[Goanet-News] NEWS: Larger Saligao sans political veteran (Vijay de Souza, Times of India)
Larger Saligao sans political veteran Vijay de Souza, TNN | Aug 7, 2011, 01.18AM IST While Saligao constituency's demography has undergone a sea change after the delimitation exercise, its political landscape will be without a veteran player. The constituency, expanded to include Calangute constituency's Pilerne, Reis Magos and Nerul villages, while retaining Sangolda, Guirim and Saligao, will see Saligao-resident Wilfred de Souza step out of the political race. The retired surgeon, who has worn several political coats since his debut in politics with the now defunct United Goans party, told STOI on Saturday, I am not very interested in contesting for the Saligao seat. The former chief minister's son-in-law, Tulio de Souza will, instead, contest. Tulio has been working in the constituency. He was my election manager for 2-3 terms, Dr Willy, as he is better known, said. He was, however, non-committal on whether this decision meant he was retiring from active politics. Health-wise I am very fine, the octogenarian smiled. The new constituency's dynamics, on the other hand, work very well for local BJP MLA Dilip Parulekar. Sources say that the BJP had carved out the constituency at the time of the delimitation exercise as it was found favourable for them. This might just continue to hold true for the party as the majority community's vote base has now upped from around 55% to 65% in the new constituency, sources added. Dilip, who runs a construction-material business on Chogm road in Porvorim, said he has undertaken several projects in the present constituency, that too while being in the opposition. I've been working at the grassroots level from day one. Developmental works of over 40 crore have been undertaken in the constituency, and with the support of the BJP cadre, I am confident of a second term, Dilip told STOI. Another Parulekar, vying for the Saligao seat, is equally confident of winning. Veteran politician Suresh Parulekar who is senior vice-president of the state NCP has made it clear that he intends to contest the forthcoming elections from the constituency. The former industries minister of the Congress in the 90s, Suresh, who has been Calangute MLA twice, has taken up issues of OBC reservation, BPL cards, over the last few months, sources said. The new Saligao constittuency is better for me than the Calangute constituency. Inclusion of the three villages-Nerul, Pilerne and Reis Magos-has given a boost to my candidature, as this was my strong base all along, Suresh claimed. Incidentally, both Parulekars belong to the Bhandari Samaj, a dominant factor in the constituency. While Dr Willy will not figure in the Saligao contestants' list, his one-time PA, Trajano D'Mello, who plunged into the electoral fray in 2002, is determined to try his luck again. As an independent, his performance against his former boss in 2007 is rated as good as the latter was then state president of the NCP, which, in turn, was a pre-poll partner of the Congress. Much depends on who will eventually be in the fray, said Trajano, adding that whether NCP will be in alliance with Congress again too will be a crucial factor. Claiming that he has been working in the new Saligao constituency for the last four years, Trajano described the situation as fluid and said the inclusion of the three new villages has not altered his prospects. Tulio, an architect by profession, will be contesting the assembly elections for the first time. Having been behind the scenes for three elections with his father-in-law, Tulio is seeking a Congress ticket though he is yet to join the party. The first experience with electoral politics was bitter for Tulio. It was for the Saligao seat of the zilla panchayat election held a-year-and-a-half ago. The former president of the Goa chapter of the architects association, lost to Michael Lobo by over 500 votes. Though I lost, I could poll more than 4,000 votes. I went back to the grassroots level building up my base, he told STOI. I have been in public life for over 10 years-been past president of architects' bodies, served on government bodies like director of GSIDC and member of GSPCB and am serving the second term as vice-president of MUCB, besides various others village-level committees, Tulio rattled off. For quite sometime now, Tulio has also been working to revive and promote agriculture in a big way and to revitalize sports organizations. Among others who may contest the assembly seat are president of North Goa zilla panchayat, Jayesh Salgaonkar, and former PDA member Devanand Naik. Analysts further say that as three villages-Pilerne, Reis Magos and Nerul-were formerly in Calangute constituency, MLA Agnelo Fernandes will also be a factor in the Saligao election. Going by the present situation, there are many aspirants to challenge the sitting BJP legislator, Dilip Parulekar. Most of them are seeking NCP or Congress tickets. If all of them or even most contest, there will be

[Goanet-News] Goanet Reader: Letter from Portugal -- Culture Shock! (Jason Keith Fernandes)
SUNDAY, AUGUST 7, 2011 Letter from Portugal: Culture Shock! By Jason Keith Fernandes jason.k.fernan...@gmail.com Speaking somewhat flippantly, but not entirely unseriously, one of the lovely things about being Catholic is that it allows you to be at home in the world. You know that where ever you may go, no matter what the language spoken in the region, there is a set of people who move through the same motions as you when in community prayer. So all you have to do is bob along with the ritual motions, mumbling the prayers in your language underneath your breath, and voila, you can imagine yourself back home, worshiping the way in which you did when you were little. For this reason, in the course of my many travels, and especially when homesick, the local church has provided a space to return to the womb, be it St. Paul's Church in San Francisco (that operated as the set for the film Sister Act), the Mesquita in Cordoba or the Igreja de Santa Catarina and the Capela do Rato in Lisbon. There are times though when all is not quite what you expect it to be; my experiences in the churches in Lisbon having been along those lines. There is a certain, shall we say, laxity among those who attend Mass in Lisbon. It should be borne in mind that while Portugal is referred to as a Catholic country, (whatever that may mean) at least in the urban centers, and among younger generations, there are not too many who attend church on a regular basis. It appears therefore, that a Church in decline is grateful that there are people attending Mass in the first place, and would rather not berate the requirements of comportment when the precious few wander in. And such comportment! Take for example the situation where once they enter the church there is no expectation of sitting in silence until the priest enters to commence the Mass. Oh no! They enter and chatter, fall on each other in greeting, kissing and exchanging all manner of information. I kid you not, this one time, when entering the uncommonly crowded Capela rather late, I almost passed out, seeing a couple snuggle up to each other, apparently to save space for more people. If you go to church a couple or more minutes earlier, in the hope for a quiet prayer, more often than not, you are wont to hear someone chattering away. You could ofcourse leave this private, intense prayer time for once the entire Mass is over. But this option presents its own challenge. You see, at least in one of the locations I frequent for Mass, the congregation bounds out of church the moment the priest leaves the altar; regardless of the fact that the choir is still singing the recessional hymn. It is only in the villages, my informants assure me, that people still wait for the hymn to end. This leaves you looking like a yokel, when you stand, refusing to budge, until the hymn ends! And yet for all of these shocking transgressions of propriety around the time of the Mass, there are some norms that the Portuguese follow that speak to the lack in Goan practice. For example the respect shown to the Blessed Sacrament as it makes its way from the altar to the tabernacle after the Communion rite. Almost without fail, the congregation stands up, as it should, in respect. In the often woefully empty Igreja de Santa Catarina, they continue to follow a touching custom, where after the Communion rite, the Blessed Sacrament is held aloft as it makes its way to the tabernacle and is shielded part of the way by an embroidered umbrella. A home away from home it appears, can at times allow for culture shock! -- A version of this post was first published in the O Heraldo 7 Aug 2011

Mr Parikar spiting Fire Mr Parikar who was a C.M. is feeling like fish out of power in the role of the leader of opposition. He has been seeking opportunities that will propel him to power He is giving background support to MOI issue, firing his guns from the shoulders of BBSM.Let him state clearly, that the official language is KONKANI Have the guts to state that Marathi is not the mother tongue of Goans The MGP riding on the wings of BJP lost the valuable foot hold it had in the past. Why the BJP having largest strength in the house have to make common cause with the BBSM? It will learn the bitter lesson at the hustings associating with elements discarded in the reckoning of the state politics. They are confirmed enemies of preservation of identity of Goa People have not forgotten their treacherous role of merging Goa with Maharashtra and in which she did not succeed.Parikar must realise the folly of involving innocent students of school and college to fight the issue of MOI, when they have no conception of stakes involved On the contrary the FORCE has wisely involved only the Parents and in proper forum The violence and street politics supported by Mr Parikar is at the lowest level of intelligence and is to be condemned by right thinking Goans The instigation through Court have not received the anticipated support Will Parikar answer ,if not suffering from amnesia, that when the switch over to Konkani was made it was instantaneous with no training ,preparation and fitness of those who were to deliver. There were no protests then Marathiwadis were not in the forefront in the agitation for recognition of state language It is wishful thinking that this issue of MOI is a fresh launching pad for Kakodkar or platform for Parikar to regain his lost glory The open challenge to Govt daring the Govt to arrest him and now serving an ultimatum to release those arrested in connection with Bali riots is encouraging lawlessness. Earlier he reduced the age of retirement of the teachers and shamelessly went to sympathize with the striking teachers and offer moral help He is treacherous person and will stoop to nay level to project himself as a saviour. His conduct in the last assembly session in approaching menacingly as he was slighted is not lost on any one Parikar will be the man in perpetual waiting like Mr Advani. Re: [Goanet] Gandhi Dynasty - Politics as usual
The Sycophancy mindset of the leaders of the Congress Party vis a vis the Gandhi family is indeed pathetic. Unfortunately there does not seem to be a truly viable alternative to this situation. All the seemingly intelligent and articulate Congress leaders are hiding behind the folds of Mrs. Gandhi's saree. I am not impressed with the BJP either. They appear to object tooth and nail to every initiative put forth by the Congress, without charting their own distinct course.

[Goanet] Banyan tree
Interesting story by Fred Noronha on the origin of the name of the Banyan tree. Does the tree also have some religious symbolism for Hindus ? I noticed that there often is a Hindu shrine in the shade of the Banyan trees that I have seen. I have a Banyan tree that traverses the property fence between me and my neighbor. I wanted to cut my part of the tree dowm, but felt that there was some reluctance on the part of the worker I hired to do so. I was wondering whether this had to do with a religious belief. Perhaps our knowlegeable Hindu friends could advise.

Re: [Goanet] Tony Robbins asks why we do what we do | Video on TED.com
Con, Agreed fully with Joel. I went through this thrice. It is very informative and makes a lot of sense! Tony Robbins talks about six human needs: * Certainty/Comfort. We all want comfort. And much of this comfort comes from certainty. Of course there is no ABSOLUTE certainty, but we want certainty the car will start, the water will flow from the tap when we turn it on and the currency we use will hold its value. * Variety. At the same time we want certainty, we also crave variety. Paradoxically, there needs to be enough UNcertainty to provide spice and adventure in our lives. * Significance. Deep down, we all want to be important. We want our life to have meaning and significance. I can imagine no worse a death than to think my life didn't matter. * Connection/Love. It would be hard to argue against the need for love. We want to feel part of a community. We want to be cared for and cared about. * Growth. There could be some people who say they don't want to grow, but I think they're simply fearful of doing so -- or perhaps NOT doing so. To become better, to improve our skills, to stretch and excel may be more evident in some than others, but it's there. * Contribution. The desire to contribute something of value -- to help others, to make the world a better place than we found it is in all of us. The last two are the most significant. I would suggest that Goan society has a whole lot of contributors. People building social capital across time. Educational and health institutions. Club-houses across the world and kudds in Bombay. They become the people who contribute the most the society. Question: what do we do to nurture these in today's world? Re: [Goanet] Banyan tree
Just to clarify ... this was only quoted by me, not written by me. In Hinduism, the banyan tree is considered sacred and is called Vat Vriksha. God Shiva as Dakshinamurthy is nearly always depicted sitting in silence under the banyan with rishis at his feet. [Goanet] Cyprian Fernandes' Sunday Masala: Coming soon, the Goan tsunami?
Title: Coming soon, the Goan tsunami? By: Cyprian Fernandes Source: Goan Voice UK Daily Newsletter 7 Aug. 2011 at www.goanvoice.org.uk There is a need to galvanise every man, woman, and child into a human tsunami to clean up Goa. It is to Goa's eternal shame that all aspects of environmental management, especially, appear to be piece-meal, uncoordinated, helter-skelter and often disorganised and corrupt. In comparison with the developed world, Goa, in many respects, is still in the dark ages: The mines department renews leases, the ministry of environment and forests (MoEF) grants environment clearances, the forest department gives wildlife and forest clearances, the Indian Bureau of Mines approves plans, the Central government's mines safety department monitors safety aspects and Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB) grants consent to operate under the Water and Air Acts. In most western countries, it is the Environment Protection Authority which does all that as well policing, monitoring and prosecuting offenders in the Land and Environment Court. In Goa recently there were infringement notices given to several mining operations but no one in government knew which department would enforce them or prosecute the culprits. Most fingers point at Goa's Chief Minister who is also alleged to have a hand in the illegal mining operations. Goa is sinking in the morass of institutionalised corruption and it will take the equivalent of a Royal Commission to expose all the criminals and clean up Goa. Egyptians have said no to corruption and are continuing the battle for honest government. Many Egyptians have died in this cause. Can Goans (both Catholics and Hindus) do that, do they have the will? You don't need a revolution, democracy has many instruments to attain justice for all. Goa must decide it wants a safe and sustainable environment and then go ahead and put in place honest people who will deliver honest government with honest policies. Some will ask: is this possible with corruption firmly in place in the Goan DNA in Goa? Only Goans can answer that question. Carmen Miranda has made some headway in making UK Goans aware of the impending environmental disasters. She was assisted by an enthusiastic bunch of people who included Recruitment and Canvassing Manager (Fiona Lobo), Festival Organiser (Brian Fernandes), Co-ordinator (Cedric DeSouza), Treasurer (Selina Desa), Fund Raising Manager (Edna Fernandes) and a lot of dedicated people who were surprised out of their skins by the support and donations they received at the UK Goan Festival. I am not even sure overseas Goans care enough unless they are approached at a venue like the recent UK Goan Festival. I understand that the Goa Foundation has been solely responsible for bringing illegal miners to the courts. Carmen has been working through the Goa Foundation but as yet there is no concerted effort, no collaboration, no bringing of all the people in Goa and overseas together to save Goa. This is a huge task and will require many millions of dollars and thousands of Goans to achieve the goal. In the process, a new Environment Protection Plan must be nurtured and allowed to deliver a clean environment. We must galvanise every man, woman and child into a human tsunami to clean up Goa. It could only happen in silly Goa where the deputy speaker of the parliament has a two-page Happy Birthday spread. Corruption? Would not happen in a developed country. Culture cringe attack! For years now, Goans have been drinking suspect water. I am not aware of any clinical studies that have established the pollution of the water today. However there is strong suspicion that mining has contaminated springs, dams, rivers and other catchment areas thereby further polluting drinking water with hard metals. It remains a suspicion and must be proven in an environment court and reparation done. A longer version of this column is available at www.cyprianfernandes.blogspot.com

-- Forwarded message -- From: Dumb Little Man - Tips for Life t...@dumblittleman.com Date: Fri, Aug 5, 2011 at 10:13 PM Subject: Dumb Little Man: 8 Reasons Why Success Eludes You Dumb Little Man: 8 Reasons Why Success Eludes You 8 Reasons Why Success Eludes You Posted: 04 Aug 2011 09:46 AM PDT Life has a tendency to surround us with so much 'stuff' that we often forget the the end game, or the goal we're striving for. Years are burned this way. You wake up after 3 years at a job, having never been promoted, and wonder what happened. Are you destined for mediocrity? Do you not know how to move forward in life? There are never simple answers here. If there were, we'd all be clown-happy 24/7 and frankly anyone telling you that they can solve all of your problems is more likely to inject you with nothing but false hope that will eventually lead to your failure. So let's step back for a second and hit on a couple of reasons why you're not leaping forward towards your goals. Again, not a fool proof plan but if one of these resonates with you, take steps to correct or modify the situation. a.. You're Not Putting In Enough Time The first rule about achieving success is that it won't magically happen overnight. It often takes weeks, months or even years to achieve it. If you think that you can put in a few hours of work and see the results you want, think again. Before you blame anyone or anything else with your lack of success, ask yourself the question if you've been putting in enough time or have you been taking shortcuts? Be honest with yourself. Have you? b.. You're Not Putting In Enough Effort If being successful was easy then don't you think everyone would be successful? It takes a serious amount of hard work and effort to be successful. If you want to lose weight or gain muscle, you need to train hard for weeks on end to see results. If you want to make money or build your business, you need to work hard at it. If you want to get better at socializing, you need to put in the effort to learn to get better. Are you putting in enough effort to get the success you want? I've personally written over 250 unique articles related to personal development before I started seeing any significant results with my blog. Considering that each article is about a different topic and is over 1000 words long, it's indicative that it requires hard work - a lot of it - before seeing success. c.. You're Not Following A Proven Strategy Even if you're disciplined enough to put in a lot of time and a lot of effort, if you're not following a proven strategy for success you're just wasting your resources. Break apart your goal into smaller pieces and then look for someone that has perfected the pieces so you can then determine what works and doesn't in your situation. With pretty much everything that you're trying to achieve, there is someone who has already done it before you. Why re-invent the wheel? You'll see results much faster if you take a method proven to give success and put your time and effort into following a that strategy as it pertains to your goal. However, go in knowing that there is no template so you have to somewhat make the process your own. d.. You Have A Bad Sense of Entitlement What I mean by this is that you don't feel that you deserve the success you want to achieve. If for any reason you subconsciously believe that you're not good enough for the success you want, or that you haven't really done anything to deserve it, then you're trying to swim against the stream. You know where you're going but you're fighting yourself every step of the way, and sometimes even sabotaging your own progress. Your subconscious mind is like a machine, and it's designed to do exactly what it's been programmed to do. Your subconscious mind is programmed by your conscious thoughts and actions. Both good and bad habits reside in your subconscious mind and you know from the definition that a habit is an automatic action created through conscious repetition. Thus...if through your own thoughts or social conditioning, you've programmed your subconscious mind in a way that you're not good enough to achieve success or that you deserve to achieve success, you'll always be fighting yourself. (e.g. If you always tell yourself I'm a loser then your subconscious will always guide you towards things that will make that statement true.) Stop thinking negative thoughts and start to reprogram your subconscious mind with positive and successful thoughts. e.. You're Not Giving Enough Value Give and you shall receive. In most cases you need to give value before you

Subject: India's Gandhi to undergo surgery abroad http://www.reuters.com/article/2011/08/04/us-india-gandhi-idUSTRE77320L20110804 India's Gandhi to undergo surgery abroad By Matthias Williams NEW DELHI | Thu Aug 4, 2011 9:05am EDT (Reuters) - Sonia Gandhi, India's ruling Congress party chief and the country's most powerful politician, will undergo surgery abroad, possibly in the United States, for an undisclosed medical condition and could be out for two to three weeks. The absence of the 64-year-old figurehead of India's most prominent family dynasty may further hamper the Congress-led coalition government, which is already seen as rudderless amid a raft of corruption scandals and public fury over high inflation. It could also accelerate the rise of her son, Rahul, one of a quartet of people appointed to take charge while she is away and considered to be India's prime minister-in-waiting. Generally her condition is satisfactory but her operation has not taken place as yet, Janardan Dwivedi, a general secretary of the party, told reporters. In a sign of the confusion amid the surprise announcement, Dwivedi first told reporters that she had already undergone surgery, before correcting himself. He said the surgery would be abroad and local media said it could be in the United States. The Italian-born Gandhi is the leading figure of a family that has ruled the country for much of India's independence, holding together the biggest national party through electoral troubles and scandals in this country of 1.2 billion people. Her leftist leanings have proved a strong influence over a government officially led by the more reformist Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and she has pushed pro-poor policies such as food subsidies and guaranteed employment for villagers. She nominated Singh as prime minister in 2004 and is widely considered to be more powerful than him, governing India from behind the scenes from her leafy bungalow in the capital, New Delhi. QUARTET Her son Rahul has increasingly taken on a national political role, gaining headlines for his defense of farmers protesting land acquisition for industry and infrastructure and seen as a champion of the poor visiting small hamlets and spending the night in villages. It is rather unusual. But it looks like a move to prepare Rahul Gandhi for his ultimate coronation, said Amulya Ganguli, a political analyst. Apart from Rahul, the quartet comprises Dwivedi, Congress political secretary Ahmed Patel and Defense Minister A.K. Antony, All of them are seen as close advisers to Gandhi. The choice of Antony, over that of cabinet heavyweights like Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee and Home Minister Palaniappan Chidambaram, will add to talk of him being a possible replacement for Singh if the embattled prime minister leaves office before the end of his current term in 2014. Manish Tewari, a Congress spokesman, declined to comment when asked if the four should be seen as potential future leaders, saying that for now they would simply look after Congress' day-to-day affairs in Gandhi's absence. Sonia Gandhi's family has been at the tragic center of India's history. Her husband, Rajiv, and mother-in-law Indira, were both assassinated. Indira Gandhi's father, Jawaharlal Nehru, was India's first prime minister. The daughter of a Turin builder who married into India's first family over 40 years ago, Gandhi swept to power in 2004 on a wave of anger among the country's hundreds of millions of poor, who voted out the Hindu nationalist government after feeling left out of an economic boom. Despite being re-elected in 2009, the Congress party-led government has suffered from a string of corruption scandals and high food inflation, and her leadership has been increasingly questioned as being out of touch.
[Goanet] Mamlatdar... first class magistrate?
In response to: Message: 7 Date: Thu, 4 Aug 2011 08:54:50 -0400 From: Pandu Lampiao pan...@gmail.com To: Goa's premiere mailing list, estb. 1994! Subject : Mamlatdar... first class magistrate? Pandu is right; almost all Notaries attest blindly for a good fee but Mamlatdars do it a lot cheaper but with lot more fuss. I had once a very unpleasant experience. Just before my daughters wedding I went to see the Registrar at Margao and told him that my son-in-law to be was from Navelim and since it came under his Jurisdiction, asked him what documents were required, I was told I should get a residency certificate from the Canacona Mamlatdar stating that my daughter was from my village. So I told him that I had my daughter's ration card, passport and the election card which specifically state that my daughter is form Nuem of Khola village in Canacona Taluka. So he said even then the residency certificate was needed. So I walk into the Mamltdar's office a few days later, with all the required documents at my disposal, I asked my daughter to sit outside and I went to the Mamlatdar, being a Judicial Magistrate, had to ask permission if I could come into his presence, my wish was accepted and there I was infront of him with all my documents (daughter's), birth certificate, election card, passport, school and college certificates along with my ration card, with me as the head of the family and my daughter's name clearly mentioned on it, my passport, election card and ofcourse the original telephone and electricity bill and house tax receipts. I am sure some may wonder why I had to carry all the above mentioned documents. It's no laughing matter from past experience I know our authorities can ask for any weird and absurd and we are expected to produce it. Here I am in front of the Mamlatdar, Yes, why are you here ? was the first question, I wasn't surprised at all with the absence of any courtesy, well I said, I am told that I need to have a residency certificate for my daughter's civil registration, are you from Canacona ? Was the next question followed with, have you taken a residency certificate before ? Yes, I am from Canacona and no I have never taken a residency certificate before. Ok was the call and do you have your daughters birth certificate, ration card, election card ? Yes and here they are. The Mamlatdar looked at the name on the ration card and then the election card and then looked at the birth certificate and there was a sly smile on his face (probably thinking of a bribe), he said the ration and the election cards were ok but birth certificate says born in Margao, which would be a problem, do you have the school certificate ? yes, and along with that I gave the Graduation certificate as well, hummm, we certainly have a big problem here, he said, I was amused, I had all my documents right and what could be the problem ? Then came the sarcasm, he said your daughter was born in Margao, finished school in Margao and College too in Margao so how come you are here, you should go to Margao for the residency certificate. Surprisingly I did not loose my cool, I gave him my very broad smile and I asked him if he had been to my village and he said yes, so I asked him if he saw any hospitals there, the smile had disappeared, so I went on I am sure you did not see any hospitals but did you see any good schools ? Again no answer and I made a further point, there are no colleges either, so how did you expect me to get these certificates from Canacona, Canacona proper is 30 KMtrs from my village and Margao is 23 KMtrs so where do you expect us to go ? After some time he asked me to show some other proof that my daughter was the resident of Nuem Village. So I said, the ration card says she is the resident of the Village, the passport says she is the resident of the village, and the election card too says she is the resident of the village what more proof do you need are all these documents not authentic ? After sometime, he was at it again, and said that it is my problem and not his, and asked me if I had the telephone or the electricity bill on my daughter's name, it is here I lost my head and asked him straight if he was a Goan, and told him that in Goa we do not register our houses in our children name and asked if his house in his native villages was registered in his daughters name ? That ruffled him up and he asked me to go out of his office, I said why and if I had broken any laws ? I told him that I have my house in Nuem, in the village of Khola, in Canacona Taluka, showed him the tax receipts, showed him the telephone bill and the electricity bill and my election card and told him that I am a resident of Canacona and as I pay my taxes it is the duty of the local administration to present to me the documents that I require without any further delay and told him that I will not move out until I get my daughters residency certificate and warned him that if I was further

AArakshan controversy The film has not been released and it has been cleared by the censor board established by law The politicians have prejudged the issue acting. abrogating to themselves as super sensor In India the politicians have no respect for established Institution Where is the scope for the arbitrary decision for the politicians to override the expert opinion of the sensor board there is no talk about division of opinion among the members of the censor board With their experience and expertise they have passed the film without even suggesting cuts Praksh Ja has in the past successfully explored new issues sensibly and without any uprising and raising of passions. The issue of reservation initially was for a period of 10 years. It is now over six decades but the reservations issue is becoming curious day by day There is no doubt that certain class of Indians need special measures for upward vertical movement on the social ladder But extending this idea to ridiculous limits for vote gathering has its repercussions too. Merritt cannot be totally sacrificed at the altar of expediency, without alienating the intelligent group of students left out high dry for want of place to pursue their avowed vocational and professional preferences Even in the higher levels of Education reservation and not merit is playing havoc with mediocracy What happens by putting square pegs in round holes? does it not lead to frustration of talent ? Indians are leaving the shores to find place in higher studies elsewhere The issue of reservation and increasing the quota for various castes and section is enlarged without taking into consideration the right of those entitled on merit The Govt , while increasing the seats of reservation ,must separately create intake capacity to accommodate them The progress and development cannot be achieved by mere reservation alone Nobody objects that these section of population, disadvantaged financially ,be given financial assistance, hostel facilities and special coaching to come to the desired level of competition Nowhere in the world mere caste ,tribes are favoured for preferential admission without qualifying standards The film yet to be released is an bold attempt to highlight the pent up feelings of frustrations of vast majority left out in the cold of general category of the students The politics of vote bank is dividing the population into two distinct camps and thus compelled to harbour burning anger of being impotent. The issue can raise a healthy debate of reasonable reservation and give new directions to take reality into consideration .For all that we know this raging controversy about the film can only fuel curiosity Many films made on terror, sex education ,riots, partition and other sensitive issue have been fruitful depiction and the censor board has singularly taken responsibility with care. Hence the politicians have no need to undermine the institution constituted for the specific purpose Let the people first view the film and then hear the opinions. [Goanet] Reflections after Global Goans Convention - Reply to Jason Keith Fernandes
This response is in reply to Jason Keith Fernandes - Message 6, Goanet Digest Vol 6, Issue 744 (A version of this post was first published in the Gomantak Times 3 August 2011. Jason wrote: An artiste attending the convention from Goa, suggested to the organisers that given the Convention was called the Goans Convention, it should include all Goans, not just those from a particular community? Point well made, but it seemed to implicitly blame the local organisers? (a largely Catholic group) for not including those from other communities. The sentiment of this artiste was probably right. There should have been members of other Goan communities in attendance. And yet, who is to ensure that this happens? The local committee alone, or the Office of the High Commission for NRI affairs? ..Was this absence due to a deliberate exclusion, an oversight and the failure to actively invite, or the result of a longer history where there is hardly any relationship between the Goan Catholics and other groups of Goan origin? Melvyn responds: Jason, you may or may not have already read my Message 6, Goanet Digest Vol 6, Issue 700, where in the first paragraph I wrote: Quote In its global headquarters in Porvorim, the air would have been full of excitement as staff prepared to take the 2011 Global Goan Convention to the United Kingdom having been to other countries previously since 2005. I feel sure that in this euphoric atmosphere, it can be excused that in no- one's mind, either in Goa or London, it was felt necessary to check whether the membership of the host organisation i.e. members currently on their books, was proportionate to the number of our people living in the United Kingdom, to ensure it genuinely represented their views, or did they check? Unquote Whilst you have referred to an unnamed artiste who you say commented as to why our people living in other communities who were Goan were not represented at the Global Goan Convention London 2011, in the first place, can I ask you and the unnamed artiste if you are both aware if the current membership of the host organisation is proportionate to the number of our people living in the United Kingdom to adequately bring forward their views to a Global Goans Convention? The reason for my question is that as an honourable volunteer worker for the original host organisation since 1974 I did not renew my membership in 2007 in disgust as I did not feel I was belonging to a community organisation any more. [Goanet] Bicholim police talking tough, looking to fine errant motorists
-- Samir Umarye *BICHOLIM* Bicholim police has asked the two municipalities in Bicholim taluka to specify the parking space for vehicles so that action can be taken against the errant motorists. According to reports, the Bicholim police sent a letter to the Bicholim and Sanquelim muncipal councils, asking them to specify parking place for vehicles, especially on the market day. It may be stated that there is a serious traffic problem on the market days in Bicholim and Sanquelim. Traffic has grown manifold but the roads and the space is almost the same and during market day it becomes very difficult for people to enter and exit the market. To add to this, people park their vehicles on both anywhere in the market a Bicholim-based businessman told Herald.
Re: [Goanet] (Santosh Helekar)Murder-Suicides The Mental State of Mental Health Professionals.............
Dear Santosh, The connection between Spirituality and Psychotherapy is so well accepted in scientific literature published by different researchers in different parts of the world by different religious inclinations, that it does not require anecdotes in Newspapers to draw sweeping or weeping conclusions. The anecdote referred to in my post served as a convenient nail to hang the coat about the concept of Spirituality in modern scientific medicine, yes I repeat Spirituality in modern scientific medicine. That your hope thatNo religion or supernatural belief system should be ever mixed with science or scientific medicine stands as much chance as an ice cube in fire to survive ,since it is not supported by scientific evidence. Quite to the contrary it is accepted that the various schools of psychotherapy subscribe to an underlying theory of working which is informed by a BELIEF SYSTEM. ( Refer Spirituality in Counselling and Psychotherapy by Dennis Lines Sage Publications, New Delhi) Whether the School of therapy be Freudian, Jungian, Rogerian, or any other system including Logotherapy, they all have underlying BELIEF PREDICATES/PROPOSITIONS. Leave alone psychotherapy, the Harvard School of Medicine through its Dept. of Continuing Medical Education conducts programmes on SPIRITUALITY AND HEALING IN MEDICINE and this programme has been accredited by the Accredition Council for Continuing Medical Education ( ACCME) . Even a cursory glance at published medical literature, let alone a deep study, should be able to convince you that Spirituality and Spiritual Practices have physiological effects that have not only been measured under SCIENTIFIC LABORATORY CONDITIONS but have also been shown to be predictable and replicable. The Psychiatrist is as much at risk in his professional health as an industrial workman or firefighter or soldier or kite flyer! An article SPIRITUALITY AND OCCUPATIONAL HAZARDS OF PSYCHIATRY by DR. J P Pandarakalam (which will be forwarded to you seperately due to current space constraints) would help you re-visit your unscientific beliefs grounded in casuistry. Permit me to assert that Extensive therapy can foster narcissism for individuals who are so absorbed with themselves that they fail to see that healing may require them to seek an engagement with others ( whom they so conveniently demonise) As a noted personage once remarked ,the problem with psychiatry is that it does not lead patients to become penitents. This posture stymies the realisation of their human potential. What theologians refer to as SIN, lawyers refer to as CRIME and Psychiatrists as COMPLEX. Very much before Psychiatry was born , these symptoms which modern psychiatry refers to as neuroses and psychoses, were recorded in plays of Shakespeare. It is understanding the content and context that the healing power of the Sacrament of Reconciliation (Confession) comes into great use. With every good wish, Gerry.
[Goanet] A Goan Saint.
Not likely, not anytime soon. We ought to proclaim the two padres 'people's saints.' Facist groups like the Mormons and State Marxists create icons to be deified, and Franco's hitman, the Rev. Josemaria Escheverra did not have to wait long to be canonised. He had founded the secretive cult that continues to flourish across the globe. It has a small following of pathetic and hapless 'penitents' in India. eric.
[Goanet] NEWS: Larger Saligao sans political veteran (Vijay de Souza, Times of India)

[Goanet] Goanet Reader: Letter from Portugal -- Culture Shock!
[Goanet] Off topic - Chinese agency downgrades U.S. credit rating
Mervyn Lobo writes: The US sold their debt to the Chinese and now want to tell the Chinese that the Chinese currency is over valued?? The Chinese currency is backed by enormous reserves of the US dollar... Comment: Take a look at trade balance data.(http://dataweb.usitc.gov/scripts/cy_m3_run.asp) The smart Chinese people would say: buy gold rather than US bonds, but then who would buy Chinese goods? Available data indicates that the Chinese own about 8% of the US debt. Most of the US debt is owned by American people and the American Government. (http://usgovinfo.about.com/od/moneymatters/ss/How-Much-US-Debt-Does-China-Own.htm). If it came to that, the American people could assume that 8% owned by the Chinese and take measures to resolve the trade imbalance that is the root cause of this problem. Also it should be noted that the main question about the Chinese currency is that it seems to be about 20%-40% undervalued vs the USD and not over valued as stated. .http://money.cnn.com/2010/05/24/news/economy/yuan_revaluation/index.htm)

Dear Gerry, It is quite normal to be dazzled by all the flashy self-help books and websites that are published today to cater to a vast postmodern readership, making all kinds of sensational claims about how this spiritual technique or that or this religious/humanistic belief or that cures disease. But let me tell you that if you read and try to understand what is published in the genuine peer-reviewed medical and scientific literature, you will find that there is absolutely no evidence for any kind of spirituality playing a role in the scientific treatment of any serious physical or mental illness. The claims you are making below in your latest post and your last post are not supported by real facts. More specifically, there is no evidence supporting your following claim implying that the murder-suicide rate among psychiatrists is greater than among Catholic priests or any other type of priest, and that providing a particular kind of religious/spiritual training to psychiatrists who belong to different religions and non-religious creeds would be a beneficial, or for that matter, even an ethical practice. QUOTE We are all aware that psychiatry is a very demanding and stressful profession, quite akin to the vocation of Catholic Priests administering the Sacrament of Reconciliation to the Catholic Laity. However the murder-suicide rate in Catholic Priests is almost negligible verging towards non-existence. Can modern Psychiatry and Training Programmes for Professional Psychiatrists take a leaf out of the training of Catholic Priests? UNQUOTE Gerald Fernandes The talks and seminars on spirituality that are held in some hospitals today are simply to sensitize health workers to the religious beliefs of an increasingly diverse patient population, because of such ethical and legal issues as end of life decisions. The spiritual counseling services, if any, in these hospitals are provided, not by psychiatrists and physicians, but by real priests on the request of the patient or his/her relatives. The drive to hold talks on spirituality in medical institutions is in many cases dictated by political considerations because religion has become an integral part of political ideologies today in the east as well as west, and also because big donors who support hospital and medical school endowments like to give to religious causes. In people who are religious, religious rituals and spiritual techniques may have a modest beneficial effect on general health and psycho-social wellbeing, but they do not cure any serious illness. As far as the old prescientific ideas such as the various forms of psychotherapy are concerned, like spiritualism, they are now recognized to be fanciful speculations with little or no physical evidence supporting their therapeutic use. Psychiatry has progressed a great deal since the time of the old Austrian, Swiss and American clinicians of the early 20th century. Both Psychology and Psychiatry are now slowly, but finally, becoming real sciences in response to the phenomenal new discoveries of neuroscience. We are finding out that there is no rational or empirical basis for disembodied souls, past lives and afterlives. That was all empty speculation, devoid of any real physical evidence. We now know that everything about your mind and mine is a product of the physical processes within our brain. Please let me know if you would like to educate yourself about these scientific findings. Cheers, Santosh --- On Sun, 8/7/11, Gerald Fernandes cdoger...@yahoo.co.in wrote: Dear Santosh, The connection between Spirituality and Psychotherapy is so well accepted in scientific literature published by different researchers in different parts of the world by different religious inclinations, that it does not require anecdotes in Newspapers to draw sweeping or weeping conclusions. Leave alone psychotherapy, the Harvard School of Medicine through its Dept. of Continuing Medical Education conducts programmes on SPIRITUALITY AND HEALING IN MEDICINE and this programme has been accredited by the

Re: [Goanet] RE (Santosh Helekar): Part I II:The Mental State of Mental Health Professionals: Some Peer-Reviewed Data.
PART I Dear Santosh, You appear to carry a chip (or is it a log) on your shoulder against the wordCatholic and/or the Catholic religion.(quite similar to a psychiatric illness called misogyny-- an illness afflicting human persons who hate of all persons--- WOMEN) This is clearly apparent from your replies.I have not said that Catholic priests are immune to murders and suicides as you claim I have done. You are trying to misrepresent my post, therefore I am constrained to resoundingly assert-- with Charity-- that this part is your interpretation arising from the MUSCLE that lies between your two ears, not an evolved human brain .If you were to peruse my post carefully you would notice that I have referred to spirituality not religion. Spirituality could be based on Hindu,Islamic,Christian, Buddhist, Jain, Zorastarian,Shintaoism or any other practice that provides solace to the human person. Are the Vedas, Ramayana, Mahabharata, Bible, Koran , or other literature like that of Shakespeare, Kalidas, etc, etc peer-reviewed or peer reviewable? The aim of discussion is to ELUCIDATE NOT OBSCURE. The bogey of peer-review is either misunderstood or intentionally misconstrued to create a smokescreen. According to my understanding the word spirituality encompasses all matters relating to the psyche ,and which psyche is not material. Is it any wonder that Psychiatry refers to psych ? There is no point in you being obstinate and cussed in your approach, as I am looking forward for you to prove, that the starting point of Science is NOT based on faith. How else can science proceed without believing implicitly in the predictability of nature (even as to morphology of animals/humans) and even say that all development of embryos proceeds along a certain pattern. Is asserting that not unscientific, since future outcomes are predicted on a MINISCULE sample size? What about your scientific temper and method relating to representative sample size? But for faith in yourself you cannot call yourself normal or abnormal. To paraphrase what an enlightened person said I might not agree with what you say, but I will be ready unto death to defend your right to say it. There is enough material available to meet your silly example, but I shall not do so as I have no intention to match you in the ridiculous. On a parting note though I would request you to read medical literature available on the role of meditation in lowering/reducing hypertension. Or perhaps you would like to reply that meditation is not a spiritual practice? Other books you may like to refer to are Man's Search for Meaning by a medical Dr. Viktor Frankl, a psychiatrist who survived the Nazi Prison Camps, who is regarded as the Founder of Logotherapy. You may also like to read about the work of a medical Dr. Hess ,another Psychiatrist who uses regressional therapy to heal and bring to surface past lives experience since he believes in the Hindu/Buddhist theory of transmigration of the soul. Would you still like to deny the role of Spirituality in Psychiatry. Obviously, you are free to choose your own frame of reference. With every good wish, Gerry PART II Dear Santosh, Since you both insist and persist that you need empirical evidence please find copied two primary articles on Spirituality and Psychiatry and Physiology. There is a surfeit of data. Will endeavour to forward only that which immediately fit the hat. As to the Jesuit part , it is contained in a text-book on Counselling written by Joachim Fuster. S. J. Phd.The origin, role of Spirituality and Religion in Psychiatric illnesses was also examined by the late Bishop Fulton Sheen (holding a doctorate in Philosophy another doctorate in Theology) Since these sources to my personal knowledge are definitely Catholic in origin, I have not included them so as to spare you the pain and effort ,as also because these would be worthless trash in your eyes. Most of the other researchers are Christian in origin except some who are Atheists/Socialists/Communists by conviction. The success of the Alcoholic Anonymous (AA) methodology which is open to all irrespective of religious affiliation, has spawned treatments for human beings irrespective of religious non-belief/belief, for other addictive conditions related to Overeating,Drug Abuse,Nymphomania,Satyrism etc etc. Will you wake up atleast now and smell the coffee? Do feel free to seek elucidation, if you deem it to be neccessary.
