The tragic and horrific road accidents that have taken place in the last one
month have occured in areas where roads are sufficiently wide. This only
goes to prove that the justification given by the politicans and cops that
the widening of the National Highways is a necessity for reducing road
accidents is all humbug.
Anyone can see that the underlying cause of road accidents in Goa is
reckless driving by the filthy rich youngsters and the consumption of
alcohol which is encouraged throughout the State at all times of the day.
Organising road safety week is a cosmetic activity meant to squander public
money. It is not surprising that when it comes to the issue of driving under
intoxication there is nothing but silence because Goa's tourism is hinged on
booze.

Carnival is traditionally celebrated before lent season in Goa and
Brazil; however, Melgoans are holding these - two in one event this
April to avoid any clash with other events that are taking place
in February and May 2011 respectively. Melgoans is not an
association and has been involved in showcasing cultural heritage to
show case our Goan culture and promote good friendship amongst
all - in our Multicultural community in Victoria. We have been
showcasing our events since last 8 years and we have received
Ministerial recognition as well as leadership award that ran something
on the following lines:

Monday saw a 45-year teacher being killed in a tragic accident at Guddemol near Balli this morning. Cuncolim police said the deceased teacher Babuso Thulo Velip, a resident of Koddem in Barcem village was proceeding on his Vespa scooter when he was knocked down by a four-wheeler. He died on the spot. The Cuncolim has registered a case of rash and negligent driving. What is Historiography? Does it mean writing about only those things of
which one is aware? It cannot be denied that Historiography involves a lot
of research, a meticulous and painstaking exercise to unearth and bring to
light facts which may not all be in the public domain. But, in recent
years, the term is being interpreted as an effort to write about only those
events and happenings one personally knows, only about persons one likes
while ignoring those one does not, and generally blow one's own trumpet. In
fact there has been an active attempt to twist history to fit one's own
agenda; this is specifically in regard to the history of Konkani language
and the Konkani Tiatr. Let us bear in mind that, in effect, what is today
being recorded as history is a falsification of History, a diabolical
attempt at suppressio veri suggestio falsi. When the next generation comes
to use this hodgepodge as reference material and bases its writing on this
history could we blame them? Have these historiographers pondered over
this aspect?
Keeping this in mind, we are bringing out a roll of persons who have
sincerely contributed to the progress of Konkani and who have been,
deliberately or otherwise, ignored or neglected. We do not rule out the
possibility of shortcomings even in this writing of ours. But we are of the
firm opinion that facts, in their proper perspective, must be truthfully
recorded. Therefore, we humbly request our knowledgeable readers to point
these defects and also provide any additional relevant information, in their
possession or knowledge, about these personalities so that proper amends
could be made. Letters/articles in this regard would be much appreciated.

F. J. Martyres - d. 1986
Francis John Martyres alias F. J. Martyres, native of Savantvaddi, held a
high position in GPO, Mumbai. His contribution to Konkani language is
immense. He has functioned as a pillar of Konkani Bhasha Mandal, Mumbai
right from its inception until his death on December 11, 1986. As its
General Secretary for many years, he has conducted all its affairs from his
own home since the Mandal did not have an office of its own. For a very
long time he was the only Catholic pillar of the Konkani movement in Mumbai.
During his tenure as Secretary, and under his direction, Mando Utsav was
organized in 1971 and Kunbi Utsav in 1973.
He was the Chairman of the Reception Committee during the 13th All India
Konkani Sammelan held in Mumbai in 1980 and worked indefatigably for its
resounding success.
Following his sad demise in 1986, the activities of KBM came to a
stand-still. The Mandal was revived in 1992 by J. B. Moraes and the late G.
M. B. Rodrigues with the assistance of Uday Bhembre; it continues to
function till today.
Martyres had researched all the Konkani publications from Mumbai and had
compiled a lot of invaluable data thereon. The same was borrowed for
reference by a Konkani literateur who later published it under his own name
without the permission of Martyres. Martyres was deeply saddened by this
incident. He had also collected a large number of Konkani books which, his
family members inform, were donated to the University of Mumbai after his
death.
Fr. Caetano Lobo, sdb
Fr. Caetano Lobo, sdb hailed from Colvale, Bardez. He was a saintly Salesian
priest who has served the Konkani language for several years. While he was
editor of the Konkani weekly 'Aitarachem Vachop' through this organ he
promoted and encouraged many youngsters to write in Konkani, who later
became celebrated Konkani writers. Besides contributing articles to Don
Bosco's Madonna, Aitarachem Vachop, V. Ixtt etc., he also wrote for the The
Goa Times weekly. His series of articles under the title Don Bosco-chi
Maim ani Saibinn appeared there for a long time and was awaited avidly by
its readers. Similarly he has brought out a booklet dedicated to the
Devotion to Our Lady.
One could rightly say that this entire Lobo family from Colvale was engaged
in the service to Konkani language and the society in general. Belarmino
Lobo, brother of Fr. Caetano, was a veteran Konkani author. He has
considerable writing in Konkani to his credit, being a contributor to V.Ixtt
and Aitarachem Vachop; similarly he has brought out a few Konkani

When contacted, Bicholim SDPO DySP Bousset D'Silva said, She was removed from the house which she had trespassed into using reasonable force. The police didn't assault or abuse the woman and all these allegations are baseless. We have not even arrested the woman but only removed her from the house she trespassed into along with her mother after we received a complaint against them. Police said the house is a disputed property and the matter is pending in court as Geeta's father, claiming to be a bachelor, had sold the house to Suman Shirodkar and her husband. Geeta, however, claims that she had not trespassed into another's property but was at her house when the incident happened. Suman Shirodkar and her husband had forged documents to illegally take custody of our house in Sharda Nagar colony at Bicholim. I was in the house with my mother on January 1, when the po-lice first came at 8 15pm. We explained the situation to them and they left, she said. Geeta said that at about 10 pm, a police officer returned with lady staff to their house and forcibly dragged her mother, who fell down unconscious. They got an ambulance and shifted my mother to the hospital. They arrested me and took me to the police station where the police brutally kicked me on the stomach. I fell unconscious unable to bear the pain and the police shifted me to GMC. I don't remember how long the police continued to kick me, she said. Determined to catch the culprits responsible for dumping waste in the open, the villagers began to investigate and checked all the shacks along the beach. Incidentally, they chanced upon some medical practitioner's prescription pads amid the garbage. On further inquiries, the villagers learnt that the doctor in question also owned a hotel in the village, and gathered that it was the waste from this eatery that found its way to Benaulim. The villagers, led by Benaulim sarpanch Carmelina Fernandes, questioned the medical practitioner and warned him against dumping waste in their village. They relented only when he assured to lift the waste and promised not to repeat the act. Significantly, the doctor was forced to come down to the site and lift the garbage dumped by him. Sure, that means disposing of useless papers and unused stuff, but it also means throwing away old grudges. The prevalence and durability of grudges proves that people don’t always remember what you said or did, but they do remember how you made them feel. Grudges are nothing more than toxic memories of how someone made us feel. But Confucius taught that “To be wronged is nothing unless we continue to remember it.” So why do so many of us choose to consciously preserve and revisit toxic feelings that detract from our happiness? Perhaps we fool ourselves into thinking we can inflict some sort of pain on the person who wronged us. In fact, holding on to a grudge is like holding onto a hot stone. I t doesn’t hurt the stone or the person who gave it to us; it only hurts the one holding the stone. Carrying a grudge is like being stung to death by one bee. And it really doesn’t matter how justified the bitter feelings are or how right we are. Holding on to a grievance turns pain into suffering. It’s traditional to start the New Year with resolutions designed to help us live healthier, happier, and more fulfilling lives. But it’s also useful to reflect on some of the things we’ve learned over the years, the things that make us not only smarter, but wiser. For instance, I’ve learned that trying to be a good person is a lifelong commitment and that it often requires me to do the right thing even when it costs more than I want to pay. I’ve learned that kindness is more important than cleverness and that carrying grudges is foolish and self-defeating. I’ve learned that my Dad was right when he told me, Where there’s a will, there’s a way, and that tenacity is more important to success than talent. He advised me that he checked and rechecked with the Bhaji-Palla department of Gova Mahavidhyalaya in Dhabli (near Sainik nagar). Mostly by people who have taken the information from other primary sources and then used their brilliant and incisive analyses (most of the time) to conclude with showing Goa in a poor light. RP and JGUK who use their own sources to show both the Good and the Bad leave me with the good is still much more that the bad - making an exception to all those people voiding of course. When I was last in Goa three years ago, I was pleasantly surprised at all the good things happening there. Wide roads and better connections between places, modern conveniences found only in more advanced cities, a dynamism with younger people that made one hopeful of the future, to name a few things. When I met FN in Panjim over a cup of coffee, I had mentioned this and he had asked me to put down my observations on Goanet, which I had done. Granted that I had been there for only for a short while, as my friend Bernado Colaco had reminded me, and what did I know of what was really happening in the place. While BC's question was a valid one, I am not an unobservant person and what I observe, I usually try to corroborate to ensure I am satisfied of it. We are woefully short of posts that tell us of what is really happening in Goa on a personal, day-to-day level. Perhaps the people who could tell us this are afraid that their little things that would amaze us because they think we would compare them with what we expatriates who form the bulk of this forum, would expect to be the norm. However much we Goans may think of Goa in our hearts, the place should really be compared to a backwater of say a backward European country or with some newly discovered tourist destination, and when you do that, Goa far outshines the competition. There are many places in Europe or North America where both the places and the people compare poorly with Goa. Now one might say they compare poorly with the looting of Goa as well, but the latter is a part we are all aware and yet cannot change - on this forum at least. I don't believe that what makes Goans good went away with 1961 nor do I believe that all the negatives that exist there on our radar will not be slowly but surely overcome. They say that if women ruled the world, it would be much better place to live. I say that Goa will become a much better place when the younger lot come into their own. Meanwhile, I notice that the Vivian D'Souzas, the Eric Pintos, the Victor Rangel Ribeiros, the Mervyn Maciels, the Jim Fernandes's and others who have lived in the west but yet have a close touch with modern day Goa, have been silent. This find could put India on top of the gold producing nations of the world in the next five years, if the Geological Survey of India and the central government follows the lead and does prospective digging. This find assumes significance because it is biologically refined and almost 98% pure gold, says Kamat. - Folks, I love this news report. When they start digging, they will, no doubt, find the gold in solid bars too. The only story I have heard that is better than this one is when, a few years ago, some good folks in Toronto claimed to have found diamond bearing rocks within a hours drive from Toronto. For good measure, they also claimed to be of Royal German stock. At the time, a friend sarcastically commented that the royal directors of the company had found the best of both worlds. They had the choice of deciding, every morning whether to commute to the company's HQ in the financial district or to spend time on operations at site, since both were of equal driving distance. Needless to say, a lot of people got conned into buying shares in the 'super find' and lost all their money. For investors, there is the art of pouring over the results from recognized labs, results that detail the composition of the analyzed cores. Nowadays, companies also present 3D and magnetic data of the exploration site on their websites. If you are able to read this good stuff, there is a lot of money to be made, and especially so on newly discovered deposits. More importantly, with a little knowledge, you will find it much easier to identify b/s. The easiest thing to remember here is: When it seems too good to be true, it usually is. Perfectionist Edgar Ribeiro
CHIEF MINISTER Digamber Kamat recently announced that the second
Gomantak Vibushan award would be given to the architect Charles Correia,
who was the vice chairman not only of the Task Force which
conceptualised Regional Plan 2021 but also headed the State Level
Committee mandated to finalise the plan. The award should actually have
gone to Edgar Ribeiro, who was the man who was principally responsible
for conceptualising the perfect baby, namely the draft Regional Plan
2021. But Edgar Ribeiro objected to the political surgeries deforming
and mangling the perfect baby he had conceived.
A principled Edgar Ribeiro resigned as advisor to the government on the
finalisation of RP 2021 because he believed that the very purpose of
conceptualising a Regional Plan would be destroyed if politicians were
able to tamper with it according to their whim and fancy. The other
members of the Task Force and the State Level Committee chose the path
of compromise perhaps in the belief that in the worst of all possible
worlds one must be content with what one can extort from the political
class. But for Edgar, there was no question of compromising on
fundamental principles.

Unless thing have drastically changed for the worse, I remember the mail in a large city like Bombay being in some cases miraculously delivered. Many examples remain etched in my mind. A letter at Christmas time was received by me addressed merely as Roland Francis, Byculla, Bombay. Anyone who knows Bombay as being a city of say 8 million in the 70s/80s, and Byculla a district of at least a million, would know the chances of such a letter being correctly delivered in any other country's similar postal jurisdiction as zero. At the very least it must have taken the postman some work to deliver it, outside of his job description. In Qatar, as in most though not all Gulf countries, the only postal addresses are PO Box numbers. You drive to the box however far and collect the letter, or use the company's PO Box and get it to your desk by the mail boy. Compare that with the Indian postman who has to go to the most doggone places to deliver, even climbing four and five story buildings without elevators, to deliver one letter. *ROTARY EARTH DAY TO BE CELEBRATED*
Rotary club of Ponda in association with Group TenPlus an authorized
e-waste collection agency for *Attero recycling PVT Ltd.* has decided to
celebrate rotary earth day in Ponda on the 8^th Jan'2011. The event
has got a very good response from companies like Sesa Goa, Crompton, UB
etc who have contributed to the event and also assured to give the
e-waste for recycling.
E-waste -- like old computer parts, toners, fax machines, mobiles, old
telephones - is a point of concern as it is toxic and non biodegradable
and has to be disposed off in a proper manner. Rotary club under the
leadership of Mr Sripad Talaulikar has decided to conduct this event
ERAZE YOUR EWASTE at the Aguair grounds, opp HDFC bank, Ponda to
collect ewaste and make people aware of the e-waste issues. The club
requests all companies in the neighbouring industrial estates and to the
general public having this electronic e-waste to give it for recycling
and avail offers on solar products and cfl lamps which will be available
at the venue. Companies like Phillips CFL , Konkan renewables, Aoc TFT's
etc will be displaying and selling the products at discounted prices .
CRT monitors can be exchanged with TFT's at the venue.
Attero Recycling Ltd. will also give certificates to the companies who
deposit e-waste which will help them in the ISO audits.
*This is to Generate awareness about the Ewaste Management and handling
Rules 2010 which come into force in a few months affecting every citizen.*

The beach has now divided itself into 2 areas; which is mainly facilitated by the sewage let out by the specific restaurants/hotels in the area, various illegalities, lack of action by relevant authorities, etc. The division is symbolic of the people of Colva, whose loyalties are divided or enslaved between two prominent South Goa Politicians, who have/had powerful positions in the Government and with whom the village is, has and is only going from bad to worse!! The sewage is symbolic of the high levels of corruption, apathy, lack of concern, selfishness, materialism, suffocating of conscience etc, amongst the villagers which is rapidly destroying this beautiful village. Yes some critics will come out with all sorts of excuses like for example” It is easy for an overseas person to talk from outside and he/she should come to Goa and act instead of just giving views”. I think that these are just excuses from specific individuals who either have vested interests or are too complacent to act. I am sure that if this particular excuse is addressed then these same individuals will come out with more excuses to make themselves feel better. The solution is simple and it is all about choice; choice about (1) Who you elect and How much money you accept to surrender you vote (2) What you say or not say to improve the village (3) Who you support/praise (4) What illegality you pursue/support or turn a blind eye too or do not challenge (5) Who you defame, let down or do not support; despite those very persons fighting desperately for Colva on the ground, for the benefit of all Colvenkars etc Arwin Mesquita, UAE -- Please post your comments on my Blog: http://goanidentity.blogspot.com/ Please also see below: 1. We have ghost writers, ghost editors, ghost publishers and ghost activists. We can hear about their concerns for Goa but cannot feel their support anywhere. Goa's Herald, known to be the newspaper of the goan Cristaos in particular, has now been hijacked by migrant ghosts. These ghosts planted by communal and corporate goan forces before the next assembly polls have got onto the job of confusing the cristao mind and taking goans for a joy ride. While goans are entertained with housie their houses are being occupied by migrant ghosts. The day will not be far when these ghost journalists will prompt the government to take action against the cristaos claiming that they are naxalites and Portuguese sympathisers. The cristaos of Salcette may have been happy to see letter after letter published against the freedom fighters and in support of the 'Sagres' ship. The larger agenda of ghost editors is to only create documentation that the goan cristaos are Portuguese sympathisers and ridicule the goan freedom fighters. We all know that it is the ghost shedding tears for Goa in the name of Raul patrao. And we are not fools to realise that Costabir patrao just pretends to sympathise with Raul patrao to confuse the goan cristao. All expenditure incurred by the Goa Law Commission that is not related to the Law Commission agenda should be recovered by the Goa Government from the Chairman and members of this Law Commission. It is a relief that the inaugural of the proposed international arbitration centre has been shelved. Very rightly the VIP’s that were scheduled to inaugurate it decided to keep away. So a scam in the making has been nipped in the bud! Instead of the Goa Government having to continuously keep a watch for the next scam that may unfold, it would be advisable that the Goa Law Commission itself be dismantled. As in other States let the Law Commission in Goa should be headed by either a retired Supreme Court or High Court judge with legal luminaries as members.
