Re: [Goanet] Migration for better quality of life.

2010-11-19 Thread floriano

Dear Dear Camillo,

I understand you point of view absolutely and completely. I am not talking
from a position of Ambanis and Tatas either.

What I am saying is: If we Goans are so much interested about the GOAN
IDENTITY than it is unworthy of us leaving GOA like 'lemmings' and talking
about preserving GOAN IDENTITY. For every Goan that leaves its shores to
settle outside, there are twenty who come in to fill the vacuum and stay put
here never to leave. And the worst part is that they stay in our houses and
own our properties.

I am talking from the point of view that if all we Goans come together on
just one AGENDA, that is to change the POLITICAL SCENE here in Goa so that
Goa's affairs are decided here in Goa and not in New Delhi, then things will
be so good in Goa for Goans that all other Goans who have settled (not too
well) abroad and elsewhere in India may want to come back home to live and
enjoy their lives as Goans with Goa being the envy of everyone else.

I have spent my last 15 years finding a recepe that will WORK and I have
gone grey, in every sense of the word trying to put it on the fying pan to
serve Goans to their satisfaction. But unfortunately, I have not been able
to light the fires needed. But I still do nurse HOPES that GOANs will turn
around to accept that DELHI HIGH COMMANDS are destroying Goa by the HOUR.

Please do not nurse ill-feelings on my calling Goans elsewere being third
class citizens.
I have been around the world in my days of sailing. And I have never
contemplated in settling anywhere but in Goa. The reason is: NO ONE, Repeat
NO ONE can call me 'BLACK' and tell me to go home to where I belong.
Because I am at HOME in Goa and want to make it so good, that there will be
no place in the world for GOANS to say, this foreign country is my HOME
without some misgivings.

MindsetRecently, I saw a BBC documentary on migration touched upon the
sizeableGoan Community in Swindon, UK.The Documentary showed some UK
Goans, making a difficult living via jobslike carpentry, cleaning,
plumbing etc The Irony is that in Goa today, thesevery tasks can earn
significant income and it?s very difficult to get suchlabour in Goa today.
Goans are OK to do such jobs outside for a comparablelesser net savings
vs. a good earning opportunity in Goa!!

Comments : Camilo
If there was no corruption, pollution, good and affodable education,
medical facilities, well paid jobs, decent affordable housing etc. one
would never have thought of migrating even if an opportunity arose. It is
only thanks to the Portuguese that we got the right to come to migrate
to Europe. Ashwin says that in Goa many tasks can earn significant
income and Goans are ok to do such jobs outside for a comprarable lesser
net savings v/s. a good earning opportunity in Goa. I dont understand
how he can compare earnings here with earnings back home. What about the
quality of life i.e. pollution, overcrowding, lack of affordable medical
facilities, favouritism in getting choice jobs etc. If all is rosy in
Goa/India then why should people take up jobs overseas in the Gulf, where
there is so much discrimination, on ships etc. One has also to look at the
future and long term prospects of our family/children. Could we afford
the best education in India with fierce competi
tion and such exorbitant fees.In India if we were like the Tatas,
Ambanis, Birlas etc. maybe then there would never have been any reason to
migrate. We are sure the children/future generations would be happy and
grateful for the decision of migrating.Lastly I am not advocating
migration but am giving my personal views to the ones given above. With

Indian Ambassador hosted reception to Goan leaders

The Ambassador of India H.E. Ajai Malhotra hosted representatives of the
Goan community in Kuwait to interact with former Chief Minister of Goa
and Member of the Congress Working Committee, Hon’ble Luizinho Faleiro,
Goa Chief Secretary Mr. S.K. Srivastava, besides prominent Goans from a
dozen countries, including India. Also present at the meeting were
eminent authors, poets, educationists, and other Konkani speakers from
Goa who were visiting Kuwait for the 5th Global Goans Convention held in
Kuwait from November 16-17, 2010. Addressing the gathering, Ambassador
Malhotra noted that Kuwait is a home away from home for nearly 50,000
Goans. They are a vibrant part of the Indian community in Kuwait, which
is acknowledged as being sincere, hard-working, talented, and
disciplined. He complimented Goans in Kuwait for nurturing their
culture, including through music, dance, tiatr, and football, while
extending humanitarian support to the needy. Hon’ble Faleiro and Chief
Secretary Srivastava thanked the Ambassador for support and assistance
to the community. Hon’ble Faleiro also gifted his autobiography, “My
Goa”, to the Ambassador, while the Chief Secretary presented books on
Goa for the Embassy Library.

Dear Oscar,

It was wonderful to have two of our 'Goan' Councillors (other being

Bruno Gome's presentation on Panchayat Raj and the Swiss comune system

Dear Oscar C Lobo,

Quote from William Arthur Ward:
“The mediocre teacher tells, the good teacher explains, the superior
teacher demonstrates, the great teacher inspires”.

These words really mean a lot to me as a Goan and being a Goan living in
my lovely state, outside my state and country. There is a common saying
in Goa “patrao, tujee wodwick and patrad tujhea lagin dhowor” and it is
true for people to accept the fact and lower their high ended nose for
their eye can only see what they see and not see themselves.

Sorry to say these words. I read your high ended speech and it did not
even make the smallest change or the difference to what the political
situation or people in Goa are currently doing. It is just like the same
dessert with a different topping. The taste does not change but only the
looks of how it is served.

An action speaks mightier than words and this is what I believe. If I
read correctly 40 years of your life you are living out from Goa which
you are trying to bring together not knowing the actual situation way
back home. There is a saying “one only knows the value of sweet taste
only on tasting something which is bitter”. To really know the situation
and the growth of Goa, you need to live in Goa and be a Goan, understand
the different cultures, hardships, challenges etc etc.

Ghodhe ke pitche basuri bajayanghe tho faida khai? Die for your own self
and surrender everything in the name of God and you will find success.
Mother Theresa said “I live where my heart lives with the Lord” and this
is where she found success and the Lord is with her and the mission to
his glory.

God bless you Mr. Oscar Lobo and pray that we reason ourselves not from
the mind but from the heart where you will find peace and life. Romans 8:6

Hat zodhun magtha – makha bogos jorui thor mojhe utran khodsan assa
zalair. I am just a positive Goan critic because I love my Goa and will
do everything for my Goa. I am gifted by God to write for Goa.

With love and prayers to Goa and to all Goans

Goa Federation of Mines Affected People (GOAMAP) takes
strong objections to the manipulation of mining generated employment indulged
in by Minister Churchill Alemao. Mr. Alemao stated that mining industry
generates employment for 5 lakh people in an interview published in 2010 issue
of UAE Goan Review.

GOAMAP considers this as the gross manipulation of
statistics and demands Churchill Alemao to make the names of 5 lakh people
employed by mining industry public. GOAMAP also wants to know from Mr. Alemao
the break up of as to how many people of the 5 lakh are employed on contract
basis and those on permanent basis.

GOAMAP is of the considered opinion that Mr. Alemao
has been inflating the employment figures only protect his family businesses
including his Minister brother Joaquim Alemao involved in mining that is
rapidly destroying Goa.

GOAMAP however congratulates Mr. Alemao for admitting
in the same interview that in case mining in Goa is stopped government will
fall. This is very true considering that fact that it is the mining companies
that are involved in running the Goa government. So from this it becomes clear
that Mr. Alemao is totally insensitive to the gross ecological destruction of
Goa including the western ghats and wants mining to carry on so that government
does not fall. GOAMAP urges Mr.Alemao to wake up from his slumber and stopped
being advocate of mining industry.

Dorothy/Esilda and Sonia/Bushan also received good applause. A trio sang
by young children Violet, Josepha and Vhorty so also their quartet with
Maria Cardozo were well appreciated by the audience.

Besides songs, two hilarious skits were presented by the female
artistes. The first skit was acted by Clara, Joana, Aplonia, Valencia
and Fatima while the second skit featured Anjela, Rudolfin, Chitra and
Sonia Fernandes. Both skits were well appreciated by the huge audience.

Antonette Mendes, the popular tiatr artiste and singer of yester years
was the Chief Guest. In her speech, she thanked TAG for inviting her to
the function and expressed her gratitude to the people of Goa
particularly the lovers of tiatr for giving her full support in her
journey to success on the tiatr stage.

TAG presented photographs of Regina Fernandes and Joao Agostinho
Fernandes ‘The Father of Tiatr’ to the family members through the hands
of Antonette Mendes.

Earlier Shri.Tomazinho Cardozo, the President of TAG welcomed and later
Shri. Roseferns, Vice-President of TAG proposed a vote of thanks. Sharon
Mazarello and Irene Cardozo compered the function.

Good Morning Santosh,
It seems U have woken up after two weeks, with a 'confusion headache'.
I thought Scientists and neuron surgeons would be able to prevent/ cure such
happenings by themselves before submitting other people to undeserved misery
from your name calling and mixing up, on topics.
I know it is 'typical of you', but did not realise this malaise is so badly
deep rooted in you!

Get well soon please! We miss your SANE? advise on goanet! At least that is
what you seem to think! Saiba Bogus!

 Admin Noronha,
Here are clarifications to your confusion:

Nascimento:
Why are U calling Frederick as Admin Noronha? H? Has he called you as
'neurotic' Silly' Santosh or something like that? NO!
I would want an apology from you on this name calling, unconditionally, and now.

Santosh:
The 16th, 17th and 18th centuries are three of the five
centuries that we were under Portuguese rule. I would like
to know if there were any human rights violations in these
cherry picked centuries. The names of people that I have
cherry picked are recognised as individuals who participated
in the Goan freedom movement, some of whom suffered
imprisonment or loss of life as a consequence of their
 participation.

Nascimento's response:
There have been human rights violations not only in those cherry picked
centuries. but before that too and continuing. I am sure U would love to know
such human rights violations not only from colonial powers but also from
local/national/ indigenous govt.s and authorities. Would you not?

The Hindu Widows who are led to commit Sati, for one has been going on for
centuries, and Santosh did not even shed a crocodile tear for these poor Hindu
widows! Ha Hah!
Then there are the casteless Hindus, the harijans , and dalits etc. who have
been denied 'HUMAN RIGHTS and trampled upon by the Caste Hindus and Casteists,
who thrive on the humiliation of these unfortunate people.

Is it not true that U are a part of this high Caste Society!
Shame on you, Santosh! These people were not even given ANIMAL RIGHTS leave
alone human rights!

Santosh:
I would like to have answers to my questions, and in the
process reduce my level of ignorance and that of other
Goanetters such as you, Bernado, Nascimento and Ferdinando.

Nascimento:
Hope U now realise how Ignorant U are on and about Human Rights. Your 'level'
of ignorance is so selective and deliberate, that it is at the level of the
gutters! I say so!
And U have the gall to take my name and Barnado's and Dr Ferdinand to your
level of ignoramus!

I had made no comment on Human rights; but only ventured to comment on FAKE FFs
as undeserving on the topic Goan War Veterans'. U brought my name into this
topic of human rights; that is why this is my response to you.
I now want an Unconditional Apology to me, to Bernado, to FN and to Ferdinand
from you, Santosh for trying to drag me (and us) down to your gutter level.

This statement is illogical. Mentioning Nascimento's name has no bearing on
whether I am ignorant or not. The reason I referred to him is because of his
ignorant prejudicial statement below in one of his latest Goanet posts:

QUOTE
The so called Freedom Fighters are just all Fake, at least most of them. It is
the Indian Armed Forces that liberated? (annexed) Goa, if at all; not the
flimsy FFs!!

I knew of some of these guys whose main grouse used to be against the Bhatkars

alright! They are now 'given'/ handed out the 'cloak' of FF cover; like a

In my post I had only denied what Dr. Oscar had quoted.
QOUTE:” It is an indisputable fact that for over 400 years, Goans were
subjugated to the worst human right abuses and tortures under the Portuguese
rule.” UNQUOTE.
Does Santosh feel this statement is true?

I don't know for sure whether those in power in the 16th, 17th and 18th
centuries murdered, dismembered, tortured, raped, and incarcerated people, and
destroyed their temples, mosques and/or other property. I don't know for sure
whether they forcibly converted native Goans and imposed restrictions on their
lifestyle on pain of death, torture and/or imprisonment. I also don't know
which of these things, if any, people like Agente Monteiro did before 1961. I
don't know what sort of due process existed before 1961. That is why I asked
these questions.

Since you deny what Oscar stated, could you please answer my questions, and
tell me where you obtained your knowledge of 500 years of Portuguese history in
Goa?

Santosh would do well if he corrects his English. I have not dragged Saddam
into the discussion. There is a vast difference between starting a
discussion and continuing one. I started it mentioning Saddam’s human
rights violation in comparison to Dr. Oscar’s claim.

This statement is illogical and boorishly absurd. If you mentioned Saddam's
human rights violations then you obviously dragged Saddam Hussein into this
discussion. What kind of crazy English makes you believe otherwise?

Here is the quote showing how you dragged Saddam Hussein into the discussion:

QUOTE
What Portuguese did in Goa was only maintaining STRICT discipline and quelling
anti-Portuguese movement. Saddam Hussein did the same (may be worse), but for
the sake of Iraq. The country prospered. What is its
fate now? Are the citizens safe and having better human rights with Saddam’s
elimination?
UNQUOTE
..Ferdinando dos Reis Falcão

Please see:

There Santosh goes again dragging Mr. Nascimento. Why has he not mentioned
about jc’s post which reproduced available data?

I did not mention Jose's post because I have no basis to dispute the specific
facts stated by him. I have already stated why I mentioned Nascimento in
connection with Goan freedom fighters.

Does Santosh feel these characters were different in their activities than
the Naxalites, Maoists or Terrorists? Or does he think that the data is
 false and fabricated?

Some of the activities mentioned, if true, indicate to me that these characters
were lawbreakers and violent extremists. They were different from the
Naxalities, Maoists and terrorists because the activities stated indicate that,
unlike the latter, the former characters did not murder, dismember, torture and
rape anybody. They did not terrorize the population of Goa. I have no reason or
basis to believe that the facts stated by Jose are false and fabricated.

Cheers,

Santosh

Happy Feast to you  All
Venerable Agnelo D'Souza (Fr. Agnelo)

We left 11.30am for a short tour to Rachol Seminary,
Church, cemetery, Pilar and Anjuna, back home at 7pm
with two hour lunch break at a Rachol Restaurant.

All these pics are taken today between the above hours.
Sadly, we could not get inside  the house at Anjuna as we
were told the inmates of the house had gone out
(Fr. Agnelo  brother's (grand?)daughter- in-law and
her son). Hope I got it right.

Died at Rachol Seminary on 20th November, 1927

[Goanet] Certificate of Goa's ruin by National Geographic

2010-11-19 Thread Rajan P. Parrikar
To Goanet -

So now the National Geographic has included Goa in the top 10 worst
destinations, with the remark that its environment and local culture have
been overpowered. Breaking news, that!

I guess for Goans my detailed photo documentation of the ruin wasn't
enough. But a line written by a white guy sitting 5000 miles away
will be lapped up as gospel.

This raises another question - will Admin Noronha now blame the
National Geographic photographers' telephoto lens? After all, according
to Admin Noronha, all is fine in Goa, and we have been exaggerating
things for our selfish ends.

Or was the National Geographic panelist who issued this judgement secretly
funded by Manohar Parrikar? I wonder.

NEW DELHI: The government looks set to forcefully rebut in the Supreme Court
the charge that Prime Minister Manmohan Singh kept mum on Subramanian
Swamy's petition seeking prosecution of former telecom minister A Raja.

The petition, to be filed by a responsible officer, in keeping with the
court's wish, will strongly argue that the PM did not sit on the petition.
Every communication sent by Swamy, be it the complaint petition or the
subsequent communications, received serious consideration of the highest
authority and the files will speak for it, sources said.

However, the affidavit will mark a shift from solicitor general Gopal
Subramaniam's arguments in that it will stress Swamy's was a petition by an
individual, based on newspaper clippings, and that the PM could not sanction
prosecution while probe was on.

It may also stress that Swamy kept on making additions to the petition. The
government, however, may find it difficult to get around the SG's statement
that every communication from Swamy had been adequately dealt with and that
every letter from Swamy had been responded to. This assertion, it turns out,
is not fully supported by facts and can turn into a chink in the
government's armour on Tuesday when the bench of Justices G S Singhvi and A
K Ganguly hears the matter.

The government will attempt to pre-empt any adverse comment from the bench
on the delayed response to Swamy - it went only on March 19, 2010 - by
producing files that show that while government might not have been prompt
in getting back to Swamy, the PMO wasted little time in acting on his
petition. The officials were more than confident that the bench would agree
that Swamy's allegation that the PM slept on his petition was baseless. The
SC was told by the SG that as the CBI had registered an FIR, DoPT had
responded to Swamy that his petition was premature.

Re: [Goanet] Slaughtering of animals - sacrifice.

2010-11-19 Thread Venantius J Pinto
One could also see it as not necessarily being intolerant. It may have to do
with the symbolism attached to it -- knowing it is halal and the referent to
Islam. In any case that is exactly what the meat sold by Muslim butchers
would be if they are applying the same criteria in Goa.

This part may have more meaning than I understand:
we are dished up with halal meat, whether we like it or not. Many Super
Marts are purveyors of the stuff. Are there no equivalent choices -- I
mean cost wise. In fact that probably is not the issue, in which case is
there a a paucity of non-halal meat? Purveyor is an interesting word in that
in the past it was someone who supplied/made provisions for the sovereign.
Guess in contemporaenity its what the Purveyors think helps expand their
markets and bleeding hearts to believe they are doing the right thing.

Halal is not just how an animal is slaughtered but that it is dedicated to
God. The opposite is haram. Meat wise its also about not consuming blood
(sorpotel), swine and includes ANYTHING not dedicated to God. Halal is also
good economics to mean suggesting that non halal is bad. What could be bad
is the nature of how the slaughtering takes place and whether the flesh of
an animal killed/dying in an agitated manner is bad for us. Now the
specialists could come in at this point and spell your thoughts and
knowledge.

Years ago, I was in Blacheath at a swank market, and bough some samosas, but
not a person of color in sight. The UK has assimilated a lot of things and
these are economic decisions perhaps aided by SAsian planners etc. For all
one knows the Archbishop of Canterbury eats/is served halal meat. In NY we
have Glatt Kosher, so Jewish people can have a Masala Dosa with Mol'logapudi
etc., within their culinary framework. The Rabbi blesses the kitchen (not
sure whether this is done daily), the ingredients etc.The owners are
friends; are Gujarati and have a South Indian restaurant called Madras
Mahal. Others restaurants now also have Glatt kosher attestation after
seeing that business could be better for them too.

If a Muslim does not know whether the meat is hahal, all that he has to do
is invoke Allah and eat it -- Bismillah to be precise. In that sense he/she
is dedicating it to God. Nothing else matters. But people will say no. no
its not correct. They can of course choose not to eat it -- although they
may say they are NOT EATING cause its not halal. This is the case with many
things including ho we see our fellow men.

But as with anything, it turns dogmatic and one may often be mislead in
thinking one is doing the right thing and an excuse to throw ones religious
puritanism around -- basically belt people around the head and shoulders. A
fine extrapolated example is us Goans -- cultural minorities who often are
more Indian than the majority. In many of our cases it is a strand worthy of
patriotism as also a path to sorting oneself out, AND yet deep down ii is
actually good for ones development -- formation in lived aesthetics if you
will.

IS LEGAL ALCOHOL A PROBLEM IN GOA?
A study conducted by Caritas Goa in the early nineties had revealed that 45% of
goan families have a problem with alcohol. Having a problem with alcohol in a
family is as worse as having alcoholics. The AA report, according to some of
us,
has been too modest to claim that there are only 1 lakh alcoholics in Goa.

For those of us who have worked in this field for several years and many others
who have actually gone through the scourge of this disease, we could
confidently
reiterate the AA concerns that legal alcohol use or abuse is a threat to the
social and political fabric of this State called Goa. Several of Goa's social
and political problems originate from the very availability and consumption of
this one substance called alcohol.

So, let us stop denying and start accepting this fact.
