambar Kamat’s reign is 70 per cent
full and now only 30 per cent of his five year term still remains to be
completed. The three turbulent years of Digambar’s rule were threatening to
overturn his cup of governance at least on two major occasions.

The farmhouse our elected representatives inhabit at the Goa Assembly
complex has seen how 5-star hotels, the mining lobby and the drug mafia
prosper and grow. Goa Assembly complex is devoid of those who exhibit the
traits of the stately tigers, and the graceful lions. There are however a
few who are faithful dogs, cats and horses, reared both by the major
political parties and the Chief Minister himself. These have helped him
survive and overcome the political turbulence during the last three and half
years.

The common man of Goa is forced to accept all that happens at the
farmhouse at Porvorim. There are those who are harsh and declare that
Digambar is a chief minister whose rule is lacklustre and unproductive. The
state of Goa, his detractors claim, is full of chaos, crime and corruption.

There are those others, who are generous and objectively state that the
three years of Digambar’s rule were filled with concrete actions and
decisions. Be it the stalling of the Regional Plan 2011, abolishment of the
SEZs brought in by the Rane government, or the recently established Flying
Squads, to bring down the growth of mega building projects, rampant hill
cuttings and the destruction of our ecology. But, are they effectively
functional? This is not easy to address.

Looking objectively under the ecosystem prevailing around the Goa Assembly
complex, Digambar in my viewpoint assumes the role of the ‘humble mongoose’,
taking cover under duress of the pestilence and the virulence, which is all
around.

The Aam admi in Goa is not expecting much from Digambar Kamat, who is
surrounded by the poisonous reptiles in Goa governance, who have paralyzed
our society with crime, corruption and draining our public exchequer.
Needless to say, if Digambar uses his ‘mongoose instinct’ to strike the
poisonous snakes or against the political scorpions dominating the seat of
power in Goa Assembly, the rodents in the farmhouse and the bulls in the
Assembly complex, would gang up to ensure Digambar is eased out of his
chair, causing even more havoc in Goa.

In the animal farm Digambar does not pose as a lion or a power hungry
tiger, for he knows that he would soon be the victim of a bite or sting from
lethal colleagues sucking the blood of the common man. Through sins of
omission, commission and manipulation, Digambar survives.

Goans know full well about contractors giving commission for
infrastructure projects and that illegal gratification is the order of the
day in all ministries and government departments. Licenses are granted for a
price whether it is mega projects, destruction of forest land, excise scams,
illegal mining, power pilferage, health scams.

It is not about live and let live. It is about eating or cheating together
as along as one does not cut off the hand that feeds you. For Goans,
corruption is the way of life today. The big brother from Delhi often
brokers stability for Goa through suitcase diplomacy, using the carrot and
stick system to ensure discipline at the animal farm at the Assembly
complex. The Aam admi is left watching the circus and paying for the shows
with high taxes.

As you sow, so shall you reap; as you give, so shall you receive. You
cannot expect donkeys to perform like stallions. We have elected those who
live by corruption and expect Digambar to deliver mangoes on blades of
grass. Come on Goans, be practical a

given at MIT by Paul A. Spiers, whose credentials are below. Here is UPI
Investigative Report 1987 on Aspartame which was “Buried since 1987!”

This report also cites who Paul A. Spiers
is, the visiting scientist whose report at MIT Santosh quotes. It gives full
details how ‘Searle’ and scientists manipulated research studies and wining and
dining scientific critics. It will open up a whole can of worms of what
scientists are, and how manipulations are done, worse than Goan politics.

http://www.dorway.com/upipart1.html

As for me, my goal of cautioning Goanetters
has been achieved. Goa netters now are aware :

1-That there is no smoke without fire, that there is certainly
something wrong with Aspartame.

2-That Aspartame is a derivative of genetically modified E.Coli and
not chemically synthesised as stated by Santosh.

3-That Aspartame is composed of three chemicals and not two as per
Santosh’s knowledge.

4-That Aspartame is not a necessity in our lives, but if someone wants
to risk his health or that of his children, it is each one’s choice.

We clinical doctors can only give advice.
Whether to heed it or not, is up to each one. We advise as we know we are
dealing with human life and not experimenting on animals. We can in no way try
experiments on humans, which Santosh does not understand. I do not feel there
is a necessity for any more explanations.

[Goanet] Goanet] SELF DEFENCE CATHOLIC ASSOCIATIONS.

2010-10-18 Thread manuel tavares
Hi Jorge,

I whole heartedly agree with you. If the church in Goa is only interested in
helping Poor others in preference to Poor Goans, then why should we support
them? The proverb God helps those who help themselves should apply. All the
money we contribute to the church should henceforth be diverted into an account
managed by a committee of Poor Goans from which should emanate funds to help
poor Goans with hospital fees, medicines, food for the poor, shelters schools
and other worthy causes. We will then see how these Priests who care more for
non Catholics will survive. This should change their attitude and rope them
into caring for their flock first as they see their primary source of income
cut off.

If they threaten to Excommunicate us en mass, tell them to go ahead and do so.
What good is a church without a congregation?

This is the only we will be able to change their attitude.

2010-10-18 Thread Charudatt Prabhudesai

Dear Venantius,
My bad!
You were right, the raga was not Darbari but Malhar.
In both - Malhar as well as Darbari - there is that distinct accent on komal
gandhar
( heard on the word 'aayi' in the line lapaka zhapaka kara aayi badariya); the
similarities in 'andolan'
on komal gandhar with that peculiar 'minDh' from dh to komal ga, and the ga ma
re sa descent
must have stumped me while listening and working at the same time.
But while humming it to myself I heard both the nishadhs (pure and half) which
is the mark of (Miyan ki) Malhar.
Darbari takes dh ni re sa, which is the distinction of the entire kanada group
of ragas.
Regarding the revealed affinities twixt the two of us, I return the compliment!
Rajan is a great chap as I knew him in Peoples High for a couple of years
(1976-78)
He has a vast library of Hindustani music which he obviously adores.

Re: [Goanet] Science for sale

2010-10-18 Thread Santosh Helekar
As promised in my last post in this thread, I provide below a brief review of
the Boutron et al JAMA paper for the lay public. In doing so, I will answer the
questions that needed to be answered in the first place. These answers should
make it clear to those who have followed this thread why the article by Mark
Hyman on Huffington Post was a misrepresentation of many aspects of that paper.
I have already given you examples of the misrepresentations in the following
prior post in this thread:

http://lists.goanet.org/pipermail/goanet-goanet.org/2010-October/200051.html

The title of the paper that I am referring to below is: "Reporting and
Interpretation of Randomized Controlled Trials With Statistically
Nonsignificant Results for Primary Outcomes". It was published in the Journal
of American Medical Association by Isabelle Boutron, Susan Dutton, Philippe
Ravaud and Douglas G. Altman on May 26, 2010.

1. What was the paper about?

The paper was an attempt to examine the validity of the prior tacit
understanding that subjective bias enters into the reporting of negative
results of drug treatment trials. This understanding was supported to some
extent by earlier studies of others.

2. What did the authors do?

They selected 72 out of 616 papers dealing with what are known as randomized
controlled trials (RCTs) published in December 2006. Only 72 papers were
selected because these contained non-significant or negative primary results,
which was what the authors were focusing on. Two researchers independently read
these 72 papers, and subjectively assessed whether the authors had spun the
interpretation of the negative results. Reading the description of the methods
it is clear that the following excerpts from Mark Hyman's article were
misrepresentations:

"analyzed in detail 72 of those they considered to be of the highest
quality."
..Mark Hyman

"The authors of this report did not just read the abstracts and conclusions of
the studies they reviewed, but independently analyzed the raw data."
..Mark Hyman

3. What did the authors find?

They found that what they defined as spin in the interpretation of negative
results was present in as many as 42 of these papers in one of their sections,
and more than 40% of them in at least 2 sections in the main text. One
caveat/limitation of their findings, which they mention is that the two
researchers did not always agree on the presence of spin in the different
sections. Accordingly, they state that their reproducibility was moderate.
Reading these findings it is clear that the following statement of Mark Hyman
is highly misleading:

"They found that 40 percent of the articles misrepresented the data in the
abstract or in the main text of the study. Furthermore they uncovered that in
cases where studies had negative outcomes--in other words, the treatment
studied DID NOT work--the scientists authoring the studies created a "spin" on
the data that showed the treatments DID work."
.Mark Hyman

4. What did the authors infer from their findings?

They inferred that in reporting of negative or non-significant treatment
outcomes the authors of many studies with such negative results consciously or
subconsciously introduce distortion or spin to make the most of those outcomes.
They also made the following observation:

"Our results are consistent with those of other related studies showing a
positive relation between financial ties and favorable conclusions stated in
trial reports."
Boutron et al.

However, when they were challenged to substantiate the above statement with
actual data by two other authors of a subsequent comment on their paper, they
had to retract the statement. Here is what they wrote in their retraction:

"The statement in our "Comment" section that was noted by Allison and Cope was
too strong. Because of small numbers and missing data, we cannot draw any clear
conclusion on the relation between funding source and the presence of spin."
.Boutron et al.

5. What are the limitations of their approach, findings and conclusions?

In addition to the above retraction, and the already mentioned caveat, the
authors themselves stated the following limitations of their paper:

i) That their assessment is subjective, and there may be disagreements between
different researchers/authors on their conclusions.

ii) That they cannot say whether the spin was deliberate or because of lack of
knowledge or both.

iii) That they cannot tell whether the spin had any effect on readers and peer
reviewers.

Reading this and the above there should be no doubt that the following
statement of Mark Hyman is a gross misrepresentation:

QUOTE
In plain language, 40 percent of the studies we count on to make medical
decisions are authored by scientists who act as "spin doctors" distorting
medical research to suit personal needs or corporate economic interests. "Spin"
can be defined as specific reporting that could dis

[Goanet] Brand Goa Basics

Ref :
http://www.oheraldo.in/news/Local%20News/lsquo-Goa-Brand-rsquo-needs-rejuvenation-says-Branding-Consultant/42008.html

This is with reference to the recent deliberations in the Goan Media on
"Brand Goa" at the ongoing International Travel Mart (ITM) Goa. I must say
that "Brand Goa" already had its Main/Basic Strengths for a long time; its
clean environment, un-contaminated water/land/air, general cleanliness of
the state, peaceful living, low rate of crime, manageable demographics,
greenery and most importantly; its very own People having general distinct
macro personality/flavor and way of life (who are now being reduced to a
minority in their own state). However one can see today all of the latter
is being diminished, by corrupt politicians and people who elect them; so
preserving/addressing these basics will certainly help in the promotion of
Brand Goa. There is no rocket science involved here but simply some basic
common sense on why Goa is losing out!!

[Goanet] UGC 35th tournamnet week 3

2010-10-18 Thread Joseph Gonsalves
Rising Stars Vs United Friends Club

UFC begins tournament with 3-0 win over Rising Stars

The first match began at 7:10 am where the winners of the last year’s
edition United Friends club took on Rising Stars. Rising stars took
advantage of early possession and began attacking right away from the word
go, but the UFC defense was solid. UFC tried a couple of long balls to shake
Rising Stars defense but they were not able to get them through for their
attack to take advantage. The game was evenly balanced with both sides
maintaining equal amount of possession and no side looked like it was going
to give away any goals. UFC were gifted a golden opportunity in the
18thminute with a handball inside the penalty area and Remedio
Fernandes picked
the left side and send the goal keeper the other way to make the score 1-0.
UFC soon afterwards had another chance, but Antony of Rising stars pulled in
a great last minute calculated tackle to deny UFC from scoring. UFC
maintained their attacking momentum and were rewarded with a defensive
mistake from Rising Stars which resulted in an own goal.

The second half began with rising stars stepping up their attacks and were
looking for their opening goal. They began passing the ball nicely among
themselves and creating chances but the UFC defenders were present all the
way to stop all attacks. The game began to open up with both teams missing
fine chances on either sides of the goal. It was a delight to see attacking
football from both the sides, but UFC were the better team on this day and
were rewarded a the third goal from Joquiam. The match finished UFC 3 –
Rising Stars 0. The match was officiated by Jerry D’mello, Tony, Arnold and
Joe.

Final Score: UFC 3 – Rising Stars 0

UG Strikers Vs K.G.A

K.G.A knock out hosts UG Strikers

At the start of the second match, the KIFF president introduced all the club
presidents and both the teams to Mr.Ali Melhem, the official from MOH
ground. The last time these two teams met where on this ground where UG
Strikers had edged KGA 3-1 in the KIFF league match. With the new season
underway and players changing teams ever so regularly, KGA would be looking
to turn things around. The first goal came in ten minutes when an unmarked
Vitorino Menezes scored from a nice shot taken from inside the box. UG tried
to counter with some long balls from the midfield but KGA defense stood like
a rock. UG Strikers had a chance with a free kick but it was sent just wide
over the post. KGA maintained their attack on UG but UG goalkeeper had come
out of his line to make some good saves. Shubert of UG had a long range
effort from 30 yards out but it was kept out by the fingertips of the KGA
goalkeeper. Vico, played a major role in midfield for KGA as he constantly
provided some good balls for his attack keeping the UG defenders busy at the
back. Vitorino who played exceptionally well beat his marker and another
defender to make the score 2-0 at the end of the first half.

United Goans started the second half positively and some good passing leaded
to some good attacking chances. It was a very dormant second half from both
the sides with KGA happy to protect their lead. Vitorino was without doubt
the man of the match as he continued displaying his superb individual
skills. He had a chance to complete his hat-rick because of a deliberate
handball by a UG defender which resulted in him being sent off. This is the
second time we have seen a red card in this tournament due to the same
reason. There were a lot of offside calls as both teams began to play the
offside trap well. Another lapse in defending resulted in an own goal and
KGA made sure they would be no late comeback before the match ended with
favor to KGA. This match was refereed by Jerry, Joe, Arnold and Nasi.

Final Score: KGA 3 – UG Strikers 0

DHL VS RANGERS

DHL score in extra time to go through against new comers Rangers

The third match began at 10:03 am with both teams playing delighting
football and gave the crowd a great show of football. The match referees
were Gaspor, Arnold, Joe and Rosario. Both teams were matched equally and no
team had control of possession for long periods of time. The game was played
at a fast pace and the first good chance was a shot taken by no.19 Vazeel of
Rangers from 35 yards out. He had the keeper beaten but the ball flew inches
over the post. Kevin Misquita played an instrumental part in midfield as he
had helped create a lot of attacking chances for Rangers. DHL then began to
get in the game and take advantage of some shots on target. The Rangers
keeper was upto mark and was able to deal with shots on target from DHL. DHL
had some good chances but the defense of Rangers made sure they would not be
any goals in the first half.

With the temperature over 40 degree Celsius, the second half began at 10:50
am. Rangers were awarded a free kick, but it was sent to the wall and on the
counter DHL managed to score a goal but it was rightly ruled offside.

Re: [Goanet] Dasain Greetings to Venantius

2010-10-18 Thread Venantius J Pinto
Hi all,
Here is some information on the the song from my pal Vaishali. Besides Darbari
Kanada; Basant, Adana Malhar, Mian ki Malhar, and other ragas presumably are
in the game. This is the kind of stuff I am happy to hear and learn.

vjp

Venny,
Here's the best explanation I could find about the confusion. Source:
chandrakantha.com

   - Film - Boot Polish
   - Year -
1954
   - Rag - Megh Malhar
   - Tal -
Tintal
   - Music Director(s) - Shankar / Jaikishan
   - Singer(s) - Manna Dey

Comments - There has been considerable confusion about this song and what
rag to ascribe it to. According to Manna Day's recollection of this
recording, this song is based upon Malhar. Although his own published
recollections should settle the matter, they don't. The first problem is
that Manna Dey simply
referred to it as "Malhar", and ignores the fact that Malhar is not a single
rag, but a class of related rags (e.g. Megh Malhar, Mian ki Malhar). One
should be able to listen to the piece and tell which Malhar it is.
Unfortunately this too is a problem, because the Shankar / Jaikishan team
just did not quite get it right. Due either to ignorance, carelessness, or
rebelliousness, they twisted the rag and threw in so much unrelated stuff
that it became unrecognisable. This has caused various people to ascribe
this song to Basant, Darbari Kanada, Adana Malhar, Mian ki Malhar, and a
host of other rag(a)s. I do not claim to have the final answer, but the
theme of the song suggests that the composers intent was Megh Malhar.
Therefore, that is the way we are classifying this song here. However do
not use this song as a guide to understanding the nature of Megh Malhar.

Hope this helps.

NO ATHEISTS IN [CHILEAN] MINES

The miraculous rescue of all 33 Chilean miners after over 2 months is difficult
to understand from a purely secular perspective. In this day and age of
militant atheism, coupled with relentless assaults on Christianity, it is
refreshing to read about the central role that their faith played in helping

Hindutva versus Hinduism
(Indian Express, 31 October 2003, Chandigarh)
SARAL JHINGRAN

Hinduism is the most difficult religion to define as it does not have a Book, a
prophet or a common creed. Consequently, both its supporters and critics can
take up any one of its various aspects and present a conception of it that is
nowhere near the reality. This is exactly what is being done by the
protagonists of Hindutva.

First, let us take up the conception of Rama. They project Rama as the sole
Deity of Hinduism, a symbol not only of Hinduism, but of nationalism. This is a
fantastic assertion. Rama cannot be a symbol of nationalism, because religious
faith and nationalism belong to two entirely different conceptual frameworks.
Nationalism is a modern conception and is territorial and political in its
connotation. Religious faith is a matter of heart, or soul if you wish, and is
not related to territory or political sovereignty. More importantly, Rama could
not be a symbol of Hinduism even, as the latter has so many gods, and Rama is
but one of them, and that too a later entrant in the Hindu pantheon. If at all
the votaries of Hindutva want to establish the historicity of Rama, they must
depend on Valmiki’s Ramayana; and there is no suggestion of Rama’s divinity
therein. It is in Tulsidas’s Ramacharita Manas that Rama is declared divine.
But this was written approximately one and a half millennia after Valmiki’s
Ramayana and cannot be cited to prove Rama’s historicity.

Second, granting that Rama is probably a historical figure in view of the depth
of feelings for his story; also granting that Rama was born in Ayodhya, it is
hard to believe that the exact spot of Rama’s birth can be pinpointed with
accuracy. The declaration that the spot at which Rama was born is determined by
faith is stretching the meaning of faith. Here it should be remembered that the
greatest difference between Hinduism and the Semitic religions is that, unlike
the latter, Hinduism has no historical beginning. If tomorrow, it could be
proved that there was no historical Jesus Christ, Christianity would be
destroyed. But if it were to proved that Krishna was not a historical person,
it would not diminish the Gita’s authenticity. The same holds true for Rama.
Hinduism is Sanatan dharma, marked by its content, attitudes and values, and
not by its historicity.

Thirdly, the Hindutva people have destroyed the conception of Rama which the
Hindus have worshipped through the ages. Rama is maryada purushottam, the
embodiment of all Aryan virtues. An extreme dedication to duty, respect for
elders, affection for juniors, compassion for all and peace (shanti)
characterise him. He hardly ever gets angry and is unwilling to attack anybody
unless absolutely necessary. His idols have traditionally portrayed Rama in
shanta or abhaya mudra — with the right hand raised in a gesture of blessing
and a beatific smile on his face. Also, traditionally, Rama, like Krishna, is
never worshipped alone but always with his consort. The Rama of Hindutva stands
alone, with bow held aloft, ready for aggression. Both innovations go against
the traditional conception of Rama.

Fourthly, there is hardly anything common between traditional Hinduism and
Hindutva. Traditional Hinduism worships many gods, and declares that all Gods
are but different names of one Supreme Divine Reality. But the ideology of
Hindutva seems to declare that there is but one God called Rama, who is the
symbol of both Hindusim and Indian nationalism. The core of traditional
Hinduism is religious toleration and even ahimsa which, though borrowed from
heterodox sects, has been so internalised by Hinduism that it can be safely
assumed as belonging to the core of Hinduism. In contrast, Hindutva’s central
message is aggression and destruction of enemies, real or imagined.

Fifthly, Hindutva has distorted the meaning of religious symbols. The project
of distributing trishuls is an example. That Shiva has been portrayed holding a
trishul does not mean that every Hindu should carry one. Vishnu is portrayed as
carrying four things in his hands—shanka, chakra, gada, padma, Rama carries a
bow and arrow, and Kali is supposed wear a garland of skulls. Does it mean that
a Hindu should carry these things?

The Hindutva people have randomly picked varied elements from all these
traditions to project Hinduism as an aggressive religion, without learning
about the intrinsic characters of their Gods. Rama is God of righteousness,
compassion; Krishna of Vrindavan is a God of love; Krishna teaches one to do
one’s duty selflessly; and Shiva is declared Hole nath, a simple-hearted God
who is easily appeased. None of this holds value for the Hindutva lot.

Hindutva is an attempt at semitising Hindusim. The uniqueness of Hinduism lay
in its extreme liberalness, toleration and vision of one Divine Reality
residing in all. By trying to project Hinduism as a

Dasro - the Goan way
Published on: October 16, 2010 - 23:23

By Rohit R Phalgaonkar

Today will be the culmination of the nine-night Hindu festival of
Navraatri. In other parts of India it is called as Dussehra, whereas in
Goa it is called as ‘Dasro’. The term ‘Dasro’ refers to the tenth day in
Konkani. Perhaps it has originated form the Konkani word ‘Dasar’ which
refers to the 10 day rituals in temples by the pujaaris who take turn in
serving the deity.

Dasro is an occasion where different divinities are seen in their best
attire. It is believed that all the deities and divine power step on the
Earth on this day. The celebration of Dasro in Goa varies from taluka to
taluka and temple to temple. The celebration also depends on the history
of the temple in the case of the deities which were shifted to the New
Conquests.

On this day the deity of the temple steps out of the temple precincts.
The deities go beyond their temple limits to meet the deities outside
the boundaries of the temple. This is called as ‘Simmolaghan’ which
means crossing the boundaries.

Normally a devotee goes to the temple to seek blessings from the deity.
But on the Dasra day the deities of the temple set out to meet the devotees.

The Shantadurga of Kavlem goes to each and every household seated in a
Paalkhi. Similar is the case with Shri Kamakshi, the goddess of Shiroda.
She crosses the boundaries of the temple and meets the deity Shri
Shivnaath; the local deity of the village.

Thus it is an occasion on which the divinities meet and embrace each other.

‘Simmolaghan’ is followed by exchanging the leaves of the Aapto tree,
which represents gold. In local terms it is called as ‘Sone Lootap’.
This leaf is taken home by the devotees and is preserved in the shrine
of the house for one year.

In some villages of Kankona, Sanguem and Kepem and Bicholim the deities
are represented by the ‘Tarangaas’. These icons are carried on the
shoulder and are taken outside.

In some villages of Sattari, Kankona Kepem Sanguem etc the procession of
Taranga or the Satri (icons representing the deities) is taken out. In
the village of Paingini of the Kankona taluka the Tarangaas and the
Satri representing the goddess Shri Navdurga are taken to the temple
courtyard and are twisted and turned on the heart throbbing beats of the
dhol and the taashaa. Then the procession moves to the temple of Shri
Betaall where the ritual of ‘Sone lootap’ is

carried out. In the temple of Shri Vimleshwar at Rivan in the Sangeum
taluka a Tarang of the deity stands on its own without any support after
the invocation of all the deities of the village. This happens on the
eve of the Dasro festival.

On the Dasro evening at Veling in the Ponda taluka the three Paalhkis of
deities viz. Shri Lakshmi Narsinh, Shri Vetaaleshwar and Shri
Shantadurga Shankvaaleshwari are taken out from their respective
temples. These richly decorated Paalkhis with images of the deities
inside are taken near a Aapto tree.

The three Paalhkis are swayed in the air and are touched to each other
on the beats of heart throbbing traditional drums. This is followed by
the exchange of the Apto leaf. The first leaf is offered to each deity.
After this event, the Makhar is celebrated in the temples of Shri
Lakshmi Narsinh and Shri Shantadurga Shankhvaaleshwari. These are
perhaps the only two temples in Goa which have the Makhars celebrated on
the night of the Dasro.

[Goanet] A miracle in a Chilean mine

2010-10-18 Thread Marshall Mendonza
Here is an extraordinary story of 33 Chileans trapped in the mines for 69
days before being rescued. It is truly an awe inspiring story and of faith
in God triumphing over physical ordeal. Read on.

Regards,

Marshall

The dramatic rescue of the 33 Chilean miners trapped underground longer than
anyone else in recorded history has captivated the world. For 69 days, they
somehow kept themselves alive nearly half a mile underground in 86-degree
heat and high humidity, using a combination of exercise, emergency rations
and prayer.

Now they're emerging into the sunlight as the embodiment of the human spirit
- with book and movie deals to follow.

And those book and movie deals are following. The biggest threat the miners
face isn't physical. The rescued have been in remarkably good condition, and
they received medical attention while they were trapped in the mine.

The real concern is their psychological health. The men were low-paid
workers in a mine known for its danger and its safety violations. Now they
have become international celebrities who will be offered enormous sums of
money for their stories - while they struggle with what surely will be a
difficult readjustment to the outside world.

Still, we have no doubt that the government of
Chile,
which spared no expense for the remarkable rescue, will make sure the miners
have all the counseling they need. And as for the money - well, they deserve
all that they can get. Perhaps it will be enough that they can retire from
mining.

And retire they should. The incident also has pointed out how pitiful mining
safety standards can be, especially for small operators. The Chilean miners
wouldn't have been stuck for 69 days if the owners of the mine had followed
legally mandated safety procedures.

The United States , too, has
work to do. Earlier this year, an explosion in West
Virginiaresulted in the
deaths of 29 miners.

It's important to celebrate the incredible story of the Chilean miners. But
it would have been better had they not been trapped in the first place.

GBA police eyeball to eyeball as Digu does vanishing trick -Target Goa

 2010-10-14

Chief Minister Digambar Kamat did the vanishing trick that he seems to be
getting better and better at. He had been scheduled to inaugurate the
ITM-Goa, but did the bunk. The police were out in full force with lathis at
Azad Maidan, rope and lathis at the Church Square and rope, lathis and guns
at the Chief Minister's official residence at Altinho. The GBA presented a
memorandum to be forwarded to the CM, saying that ths would be the last
memorandum given to him. He was given 15 days to notify the Regional Plan
2010, or else be prepared for an agitation.

A couple of hundred people showed up at the Goa Bachao Abhiyan protest rally
at Azad Maidan. This was surprising because we had heard that earlier in the
day mobile messages had gone out telling people that the GBA rally “had been
cancelled”. SDPO Devkumar Banaulikar had earlier informed the Convener of
GBA Sabina Martins, that there was no point in marching up to the official
residence of the Chief Minister since he was not in Goa, but in New Delhi.
She told him it did not matter, the march would take place and a memorandum
would be handed over to the Secretary at the official residence.

The clouds hovered over Panjim as speaker after speaker at Azad Maidan,
exhorted the gathered crowd to be alert, to be aware, to be careful who they
vote for. The status quo of the Regional Plan 2010 was explained, which
meant essentially that it was in limbo. That the Chief Minister had given
his word that the RP21 would be notified in September. Finally the Convener
Martins asked the crowd to start marching towards the CM’s residence.

The police outnumbered the protesters maybe four to one. Feisty Claude
Alvares who is the grand old man of civil protest in Goa, a thorn in the
side of many governments, took the lead, closely shadowed by TARGET GOA.
SDPO Panaji, Dev Banaulikar stately in khaki, walked into Claude, literally.
Paper couldn’t pass through. He held Claude’s thin arm and Claude looked him
straight in the eye, even though Banaulikar was a few inches taller.

Banaulikar pleaded with him not to go on the march. Why, asked Claude.
Because Section 144 is in force, said Banaulikar. That’s nonsense, said
Claude, I am just walking on the road as are all these people, we are going
for a walk up Altinho and I want to go and have some tea. The rest of the
activists crowded around bellowing some loud slogans. Banaulikar said okay
you can walk up to the Church Square, but after that you will be stopped.
How can you stop us, was the question. If you continue up the road to
Altinho then you will be stopped. If you continue, you will be courting
arrest. In one voice all the protesters yelled fine we’ll court arrest. No
one backed down.

We walked with Banaulikar keeping pace with Claude Alvares, still trying to
get him to change his mind. Understand my position he kept repeating in a
quiet voice. Claude breezily told him not to worry, there was no need to
since we were all just going for a nice walk up Altinho. Once we reached the
church square, Goa’s finest, a four or five deep battalion of khaki clad
cops with lathis at the ready holding a thick nylon rope across the
crossroads. Several Black Marias (police buses for loading arrested persons)
were lined up. We reached eyeball to eyeball position with the television
cameras prudently at a distance incase lathis and protesters began flying
around. Claude looked around and yelled to the television cameras to come
forward and start shooting. See how they are preventing us from going up the
hill, he hollered. There were others who spoke of police being pawns of the
Chief Minister and his cronies. Atala was also mentioned. Immediately the
cops stood at attention and tried to look resolute but not brutish. The
power of the Press is considerable, but the power of the television news
channels is phenomenal.

Banaulikar again pleaded. Then he began bargaining. He would let a group of
10 protesters go up to the CM’s official residence. Claude asked for 20,
someone else asked for 40, TARGET GOA asked for 50. Banaulikar said okay 15.
Claude said they are letting 15 go, Banaulikar thought he yelled 50 and
said, no one-five, one-five, fiften. 15 ducked under the rope, and we
walked up the road, realising that many more could have come from the
different roads leading to Altinho.

The Chief Minister should really think of shifting the Official Residence
out of Altinho Panaji. There are so many roads leading to and from the
House. People could have come via Corte D’Oiteiro, via the High Court, via
the road at the back of the Mahalaxmi temple and via the Portuguese
consulate, via Sunaparant, from Sta Inez. All roads do lead to the CM’s
residence. Any one can come to and leave from anywhere. Security wise, it

remix
of Konkani, Tamil and English words mostly played for weddings/parties...and

Very interesting. Didn't realise he was Goan. Always wondered about
the possibility, but the Tamil-sounding aiy-yai-yoh did put me off!
I'm sure there are many others whom we don't even know might be Goan.

PS: Talking about Sri Lanka (this song is from the SLBC), I doubt many
of us in Goa have even heard of this man from Assagao ...

In a Democracy, the motto should be"I may not agree with what you say,but I
will die for your right to say it". Then there are know alls, who denigrate and
insult at things they do not agree with.Others ascribe motives etc.I salute
Aires Rodrigues and the GBA for what they are doing in the interest of Goa and
justice as they see it. And if others could help, where they consider right is
being addressed, the goan crab mentality will die and let us achieve stemming
the rot better and faster. Many drops an ocean make, and if the drops are
separate and fight with each other, where is the power of unity in diversity?
