So, was that a watering down of the sentiment from the time A Portuguesa was written or what? Here's a rendition of it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:A_Portuguesa.ogg Quite rousing, but one wouldn't guess the politics behind the notes at that time... QUOTE However, the song was perceived as a political weapon, and it was soon converted into a republican hymn. This political co-option of the theme's original meaning forced both authors to disavow this vision and stress its purely non-partisan sentiments.[2] On 31 January 1891, a republican-inspired rebellion broke out in the northern city of Porto and A Portuguesa was adopted by the rebels as their marching song. [Goanet] [JudeSundayReflections] 7th Sunday of the Year
13-Feb-2011 Dear Friend, We all know it is easy to be nice and kind to those who are kind to us. We are really put to the test when people are nasty and hurt us. We then feel it is right and just to retaliate, an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth. It’s the law of the jungle we follow –animals do that! But as human beings, as people of faith, we are challenged to be good, to forgive those who hurt us. It is said, only a strong person can forgive! To be responsible, is not to react but to respond as I choose towards another. Forgiveness reveals the depth of our love. Have a grateful weekend celebrating His and your forgiveness! Fr. Jude Sunday Reflections: Seventh Sunday of the Year –‘Love your enemies and forgive them’ 20-Feb-2011 Leviticus 19: 1-2, 17-18; I Corinthians 3: 16-23; Matthew 5: 38-48; The first reading from the Book of Leviticus has God instructing Moses to tell the people of Israel, “You shall be holy, for I the Lord your God am holy.” The Book also spells out what it means to be holy. It lists several things we should not do if we are to be holy, and then the essential commandment: we are to love our neighbour as ourselves. We imitate the holiness of God when we refuse to exact revenge or bear a grudge against another. A Better Way Mandela spent over twenty-seven years in South African prisons. When he was finally released, he had every reason to feel bitter, and to come out vowing to get revenge on those who unjustly deprived him of his freedom. Instead, he came out smiling, and seeking reconciliation with the leaders of the regime that had put him in prison. Thus he became the cornerstone of a new South Africa. If he had harboured bitterness, who knows what would have happened? In his autobiography, Long Walk to Freedom, he tells us: “I knew that people expected me to harbour anger against whites. But I had none. In prison, my anger towards whites decreased, but my hatred for the system grew. I wanted South Africa to see that I loved even my enemies while I hated the system that turned us against one another. I saw my mission as one of preaching reconciliation, of healing the old wounds and building a new South Africa.” Flor McCarthy in ‘Sunday and Holy Day Liturgies’ Matthew’s Gospel reminds us that what differentiates the disciples of Christ from others is their willingness to love as God loves. While the Book of Leviticus pointed out the demands of the Law, and spelt out the behaviour of the Israelites towards fellow Jews, Jesus will broaden the expected behaviour to include everyone, Gentiles as well as Jews, enemies as well as friends. We are challenged to act as God acts. He shows equal love towards the good and the bad, the faithful and the unfaithful because his love is not dependant on our response to Him. Jesus invites his followers to go beyond the demands of the Jewish law. “You have heard that it was said, ‘an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth’ but I say to you offer no resistance to one who is evil. When someone strikes you on your right cheek, offer the other as well.” When Jesus says, “Offer the evil man no resistance” he is not telling us to be passive in the face of physical danger or abuse. He is rejecting retaliation of any kind. We are not allowed to have hatred in our hearts for anything, even our enemies. When Jesus talks about an ‘enemy’ he is not necessarily referring to an enemy in war. He is talking about someone who is close to me –someone in my family, my community, my neighbourhood, my workplace, who is making life difficult for me. The enemy can arouse hatred in us, but we have to rise above it. “Love your enemy” is a radical doctrine, a rejection of violence. Returning love for hatred is one of the most difficult things in the world. It seems to be humanly impossible to do so. Yet, with the grace of God and the strength of his spirit it can be done. The God who challenges us to do so also gives us the courage and strength to do so. God’s Living Word “In all negotiations, the talented, the strong, the entrenched, the hard-working argue that they deserve more because of their contributions to the world around them. On the other hand, the poor, the less able, the unemployed can only highlight their needs. The latter’s case may not be heard but it is irrefutable. Every human person needs food, shelter, clothing, health care and the opportunity to live with dignity. Needs are always more important than desserts. We are stewards of our talents, not owners. Our strengths must flower in gentleness. Fortunately God always gives us what we need rather than what we deserve. We need his merciful forgiveness for our failure to live with an appreciation that all good things are his gifts to all humankind. His forgiveness is given to all whether we deserve it or not. Today’s gospel invites us to follow that example, to be always first movers in forgiveness, to be

[Goanet] There's more democracy in Goa
People's power is true democracy. And the voter is king. For the couple of months that I have seen in Goa, and from interactions with activists and urban villagers, Goans stand apart. Their sentiments are very strong. They have a say in the way they are governed. And their political leaders bow to them. There have been many instances to support this argument. The latest is the protests of the Curchorem residents led by Ghanv Rakhon Jagrut Manch marching to chief minister Digambar Kamat's residence in Margao demanding the scrapping of the proposal to expand the highway that connects the mining belt to Mormugao port to four-lane for transportation of iron ore, mainly being exported to Japan and China. The state highway connects Sanvordem and Curchorem in the Quepem-Sanguem talukas in Goa. The locals instead want the government to expedite land acquisition proceedings for the proposed 19 km Uguem-Capxem mining bypass, which can connect to the Zuari river from where the iron ore could be transported by barges to Mormugao port. Their reasoning is that the highway is already highly polluted and many accidents take place on the road. They do not want mixing up of mining trucks on the road and more traffic. The CM immediately called a representative team of the protestors for dialogue to his official residence in Panaji and assured the residents that the government would pursue the bypass and keep the four-lane road expansion in abeyance. Such responsiveness to people's demands rarely happens in India, where chief ministers are not accessible to their people. And most assurances are made only to be broken much sooner than later. The Janata darshans in most state capitals are farcical exercises just to gain some publicity. Residents of various villages in Goa have been protesting and taking out morchas demanding various things on the same issue and the government gives all groups a patient hearing. These are not the only issues on which one is basing an argument about true democracy being practiced in Goa. There have been many occasions when people have directly called up the chief minister or ministers concerned to get their grievances addressed. On several occasions, the CM and the ministers have got calls on their mobile phones even at midnight telling them that their locality does not have power supply. The political rulers have acted on such complaints immediately and got power restored to the localities. During a chat, Digambar Kamat argued that there may be several problems of the people. Their children may be studying for an exam, or somebody in the house may be ill. How do you expect the children to study for their exams if there are power cuts? he said. Do other CM's of our great nation think like that? Can people even get through the offices of chief ministers of Maharashtra or Uttar Pradesh? Or can they access chief ministers of Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh or Karnataka? Goa may be a small state, but the fact that the CM is accessible to the people on a cellphone in the middle of the night augers well for the society. On one occasion, a state transport bus broke down past midnight between Belgaum (in Karnataka) and Margao (in Goa). The bus passengers tried contacting officials to get help from the middle of the dense ghat section. Luckily, one of them had the mobile number of the Goa CM and he decided to call him for help. The state government immediately swung into action making arrangements for an alternative bus from Belgaum to reach the spot and pick up the harassed passengers. Another minister, Atanasio 'Babush' Monserrate goes out of the way to protect his voters. There was one incidence that a driver of a cab agency told me. When he was driving on the highway, another vehicle, a two-wheeler, crashed into the travel agency car. There was a crowd immediately around and arguments were on. Babush, as he is popularly known in Goa, happened to witness the accident. The minister got off his car, went up to the cab driver and told him that the two-wheeler rider involved in the accident was his voter and hence he (the minister) would pay up whatever was the cost of damage to the travel agency vehicle. Just leave him alone and don't trouble him. Bring me the bill and collect the money, Babush is said to have told the driver. The bill came to Rs 21,000. So the driver after getting the damage repaired went to Babush with the bill, and the minister without asking any questions gave the cash. And so does another minister Churchill Alemao, who goes to any extent in south Goa to protect his voters. People across communities give credit to the work done by opposition leader and former chief minister Manohar Parrikar of the BJP in Panaji constituency. Parrikar does not spend money like some of the other ministers do from his pocket, but the work he has done shows in Panaji, say most Goans. Go Goa, people's power is supreme.
[Goanet] Criminal complaint against NCP leader for illegal mining
Panaji, Feb 14 (IANS) Right to Information (RTI) activists in Goa Monday filed a criminal complaint against Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) national secretary Jitendra Deshprabhu and several top bureaucrats for illegal mining worth Rs.50 crore. Activists Kashinath Shetye, Ketan Govekar and Pradeep Kakodkar have said Deshprabhu had cheated the state government to the tune of Rs.50 crore due to the illegal extraction of ore in his mine located at the Pernem subdistrict in north Goa. 'We have filed a complaint against Deshprabhu for illegal mining and the chief conservator of forests, director mining, director transport and chief of the Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB) and the local panchayats for abetting the illegal mining, by not taking action against the crime in time,' Shetye told IANS. The complaint comes a fortnight after Chief Minister Digambar Kamat told the Goa legislative assembly that the senior NCP leader ran an illegal mining outfit. Kamat, also Goa's minister for mines, told the Goa legislative assembly Feb 1 that Deshprabhu has already been fined Rs.1.72 crore by the state mining department for illegally extracting nearly 50,000 tonnes of iron ore. Deshprabhu, however, has maintained that while the mine was located in his property, he was not responsible for the extraction of ore because he had leased the property to a contractor. Illegal and unchecked mining is a sensitive issue in Goa, with civil society groups and the opposition voicing concern about the issue repeatedly. According to data submitted in the monsoon session of the Goa legislative assembly, ore worth Rs.4,000 crore was illegally mined and exported out of the Goa to countries like China, Japan, Romania, etc. Leader of opposition Manohar Parrikar claims that nearly 18 percent of Goa's total 40 million tonnes mining output comprises illegally mined ore. He has also accused Kamat and several of his cabinet ministers of being in hand-in-glove with the illegal mining lobby. http://www.sify.com/news/criminal-complaint-against-ncp-leader-for-illegal-mining-news-national-lconOfjijac.html
Re: [Goanet] Glorifying colonialism: Ignorance of history or slavish loyalty? Uday Bhembre,
Santosh has hit the nail right on the head! Further, why should anyone vote for a party whose founder and head honcho peddles a blatant lie, makes a baseless accusation which flies in the face of the legislative history of Goa? In Portuguese days, if you wanted to damn someone all you had to do was to brand him a communist; today's equivalent word is communal. The Official Language Act was passed by the Goa, Daman Diu Legislative Assembly of which Uday Bhembre was an Independent Member. He was not a Ruling Party legislator. He was not even a Congress supporter, since the Ruling party had a comfortable majority on its own. This being the case, how could he have had any part in the drafting of the Bill or inserting the impugned words? Was the Congress Party so bankrupt of law-makers that they had to rely on outside help? Did Bhembre move an Ammendment to insert those words? The fact is that he did not even vote for the Bill; he and Luisinho Faleiro (another non-Congress member) had walked out of the House in protest against the inclusion of Marathi. Therefore, if anyone is to be blamed, it should be the members of the then Ruling Legislature party all of whom voted for the Bill. All this can be confirmed by just perusing any newspaper of the days when the event occurred. The newspapers are available for perusal at the Central Library, Panjim; all that is needed is a desire to know the truth. Having been on the high seas, or high on spirits, on the day in question is no excuse for not doing one's homework before shooting one's mouth or keyboard! A person who has no patience to check the relevant newspapers for information barely 24 years old, could not be expected to be accurate on matters which go back some centuries. So the rest of his post should be treated with the contempt it deserves. Why should others do his homework? Sotachench zoit zatolem. Re: [Goanet] India: Hostage to a Demented Culture
There is a lot of truth to what Rajiv has written below. The most important points are a lack of concern for others, poor understanding of our history and our past, misguided fascination with messianic figures and their anti-modern and post-modern views, lack of formation in the liberal arts, especially in Indian and western philosophy, and a morbid transformation of the entire education system into a vocational training program. To this I would add a complete lack of genuine pride and sense of responsibility towards the country. But the most important thing according to me, which Rajiv failed to highlight is the fact that these problems do not afflict the poor uneducated masses living rural India. They afflict the so-called educated and westernized rich and middle class people, the ones who are most likely to consider themselves modern and look down upon their fellow Indians as being uncivilized. Indeed, most of them are utterly ignorant about India's history and prehistory (or in the case of Hindu and other religious zealots, want to revise it) and are enamored by the post-modern. But contrary to what Rajiv says there is very little that is wrong with parenting in India or by Indian parents compared to western countries. All one has to do to know this is look at what has happened to parenting in the U.S. and other western countries. The problem in India lies squarely in the domain of education at all levels and lack of personal space due to overcrowding of cities. As such, he has no memory of the past and no idea of the future. He lives in the here and now. Just the other day, he fell and hurt his head. We took him to the emergency room at a local hospital, where the doctor examined him and declared him fit. The nurses cleaned the superficial cut on his head and released him. In the interim, I was heart broken to hear him utter the words, internal sorrow, not once but twice. As I got to thinking about his condition, I couldn't help marvel how closely it parallels the state in which India finds itself: without any wisdom from the past, without any vision of the future; just the here and now. The words internal sorrow are often expressed and lived out in the myriads of petty conflicts and self-centered postures. India is in a state of dementia, largely because of the here-and-now culture that has taken hold since the turn of the millennium. It is hard to discern if there is anything learned from the past or if there are any plans for the future. And let's not blame just the government or politicians; the citizenry has a lot to answer for. At a recent lunch in the Delhi Golf Club, I saw the unseemly spectacle of a child fooling around with the lawn umbrella, changing its incline in dangerous ways while his mother shoveled food into his mouth; or on a Spicejet flight a few weeks ago, where a mother, diverted her bawling son's attention by allowing him to play with the call button that summons a stewardess. Both taught their sons to be oblivious of other people who might be disturbed and diverted their attention rather than discipline them. Such children grow up to be inconsiderate adults, rich or poor, educated or illiterate, who have no restraints on public behavior and the need to be alive to the privacy and wellbeing of others. Thus, on an automated walkway at Delhi's dysfunctional Terminal 3, a couple, obviously well educated and affluent, walked abreast, not giving way, unmindful of me right behind them, in a hurry to get to the gate where my flight had been called. These child rearing practices have bred a uni-dimensional culture. Such cultures are demented in the sense that only a self-serving present matters; there is no learning from the past, no dimension of a better future other than instant gratification. Barbaric rituals and hypoglycemic hypocrisy are the hallmarks of such a culture. In the grip of this demented culture, India is increasingly rich but less modern; increasingly powerful but less civilized. And government and politics and corruption and inequity have little to do with it. Some years ago, I complained to a senior police official about the inability of his force to ensure the smooth flow of traffic. He looked me squarely in the eye and said, I could have five million traffic cops on the streets but still you will not have order; the culture seems to breed chaos. More recent: another senior

Democracy is more than corrupt politicians sorting out traffic incidents of their own voters , with money from their own pockets that in any case have been filled with bribes from their own voters and other people's voters and much corruption and extortion - that is why these politicians in Goa are all so wealthy, and wealth that has certainly not come as result of hard honest work, nor from their salaries as MLA and Ministers of Goa government and this is common knowledge. A Minister is voted to look after the interests of all citizens and not just that of their own voters - that is democracy. Corruption seems to be in the DNA of Goa government and administration. Unfortunately corruption has been taken for granted, and I feel is now part of the local culture and it seems that more and more people can no longer distinguish between right and wrong, rule of law and democracy and total shambles . The CM , Churchill Alemao and Babush and all the rest of them will of course promise heaven and earth to protesters to shut them up, especially as elections approach. Promises are just promises. There is a big difference between sorting out the power supply one night in some corner of Goa, or sending a bus to collect stranded passengers - there is a difference between that and real governance like stopping all the illegal mining in Goa, or scrapping grandiose plans imposed by the mining lobby, or stopping the builders from ruining Goa, or cleaning up the increadible and growing garbage problem, shortage of water, destruction of agriculture and a long rosary of other important issues in Goa. No Mr Pereira, what you describe is not democracy, but just pure hipocrisy and distraction from real serious issues in Goa. Yes there is the beginning of civil unrest in Goa, and I hope soon will develop into popular action like in Tunisia and Egypt. Finally more and more people are beginning to wake up and are up in arms fighting for justice, fighting against illegal plans in their villages and towns, and trying to protect what is left of Goa from being sold out, destroyed and devastated by ill conceived projects. If they eventually begin to win their battles, and see some concrete measures and actions, then yes, there will be a beginning of democracy in Goa. Carmen Miranda Date: Mon, 14 Feb 2011 10:30:56 + From: Mauricio Pereira People's power is true democracy.

[Goanet] Panjim's disgrace (Letter in Herald)
To Goanet - Finally after 8 days, my letter appeared in the Herald today (Feb 15, 2011). The unedited version is reproduced blow. My thanks to Shri Tombat for the courtesy. Addendum: The issue of noise pollution was raised in the recently concluded Assembly session by Manohar Parrikar. When I met Shri Parrikar a few days ago, he said that the response he got from the govt was that the cruise operators DO NOT have any permission to play amplified music. That the question of measuring sound levels does arise since amplified music is banned in the first place. So there. We have the cruise fellows operating within no regard for the law. And the police do nothing about it. r * For 4 years I have been fighting the menace of noise pollution on River Mandovi by the cruise boat operators. I have filed many complaints with the Pollution Board and made a dozen trips to the Collector's office over the years. But the problem continues to worsen by the year. Today I went through the rigmarole again. The Addl Collector sent me to the PI who in turn directed me to the DySP who routed me to the Pollution Board from where I rebounded to the DySP. It was like chasing my own tail. Every authority here knows that the cruise operators are in violation of the sound code but nobody has any desire to put an end to it. Why is amplified music allowed on the boats at all? Any civilized person wanting to enjoy a ride on the water would want to take in sights in a tranquil setting without having his ear drums pierced. It says a lot about the uncouth Indian tourists that Goa now attracts who require that noise accompany their public boorishness. And it says a lot about the Goan operators who pander to the base desires of the Indian visitors. There is a complete breakdown in Panjim. My PIL in 2007 had resulted in a High Court order that required the CCP to enforce civic discipline. But the migrants have turned our once-lovely city into a toilet and loitering hole. [Goanet] Mahanand Naik acquitted and the Judge Desmond suspended
Mahanand Naik acquitted and the Judge Desmond suspended Well, it was clear from today’s protest meet at Azad Maidan that 54 year old Judge Desmond D'Costa is suspended by the Bombay High Court for acquitting Mahanand Naik, the alleged serial killer. Suspended on 9th Feb 2011. Today’s 14/2/11 protest meet at Azad Maidan was attended by about 400 people mainly from Lawyers’ fraternity. About 2 doz speakers including Radharao, Fonseca, Aires Rod, Anacleto Viegas, Dr. Oscar Rebello, Thalman Pereira etc etc spoken one after another from 5.30pm til around 7.50pm Opposition leader Manohar Parrikar also spotted amongst the aam aadmi. Mostly attended by advocates e.g. Adv. Mike Metha, E O Mendes etc etc Matanhy Saldanha, some netters also seen around Judge suspended? What for? After suspension, won’t there be a enquiry or investigation? Or suspension means’ termination’ in this case? There is no any scope for appealing against the decision? Don’t really understand as to why there is such a hue and cry at this time. May be it’s a court language which is not understandable by people like me. The principle ‘Innocent until proven guilty’ does not apply to these type of cases? What the ‘suspension’ really mean in this case? Is it not like sort of a ‘cooling period’ after which the suspended person is reinstated in another district? Like it happens in Goa Police Dept and Dy. Collectors, Mamlatdars etc? Ok. If Mahanand is the route cause of all this (Judge Desmond acquitted him in two cases) Who will be the next now? Could it be Judge Nutan Sardesai who acquitted Mahanand in 4 cases? And then Judge PV Sawaikar who acquitted Mahanand in another case? It may be recalled that Mahanand is acquitted in 7 cases so far. It’s like court case ‘judge v/s judge’ I really find it difficult to digest when I suspect there is some sort of rivalry with the court. These areas are supposed to be looked upon in highest regards. From here justice is delivered. If there is no order or self discipline here then where else it would be? Just my thoughts. Re: [Goanet] India: Hostage to a Demented Culture
That Me first attitude seems to be growing in other parts of the world as well. My gut feeling is that we've become so engrossed in the rat-race to get to the unattainable cheese regardless of all else that we tend to forget that there's other people around. Why were the previous generations different? One reason may be because there were less people and less competition then. Another may be that the 2 world wars brought home to people the fragility of life, that life meant more than just living, that life meant sharing one's space and time with other people. Remember the slogan Make love not war? Today's car bumper stickers and wheel-covers appear to have aggressive messages rather than the lovey-dovey ones of the 60s and 70s. There appears to have been a total generational change in beahviour. 'Tis time to stop and smell the coffee and roses. India is in a state of dementia, largely because of the here-and-now culture that has taken hold since the turn of the millennium. It is hard to discern if there is anything learned from the past or if there are any plans for the future. And let's not blame just the government or politicians; the citizenry has a lot to answer for. ... Some years ago, I complained to a senior police official about the inability of his force to ensure the smooth flow of traffic. He looked me squarely in the eye and said, I could have five million traffic cops on the streets but still you will not have order; the culture seems to breed chaos.
[Goanet] Goa State Horticulture Department Corporation’s (GSHC) subsidized vegetables scheme
Goa State Horticulture Department Corporation’s (GSHC) subsidized vegetables scheme from Belgaum whole sale Market. It was a huge celebrations and smiles all around when this project was launched but in last few days the department is crying foul and blaming the Vegetable mafia for the crisis, that means they were all aware of this type of mafia existence in the market and it will cost most of the vegetable vendors from Belgaum and other parts of neighboring Goa who are the key players in the market. The above scheme by the concerned department is meant to provide subsidized vegetables to Amm Admi or Goan community? And also an rural employment guaranteed scheme, ( I am not sure if it is meant for the farmers who lost their farming land due to mushrooming of megaprojects and mismanagement of land by concerned authorities and land Mafias).HOW does it work?? Is these vegetables are sold at such a lower rates at the point of origin that these outlet can sell at half the price as compare to other retailers or the department is buying at higher price and selling them in loss? If GSHC can get these at cheaper rates and put some control or these so called Vegetable mafias and regularize the vegetable prices all over Goa. I can see the employment is granted but the subsidized vegetable for amm admi or Goan Community is an BIG?? Does any concern department has got any daily analysis of food items consumed by average goans including Vegetable, Meat, Fish and poultry products and also the Goan population against the non goan in the state? This will be an interesting picture to look at when the government comes up with such ideas of schemes, the Goans are fascinated with their love to fish and other non vegetable food habits and for last couple of years goans are even opted towards western type of food at the same time they love their vegetables. Then why the Govt. come with an idea to subsidize only vegetables and that also bringing in from other states rather then encouraging our own goan farmers to improve and increase the production, grow various products which are not been practiced in goa and not to rely on all food products from other states. If we look around the goan vegetable products has great potential, if the production is increased and encourage the farming community on goa, does the concerned departments doing enough towards goan farmers, they are busy selling and manipulating land records to sell and benefit their vote banks. During this period of the year if you look around certain region in Goa, Like Agasaim, Verna, Curtorim etc. people still cultivate the traditional vegetables and will find some ladies early morning caring their harvest door to door to sell and some seats at some corners in the cities. Some will spent their whole day in the hot and dusty highways, (thanks to the so called by-pass), they are fresh and healthy. During our childhood before 1988, my Granny and my mother and also lots of other families used to grow chilies, onions, which were enough for the one year consumption, we used to do two seasons of rice paddy more then enough to feed a family of 8 at that time 3 times a day rice meals, and during the summer season we used to grow all kinds of beans and it was a party for all (Now thanks to the konkan railway and some greedy politicians for their own benefits they destroyed this land on “Golden Corn” once said by then Zonal agricultural office) , there used to be a Gram sevak in each panchayant those and he used to take good care and pass on the required information’s, do they exist now in the system? We can see some few departments with CEO’s and Directors who might been selected by their political godfathers or they might be belonging to some political parties and who does not have any ideas and they don’t know what they were suppose to in their respective areas same as our elected people representatives. My concern and a question to every Goan, 1. WHY ONLY VEGETABLE is subsidized and why not fish which is also a dying tradition in Goa, 2. What the Department has done to provide assistance to few existing farmers and to encourage and to promote awareness among communities of these products. If we look around Goans pay any amount to get the fresh catch of fish, look are the Goan Bars who makes their good business because of Fish, people from Kerala enjoy their fresh fish as they have certain system in place to provide good rates for the local community and then only the can sell their products to other business ventures. Its happening ion gulf countries they are acquiring farming land in other countries, the time will come soon Goa has to acquire land in other parts of India to feed their own people.

Re: [Goanet] ultrasonic sound waves/radio frequency electromagnetic waves.
I am happy to scientifically educate Ferdinando and correct his mistakes even though he keeps trying to insult me for some reason. Most cell phones and cell phone towers emit radio waves just outside the range of what are regarded as microwaves. Microwaves is just a term generally used for radio frequencies greater than 1 GHz and less than 300 GHz. Most cell phones and towers transmit at frequencies below 1 GHz, more specifically in the range of 800 and 900 MHz. Some are still in the 450 MHz range. Only some 2G, 3G and 4G cell phones transmit in the low microwave range. More importantly, there is nothing special or dangerous about microwaves. The entire universe is bathed in microwaves, what has been called the cosmic microwave background radiation. In fact, the cosmic microwaves are smack in the middle of the microwave range. Their peak is at 160 GHz. They have existed in the microwave range since much before the formation of the solar system. In the peer-reviewed medical literature, scientific research on biological and health effects of microwaves and other radio frequency waves emitted by cell phones and towers, has been carried out on both humans and other animals. These studies have led to the conclusion that there is no reproducible and reliable evidence for any kind of health hazard from these waves at the powers emitted by cell phones and towers, to humans and other animals. So all of the claims made below by Ferdinando are false. Cheers, Santosh --- On Sun, 2/13/11, Dr. Ferdinando dos Reis Falcão drferdina...@hotmail.com wrote: RESPONSE : 1- Why does Santosh omit stating that cell phones and towers emit microwaves? Is it out of ignorance or is it that his reliable source from peer-reviewed medical literature is not crap but ‘bullshit’? 2- Medical research which can cause damage to the living are not done on humans, but on laboratory animals; like the birds and rats Santosh is surrounded with. And microwave emitted by cell phones for a certain period of time has been found to cause damage in experimental animals (as seen from my previous post). It is precisely why experiments cannot be conducted on humans. 3- Being scientifically literate like exhibited in the above post, is liken to Indians being 90% literate. It is necessary to be knowledgeable and use the knowledge wisely, and not reproduce verbatim limited book knowledge without any rational judgement of your own. A computer or a robot can do that. [Goanet] Pepsi Changes The Game on Radio Mirchi!
Pepsi Changes The Game on Radio Mirchi! Pepsi will replace radio jockeys with Team India players on Radio Mirchi for the whole day today, Feb 15. This ICC Cricket World Cup, Pepsi has launched a path-breaking campaign, ‘Change The Game’ to celebrate the new, unorthodox yet immensely popular face of modern cricket. Being the official sponsor of everything that is unorthodox about the sport; Pepsi has also changed the game across platforms including radio. For the first time, the Indian cricket team will let down their hair and talk like listeners’ friends on the FM airwaves, without the glare of lights and the flash of cameras, just before they are set to play for their country in the World Cup. Cricketers, Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Virender Sehwag, Virat Kohli and Suresh Raina will replace radio jockeys on Radio Mirchi 98.3 FM for the whole day on February 15. Speaking on the innovative radio initiative, Sandeep Singh Arora, Executive Vice President – Marketing, Cola, PepsiCo India said, “Pepsi has always been known for creating exciting, engaging and innovative experiences for the youth. This initiative on radio will give millions of Youngistaanis a unique opportunity to listen to their cricketing icons unplugged.” Fittingly, Mirchi’s flagship show, the breakfast show, will be hosted by Team India’s beloved captain, and national youth icon, Mahendra Singh Dhoni. And that is the very side of Dhoni that the listeners of Radio Mirchi will experience; the fun, relaxed, confident and friendly cricketer behind the star… the Mahi behind the MS! Imagine the frenzy, the excitement and the sheer craze as 98.3 FM will broadcast bright and sparkling in the morning, these words: “You’re listening to Radio Mirchi 98.3 FM with Mahendra Singh Dhoni, captain, Team India. Pepsi Changes the Game on Mirchi!” The captain will then pave the way for his teammates to follow. Virat Kohli will take on the next show and will talk about how he was smitten by the dressing room talks and his experiences with his seniors. He will also talk about how the youth identifies with expressions like tattoos and on field dancing. Next in line will be Suresh Raina, who loves singing and will talk about how the legends changed the game in music. He will also share his favourite songs and why he loves them. The day will come to an end with Virender Sehwag taking on the radio station. Sehwag will share the mahaul of Team India’s dressing room, nicknames of players, experiences – both on and off the field. Overall, it will be a never before experience for fans to get candid with their favorite cricketers as they change the game on radio! http://www.radiomirchi.com/goa Goanet News

Re: [Goanet] Eucharistic Miracles
The response appended below shows that the detailed explanation I gave in my last post regarding the biological impossibility of having a type AB blood with only a single set of chromosomes derived from the mother was not understood at all. This is the problem with people who make these wild nonsensical claims about modern science confirming their parochial supernatural beliefs. They don't understand the science even if you explain it to them in simple terms. I hope the situation is different with others who cared to read my post. My explanation was pitched to a high school educated lay person. But a student with a 9th standard level of understanding of biology should have had no problem following the argument. The parents had type A and type B blood, type AB and type A blood, or type AB and type B blood. I forgot to mention a 4th possibility, although statistically rare. Both parents could also have type AB blood. **I have no problem with the medical knowledge of blood groups. In the case in discussion, the blood belongs to AB group. It is the same as found in the Shroud of Turin, which has been proved to be genuine with all the modern scientific tests. It comes from the Mother Mary, Mother of Jesus, who has virginally conceived and given birth to Jesus of Nazareth (that is, without genital intercourse with her legal husband, Joseph, cf. Mt.1:18-23). It is a confirmation of the virgianl conception of Jesus. That is the historical tradition, now scientifically confirmed. The Catholic Church accepts this on sufficient grounds. Christianity is historical movement, not mythical religion. What is not possible for Science is possible for God. Regards. Fr.Ivo Now that's room service! Re: [Goanet] There's more democracy in Goa
Dear Mauricio, Your understanding of Curchorem agitation in itself is completely flawed and when the base is wrong what to say of the inferance? 1) You said: Ganv Rakhan Manch is demanding the scrapping of the proposal to expand the highway that connects the mining belt to Mormugao port to four-lane for transportation of iron ore. Ans: This is incorrect. There is no proposal at all to 4-lane highway that connects the mining belt to Mormugao port. GRJM is objecting 4-laning of road from Tilamol to Curchorem (connecting mines to Zuari)because it passes through thickly populated area where 3 people reside and 1 students commute twice a day. 2) 4-laning opposed by Curcorem municipality, Xeldem gramsabha during last two years. 540 people filed objections with Collector, CM six months back. Entire village committee opposed in Regional Plan meeting three years ago. Government/House committee opposed 12 years ago. High court passes strictures 10 years ago. Even then Government going ahead. WHAT DEMOCRACY? 3) If you see the road on Sundays, rainy season (no minig traffic) the road looks deserted. If mining traffic diverts, existing width sufficient for next 20 years. PWD says that widening is not their priority. They took up widening only because local MLA (a mining transport contractor) is forcing. An MLA has only legislative power. PWD is awarding him executive power. When asked, CM says he is in power do what you want. WHAT DEMOCRACY? 3) Curchorem connects Margao by two roads: State highway (SH-6) via Chandor and district road (MDR-40) via Tilamol. Giving priority to district road over State highway: is it not retograde policy? SH-6 is 7 km shorter than MDR-40. By widening MDR-40 and making people travel extra 7 km wastes fuel worth Rs 6 crore every year (and equivalent foreign exchange) and wear and tear of Rs 4 cr a year. VIVA DEMOCRACY? 4) CM yielded only to buy time. Agitators also made it clear that they will target his profits and his votes. He is foxy and knows if he doesn't bow now his transport may stop right now. See in June, when his mining traffic stops. He will dump assurances at Sonsodo. TRUE DEMON-CRACY: Of Digu, By Digu, For Digu + 40 chors + miners + builders. Rajendra PS; I am sending you separately complete dossier of the GRJM agitation. It pains that nij-Goekars can be so ignorant and mis-informed. I can take up visits for interested people a tour of mining belt on Satudays. Please contact by e-mail. On Mon, 14 Feb 2011 Mauricio Pereira wrote: People's power is true democracy.
[Goanet] Death of Goa's fields
To Goanet - Quick brief - On the way back to Panjim this morning from an early photo shoot in Loutolim, I saw a Goan farmer selling fresh vegetables by the roadside in Agacaim. Gaunthi vaingim - http://www.parrikar.org/images/samples/vaingim.jpg Looking at these magnificent brinjals I couldn't help but reflect on what might have been if Goan agriculture - and with it our traditional farmers, mostly gaude - had not been systematically destroyed and diminished. You can't get this quality of produce and its taste anywhere in the world, not even in fertile California. Goa could have been self-sufficient, and farming could have been an export industry as well. We could have employed all our traditional folks, saved our open spaces and fields, and thwarted the take-over by ghatis. Shame on us. The thug Monserrate has destroyed live cultivable fields in Taleigao to make way for monster concrete buildings, mostly to be lapped up by outsiders. If you have sampled the vaingim from Taleigao you will know what real vaingim taste like. Regards, r
