[Goanet] Fighting Corruption begins by reporting Corruption

On this thread, an article titled "Does Anna's Civil Society Represent the
Nation?" by Madhu Chandra was posted on Goanet. Perhaps the author's main
point can be summarized in the last para of the article, namely: "Therefore,
I reserve my rights to refrain from this civil society, if Team Anna remains
silent spectator on issues of caste, communalism, rights of minorities and
the rise of fascism."

I think the society handles multiple issues at any one time. Some people
take one issue, while others will take up another. This does not mean that
if one takes up a particular issue, he should be asked to take other issues
simultaneously. If this is the criteria, then NO issue will be tackled.

Corruption is an issue on which the people are extremely agitated more
because of surfacing scams after scams. This does not mean that it is the
ONLY issue that agitates the society.

Best regards,

U. G. Barad

My comments:

There is undeclared Apartheid in India.
While the scheduled caste privileges were extended to Sikh dalits in
1956 and Buddhist dalits in 1990, they have been denied to Muslim and
Christian dalits, which account for nearly two-thirds of the 27
million Christians in India. Christians account for 2.3% of India’s
1.2 billion people. So it is justifiable that even this Undeclared
Apartheid should go along with all types of corruption.

People sometimes voluntarily bribe to get the work done, to avoid
inconvenience. For example, I will pay an official handsomely just to
approve what ever my application is. I will readily pay Rs.100/- to a
traffic cop to avoid a ticket that will result in visit to the traffic
court later on (could be many visits to the court!)

How corruption can be avoided ?

Below are some examples: (the first one, computerization that I prefer)

E-governance is key to ridding corruption. Once everything becomes
online, there will be little opportunity for corruption. A perfect
example is that of railway tickets.

Bribery, or "graft", is a fact of life for more or less everybody in
India. Most importantly, people must be self disciplined so that
bribery stops. There are no readymade answers but there has to be
collective consciousness of what is good and bad. The head of the
department must be made responsible if bribery has taken place in his
department.

Support for Hazare is particularly strong among those who have
benefited most from India's recent breakneck economic development but
are frustrated by a largely unreformed public sector that delivers
poor and haphazard services.

Bureaucratic and petty corruption is extreme in India.

Others say those who pay the bribes are to blame too. One supreme
court lawyer who refused demands for commissions in return for
sanctioning payment for work he had done for the government, said
giving in to corruption could be down to "deep powerlessness" or
simply a "I just want to get on with my day" type of attitude. "As
Indians we see corruption as something that permeates our lives, like
air pollution, but we need to think much more carefully about it," he
said.

Raghu Thoniparambil, who runs the website ipaidabribe.com, pointed out
that corruption in the private sector was just as prevalent. "All
these protests are very inspiring but will people really change? I
don't know," he said.

Less ambitious and spectacular measures could have more impact than
the ombudsman office Hazare and his followers want to create,
Thoniparambil argues.

Therefore, moral responsibility, a sense of national duty should
prevail over the temptation to demand bribe.

MD.

George, I won't be as pessimistic as you. Over my years of interaction, I've
come to believe that there are an amazing number of people doing fascinating
work across the Goa/Goan world -- in Goa, in the diaspora.

But you need to search hard to find these gems. Often they get
underrecognised and ignored, because our society is not used to
acknowledging its own and offering praise.

We do have certain problems, agreed. The main of which, I think, is that we
had it too easy for too long. That has brought in affluenza and arrogance.
If we had to struggle some more for what we got, then we might have been a
better people. (We have also lost our ability to smile, and take ourselves
far too seriously.) FN

PS: What do the others see as the problems the Goa/Goan community faces?

[Goanet] ADVOCATE GENERAL OF GOA FIASCO

2011-08-20 Thread Aires Rodrigues
The Drafting committee of the Indian Constitution headed by Dr. B.R.
Ambedkar had wide deliberations pertaining to the appointment of
Advocate General. Those debates reveal that it was contemplated that
the appointment and the tenure of the Advocate General should not be
dependant on the vagaries of party politics.

In order to ensure the decorum of the office, it was decided by the
constitutional committee that the Advocate General should not indulge
in private practice. Further, the Advocate General had to be a lawyer
of eminence and his office a bureau of legal advice with the sole duty
and function to advise the Government. Paramount among the duties to
establish and maintain a high level of competency in the legislative
and executive structure of the Government. It was also envisaged that
the Advocate General should appear only in crucial policy related
matters and not in all cases just for the sake of remuneration.

The Constitution of India mandates that a Governor shall appoint as
Advocate General a person who is qualified to be appointed as a High
Court Judge. Is the present Advocate General of Goa qualified to be a
High Court judge? This is a question Mr. Subodh Kantak has to ask
himself though the answer is obvious to all. Chief Minister Digambar
Kamat has also a lot to explain for having allowed the high
constitutional post of Advocate General to blatantly and profusely
bleed the State exchequer. “Satyameva Jayate”, the national motto of
India does not seem to prevail. I will comment no further as the
people of Goa are better judges.

Total population of Goans in Canada is slightly less than 40,000, of whom
90% are established in Toronto and the other 10% being mainly in Montreal
and Vancouver although there are scatterings in Calgary, Edmonton, Winnipeg,
and Halifax.

Toronto Goan population origins comprise as follows:
20 % East Africa connection
10 % Pakistan connection
3 % European (Portugal and African colonies) connection
67 % India including via Persian Gulf connection

Comment:

Furthermore, the second generation has totally adapted to the Canadian
culture and do not see any connection with India except interaction
with fellow Canadians of Indian origin. Some can also speak the
English in native Indian accent as well as Canadian as per situation
requires.

What George has said below is very close to the truth. But I also want to state
the positive side of Goans:

8. Indian citizen Goans who believe and accept that they are Indians: 14,57,623
Indian citizen Goans who believe they are non-Indians: 100
Indian citizen Goans who are anti-Indian: 15
Indian citizen Goans who believe they are Portuguese: 5

Cheers,

[Goanet] The Don Bosco Relic explained

2011-08-20 Thread Bosco D

The Relic

The relics of Don Bosco have been recomposed from the urn that contained
his remains since 1929 when the body was exhumed for his beatification
and canonization. The bones and tissues of the right hand and arm have
been taken and placed within a wax replica of St. John Bosco’s body,
which in turn is enclosed in a large urn.

The urn was constructed specially for this pilgrimage. It is composed of
a large glass box in which the wax replica is placed, and easily viewed.
The box is mounted atop a large wood and metal cart. Among the urn’s
decorations are the words, “Da mihi animas, ceatera tolle,” which
translates to, “Give me souls, take away the rest,” one of Don Bosco’s
many quotes that guided his ministry from its earliest stages through
today. Images of young faces also surround the urn, as well as maps
showing where the Salesian Family is present today. Finally, the years
1815 and 2015 are placed near the base, serving as a reminder of the
purpose of this Relic Pilgrimage: in 2015, the Salesian Family, and the
Church as a whole, will celebrate the 200th Anniversary of Don Bosco’s
birth in 1815.

RESPONSE: For what it's worth I empathise! We have a lot of shysters, of
incredulous disposition here in London. For instance a safe goes missing,
T.V. costing £500 pounds (which I donated) in the eighties as well - Police
deem no break in - an inside job. The short of the matter, no investigation
of sorts; yet the man is able to put himself up to investigate others! This
man talks about holier than thou stuff - he is afraid to come out in the
open about his sexuality. Now since he believes in God Almighty, how will be
be judged?

You keep up the good fight - no one is above the Law - except if they have
Diplomatic immunity like the Pope!

A secessionist movement against a sovereign state is by definition a political
movement. Please read the following paper entitled, "The Political Economy of
Secession" from Oxford University:

http://users.ox.ac.uk/~ball0144/self-det.pdf

All secessionist organizations are therefore political organizations. Most of
them see themselves as political parties, even though their political
expression may have been legally banned by their respective national
governments, e.g. in the case of the Portuguese secessionist political
organizations that are banned by Portugal today. In practice, most
secessionists of today who are militating against sovereign representative
democracies are fanatical extremists, not enjoying the support of the majority
of the people, including their own communities and constituencies. However,
only a small number of them are terrorists.

Please note that nearly all secessionist organizations in India have been
recognized as terrorist, insurgent or extremist organizations by national and
international law enforcement agencies. This is true of the list that I had
provided, and also of the organization mentioned in Falcao's quote below,

[Goanet] Coprruption boundaries are beyond parties

2011-08-20 Thread Nelson Lopes
Corruption boundaries are beyond Parties
It is unfortunate that the most upright P.M.of free India is to bear
the brunt of barrage. It is equally sad that the Congress party is
applying it personally, as if it is only defender of corruption During
the short NDA regime it was not free of corruption or corrupt
practices Every one whether in the ruling dispensation or the
opposition have their fare share of involvement in some way of the
other. True the Congress party has been ruling the country for the
longest period. It appears that the Congress party is thinking of
perpetuating their rule for ever The attack is presumed by them to be
directly pointing at them and that is the reason of their fierce and
unbridled attack blinded by arrogance Their theories are not
practical to presume the surge of support for the cause . The fight is
against the monumental, hydra headed, corruption .but the Congress
arrogates to itself ,unnecessarily as being the target Any state that
is not ruled by the Congress has many skeletons of corruption that
have tumbled out Many an individual politicians or other wise have
stooped to lowest levels to enrich themselves at the cost of larger
interests. Naturally such incidents portray and reflect the image of
the institution one belongs The laws are such that favour these
culprits and justice is slow and winding, Then there are wasted
interests to protect them for a consideration The agony is that the
cancer of corruption has percolated to the lowest level, "head to the
toe" It has an crushing effect on all sections of the society,
specially the poor There is no will to recognise and worst still to
address the issue head on It has been accepted as normal and way of
life The greatest offenders have become celebrities and adored for
their ill gotten, tainted contributions The parties are not unified
to deal with the problem, again because they do not want to destroy
their turn Look at how elections are won and an honest candidate does
not stand an inch of chance Hence elections are the greatest
contributors to corruption There has to be serious thinking on
electoral, police, judicial reforms, tax evasions and criminality in
our society Corruption must not be glorified and justice must be swift
and equitable to nip corruption in the bud. The parties must put the
welfare of the nation above self and the electorate can ensure reduced
corruption by constantly changing the actors who have dug ed in their
feet too long in this profession People have lost faith in the
executive, judiciary and the legislature. they do not show passion and
compassion to the cause and are insensitive and selfish to the core
The popular wave against corruption is the first step towards the
direction of hopeful reforms. The rulers by their arrogance have
alienated from the reality of the people they represent They have
become immune to the sufferings of their people One worthy factor of
change is to constantly bring in new faces ,but it is easier said than
done

reliable. Given the total Swindon population of 180,051 at the latest

Dear Fredrick,

Crawley is a small town  in West Sussex near Gatwick airport
the second largest airport after Heathrow in England.
In fact Gatwick fall under the jurisdiction of Crawley.

At a rough estimate we have about twenty five Goan families
.each with two or three children to each families.
Most or nearly all settled from  East Africa e.g. Kenya Uganda

and few from Tanzania.
We also have a few Goans from Goa who keep a low profile
the only places you might seem them is at the church.

The problem we have is that we are not united

We do not have socials whereby we could mingle and

come to know each other and share our heritage.

FN,

I think that the Govt of India has to concentrate on Indian expats only.
That is those who have gone to foreign countries on a two year
work contract and have to return to India after their work contract
expires. The Indian Govt does need to provide these expats with
all the services they require.

Then there is a second group of Goans/Indians abroad that are not
Indians. These are people who have decided to leave India and take
up the citizenship of another country.

Such people, myself included, should be of no interest to the Indian
Govt. They are related to India only by ethnicity. In countries like
Mauritius, Guyana and Trinidad, half the population is of Indian descent.

These people regard Goa/India they same way Ronald Reagan or

Barrack Obama view Ireland. It is the country their forefathers left
and a nice place to visit as a tourist.

Anna effect: Goa's ministers asked to observe a 'bribe-free day'

Anna Hazare's influence seems to be everywhere. Now, members of a civil
society group in Goa have asked ministers in the Congress-led coalition
government to observe Thursday as a 'bribe-free day' in support of the
veteran Gandhian.

Tired of the many scandals tumbling out of the Goa cabinet's closet and
inspired by Hazare's crusade against corruption, the Village Groups of Goa
(VGG), an umbrella group of several vigilante civil society organisations,
said the "moral spinoffs" of the civil society leader's fight had reached
the state.

"If they cannot be non-corrupt forever, we have asked every cabinet minister
in Goa to at least observe one bribe-free day to show their support for Anna
Hazare," John Pereira, the VGG convenor, said.

"We are telling every minister not to accept bribes or discuss any deals
which can involve kickbacks," Pereira said. He added that the VGG members
would visit the homes of Goa's ministers and silently hold placards in front
of the ministers "thanking them for not accepting bribes on the day".

Goa, in the last few years, has been rocked by repeated corruption in a wide
range of sectors, which includes mining, narcotics, fake currency, excise
and midday meals.

[Goanet] Tony Fernandes the new majority owner of Queens Park Rangers (football) and owner of AirAsia Airlines

2011-08-20 Thread Camillo Fernandes

It may be of interest of Goa netters to know some more details of Tony
Fernandes the successful entrepreneur who was born to an Indian Goan father and
Malacca Portuguese mother and is owner of AirAsia.

Camilo Fernandes

"Tony Fernandes is a Malaysian entrepreneur and the founder of Tune Air Sdn.
Bhd., who introduced the first budget no-frills airline, AirAsia to Malaysians
with the tagline "Now everyone can fly". He has since founded the Tune Group of
companies.

He rose to prominence by turning AirAsia, a failing government-linked
commercial airline, into a highly successful budget airline public-listed
company. Fernandes mortgaged his home and sank his savings to acquire the
AirAsia, comprising two ageing Boeing 737-300 jets and USD$11 million worth
of debts, for 26 US cents and transformed it into an industry player

Born in Kuala Lumpur to an Indian Goan father and Malacca Portuguese mother
Tony Fernandes is the son of the late Stephen Edward Fernandes, and Ena Dorothy
Fernandez. When he was young, he used to follow his mother, a businesswoman, to
Tupperware dealer parties and conventions.

He was educated at Epsom College 1977-83 and then graduated from the London
School of Economics in 1987. He worked very briefly with Virgin Atlantic as an
auditor, subsequently becoming the financial controller for Richard Branson's
Virgin Records in London from 1987 to 1989

Tony was admitted as Associate Member of the Association of Chartered Certified
Accountants (ACCA) in 1991 and became Fellow Member in 1996.

Upon his return to Malaysia, he became the youngest managing director of Warner
Music (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd. Though an accountant, Fernandes is an amateur
guitarist and also has achieved grade 8 piano which is where his musical
inclination lies. He was responsible for revolutionising ethnic music, nasyid
and dangdut, bringing them into the mainstream of contemporary Malaysian music.

He subsequently became the South East Asian regional vice-president for Warner
Music Group from 1992-2001. When Time Warner Inc announced its merger with
America Online Inc., Fernandes left to pursue his dream of starting a budget
no-frills airline. He has now become the new majority owner of Queens Park

happy that I didn't engage in Anna discourse with you too, because, I
would not be sure, now, if you were talking from your heart or expressing
pickings from mine in this what you have put down.

Very well done and excellently put. The root cause of corruption is
everyone of us. We want our things done at any cost and we will go all the
way to succumb to the illegal demands from our representative to solve our
'illegal' problems. There is absolutely no need to pay bribes if one is
'legal'. I am in construction business which is my leisure business to keep
me occupied. And I do not indulge in illegalities. Recently, I have been
made to wait for 2 and half years for my Occupancy certificate because
somebody thought that I was illegal. They learnt their lesson, but it
started on day one, when I was asked for a packet by a TCP petty officer
who came to inspect the barren site of my to be construction in 2006 as a
routine and who thought that I should pay. When he got his answer "I would
pay provided he was willing to sit in the 'can' for a long time", my
troubles started, to ultimately land in the den of 40 chors, the Assembly
including the High Court. And I won hands down. All said and done, most of
these guys around who are now running behind Anna have learnt their bitter
lessons, and I have not parted with a single pie as pacification or bribes.
Anna should see that he is surrounded with such people and not two timers
and publicity seekers. Gullible students should be careful. Corruption is a
cancer. It has to be drastically treated if the body is to survive. And it
is not as easy as Jan Lokpal Bill. The free radicals must be eliminated as
soon as they enter the body. Or else, in years to come, it is terminal
cancer.

Much appreciated, Edwin & Diana. Do maintain your heads on your shoulders,

Jan Lokpal Bill - A Panacea for Corruption...?

Its Palm Sunday for Anna Hazare and his team. The flags are waving, the
cheers resounding and the air is thick with hope and promise. But when the
tide of exhilaration ebbs and history looks back upon this time with a
clarity and objectivity lent by distance, it may well be felt that there
were no heroes in this drama. All the protagonists were culpable and
complicit in some way or the other.

The grand finale of course was all of us, worthy citizens of this great
nation, pouring out into the streets, with our flags, banners and slogans,
holding vibrant protest meetings, gathering outside Tihar jail, all in
support of Anna Hazare's anti corruption campaign. The same people who set
out on pilgrimages to holy places on our MLA and minister's dime, even as
we expect them to support and fund football tournaments, dances, plays,
festivals and feasts, Narkasurs and even family obligations. Where these
politicians are expected to get the money to finance this largesse never
ever seems to cross our minds.

The energy and enthusiasm that we see today is refreshing and encouraging.
But our role in democracy cannot be confined to voting once in five years
and coming out on the streets on emotive issues. It is imperative that we
consistently participate in our democracy by keeping abreast of current
issues, implications of Bills that are to be passed in the Parliament and
Assembly, and most of all engaging with our local MLAs and MPs on an
ongoing basis, so that they understand clearly that they represent the
interests of the nation, the state, and the people who elected them,
rather than their "high command".

 Hi Fred,
Speaking of Goans in the London and Outer London

our Eddie Fernandes(Goan Voice UK), may be the
best to provide you with this info? On the wider U.K. scale, I can't think
of anyone who would have this information. Perhaps Flavio Gracias as
President of the Goan Association(UK)?
As for Village Feast celebrations, Gabe may well be right as far
as Saligao is concerned, but Saligao and Moira were equally
popular in those early days, and who knows, Moira may well have
been a close second or (at the risk of incurring the wrath of Saligaocars),
even the first!

[Goanet] Jan Lokpal Bill - A Panacea for Corruption...?

2011-08-20 Thread Edwin\Diana pinto

Jan Lokpal Bill - A Panacea for Corruption...?

Its Palm Sunday for Anna Hazare and his team. The flags are waving, the
cheers resounding and the air is thick with hope and promise. But when the
tide of exhilaration ebbs and history looks back upon this time with a
clarity and objectivity lent by distance, it may well be felt that there
were no heroes in this drama. All the protagonists were culpable and
complicit in some way or the other.

It started with the UPA II Government, who made it abundantly clear that
harvesting the ideas, skills and talents of different political parties in
the interests of drafting an effective Lokpal Bill came a poor second to
gaining political mileage for themselves. In an undisguised display of
tokenism, a group representing civil society was invited to collaborate in
the drafting process of this Bill. They learnt their lesson soon enough,
when their version was ignored and the government introduced their own
"joke pal" version in Parliament.

This is when the civil society activists decided that enough was enough.
They felt that the government had given them justification to appropriate to
themselves from Parliament the right to make this particular law. Anna
Hazare made his now famous statement that he "has faith in Parliament but
not in Members of Parliament," notwithstanding the fact that it is civil
society itself that elects these worthies into this hallowed institution. If
there are doubts about Parliament's ability to frame our laws, then it is
clear that we need a systemic change even more urgently than a Jan Lokpal
Bill. And needless to say, it may be pertinent to ask ourselves why we are
electing Members of Parliament that we have no faith in time and again.

The battle lines were now drawn as UPA II flexed its muscles and arrested
Anna Hazare in a bid to end his proposed protest fast at Ram Lila grounds,
even before it began.

This was a heaven sent opportunity to opposition parties, who proceeded to
milk the situation for all it was worth. BJP luminaries swung into action in
Parliament and on every TV channel, smirking delightedly as they forcefully
denounced the government's overbearing arrogance. Strangely though, they
neglected to enlighten the nation on where exactly their party stood in
relation to supporting the present Jan Lokpal Bill, or why they did not get
their own version of the Lokpal Bill passed when they ruled the country in
the NDA combine during India's "shining" years, or why Bhikhabhai Jethwa,
father of slain RTI activist Amit Jethwa, had to file a writ petition in the
Gujarat high court on Thursday against the Narendra Modi government's
failure to appoint a Lokayukta.

The Communist parties also muscled in for a piece of the action, voicing
eloquent on the need to curb corruption, completely uninhibited by the
dismal track record of their own almost thirty year old government in West
Bengal, that resulted in their decimation in the recent state elections.

Not one to be left out in the cold, Ms. Mayawati of Taj Corridor Case and
disproportionate assets case fame, has also elbowed her way into the
limelight vociferously declaring her wholehearted support to Anna Hazare's
anti corruption campaign.

The grand finale of course was all of us, worthy citizens of this great
nation, pouring out into the streets, with our flags, banners and slogans,
holding vibrant protest meetings, gathering outside Tihar jail, all in
support of Anna Hazare's anti corruption campaign. The same people who set
out on pilgrimages to holy places on our MLA and minister's dime, even as we
expect them to support and fund football tournaments, dances, plays,
festivals and feasts, Narkasurs and even family obligations. Where these
politicians are expected to get the money to finance this largesse never
ever seems to cross our minds.

Make no mistake. There is no doubt whatsoever about Anna Hazare's sincerity
and commitment to the cause and the campaign against corruption. But the
roots of this issue lie deeper than we think. It is comforting to think that
the Lokpal Bill will help solve the serious problem of corruption. But we
have a myriad stiff laws, conspicuous by their non implementation. And where
do we imagine our political parties will get the mind boggling amounts that
they need to run state and national elections.

The energy and enthusiasm that we see today is refreshing and encouraging.
But our role in democracy cannot be confined to voting once in five years
and coming out on the streets on emotive issues. It is imperative that we
consistently participate in our democracy by keeping abreast of current
issues, implications of Bills that are to be passed in the Parliament and
Assembly, and most of all engaging with our local MLAs and MPs on an ongoing
basis, so that they understand clearly that they represent the interests of
the nation, the state, and the people who elec

[Goanet] Goa Special Status Sabotage

2011-08-20 Thread Arwin Mesquita
For the last so many months and years, many Goans have been calling for
Special Status to preserve Goa's Prized Identity. This was even promised by
Sonia Gandhi when she was in Goa campaigning for the Goa Lok Sabha seats.
But some how I feel that Central Government with their Local Party leaders
in Goa, have deceitfully re-worded this to say "Special Status as a
Financial Package"? What is the point of getting Financial Special
Status for Goans if Goans lose Goa? It was the Congress Party which gave the
orders to annex Goa without Goan Views, and at that time promised that Goa's
Identity would be preserved within India. Now this party is doing the very
opposite and conveniently ignoring the true calls for Special Status of
preserving Goa's Identity. Recently I read an article in the media that
Goans are fully Intergrated into India; I agree only from the point of
excessive corruption, destructive development, degradation of the
environment, pollution of land/water, looting of the state's resources by
Central Politicians and their local Corrupt Political Goan Agents, reduction
of the Goan Demographics to a non-goan populace etc In view of all the
latter, I wonder if susegad Goans (Goa and Overseas) have realised, that
they been cheated of their land, resources and its Identity for so many
years and if nothing is done now then all these will be gone forever!!

The Canadian Dollar has done well, very well but that's on the back of being
a commodity currency, same as the Aussie Dollar. These are cycles and cannot

interest rates for Holders of SFR. It may do this again if there are no
options left on the table.

Lastly I have faith in the economy of India and China, can't put a good dog
down. The depreciation we have seen is the outflow of funds invested in the

movement in the West and a gradual improvement in the BRIC countries while
all the adjustments needed take place.

[Goanet] WHY IS GOA’S ARCHBISHOP EMBARRASSED TO DEPOSE IN COURT?

2011-08-20 Thread Aires Rodrigues
In his plea to the Court, to be exempted from deposing in the 2004
Ribandar Church case proceedings, the Archbishop of Goa Filipe Neri
Ferrao has accused me of having sought to have him summoned only to
embarrass him. The Archbishop has however not substantiated this
allegation. May I clarify that I have always held Rev Ferrao in high
esteem not because he is related to me but also for the warm and
upright individual he is as a person.

However, in an era of transparency and accountability, there should
not be a cover up. In the affairs of the Ribandar Church in 2004 the
Archbishop Filipe Neri Ferrao chose to look the other way, though I
had personally met him and had given him complete details of the
misdemeanour of his priest Father Newton Rodrigues. As the head of the
Catholic Church he ought to have cracked the whip and cleansed our
Parish.

We can only sympathise with the Archbishop for the state of the
helplessness that he finds himself in. The Archdiocese of Goa is not
immune to the malady of factionalism, groupism and thirst for power
that afflicts other institutions. Furthermore, the unholy nexus
between the Church and the Politicians does more damage than good.

Fifteen of Ribandar’s parishioners have had to face the brunt of a
false case filed by the Ribandar Church. We have spent seven long
years defending the alleged trespass that never happened. The Police
took 33 months to investigate a petty case like this. This case was
the only tool that the authorities could use to harass me, but it
will not cow me down from standing for what is right. By the Grace of
Almighty God, my determination, perseverance and patience shall always
be of steel.

The Ribandar Church case speaks for itself. We have been persecuted
for standing by a 13 year old girl who was allegedly molested on
church premises by the then Parish Priest, Father Newton Rodrigues,
who has now moved to Canada. He has shied away from and dodged the
Court cleverly. In fact, he had an opportunity to vindicate himself
but chose not to, because he might not have been able to. This
resulting inference is not a whimsical conjecture.

The Law requires that the Prosecution proves every case beyond
reasonable doubt. But if even an iota of evidence is established that
I had in any way breached the law on 16th August 2004 at the Ribandar
Church I would volunteer to face the most stringent punishment.

The proceedings of the 2004 Ribandar Church case will soon come an
end. But the memories of this seven year ordeal will not easily fade.
Definitely remembered will be His Grace the Archbishop of Goa for
failing to gracefully comply with the Court summons, a duty which is
required of every citizen.

Archbishop Filipe Neri Ferrao may have chosen to remain mum on the
affairs at the Ribandar church but he definitely cannot, for too long,
be a mere spectator to the alleged corruption in the administration of
the Catholic Church, in areas of finance, property, artifacts and
various other scandals. As the dirt beneath the carpets is oozing out,
like every other Catholic I can only wish, the Reverend Archbishop of
Goa all the very best in any clean-up operation he may decide to
embark on. Archbishop Ferrao may be embarrassed to have me in his
long list of relatives. There is nothing I can do about it. “You can
chose your friends but not your relatives” as the saying goes.

Fred, Australia is a happy place. From the moment you arrive here with a young
family, life and society
ensures the togetherness of the family. Perhaps more than anywhere else,
parents tend to spenda lot more time with their children: sport at weekends is
the big thing, tennis, cricket, rugby union, rugby league, swimming, surfing,
the list is endless. Both parents need to drive as well as car pool. We seem a
pretty contented bunch who always happy to meet, chat, and eat. Who is cooking
what? And how? What is the secret ingredient. Variations on the themes, food is
all the talk at most gatherings. We are comfortable with our religion and our
politics, there is no need to go on a fastunto death in Australia. Most kids
have grown up and are now fathering their own children. They hold pretty good
jobs andare recognised for their skill, intellect, drive, creativity,
leadership and honest hard work. They are the equal of the best Australia and
the world has to offer and are at home in any corner of the world. I guest it
has something to do with the weather, the sun does shine for us. I guess the
only problem, if it is a problem, is the greying process. Most GOA NSW members
are nowapproaching retirement. The younger generation, unlike those brilliant
young adults in Canada, are nottaking up the cudgels of club membership. Like
the local church, club functions have the appearance ofa seniors' social. There
are certainly fears for the future of the club. On the other hand, most young
folk marry outside their communities and everyone is very happy aboutthat.
There is a quiet assimilation taking place. Thank God I am alive in Australia.
Love it.

Let GRA/GSRP be the first one to put an election banners across the Toronto
streets.

Total population of Goans in Canada is slightly less than 40,000, of whom
90% are established in Toronto and the other 10% being mainly in Montreal
and Vancouver although there are scatterings in Calgary, Edmonton,
Winnipeg,

and Halifax.

RESPONSE: Four thousand families in Greater London; for the greater part
Goans are well integrated into the local community - problems would
therefore be the same as suffered by the locals. We probably have around 10
Village Feasts celebrated here in London; the biggest probably by the Union
of Navelim. One of the first was probably Saligao, please correct me if I am
wrong!

Hey this is one for Mrs Selma Carvalho?

Re: [Goanet] US Bank prime rates in the Eighties.

2011-08-20 Thread Roland Francis
Gabe, yours is an opinion I disagree with totally.

Your advice seems to be directed at overseas Goans. I will show why it's a
bad idea to invest in Rupee FDs in any Indian bank, whether the purpose is
to eventually spend the money in India or repatriate it to its origin.

For example SBI offers 9.25% for a 2 year term.
The Indian inflation rate (if you believe official figures) is currently
8.62%. That gives an effective yield of 0.63% on your investment. That would
not please anyone.

For overseas investors, it is not Indian inflation rate that is of
consequence but the rupee conversion, since the money is intended to be
repatriated.
Taking latest figures, from 20th July 2011 to 18th Aug 2011, (one month) the
Indian rupee fell by 2.70% against the USD. Annualize that and assume the
trend may continue and it jumps off the paper. Certainly overshadows the
9.25% interest rate you are getting. Huge exchange risk. Not to mention the
results to your investment if you get caught with an Indian currency
devaluation should the country want to make it fully convertible, during the
term of the FD.

Either way not a good investment. Savvy people in India will look elsewhere
in the markets to get a better yield, even if not guaranteed, and savvy
people overseas will not consider the abovementioned exchange risks worth
taking, assuming they can repatriate their money (which they probably cannot
in the type of account that is able to get those rates).

You have my opinion. Now please explain how you see it.

Roland.
Toronto.

With markets in a tizzy put your money in a State owned Indian Bank with a
yield of 8 percent plus that's in Rupees of course.
