If a slight addendum could be made to the info infra

Wallis Mathias (born Karachi) played Test Cricket for Pakistan 1955-1962; is
still remembered as Pakistan's star slip/gully fielder

Antao D'Souza (born Goa) played Test Cricket for Pakistan 1959-1962; bowled
alongside Pak greats like Fazal Mohd and Mohd Hussain.

Antao's brothers Marshall and Paul are also known to have played 1st class
cricket in Pakistan around that time

[Goanet] India Court Summons Google, Facebook, Microsoft Executives Sept 22

2012-06-08 Thread Goanet News Service

India Court Summons Google, Facebook, Microsoft Executives Sept 22

-- Court Also Issues Summons To Executives Of Yahoo and Other Websites

-- Websites To Face Criminal Charges For Hosting Objectionable Content

-- Trial Court Says Executives To Appear On Sept. 22

(Adds details of court's order in 3rd and 6th paragraphs; background in 4th,
7th, 11th and 12th paragraphs)

By R. Jai Krishna

NEW DELHI--A trial court in India Friday moved ahead with a criminal case
against Microsoft Corp. (MSFT), Google Inc. (GOOG), Facebook Inc. (FB),
Yahoo! Inc. (YHOO) and some other entities, by issuing summons to the global
executives of these companies for allegedly failing to censor objectionable
content from their websites.

The criminal case against these global firms follows a complaint from
journalist Vinay Rai, who alleged offenses such as defamation, obscenity and
promoting enmity among different groups on grounds of religion and race
against these sites.

Metropolitan Magistrate Jay Thareja, who is hearing the case, issued the
summons to the executives through the federal home ministry, asking them to
appear in person or through their counsels before the court on Sept. 22.

India's home ministry will pass on the summons to its U.S. counterparts, who
in turn will send them to the companies.

India and the U.S.--where the companies are based--are signatories to an
international treaty for mutual legal assistance, which requires summons to
companies or individuals facing criminal charges to be sent through
diplomatic channels.

The judge also issued summons to executives of Youtube LLC, Orkut, and
Blogspot, three entities owned by Google.

Youtube is a popular video-sharing service, while Orkut is a social
networking website, and Blogspot is a web-based publishing portal.

Facebook declined to comment, whereas Google, Microsoft and Yahoo weren't
immediately available for comment.

The case is the highest-stakes example yet of the controversy in India over
what role Internet companies should have in policing content on the Web. If
convicted, executives from the companies could face jail time and the
companies could face fines, lawyers following the case said.

The local units of these Internet firms have argued that they shouldn't be
held liable for objectionable content posted by users and also that their
Indian subsidiaries can't be held liable because their services are operated
by parent companies in the U.S. Some of them have been dropped from the
case.

Google and Facebook have moved the Delhi High Court to quash the ongoing
criminal proceedings at the trial court, and that appeal will be next heard
Aug. 7.

The web entities also face a civil lawsuit filed by a citizen, with almost
identical accusations to the criminal case. They also face pressure from
India's information technology ministry to monitor their sites proactively,
with an eye toward removing content deemed "offensive" in the country.

From: Gabriel de Figueiredo

AFAIK, there has been no attempt by any Roman Catholic Church missionary to
make a statement that converting to Catholicism would cure them of diseases and
ailments. I also understand that this claim (of a cure) is made by certain
cults purporting to be Christian. Although the Pope has full responsibility for

[Goanet] At 13, Ivana is Asian junior chess champ

2012-06-08 Thread Goanet Sports

At 13, Ivana is Asian junior chess champ
TNN | Jun 8, 2012, 03.55AM IST

PANAJI: You can now say that Ivana Furtado has truly come of age.

Goa's chess prodigy is just 13 years old but the "silent assassin" did the
unthinkable as she won the Asian Junior Chess Championship at Tashkent in
Uzbekistan to, quite remarkably, help Goa produce back-to-back Asian
champions.

Already a two-time world champion in the under-8 and under-10 category, and
a Commonwealth champion in the under-12 category, Ivana's triumph in
Tashkent is memorable simply because she was competing against some of the
best players in the continent, and that too with double her experience.

"For someone as young as Ivana, winning the Asian junior championship is an
incredible feat. You must remember that the championship is for under-20
players and there were several players with plenty of experience at the
highest level," Goa chess association secretary Arvind Mhamal said.

Interestingly, Ivana snatched the Asian title from another Goan, Bhakti
Kulkarni, who finished 14th from a field of 23 hugely-talented players.
Bhakti had won the title last year when she was 18.

Ivana, on the other hand, has six more years in the junior category.

On Thursday, she went for the kill in the final game against R Bharathi
(2088) and collected 7.5 points to finish a point ahead of Rucha Pujari,
also from India.

WIM Vo Thi Kim Phung of Vietnam picked the silver while WFM Rucha had to
settle for the bronze.

"With (defending champion) Bhakti out of form, Ivana stepped in ably and won
the championship for Goa. It was a great performance and probably
unprecedented by any other state producing back-to-back Asian champions in
the recent past," said Dronacharya awardeee and Fide trainer Raghunandan
Gokhale.

The title-triumph helped Ivana now become a Women's International Master
(WIM). As per Fide title regulations, a player who wins the Asian Junior
Chess Championship qualifies for the Women International Master title and
also gets her first Women Grand Master norm. Ivana is now the second WIM and
the youngest Goan after Bhakti to achieve that landmark.

[Goanet] COLUMN: Chief Minister adopts a different approach

2012-06-08 Thread Nisser Dias

Chief Minister adopts a different approach
By Nisser Dias
nisserdias at gmail.com
SMS to 9422437029

Election 2012 over, votes counted, Congress reduced to non-entity with just
nine members in the 40 member house. The sun shone over the BJP and
catapulted it to power with clear majority, people’s aspiration which are
plenty have sky rocketed. The polity wanted an efficient and honest
administration, they wanted corruption to be eradicated, they wanted smooth
functioning government, people wanted illegal mining to stopped, they were
looking for greener environment and Goa. Goans wanted good infrastructure,
better connectivity between cities and villages. They wanted a stop to be
put on constructions of buildings and mega housing projects. They wanted
elimination of drugs and psychotropic substances from the touristic state of
Goa. All these illegal activities had thrived under the regime of the
government of the last five years and general public of the state wanted to
see a change.

A change that we hope that chief minister Manohar Parrikar can turn into a
reality. Having said that there is a big difference from the earlier rule of
Manohar Parrikar as the chief minister and now. He has adopted a reverse
approach – knowingly or unknowingly is impossible to say. In 2002 Parrikar
was impatient man and in a hurry to undo the mess of the Congress government
and do things for the betterment of the state and to a great extent for his
party. The minority community viewed his party and his motives with
suspicion, simply because to attain power he caused a divide in the Congress
government and promoted Francisco Sardinha as chief minister and then got
round him and made a back door entry to grab power.

However this time round it seems that the roles are reversed. The general
public inclusive of all communities are showing signs of impatience for the
chief minister to initiate action against ministers of the erstwhile
Congress led coalition government who have indulged in large scale
corruption and have facilitated rape and destruction of Goa. While Manohar
Parrikar as chief minister is showing signs of maturity and have adopted a
cautious and calculated approach. This could be seen in his stance of
allotting party tickets to as many as six Christian candidates and getting
them elected besides supporting two independents against Congress bigwig
politicians. This coupled with his performance in the assembly as Leader of
Opposition has endeared him to the minority community especially from
Salcete – which till now was seen as the Congress’ pocket borough. Of course
Parrikar would be much happier man if former chief minister Digambar Kamat
had lost the election from Margao as he was the man who ultimately
engineered his fall in 2005.

Then, this time the chief minister had taken on an entirely different type
of Salcete mission as compared to his 2004 sojourn. One must not lose sight
of the fact that minorities dominate Salcete unlike other talukas of Goa.
At that time Manohar Parrikar landed in Salcete only to garner votes. But
this time round his approach is to meet and interact with as many people
during his fortnightly visits. And every time he visits the Christian
dominated taluka he does something out of the book that endears him to the
people. While carrying out inspection of the NaveIim-Benaulim bridge he was
driven on a two wheeler by Benaulim MLA Caitu D’silva. I cannot recollect
any of our former chief ministers or even ministers carrying our inspections
travelling on a two wheeler. In fact Congress ministers refused to take a
step without their official car. Worse still their drivers even took the
official vehicles home after dropping the ministers to their houses. Such
was the abuse of the official vehicles during the Congress regime.

On his second visit to Salcete so far, the chief minister visited Curtorim
to get a firsthand knowledge of cultured fishing. He even tried and netted
fish. And in it he saw fish farming potential in the state along with
employment generation opportunity. If Manohar Parrikar continues these
sojourns during his entire tenure, Salcete Congress political bigwigs may as
well give up their dreams of getting elected in the next five years also.

This coupled with reduction in fuel prices has endeared the chief minister
to the people. How he controls fuel being siphoned to bordering states is
another matter but even then people are minutely watching how he will handle
such a situation.

The people in Salcete are also closely monitoring how he is going to tackle
the Medium of Instruction issue. It might be difficult for him to
politically as well personally to endorse MOI in English, but he will have
to play the minority commission card to give parents the choice.

It seems that the Congress has not realized the manner of his functioning.

warned you" . Incidentally, one was the letter written by Manohar Parrikar
to Doctor D'Souza, trying to convince him that he should take-over as the
Chairman of the Planning Commission. The other was the reply from the good
Doctor.

FL: Manohar Parrikar says - quote " Like you, I too have a vision of Goa "
That is pattently wrong, Doctor. The correct way of saying this should have
been " like you, I too have a vision FOR Goa", and not OF Goa.

DR. Why?
FL: Because, even a beggar has a vision of Goa. He can see the garbage
spreading around, roads in a mess, public transport in shambles etc.

DR. What is the flaw in my letter?
FL: You have said quote " If I take the post, I shall not 'expect' any
remuneration"

Dr. So?
FL: Doctor, you should have said " If I take the post, I shall not 'ACCEPT'
any remuneration"

[Goanet] India’s slowdown

2012-06-08 Thread Gabe Menezes
Farewell to Incredible India Bereft of leaders, an Asian giant is destined
for a period of lower growth. The human cost will be immense

Jun 9th 2012 | from the print edition

   -
   -

IN A world economy as troubled as today’s, news that India’s growth rate
has fallen to 5.3% may not seem important. But the rate is the lowest in
seven years, and the sputtering of India’s economic miracle carries social
costs that could surpass the pain in the euro zone. The near double-digit
pace of growth that India enjoyed in 2004-08, if sustained, promised to
lift hundreds of millions of Indians out of poverty—and quickly. Jobs would
be created for all the young people who will reach working age in the
coming decades, one of the biggest, and potentially scariest, demographic
bulges the world has seen.

But now, after a slump in the currency, a drying up of private investment
and those GDP figures, the miracle feels like a mirage. Whether India can
return to a path of high growth depends on its politicians—and, in the end,
its voters. The omens, frankly, are not good.

*In office but not in power*

Some of this crunch reflects the rest of the world’s woes. The Congress-led
coalition government, with Brezhnev-grade complacency, insists things will
bounce back. But India’s slowdown is due mainly to problems at home and has
been looming for a while. The state is borrowing too much, crowding out
private firms and keeping inflation high. It has not passed a big reform
for years. Graft, confusion and red tape have infuriated domestic
businesses and harmed investment. A high-handed view of foreign investors
has made a big current-account deficit harder to finance, and the rupee has
plunged.

The remedies, agreed on not just by foreign investors and liberal
newspapers but also by Manmohan Singh’s government, are blindingly obvious.
A combined budget deficit of nearly a tenth of GDP must be tamed,
particularly by cutting wasteful fuel subsidies. India must reform tax and
foreign-investment rules. It must speed up big industrial and
infrastructure projects. It must confront corruption. None of these tasks
is insurmountable. Most are supposedly government policy.

Why, then, does Mr Singh not act? Vacillation plays a role. But so do two
deeper political problems. First, the state machine has still not been
modernised. It is neither capable of overcoming red tape and vested
interests nor keen to relax its grip over the bits of the economy it still
controls. The things that do work in India—a corruption-busting supreme
court, the leading IT firms, a scheme to give electronic identities to
all—are often independent of, or bypass, the decrepit state.

Second, as the bureaucracy has degenerated, politics has fragmented. The
two big parties, the ruling Congress and the opposition Bharatiya Janata
Party (BJP), are losing support to regional ones. For all the talk of
aspirations, voters do not seem to connect reform with progress. India’s
liberalisers over the past two decades, including Mr Singh himself, have
reformed by stealth. That now looks like a liability. No popular consensus
exists in favour of change or tough decisions.

As a result, when the government tries to clear bottlenecks, feuding and
overlapping bureaucracies can get in the way. When it suggests raising fuel
prices, it faces protests and backs down. When it tries to pass reforms on
foreign investment, its populist coalition partners threaten to pull the
plug. It does not help that the ageing Mr Singh has little clout of his
own: he reports to the ailing Sonia Gandhi, the dynastic chief of Congress.
With a packed electoral timetable before general elections in 2014,
Congress does not want to take risks.

Is it time for a change at the top? Mr Singh has plainly run out of steam,
but there are no appealing candidates to replace him. Mrs Gandhi’s son,
Rahul, has been a disappointment. What about a change of government? The
opposition BJP is split and has been wildly inconsistent about reform. Its
best administrator, Narendra Modi, chief minister of Gujarat, is divisive
and authoritarian. If it formed a government tomorrow, the BJP would also
have to rely on fickle smaller parties.

Some reformers pray for a financial crisis that will shake the politicians
from their stupor, as happened in 1991, allowing Mr Singh to sneak through
his changes. Though India’s banks face bad debts, its cloistered financial
system, high foreign-exchange reserves and capable central bank mean it is
not about to keel over. A short, sharp shock would indeed be useful, but a
full-blown crisis should not be wished for, because of the harm that it
would do to the poor.

Instead the dreary conclusion is that India’s feeble politics are now
ushering in several years of feebler economic growth. Indeed, the
politicians’ most complacent belief is that voters will just put up with
lower growth—because they supposedly care only about state handouts, the
next meal, cricket and religion. But as Indians di

I am not sure how the above question to me relates to the confusing queries and
random unsubstantiated thoughts below. But since the above question is
addressed to me, I will answer that I have no reason to doubt the historical
description of the Brahma Kumari cult given by its ex-members, especially the
fact that it is a doomsday cult with a strongly held belief that the end of the
world, resulting in the exclusive survival and prosperity of its current
members, and annihilation of all the rest of humankind, is imminent. This
description matches exactly that provided to me by its followers in the early
70's when I visited an exhibition held by them in Menezes Braganza Hall in
Panaji. At that time they believed that the world would end in 1976. I learned
at that time that God to them was the abbreviation G.O.D., which stood for
Generation, Operation and Destruction. Now as far as the allegations of murders
and rapes are concerned, they have been
reported in the mainstream press. Here is one such report in the Times of
India:

Unfortunately, in India, as in most other countries, when a crime is committed
in the context of religion, a massive cover up is almost guaranteed. Religion
like political power has always been a sure-fire way of achieving immunity from
prosecution against crimes.

Remember this Crawling velvety creatures ? Rain Related

Usually seen after first day of Rain

These beautiful velvety creatures are a wonder of nature. I do not think
anyone has done any research on these beautiful, harmless creatures. We
used to call them 'devachim gorvam' (God's cows). A blown up pic of a
single one would have been helpful.

Very interesting. Thanks.

Another fascinating wild flower that used to be called 'tiger claws' (Vaga
Naxi ful) that blooms later during monsoon, the plant is a creeper.

Also the wild thorny bamboo (KaNki) flowers once in 12 years, it's seeds
resemble 'black rice' and probably is edible. After flowering the plants
die and new ones are born from these seeds..mostly in thick jungles.

[Goanet] NEWS: To be minority is blessing in India: Fr. Sequeira (UCAN)

To be minority is blessing in India: Fr. Sequeira
Christians have a special task in India – to promote interfaith
dialogue at all levels, he said in an interview to ucanindia.in

By Ritu Sharma

New Delhi:
Fr. Thomas Sequeira, who recently stepped down as the deputy secretary
general of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India (CBCI), says
being a minority is a blessing in India.

Christians should not entertain a minority complex but consider their
minority status as an invitation to join the majority community for
the nation building, said the priest who was part of the Catholic
Church’s interaction with socio-political and religious leaders for
the past six years.

At a function on June 1, Fr. Sequeira handed over the charge of the
CBCI Centre in New Delhi to his successor Fr. Joseph Chinnayayan.

In an interview with UCAN India a few days earlier, the 59-year-old
priest said he leaves for higher studies in the United States with a
note satisfaction that the Church has taken seriously its role in the
nation building.

Christians, he said, have a special task in India – to promote
interfaith dialogue at all levels.

For this, the Church has to engage all its pastoral structures to form
human communities where people of all religions work together for
common good.

He considered it a matter of pride and privilege to live in a
multi-religious, multi-cultural, multi-linguistic and multi-ethnic
country.

“We are proud fellow pilgrims in this cradle of many religions and the
only way forward for us is to engage in inter-religious dialogue,” he
added.

However, inter-faith dialogue should not become only occasional
meetings among religious leaders, but instead it should take place at
all levels.

The priest cited examples from his native state of Goa to show how
people in villages think beyond their religious consideration to work
together for the common good.

“Dialogue of life really takes place in panchayat (village council)
where people come together to resolve problems of electricity, water
and urbanization,” he noted.

Such efforts could be well harnessed if Church allows its parish
structures to form small human communities. A parish should think of
the welfare of all people under its area, he added.

“When we deal with people of other religions we have to respect and
accept whatever is truthful and noble in their traditions,” he
asserted

What he has seen from the national capital is a greater sense of
tolerance among India, despite occasional aberrations created by some
sections of people.

According to him, religious fanatics are found in all religions,
including Christianity.

Recent cases of Christian persecutions have not discouraged the Church
to carry on with its work among the poor and the deprived.

However, Christians have to work to remove the perception among
certain sections of Indians that the Church indulges in conversion
works. “No one will deny us the right to strengthen our country,” he
added.

Although the Church is in the forefront of education, healthcare and
social development, it has to improve the quality of its service and
commitment of its workers, he said.

“We have great potential and we have to utilize it for the welfare of
the national by joining hands with people of other religions,” he
added.
