Jagotik Konknni Songhotton (JKS) – Global Konkani Organization – is an 
organization of institutions promoting Konkani language in different 
parts of the country and the world in different scripts. JKS is formed 
with a sole aim for forging unity among the Konkani people scattered in 
various regions. JKS believes in unity of Konkani people by accepting 
the diversity of scripts and dialects of Konkani language.


The 1st Regional Conference organized by JKS on ‘The Status and Future 
of Konkani Language’ will take place on Sunday, 20th November 2011 at 
10:00 am at the Conference Hall of Tiatr Academy Goa, Block A, 2nd 
Floor, Campal Trade Centre, Campal, Panjim. The Conference will be 
inaugurated by Rev Fr. Vasco Rego, Chief Editor of the Konkani monthly 
‘Rotti’, at 10:30 am. The full day Conference will have three sessions.


The 1st session will deal with ‘The status and future of Konkani 
language in Goa’. Shri. Vincy Quadros, Vice President, Goa Konknni 
Akademi will present the paper and Dr. Rev Fr. Pratap Naik, Director, 
Thomas Stephens Konknni Kendr will chair the session.


The 2nd session will discuss ‘The Status and future of Konkani language 
at the national and international level’. Paper presentation is by Shri. 
Tomazinho Cardozo, President, Tiatr Academy Goa. The session will be 
chaired by Shri. Yusuf Sheik, Konkani poet and former director of All 
India Radio.


The 3rd session will deal with ‘Scripts of Konkani language – issues and 
solutions’. Shri. Eric Ozario, Gurkar - Mandd Sobhann Mangalore will 
present the paper while Shri. Premanand Lotlikar, President, Dalgado 
Konknni Akademi, will chair the session.


Presentation of every paper will follow with an interaction with the 
participants. Ways and means to strengthen the unity among Konkani 
lovers of all scripts of Konkani will be discussed and resolutions will 
be taken.


The Conference will also discuss about the organization of the ‘1st 
World Konkani Conference’ in Goa.

RESPONSE: The official name of the airport in the place now called Mumbai
is  Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport. Not sure IF the airplane was
invented during Shivaji's time.
BTW: Is this following advert appearing "in your face" at the top of every
GoaNet post date-barred or not?

LOK SAMRUDHI YATRA AT CHINCHINIM

It  began on 14 Nov. birthday of Nehru,an at Patradevi and winding its way
to Canacona, traversing various constituencies befor closing at Panjim on
22 Nov

It was held at Chinchinim on18.Nov, at 12.p.m ,starting at Dandeavado
junction on NH 17, and ending at ST Sebastian CHAPEL All shades of  nearly
3000 plus, supporters ,the highest so far according to the comments of the
reporter. The supporters of different ages  including voters from Sao Jose
Areal, enlarged Velim Constituency, tracked one Km ,distance in scotching
sun holding water bottles to quench their thirst The stretch was plastered
with life size cut-outs , posters of National and local leaders and
fluttering Congres flags and people  wore colourful Congress scarves. The
crowd was lead by Eng Filipe Neri Rodrigues,Subash Sirodlkar and a host of
Congress functionaries of the party. The disclosed and professed motive was
to celebrate, 50 years of Goa liberation ,honour the memory and
contribution of valiant freedom  fighters, remember Nehru for operation
Vijay, Indira Gandhi for the opinion poll,  to decide the choice and
identity and Rajiv Gandhi for the state hood The Congress is proud of the
development of health,  drinking water supply, electricity and Education
under Congress Stewardship. Congress takes pride in maintaining communal
harmony among other things. Goa is described as the beauty spot on the face
of India. Minister Fillipe responded with gratitude for attendance and
promised to address the needs of the people He made special public
reference of his determination  to get the bypass to NH17 and was fully
supported by Subash Shirodkar, the Congress President The affected people
were visibly relieved and all  present received the announcement with
thunderous applause

The Action committee will move a resolution at the coming Gram Sabha to
incorporate the bypass in the final RP 2021 The interim report has not
shown the bypass as the there are technical deficiencies on the earlier by
pass incorporated in the RP of ChinchinimVillage The Minister has co
operated in resurvey, now finalised  by the Goa Govt and hopefully it will
find place in the final RP2011 by 5.Dec 2011, the last date. Fortunately
the speakers accepted that they were too young at the time of liberation,
opinion poll to be immersed and involved politically

charged PWD minister Churchill Alemao of fooling his voters by failing to 
deliver on his last poll manifesto.The dentist also challenged Churchill to 
contest against him in Benaulim. Churchill's daughter Valanka is pitted against 
Gomes in Benaulim, while Churchill is keen to contest from Navelim. To a query 
from reporters he was addressing, Gomes said he would prefer to contest against 
the heavyweight politician rather than Valanka.He claimed Alemao has "resumed 
his traditional tricks of fooling Goans just before the elections"."Churchill 
has been consistently making tall and false promises before elections. In the 
last elections, he floated a regional party-Save Goa Front-as a protest over 
Regional Plan (RP) 2011 and to safeguard the interests of Goans on many 
important issues. After the elections, he just
 dropped 'save Goa' from his agenda. He literally hijacked the Goa Bachao 
Abhiyan movement by capitalizing on its name,"Gomes said.He questioned Alemao's 
silence over the Mopa airport issue, the de-notification of land for Dabolim 
airport's expansion and the Romi script (Konkani in Roman script) 
issue.Referring to Alemao's statements in the media supporting people's 
agitations against the notified RP 2021, Gomes dared Alemao to resign from the 
cabinet. "Was it not the cabinet which approved the modifications in RP 2021 
before notifying the same?" asked Gomes.In a deriding gesture, he charged 
Alemao with failing to raise the economic conditions of Benaulim's locals, 
going by the very high number of BPL beneficiaries."By registering hundreds of 
people under the BPL scheme, Churchill is acknowledging that he is either a 
failed leader or a leader who is fooling people before elections. He needs to 
be replaced by a leader who will help people to rise above
 the poverty level and become economically independent. I challenge Churchill

The Church Parish Halls & Church grounds in Bombay should be utilized for
providing Christian youth basic coaching & information on what
educational/physical/medical qualifications are required for joining the
police force, armed forces, bankingsector, metro, monorail,
suburbanrailways, airlines, etc etc etc etc etc etc etc……….the local
Christian associations – federations – panchayats should make extensive use
of the parish halls & church grounds for political meetings – trade fairs –
science exhibitions – business meetings, etc……….every Sunday alcohol
de-addiction camps should be setup in the church grounds and free
anti-alcohol literature & medicines should be distributed……….the use of the
parish halls & church grounds should also be utilized by RTI – Civic –
Ecology – Environmental – Citizen activists to train others on how to
protect the last few bits of openspaces – mangroves – forestland -
saltpanlands in bombay from being encroached by slumlords & builderslobby &
how to expose corruption in bmc, politics, govt. depts.. etc……...The Church
also needs to put up on the notice boards jobs that are available in the
government sector at present the notice boards only contains jobs available
in call centers & hotels………Rather than merely expecting catholic students
to complete the minimum basic exams (S.S.C, H.S.C), we must train them for
professions that will make a mark in civil society; for instance, IAS, IPS,
UPSC, Law, Medicine, Engineering, Politics. In addition, they should be
made aware of larger issues of national and global interest.

Decade after decade & century after century the Vatican has mostly
appointed goan origin bishops for Bombay……what is so special about the goan
bishops…..and what is the role of bishops in bombay other than giving
secular speech and ignoring the corrupt activities of some of the parish
priests……..we need bishops for bombay who can order all parish priests in
bombay to utilize vacant church properties for setting up gardens –
communityhalls – playgrounds – graveyards or utilize church properties for
housing needs of poor catholics………order catholic schools in bombay to
reserve 50% seats for catholics……..meet Union & State ministers and demand
5% job quota for bombayvillagers (or eastindians) in govt. jobs, govt.
housing, etc in bombay……..obviously brother the Vatican operates in an
Undemocratic way and the bombay laity will not have any say on what type of
Bishops should be appointed for the bombay diocese.

Kerala supplies around 75% of missionaries & nuns for India and in the last
decade in some cities in India most of the nurses are also from malyalee
community………Kerala is the only state in India where there are more women
than men……in other states because of rampant female foeticide/infanticide
the population of females has gone down………kerala does not have proper
infrastructure, industries, office/factory jobs due to which the Malyaless
have to migrate all over India & Gulf in search of livelihood……..They are
all over the world with a United Kerala Samajam. But hardly they are united
in anything inside their own state that they are up with violence and
strikes that no one wants to start an industry there.

Today the population of christians in Goa is around 30%..with migrants
pouring into Goa….a decade or two from now the population of christians in
goa will reduce to 10% or less...and then the native christians in goa
will not have any say in the politics & administration of goa……..and
chances are in the near future if the shiv sena comes to power in Goa they
will obviously change the name of Goa to some other name……….but the native
christians in goa will still identify themselves as Goans………so brother
please don’t expect the native christians or eastindians of bombay to
identify with the name Mumbai……even the kolis don’t identify with the name
Mumbaikar they still identify themselves with the name Koli………..the name of
bombay was changed to Mumbai not by Eastindians & kolis but by the trade
union of the marathi migrants i.e. shiv senathe native places of
marathi migrants living in bombay are khandesh, konkan, vidharbha,
westernmaharashtra, marathwada and these regions are still backward and
rural with no scope of industries & factory/office jobs due to which the
marathi people will always have to depend on Bombay for office/factory jobs
although in recent years Pune has added some office/fac

Advocate General of Goa Mr. Subodh Kantak should immediately resign taking
moral responsibility for the Goa Governor losing his battle in the High
Court against the Right to Information Act.



It was on Advocate General Subodh Kantak’s flawed and patently unsound
legal advice that the Goa Governor had taken a stand that he is not a
Public Authority and did not come within the ambit of the Right to
Information Act. It is incomprehensible how Mr. Subodh Kantak could advice
the Governor that he was not a Public Authority when every Governor in the
country as well as the President of India were complying with the Right to
Information Act.



The expenditure on this unwarranted litigation by the Governor vis-à-vis
the RTI Act should be recovered from Mr. Subodh Kantak. Chief Minister
Digambar Kamat should  give one good reason why India’s highest paid
Advocate General Subodh Kantak who has been paid over five crores over the
last five years should continue as the State’s Advocate General.



Mr. Subodh Kantak’s continuance as Advocate General was detrimental to the
State’s interests. A major cause for all the mess that this Government is
embroiled in is due to the wrong and politically tainted legal advice being
given to the Government by the Advocate General. Mr. Subodh Kantak had done
irreparable damage to the high constitutional post of Advocate Genial by
his overall professional misconduct and lowering of professional ethics.
Mr. Subodh Kantak’s successor would have a colossal task clearing the mess
left behind.



The Government can now no longer turn a Nelson’s eye to the blatant
misdeeds of Mr. Subodh Kantak. There is an urgent need to appoint an
honest, upright and a competent Advocate General for the State of Goa.

limits 


 

Command-and control system failure

 

  

If you ever needed evidence that socialist ideology, political populism and
the utter lack of governance holds India to ransom, all you have to do is to
study the power crisis gripping India. For the past several weeks, the
country has reeled from outages that last so long that they have become the
norm; the few hours that power is available are the unusual occurrence. The
gap between supply and demand is thought to be in excess of 15 percent on
the average: ranging for zero in the case of Lutyens Delhi, home of the
ruling class, to more than 50 percent in rural areas.

 

India's power crisis bears examination because it highlights the sheer
inability of the public sector edifice to meet the demands of a rapidly
growing economy. 

 

Let's start at the source. The predominant fuel used in power generation is
coal. The mining of the material is in the hands of a government monopoly,
Coal India Limited, widely regarded as inept and corrupt. Faced with demands
for increased production, the company actually told the coal ministry it is
lowering its production target for 2011-12 by four million tons. Most
analysts believe when March 2012 comes rolling around, the company will
report a much bigger shortfall. In the first half of the year, ended
September, Coal India fell short by 20 million tons.

 

Among other fuels, the government has been unable to secure assured supplies
of natural gas or alternative fuels to mitigate the coal deficit.

 

Power generation is also largely a government monopoly run by similarly
inept and corrupt public sector companies. Despite grandiose plans to
increase power generation, the government achieved only 50 percent of its
targets in the 20 years ending 2012. A Planning Commission official was
quoted as saying that if the power ministry had succeeded in meeting its
targets, the coal shortages would have been worse.

 

One of the key risks in the generation of power is environmental pollution.
The agency in charge of ensuring that the risk is mitigated is the ministry
of environment and forests, which in recent years has become a hotbed of
populism. The ministry, in 2009, announced a ban on mining in forests and
tribal areas. It also opposed hydroelectric projects in various parts of the
country. Its views on nuclear power are also skeptical, led by fears of
accidents.

 

Beyond that, because power supply is a concurrent subject, state governments
are in charge of the distribution of power to citizens. Mostly, provincial
governments supply electricity through state electricity boards (SEBs).
Again, corrupt and inept, the utilities are bankrupt entities. A 2001
Planning Commission report on the working of these utilities says, "It may
be noted that the information provided in the report is not always based on
audited reports of the SEBs as the accounts of many SEBs are audited with a
considerable time lag."

 

In certain cities like Bombay and Ahmedabad, where the generation,
transmission and distribution of power in the hands of private companies,
the costs of power are higher but the supply is reliable. I have lived in
both cities and thereafter in the US, so my first experience of a power cut
was in Delhi. Things improved dramatically in the capital after 1998 when
the Sheila Dikshit government privatized power distribution. Just the
drastic reduction in the huge (nearly 50 percent) "transmission and
distribution" losses (theft) made more power available. 

 

India's power conundrum provides a snapshot of the challenges policymakers
faces as they try to cope with the demands of a new India. The Socialist
command-and-control system simply does not work. As its hold diminished,
businessmen and entrepreneurs showed that without the dead hand of
government bearing down on the economy, they could work wonders.

"freedom from" moment has passed; the "freedom to" moment of the modern
economy calls for bold political leadership such as greater, crony-free
privatization; it demands better-trained, more responsive an

BENAULIM IN  THE  RECKONING
The over-stretched monsoons had just given way to a burst of a bright autumn 
day. But the wildly overgrown shrubbery around the house, had yet to begin its 
surrender of greenery to an unpredictable change in the weather. It was a 
welcome change nevertheless, and a fine day for an old easy-chair to come out 
and stare at the sun, as well.  It had now made its way out in the verandah 
outside. 
This chair has survived several monsoons, and is still fit enough to tell tales 
of generations it has outlived without so much as a squeak. Steady on its legs, 
it  lays back  to lend comfort to a tired torso, and its arm-rests can extend 
as far as fatigued feet need to rest on.
It is said that the incredibly strong frame of this easy-chair was created 
nearly a century ago by the ingenious craftsmen of Benaulim. The quality of 
teakwood that was probably transported from Goa’s forested interiors, made its 
own contribution toward this lasting piece of furniture. And not lagging 
behind, is the intricately woven cane-work that challenges the modern day 
foamed cushioning, by its sheer facility to ‘breathe’, inspite of a heavy human 
load and the relentless humidity surrounding it.
The village of Benaulim lies on the coastal belt of southern Goa. The village 
was famous (as also in other areas in contemporary times), for producing 
exquisitely carved wood furniture. It was of wood in toto, save alone for the 
cane used as a centrespread for chairs and sofas. Even its joints were free of 
nails, and thus devoid of creaking crevices. Ever wondered at the classical 
beauty of furniture in an average ‘Sashti’ drawing room? Bet, it must have come 
out of the crafty chisel of a ‘theoi’ (carpenter) from Benaulim. 
However, its title to this piece of art, was overshadowed through the years by 
a band of craftsmen in other forms of art. Benaulim’s playwrights, songsters 
and musicians were the latter day talk-of-the-town. They sprang up on Goa’s 
carnival scene, like daffodils blooming with the onset of spring. Street plays 
(khels) during Goa’s carnival revelry, used to be the dominance of the Benaulim 
boys. It was taboo for girls to take part in such plays in those days. So the 
boys took over, and so creditably too, that oftentimes it was a tricky task in 
guessing their guise.
As years travelled along, the ‘Shakespeares’ of Benaulim made way to yet 
another accolade for their already talked about village. The place now boasts 
of an ocean-hugging beach, and bevies of sun-kissing tourists from around the 
world to laze on it. Weekends never stop hosting social or cultural events in 
any of its multi-faceted facilities, and the waves never stop gushing out 
sounds of celebration all around.
From a small-time wood carving cradle, to a place on the world’s tourism map, 
is like a reverie turned into reality. I reminisced on the trajectory of that 
transformation, while slouched in that very chair that had once crossed the 
‘rio Sal’ over to my own village of Assolna.

Telaulim Mega show (Rup tujem Laita Pixem)
Konkani Musical Fiesta
Navelim 17th Nov. 2011.
The mega show was to start at 7.30pm.
We arrived at 8.30pm
The show started at 9.12pm
We left at 10.45 pm
The show must have ended at 1am

There was no overhead cover for the general public.
At 8.30, the vacant chairs were completely wet with dew (mobhavelo dou)
Many ladies seen with their heads covered with saree ‘palou’ caps, maflor, 
scarf etc.
However, there was a covered pendal for the VIPs including the village Compelao.

That’s not very nice... the show should start on time. 
Directorate of Art & Culture and Goa Tourism should put conditions before 
allowing any grants to such events. 

And what about the 10 o'clock sound rule?
Does not apply to Government sponsored events?
The Chief Guest (Churchill) himself arrived at 10.15pm
