[Goanet] THE WRONG PERCEPTION ABOUT NO 13

2011-06-10 Thread Aires Rodrigues
There is a wrong belief that the Number 13 is unlucky. To me it has
been a good one. It was on a 13th over two years ago, that I had a
miraculous escape from those ferocious armed goons who attacked me at
Ashok restaurant in Panjim. Coincidentally, it was later revealed that
they were the 13th gang that was approached to liquidate me. More
recently, on the 13th of March this year, I was saved from the hassle
of being a part of the Corporation of City of Panaji’s political
garbage.

Indeed, the last number of my car is also 13. Whenever I have gambled
on that number I have always won. They say a cat survives 7 times.
For me may it be 13. While many may like to see me laid to rest, there
are some who need to see me alive. Our Advocate General Mr. Subodh
Kantak can hope to get his 15 crores in that defamation case he has
filed against me only if I am around. And now Father Newton Rodrigues
his $ 6,00,000. They must be both praying very hard that I live.

[Goanet] Anti-Corruption: Is Ideology of the crusaders as important as the issue?

2011-06-10 Thread SOTER
For those who collaborate with divisive forces in this country and claim that
they are supporting the issue of anti-corruption, perhaps the quote below by
Mahatma Gandhi from 'Hind Swaraj' may help throw some light.

"Your belief that there is no connection between the means and the end is a
great mistake. Through that mistake even men who have been considered religious
have committed grievous crimes. Your reasoning is the same as saying that we
can get a rose through planting a noxious weed. If I want to cross the ocean, I
can do so only by means of a vessel; if I were to use a cart for that purpose,
both the cart and I would soon find the bottom. "As is the God, so is the
votary", is a maxim worth considering. Its meaning has been distorted and men
have gone astray. The means may be likened to a seed, the end to a tree; and
there is just the same inviolable connection between the means and the end as
there is between the seed and the tree. I am not likely to obtain the result
flowing from the worship of God by laying myself prostrate before Satan. If,
therefore, anyone were to say : "I want to worship God; it does not matter that
I do so by means of Satan," it would be set down as ignorant folly. We reap
exactly as we sow."

FN; With respect to Goans or any other communities getting into politics of
countries other than say in the Gulf. Hope you are aware that there are
legal migrant control policies into those countries, which keeps the
migrant influx under control to levels as a result of which, even their
political entry wil not drastically impact local politics.

Arwin, What do you make of expat Goan communities getting entry intothe
political world where they stay?
PLS WRITE THIS DOWN, AS I HAVE EXPLAINED THIS POINT TO YOU EARLIER AND YOU
SEEM TO BE CONVENIENTLY FORGETTING. EXPAT COMMUNITIES WHERE I STAY HAVE NO
POLITICAL RIGHTS AND ARE ON TEMPORARY RESIDENCE PERMITS, WHICH CAN BE
REVOKED AT ANY TIME BY THE LOCAL GOVERNMENTS. WE HENCE CANNOT OWN THIS LAND
OR INFLUENCE THEIR POLITICS. AND WHATEVER HAPPENS THIS LAND WILL REMAIN WITH
THEM ; WHICH IS RIGHT BY THE WAY!!

Also, where do you get yourfigure of 40% from? Just xenophobic politicians?
SO WHAT IS YOU FIGURE FN. 5% , 10%, 15%. IF YOU ARE HAPPY WITH A LOW FIGURE
THEN I WILL NOT ARGUE IT.

Could you clarify whether statistics are maintained in Goa (or therest of
India) about ethnicity? AFAIK, the only question is "place ofbirth". At one
stage, six of eight members of our extended familywould have been considered
as "non Goan" going by that criteria. Please be careful as to whom you
disenfranchise in your zeal.
STOP COMPLICATING AND READ MY POST CAREFULLY, I FULLY UNDERSTAND MIGRATION
AND THAT PEOPLE INTEGRATE INTO LOCAL POPULATION AND LANGUAGE; NOT VICE VERSA
AS HAPPENING IN GOA TODAY WHERE THERE A RAPID AND UNCONTROLLED INFLUX OF
MIGRANTS INTO GOA

The issue of bogus voting needn't be mixed with ethnicity. A number
ofprominent individuals (from the anti-merger side) have made
publicstatements about their own bogus voting in 1967. Any comments on that?

Just miss the anti-mining euphoria that we were subjected throughout the months
of April and mid-may. Noises about Special Status also seems to have gone onto

Hi Folks,

Last night we were presented with a wonderful experience -- Goans, who had
migrated to Portugal, together with their sons, daughters and Portuguese
friends gave us a wonderful concert of Goan folk dances and music (some
originals composed by members of this group).

You can get some idea of what they gave us from their website:

 www.ekvat.org

You could write to them at

Their performance puts to shame some of our own productions. Further, they
managed to use the old traditional costumes and musical instruments.

Are there similar groups in your areas?

[Goanet] Hunger strikes....................

2011-06-10 Thread Vivian A. DSouza
Lets all go on hunger strike to change things in Goa.  Lots of things we can go
on hunger strike about

1. Indiscriminate mining
2. Corruption
3. Filth and garbage everywhere
4. Haphazard traffic
5. English and Marathi in our schools instead of only
    Konkani,

and on and on and on...

Forget about the democratic process, where power comes from the ballot box, and
the party or persons who get the majority get to govern.  Now we have a short
cut to get our way.call a press conference and declare a hunger strike till
death !

(fat chance of any one dying of hunger
it is all theatricsdoctors will proclaim that the faster is on the verge of
death, prominent persons will appeal to the faster to give up his/her fast, and
on some pretext the "fast until death" will come to an end)

No I am not belittling recent events in India.  But havent things gone too far
??  Persons with some name recognition, petulantly playing on the emotions of
those who look up to them, go on hunger strike giving un-achievable deadlines
or
else !!!   Sounds like blackmail to me.

Now, I am all for removal of corruption and corrupt officials and bringing back
ill-begotten gains to the country,  if they are adjudicated to be such.  But
this is a
democracy and collectively the people's voice is supreme,
Not the voice of one person or a handful of persons claiming to be civil
society.  And yes I am just as frustrated as anybody else with the slow pace of
change and the slow grinding wheels of justice.

Unlike some of the countries in the Arab world where tyrants ruled, India is a
democracy.  Not a perfect democracy, but as good a democracy as any place else.
So we cant mimic what the citizens did in those Arab countries.  All political
parties should respect the rule of law and remember that they too will have
their turn to
rule.  What they forget is that the un-democratic means that they support are
like a two edged sword that will come back to haunt them when they are back in
power.

Jai Hind !

[Goanet] COLUMN: Does Churchill Alemao deserve the credit for MOI

2011-06-10 Thread Nisser Dias

Does Churchill Alemao deserve the credit for MOI

By Nisser Dias
nisserdias at gmail.com
SMS to 9422437029

Last week the newspapers were splashed with self inserted advertisements
of MLAs and ministers, each trying to steal credit from deserving
parents for including English as medium of instruction at the primary
education level. Among those elected representatives trying to get
maximum unmerited mileage was Varca muscle man and PWD minister
Churchill Alemao and Benaulim MLA Mickky Pacheco each trying not only to
outdo but also discredit the other. There is an old saying, “If we can
get the crowd moving in the right direction the politicians will have no
choice but to get in front.

Churchill’s full page advertisement screamed, “The man of the masses
fulfils main demand of Medium of Instruction”. While front–quarter page
advertisement sarcastically thanked Mickky for, “What mess the, “So
called leader of masses” had done as Chief Architect of PDF Government
in 1991, has been undone by you”.

None of these characters have the right to claim credit for the victory.
As it is the parents of school going children who had upped their ante
against the wrong policy of the then Progress Democratic Front (PDF)
government in 1991- a government propped up by Churchill Alemao after
dethroning Pratapsing Rane government. The reason for toppling the
government was - he was not given a cabinet berth or not made a
minister. Ironically he is in the Digambar Kamat government using the
same tactics.

What credit can he claim when parents rose up to undo the wrong he had
done? Does it take ‘Man of Masses’ 20 years to realize his mistake? It
is an open secret that this same legislator did a volte facie on the
same issue during the assembly session in March this year and that too
after attending meeting of parents at Azad Maidan which forced the
Education minister to maintain a status quo on the issue. Churchill has
not even addressed the assembly on the issue. Where was the Varca strong
man when members of FORCE and some parents were arrested by the Margao
police. Infact he was agitated because Benaulim MLA was present at the
police station with those arrested and remained till they were released.
PWD minister was part of the delegation in Delhi, what could this man
possibly do to convince HRD minister Kapil Sibal? Firstly if Alemao
tried to speak in Konkani, Sibal would not understand and if Churchill
tried to put forth his views in English he would confuse HRD minister
further. Churchill Alemao has become a legend in his own mind and maybe
his daughter’s.

On the other hand Mickky Pacheco attended quite a number of meetings
called by FORCE to show his solidarity. He urged and made panchayats in
his constituency pass resolutions in favour of English as MOI. He also
debated on the issue in the last assembly session and demanded that
parents be given a choice. However even these efforts are not enough to
claim credit.

Only two MLAs who can claim credit for English being made MOI are
Calangute MLA Agnelo Fernandes and Curtorim MLA Reginaldo Lourenco.
Fernandes has been making this demand in the assembly since 2008 and he
received support from Reginald in 2009 however they have not claimed any
credit for the same as they know the victory is rightfully of the
parents. And unlike Churchill, Mickky and a few others they have not
inserted advertisements to claim credit.

People of this state especially from Navelim and Benaulim constituencies
should not forget Churchill Alemao’s election manifesto of opposing
airport at Mopa, six lanning of national highway. As of today he has
gone against all the promises made to the people after he got elected.
But then PWD minister has made a virtue of taking credit for everything
and classic example is not only MOI but also electrification of street
lights in Navelim constituency on his birthday in 2010. Incidently the
decorative street light were installed during Luizinho Faleiro’s tenure.

Be that as it may no individual politician or for that matter even a
parent can take the credit for forcing the government into submission of
extending grants to English as medium of instruction at the primary
level, it is the collective effort of the church, parents, associations
and individuals who worked at different levels to achieve the goal.
However though, one should not forget those who laid the ground work
with the vision to make English the medium of instruction one day.

For example All Goa Unaided Schools Parents Association (AGUSPA) had
raised the issue with Education minister Babush Monserrate way back in
2009. On impressing upon him that trend of commercialization of
education in Goa by managements of private unaided schools run by
businessmen can only be arrested by reverting back to English medium of

[Goanet] Can Bandh decide the future of our Children?

2011-06-10 Thread Joel Moraes

Can Bandh decide the future of our Children?

Since Liberation till I passed out SSC in the year 1989,
there were nothing called as Konkni medium Schools. The PDF government which
was the combination of MG and some Power hungry Congressmen forcibly changed
the MOI at the primary level to Konkni in the name of grants but they never
dared to apply the same to Marathi medium Schools. At the time of Konkni
agitation the so called present saviors of Konkni were the same ones who were
all out to oppose konkni as the official language of Goa.

There is really no point writing something lengthy against
those hypocrites who are facing a severe understanding problem. Their kith and
kin are getting the best benefit of English education, one of them even run an
English medium School and yet organize illegal morchas and Bandhs to prevent
the poor parents of giving the same English education to their Children. The
MOI is not at all an issue. It’s a simple and clear case, people have got the
choice between English, konkni and Marathi to chose as the MOI and there can’t
be better so called experts rather than the parents themselves.

Supporters of English are been termed as anti-nationals by
BBSM but the world knows who had plans to merge Goa with Maharashtra? With
regard to the ministers supporting Konkani as a MOI, why they don’t dare to
resign against their own governments decision? The reason is quite simple,
there is nothing so important than the money making Kodel for them.

My own village which is represented by a Varca man in the
Vidhan Sabha was 99 percent closed on the day of 6th June but that
doesn’t mean we all Cuncollekars support Konkani or Marathi as a medium of
Instruction.
On that day a place was opened in Cuncolim and sold things like Bhaji pao,tea
etc. at a black market day and made the best use of Bandh.

Re: [Goanet] Migrants, voters, etc

2011-06-10 Thread Frederick FN Noronha * फ्रेडरिक नोरोन्या *فريدريك نورونيا
Arwin, What do you make of expat Goan communities getting entry into
the political world where they stay? Also, where do you get your
figure of 40% from? Just xenophobic politicians?

Could you clarify whether statistics are maintained in Goa (or the
rest of India) about ethnicity? AFAIK, the only question is "place of
birth". At one stage, six of eight members of our extended family
would have been considered as "non Goan" going by that criteria.
Please be careful as to whom you disenfranchise in your zeal.

The issue of bogus voting needn't be mixed with ethnicity. A number of
prominent individuals (from the anti-merger side) have made public
statements about their own bogus voting in 1967. Any comments on that?

I guess it makes Sense since Goa's population is approx 40% migrants. Once
Goans go into a minority I assume they then would have a "Goan Cell". And I
won't be surprised if the other National Parties i.e. BJP and the Congress
follow suit (of course they particularly the Congress is already using the
non-goan vote to their advantage via illegal slums/migrant votebanks etc )

[Goanet] NCP Non-Goan Cell

2011-06-10 Thread Arwin Mesquita
As reported in the media, the NCP Goa Unit is planning to have a Non-Goan
Cell in Goa. I guess that this makes sense, as approximately 40% of Goa's
Population is Non-Goan; which has been rapidly facilitated by the successive
corrupt Goa Governments and of course it’s corrupt local Goan Population. I
will not be surprised if other National Parties like the Congress and the
BJP follow suit very soon. Also perhaps in the near future, these Parties
will have "Goan Cells" should Goans go into a minority, to then woo the then
minority Goan vote. Un-officially of course, all the National Parties are
already wooing the non-Goan vote’s vs.Goan to remain in the Power. To be
clear, I am not against Non-Goans and I myself have many Non-Goan friends. I
agree that migration is necessary into any community but I feel that each
community or state has tolerable levels/limits to accepting permanent
migrants. And these permanent migrants have to be accepted in a way, that
they do not radically change the local demographics or quality of life but
instead are integrated into the local population, culture, language and
identity. This holds same for Goa or any other community/state in India; or
for that matter other country in the world. The non-goan permanent migration
into Goa has way crossed the tolerable limits and this has to be addressed
immediately. The bottom line is that if "Goa is liberated from Goans in the
near future" then surely the 1961 Indian Intervention in the "so called
liberation of Goa" is the Biggest Fraud that has been played upon Goans.
Unfortunately Goans today are too busy today fighting amongst themselves
after being divided by corrupt/communal politicians; and in doing so we only
will be responsible for our ultimate doom!!
