Shantaram Naik condoles the death of Prof Verossimo Coutinho

Mr Shantaram Naik M.P. in a statement issued from New Delhi has said
that with the sad demise of Prof Verossimo Coutinho, Goa has lost a
great patriot, philosopher and thinker.

Mr Naik said his service in the memory of those great Gaoncars of
Cuncolim who laid their lives fighting against Portuguese oppressors,
will never be forgotten by the people of AVC (Assolna, Velhim, Cuncolim).

In fact, Prof Coutinho, who was initially recognized and a known figure
in AVC, eventually became a well known figure in the entire State, Mr
Naik said.

The only way we can pay tribute to this great man is by seeing to it
that the Cuncolim Revolt of Independence is recognized by the Goa
Government and eventually by the country, and further, by ensuring that
the history of the Cuncolim revolt is included in the school text books,
Mr Naik said.

Jason,
I think you hit the nail on the head here.

The problem Goa and Goans have, is a corrupt government. The very same Govt
sponsors these conventions.

This is akin to Col. Qaddafi sponsoring a convention in London for the Libyans

[Goanet] From The Cradle of Konkani History -7

2011-08-08 Thread Fausto Dcosta

From the cradle of Konkani History_7
This is the seventh installment of our serialization of the biographical
sketches of those meritorious veterans, who have been deliberately or
otherwise denied a place in the book of History of Konkani in spite of
having made an honest contribution in the field of Konkani. We appeal to
our readers to point out any lacunae that might have crept in our account of
these veterans so that it could be corrected as well as invite the readers
to send any further inputs so as to update the information. We would also be
much obliged if any photographs of these revered personalities were handed
over to us which could be published along with the acknowledgement of the
person supplying the same. (F. C.)
In this installment let me briefly recount the contribution to Konkani
literature in Roman script of two Mumbai Goans, Oslando de Souza and the
late Manuel Alphonso. They are music wizards who also enriched the
repertoire of Konkani folk songs.

Oslando de Souza 21.09.1930 -

Hailing from the Ararim ward of Saligao in Bardez, Oslando de Souza has made
a considerable contribution to Konkani music. He has showcased the
traditional folk songs Mando and Dulpod as well as humorous songs which he
sang and recorded on cassettes and Compact Discs. They will forever remain
as evidence of his great work.

Oslando recorded his first presentation, 'Poilo Pavs' on HMV in 1971. The
Mando 'Poilo Pavs' was his original composition which became very popular.
Then in 1975 he presented his second work again on HMV. This bore the title
"New Konkani Hits" and included numbers which he had himself composed and
set to music.

Then came the era of audio cassettes. Between 1978 and 1991, he produced
four cassettes of Mando-Dulpod, folk songs and traditional Konkani songs:
'Soul of Goa' (1978), 'Goa Meu amor' (1981), 'Boas Festas' (1984) and
'Nostalgia' (1991). "Boas Festas" contains the traditional Goan 'Alvorada'.
All these cassettes are now presented in the CD format as well. The
specialty of all these songs is that Oslando has taken immense pains to
present them in their traditional style.
Apart from recording, Oslando presented several programmes of Konkani folk
songs on All India Radio, Mumbai. Together with his orchestra 'Oslando & His
Folklorists' he participated in such programmes as "All-India Folk Music
Radio Festival" and "All-Asia Folk Music Radio Festival". His group has
also presented several programmes of folk songs and folk dances on Mumbai
Doordarshan. Oslando's most memorable TV show was the special presentation
of "the Pick of the Week", a programme beamed by Doordarshan on 22nd
December, 1986 exhibiting the artistic revival of the social graces and
charm of the famous Goan Mando dance - performed with period costumes
exactly as it was once danced by the Goan landed aristocracy some 100 years
ago!

Oslando, with his orchesrtra, has presented some live programmes on the
Mumbai stage and contributed to Western music as a choral singer and as a
conductor. He is best known for his unrivalled male-voice singing quartet
'The Minstrels'- which he led with distinction for over three decades! As
an English pop singer, he has presented the music cassettes, 'Family Fiesta'
and 'Christmas Fever'.

Recently, Oslando has brought out a 336 page Music book in English, 'The
Christian Goan Konkani Folk & Art Songs (A New Perspective)'. This book is
divided into three parts: Comprehensive information about the Music of Goan
Catholics, several Mando and Dulpods together with their music scores and
some 16 songs and hymns composed by himself together with their music
scores.

Manuel Alphonso: 1904 - 1995

Manuel Alphonso alias M. Alphonso hailed from Seraulim, Salcete. He was
born at his maternal house in Chandor in 1904. His initial schooling was at
Seraulim parish school where he also learnt the solfejo and violin.
In 1919 he proceeded to Madras (now Chennai) where he began to play for
movies. That was the age of silent movies. The movies were accompanied by
musical scores which were to be played by musicians during the shows. The
music was very difficult to play as it required the musician to be fully
conversant and adept with the staff notation. Manuel, having the necessary
acumen, became an expert in playing such music. Later he shifted to Mumbai
and was playing for silent movies at the Capitol Cinema. After which he
played for the "Bombay Symphony Orchestra". But he lost this job when he
had to go to Goa for some urgent work. Upon his return to Mumbai, he served
as the Choir Master of Holy Cross Church, Kurla.

By this time there was a boom in the Film Industry in Mumbai. Consequently,
he entered the Hindi Film Music circle. He contributed music arrangements
to some Hindi movies, although his name did not appear on the screen.

He was the Music Director of the Konkani Films "Sukhachem Sopon" and

Engineer wants his child to become engineer..

BUT a teacher also wants his child to become one of them..

Nobody wants to become a teacher BY CHOICE"

Very sad but that's the truth.!!!

The dinner guests were sitting around the table discussing
life.

One man, a CEO, decided to explain the problem with
education. He argued,

"What's a kid going to learn from someone who decided
his best option in life was to become a teacher?"

To stress his point he said to another guest; "You're a
teacher, Bonnie. Be honest. What
do you make?"

Teacher Bonnie, who had a reputation for honesty and
frankness replied: "You want to know what I make?"

(She paused for a second, then began...)

"Well, I make kids work harder than they ever thought
they could.

I make a C+ feel like the Congressional Medal of Honor
winner.

I make kids sit through 40 minutes of class time when their
parents can't

Make them sit for 5 min. without an I Pod, Game Cube or
movie rental.

You want to know what I make?

(She paused again and looked at each and every person at the
table)

I make kids wonder.

I make them question.

I make them apologize and mean it.

I make them have respect and take responsibility for their
actions.

I teach them how to write and then I make them write.

Keyboarding isn't everything.

I make them read, read, read.

I make them show all their work in math.

They use their God given brain, not the man-made calculator.

I make my students from other countries learn everything
they need

To know about English while preserving their unique cultural
identity.

I make my classroom a place where all my students feel safe.

Finally, I make them understand that if they use the gifts
they were given, work hard, and follow their hearts, they can succeed in life

( Bonnie paused one last time and then continued.)

Then, when people try to judge me by what I make, with me knowing
money isn't everything, I can hold my head up high and pay no attention because
they are ignorant. You want to know what I make?

I MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN ALL YOUR LIVES, EDUCATING KIDS AND
PREPARING THEM TO BECOME CEO's, AND DOCTORS AND ENGINEERS..

What do you make Mr. CEO?

His jaw dropped; he went silent.

[Goanet] inside/out book review

2011-08-08 Thread dale luis menezes
WORLD CLASS ‘INSIDE/OUT’

By

DALE LUIS MENEZES

Inside/Out: New Writings from Goa, edited by Helene Derkin Menezes and José
Lourenço, when released a few months back, did grab a lot of headlines. Much of
the publicity was due to the inclusion of an essay by the noted novelist and
partly Goa-resident, Amitav Ghosh. According to an internet forum message, the
book did well, as immediately after its launch, nearly 650 copies were sold.
When a celebrity writer of the stature of Amitav Ghosh is associated with a
book that is published from a place more known for matters and things other
than literary, there is always a fear that the writings of the other
contributors may not receive the attention they deserve. But, I can assure
you, nothing of that sort has happened here.

All the writers in this anthology are members of a diverse and vibrant group
called the Goa Writers, launched in 2005. All were given a very vague and
abstract theme: Inside Out, which they had to interpret in their own way. The
result: a very beautiful and immensely satisfying collection of writings that
we can all be very proud of.

Like any good anthology, this book has an abundance of short stories, poems,
memoirs, photographs and essays. Amongst them, Walking as Art is a free verse
poem by Isabel de Santa Rita Vas which reminded me of Ogden Nash who is known
for his free verse poetry. Isabel, like Nash, writes with a lot of wit and
humour and at the same time gives us much to munch over. I am not someone who
enjoys poetry but Isabel’s keen eye and deft words surely made me realize that
walking is not just a simple act. There is a philosophy about walking and I
found this extremely amazing. Similarly, Mario Coelho’s poem, written for
children and peppered with lively and amazing characters, is also a treat to
read.

The contributors in this book are Goans, expat Goans, non-Goans or foreigners.
Most of them, after spending a childhood or sometime outside Goa have now made
Goa their home. So, for many of these contributors, the interpretation of the
abovementioned theme narrows down to writing about their memories or
experiences in the land that they were formerly living in.

There is an interesting essay penned by Vidhyadhar Gadgil. He first came to Goa
as a teen along with a few friends and confesses to drinking as if there was no
tomorrow during that particular holiday. Gadgil was domiciled in Goa before
moving to Kathmandu. He discusses the dynamics of who is an ‘insider’ and who
is an ‘outsider’. I find this interesting because Gadgil is giving a call to
all Bhailes to come under an organization called Bhailyancho Saad (The Voice of
the Outsiders) and gives them the slogan: Garv se kaho hum ghanti hain. On one
hand he makes a case for the ‘outsiders’ while on the other hand he confesses
to calling (not loudly) some bunch of smelly labourers on a bus “Bloody
ghantis”, thus taking pleasure in ethnic and class superiority that only
‘insiders’ can enjoy (according to him). Such a statement, I guess, reveals
that not all non-native people can come under the all-encompassing identity of
‘Outsiders’. There is definitely a dif
ference amongst various ‘outsiders’ and a hierarchy by which the natives and
the affluent and educated ‘outsiders’ try to keep the poor and powerless
‘outsiders’ at the lowest levels of the access-to-valued-resources chain.

As a student of history, I always look forward to personal stories: the stories
that our parents and grandparents tell us and which now the children put on
paper. Veena Gomes-Patwardhan’s Granny’s Goa does exactly that. She tells us
how her great grand-parents would travel all the way to Caranzalem so as to run
a bakery there. Fatima da Silva Gracias tells a personal story as she tries to
find out some facts about an old family photograph in The Unresolved Mystery of
a Family Portrait.

Aimee Ginsburg’s One Still Here is an interesting tale of three Jewish women:
herself, her grandmother and Catarina da Orta, the sister of Garcia da Orta who
was burned at the stake, all linked together in different times and spaces.

Amitav Ghosh has written a small essay called Anthony Vaz. Anthony Vaz, we are
told, had compiled a dictionary of nautical terms that would help the English
officers to communicate with the native sailors. Ghosh writes about the
importance of preserving such dictionaries, “With the vanishing of wind-powered
merchant vessels, this entire apparatus (of words as well as things) has more
or less disappeared from the face of the earth. This is precisely the values of
books like Vaz’s: they give us a glimpse of a way of life that is now extinct.
…I am convinced that there are many yet undiscovered manuscripts languishing in
Goan houses. Let us hope that they will soon come to light.”

I am a big fan of the writings of Amitav Ghosh. Reading his many books and
essays, I am always

Acid Attack on Tiatrist Brian Fernandes?

Well,  to start with, let me clarify that the Victim is not the same as our
 popular Com. Brian Fernandes.

There was a huge confusion or mix-up on the subject matter.
I was surprised to get number of queries on this and even more surprised to
personally witness the situation at Kala Academy tiatr ‘ Public’ this evening
8/8/11.
Some even phoned Peter de Benaulim,  the father of Com. Brian.

As for me, I found out (through various news reports ) ...

different newspapers different reportings
News was all over the net channels etc

News papers should keep us updated possibly with the Victim's pic
and to clear up the confusion caused ..

Which Goan Indian citizen does not like the agenda of the Indian state? It
looks like Jason Keith wanted only his agenda, whatever it is, and only his

someone say that he was impartial? That must be the joke of the day on Goanet.

[Goanet] Goa: Education in corruption and apathy

2011-08-08 Thread Cip Fernandes
Education in corruption and apathy

Poor quality maintenance work and a dilapidated building are giving a nightmare
to students, not their syllabus. The inundated classrooms and corridors are a
telling sign of quality of education in Goa. Building schools is one aspect in
the promotion of literacy, but making those structures safe and amenable to
pursue education is quite another task altogether. In once such case, the
condition of the Government High School (GHS) at Kalay-Sanguem has deteriorated
to such an extent that almost all classrooms are submerged and students are
forced to study in water-logged classrooms. Parents of students studying at the
GHS Kalay have bitterly complained about the poor condition of the school
building. “The school building, constructed some 30 years ago to all classrooms
and corridor,” complained a parent. [H]

Liquor sale hit as devout observe Shravan (for Hindus), Ramzan (for Muslims)

Shravan, the auspicious month according to Hindu calendar, is a time for people
to take a break from the hectic habits of normal day-to-day life. Coming just
before the Ganesh Chaturthi, this month-long period sees people from the
majority community generally opting to strictly adhere to a vegetarian diet and
cut out their consumption of liquor. However, a visit to a few outlets serving
the liquid has shown a mixed response to this normal practice. “Liquor business
has certainly gone down by almost 30 to 40 per cent. On the whole, generally
the business has gone down,” says Mr Barnabe Sapeco, owner of a popular
restaurant in the city ‘Sagar’. “Lots of people have stopped eating non
vegetarian foods and drinks.” [NT]

[Goanet] Global Goans Convention - clarification

2011-08-08 Thread Jason Keith Fernandes
Dear All,

In my last response to Gabe Menezes, I wrote...

' Frankly, there was much in the organisation of the event that upset me.
Badly organized at least on the first two days...'

I deeply regret the phrasing given that it suggests that the entire
Convention was badly organized. This phrasing does deep disservice to the
organizers and the actually decent way in which the Convention was carried
out.

If anything, I was referring to the manner in which the time-management and
interactions with the audience were carried out. I continue to be somewhat
upset by this. Having said this however, I have to confess that I am holding
it to standards that are not necessarily universal, though I may see them as
important.

Mea Maxima Culpa.
Forgive me.

I especially put out this apology, given that I was deeply touched by the
hospitality that was afforded by the members of the GOA, that was
spontaneous and unstinting, and would hate that they felt dismissed by my
badly phrased comments.

[Goanet] Gabe's response to 'Reflections after the Global Goans Convention

2011-08-08 Thread Jason Keith Fernandes
Dear Gabe,

Please find my responses, perhaps woefully inadequate, below...

GABE RESPONSE: So what is your take? was it used wisely and carefully?

Jason response: Frankly, there was much in the organisation of the event
that upset me. Badly organized at least on the first two days, and way too
much kowtowing to the representative of the Indian State (i.e. Mr. E.
Faleiro), especially by a member of the British Govt. (i.e. a local
counsellor). I still fail to understand why. As in, the power equations that
would allow for this to happen, just do not appear to me. Am stumped on that
front.

Was it used wisely and carefully? If after all the effort the local
organising committee put in (and clearly it was much), they are still
accused of exclusion, allowing the same old INdian nationalist rhetoric to
play out, then I think their efforts were to a large part misappropriated,
which is sad.

GABE RESPONSE: I think the NRI Minister has stated on more than one occasion
that the aim of these Conventions is to bridge the gap between
NRGs and Goa. That Carmen Miranda was given time talk to air her grievances
w.r.t.rampant mining is on the plus side; even though it detracts from what
the Conventions main aim is.

Jason response: There are two partners in any GGC, the Commission
(representing the INdian State) and the local organising committee. Should
there not be a parity between partners? No one partner can dictate terms
unilaterally. One partner may have one aim, the rest of us, must try to
supplement the contents of what the aims of the GGC will be. That was the
point of my post.

GABE COMMENT: I know you are being impartial but it would have been nice
to

> have declared that you were one of the panelists on the recently concluded
> Convention. Did you pay all your expenses or were you sponsored?
>
>
Jason response: The fact that I was a panelist Gabe, was obvious to all on
Goanet and the world. I could indicate whether I was sponsored or not, which
I will. Before I indicate this however, I should point out, that I write
these posts for the newspaper, and am often constrained for space. Not every
detail gets to print. I know its important, but I did not find the fact of
my being sponsored or not relevant to the arguments I was making. I did
however know that the issue would get raised.

My trip to and from the UK was sponsored by the local organizing committee,
not by the Commission for NRI Affairs. I took care of my accommodation while
in the UK, which was not the case for those speakers who had been sponsored
by the Commission.

Finally, I am glad you suggest that I am being impartial. i am indeed trying
to be impartial. More importantly however, I am trying to see if there is a
way for us not to throw out the baby with the bathwater. The agenda of the
Indian State exists, whether we like it or not. The question is, when we are
called to be partners in this project, can be ensure that it accomodates a
wider agenda, setting off unintended consequences?

Stay well,

thank you for your questions.

RESPONSE: After taking Communion we kneel and remain so until after the host
Chalice is returned to the tabernacle - at least this is what we were taught
in Nairobi, Kenya.

I was informed that the Church in Medieval times was not only a place of
Worship but a place of gathering where matters were discussed and ideas
exchanged. We are somewhat blessed in the U.K. that although we have falling
numbers of Church goers, the Catholics seems to be holding up pretty well!

In Goa it seems to me that people attend Church services and as soon as they
come out they have no reservations about ethics or proper conduct - in fact
on the way to Church they will drop their garbage in front of your house!

[Goanet] GOAiNITIATIVES: Yogita's Plans for Learning Winter Kitchen Gardening in Goa

2011-08-08 Thread Frederick Noronha
-- Forwarded message --
From: Yogita Mehra
Date: 8 August 2011 12:10

Hi,

Just wanted to share some of our plans for the coming 2011 winter
season, for those that may be interested in joining...

Our interactions with people involved in our programs over the last
year, have given us the sense that:

People are inspired and really want to do their own vegetable gardens
But, many who start out and try this face a steep learning curve and
several types of demoralising difficulties (especially in early stages
of planting)
Those who are very serious would like to have a deeper and more
detailed learning experience and some amount of mentor-ship/support in
their first season

While several people have had small and substantial success, we've
tried to design a set of learning options that will really and
practically help those who haven't.

These sessions will be held primarily at the ICG Dona Paula (about an
800-1000 sq mt garden) and possibly also at Chorao Island and
Taleigao.

So here is what we can provide Winter Vegetable Gardening Enthusiasts...

For those who are enthusiastic, but haven't an idea how to start, I
would suggest one of our 2-hour “Show and Tell” session (not much
technical stuff, just the bare basics)

For those who'd like to have more detailed learning sessions, the 4
hour “Hands On” sessions will be in ideal initiation

[Goanet] [JudeSundayReflections] 20th Sunday of the Year

2011-08-08 Thread Jude Botelho
7-Aug-2011

Dear Friend,

Whether we admit it or not we all live in our own little world, we tend to
exclude others, while at the same time desiring to be included in exclusive
groups. We think in terms of 'we' and 'they', we act on our prejudices. We are
the 'good guys' and they are the bad ones! Obviously, we believe that God is on
our side and not with them! Yet God is a God for all, with all, and is ever
inclusive. He has no favourites for all his favoured ones! Have a joyful
weekend finding God among all peoples!   Fr. Jude

Sunday Reflections: Twentieth Sunday-"Breaking down barriers, building
bridges!" 14-Aug-2011
Isaiah 56: 1, 6-7            Romans 11: 13-15, 29-32            Matthew 15:
21-28

In today's first reading from Isaiah, the prophet is writing to the Jews of his
time, who were loosing some of their enthusiasm after their return from exile.
They were becoming more and more prejudicial towards others. They considered
themselves as the privileged ones and all the rest had to be excluded. Instead
of building bridges of friendship they were erecting walls of prejudice as
barriers to exclude others. Isaiah confronted his people's closed attitude and
welcomed every one. He called God's house a house of prayer for all peoples.
"The foreigners who join themselves to the Lord, .. them I will bring to my
holy mountain and make joyful in my house of prayer, for my house will be
called a house of prayer for all peoples.

All are Welcome!
One day, it seems, a certain curious person in heaven asked St. Peter "How many
Hindus are in heaven?" Peter replied: "No Hindus". Then he asked: "How many
Muslims?" "Not even one," replied Peter. The man was surprised. He said: "Oh,
then, there are only Christians in heaven?" "No, there are no Christians in
heaven either," replied Peter. "How Many Catholics?" "No, Catholics either."
Then St. Peter said, "Heaven is not meant for any particular group of people.
Here, there is no distinction between Hindus, Muslims or Christians for all are
welcome in heaven." What else could St. Peter have said? Did not God tell his
chosen people, referring to the temple in Jerusalem which was a symbol of
heaven for them; "My house shall be called a house of prayer for all peoples."
Vima Dasan in 'His Word Lives'

In the Gospel we see Jesus withdrawing to the region of Tyre and Sidon to be
away from the public gaze, to spend some quiet time with his disciples. But a
woman who is from this 'pagan' area, desperate because her daughter is
seriously ill, takes the chance of coming to this stranger, Jesus, for help.
"Have pity on me, Lord, Son of David! My daughter is tormented by a demon." The
response of Jesus seems to be rather strange; he did not say a word to her.
When Jesus does speak to her he rejects her plea. "I was sent only to the lost
sheep of the house of Israel." Even this rebuff does not dissuade the woman.
She will not give up. "Lord, please help me." Again she meets with rejection
from Jesus and the words he uses would be enough to take offense. "It is not
right to take the food of children and throw it to the dogs." But the woman,
instead of being offended by Jesus' remark is quick with her repartee: "Please,
Lord, even the dogs eat the scraps that
fall from the table of their masters." At this persistence Jesus is greatly
touched. Her faith is so strong that indifference, rejection and apparent
ridicule will not swerve her from her need to have her daughter cured by Jesus.
"O woman, great is your faith! Let it be done as you wish." The woman's
daughter was healed at that very moment, thanks to her loving concern for her
daughter and her faith that would not give in.

Reaching Beyond
At all times and in most places there are people who find themselves on the
edge, who do not quite belong, who do not get their share, who are deprived and
in need. In our time, there are people like the homeless, the handicapped, the
travellers, the uneducated are often marginalised. In Christ's time, the
Canaanites were one of the marginalised groupings. As descendants of a pagan
tribe, they were utterly despised by the Jews. So when a Caananite woman came
to the true Jew, Christ, to heal her daughter, she knew that she was reaching
across the great divide. The reception she got at first did not encourage her
but she persevered. Somehow, she knew that he cared for her sick child. As we
read in today's gospel, her trust was not misplaced and Christ cared for her
daughter. In our time, the brave reach out for justice for the marginalised.
They hope that under the current malaise of greed and grasping there is a
Christ like generosity. May their courage
on behalf of the needy, and their trust in the better off, always evoke a
response worthy of followers of Christ.
