[Goanet] Kiran Bedi accused of inflating bills, says 'no personal gain'
--- http://www.GOANET.org --- Protect Goa's natural beauty Support Goa's first Tiger Reserve Sign the petition at: http://www.goanet.org/petition/petition.php --- Kiran Bedi accused of inflating bills, says 'no personal gain' PTI | Oct 20, 2011, 11.56AM IST NEW DELHI, Already plagued by internal dissensions, Team Anna plunged into yet another controversy on Thursday with allegations against Kiran Bedi that she charged her hosts full fare on air tickets while availing discounts but the activist claimed there was no personal gain. Allegations were levelled against Bedi, a key member of Team Anna, that she used her gallantry medal to get 75 per cent discount on Air India tickets and then submitted inflated invoices to claim full fare from the organiers who have invited her to the function. It was also alleged that she claimed business class fare even when she was travelling in economy class. Reacting to the allegations, Bedi told PTI, business class travel is part of the invitation/entitlement from the event organizers/corporates I'm asked to speak at. Travelling economy is a choice despite entitlement is to ensure that savings remain with the NGO. (There is) no personal gain here. Sorry to disappoint detractors trying real hard to find a smoking gun. However, I accept this kind of coverage as a part of the challenges which being in public life poses, she said adding the money saved went to NGO India Vision Foundation run by her. I have nothing to hide. Whatever money came from the organisers of functions, it went to the institution, Bedi said adding she was not a beneficiary in this case as all the money she got went into her NGOs. I get a lot of money through my lectures and royalty on books. I donate it to the NGOs, she later told reporters. She also claimed that she herself downgraded her travel and even organisers knew about it. The person is aware that I am downgrading my travel. Organisers appreciate it. They say we appreciate your gesture that you have saved money for the foundation. Bedi said the institutions itself offer business class fare to her for attending their functions. When the invitation comes I take a decision whether I travel business class or I downgrade myself. I sometimes choose to do so and travel in economy class. The money so saved by travelling economy goes to the Foundation. There is no money which I withdraw. The invitation is to foundation, the cheque is to the foundation, the withdrawal is from the foundation and saved money is in foundation, she said. She also said when some NGOs invite her and they cannot afford, then she travels to them using the foundation money. Team Anna has been turmoil in the recent days following Hazare''s flipflop over Prashant Bhushan''s advocacy of plebiscite in Jammu and Kashmir and resignation of two prominent Core Committee members P V Rajagopal and Rajinder Singh complaining that decisions were not being taken democratically. There was also dissention in the team regarding the move to launch an anti-Congress campaign in Hisar bypolls and upcoming Assembly elections without proper discussion in the core committee --http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/india/Kiran-Bedi-accused-of-inflating-bills-says-no-personal-gain/articleshow/10425634.cms
[Goanet] : governance or fire fighting?
--- http://www.GOANET.org --- Protect Goa's natural beauty Support Goa's first Tiger Reserve Sign the petition at: http://www.goanet.org/petition/petition.php --- HAS THE UPAII AND THE CONGRESS ABDICATED GOVERNANCE It appears that the UPA II is in fire fighting mode The Governance of the country is thrown to the winds The Congress at every conceivable opportunity is deflacting and appropriating the blame towards the BJP. It sees it as all the evil personified BJP in turns is up to the same game. Being in the opposition it is utilising the circumstances to the hilt and cannot be faulted on that account The backlash against the Congress Candidates in the recent by polls is indicative of the peoples anger directed towards the Congress and the monumental corruptions Congress cannot be complacent any longer It is not weighing the impact of 2G , Adarsh CWG scams positively and is under an illusion For the first time top functionaries are incarcerated in the jail and even denied bail The power and influence of the politicians to avoid the judicial process has been totally ineffective The people are reeling under the burden of spiralling prices, the raising of interests several times in the last few months .Congress is condemning the wasteful expenditure on monuments and parks in U.P., but the scams involving the Congress could have built such parks in every state of India twice over. Congress is taking on Yedurappa case in consolation that it is not at all alone and has the company of BJP too.sharing the portfolio of corruption Govt is now toying and tinkering with the RTI act , which was the gift of UPA I under Sonia Gandhi, She is now singing a different tune in silence It is the RTI act thay has been the undoing of UPAII scandals The Congress is after Judicial activism and wants it not to cross Lakshman Rekha But the passing of resolutions and active support to death row convicts , is it niot interfering with the Judiciary? The SIT appointed in case of money laundering by the stud farm owner in Poona has made Congress see red The electronic media providing time the parties to bash one another has opened Pandora `s box The truth is visible to the listeners swiftly and undiluted or edited Further the Anna movement has made the Congress run for cover The mishandling of his arrest , imprisonment and subsequent release has made the congress obstinacy and arrogance , aggressiveness to bite the dust All attempts made to denigrate Anna as the agent of BJP and defaming the core committee have back fired There appears to be a pattern on the physical attempts on the team members.filing of cases and splitting the team on ideological considerations. The Congress appears to shooting the emissary, who is bringing the message and in a state of paranoia. There is practically no governance worth the salt, but the Govt has let loose the counter offensive against team Anna, electronic media,RTI Actto cushion its corruption scandals and simultaneous tirade against BJP The Congress veteran politicians are unashamedly busy propping up and proposing the crown prince ,the political novice and amateur to be their leader They are rattled by the prospects of Modi usurping the seat and hitting out at him with no holes barred strategy The bankruptcy of the Congress is seen as they have no credible leader to match Modi The Congress is loosing site of reality as it always did in the past. Anna who has raised the conscience of the people is a formidable force to counter with in the coming election The writing is on the wall for the Congress defending to the last breath the corruption of its allies under the guise of coalition politics eminent citizens have sounded the bugle for urgent reforms to nip in the bud the monster of corruption raising its ugly head. The proactive legal emissaries may even loose their seats for their attack on the media, RTI act, and team Anna The UPA Chairperson`s deafening silence is intriguing. The UPA for all practical purposes is on its last leg. Nelson lopes Chinchinm
[Goanet] Mining, The Elephant In The Room
--- http://www.GOANET.org --- Protect Goa's natural beauty Support Goa's first Tiger Reserve Sign the petition at: http://www.goanet.org/petition/petition.php --- Thank you Freddy for your posting - Mining, The Elephant In The Room. To add to what you said, may I just clarify that the issue of mining in Goais now viewed with distorted glasses thanks to myths and misinformation about its contribution to Goa’s state coffers and economy and employment. I can assure you that mining is not the backbone of Goa’s economy. I can assure you that even taking into account the number of people who are directly employed and indirectly employed by this industry, it is still a minority of people whose work is seasonal, not permanent or regulated, and it is short-term. The problem is that the few that have benefited are the ones who shout louder. People get the impression that mining is what kept Goa’s economy going so far because they get impressed with the noise and pollution by the 15.000 trucks (80% non-Goans) transporting ore up and down our narrow roads, and get impressed with the constant flow of 400 barges that go up and down Mandovi and Zuari rivers transporting ore and spilling several hundred thousand tones of iron ore in the rivers each year to the point of NIO having said that the estuaries of Mandovi and Zuari are in danger of total environmental collapse. Also there is the issue of presence of heavy metals in the food chain in Goa as result of pollution from mining dust and many other related issues that are conveniently swept under the carpet. But while so much noise is made by the few that are benefiting from the destruction of Goa, no one is saying much about the thousands of people whose livelihoods have been destroyed, whose health has been destroyed , whose entire villages have been dug out for mining, whose wells and ponds have dried up, whole agricultural land has been silted and so on…and this impact is as result of legal mines and illegal mines. The legality or illegality of it is not the issue . It is the destructive nature of the industry - can Goa's fragile ecosystem cope with it? There is an urgent need to make people aware of the myths and inconvenient truths about mining in Goa. And having started this process with Goans in the UK, I now hope to try and do a bit of awareness raising during my visit to Goa next month – especially I wish to impress upon people that there are alternatives to mining in Goa, alternatives that will bring long-term benefits and sustainability to livelihoods of our people. Goans should be armed with knowledge of real facts and figures about this issue, instead of just believing what the mine owners and government officials entangled in the webs of corruption, want Goans to believe. --- http://www.GOANET.org --- Protect Goa's natural beauty Support Goa's first Tiger Reserve Sign the petition at: http://www.goanet.org/petition/petition.php --- Dear editor Please publish this article from Deccan Herald LGBT tourism: Ramdev's outfit, church question Goa's move Panaji, Oct 20 (IANS) Hindu rightwing groups, Baba Ramdev's outfit and the Catholic church are angry with the Goa government and tourism industry's plan to put the state on the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transsexual (LGBT) tourism circuit. Bharat Swabhiman Trust (BST) started by Baba Ramdev has said it will oppose promotion of LGBT tourism in Goa. Even if the government gives permission, people here will not accept it. In the last few years, the Goa government has already allowed drug trafficking, casinos and prostitution to fester, now this! We are going to lobby with people against the promotion of LGBT tourism here, Kamlesh Bandekar, spokesperson for the BST, told IANS Wednesday. Rajesh Korgaonkar, spokesperson for the Hindu Janajagruti Samiti (HJS), said LGBT tourism would cause damage to the rich cultural and social fabric of the state. The government will be solely responsible for this. We condemn the LGBT programme and appeal to like-minded citizens of Goa to oppose this programme, he said. The church authorities are circumspect, blaming the Goa government's attempt to orient tourism to cater to LGBT tourists. We cannot alienate these people. No one can prevent them from coming here, but why does the government need to be oriented towards them, asked Fr Francisco Caldeira, spokesperson for the Bishop's House in Goa. Tourism experts have said LGBT tourism might constitute the biggest slice of India's tourist pie in the near future, with differently-oriented couples finding tourism in India, a cheaper alternative to other European countries and a safe haven, especially after homosexuality was decriminalized following a court order. The state tourism authority and travel and tourism groups have announced sensitisation efforts for LGBT tourism. It is an emerging tourism trend in Europe and has the potential to become one of the biggest segments in tourism, tourism director Swapnil Naik has said. Goa, known for its famous beaches, attracts nearly 2.6 million tourists annually, of which nearly half a million are foreigners. Thank you Bruno Gomes

The ESG CEO, Mr Manoj Srivastava, confirmed that the inspection of Ravindra Bhavan will be carried out next Friday by the IFFI committee, and expressed confidence that Ravindra Bhavan will be ready to host the opening ceremony on November 23. One of the PWD contractors pointed out that the biggest hurdle at the venue is the fact that landscaping and construction work are being done side-by-side, making it difficult to move material into the Ravindra Bhavan courtyard, thereby delaying the work. Also, a tussle broke out at the Ravindra Bhavan as the cables laid by the Electricity Department for the lamps in the parking lot were damaged during the excavation by the contractor involved in fixing the wrought iron gate. Ravindra Bhavan’s vice president, Mr Sridhar Kamat stated that he is unable to comment on the work and the IFFI team’s inspection since he is out of station at the moment. Ravindra Bhavan is currently closed for staging any kind of performances as it lacks a quality toilet facility because of the renovation works being carried out and people are forced to use the mobile toilets placed behind the building. With regard to the picture of the Ammonia tank in a miserable condition and report on the condition of the Zuari bridge in your esteemed daily, looks like the government is not concerned about the safety of Goa and niz goemkars. Also by clashing the IFFI with the Novenas and the festival of Goencho Saib confirms the concern of this present government with regard to the Security at Old Goa. This present elected government was not even aware of the legal and illegal aspects with regard to the mining in Goa.Is this what we expected in liberated Goa? [Goanet] Why this apathy about doing something positive and concrete for Goa? !
--- http://www.GOANET.org --- Protect Goa's natural beauty Support Goa's first Tiger Reserve Sign the petition at: http://www.goanet.org/petition/petition.php --- Seems like some of the anti-mining crusaders are now gradually descending from the western ghats to the foot hills. What we see is not Goan apathy, it is contempt for those riding a high horse. Goans have risen and displayed their anger at crucial junctures. But the communal segment has always remained aloof or supported just the opposite of what one segment of Goans has been asking. It is good to know which segment has risen to save Goa only to be repeatedly kicked in the back side and dubbed anti-national after the job gets done. This communal segment still thinks it can abuse the intelligence of Goans. We care less or take local people's sentiments for granted and impose our western and coloured version of solutions to problems. When GBA becomes Goa and Goa becomes GBA, we cannot expect much. We see the results of Anna becoming Parliament and Parliament becoming Anna. When criticisms from public are perceived as stones hurled at fruit trees by social activists, the end is predictable. Many more present noises against mining and the rape of Goa will melt into apathy after the 2012 Assembly polls only to rise again in 2017. Extremely sorry that these views are from an ' Uncivil Society'. Soter D'souza Socorro, N. Goa 9890056616

Doc, I was watching a Tv program this morning where some US lawmaker was pushing the idea of granting an immigration visa to anyone who would buy a house worth $250,000+ in the US. Now the question I have is, what does a person do after he has bought the house? People abandoned their houses and mortgages when they lost their jobs. After the new immigrant buys the house, does he get to learn the lesson of living in a community with no jobs or where everyone is leaving? Mervyn
[Goanet] Remembering Alfred Rose on his 8th Death Anniversary!
--- http://www.GOANET.org --- Protect Goa's natural beauty Support Goa's first Tiger Reserve Sign the petition at: http://www.goanet.org/petition/petition.php --- Alfred Rose, is indeed the best singer of all times and without doubt the one and only Melody King of Goa. Today, 8 years after his death, he lives on eternally. His songs today are just as popular as they were during his lifetime. I consider myself one of the biggest fan of The Legend Immortal Eternal Singer Alfred Rose. I like to listen his melodious songs all the time even though I am thousands of miles away from our motherland and always feel that the legend is somewhere around. His voice gives a lot of peace satisfaction to people’s mind. Every song of his had a unique message and very well delivered. Unfortunately, I could not talk to the Legend but I am happy that he at least saw me in person and heard all that I had to say before he left a gap in this Konkani music world. Just like all good things come to an end, the death of Alfred Rose brought an end to wonderful songs that we always would wait to hear. From what I have heard, he was a man of God and also a very humble kind hearted person. Though his career spanned for decades, he never won any major awards during his lifetime and never showed any interest towards them either. According to him, his awards were “his fans” worldwide. In February 2004, the Government of Goa decided to give an award to the Late Melody King. Therefore, Goa’s Melody King Alfred Rose was posthumously given a state award at the 2nd All India Konkani Sangeet Sammelan, the Chief Minister - Mr Manohar Parrikar handed the award to Rita Rose. In the year 2000, a Mapusa based “Konkani Seva Kendra” felicitated him for his contribution to Konkani language. In the presence of Konkani scholar Dr Tanaji Halarnkar, then Tourism Minister Victoria Fernandes did the honours of felicitating the aging singer, amidst a thunderous applause. She also promised to take cognizance of the memorandum handed over to her by the Konkani Seva Kendra, and said she would work towards getting Kala Academy’s open air auditorium named after Alfred Rose. For all the fans, I would just hope this dream comes true and would like to ask, how many years more would it take to have this dream come true?? Does a Melody King or his family deserve to wait for 11 years since this was initiated?? Viva Alfred Rose and May his soul rest in peace. - Agnelo Fernandes
[Goanet] Is the govt waiting for us to die to repair the Zuari bridge? From the Herald

If that was shocking, here is something which the government of Goa should be acutely guilty of-- jeopardizing the lives of almost close to half a million people daily.Documents in Herald’s possession now prove that the government is only waiting for a tragedy to happen before it constructs a new bridge. To start with Herald has a report received under Right to Information Act, which has clearly put before the government the actual condition of the bridge.A report prepared by the Executive Engineer (XIV) RM Deshpande after leakage was noticed inside the box cantilever of the bridge in July 2011, during monsoons, reveals the actual condition of the bridge“Surface cracks on the asphalt surface, running in length of 20 cm to 80 cm with 1 to 2 mm width, numbering about 35 have developed along the whole length of 830 metres. Cracks can be noticed as external surface cracks longitudinally as well as horizontally all along for the bridge”. The report however stated that they did not penetrate the inside structure of the bridge yet.It further adds, “There are old cracks which were sealed in 2006 and before, and some of them were again opened on P5-span.”It also said that there was a leakage of one glass of water from the P5 pillar. This is a critical zone as a 40 cm circle has been noticed with multiple cracks.“This pier has 8 new cracks which have led to trickling of water inside the bridge. Also new leakage is observed through the block bolt,” the report says. The report has also suggested some remedies to improve the condition of the bridge. However it has strictly maintained that the “new bridge is to be constructed without any further delay” without actually saying that this bridge will not last long. After going through the report, Team Herald also went inside the cantilever box to know the actual position and the revelations were startling. Our subsequent reports will reveal more startling truths.
[Goanet] These other bills
--- http://www.GOANET.org --- Protect Goa's natural beauty Support Goa's first Tiger Reserve Sign the petition at: http://www.goanet.org/petition/petition.php --- On at least 12 occasions, Kiran Bedi appears to have inflated her travel expenses while charging the institutions and NGOs inviting her for seminars, even as she used her own travel discount as a gallantry award winner — keeping the rest of the money for her own purposes. Bedi defends herself, saying that she was travelling less comfortably than she was entitled to, and using the money left over for her NGO. Her accountant also described this as a clever saving. But what would be a trivial human workaround by most people’s standards is a grand moral lapse, by Team Anna’s standards. Kiran Bedi’s sanctimony and absolutism when it comes to others is what makes her small bill-fudging so damaging. India Against Corruption rides on a wave of popular repugnance with rent-seeking, it has rallied citizens who have been bruised by their encounters with the state, with the red-tape and harassment, and the rampant corruption. But in that tide of emotion, the “movement” has chosen to simplify and polarise matters. Instead of formulating a broader vision about corruption, understanding its various contexts and the range of behaviours it describes, they narrowed the aperture to one specific version of the Lokpal bill — gheraoing legislators who objected to certain clauses, declaring them compromised. If Team Anna had been less given to immediate and unforgiving judgement, perhaps Bedi’s explanations would have been received with a more open mind. Whether it is Kiran Bedi inflating bills, Arvind Kejriwal being remiss in reimbursing the government for salary drawn while he was on study leave, or the Bhushans and their real estate investments, Team Anna should square with itself and then start identifying what constitutes corruption, deception, and what is simply human resourcefulness, or finding a way to live with rigid and unrealistic rules. What, for instance, are the clear lines between “I used it for my NGO” and “I used it for my political party”? This episode should be a reminder that what they call corruption comes in S, M and XL sizes and there is a difference between ordinary humbug and serious fraud, and those difference matter terribly. In a liberal democracy, these questions about ethics should always be up for debate, as should proposed solutions and checks. To cleanse the system we need a real, nuanced conversation, not grandstanding. http://www.indianexpress.com/news/these-other-bills/863011/
[Goanet] 22nd Death Anniversary of Dr. Jack de Sequieira commemorated
--- http://www.GOANET.org --- Protect Goa's natural beauty Support Goa's first Tiger Reserve Sign the petition at: http://www.goanet.org/petition/petition.php --- RICH TRIBUTES PAID TO DR.JACK DE SEQUEIRA IN LONDON The International For Romi Konknni-UK a Konkani organization have commemorated the 22nd death anniversary of Dr.Jack de Sequeira commonly known as the Father of the Opinion Poll-1967 on 17th of October 2011 in Middlesex London. In the beginning a minute silence was observed before the commemoration starts. It all started with a get together by the members of the Konkani association and other Goans working around Middlesex. Speaking first the President of the association Mr. Floriano Fernandes said on this day a Goan patriot and the loving son of the soil commonly known as the Father of the Opinion Poll-1967 late Dr. Jack de Sequeira passed away leaving behind him the true symbol of Goan Identity. He said this association is completing two years on this day as it was founded on his 20th death anniversary in 2009. Mr. Fernandes is all praise for the great leader and his gallant efforts to safe guard Goan Identity by winning the historic opinion poll conducted on 16th of January 1967 to settle the merger issue with Maharastra. He further said and put the important question to the gathering as to find out the reasons that makes the govt. to shy away of installing a life size Statue of Dr. Jack de Sequeira. Is our Goa govt. not ready for honouring son of the soil or are they trying to change the history of Unique Opinion Poll? Did the govt.is interested to project a new leader from the current set of politicians and claim the credit of the Opinion Poll-1967? Before winding up his speech he put up a suggestion to include Dr. Sequeira’s photo on the letter head as a Goan Identity logo. The suggestion was passed and permitted by thunderous applause. General Secretary of IVFRK Mr. Orlando Joao said a fresh attempt is to be made and a written demand is to be put with the govt. through our association. He reminded that on 16th of January 2012 Goa will be completing 45 years of Opinion Poll and this is the right opportunity to put the demand. Some members of the association and members of Goan public requested to form a committee and try to contact upcoming leader from South Goa Miss Valanka Alemao to take this issue with the Govt. of Goa. Some of the Goans from Salcete suggested contacting South Goa MP Mr. Francisco Sardinha for the MP fund as he can contribute to install a life size statue in Salcete especially near the Zuari Bridge round about at Cortalim. They said the need of the Statue in South Goa is necessary as the win for the Opinion Poll-1967 was started from Cortalim onwards where history was made. Mr. Mario Estrocio - Panjim, Jose Gomes - Cansaulim, Baburao Gauns - Mapuca, Floriano Cardozo –Sarzora, Milford Fernandes-Margao, Sebastaio Fernandes from Benaulim, and David Gurjao from Agacaim are the prominent speakers. Vice President of IVFRK –UK Mr. Dominc Carvalho from Merces proposed the vote of thanks. In the end the new managing committee of Internatioinal Voice for Romi Konknni-UK was elected for the two years term. Francisco Floriano Fernandes President: International Voice For Romi Konknni-UK
