[Goanet-News] Goanet Reader: The African in Goa: Village Goa beyond the Gãocaria (Jason Keith Fernandes, GT)
The African in Goa: Village Goa beyond the Gãocaria Jason Keith Fernandes jason.k.fernan...@gmail.com Every month the Xavier Centre in Porvorim hosts History Hour, a platform for local (national and international) scholars to discuss their works. In doing so it provides happy stimulation for a diverse audience. Last Friday the Centre played host to the release of Beyond the Beach: The Village of Arossim, Goa, in Historical Perspective. The work of Dr. Themistocles D'Silva, the book is a history of the village of Arossim from which Dr. D'Silva hails from. The work is clearly a labour of love from one of its native sons, perhaps born from the nostalgia that émigré sons feel for their motherland. Dr. D'Silva's work however also continues a longer tradition, that initiated by his father, Justino da Silva. Justino da Silva, was an archivist of village history, having laboured over the genealogical charts of the prominent families of the village. In his presentation of the work at the Xavier Centre, Dr. D'Silva pointed out that he hoped that his book did not remain an isolated work. On the contrary, he pointed out that there was a need for greater numbers of us to put into writing the histories of our villages, increasing the documentation on the rich histories of Goa beyond the beach. Such histories also go beyond the Goan histories obsessed with the sixteenth century and the Portuguese governance of the territory. Indeed, in the course of the presentation Dr. D'Silva pointed to the urgency of the task given that many of the older generation and their memories are passing away, and that private archives fall victim to the ravages of insects and weather. On this front perhaps Dr. D'Silva was being kind to the custodians of these archives. Though Goan society has produced a number of luminaries, the same intellectual drive that powered these luminaries is not necessarily passed on to the next generation. Many archives have no doubt been discarded into dust heaps and kitchen back-yard fires. What is most interesting in this book, is that Dr. D'Silva has written it by combining the various influences that have moulded him as an individual. In doing so, he brings to the fore a central problem in the manner in which we think about the Goan village, and thus Goan identity. A member of the village elite of Arossim, his book locates the village gãocaria (or Comunidade) as one of the points of departure for his narrative. This is not entirely out of place; the Comunidade was a powerful institution in our history and to speak of a village history without delving into the history of the Comunidade would produce a dull, incomplete history. However to speak of the village from the point of view of the Comunidade alone does not exhaust the history of the Goan villages, since there were (and are) a number of people who while living in the village, were not gãocars ofthe village. What would the history of the Goan village look like if we were to write a village history from their point of view? The threads that Dr. D'Silva draws out gives us a hint into this possibility. Dr. D'Silva points out in his book a fact that has by and large been left unsaid and unspoken in the public sphere about the Goan village. This fact is of the presence of African slaves within our village communities. The few voices that do mention the presence of the African are Dr. Savia Viegas, Valmiki Faleiro, and Margaret Mascarenhas in her novel Skin. While speaking of the presence of the African slave in Goa, Dr. D'Silva manages to point out to us that the Goan village was not an idyllic, happy setting for all. These slaves were ill-treated sufficiently to make them want to escape. And escape they did, into the jungles of British-India where slavery was abolished much earlier than it was in Portuguese-India. Dr. D'Silva made reference to the fact that the failure of their master's to provide a nutritious diet to the slaves forced the latter to poach for fish from the village ponds at night. He also pointed to the fact that these African slaves and their descendants lived at the edges of the villages, pointing to their social marginalization. When we speak of the African slave's presence in Goa's villages, we must recognize that their descendants married local men and women, or if they did not marry, in any case produced babies with local persons. This gives to a good amount of Goans, a history different from those of the gãocars -- who in any case could not have been a majority of the population. When speaking of the Comunidade we often create -- as did Dr. D'Silva -- for the Goan, a Hindu pre-history. If we recognize the presence of

[Goanet] The Beat Root Blues Band Live at Goa Chitra
The Beat Root Blues Band Live at Goa Chitra With surprise guest artists. The blues is a unique form of music that is getting a revival after decades all across the world. For Goans this music is a rare opportunity and history was created at the Goa Chitra amphi-theatre last December with the “Beet Root Blues Band” performing for the first time in Goa. It was a phenomenal first performance and by public demand this all blues band is all set to rock Goa once again on Saturday 15th Jan. 2011 at the Goa Chitra amphi-theatre as part of The Great Music Revival Concert series 2010-2011. This concert series is a creative initiative to raise funds and bridge the gap between the past and the present with the musical ingenuity of Goa’s own testimony to its rich unforgettable musical past, the concert is scheduled to showcase local and international talent. This band has been billed to perform alongside five time Grammy winner Buddy Guy and other blues legends like Jonny Lang, Shemekia Copeland and Matt Schofield at the Mahendra International blues festival in Mumbai scheduled for the 4th, 5th and 6th of February. The Beat Root Blues Band features Pratish Motwane on vocals/harp, Dave Kelly on guitar, Colin D'Cruz on bass and Claude Abranches on drums. And this time round there will be some surprise guest artistes who will jam with the band. Pratish has been passionate about music and the blues in particular as far back as he can remember. He balances a career in the corporate world where he is on the board of directors of several multinationals, with his music career that took off in New York City where he was based in the early nineties. He returned to India and decided to tilt the scale in favor of the blues forming The Beat Root Blues Band in 2004 and then touring the length and breadth of the country over the last six years belting out nothing but every style of the blues. Dave is a UK based, smoking hot blues guitar player who has toured the world as the wailing guitar in innumerable all blues bands. He will be recording and touring with The Beat Root Boys over the next six months. Dave plays every blues man’s favorite axe the Fender telecaster and actually makes the instrument emote onstage. He has been influenced by all the legends that blues has produced over the years and looks forward to performing alongside some of them when the band performs at the biggest ever international blues festival in Mumbai come February 2011. Colin used to be one of the original members of the band before he moved to Goa in 2008 to set up base as a music producer. He runs a state of the art recording studio from his home in Sangolda and has been recording and broadcasting local talent on Goa's 105.4 FM Rainbow. Pratish reconnected with Colin when he decided to record his own songs and along with the recording project, he decided to go on the road with the band once again. Claude is one of India's drum legends. He has been at it for close to four decades starting off as a nightclub drummer in the early seventy’s. He gigged with just about every jazz/blues artiste in Mumbai and around the country on five star hotel residencies before hitting the concert and festival circuit. He has an amazing feel for rhythm and sinks naturally onto the groove of a song even if he plays it for the first time. The concert promises to fire up the audience once again with some smoking blues right through the evening. Every track they cover shall bare a distinct stamp of each musician’s fire power. Be there to enjoy the sheer energy created onstage through some exciting interplay between four virtuosos and their guests. The event will start at 8.00 p.m. sharp on Saturday 15th Jan. 2011 and is inclusive of dinner. There would be limited entry; members and guests are requested to confirm their booking by 12th of Jan to avoid disappointment. Help other CONSUMERS to be better informed. --- Cases taken up on priority basis, says GSCW Goa State Commission for Women (GSCW) today said that certain cases need immediate priority, which is the reason why few other cases remain pending. “We go by proper procedure. It is a judiciary proceeding… but there are also cases which require urgent attention such as the incident of a woman who was allegedly beaten up by the police at Bicholim on Sunday,” GSCW chairperson Ezilda Sapeco said referring to statements on delay in inquiries. The commission received 222 cases in 2010 of which 30-odd cases reached logical conclusion. “In almost all cases, we visit the spot in person apart from counselling aggrieved parties in the commission office. We have to send notices, summons, record statements and execute other actions to solve a case…Each case has to be paid special attention and we make it a point to bring these cases to logical conclusion,” she said. The commission refrained itself from probing Nadia Torrado’s death which kept making headlines after alleged involvement of the former tourism minister Francisco Pacheco. [Goanet] Smart sanitation
I thought members would be interested in the enclosed item. Best regards, U G Barad Smart, eco-friendly sanitation for all By - S Vishwanath THE PIONEER January 12, 2011 The technology choice that China made for sanitation and wastewater management has led to not only blistering economic growth but also rapid urbanisation as it helped Beijing reduce GDP loss that poor sanitation brings The four storied apartments in Dongsheng District of Erdos Municipality in Inner Mongolia, China look like any apartment, all 825 of them. They look the same that is until you use the toilet. Detailed instructions nailed to the door tell you how to use them. The urine diverting toilets flush with sawdust instead of water. Urine is collected in tanks tucked away in the basement of the building and used as a fertiliser in a surrounding agricultural field. The solids are composted and reused also as fertiliser. Grey-water coming from the washing machine and bath is treated at a small treatment plant in the development and reused for landscape use. The people who bought the flats did so knowing fully well the systems of sanitation in place and paid the same market rates as the flats which had conventional sanitation systems. This is China's brave new world of waste and wastewater management. China, and rural China in particular, has been well-known for centuries for reusing human waste as a fertiliser. Legendary tales are told of farmers competing with each other in inviting passers-by to use toilets in their fields so that they could access the fertiliser. There was never any waste only a resource according to the Chinese farmers. This was, however, a small part of the story. Rural sanitation has been a problem for long. In 1996, only about 20 per cent of households had access to sanitation. The prevalence of open defecation, the use of the traditional pit latrines and in general bad sanitation practices, including the application of untreated human waste for agriculture, had led to the high prevalence of intestinal diseases such as worms in the rural population. A focussed attention first on rural drinking water supply improvement then followed by sanitation access improvement has resulted in about 50 per cent of the populace having access to safe sanitation by 2003. The technology choice made for sanitation was also interesting. These included five major types of sanitation systems - the triple compartment septic tank type, the double barrel urn type, the methane generation digester type, the eco-san separate urine faeces collector type and finally the conventional sewer type. While the first and the last are designed exclusively for isolating and treating sewage to safe standards only, the remaining three systems are designed not only for safe treatment but for reuse of nutrients as well as for generation of energy in the case of the methane digester type. Take the case of the urine diverting dry toilets. The UDDT'S have a pan designed that collects urine and faeces separately. In the case of washers the wash water is also collected separately. The first experiment in Guangxi Province started with the construction of 70 toilets in Dalu village in 1997. This was followed by the construction of 10,000 UDDT's in 1998 and then scaled up to the construction of 6,85,000 toilets in 2003. The construction of the UDDT's has thus been mainstreamed as one of the sanitation alternative while providing the nutrients that farmers need for their fields in a safe and hygienic manner. The factors for such a rapid and large up-scaling has been the cultural acceptance of the technology, the water scarcity in the villages also makes the UDDT attractive as it needs no water for flushing, the availability of compost and urine as fertilisers, the technological and political commitment to improve and implement such a system. The methane digester type of toilet, much like our biogas systems, has an innovative component to it. Typically, the toilet of the house is also connected to pig rearing, a poly-house and vegetable cultivation. The Chinese call it the four in one model. Pig effluent and human effluent go into the methane digester that produces biogas for cooking and for electricity for the house usually not connected to the grid. The digested effluent is used as a fertiliser inside the poly-house used for vegetable cultivation by the rural family. More than a million such units have been established and are running all across China. Till the 1970s, China meandered along with a set pattern of slow growth till Deng Xiaoping unleashed the economy. The result, decades later, is not only a blistering economic growth but also rapid urbanisation. More than 46.60 per cent of China lived in urban areas in 2009 and the tipping point of 50 per cent is expected to be reached by 2015. More than 300 million Chinese will move in to cities between 2010 and 2025. This will put a tremendous

Dear Freddy, Wishes for the New Year et al. BTW, though I usually appreciate what you utter, I would like to disagree with you when you say: It's true, gone are the days of integrity and honesty, today they are just mere tools left in some dark corner gathering dust. The reason for my disagreement is that even Jack de Sequeira was surrounded by person of lesser integrity and lesser love for GOA and Goan Identity. These same persons ditched Jack de Sequeira in favour of the marauder Bandodkar. To cite an example, J.M. D'Souza was the first one to break the Camel's back. :-) followed later by lesser mortals like Orlando Sequeira. I further say that there are a lot more persons of integrity today, in Goa, who have no courage to come forward to call a spade a spade. The reason again is that apart from the fright and fear of the erstwhile Portuguese, the fright and crippling fear of the neo colonizers who, so called, 'liberated' Goa through invasion and annexation where the Catholic Community was terrorized and persecuted, some even paraded half naked and beaten and spat-upon on the streets of Panjim, thus negating the simply swallowed theory of 'Liberation' I am one amongst them (including you) who has defied the natural law of remaining quiet or to refrain from calling a spade a spade. I have even publicly called Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, the icon of India, a LIAR w.r.t. promises made to Goa and Goans of preserving the unique Goan identity. I have called Indira Gandhi the collaborator of her lying father who took her father's lies a step forward to go ahead and sanction the most 'could be damaging' to Goa and Goans .. Opinion Poll of 1967. There are others, like Adv. Re: [Goanet] misfired price blame
This gets complicated. Remember the industrialists; Seems that Gandhi's concern was to keep businesses happy, or was it was only the Birlas?! If he was around and seeing the India of today, its is apropos to speculate that he could have had a second or third awakening -- a major one, much on the lines of people just trying to stay on track. The first being when he was pushed onto the platform at Pietermaritsburg. I hope I will not be considered a spoiler, but the following links are worth looking at and factoring within larger thoughts. Pietermaritzburg: The Beginning of Gandhi's Odyssey http://www.sscnet.ucla.edu/southasia/History/Gandhi/Pieter.html ++ Worth knowing: Gandhi - Financial History - Part I http://www.malaysia.net/lists/sangkancil/2000-12/msg00356.html (excpt 1) Gandhi gave his blessing to the abundant wealth of Birla with his teaching on trusteeship, a concept which asserted the right of the rich to accumulate and maintain wealth, as long as the wealth was used to benefit society. Gandhi apparently borrowed the concept of trusteeship from the writings of the American millionaire, Andrew Carnegie, who had used trusteeship to promote capitalism over socialism. (excpt 2) Apparently Gandhi had reasons for publicly seeming to support a party (Swaraj, vjp) which he admitted in private he was against. Similarly, Gandhi voiced radical views against capitalism and industrialism in his public speeches and writing: Industrialism is, I am afraid, going to be a curse for mankind Industrialism depends entirely on your capacity to exploit.[56] ++ Gandhi, Globalization, and Quality of Life: A Study in the Ethics of Development http://www.mkgandhi-sarvodaya.org/articles/gandhi_globalization.htm ++ He did reject the factory model of industrialization, and rather preferred that a machine be kept idle than a man/person. This I deeply believed from the time I was around 20 that this should have been the model for India, Not having NAM and then chucking it all away. It is know that Gandhi preferred that money be in the pockets of the factory owners rather than extra money in the hands of the workers. I can relate to do if one grooms a society to live a particular kind of life, where the factory owner has specific responsibilities that lead to a comprehensive understanding as well as dispersion of egalitarian values. Imagine if when TV was introduced in Doordarshan had basic civic learning to all of us, not just the poor, as in Lahan Kutumbh Suki Kutumbh! As also along the lines of;defecating (and building the necessary amenities), spitting pan, groping. Its not just the poor -- the wealthy do it too; and mass training would have made the poor see that they too can at time rebuke those to the haveli born (to the manor born).. . Also when we look at the license raj etc., it helps to note that Mrs Gandhi took advice from industrialists -- right so, but who in the first place could not imagine the idea of competition, Most of them simply could not see other ways of operating and furthering a country like India. It was a particular myopia to say the least. Having said that I happen to live in the West, and for what its worth adding -- there are many things that led to it. Personally speaking, some of us are much better out of India than dead. It not fear needless to add. venantius j pinto Message: 9 Date: Wed, 12 Jan 2011 22:44:12 +0530 From: soter so...@bsnl.in To: goa...@goanet.org Subject: Re: [Goanet] misfired price blame Eric wrote: Had Gandhi lived, there would certainly have been a new freedom movement, with a restoration of a free economy, enterprise without today's crony capitalists. That would have gone against the capitalist interests and so he was silenced by the gun. But Truth remains the Truth, no matter what the government does to conceal it. Even seasoned politician like Pranob Muhkorjee on TV was lost exclaiming whether growth was 2.7% or 3.7%? Law of averages allows only one Indian to be in the top 50 richests. China with 7% of World GDP, has0 in top 10 and 3 in top 50 world richests. China has similar demographic features as India. And all this without accounting equivalent Swiss bank riches of Indian politicos. [Goanet] Goanet Reader: The African in Goa: Village Goa beyond the Gãocaria (Jason Keith Fernandes, GT)

[Goanet] India's misplaced socio-economic development
[Letter published in GT, 14/01/2011] Whatever assuarances the government may be giving to the people, the prices of food commodities just refuse to climb down and stabilise. The climate change offers a wonderful cover up for the mess. This country has been more focussed on procuring nuclear fuel for generating electricity than on working towards food security. The government is totally engrossed with the prospects of super highways by destroying precious agriculture and forest lands instead of focussing on bringing more land under cultivation to combat the climate change impact. At the end of the day, the nuclear fuel and increased road connectivity will not afford cheaper food to the people of this country. The present crisis is a tale of a misplaced socio-economic model of development that this country has embraced after independence by rubbishing the concerns of the Father of the nation, Mahatma Gandhi. The rich and greedy do not feel the pinch but the poor of this country are paying the price. -Soter D'Souza
