Fascinating photos! The couple on 1890s photo are sitting on a chair
that is exactly the same as the ones I have at home. I am wondering if
they are my ancestors! Any clues yet of their names?

The wedding photo is of Dr Rego - my sisters will identify all the names
of the bride and her sisters on the photo. I knew them very well as a
child in Goa, in fact they were my neighbours and used to live in the
house next to the one that is the Portuguese Consulate now (on the left
Portuguese Consulate and right Dr Rego's old house)

[Goanet] Give us back our Goa

2012-02-06 Thread Sandeep Heble
Give us back our Goa
By Dr. Samir Heble

Give us back our Goa,
That was pure as gold.
Unblemished, incorruptible
devoted and bold.

Give us back our Goa
where noble values mattered,
Where everyone was respected
and life was not battered.

Take away the corruption.
Take away the greed.
Give us back our Goa
A land that will lead.

Take away those palaces
built in dishonest ways.
Give us back our modest nests
Where we can humbly run and play.

Give us back those unspoilt beaches
Whose waters were clear blue.
We yearn to run on the sands
With pride anew.

Give us back our pristine land
where labour was divine.
Where money was not a frenzied craze
Where hard work would shine.

It's now time to act.
We are inherently strong
So let's take this pledge
To abolish all wrong.

[Goanet] Obituary: Smt Vimladevi Deora Nikam

2012-02-06 Thread Goanet Obit
Smt Vimladevi Deora Nikam, Wife of Barrister Deora Nikam and mother of
Special Public Prosecutor, Shri. Ujjwal Nikam and mother-in-law of
Shantaram Naik, MP Rajya Sabha from Goa, passed away on February 6, 2012
at Jalgaon at the age of 87, due to old age. She was born on January 26,
1926 at Belgaum. During her young days she had participated in the
freedom struggle and had assisted the freedom fighters by providing them
assistance to transport arms and ammunitions.

However she declined to avail any of the benefits of a freedom fighter,
post the independence of the nation on the ground that her service to
the motherland was her bounden duty for which she expected no returns.
Smt Nikam came from a very illustrious family. Her maternal uncle was a
Colonel in the military and her elder brother Mr. M. R. Desai was a
philanthropist and an 'Education Baron'. He had propagated the
significance of education in western Maharashtra and had also provided
free education to several students.

Smt Nikam was a woman with great patience and her virtues were inspiring
to all. Her husband Barrister Deora Nikam could pursue his Barrister
degree at London only because of her support as during his absence she
resided in the village and looked after the agricultural land of family.

Vimladevi lived an exemplary life. She is succeeded by Shri. Dilip
Nikam, Shri. Ujjwal Nikam, Shri. Pravin Nikam, Smt Meena Rane, Smt Beena
and son-in-law Shri Subhash Rane ex-Mayor of Kolhapur and Shri Shantaram
Naik MP (Goa).

[Goanet] Sripad Naik's bouncing has left BJP swirling

2012-02-06 Thread SOTER
If press reports are to be believed, then Sripad Naik has played a master
stroke by refusing the BJP ticket for Porvorim constituency. Soft and silent
but he has political shrewdness and understands the under currents in Goa's
politics which activists do not. In forgoing the opportunity to contest, he has
remained an even bigger threat to the actual caste forces weilding power. He
has returned their ingratitude in the same measure. Minus the BJP, Sripad could
emerge as the hope for Goan unity to crush the upper caste designs in Goa's
politics.

[Goanet] Pseudo Religions Goans

2012-02-06 Thread Arwin Mesquita
** I find it quite outrageous to see frequent mention of known Anti Goans
as Hindu/Catholic/Muslim Politicians. Today these respected religions are
actually being insulted, by so many MLA's tagging themselves to either of
these great faiths. These Anti Goans, many of whom today have Senior
Positions in the Goa Government are evil to the core i.e. Drug Lords,
Smugglers, Prostitution, Criminals, Scamsters, Destruction of the
Environment, High levels of corruption etc. As a Catholic myself, I am
disgusted with the names of Prominent "Catholic in name" Ministers who are
involved in so many horrific/corrupt activities, which is destroying our
beautiful state of Goa. It is high time we examine our conscience and see
if we (Local & Non Resident Goans) are actually in some manner, supporting
these Pseudo Religious Ministers/MLA's who use religion as a tool for
political mileage; which allows them to continue in power for their
destructive activities in Goa. If we (Hindus/Catholic/Muslim) do, then we
are also pseudo religious people, living in sheer balant hypocrisy, of the
true teachings of our respective great faiths!!

Nelson, like the subject mater says, was determined to be different.

Nelson's airport was O HARARE

Harare is in Zimbabwe.

Definitively different.

[Goanet] : Change about changes

2012-02-06 Thread Nelson Lopes
Change,about changes
...
Everyone propagates changes from preachers , teachers, philosophers,
politicians, parents, writers et al.but changing oneself is the best, though
appears the easiest, but practically more difficult Hence change by
example is contagious and more effective and lasting. Not all changes
are desirable that will satisfy universally, meeting completely
everyone's desired aspirations. Adapting to change and accepting to
live with it has fewer ramifications of discomfort, disappointments. We
cannot always mould others and their opinions to our own standards of
thinking and philosophies and yet we do it all the times convinced of
our indispensability People at
times are infatuated with their ingrained, egoist self perception of
right, wrong
desirable and undesirable Change must provide a better alternative to
make it worthwhile in any field of human endeavour It is said that
remedy/cure should not be worst than disease and aggravate it The
world is constantly changing making living better, but such changes
are progressive with some drawbacks. If experimentation with calculated
risks are not taken, then the world would be static When it comes even to
insignificant routine changes we are used to, like shifting our fixed
place at the dinner table, purposely altering our daily routine.
wearing a shirt instead of half sleeve, changing into saree from dress
, brushing with left hand, holding by left hand cup of tea or use a
cup or mug in the place of glass, wearing a half sleeve outside,
sleeping on the other end of the bed, experimenting with our sense of
colour etc, there is resistance There is perceptible resistance to
every change that we may
be required to make.Changes can be brought about very rapidly in
assimilation and dissemination of knowledge, but changes in attitudes
take much  longer and finally changes in behaviour are the most time
consuming to show the effectiveness of Change When the physical
harmless changes are difficult, mental and behaviourval changes rest
on laboured efforts and persistence sportingly and if it materialises
enjoy it. In a democracy, the right
and freedom to choose by the individual by his own perception·must be
respected The monority has the right to say , but the majority has the
way
.Changes in political field as in the Arab world have been motivated
by oppressive regimes and by spontaneous mass movements without any
known leadership The upsurge of the people is self motivated springing
from within. In India too, though considered immature, we have shown
to the literate, politically matured Nations, that democracy in India
is vibrant and here to stay .The political changes at home are
achieved by unfair means In our own state of Goa too, there is rightly
clamour for change and the winds seem to be blowing with young entrant
voters. It is the best hope to bank upon to tilt the scales against
status quo. The word ChANge has CAN embedded in it, which we all
aspire.have(h) guts(g) enough (e) and do it i CAN, you,CAN, we CAN,
but we is not majority, all and everyone we hope Lets hope for the
change , work diligently for it and when it
does not happen have the courage to accept it , or rejoice with the
hope that things will be better

[Goanet] Days' summary (02/06/2012)

2012-02-06 Thread Rajan P. Parrikar
To Goanet -

1) It is hard for me to feel enthusiastic about the upcoming election.  In
my emphatic view, Goa is gone.  It is unrecoverable.  I see some friends
still nursing hope that things can be reversed, and sometimes my heart goes
soft too, for optimism is what drives us onward.  However, I try not to let
the softness of heart extend to the mind (to borrow a line from Milton
Friedman).

JC has recently furnished a link to what he wrote in 2002.  The Goa he
describes therein had already begun its downward spiral.  But if I could
turn back the clock, I would embrace the Goa of 2002 in a heartbeat.
The ghati deluge, the mega projects, the rich outsiders, the Delhi pigs
parking themselves here for the 'lifestyle' - all of that happened in
a big way in the decade following.  The Goa of 2002 by comparison
looks positively refreshing.

2) If there is one constituency I have a particular interest in, it is
Margao.  I pray to God that Digu is dealt a kick in his nuts and
rubbished out of town on election day.  It is a fantasy, of course, but
a man is allowed that pleasure occasionally.

Remember that Digu told Goans - and the reaction of those ladies
to whom he dealt it is recorded on video - that he no longer needed
votes of Goans, that his migrant vote bank is sufficient for him.  So is
any Goan other than Digu's immediate family going to vote for him?
If yes, why?

3) The funny of the day -

http://in.news.yahoo.com/mamata-wants-hong-kong-style-financial-district-goa-053352084.html

Mamta wants to turn Goa into Hong Kong!  Didn't you know, every
effing Indian has the first dibs on Goa and its land.  Didn't you know,
it's in the effing Indian 'constitution' and Indians have 'rights.'  You
Goan, go stand in the back of the class.

Seriously, this kind of crapshoot is made possible because there
are Goan toadies today who run after every little bhailo pr*ck, the
licks intensifying if the said bhailo is of the right skin tone.  But
brown trash will do, if fair & lovely is unavailable.

[Goanet] NEWS: Naik-Parrikar sideshow hits BJP (Hindustan Times)

2012-02-06 Thread Goanet News
Naik-Parrikar sideshow hits BJP
HT Correspondent, Hindustan Times
Panaji, February 03, 2012

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which sees a “favourable political
climate” prevailing in Goa in the run-up to the March 3 assembly
polls, is working hard to placate the party’s sulking North Goa MP
Shripad Naik.

Naik, projected by the party as the undisputed leader of backward classes
for long, has been denied permission to enter state politics despite
his keenness. The three-time MP has threatened to keep away from
campaigning.

He has also refused to participate in a pre-poll mass contact
programme led by opposition leader Manohar Parrikar. “The party has to
explain why I was left out. If my presence is not needed here, why
should I campaign? Let the candidates’ list be out, I will decide
after that,” said Naik.

Senior BJP leaders are in touch with Naik, trying to paper over the
cracks. The party’s central leadership, however, appears unwilling to
disturb Parrikar, a Gaud Saraswat Brahmin (a powerful upper caste).

According to BJP insiders, the party fears Naik’s entry into the state
poll will create two power blocs in Goa.

Moreover, the party wants to avoid a Lok Sabha by-election, which
would be necessitated if Naik, who enjoys the backing of Maharashtra
strongman Gopinath Munde, quits his seat for state-level politics.

The Naik and Parrikar sideshow is giving the BJP the jitters,
especially with the ruling Congress -- pushed to the wall by several
scams including illegal mining -- moving in to woo the backward

Crisis in BJP as Shripad declines ticket
Feb 6, 2012, 03.14AM IST

PANAJI: North Goa BJP MP Shripad Naik sprung a surprise on Sunday
after he declined the party offer of a ticket to contest from the
newly demarcated Porvorim constituency in next month's Goa assembly
polls.

Naik, who confirmed his inability to contest from Porvorim, said, "I
have less time to carry out my campaign." He later flew to Delhi. The
announcement triggered a crisis in the BJP and opposition leader
Manohar Parrikar and state unit president Laxmikant Parsekar flew to
Delhi to discuss the issue with party brass, sources said.

After much dilly-dallying the party had allotted Naik the ticket,
considering the adverse impact on the party prospects, as Naik has a
sizeable clout with bhaujan samaj voters.

Party sources had said the high command was not keen on Naik's return
to state politics as it could trigger a tussle for the CM's post if
BJP wins.

Goa Assembly Election 2012: Rift in Goa BJP settled, says Nitin Gadkari
IANS Feb 5, 2012, 03.55PM IST

PANAJI: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) still hasn't finalised its
chief ministerial candidate for the March 3 polls in Goa, even as
party president Nitin Gadkari claimed Sunday that the two warring
factions within the party had buried the hatchet.

"We are all going to the elections together. Manohar Parrikar, Shripad
Naik, our president and leaders of the MGP (Maharashtrawadi Gomantak
Party, BJP's poll partner for the assembly election)," a guarded
Gadkari said, when asked why the party had not finalised a chief
ministerial candidate for the elections, as has been the norm in the
past polls.

A caste-based war between Leader of Opposition Manohar Parrikar (a
Brahmin) and North Goa MP Shripad Naik (a Bhandari) has created doubts
in the rank and file of the BJP, which has failed to project a united
front even during the party's pre-poll campaign. The feud has a
remarkable semblance to the Nitin Gadkari-Gopinath Munde tussle in
Maharashtra last year, when the BJP's Brahmin and OBC leaders
respectively slugged it out over the appointment of office bearers.

The tension between Naik, who has always been projected as a mass OBC
leader by the BJP and former chief minister Manohar Parrikar, who has
a smaller, but cult-like following amongst the Goa's urban elite and
the Gaud Saraswat Brahmin (GSB) sections, has largely derailed the
party's pre-election campaigneering agenda.

Naik has publicly opted out of the Jan Sampark yatra, launched by the
party to drum up support across the state before the elections, after
the BJP leadership in New Delhi thumbed down Naik's plan to contest
the state assembly elections.

Gadkari said that the outstanding "issues" concerning Naik were an
"internal party matter" and had been resolved.

"All issues have been resolved. They were an internal party matter.
Shripad Naik will contest the assembly elections in Goa. The party's
parliamentary board will decide which constitu

Goa Assembly Election 2012: Five Catholic faces in BJP's first list for Goa

PANAJI: In an apparent indication of its eagerness to cast off its
pro-Hindutva image, the BJP's first list of 22 candidates for Goa
includes five Christians including a former state tourism minister who
joined the party recently.

The BJP's Central Election Committee had met in Delhi last night to
finalise the first list of candidates for the tiny coastal state going
to polls on March 3.

Catholics constitute a substantial 27 per cent of state's population
of about 14 lakh.

Mathany Saldanha, a former tourism minister, who was a minister in an
erstwhile BJP-led government in the state as a nominee of United Goans
Democratic Party, will be in the fray from Cortalim constituency. He
will cross swords with Caetan Xavier, a Catholic leader, of the
Congress in the Christian-dominated constituency.

Glen Ticlo, an entrepreneur, has been fielded from Aldona where he is
pitted against Congress' Dayanand Narvekar, a former state finance
minister.

Carlose Almeida, who recently joined BJP, has been nominated from
Vasco. Party's sitting legislator from Mapusa, Francis D'Souza, has
been retained, while Calangute, a major tourism hub, will have another
Catholic candidate Micheal Lobo trying his luck against sitting
Congress MLA Agnelo Fernandes.

In the run up to the polls, several Catholic leaders have joined BJP
which is going to the hustings under the leadership of former Chief
Minister and current leader of opposition in the state assembly
Manohar Parrikar.

"There has been no sustained attempt to get Catholics join the party.
In fact, so many people joining the party indicates that BJP is
getting more popular in the state," BJP Goa spokesman Vishnu Wagh
said.

BJP has a pre-poll alliance with regional outfit Maharashtrawadi
Gomantak Party which once ruled the state.

While BJP will contest 31 of state's 40 seats, MGP will field its
nominees in 8. The two parties will support an independent Nirmala
Sawant in Cumbharjua constituency.

MGP was a constituent of state's Congress-led government till a few
days ago before joining hands with main Opposition BJP.

Mangalore, Feb 6: "As a thanksgiving to Jesus Christ for all the
successful projects in education, medical, religious and other fields
undertaken by the Mangalore Diocese in the last 125 years, a grand
post-centenary silver jubilee celebration of the diocese will be
organized on Saturday February 11 at Rosario Cathedral grounds and on
Sunday February 12 at Nehru Maidan," informed Bishop of Mangalore Dr
Aloysius Paul D’Souza at a press conference at Bishop's House here on
Monday February 6.

Speaking on the journey of the Mangalore diocese over the years, he

which officially came into being on February 21, 1887.

"The Diocese of Mangalore has 161 parishes spread across three
districts, with a Catholic population of about 4,00,000. There are 335
diocesan priests,160 religious priests, and 1600 nuns serving the
diocese. The diocese administrates educational institutions from play
school to engineering and medical colleges, as well as healthcare
institutions like hospitals and dispensaries, and old age homes. The
gospel message of love and service is realized through these
institutions,"

Regarding works undertaken to mark the jubilee year, the bishop said
that a project of constructing 160 houses for the poor was initiated
with the involvement of the families, parishes and the diocese. "A
total of Rs 52.30 lac was earmarked for the project. Five houses have
already been constructed and 97 are under construction. Other projects
like constructing two hostels for rural boys from poor families
aspiring to pursue higher studies in Mangalore, and a shrine in Bajpe
are also taking shape," he said.

On Saturday February 11, the jubilee programme will begin with the
Eucharistic celebration at 4 pm at Rosario Cathedral grounds.
Archbishop Savio Hon, secretary of the Congregation of the
Evangelization of the Peoples will be the main celebrant. There will
be nearly 20 bishops and 300 priests concelebrating. Around 15,000

[Goanet] Bicholim congress block quits

2012-02-06 Thread samir umarye
--
Samir Umarye

BICHOLIM: Revolts have hit Congress. The first has come from Bicholim where
Naresh Sawal and the entire party block committee quit on Sunday. On
Saturday, Congress had announced that former BJP MLA Rajesh Patnekar, who
joined the party recently, would be the Congress candidate from Bicholim.

"All the members of the block committee have resigned as they felt Congress
is not valuing their loyalty," Sawal told media persons. About 30 of his
supporters were present when he announced the resignation. These included
block president Vighnesh Gaonkar, women's front president Vidhya Parab, and
office bearers Kundan Fogeri, Audhoot Parab and others.

Sawal said that allotting the ticket to another candidate is an injustice
to him. He admitted that BJP leaders have been in contact with him. "We
will take a final decision after a couple of days on this," he said.

Congress campaign manager Mauvin Godinho termed the block committee's
resignation as unfortunate. "This action should not come as a surprise as
these developments do come about in political parties," he said. Congress
will cope with the development but it will not affect the party candidate's
prospects, Godinho asserted.

[Goanet] The GR8 SWALLOW of almost 50 DECADES. A veritable GOOD RIDDANCE TO BAD RUBBISH ???

2012-02-06 Thread floriano

What Today's ... 6 February, 2012 papers say.

BJP, MGP seal pre-poll deal Navhind Times.
BJP-MGP deal sealed, finally.. O Herald O.
MGP dumps Cong, embraces BJP. Gomantak Times.

COMMENTS:

For all these years, it was an inescapable fact that the MGP was being
slowly but steadily swallowed by the BJP. It is little surprise that the
FEAT of the swallowing has been completed at last and the GR8 saffron
anaconda can rest.

This feat of the BJP swallowing of the MGP had been predicted by me years
ago during the aftermath of the Curchorem-Savordem riots when Maria Aurora
Couto had snubbed late Ulhas Buyao bad, at the TB Cunha Hall, when he had
set out to explain the reasons why this first of it's kind communal riots
took place in Goa. But then I had intervened and Ulhas Buyao had had his
say, with Maria Aurora Couto nursing her ego while holding back tears for
being brushed aside. It is then that I had taken the stage and challenged
the audience to prove me wrong when I had boldly stated that:

"MGP was COMMUNAL, is COMMUNAL and always will remain COMMUNAL." Since
there were no challenges forthcoming I had gone on to explain why I said
what I had said:

"If the MGP was not communal" I had said " the BJP would not be able to
touch it with a long barge pole. But we see that MGP is already more than
half swallowed by the BIG communal brother and what is left will be
accomplished sooner than later"

My prophetic words have come true TODAY. It is good riddance that MGP, that
has been the ULCERS of GOA and GOANs since 1963 is deep inside the BJP's
intestines and is being digested for good.

I, for one, am overjoyed and HAPPY enough to say EUREKA !! EUREKA !!
Secular GOA has now got just one enemy to fight it out instead of two. The
BIG SAFFRON TOOTHLESS ANACONDA.

Cheers

[Goanet] Quest For Benaulim

2012-02-06 Thread Freddy Agnelo Fernandes
Quest For Benaulim

With both Micky and Churchill out of the fray in Benaulim, it has
opened the chance of a battle royal between three new comers, papa’s
girl Valanka Alemao and the two hard working self made men Dr Hubert
Gomes and Caitu

Papa Churchill Alemao has been fighting tooth and nail to push his
daughter into politics for quite a while now, initially papa Alemao
threatened to bring down the Congress Government when Ms Valanka was
refused a ticket by the Congress for the Parliamentary election, then
again papa Alemao and uncle Alemao nearly got evicted from the
Congress for creating a ruckus when Ms Valanka was disqualified from
contesting for the coveted Youth Congress post for using papa’s
political clout for support but still the Alemao clan have not given
up hope for a ticket, not just for Ms Valanka but for cousin Yuri as
well, so that Goan politics can be a family affair for the Alemao
clan.

After months of inaugurating hot-mixing of roads and the distribution
of sarees and food items now comes the testing time for the new comer
to the ugly world of Goan politics, Ms Valanka has the blessings of
political history in her family, her own dad and uncle are ministers
in the present coalition Government in Goa, who more than once tried
to dislodge Digambar Kamat from the CM’s chair to make way for the
elder Alemao sibling to take over but so far failed at every attempt,
so now reinforcements are sought in way of seats for Ms Valanka and
Yuri to increase their bargaining or blackmailing power but what
bothers me most is, why should these two young kids be thrown into the
fiery ring of Goan political fire, when they could have had good
employment opportunities as watchmen at Rahejas ?

Ms Valanka, though supposed to be a lawyer, has been riding piggyback
on papa Alemao’s broad back all through her advent into Goan politics
and papa Alemao has been seen constantly watching and guiding her like
a hawk but she has nothing of her own accord to show for, as her work
of art or achievement. People have also questioned her source of
income, she has tried to buy vote by distributing goodies to people in
her constituency, she has not been practicing law so from where does
she get her income ?

On the other hand Dr Hubert is also a new entrant in to Goan politics,
who at first did not have any political ambitions, he was contented
and secure in his profession but his involvement in the social welfare
of his people woke him up to the reality and the unhealthy state of
affairs in his constituency and Goa, the realization of the levels of
corruption prompted him to be a part of the system to clean the
rotting system. It’s a fact that we have to be in the system to
rectify the system, as trying to clean the system from outside the
system is not just possible. Since then he has promised to fight to
bring about the much required change in his constituency as well as
Goa, and we all know how generous Dr. Hubert has been to the poor and
the needy and involved in the constructive developmental plan of his
constituency. Dr. Hubert has proved time and again what he stands for
and the people of Benaulim have realized that in him there could be a
chance to contribute to the constructive development and preservation
of Goa and our Goan Identity.

Dr. Hubert does not have a father or godfather who is a politician at
present and he certainly does not need one nor does he dance on the
inherited fortune of his family through legal or illegal means. He is
a determined professional who is totally humane, honest and a sincere
man and that is the difference between Valanka and Dr. Hubert. So Dr.
Hubert should be the ideal choice of the people of Benaulim.

There are two others who vying for the Benaulim constituency, John is
one of them, we all know after a close fight in the last elections, he
did garner a lot of support then but today with allegations and his
being in and out of jail for a considerable time for an alleged
attempted rape of a foreigner, has hurt his image even though the
court has given him the benefit of doubt for lack of sufficient
evidence but will he manage to garner the same support that he had at
the last election? It is no secret that he has vengeance in mind as he
had been blaming Mickey for framing him is the rape case, rumours are
that he is in the Churchill camp now and that he is using John to eat
into the votes of Dr. Hubert and Caitu.

Caitu is another self made man who has been a strong Mickey supporter
from the very beginning and hence rewarded with GVP ticket, the Gulf
returned is know to be a good person and even though his financial
power is nothing compared to the two former MLA’s of Benaulim, even
then he has been involved in social work and Panchayat affairs in
Benaulim and is said to have good support, he certainly looks on the
anti Alemao and anti John feelings in Benaulim to take him to success
but he may be at a disadvantage because of his links to Micky whose
image has suffered very b

But NEVER thru BJP, or any other saffron Hitler Nazi groupism.Vote and

Anything else is like jumping from the Frying Pan into the Fire!

If the saffron fascists come to power, India will be scorned and isolated by
all neighbors and the Muslim World and the Western World. The Third World War
will begin, to destroy the second Hitlerism in India; many innocents will die
in the cross fire; much of my country will be destroyed 'cause of the saffron
Hitlerism! Then China will be enabled to 'walk in' and Chow Chow will be served
for Divali and Ganesh!
Frightening Prospect indeed!
Is that what Goans /Indians want?
NO, NO, NO; so shun these saffron groups, the BJP, the RSS etc; Send them in
exile to the Andaman Islands  to live and die there! They deserve no more than
that; Unless they have a Complete Change of Heart and Philosophy/Policy.

The Congress is scoring one self goal after another. Instead of taking
action against Babush Monserate who has been severely indicted on
serious graft charges by the IT Department, the party rewards him by
giving him its ticket from the St. Cruz constituency. The second
ticket may also soon come his way. And the Mayor Yatin Parekh who has
failed miserably to perform his basic duties of keeping the Panaji
city clean, neat and hygienic is now going to contest from Panjim.
Where is Goa heading? The Ranes and Naiks may have two and the Alemaos
may soon have their own Football Team in the Assembly which is going
to be a 'Nightmare on Goan Streets'. Goa is facing a bleak future with
3 or 4 self centered politicians wanting to control the destiny of our
once beautiful state. The World may not end in 2012 but Goa's future
most certainly will if we don't act decisively to prevent this. Goa's

[Goanet] IBN LiveChat session this afternoon with Vivek Menezes and Damodar Mauzo

Goa polls: Hopes and possibilities
Vivek Menezes and Damodar Mauzo
The sunshine state goes to polls on March 3. The present government
has been tainted by expose of a series of scams and scandals. What
change, if any, can Goans expect? Or will anti-incumbency be a
non-factor? Talk to Vivek Menezes and Damodar Mauzo, two intellectuals
who feel strongly about issues that concern the sunshine state.

-
Q
Is there really a difference between the Congress and the BJP and the
MGP and the UGDP and the GVP and the Trinamul? Should we really judge
these parties on the grounds of ideology, loyalty, sincerity and love
for Goa and Goans? Or should we take politics purely as a business and
choose the best businessman? Where is the Parliamentary democracy
taking us? Frustration; or helpless and hopeless surrender???
Asked by: Sarvesh

A
Please remember that Goans had to fight and be liberated to enjoy
democracy. For 450 years, our people were ruled by Europeans. In the
20th century itself, Goa suffered under Antonio Oliveiro Salazar, the
right-wing conservative dictator of Portugal, who we single-handedly
blame for botching decolonization and betrwaying Goans by subjecting
us to a humiliating and painful military occupation even after 1961.
Though democracy has problems - especially in a country like India -
we firmly agree with Winston Churchill's line that "democracy is the
worst system of governmentexcept for all the alternatives!" And we
also recall that it is democracy, and the historic Opinion Poll that
has made us the state that we are. When it comes to these elections,
we Goans have to be among the first to reject money and muscle power
and vote with our conscience. This is an existential issue now. When
it comes to ideology, of the 200 candidates who will contest Goa this
year, we find that no ideological difference seems apparent between
most of the candidates, though there are marginal differences in the
party records. As far aw we are concerned, in Goa the Congress has
shown itself to be corrupt and also communal, while the BJP has amply
demonstrated that it is communal, and also corrupt!

Q
Will this election mark the end of illustrous carrers of some of the
politicians or will this election too spray no surprises?
Asked by: Vaikuntn Talaulikar

A
Goa's politics still remain dominated by several larger-than-life
figures who seem to get elected from their constituencies no matter
which party they belong to, or whatever crimes he has committed in
plain view. All parties seem incapable of cleansing themselves, or of
aspiring to higher standards. We have the incredible case of Babush
Monserrate in mind right now, because this is a person who has been a
minister in both Cong + BJP governments, and not too far in the past,
actually attacked the main Panjim police station with his men. Last
week, the papers were full of detailed and documented accusations of
massive graft and bribe-taking on one day, and the next day we learned
that not only had he rec'd a Congress ticket, but his wife too!

Q
whats your prediction?
Asked by: Deepak

A
This is a very hard election to predict. For the first time in some
decades, there is genuine uncertainty in several constituencies due to
a combination of all the factors we have discussed: anti-incumbency,
widespread anxiety and dis-satisfaction, disillusionment with
political system due to exposed scams and scandals. If - and this a
very big IF - money power and coersion can be greatly limited in this
Goa elections, we do see the possibility for real change.

Q
Mr Menezes, isn't it so called secular parties ruling Great stae of
GOA have destroyed the enviornmen of GOA?
Asked by: VINNY

A
Vinny, we don't see a big difference between the parties in Goa, and
most of the legislators obviously don't either since they have happily
shifted between them - sometimes several times back and forth. All
parties and the entire economic elites of Goa have disgracefully
colluded in recent years to destroy an irreplaceable part of our
forest cover and natural heritage in an orgy of destructive illegal
mining.

Q
Respected Sirs, Do you think the scams and scandals will have any
impact on the voting pattern?
Asked by: Kavalam

A
We think so. Even if patterns across the country have not usually been
shifted greatly by exposed scandals, over here in Goa the people's
patience really does seem to have worn out with its Assembly (often
called the 40 thieves) where average assets of each legislator has now
soared beyond one million dollars, and a series of scam revelations
have demonstrated a comprehensive looting.

Q
How are the Demographic of migrant's voting impact this election,
knowing that many have nutured the migrant vote bank?
Asked by: Cleto fernandes

A
It is true that Goa now has a substantial proportion of migrants -
perhaps even approaching 50% of the population. This is far in excess
of any

CHOOSE THE BEST CANDIDATE, FORGET PARTIES.

Dear Raul,

All that you have said in your beautifully thought out EDItT under the above
caption is very very true. But I must say that it is unfortunate for GOA
that you have turned out to be a totally BLIND and DEAF editor of a
Newspaper that is Goa's lifeline and has been, all throughout it's
existence.

Why do I say this?

The reason behind is that your 'RADAR-SCOPE'' has a crippled and
short-circuited range.

In technical terms, a radar-scope is designed in such a manner that it has
to work under two conditions. (1) During rain or snowfall and (2) In clear
weather. The two frequency wavelengths used under the two conditions
mentioned here are 10 Centimeters ( a rather long wavelength) and 3
Centimeters (a rather short wavelength). Both these frequencies cannot be
generated from the same unit and therefore two separate individual units are
installed for this purpose. If the weather condition is clear, meaning no
snowy or rainy weather, the instrument used is the short wave 3cms
radarscope. This identifies real targets whether at sea or in the air which
can be tracked. But this unit (3 Cms) cannot be used in the rainy or snowy
weather as it will identify rain drops or snowflakes as real targets and the
radar scope becomes unreliable. This is when the 10 Cm radar is used to
eliminates all rain drops or snow (clutter in general) as targets and only
real moving or stationery targets are indentified.

You Sir, need to install a 10 Centimeter radar-scope for your GR8 Newspaper
to make it all purpose newspaper and reliably so. Again. Why do I say this??
It is because your 3 Cm political radar-scope can identify targets like
MGP UGDP GVP as the only Goa's Regional Parties for whom you have no great
love or regard. But you have missed other small parties (which are NOT
repeat NOT trying to survive but ARE surviving due to their very strong
moral and ethical fabric that has gone into making them) as rain drops or
snowflakes.

Therefore your GR8 edit is wanting.

BTW: Your caption above is totally WRONG and MISLEADING to the people of
GOA.

BECAUSE:
(1) There are no good or bad people. There are only good or bad intensions.
(2) Saints are to be found only in HEAVEN. Never on Earth.
(3) The System that a Political Party is based upon has to be GOOD,
SELF-SCRIFICING, COMMITTED with total DEDICATION and one that cannot be
MANIPULATED at any time. Goa's poltical parties with exception of JUST
ONE, operate under NO SYSTEM.
(4) A corrupt person has a price which is considered low. A good person too
has a price which is could be relatively high, but a price nevertheless
which is relatively CHEAP . (Example: some of our very good, seemingly
devout MEN OF GOD] BUT a very good person also cannot be said does not
have a price. This price could be very very high ( like changing parties
from BJP to Congress, holding the mining ministry for 12 years running,
gobble and let gobble thousands of crores of rupees and still be the most
popular person and very much electable).

Cheers

Yours truly,
for Goa Su-Raj Party [GSRP]

PS 1: In case you need the 10 Cm Radar Scope installed in your good
office, my services as a qualified Radar Engineer is available at no cost to
you. My certificate is endorsed by the South Shields (U.K.) Institute of
Marine Engineering, 1986. Assuredly, this radar scope may also be used by
you and your staff to identify small, good , reliable political targets
which GOA can trust and depend upon.

PS 2: The above is not intended to offend your sensibilities. It is only
meant to EDUCATE you more in political matters.

Goa's
second Liberation must begin!

[Goanet] Book Review: Jesuit Heritage in Goa

2012-02-06 Thread dale luis menezes
WHITEWASH, RED STONE AND THE JESUIT HERITAGE
By
DALE LUIS MENEZES

The Society of Jesus has come a long way from the time the first Jesuit
missionary had landed on the shores of Goa. Taking an initiative into scholarly
work, the Jesuits, right from the start have actively compiled
dictionaries/grammars for Konknni as well as other languages. Involving
themselves actively in the spread of Christianity, among other things, required
the construction of churches and chapels. A new book on the Jesuit-built
churches in Goa (thank you, Francisco “Xik” Dias of Dramapur for gifting me
your copy!) gives one the impression that throughout the five centuries that
the order has been here, the Jesuits have been as busy as the bees.
Most of the magnificent churches – the brilliant white façade against a
lush green background – that we are so used to in any Goan landscape and which
we believe to be our cultural heritage, were built by the Jesuits. One of the
simplest ways to recognize a church built by the Jesuits is to spot the
insignia, IHS, which is displayed in a very prominent place in the church.
Listed in this book are nearly 80 churches (and some chapels too) that were
built by the Jesuits. Jesuit Heritage in Goa by Savio Rodrigues SJ is a
coffee-table book with photographs by Rinald D’Souza SJ and Shannon Pereira SJ.
This book is dedicated to Fr. Moreno de Souza who had immersed himself in
researching about Goan churches and whose four volumes in Konknni (Bardezcheo,
Saxtticheo (2 Vols.) and Tiswaddecheo Igorzo) are a testament to his scholarly
work. In his dedication Savio Rodrigues says, “Fr. Moreno could not wait to see
the publication of this book, which has now seen the light of the day, thanks
to the insights he shared with us. We gratefully acknowledge his willingness to
accompany us on a tour of the churches of Ilhas, just three months before God
called him to Himself. His long hours of research, revealing interviews, and
finally his books on the churches in Goa have contributed immensely to the
publication of this book.”
This book briefly tries to acquaint the reader with each of the
churches that the Jesuits built using history (not exactly the hardcore one),
anecdotes and traditional lore. The pages of this book are full of photographs
and anybody who needs quick and concise information about a particular church
can profitably refer to this book. Though informative, the prose sometimes
lacks the delightfulness of a coffee-table book. More revisions could have been
certainly welcome. Interesting traditions associated with a particular church
could have been woven in the text to make the overall prose more delightful.
One just needs to browse through a Mario Cabral e Sa authored coffee-table book
on Goa to understand what I am talking about.
The layout and printing of this book is neatly and artistically done. I
must give it to the two photographers who provided the images for this book.
There are some stunning pictures in this book and credit should be given to
Rinald and Shannon for their dedicated effort. But some of the photos did not
capture the beauty and detail of the churches. Like the photos of the detail of
the façade of the College of St. Paul bearing the Jesuit monogram (p. 17) and
the sanctuary of the Church of Our Lady of Hope (p. 119).
This book did raise a question in my mind: why did the Jesuits of today
feel the need to publish a book about their own heritage? The answer is that,
maybe, they want to reclaim their heritage and remind us of their legacy. Due
to the Pombaline reforms the Jesuits, along with other religious orders, were
driven out of Goa. The Jesuits were the most affected because they possessed
enormous amount of property and, as this book has shown, some of the biggest
churches were built by them. Though they have lost control over their material
property, their intellectual heritage and legacy cannot be forgotten. Perhaps,
the Jesuits are trying to assert this point. “Suppressed and expelled centuries
ago, some Jesuit legacies refuse to remain repressed. They remain alive in the
people. Probably prior to the rock-strong foundations of stone, the Jesuits
first built faith-foundations among the people themselves,” Savio Rodrigues
says in the opening few lines on the Colva Church.
One of the most interesting vignettes in this book is the one on the
Ponte de Linhares, the bridge that connects Panjim to Ribandar. This is a
Jesuit contribution to a secular building. “The Ponte de Linhares was built by
the Portuguese Viceroy, Count of Linhares, Dom Miguel de Noronha, between
1632-1633. It was meant to link Panjim with Ribandar and the City of Goa. The
Portuguese sought the technical expertise of the Jesuits of the College of
Saint Paul (Paulistas) in 1632 to build the massive bridge that was to be the
longest in the whole East. The 3,026 metres long bridge was built on alluvial
