[Goanet] Alemaos humbled By Rajan Narayan

2011-07-31 Thread SOTER
Should we Goans be carried away by this cheap piece of political analysis from
migrant fixers and brokers?
Rascals conveniently forget the time they were feasting on the controversy that
arose over the diocesan institutions shifting to English. Who were these
migrants supporting then, the church or those opposing the move?
Now they conveniently seem to forget that the devnagiri Konkani bandwagon which
could not see eye to eye with the marathi protagonists have embraced each other
to oppose the so perceived Cristaos demanding grants for English medium
schools. So times have changed and why shouldn't the church?
The Church has been used as toilet paper time and again by these very forces
which now dub cristaos as anti-nationals and Portuguese symapthisers and raise
questions over the non-contribution of the Church towards social issues in
Hindu Goa. Hopefully the MoI has been a learning experience for the Church
about the Bible of deceit and opportunism that flourishes under the guise of
Hindu secularism.
Unfortunately Goan memory is short. Migrants get treated as Gods by shameless
Goans.
This cheap peice of journalistic ejaculation will only be appreciated by
gullible goans.

[Goanet] Angley's Cup TT - Regal Electrotech crowned Champions, Manoshanti's Panjim TT Club emerge Runners-up

2011-07-31 Thread Sandeep Heble
Regal Electrotech beat Hotel Manoshanti's Panjim TT Club to be crowned
Champions of the prestigious Angley's Cup Table Tennis Team
Championship event, organised by Panjim Gymkhana. In the finals played
at the Gymkhana Hall premises at Campal, the Electrotech team
brandished a perfect score card to win the finals 3-0. For the
Manoshanti team, the loss through injury of their star player Noel
Noronha, who has been one of Goa's foremost Champions for the last two
decades, was a huge setback, but the team put up a spirited fight
against their opponents who had three top players from Maharashtra.

Noel Pinto set the stage on fire with an amazing display of control
and aggression to register a 11-8, 11-7, 11-7 win over Amit Naik.
Goa's seasoned player Ajit Ghantker engaged Eric Fernandes in long
rallies before going down to a 9-11, 10-12, 8-11 loss to the
Maharashtra No 2 seed. In the longest match of the day, Dhiraj Rai had
to fight a hard battle to overcome Manoshanti's Arun Naik in five
long-fought games before winning the epic 8-11, 9-11, 11-9, 118, 11-8.
Ashley Dias and Daniel Pinto were the other members of the winning
team. Shivadutt Kenkre was the reserve player for the runners-up.

Panaji city Mayor Yatin Parekh was the Chief Guest and distributed the
prizes in the presence of Mr. Prashant Kakode(Secretary, Panjim
Gymkhana), Narahar Thakur((Jt. Secretary, Panjim Gymkhana), Gaursih
Dhond of Manoshanti Hotels, Kishore and Atish Angley from Angley's
Sports and Subhash Kolwalkar(TT Coach). Co-ordinator Sandeep Heble
welcomed and proposed the vote of thanks.

[Goanet] 'Doga'-the latest canine craze, helping pets to find 'inner' peace!

Doga-the latest canine craze, helping pets to find inner peace!

After a hard day guarding the house and generally being kept on a tight
leash, a dog deserves some relaxation. And now it can, thanks to the latest
canine craze... dog yoga. Known as 'doga', it is the latest trend from the
Far East, which now has a cult following in the U.S.

In USA and Hong Kong, A renowned yoga instructor and dog lover, Suzette
Ackermann, is offering yoga classes for dogs to help them find their 'inner'
peace. Known as 'doga', it is the latest canine craze. She aims to help dogs
relax from their hard day guarding jobs. . Suzette is a dog lover and has
three lovely doggies named Sambuka, Snowball and Martini. The idea for the
classes first came to the fruition after she discovered that her own spaniel
enjoyed taking part in the exercise routine alongside her at her home in New
Jersey.

[Goanet] Mining discussed at the Goa Global Convention

2011-07-31 Thread Carmen Miranda
Soter Commented:
Leave aside the media, do the Goa miners and builders not control the
literary and activist circles and so claimed intelligensia of Goa? The
miners and builders decide who will rule Goa, isn't it?
While Vedanta's mining will get world wide publicity for its impact on Goa,
the filth of other culprits will be swept under the carpet and projected as
philantrophists. How many of the elite activists will boycott a social
function if the mining lobby is present or hosting it? These will be claimed
to be two different issues, isn't it?
Let us continue to celebrate in a fools paradise called Goa. As the bible
says, "How would it benefit a man to gain the whole world and lose his own
soul?"

Carmen's comment:
The initiative to speak about mining in Goa at Goa Global Convention was
precisely to expose the impact of all mining in Goa, the legal and illegal,
the illegalities of the legal who now we find are in fact also illegal, and
to dispel the myths regarding the "benefits of mining to Goa".

You can continue to celebrate " in a fools paradise called Goa" if that is
what you want to do. But I will meanwhile try my best to let at least the
entire Goan community worldwide (including Goa) know about the impact of all
mines in Goa and not only of Vedanta. Vedanta is of particular interest to
people in UK because it is the only multinational company operating in Goa
and registered in UK, so the British investors have a say about this
particular business. All the other mining companies are mostly "family
businesses" and possibly of more interest to Goans, because almost all
belong to Goans.

This initiative can be one among many catalysts for CHANGE IN GOA.
I don't give up easily.and no one in Goa should give up either. I
believe in the power of the TRUTH about this issue which people need to know
about.

Carmen

George commented:
"There should not be any doubt that Goa's media is on the side of the mine
owners, mega-project builders, politicians - they are linked through
business dealings, "awards" and "grants" for art and entertainment events,
sponsorships, advertising."

Reap what you sow
The wisdom of this proverb has not lost its sheen even to day You reap
trust by sowing honesty. Friendship is the result of planting goodness
Greatness is achieved by planting humility. Harmony is the outcome of
liberal consideration .Hard work is the pillar of success Sowing
reconciliation is to grant forgiveness.
Our tongue is doubled edged sword that cuts through steel and concrete
with ease like butter hence tongue can be our greatest friend and
enemy. Our ability to control it leads to our greatness and success.
If we tell ourselves that we have enough, we will never be found
wanting The tongue can slice through relationships or build bridges of
friendships It can be a soothing balm to troubled hearts and can cause
conflicts and wars
Prayer can be akin to the steering wheel and not looked upon as a
spare wheel in need To get a broad view we use the windshield to look
ahead and not rely on the rear mirror to view a small part not so
important of the past Hope can rescue us from despondency, despair and
end but to accept it as a small bend in our journey
God solves our wants if we have faith in his abilities and the if he
does not solve our difficulties he has faith in our abilities When we
pray for others it works wonders for them and indirectly you also get
relief and blessings Remember worrying only takes away the joy and

[Goanet] GLOBAL GOAN CONVENTION (UK HEATHROW)

2011-07-31 Thread vivek araujo
The UK Global Convention:=

This was my fourth convention in attendance and I thank God for giving me this
inspiration and blessing to attend these conventions. Every convention is
different in its own way which I feel is natural and much appreciated, this
convention was well organized and was great and honour to meet , interact and
listen to these two Goan intellectuals Dr. Teotonio R De Souza and
Dr.Damodar R Sardesai , Carmen Miranda’s presentation on mining was not only
heartening to see how mining has messed and is messing up the entire state but
surely and certainly a wake up call for all to act at the earliest and not just
say Oh my God Goa is gone and going , a very informative presentation by
Virginia Braz De Gomes, great speakers like Jason , Selma Ram Mavlincagcar,
Cliff , Eddie, Mrs Maria Fernandes Vaz and many more made the convention very
interactive and kept the momentum on a high and positive note ….the church
service was very touching on many factors to
hear the service in Konkani and English , the choir was superb….the sermon by
the officiating Priest was well addressed for that particular day.

I was taken aback (in a positive way) to see and hear the flawless speaker
Valerie Vaz , she is certainly a remarkable person and a great Politician.

But the last day was my most memorable day in London…these memories will
cherish forever….firstly to see the typical Goenchem Fest theme ….mouth
watering and sumptuous Goan food /delicacies …and it was the happening place
that day not only for Goans but I could see everyone enjoying , be it Goans,
Europeans and probably many other nationalities…..

It was none other than our Goan Golden Nightangle Lorna who mesmerized the
crowd the day and the climax of the Global Convention with her golden voice
….It was also my first time to see Lorna Live …what a great performer …..Norman
who accompanied her with music is an ace musician ..everything went so perfect
and a day not to be forgotten.

I express my thankfulness to the entire organizing committee of the Convention
for the superb Goan Hospitality rendered to me during my stay in London …may
the Good lord continue to bless you all in every way.

I would like to thank Selma , NRI Commissioner Shri Eduardo Faleiro, Mr. U. D
Kamat and many others for a wonderful thought by launching some great books
written by our Goan authors and getting these renowned writers /authors
together for this convention and recognizing their hard work and commitment ..i
say Well done.

In my next mail I will make a mention of some things which the organizing
committee of the convention could have done much better on those issues.

God bless you all and continue to work together for one common goal and
cause….Unity of and for Goans and Protection of our mother land in every way
…Amchi Goenchim Mai….GOA!!!

Jyotirmoy Nipendra Dey Murder Investigation- Tholas, Lakhobas & Media

Apart from arresting the murderers of Dey, if there is a thorough and a
comprehensive investigation to find out the motive behind his murder it is
quite likely that a larger nexus between Press, Police and Politicians
(PPP), a very dangerous one may come to the surface. This, however, the
media may not be ready to digest. Journalists are the voice of the
voiceless, the conscience-keepers of the nation. But, what if these
crusaders of democracy behave to the contrary? What if they are partners in
crime too??

A yoga instructor in Hong Kong is offering yoga classes for dogs to help them
find their ‘inner’ peace.
Known as ‘doga’, it is the latest canine craze, which now has a cult following
in the U.S, reports the Daily Mail.
The classes led by
renowned yoga instructor and dog lover, Suzette Ackermann, aims to help
dogs relax from their hard day guarding jobs.
The doga sessions
allow pups to work through poses including a series of stretches and
massages that are believed to help improve the heart and digestion.
And it also promises to foster a greater camaraderie between canine and owner.

honoured to be Goan and pleased to hear she has cleared this
issue on the net that she is indeed Goan. It would have been more appropriate
that she let attendees to the Global Goan Convention in London
know she was Goan as it appeared some of the attendees that sat through her
presentation thought she was Brazilian. I wonder if this made them
more attentive?

Save a mine, save Goa - stop using metal products
Mining in Goa is definitely an important issue and not to be joked about. It
has been a great achievement for Ms Miranda to be allocated slots to
speak at the Global Goan Convention 2011 in London and other prestigious events
but it would be an ever greater achievement if she and her
supporters of over 1,000 signatories and those supporting the cause on the net
practised what they preached by giving up using all products made
out of metal which will have an element from mines in Goa. In case any
individual signatory is not familiar with metal products may I present a small
sample: medical equipment, fridges, freezers, cookers, irons, plugs and fuse
boxes every household item we use has metal components from Goa
in them. You would also need to give up electricity (wiring is made from
metal), cars, trains and definitely trips to Goa would be a thing of the past
as
aeroplanes are also made of metal.

Powerpoint presentations and professional campaign videos too on the campaign
would need to be turned into sign language as computers you
use will be out of bounds. It is a bit like making a speech on the devastation
taking place in the rain forests of South America and writing your
speech on paper, one reason this devastation is still continuing or living in a
house made of wood. Strict vegans and vegetarians don't just not eat
meat, they also do not use any products made of leather, fur, etc.

Furthermore, do the Save the Goa campaigners living abroad and earning their
living realise their campaign would lead to unemployment for mine
workers, do they even care for their welfare?

The Save Goa Campaign UK (name taken from poster on tent at Goan Festival,
Cranford) with their financial strength have in their power to bring
this mining matter under firm control and stop Goa becoming history. They have
the ideal opportunity here to go back to the old days of living in a
mud hut with dung flooring, cooking with clay pots and firewood, using their
hands to till the soil, etc. because by not using products with metal this
would result in at least one Goan mine being closed, one village saved and the
first firm step to stopping the rape of Goa's hinterland, thus saving it
for future generations.

This campaign could mirror the stop smoking campaign the European governments
have put in place by working bit by bit to making it socially
unacceptable. A few years ago, everyone would have not believed that smoking
would be banned in offices and public places but here we are, it
has. In fact it is predicted children born in 30 or 40 years time will only see
a cigarette packet as a museum exhibit.

I am also happy that the Save Goa Campaign UK is considering an on-line
petition to encourage worldwide Goans to join . This would fulfil a
lifelong dream of our people in Goa that those of us living abroad return home
to their villages and lead the simple life our ancestors once led and
stopping it being taken over by foreigners.

Eco villages could be formed, our people could go back to paddy fields, coconut
plucking, fishing, milking cows, grinding flour, a completely happy
life without metal from Goan mines. No doubt, this would encourage a new form
of tourism.

Localise a local issue
When the miners in Chile were trapped underground, the Chilean president led
his people and took all out action to rescue them at any cost. The
whole world held their breath as each minor was brought to the surface alive.
This brought tears to my eyes and memories as a teenager of the film
Nirmon filmed in Goa which ends in an open mine blasting scene (now available
on www.fc-global.com in DVD format).

Ms Miranda writes "most Goans in Goa in fact are not aware of the seriousness
of the devastation going on in their backyards." I would like to
remind her that the mines are in Goa, the villages and villagers are in Goa,
the politicians allowing the rape of Goa are also in Goa, and Ms
Miranda is in the enviable position of speaking fluent Konkani to enter into
dialogue, debate and change with everyone there especially Sebastian
Rodrigues in the mining belt, also Cheryl D'Souza and Father Bismarque Dias,
the forerunners for the voiceless mining community. There is also a

Alemaos humbled
Jul 30th, 2011 | Category: Cover Story, Lead Story
By Rajan Narayan
The Alemaos were rebuffed by Sonia Gandhi who not only refused to to
review Valanka’s disqualification, but held out the threat that they
would lose the lucrative PWD and urban development portfolios.
IT ALL started with the Rajya Sabha election. With Shantaram Naik
completing his term of six years in the Rajya Sabha, the seat had
fallen vacant. I understand that the president of the Congress, Sonia
Gandhi, was very keen on nominating Luizinho Faleiro, general
secretary of the AICC in charge of the North East, as the Congress
candidate for the Rajya Sabha elections. Apparently, Sonia Gandhi has
been very happy with Luizinho Faleiro’s performance in keeping
Congress governments intact in the North East and his efforts at
destabilising the CPM government in Manipur. The incumbent Minister
for the North East has been very ill for some time now and Sonia
Gandhi apparently had also decided to induct Luizinho Faleiro into the
cabinet as the Minister in charge of the North East. The only question
mark was whether it would be possible to get Luizinho Faleiro elected
to the Rajya Sabha from Goa.
HIGH COMMAND
THE moment the Congress High Command included Luizinho Faleiro’s name
in the list of probable candidates for the Rajya Sabha seat, I
understand that Churchill Alemao and company rushed to Delhi and
threatened to vote against Luizinho Faleiro. Alemao’s apprehension was
that if his bitter enemy Luizinho Faleiro was inducted into the
cabinet, he would have more power and may undermine his position in
the Navelim constituency. Digamber Kamat apparently had his own
reservations about Luizinho Faleiro being nominated to the Rajya
Sabha. Luizinho had made a lot of enemies when he was the chief
minister in Goa and it seemed increasingly difficult to get Luizinho
elected in the face of the BJP deciding to field a candidate and
openly inviting dissident Congress MLAs and its alliance partners to
defeat the Congress candidate. So, at the last moment, the Congress
High Command developed cold feet and decided to re-nominate Shantaram
Naik as its candidate for the Rajya Sabha elections.
COLD FEET
In the back drop, another drama was being played out. Out of the blue,
Valanka Alemao, who is a recent entrant into the Youth Congress as
against her rival Pratima Coutinho, the wife of former president of
the Margao Municipal Council Savio Coutinho, decided to throw her hat
into the ring for the post of the president of the Youth Congress. Not
because Valanka had any great interest in either the youth of Goa or
the Youth Congress, but because, traditionally, the Youth Congress
president has at least been able to stake a claim for an Assembly
ticket. The chances of Youth Congress presidents and office bearers
being nominated for Congress tickets not only for Legislative Assembly
elections, but even for Parliamentary elections has brightened after
Rahul Gandhi took over the reins of the Youth Congress. In fact, in
recent elections to state assemblies, several Youth Congress leaders
have been given tickets to contest Assembly elections and some of them
have even won Assembly elections and been inducted into the cabinets.
Unlike in the past, Rahul Gandhi had decided that office bearers of
the Youth Congress would be elected and not nominated. To ensure that
there would be no favoritism and that there would be no rigging of
elections, Rahul Gandhi had tied up with an NGO called Foundation for
Advanced Mangement of Elections (FAME) started by former Chief
Election Commissioner James Lyngdoh, who were entrusted with the
responsibility of deciding whether the aspiring candidates had
followed the correct procedure. One of the conditions laid down in the
hand book or code of conduct given to all prospective candidates who
aspire to the position of office bearers in the Youth Congress was
that they would not canvass with the party officials or the chief
minister and ministers or seek endorsement from Congress politicians
holding positions of power in the state. So much so, when Chief
Minister Digamber Kamat, along with other Congress leaders, endorsed
and recommended the candidature of Valanka to the post of Youth
Congress president, the authorities entrusted with conducting the poll
held her guilty of malpractice. Her case was referred to the NGO
headed by Lyngdoh. She was issued a show cause notice and asked why
she should not be disqualified from contesting the Youth Congress
elections.
The Youth Congress elections were scheduled for the same day as that
of the Rajya Sabha elections to nominate a member to the Rajya Sabha
from Goa. The Youth Congress High Command, essentially meaning Rahul
Gandhi, announced postponement of the elections.
DIPLOMATIC MOVE
This was a diplomatic move to ensure that the Alemao brothers would
behave themselves and that there would be no obstacle in getting the
Congress candidate Shantaram Naik elected to the Rajya Sabha. In the

Dear Aries,

Reference to your email mentioned below on the ArchBishop being summoded
by the court. As a Goan and a devoted christian i am not too happy on
the ArchBishop being summoned.

I am reading a lot of articles of yours which you write and your fight
with people who are corrupt and against corruption but you need to be
focussed on the people whom you have fought battle earlier with
(Churchill bros , Monserate, Narvekars, Naiks the land sharks, Drug
Lords etc.) earlier to weed them out of the sytem. You need to take
the support of the church (Arch Bishop) the NRI's and the famous Goan
people to convey the message to the people to fight aginst the
corruption. Who better then the church and the like of famous people of
Goa who are against all this can do it.

Election is coming get the reality out to the people who is who and let
the people know who holds w hat (Property / Money )in which country and
place you have the support of the RTI to give you information . Start
the campaign now and faith in God you will be successful in your mission.

If you are asking in return for soemthing the people of Goa and your

BOMBAY ARCHBISHOP SUMMONED AS ACCUSED IN A DEFAMATION CASE

Mumbai Metropolitan Magistrate at Girgaum Court Mr. S.K. Karhale has
directed that the Archbishop of Bombay Cardinal Oswald Gracias be
summoned to appear on 2nd August 2011 to answer charges under section
499 and 500 of Indian Penal Code in the criminal defamation case filed
against him by a Mumbai lawyer Mr. Arcanjo Sodder

Coincidentally two Archbishops have to be in Court on August 2nd.
While Archbishop of Goa Filipe Neri Ferrao has to appear before a
Magistrate at Panaji to depose as a witness in the 2004 Ribandar
Church case, the Archbishop of Bombay Cardinal Oswald Gracias has been
summoned as an accused by the Mumbai Magistrate in connection with a
defamation case filed against him.

Interestingly while the Goa Archbishop has been summoned on an
application filed by Adv. Aires Rodrigues,  the Bombay Archbishop will
also have to be in court at the instance of an Advocate. But while the
Goa Archbishop has to step into the Court as a witness his Bombay
counterpart has to be in Court as an Accused.

Archbishop Cardinal Oswald Gracias is one of the five accused named in
the criminal defamation case filed by the Mumbai lawyer.  Father
Dominic Savio Fernandes the Chancellor of the Bombay Archdiocese and
Father Anthony Charanghat the Editor of the Catholic news weekly “The
Examiner’ as well as the Archdiocese of Bombay and the weekly “The
Examiner” are the other accused.

The five are being charged of having with common intention published a
false and defamatory article against Advocate Arcanjo Sodder.

The Mumbai Metropolitan Magistrate Mr. S.K. Karhale in his order
directing the issue of summons to the Bombay Archbishop and four
others makes a reference to the judgment passed last year by then
Justice Nelson Britto of Bombay High Court at Goa in the defamation
case involving Advocate General of Goa Subodh Kantak and Advocate
Aires Rodrigues.

[Goanet] IN MAPUSA: Seconds To Go... based on the garage sales concept

2011-07-31 Thread Frederick Noronha
When I mentioned the Mapusa-based garage sale venture, some friends
had already heard of it, and just wanted to know where it was located.
Surprisingly, I actually met Freda Vaz before encountering her outlet!

Bombay-returned Freda Vaz's  venture is called
Seconds To Go, and is based on the garage sale concept. She explains:
"People who want to get rid of their unwanted stuff, be it antiques,
wedding gifts, Gulf returning residents with goods to sell etc, prefer
to sell them from my shop rather than from their homes."

The goods are sold at St. Anthony's Apts., Shop 16, Block B, Near
Mapusa Clinic ONLY every Saturday morning from 9.30-12.30 and on other
days by appointment (mobile: 9823 251 180) after 5pm. The goods to be
sold have to be at reduced prices compared to new items, and Freda
works on a commision basis.

Items for sale range from crockery, to electrical items, curios, DVDs,
mobiles, crystals, cameras, watches, novels, furniture, toys and
anything in good working condition. Sounds like an innovative idea in
our otherwise waste-generating society. Why waste something that can
be reused by someone else? As for myself, I recall the 'swapshop' run
by the JS (Junior Statesman) magazine in the 1970s. It was great fun,
and I even managed to get a collection of stamps from the North East
via that! FN

[Goanet] A LIGHT FOR OUR PATH: EXCERPTS FROM THE CLOSING SPEECH OF THE FIRST CONSTITUENT ASSEMBLY OF INDIA BY DR. B. R AMBEDKAR, Chairman of the Drafting Committee of the Indian Constitution.(PART II)

2011-07-31 Thread Gerald Fernandes
A LIGHT FOR OUR PATH: EXCERPTS FROM THE CLOSING SPEECH OF THE FIRST CONSTITUENT
ASSEMBLY OF INDIA BY DR. B. R AMBEDKAR, Chairman of the Drafting Committee of
the Indian Constitution.(PART II)
“On the26th of January, 1950, India would be a democratic country in the sense
that India from that day would have a government of the people, by the people
and for the people. The same thought comes to my mind. What would happen to her
democratic Constitution? Will she be able to maintain it or will she lose it
again? This is the second thought that comes to my mind and makes me anxious as
the first.
It is not that India did not know what is  democracy. There was a time when
India was studded with republics, and even where there were monarchies, they
were either elected or limited. It is not that India did not know parliaments
or parliamentary procedure. A study of the Buddhist Bhikshu sanghas discloses
that not only there were parliaments--- for the Sanghas were nothing but
parliaments---but the Sanghas knew and observed all the rules of Parliamentary
procedure known to modern times. They had rules regarding seating arrangements,
rules regarding motions, resolutions, quorums, whip, counting of votes, voting
by ballot, censure motion, regularization, Res Judicata etc. Although these
rules of parliamentary procedure were applied by the Buddha to the meetings of
the Sanghas, he must have borrowed them from the rules of political assemblies
functioning in the country in his time.
This democratic system India lost. Will she lose it a second time? I do not
know, but it is quite possible in a country like India---where democracy from
its long disuse must be regarded as something quite new--- there is danger of
democracy giving place to dictatorship. It is quite possible for the new born
democracy to retain its form but give place to dictatorship in fact. If there
is a landslide, the danger of the second possibility becoming actuality is much
greater.
If we wish to maintain democracy not merely in form, but also in fact, what
must we do? THE FIRST THING IN MY JUDGEMENT WE MUST DO IS TO HOLD FAST TO
CONSTITUTIONAL METHODS OF ACHIEVING OUR SOCIAL AND ECONOMIC OBJECTIVES. IT
MEANS WE MUST ABANDON THE BLOODY METHODS OF REVOLUTION. IT MEANS WE MUST
ABANDON THE METHOD OF CIVIL DISOBEDIENCE, NON-COOPERATION, AND SATYAGRAHA. WHEN
THERE WAS NO WAY LEFT FOR CONSTITUTIONAL METHODS FOR ACHIEVING ECONOMIC AND
SOCIAL OBJECTIVES ,THERE WAS A GREAT DEAL OF JUSTIFICATION FOR UNCONSTITUTIONAL
METHODS. BUT WHERE CONSTITUTIONAL METHODS ARE OPEN, THERE CAN BE NO
JUSTIFICATION FOR THESE UNCONSTITUTIONAL METHODS. THESE METHODS ARE NOTHING BUT
THE GRAMMAR OF ANARCHY AND THE SOONER THEY ARE ABANDONED, THE BETTER FOR US" (
emphasis added)
Prescient ?  Is it not?
Gerry.

[Goanet] Cyprian Fernandes' Sunday Masala: Are we cursed?

2011-07-31 Thread Eddie Fernandes
Title: Are we cursed?
By: Cyprian Fernandes
Source: Goan Voice UK Daily Newsletter 31 July 2011 at www.goanvoice.org.uk

When it comes to Goans, not necessarily Goa, everyone it seems is an expert.
Me included. But I am embarrassed and absolutely astounded by Goans on
internet forums. Some of the comments, jibes, stabs are pathetic, and always
a waste of trees. As Goans we are renowned at fighting each other and the
Net has made it that much easier. No respect by people who have not been to
that place where they dish out portions of shame. In this day and age I
thought we were better than that: more tolerant, discreet, understanding,
caring and value when things are left better unsaid.

The Net forums are often becoming corridors of euthanasia: suicide of clear
thinking, or death by ego.

OK I was born and raised in Africa and I learnt this week (again) that Goans
born in that continent think of themselves superior to Goans born in the
sub-continent in the same way as Goans think they are different to all
Indians and seek special privileges. Why? The question may have been raised
at a post London Goan Convention press conference last week (unconfirmed)
but the conveyor of that information was so outraged that had she or he been
present, the unfortunate Indian journo would have received his come-uppance
for asking such a rude a question. Come on people, get your heads out of the
sand, we have been doing exactly that for decades and everywhere around the
world. When many around the world refer to Goans, they talk about the
minority Catholic variety. The historical mind-set is that only Catholic
Goans are the true Goans. Rubbish. I would not be surprised if the Hindu
majority has been imagined out of existence by denial. Goans are good at
that, denial.

Once the euphoria has died down and cool heads analyse the London Global
Convention then the true value of the event will be gauged. From the little
that I have read, I have my doubts.

For example, I don't know why it should need a convention to tell Goans to
"assert Goan solidarity." Surely we are mature and intelligent enough to do
so ourselves? Silly I thought, urging Goans to unite. Was it an exercise in
choosing pathos, as in spin by Dr Pathos? Or is it because we know we are
cursed with the gene of disunity and seeking Goan unity is an exercise in
futility. At stake is the complete obliteration of Goa as generations have
known it: thousands of outsiders are buying illegally built homes and units
(the big Goan sell-out, the money is great, why not?) which means more and
more Goans of every ilk will have to move out of their motherland. it won't
be their country anymore, they won't recognise anyone. And people who will
populate Goa will be the wealthy from every corner of India. The quiet, laid
back, susegaad Goa of yesterday will be but a dim memory. If outsiders have
not driven out the indigenous people, then the environmental destruction
surely will.

How can we unite when we cannot tolerate each other (not even in print) let
alone other Indians, other people? Were we really brainwashed by the
Portuguese to think that we were better than other wheatish, brown-skinned,
dark-skinned people? Some Goans in the UK find it difficult even to tolerate
the poor souls from Swindon. I suspect that the majority of the Goan
diaspora will think the messenger of the "assert Goan solidarity" message a
complete twit (a mild English colloquial descriptive). I think to myself
sometimes we are indeed cursed, are we? We can't be. The Catholics are God's
chosen people, just ask the Portuguese!

In general and specifically in the case of Mumbai, it is not the failure of
intelligence agencies that these unfortunate events take shape, but it is a
systematic leakage of internal security information from various enforcement

[Goanet] Angley's Cup TT 2011- Hotel Manoshanti's Panjim TT Club to clash with Regal Electrotech in Finals

2011-07-31 Thread Sandeep Heble
2009 Winners and second seeds Hotel Manoshanti's Panjim TT Club set up
a Finals date with Regal Electrotech in the prestigious Angley's Cup
Table Tennis Team Championship event organised by Panjim Gymkhana.
Both these teams reached the finals by registering identical 3-0
victory margins over their opponents in their respective semis matches
played at the Panjim Gymkhana premises.

While the Manoshanti team romped home quite easily with a comfortable
win over Mapusa Paddlers, hot favorites Regal Electrotech, featuring
3 top players from Maharashtra, were made to battle hard by last
year's winners BPS Club, Margao.

Amit Naik put the Manoshanti team ahead by smashing his way to a 11-8,
11-8, 11-3 win over Yash Naik. Ajit Ghantker made it 2-0 with another
easy 13-11, 11-7, 11-6 win over Suneet D' Mello. In the third
singles, Arun Naik was stretched to the limits but recovered well to
beat a fighting Myron Pereira 10-12, 4-11, 11-5, 11-9, 11-8.

Though the scoreline would suggest an easy victory, the other semis
was a thriller with Goa's best competing against the best from
Maharashtra. Eric Fernandes, a former India player was expected to win
easily, but was given a tough time by Goa's No 2 Player Agnelo Naik
before prevailing to a 11-7, 11-8, 10-12, 11-7 laboured win. In the
second singles, Goa's top paddler Diljeet Velingker was all set to
shock Noel Pinto. At one stage, he was up 2 sets and leading 4-1 in
the fourth, but the Maharashtra player displayed better nerves and
composure to close out the match with a 7-11, 11-9, 8-11, 11-7, 11-5
five set win. Dhiraj Rai bt Tejas Shevde 11-9, 11-5, 11-7 to make it
3-0 for the Regal Electrotech and send the defending champions
packing.

BOOK REVIEW: ... and you thought Goan women couldn't be good romance writers?

By Maria de Lima Pereira
taurus20...@gmail.com

Two sweethearts Darrell Correia and Michelle Albuquerque are
ruthlessly separated on the eve of their wedding day by the
ruthless hands of selfishness, greed and debauchery through
an intricately spun web of lies and deceit. They are
manipulated by Craig and his mistress Wendy -- who pretend to
be well wishers of the couple -- to accomplish their own
nefarious goals.

Darrell and Michelle are very pained, even so many years
later, about the tragedy of that horrible, fateful evening,
that was caused by each other's 'misdeeds' and 'betrayal'.

But through pain, distance and time one beautiful emotion
remains constant -- Darrell and Michelle's love for each other.

They meet again after five painful, tumultuous years; each
one a changed person. Can Darrell and Michelle overcome the
obstacles of all the misunderstandings, secrets and cynicism
to find their way to each other once again, and understand
that the same love and trust they shared five years ago can
be had even today? Will Darrell realise that for him it's
'Heaven In Her Arms' only?

Ria Gomes debut novel 'Heaven In Her Arms' spans
seven years and deals with various emotions --
love, desire, fear, betrayal, mistrust, cynicism -
the main players experience as face life's myriad
  occurrences.

The pain Darrell, Michelle and Armand have needless suffered
and their inability to do anything about their hapless
circumstances at that point of time, is both heart wrenching
and poignant.

The author writes with an effortless flair that is very
sensitive towards her characters' experiences and emotions
and her readers' sensibilities at the same time. Making this
romantic plot convincing are genuine characters which are
well sketched enough to create a vivid pictorial thus making
them very real and alive.

The novel succeeds in tugging at the readers' emotions and
the heart strings with every scene and page, sparking anger
and indignation at the injustices done. So much so that a
sensitive reader will feel for them; will laugh with them,
cry with them, share their pain, joys, sorrows and beliefs;
understand their circumstances, their mind and beliefs,
rejoicing in their triumphs, as if they are not fictional
characters anymore but are part of our lives. They have
carved a niche for themselves in our hearts.

"I had intended to write a story people would cherish a
long time," explains Ria. Gomes was born and raised in
Salcete, Goa, and has been residing in Oman, the Middle-East,
for more than a decade.

The pain Darrell, Michelle and Armand suffered needlessly
brings tears to my eyes "For me, as I write my stories, e
characters I create slowly begin to take a life of their own.
My characters tell their own story, I write it for them and
yes, that includes the love scenes. So yes, in a way, they
are my friends. I still know Darrell and Michelle and her
father as I would know real people who are my friends," she
agrees.

The tender intimate moments between Darrell and Michelle,
which are absolutely essential to the story, are beautifully
and intricately woven into the plot and well-scripted in such
a way to show that a body is a means for the heart, soul and
mind, to really become one in sacred act of love (not lust in
this instance) between soul-mates. And it feels absolutely
right, not wrong.

Ria confirms this thought. "When I write romances
with sizzling hot love scenes between a man and
a woman who are on their way to creating an
everlasting bond of love, for me, those are the
most amazing moments of my characters' lives.
That is where the heart and mind and soul of my
characters are laid bare along with their bodies.
It is that sacred act where the most life-altering
changes occur, and that, for me, is simply beautiful."

Goan readers will certainly be able to identify with the
characters, settings, plots, emotions and lifestyle in the
story. As they get acquainted with this young
'couple-next-door', readers will understand that Darrell
Correia is a strong, earthy kind of man but also a
passionate, deep-feeling one, on matters of the heart; while
circumstances and upbringing force Michelle to take certain
the decisions.

The novel is an engaging and stimulating read from the
beginning to end. A 'can't-put-down' book and then you need
to read it again and again until every word; every nuance and
emotion is absorbed. This is a must read book for those who
believe in soul mates and their power of eternal love.

Ria is a talented romance writer who has shown that we Goan
women have it in us to be great romance writers. I love this
novel and forward to reading all the novels that flow out
from the pen of this talented and sensitive Goan writer in
the future.

Church certificates
Registration of birth, death, marriage is compulsory in Goa >hence it
si incumbent upon the the Registrar of births and death to preserve
this vital information and make it available to the person as and when
he needs. He was called the CONSERVADOR during Portuguese times, meaning
thereby a PRESERVER of records. The records are in shambles, torn,
mutilated, which fact should make the authority liable to prosecution.
People do not have the time and energy to pursue and hence the
authority goes Scot free.In order to reconstruct the records the
Registrar request photo copies of Church records The church records
are maintained with utmost accuracy and are absolutely reliable and
valid . There is no question of any manipulations , as one copy is
safely preserved in church archival records It is noted with
satisfaction that the church documents will henceforth will be
accepted as authentic. If the same are valid for reconstruction of
unavailable records with the Registrar the same should be officially
declared as valid for all purposes, thus saving the citizens of
unnecessary trouble. Such a declaration is not announced to the public
as yet The news from Pamela through Joseph is a much awaited relief

[Goanet] Mining discussed at the Goa Global Convention

2011-07-31 Thread SOTER

George commented:
"There should not be any doubt that Goa's media is on the side of the mine
owners, mega-project builders, politicians - they are linked through
business dealings, "awards" and "grants" for art and entertainment events,
sponsorships, advertising."

Comment:
Leave aside the media, do the Goa miners and builders not control the
literary and activist circles and so claimed intelligensia of Goa? The
miners and builders decide who will rule Goa, isn't it?
While Vedanta's mining will get world wide publicity for its impact on Goa,
the filth of other culprits will be swept under the carpet and projected as
philantrophists. How many of the elite activists will boycott a social
function if the mining lobby is present or hosting it? These will be claimed
to be two different issues, isn't it?
Let us continue to celebrate in a fools paradise called Goa. As the bible
says, "How would it benefit a man to gain the whole world and lose his own
soul?"
